- 0:00if you have your Bibles go to second Samuel, chapter 20 with
- 0:04me second, Samuel chapter 20, I'm going to read a few of these
- 0:11verses with you and then we will do what we always do.
- 0:14And that's learn what these verses were intended to say to
- 0:17us as Christians. The New Testament tells you, and
- 0:22I that the Old Testament has been given to us more than just
- 0:25to prove that. Jesus Christ of Nazareth is the
- 0:28Messiah that's been foretold hundreds of years ago.
- 0:31The Old Testament has also been given to you and I for our
- 0:34instruction, for our guidance to provide the best illustrations,
- 0:40and knowing how to apply New Testament, New Covenant
- 0:44principles. And that's why we come here
- 0:46because we want to be further furnished to know exactly what
- 0:50it is. That God God requires of us and
- 0:52what it is that we can do to honor and glorify and honor him.
- 0:56And so when we come to this chapter, believe that God has
- 0:59something to say. That's what we believe every
- 1:01single week. Let's read it.
- 1:03Beginning in verse 1. Now, there happened to be there
- 1:08a worthless, man, whose name was Sheba.
- 1:10The son of bichri Benjamin night.
- 1:14And he blew the trumpet and said, we have no portion in
- 1:17David and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse, every man
- 1:23to his tent. So Israel, so all the men of
- 1:26Israel withdrew from David and followed Sheba, the son of
- 1:29bichri but the men of Judah, followed their kings steadfastly
- 1:33from the Jordan to Jerusalem. Let's pray, Lord, this is your
- 1:41word. We are your people, we believe
- 1:44by faith that you have something to say to us, not just as a mere
- 1:48study, but they you would speak directly into our lives into the
- 1:53details of our existence and that we would conform ourselves
- 1:57to the wisdom. And the truth that has been
- 1:59presented and preserved in these very versus.
- 2:02And for this we give you glory and honor.
- 2:04Let there be a special Grace from the spirit of God teaching
- 2:09this and hearing this and more importantly and applying it in
- 2:12Christ's name we pray. Amen.
- 2:14Does it surprise you? That after dealing with a man
- 2:21who caused an uprising and attempted to divide the nation
- 2:25of Israel. After Absalom was done away with
- 2:29that, there would be. So soon, another attempt by
- 2:33another man to try to bring about severance, And disunity
- 2:39among the people of God, it shouldn't surprise you.
- 2:43And the reason why it shouldn't surprise you is because division
- 2:47among the people of God, is one of Satan's most favorite and
- 2:51repeated schemes against the Saints.
- 2:56He is the one who sows Discord among the Brethren.
- 2:58He's the one who inspires men who give a foothold to him to
- 3:02do. Just that among those that are
- 3:05called to not just a Unity, but a supernatural Unity.
- 3:10Now, I know we just started here in second, Samuel, 20.
- 3:13But I want us to go quickly to Ephesians 4.
- 3:15I want you to see something so important in the New Testament,
- 3:17in light of this, in Ephesians, chapter 4, and verse 30, If you
- 3:23want to know how Paul wrote his Epistles, he had a common
- 3:26format, he would be very theological up front, he would
- 3:30teach and he would go deep concerning matters of the Gospel
- 3:34of the Cross of the person of Jesus Christ.
- 3:36And then the second half of his letters, he would get intensely
- 3:39practical. And, so, he would say, okay,
- 3:42here's all these wonderful truths.
- 3:44These gems about who God is, and then he would hinge that with.
- 3:47Therefore, now, this is what it means for your life, and that's
- 3:51what he does. Exactly here in Ephesians
- 3:52chapter 4. Verse chapter 12 and 3 is is
- 3:56dense with Rich truth and in chapter 4 is very heavy on
- 4:00practical application. Look what he says.
- 4:02In verse 1, I therefore a prisoner for the Lord urge you
- 4:08to walk in a manner worthy of the calling of which you have
- 4:11been called because chapter one is about you being called you
- 4:15being called you being called, right?
- 4:17And he builds upon that leading up to chapter 4 and he says,
- 4:20okay, you're called right. That's a theological truth.
- 4:23With that's a position that you enjoy because of Jesus Christ.
- 4:26Now that you're called you should walk in a certain manner
- 4:30that position is just something that it's not just something you
- 4:32tucked away in your brain. You tuck away in your statement
- 4:35of faith and in just live the way you want, no because of
- 4:38these things now you should walk in a certain way.
- 4:40How should I walk Apostle Paul refers to with all humility and
- 4:45gentleness with patience bearing with one another in love?
- 4:51Yes, you got to do that with your good if you're going to
- 4:53live with other Christians, bear with one another.
- 4:56But look at verse 3, eager to maintain the unity of the spirit
- 5:02in the bond of peace. Eager to maintain now.
- 5:08What's fascinating here is that we have a truth here about the
- 5:11experience of unity Unity. When there is Harmony, when
- 5:15there is mutual love, when there is unselfish service given to
- 5:20one another, in a group of people like this.
- 5:22That is a work of the spirit of God.
- 5:25It is the Holy Spirit who connects you, who providentially
- 5:30leads you to be in a group of people though.
- 5:33They represent various backgrounds but who have the The
- 5:36same Lord and to enjoy that perpetually.
- 5:39That's a holy spirit work. That's a miracle.
- 5:43It's nothing short of a miracle. I mean, I look at this place
- 5:46week after week more than once a week.
- 5:48And he see different shades of skin, different backgrounds,
- 5:51different ages, different Generations, different
- 5:55testimonies. And yet when service is over, or
- 5:58right before the service, even starts, I love when this place
- 6:01is filled with the sound of laughter and the site of hugs
- 6:05and people laying hands on each other's shoulders and praying
- 6:07for them young and old old giving advice young, energizing
- 6:12the old What is that? That's a work of the spirit of
- 6:16God. And it's a work of the spirit,
- 6:19God, more now than ever in a culture.
- 6:21That is so fragmented and divided.
- 6:25We can peek in here week after week, and not just in this place
- 6:28but across the globe and witness a work of Heaven, each time,
- 6:33they'll take it for granted. We're told here that the unity
- 6:37of the spirit, the author of unity in the church, is the Holy
- 6:40Spirit. And yet you have a
- 6:44responsibility in nurturing that.
- 6:46And so do I, because Paul tells us by the spirit, you must be
- 6:50eager to maintain that. So the Holy Spirit, ignites it.
- 6:54The Holy Spirit can help us walk in and continue in it but there
- 6:57must be a diligence and there must be a reverence and there
- 7:02must be an awareness on our part to protect what the spirit of
- 7:05God has started. And what the Holy Spirit wants
- 7:08us to continue in. What does that require well?
- 7:13Usually, where our minds? Go to is forgiveness, right?
- 7:15And that's right. We should we should be quick to
- 7:17forgive whatever faults because you need to bear with one
- 7:20another in love. We're going to step on each
- 7:22other's toes. It's going to happen eventually.
- 7:24It's going to happen at some point.
- 7:25It's going to happen. It's more people come in, but
- 7:28it's more than just forgiving. It also includes hear me
- 7:32carefully. Overlooking what?
- 7:34I mean by that Because of are non-essential preferences
- 7:40non-essential convictions if we want to promote a Holy Spirit
- 7:45Led unity and it's going to require us to not give in to our
- 7:49selfish ambition or desires or ideas but to be willing to
- 7:53discern. What it is that is important
- 7:55what it is and that is not important and then to walk with
- 7:59people hand-in-hand for a greater cause And some people
- 8:03are not willing to do that because unfortunately what you
- 8:05have even among the church in the local church setting is no
- 8:10shortage of individuals who are easily given into the campaign
- 8:15of this Unity for justifiable reasons in their own eyes.
- 8:18And that's exactly what you. And I just read in this chapter,
- 8:21we read of a man among the camp of Israel named Sheba.
- 8:24And this man Sheba took advantage of a situation.
- 8:28He trumpeted his voice and decided to try.
- 8:32To separate the tribes of Israel yet again, and you're thinking
- 8:36to yourself. Why is this man doing this?
- 8:40And it's because people take advantage of vulnerable
- 8:43situations, especially among the people of God and that is
- 8:47exactly what's Happening Here. Notice the timing when Sheba
- 8:51this worthless, man, that's what the Bible describes him.
- 8:54Me sometimes people people think what we preach here is bold and
- 8:57straightforward, not as much as the Bible.
- 9:00Worthless worthless. The Bible is not saying that he
- 9:04has no value as a person created in the image of God.
- 9:06The Bible is saying using that word that he has no conviction
- 9:10or character and that is the kind of person that Satan uses
- 9:14to breed Discord. You heard about Absalom when we
- 9:18learn that in second, Samuel chapter 15 that division is bred
- 9:23in the hearts of Unholy men and it's no different.
- 9:25There were no different with Sheba but when does he do it?
- 9:28We didn't cover this last week. So this going to be very
- 9:30insightful. Look at the last verses of
- 9:32chapter 19. Look at verse 41 down and you
- 9:35get the context of when Sheba decides to open his mouth and
- 9:40Lead astray a group, verse 41, then all the men of Israel came
- 9:44to the king and said to the king, why have our brothers and
- 9:47Men of Judah, stolen you away and brought the king and his
- 9:50household over the Jordan and all David's men with him.
- 9:53Pause, What's Happening Here? Judah initiates the project of
- 9:58bringing David back From the Jordan into Jerusalem.
- 10:01David is waiting there at the border Judah and the elders
- 10:05agree with him, the Elders of Judah to come, and to bring him
- 10:08back and who trails along the northern tribes of Israel?
- 10:13How many tribes in the northern part represented Israel, the
- 10:17northern part of Israel, 10 good.
- 10:20And how many in the southern? Well if you know how many tribes
- 10:22to, right? So the northern tribe of Israel
- 10:26always represents 10 of the tribes this Or the tribe of
- 10:30Judah rather instead of the Southern Kingdom, you can use
- 10:33that from time to time. But the tribe of Judah, read the
- 10:35kingdom of Judah is represented by two tribes.
- 10:39And so we see here that Judah represents that Kingdom and the
- 10:43men of Judah, stolen you away and brought the king and his
- 10:46household over the Jordan, all the men's with him.
- 10:47This is their problem. Why did you do this without us
- 10:52and verse 42 and all the men of Judah, answer, the men of Israel
- 10:55because the king is our close relative.
- 10:59Why then are you angry over this matter have we eaten at all?
- 11:02The king's expense or has he given us?
- 11:05Any gift and the men of Israel answer.
- 11:08The men of Judah. We have 10 shares in the king,
- 11:12and in David, also, we have more than you.
- 11:14Why then did you despise us where we not the first to speak
- 11:19of bringing back our King? But the words of the men of
- 11:23Judah, were fiercer than the words of the men, as of Israel.
- 11:26It's like the author there by the spirit, just after that,
- 11:28Initial conversation, just sensors.
- 11:30What else was said? Clearly, it was very fierce
- 11:33fierce enough for us to know the details of what was
- 11:35communicated. Okay, that was a mouthful.
- 11:38So let me explain what's happening again Judah and the
- 11:41Elders of that tribe. Come and bring David back.
- 11:43The ten other tribes learn of this.
- 11:45They trail behind and they're upset.
- 11:47Here's what they're upset about, you didn't include us in this
- 11:50process. We want to be in this parade.
- 11:53We want to lead this parade, and so they begin to criticize the
- 11:57tribe of Judah. Why didn't you call us?
- 12:00Why didn't you invite us? Why didn't you include us?
- 12:03And you would think that the immaturity of the in tribes
- 12:08would have been wet with wisdom. Remember, when Gideon went to
- 12:11war and Ephraim comes and they say, why didn't you include us
- 12:15in this battle and and Gideon answers with such wisdom that he
- 12:21he squashes any beef, right? He quiets, they're selfish ideas
- 12:28and they're aroused flesh, because he was, he was very
- 12:32gentle, and his answer. We would hope that Judah would
- 12:35do the same, but unfortunately, they met Match the immaturity of
- 12:38the northern tribes with their own immaturity.
- 12:40So look back at what the line of argumentation is here.
- 12:44Look at the debate, the men of Judah, verse 42 say, he's our
- 12:48close relatives, like he's part of our tribe.
- 12:52So, we have claim on him and this is expected of us.
- 12:56And how does Israel answer verse 43?
- 13:00We have 10 shares. We have more numbers.
- 13:03There are more of us that represent Israel so naturally,
- 13:07because there are more of us. Then we should have the
- 13:10privilege of bringing him back because this is what it's all
- 13:13about. Who is the one leading him back?
- 13:15Who's the one that's responsible for assuring the king back to
- 13:19his throne. This is silly.
- 13:25This is extremely silly. How do you equate this with a
- 13:30church context? I thought about it.
- 13:33Well there are many ways our our family gives more to this
- 13:37ministry. And we because because we give
- 13:40more this ministry, we should have more say in what happens
- 13:43here. We've been here longer than
- 13:47everybody else. We have more history here.
- 13:49We're one of the founders, actually.
- 13:51We were there from from day one. And so it's obvious that we
- 13:56would have access to more of what happens in the background
- 13:58of the operations here. and so, what you have here is fleshly
- 14:06strife This is not essential, this is petty, this is
- 14:12insignificant, this is not, this is not important, this is about
- 14:16who's first who's there and you would think like well no I mean
- 14:19it is kind of rude for them to not consider the ten tribes of
- 14:23Israel. Okay.
- 14:24But are these tribes really concerned about honoring?
- 14:28David answer? No one because in just a moment
- 14:32here, they're going to divide from David in a Split Second.
- 14:36What they are concerned about here is that they were not
- 14:39honored in their pursuit of honoring David.
- 14:43It's amazing, what we try to defend concerning our pride.
- 14:49We want to be a part of this. Not so that David can be exalted
- 14:53but that we can be associated with his exaltation.
- 14:56And so we can share it somewhat in that exaltation, it's about
- 14:59me, it's about me, it's about what I desire and what I want
- 15:03and that's the start of much trouble.
- 15:04Is it not whenever you have even one person in a group that
- 15:09thinks that way Some kind of turbulence is on its way.
- 15:16And in the same way that Shiva appears on the scene, when he
- 15:20calculates and sees this very weak moment in the nation, it's
- 15:25no different with Satan. When Satan smells and senses in
- 15:31a group of people who are called to a higher standard, giving
- 15:35over themselves into the things of the flesh.
- 15:39The thing that the world gets concerned about position and
- 15:42prominence and me and us he comes when he comes, he stirs.
- 15:49And when he stirs who usually finds a person who is worthless
- 15:54To take the torch and to manifest what he has been doing
- 15:58for thousands and thousands of years.
- 16:01Do you know how we can eliminate that Potential Threat do the
- 16:04opposite of these men? I thought to myself if you were
- 16:07really about the honor of David, you tribes of Israel.
- 16:11Would it concern you? Why does it concern you who's in
- 16:16front of the parade? In, who's not?
- 16:18Because David is being honored, David is being exalted, remember
- 16:22fetishes. He's like zebra can take my
- 16:24land, your back, and your kingdom is back.
- 16:26That's all that matters to me. This is the opposite of that
- 16:29spirit. And if you just keep your eyes
- 16:33on Christ, you won't get caught up with who gets promoted in the
- 16:38church. Who is recognizing, who is not
- 16:41whether your acknowledged, your love your praise or not because
- 16:46of Christ is being blessed. Anyway, then what's it to you?
- 16:51You should be filled with joy. In fact, you go beyond that, you
- 16:53would be able to rejoice in the gifts of others rejoice, in the
- 16:56opportunities of others, because your object is him being
- 17:00glorified, whether you're the immediate instrument or not.
- 17:03But when that's lost. So is the the unity among the
- 17:08people of God, Shiva reared, his ugly head and he tries to
- 17:12promote Division and he does with his words.
- 17:15We have no portion in David, and we have no inheritance in the
- 17:18son of just that's disrespect. He's the king.
- 17:20No, mention of the king. An appeal back to his humble
- 17:24beginnings. This is the son of Jesse is the
- 17:27farmer's, boy. Let's get out of here and notice
- 17:30verse 2. So all the men of Israel
- 17:32withdrew from David and followed Sheba, the son of a bitch.
- 17:35Me just like that just like few verses ago you were Furious.
- 17:40That you were not included in the reinstatement re installment
- 17:44of King David and all it took was the persuasion of one man to
- 17:47have your opinion, altered concerning that same man that
- 17:50you claim to love and adore. What do we learn from this?
- 17:54Yet again, another biblical example laid out for us for you
- 17:58to realize the fickleness of man's praise and support.
- 18:03It is week. It is unpredictable.
- 18:09It is all the ways. Vacillating That's true in the
- 18:14Old Testament. Let me prove it to you in the
- 18:15new go to Acts chapter 14 quickly.
- 18:25Acts chapter 14. Paul and Barnabas are preaching
- 18:34together as a Ministry. Team, a miracle takes place.
- 18:38A man is able to walk. He sprang up and the crowd saw
- 18:43this. And in verse 11, we read in Acts
- 18:4514. And when the crowd saw what Paul
- 18:47had done, they lifted up their voices saying and like own Ian.
- 18:53The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men, Barnabas.
- 18:59They called, Zeus and Paul Hermes, because he was the chief
- 19:02speaker. So notice what happened, a
- 19:04miracle takes place at the hand of Paul, and the people see this
- 19:08and they declare them to be divine.
- 19:11These guys are Gods. They've come to visit us and so
- 19:16they ascribe Paul to be Zeus incarnate and they ascribe
- 19:20Barnabas here. Excuse me, Barnabas Jesus, and
- 19:22Paul to be Hermes. And so, now they exalt them to
- 19:26godhood, they're literally ready to worship them and they tend to
- 19:30and the men ran their garments and They begged them not to, but
- 19:33I want you to see this for a moment.
- 19:34How much higher can you esteem? A man than this, your from
- 19:39heaven? You're a God.
- 19:43There's No One Like You unparalleled.
- 19:48And then you scroll down. And almost seamless transition
- 19:52verse 19 occurs and it's just stunning.
- 19:55But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and having persuaded the
- 19:59crowds. They Stone Paul, and drag them
- 20:02out of the city other than last very long did it.
- 20:06One moment you're a God. The next thing is you're stoned
- 20:09and you're thrown out of the city like trash.
- 20:12So why do you get all hot and bothered?
- 20:14When somebody says they don't like you, for no justifiable
- 20:17cause why are you so concerned? When that person unfollowed you
- 20:21on Instagram? Why are you so moved even when
- 20:28adoration is showered upon you who cares?
- 20:32Those opinions are just as valuable as what we see here,
- 20:35with David and with Paul, aim for the honor and the
- 20:39Commendation that comes from God.
- 20:43Not only will, you know maximum-security you will know
- 20:46maximum Delight, you will know a name of just an immovable sense
- 20:52of peace and joy and strength when your object is him and him
- 20:57alone. You look to men even men from
- 21:00your own from your own tribe tribe, a faith and you try to
- 21:04pull out of them and fish for compliments to try to make you
- 21:09feel more valuable and work and worthy.
- 21:11You're in trouble. Keep your eyes on him and you'll
- 21:16be safe. So, these men one day, they
- 21:18praise in the next day, they part ways.
- 21:20And look at verse 3, and David came to his house at Jerusalem
- 21:23and the King took 10 concubines. The 10 concubines whom he left
- 21:27to care for the house and put them in a house on regard and
- 21:30provided for them but did not go into them.
- 21:33That's it. That's a Biblical way of veiling
- 21:37sexual relations. So they were shut up until the
- 21:41day of their death living as if in widowhood, the seems like a
- 21:44very strange placement. For this scene, you have a man
- 21:49who creates division of a man who's trying to cause an
- 21:51uprising. And you would think now we're
- 21:53going to continue in that theme and all of a sudden, now, we're
- 21:56transferred over to David going into his house and dealing with
- 21:59matters of his own home. And this is not random.
- 22:03This is not poor authorship, there's a design behind this.
- 22:06There is something for us to consider before we move on.
- 22:10Up to this point we have seen David weather and endure severe
- 22:14chastisement from God. The Lord has been disciplining
- 22:18David and that discipline is still continuing actually it
- 22:21will until the day he dies. And what you see here is that
- 22:25when David returns home, he had his many wives and concubines,
- 22:31right in that home, they were defiled by Absalom and David
- 22:35respectively, and Tenderly, put some aside, put some in place,
- 22:39provides for them and he tries to do what he can to extend love
- 22:44and compassion. Absalom sun' ruin, not just his
- 22:49own life, but the lives of others, that's what's intends to
- 22:52do. And these women are permanently
- 22:54altered for the rest of their lives.
- 22:56David chooses to refrain from engaging with them.
- 22:58And I think that's the main point.
- 23:00The Holy Spirit highlights, he did not go into them.
- 23:05He did that know them in that way.
- 23:08You know, what's amazing? Unless I missed it, there is not
- 23:12one mention. After this chapter of David,
- 23:15adding to his wives or acquiring more concubines, you will not
- 23:19see it. And I think the reason why we're
- 23:22seeing this here is to show the fruit of the chastisement.
- 23:26That David was undergoing. He's becoming a new person.
- 23:34In the very same house where David's unbridled lust was acted
- 23:38upon, do we see David returning to?
- 23:41But as a new man, he returns to his home and he is a different
- 23:46conviction, is a different frame of mind and if there is any
- 23:51indication that he has close relations with a woman, we see
- 23:56that even the Holy Spirit tells us then like we see in First
- 23:59Kings chapter one with abishag, right?
- 24:01The shunammite who's assigned to David to keep him warm in bed.
- 24:04In his old age, we're told even there but David did not know
- 24:07her. To reinforce David really did
- 24:12change. He did become a new person, one
- 24:16of the reasons, the Lord chastises his children and it is
- 24:19this for our good and that we might share in his Holiness.
- 24:24That's the ultimate goal that when the Lord chisels you as
- 24:27painful as it may be when he afflicts your body when he
- 24:30causes disruption, to bring you to your knees to get your
- 24:33attention. It's because he wants you to
- 24:36become like him. And David is doing that.
- 24:41David is submitting and yielding to the discipline of God and
- 24:45it's actually working Here's the thing.
- 24:49God doesn't just want you to acknowledge sin.
- 24:53He wants you to abandon it. Early in my Christian walk.
- 24:58I've met some people who do not believe in the doctrine of
- 25:01repentance because they believe that to repent means to work.
- 25:07And so if you repent of your sin and Believe on, Jesus Christ,
- 25:10that is a work based gospel. There's a whole camp that
- 25:12believes that. So if you ask these people, what
- 25:15do you believe about repentance well though?
- 25:17Go to the Greek and say it's the word metanoia, and the word
- 25:19metanoia, simply means change of mind.
- 25:21So when the Bible says, repent is really synonymous with
- 25:24believe, change your mind about Christ and believe that you
- 25:28can't work for your salvation that he did it for you and
- 25:30that's it. Oh, that's a big part of it but
- 25:34you can't change your mind about Christ unless you're willing to
- 25:36also change your mind. Sin and you can't change your
- 25:40mind about Sin and not affect the way you deal with sin.
- 25:46I don't understand where they're coming from.
- 25:48So you're expecting me to change my mind about who God is and who
- 25:51I am. And that not affect the way I
- 25:54live. It's absurd.
- 25:57It's contrary to the will of God, David acknowledged before
- 26:00the prophet I have sinned. But God doesn't just want you to
- 26:05be able to label what is sin or confess your sin.
- 26:07He wants you to walk away from it.
- 26:10He wants you to change your attitude toward it.
- 26:12And that's what we see here. This man recognised his sin he
- 26:16recognized what his loose standards concerning women and
- 26:19marriage brought him to. And so now after a season of
- 26:22being under the heavy hand of the Lord, he comes back and He
- 26:25sets his Affairs in order not for the sake of these woman but
- 26:28to show I'm a different man so we get that Insight.
- 26:33Wow. What's happening with David?
- 26:35At least we should and now we continue back to the main theme
- 26:37in the main story verse 4. And the King said to a masseuse
- 26:42call the men of Judah together to me, within three days and be
- 26:47here yourself. So amasa went to summon Judah
- 26:50but he delayed beyond the set time that had been appointed to
- 26:55him, who was the original commander of, David's Army,
- 27:00joab, but job was replaced by his cousin, I'm Assad.
- 27:07So David now, some enzyme assay says, listen if we don't get to
- 27:10this quick, we're in trouble. We got a quench.
- 27:13This fire that Sheba sparked. Let's deal with this time is of
- 27:16the essence. Here's what I'm asking you to
- 27:18do. Go.
- 27:19And recruit the men, you have three days.
- 27:21I need you to be here with all of them, you got it?
- 27:24Yes, sir. And he makes his way out.
- 27:28You and I have already established concerning Sheba are
- 27:31scuse me current concerning. I Masa that David made a choice
- 27:35to electing him and promoting him to the general of his army
- 27:38for two reasons. One was what Politics.
- 27:43And the other one also starts with a P, personal good.
- 27:48Set aside the personal for a moment because the personal
- 27:51reason is because he wanted to get back at Joy, you killed my
- 27:54son, you're no longer because I know how much you love your
- 27:56position job. So I'm replacing you with
- 28:00somebody else and he does, but that's a secondary reason.
- 28:03The primary reason is because in order to reconcile with this
- 28:06nation of rebels, that sided with Absalom, David wanted to
- 28:09prove his willingness to forgive and he does.
- 28:11So by using Amazon has an example.
- 28:13Look, I'm willing to take the guy that worked with Absalom as
- 28:17his General and make him my own, huh really?
- 28:21Hey look if he's willing to do that.
- 28:23Then surely he's willing to reconcile with us and that was
- 28:25it that was a major motivation for a masseur to be where he's
- 28:28at. That a mistake.
- 28:30Yes, we are. Rio determined that because
- 28:33David was willing to dismiss the lack of qualifications, in
- 28:37amasa, for political Gain, No matter how good that political
- 28:42game might have been, it ended up coming back to bite him.
- 28:47And so a Masai here, Was not set up to be a leader of an army.
- 28:52How do we know that? Exactly.
- 29:00When he works for Absalom with a much larger army with many more
- 29:04resources, he still couldn't defeat David and his forces.
- 29:09And David was willing to overlook that David was only to
- 29:12say come on my team. And when he does, it hurts him.
- 29:20Is there a lesson here for us? Absolutely, especially for
- 29:24leaders. And here's the lesson, leaders
- 29:26have to be careful. Of ignoring God's Blueprints and
- 29:31his standards. For how his church should
- 29:35operate pertaining to positions of pertaining to practices in
- 29:40the name of helping, the people of God, because like a Mossad
- 29:45whenever we compromise, no matter how good our intentions
- 29:48are it will end up hurting. The people of God, more than
- 29:51anything else. Is that understood?
- 29:54David, I believe David's reasonings were very good.
- 29:59He wanted to manifest kindness and he did so by doing
- 30:03something. He shouldn't have done only to
- 30:06satisfy some immediate goal. And in time the very same people
- 30:11that he tried to appease were the very same people who are now
- 30:14put in danger. It ain't different in the
- 30:17church. My friend, it's not But we want
- 30:20to bring in more people, we want to, we want to let their guard
- 30:24down, we want them to see that we are just like them.
- 30:27We want them to understand that we are human.
- 30:29We're not holier than thou and so we make all these decisions.
- 30:32We apply all these strategies thinking that they will come
- 30:36thinking that they will absorb thinking that they will end up
- 30:38believing when in reality, you've created a greater mess
- 30:41than what you started with. Because if you bring in people
- 30:45for carnal reasons, then you must keep people with carnal
- 30:47methods. and I've seen this, I'm not just seeing this from
- 30:52Beyond, I've seen this firsthand with people, and I've heard the
- 30:55woes of some Elders, realizing the trouble that they've gotten
- 30:58themselves into because now they have to make one of two choices
- 31:02one to either again, to keep the people to maintain that tone of
- 31:09compromise to maintain that tone of something, Beyond with the
- 31:12scripture demands, Or to make a decision.
- 31:16At this point, we have to say something true.
- 31:19And the Temptation is not too because they know they're going
- 31:21to lose two-thirds of their people.
- 31:25So David's relations with Amazon.
- 31:26Here's a wonderful illustration of ensuring, listen to this,
- 31:30even in your own life, you may not be a pastor, but you're a
- 31:32person who makes decisions about people.
- 31:35To make a decision. Hear me.
- 31:37Hear me hear me? Trust the truth.
- 31:41All the time. Trust the truth all the time.
- 31:46What does that mean? Disassociate, your feelings and
- 31:50disassociate your human wisdom when it comes to what God has
- 31:54clearly said about a particular situation or person abandoned
- 31:59self and cling to God's mind and heart and you will know success
- 32:04You will know success just trust his blueprint, no matter how
- 32:08difficult, no matter how. Every fiber of your being says,
- 32:12it could be better if we go this way.
- 32:15Don't don't. He's God's word is true, and let
- 32:20every man be a liar, including you and me.
- 32:24Notice no amens but it's true. Anyhow.
- 32:28Amazon delayed. A mr.
- 32:32Delayed. He proved his incompetency.
- 32:35He didn't show up. Now, there's debate about why he
- 32:37delayed but it left enough time for people to speculate.
- 32:44And notice what David says, exactly the point that I was
- 32:46making verse 6 and David said to abishai now Sheba, the son of
- 32:50bichri will do us more harm than Absalom.
- 32:54Take your Lord's servants and pursue him less.
- 32:56He get himself to fortified cities and escape from us.
- 32:59Think about that, Sheba? The son of bichri will do us
- 33:01more harm than up, some more harm than Absalom.
- 33:04David is aware of the capability of Sheba, and he was aware that
- 33:09I masses weakness and inability to be who he was called to be
- 33:13contributed to a potential catastrophe.
- 33:18That could have been avoided if David just bit his tongue. if
- 33:22David put aside his political motivations and put aside his
- 33:26personal ambition and just trusted simple wisdom, So, what
- 33:32happens? He has to replace.
- 33:34Amasa ain't no way that he's going to choose joab.
- 33:37So he goes with abishai, abishai.
- 33:39Is given David enough headaches, right?
- 33:41But he's better than joab abhishekam here.
- 33:44Listen, I need you to deal with Chiba, all right?
- 33:47Fetch for him. And you know what to do.
- 33:49If we don't, it's going to get ugly.
- 33:51Time is of the essence, every minute matters, go.
- 33:55Abishai goes and their verse 7 went out after him jobs men and
- 33:59the Cara thights in the pellet fights and all the Mighty Men.
- 34:04Why doesn't anybody make it movie out of David's life?
- 34:06Like a long extended more a series please.
- 34:09If you're going to put your money on that thing, if you're
- 34:10going to put your money in any kind of entertainment, let it be
- 34:13God's most amazing. Insight about a man's life.
- 34:18In the Old Testament. That's debatable.
- 34:21I guess they went out from Jerusalem and pursue Sheba the
- 34:26son of bichri. Now something interesting
- 34:28happens because joab here sees an opportunity himself, amisom
- 34:34messed up. This is my chance to reclaim my
- 34:38position. And so, you're going to see a
- 34:40shift of the balances of power here.
- 34:43Abishai, replaces a Mossad. Remember those names, right?
- 34:49Joab. Realizes, this is my chance.
- 34:53And so, you're going to see now just in a very subtle way, job
- 34:56is going to take the prominent Place.
- 34:59Although abishai was put in charge and it's all going to
- 35:03take place with an encounter with amasa Verse 8, when they
- 35:09were at the great stone. That is in gibeon.
- 35:11A Masa came to me that this guy just shows up out of nowhere.
- 35:15Like, where have you been, you just appears out of the forest?
- 35:18I don't know how it happened. He just shows up, like I think
- 35:21we're called to come here, right?
- 35:23He hears the news maybe of what's Happening of the new
- 35:25mission. This is interesting.
- 35:29Now joab was wearing a soldier's garment look out descriptive.
- 35:33The Bible is here. And over it was a belt with a
- 35:37sword in its sheath fast and on his thigh.
- 35:41And as you went forward, it fell out.
- 35:44Wonder if it looked accidental, I wonder if he made it look
- 35:47accidental. The sword kind of falls out.
- 35:51Obviously he has to grab it. So doesn't look that suspicious
- 35:54that you're just picking up your tool.
- 35:57Picks up the sword with his left hand and job set to amasa.
- 36:03Is it well with you, my brother? And job took amasa by the beard
- 36:09with his right hand and to kiss him.
- 36:13But Emma said do not observe the sword that was in jobs hand.
- 36:16So job struck him with it in the stomach and Spilled his entrails
- 36:21to the ground without striking a second blow and he died.
- 36:27I have a feeling this is not a Sunday School Story.
- 36:32It's detailed. But it's not just for the sake
- 36:36of being detailed, it's instructive job.
- 36:39Already has a reputation of being a man who resolves to
- 36:43murder when it comes to his conflicts in life.
- 36:46He hasn't just proven it here. We've seen him deal with a
- 36:49another General early on in the reign of David.
- 36:51What's his name? Starts with the letter, A as
- 36:54well who remembers Abner Abner, right Abner.
- 36:59And what makes this man job, even more ruthless, not, not
- 37:02only his willingness to kill someone on site, but his
- 37:06implementation of deception in order to accomplish it.
- 37:10What did job do in order to cause Abner to let his guard
- 37:15down? How did he kill him more
- 37:17specifically? Where did he kill him?
- 37:19Who remembers that bible study? All very good David.
- 37:24I would expect that from David and our study of David He brings
- 37:30him to the gate of the City of Refuge in Hebron and he kills
- 37:34him there. How grotesque, how evil, how
- 37:37Wicked that in a proximity where you're supposed to be safe?
- 37:42For the very same crime, you committed, you kill a man.
- 37:46And we see this man committing, a very similar crime, though,
- 37:48with a different shade of this deception, he approaches amasa
- 37:55and notice his language, notice his actions.
- 37:58First thing he does, is he greets him with a sense of love
- 38:01and tenderness and affection. He asked about his well-being,
- 38:05is it? Well with you, my brother?
- 38:09And then he leans in. Remember, you can just imagine
- 38:12the site. Perhaps, the weapon just
- 38:14stumbled out. He picks it up, he approaches
- 38:16him, is it well with you? My brother, he takes his right
- 38:20hand. Grabs him by the beard and
- 38:22kisses him. Now, that might be strange to
- 38:24you, but it ain't for us middle easterners, right?
- 38:28Men, great men. That way woman, great woman.
- 38:31That way your culture might do it to you.
- 38:33Probably seen in wonder what's Happening Here?
- 38:37All right. And so he leans in and he kisses
- 38:40him as a form of salutation. But in doing that, with his left
- 38:47hand, he thrust into the very core of, emesis, being this men
- 38:52must have been very strong because he didn't need a second
- 38:54strike and kills him with that one.
- 38:57Blow. The deceptiveness of Joy up
- 39:01here. Speaks of the trickery of sin
- 39:05temptation greets you with a kiss but in its heart and its
- 39:10desire and it's mine is to put you to an end.
- 39:15And like Amazon's inattentiveness, if we are not
- 39:19walking in the spirit, if we are not filled with the word of God,
- 39:22if we are not discipline ourselves to fellowship with the
- 39:25Lord and know the Lord, then we too can fail to see the
- 39:29deception of sin in our lives. How it approaches?
- 39:33How it creeps in? How it is packaged, and it looks
- 39:37like a warm embrace. When in reality.
- 39:40It has a knife in his hand. I don't I don't just say that
- 39:44about obvious sin. I think this is true for
- 39:46Antichrist, Audiology 's and philosophies and mantras and
- 39:51agendas and narratives. If you are not sharp with your
- 39:57your discernment that comes through a regular exercising of
- 40:01the word of God, a life of prayer, you'll look at the lips
- 40:05but you won't see the hands and you let your guard down and when
- 40:09you let your guard down how do you let your guard down in New
- 40:11Covenant sense? Jesus said Watch and Pray.
- 40:14Watch and Pray. Be aware be aware.
- 40:17How many of us this is just this is just a test and we don't
- 40:21answer it but how many of us are daily aware?
- 40:26Not the moment you step out of your front door, but the moment
- 40:28you open your eyelids on your bed Warfare is ready.
- 40:33How many of us really think like that?
- 40:36How many of us are fully convinced in aware that every
- 40:39single waking moment, Satan and his minions, especially, if
- 40:43you're walking in active obedience to the will of God,
- 40:45wants to find a way to hinder you and to taint, your
- 40:48testimony. I don't know.
- 40:53But here we see, amasa was not where he was supposed to be in
- 40:57terms of his understanding of his surroundings of the people
- 41:00of the threats around him, and it cost him his life.
- 41:04It cost him his life, but I learned something else hear
- 41:06about jobs. Packaged friendship.
- 41:12Go to Romans chapter 16 quickly. Since we're talking about
- 41:17kissing. Let's go to Romans chapter 16.
- 41:27In verse 16. What is Paul tell this church to
- 41:33do? Greet one.
- 41:36Another with a holy kiss, All the Churches of Christ, greet
- 41:41you. This is not the only place where
- 41:44we were told in the New Testament to greet one another.
- 41:46With a holy kiss, there is actually a total of how many
- 41:50times do you think, who says twice?
- 41:53Who says Thrice who says for? Nobody's going to participate.
- 42:03There is a total of five times. That the New Testament
- 42:09encourages the saints of God to greet one another with either
- 42:13kiss, a holy kiss or a kiss of love, right?
- 42:20Now, here's the thing. I already mentioned that in
- 42:22David's time, it was a cultural norm for men.
- 42:25And men woman woman to greet one another in this way to express
- 42:30love and affection in a very pure manner, right?
- 42:32We see that even cultures today and it was true of Paul's day,
- 42:35it was true for them. It was true for the surrounding
- 42:38Gentiles that he dealt with, so seems strange That how many
- 42:44people interpret this verse, as make sure that you greet one
- 42:47another in a very pure and unromantic and very honorable
- 42:52fashion when it was something that they just did.
- 42:56Shirley Paul though. That could be part of what he's
- 43:00saying. There is something that he has
- 43:02in mind that's deeper than hey, don't be inappropriate with
- 43:05people in church. Could it be that when Paul says
- 43:10greet one another with a holy kiss?
- 43:14That he's instructing the people of God who interact with one
- 43:17another on a regular basis to be free from deception and
- 43:20Apocrypha. See and how you deal with one
- 43:23another In other words, when you hug that brother, who walks
- 43:30through those doors, one of the time, the pastor says, well, why
- 43:33don't you just greet one another?
- 43:35Before we sit down and you turn around and you give a hug to
- 43:37that lady and you ask her, how she's doing and you ask her
- 43:42about her children and you asked about what's been going on in
- 43:46their lives and their walk with the Lord.
- 43:50That, at the same time, your heart doesn't have Envy toward
- 43:54them. Jealousy.
- 43:57Hatred criticism. that while you smile at them on Sunday morning,
- 44:05Tuesday, night with the gals, you're murdering their
- 44:07reputation. You're slandering their name and
- 44:12dragging it in the dirt. You kiss them on the cheek but
- 44:16you have a sword in your left hand.
- 44:19Could it be that what Paul is saying is, don't be like joab.
- 44:24Don't be a Judas who hailed King Jesus but wanted to arrest him
- 44:28the very same tonight. Greet one.
- 44:32Another with a holy kiss, let your greeting be genuine and
- 44:38that's why Paul though he says, holy kiss over and over Peter
- 44:41says in First Peter 514 to give a kiss of love.
- 44:45It's synonymous love. Let there be sincere, love among
- 44:51the Brethren that there be a transparency.
- 44:55Don't be one thing. Outwardly in something else.
- 44:57Inwardly don't be like joab. Who can say how are you brother?
- 45:00But you Really want to kill them.
- 45:05That's what I think. Giving a holy kiss means, it's
- 45:09not about figuring out whether or not we should kiss each other
- 45:11in the 21st century, okay? Something much deeper than that
- 45:16and I think we have biblical examples of what an Unholy
- 45:18Kisses. One of the main ones is joab
- 45:21here. So we come to 2nd Samuel 20
- 45:24again. And see here in verse 10.
- 45:33But I'm a sudden observed, the sword, right?
- 45:36And we continue in verse 11, and one of jobs, young men, took a
- 45:40stand by Amazon and said, whoever favors joab and whoever
- 45:45is for David, let him follow joab.
- 45:49And I'm a suddenly wallowing in his blood in the highway and
- 45:54anyone who came by seeing him stopped.
- 45:58And when the man saw that all the people stopped, he carried a
- 46:02messiah out of the highway into the field and through a garment
- 46:06over him. When he was taken out of the
- 46:09highway, all the people went on after job to pursue Sheba the
- 46:13son of Dorothy. And so the sight of this man's
- 46:16murder was just horrific. There he is wallowing in his
- 46:20blood and these men who are called to pursue Sheba couldn't
- 46:23move forward because they were absolutely stunned by what just
- 46:27happened. Like we just killed our
- 46:30commander. Specifically Joy.
- 46:33I've just killed our commander and they were, they were
- 46:35paralyzed. Perhaps by the the sheer evil of
- 46:40what just took place and the man realized he's like okay this is
- 46:43obviously hindering us so he wraps his body and he throws him
- 46:46out to a field and out of sight out of mind, right?
- 46:51That's what they try to do in Canada.
- 46:52I don't know what happens here. I don't go to gas stations to
- 46:55too often I guess, but when you, when you go to gas stations in
- 46:58Canada, this happened years ago, they put the cigarettes Behind
- 47:02these drawers and they think they thought, psychologically,
- 47:05if you don't see the cigarettes, then you're not going to want to
- 47:08ask for cigarettes or not going to be as tempted to want to
- 47:10smoke. And so they try all these ways
- 47:13of keeping these things out of your vision so that you would
- 47:16not entertain it further. And so we see here that there is
- 47:22an obvious obstacle here with this evil and so let's just try
- 47:25to bury the evil and we don't want joab to be reconsidered as
- 47:31our new leader. And so let's just hide away the
- 47:34evidence and let's just move forward in and people today are
- 47:37willing to ignore the evil that others commit because they
- 47:40promised so much. That's why people are willing to
- 47:42follow so many politicians in certain directions and are
- 47:45willing to follow so many celebrities and their way of
- 47:47thinking. And they're willing to look over
- 47:49all these Other evil things. Because they want something else
- 47:56and that person has something to offer and that's exactly what
- 47:59happens, right? They followed job verse 14 and
- 48:04sheba, passed through all the tribes of Israel, to a bow or
- 48:08able of Beth maachah and all the big critz assembled and followed
- 48:12him in how many tribes joined Sheba.
- 48:15When he first said, we have no portion in David and we have no
- 48:19inheritance in the son of Jesse. 10, 10 and no more than three
- 48:28days in a little bit when we are reintroduced.
- 48:31Toshiba. what are the support dwindle down to Look at this.
- 48:37And she passed through all the tribes of Israel and look and
- 48:40all the big critz assembled and followed him in the only people
- 48:45that followed him were the people of his own Clan.
- 48:49You went from ten tribes not to people from your own family, not
- 48:54very impressive. Maybe he wasn't as persuasive.
- 49:00Absalom was we don't know. I'd like to believe that in
- 49:03great part David swiftness in dealing with Sheba Hindered him
- 49:11from becoming more effective in organized and trying to convince
- 49:15and persuade others to join him. The willingness of David not to
- 49:19delay any longer. But to deal with this leaven
- 49:23right away, perhaps contributed to his early success and you and
- 49:29I should have the very same attitude. when it comes to all
- 49:33the other obstacles in our Christian Life, when sits in is
- 49:37in seed form, when it's just a thought that keeps reoccurring
- 49:41and visiting you, when it keeps you up at night, when it has you
- 49:46browsing on the internet when it has you looking on things where,
- 49:50you know, where this can lead to, but you just want to out of
- 49:52curiosity, know something, when you see an issue at hand
- 49:57relationally and you can sense the tension when somebody comes
- 50:01in and I have doctrinal level or 11 or more 11, and it doesn't
- 50:05seem to be a problem at first, but you can, you can sense it.
- 50:08Have the attitude of David, we must deal with it immediately.
- 50:14I must conquer this now. Now, I must see the threat for
- 50:18what it is. Sheba was, not that big of a
- 50:22threat at this point, but David had enough insight to realize
- 50:24that, if we don't get ahold of him, it will be worse than what
- 50:28Absalom did. And we need the wisdom of God's
- 50:32word, to be able to filter. All that we see all that we
- 50:35experience all that, visits us, all the problems around us and
- 50:39to know, when to execute went to refrain and went to jump on the
- 50:42opportunity. And again, you're not listen,
- 50:46hey, this is not going to apply to you unless you have a
- 50:48revelation of the Warfare that you're in, it's not if you just
- 50:53think individually and you don't think beyond your own life.
- 50:56If you think that being a Christian simply means to have
- 50:58an easier life than those Wicked people there that are banging
- 51:01their heads against the wall and can't figure out what a woman
- 51:03is. Your Christian life is going to
- 51:06be extremely hindered. You got to look beyond that and
- 51:10see how God frames your life, and then you'll be able to
- 51:13understand and evaluate the things in your life.
- 51:16So this man was a very successful and I think in great
- 51:19part, he realized that job was on his tail.
- 51:23David did not hesitate to jump and to reach him.
- 51:27And so he fled he flees rather and he goes into this one city
- 51:31called able and he tries to hide their now, look what happens.
- 51:36And all the men who were with joy came in besiege them.
- 51:39In a bowl of Beth maachah, they cast up a mound against the city
- 51:43and its stood against the rampart and they were battering,
- 51:46the wall to throw it down. Then a wise woman called, from
- 51:51the city. Listen.
- 51:52Listen, tell, joab. Come here that I may speak to
- 51:56you and he came near and the woman said, are you joab?
- 52:00He answered, I am. And she sent them listen to the
- 52:04words of your servant and he answered I'm listening.
- 52:08And she said, they used to say in former times, let them but
- 52:11ask Council a table and so they settle the matter.
- 52:15I'm one of those who are Peaceable and faithful and
- 52:17Israel, you seek to destroy a city that his mother, a mother
- 52:21in Israel. Why will you swallow up the
- 52:23heritage of the Lord? I just love this interaction.
- 52:27You have this woman. With no name and she appears on
- 52:31the scene. And she deals with this
- 52:33bloodthirsty man, who probably had the blood of amasa still
- 52:36staining his hands. He goes.
- 52:38Where's Joe have joy and joy of comes and she goes, you willing
- 52:44to listen to yourself. Yeah, I'm willing to listen,
- 52:46it's just like, this strange shift of authority.
- 52:50Right. And so she's like confronting,
- 52:52but we're told she's a wise woman.
- 52:55And there are elements of wisdom here that we can we can apply to
- 52:58our own lives. Notice the humility of this
- 53:01woman. She didn't yell at job.
- 53:03She didn't curse job. She didn't insult.
- 53:05Joy should, are you willing to listen to me?
- 53:08Are you willing to listen to your servant?
- 53:12And so she submits herself and with the specific tone is able
- 53:16to win his attention. I know you're hot blooded and
- 53:21you think the louder you are and the more Force you use and the
- 53:25more intimidation you have, the more persuasive, you'll be
- 53:28that's not wisdom. This woman is wise, and so she
- 53:33gets this man's attention and he has, she has his ear and he
- 53:37says, in verse 20 Job, answer far be it for me far.
- 53:39Be it that I should swallow up or destroy.
- 53:43That is not true but a man of the Hill Country of Ephraim
- 53:46called Sheba. The son of bichri has lifted up
- 53:48his hand against King, David, give up him alone and I will
- 53:52withdraw from the city and the woman said to draw a behold, his
- 53:56head shall be thrown to you over the wall.
- 54:00Who is this lady? Then the woman went to all the
- 54:04people in her wisdom and they cut off the head of Sheba, the
- 54:08son of bithia, and threw it out to joab.
- 54:11So he blew the trumpet and they dispersed from the city, every
- 54:13man to his home and job returned to Jerusalem to the king.
- 54:18So much to unpack here, which I won't for the sake of time, but
- 54:22there's one point that I want to drive here.
- 54:24You have Sheba, run into this fortified City with his little
- 54:26Clan. Obviously, they convinced the
- 54:29city To hide their in to borrow anybody, namely job and David's
- 54:35men to enter in job sees this and he says, you know what,
- 54:39let's create a Siege. And what a Siege was, an Army
- 54:42surrounding a city, and you were essentially try to starve them
- 54:44out, you wouldn't let anybody go in, you wouldn't let anybody go
- 54:48out, let them run out of food, let them run out of water and
- 54:51then they eventually they'll surrender.
- 54:52That's what a Siege is, but he doesn't even wait for that.
- 54:54He creates a Siege and he's like, let's just tear the wall
- 54:57down and so they begin to Ram against the wall.
- 55:01This Woman's walls are probably shaking.
- 55:04Who knows? She obviously hears about it
- 55:06comes and confronts David or confronts Joy.
- 55:09Why are you going to destroy this whole city?
- 55:11What's the issue? Well, you have a guy in there
- 55:14that needs to be given up and so we're willing to cease from this
- 55:17destruction, doesn't have to come to this city.
- 55:20If you're just willing to give up Sheba that worthless man and
- 55:25we will move on Done. She doesn't wait another day.
- 55:29She doesn't win. Another moment.
- 55:30She goes to the other people of that City.
- 55:32He says let's just give up his head.
- 55:33If we don't give up Shiva, we're all dead.
- 55:36We're all finished and his beautiful home of ours.
- 55:40This beautiful city with a glorious reputation will be
- 55:42brought to Rubble. There is no hesitation.
- 55:44They gave up Shiva. And the lesson is this.
- 55:49That When sin enters into our lives as represented by Sheba,
- 55:53it wants to make a home with us. And you and I have to make a
- 55:58decision. to Harbor that sin or to give up that sin and if we
- 56:04choose to justify our sin just like they could have Justified
- 56:08Sheba, Then you and I too will, no further destruction.
- 56:12That could have been avoided. If we had just made the decision
- 56:14to give it up and when you choose to give up sin, make sure
- 56:20that you do. So with a decisiveness, and the
- 56:25promptness that this woman displays, How do you deal with
- 56:29sin? You don't negotiate with it.
- 56:33You don't try to come up with a deal with it.
- 56:36You cut off its head, you're not living anymore.
- 56:39You're not supposed to be here. The longer you stay here.
- 56:42The more destructive, it will be for us.
- 56:44You're out of here. And with a collective effort,
- 56:50they put Sheba to death and they resumed in their peace and joy
- 56:54undisturbed from the anointed ones, discipline expressed
- 56:58through joab. Be that aggressive.
- 57:04Don't tolerate it. Don't let it Live Another Day.
- 57:07Go for the jugular And you will know blessing.
- 57:12Wow, what an interesting story, a guy wallowing in his blood on
- 57:15the side of the street. Another man, losing his head
- 57:18Hawaii's woman engaging in a conversation with another
- 57:20murder. In the Bible.
- 57:23Exciting who says, the Bible is boring.
- 57:27Verse 23. And again, it seems like a very
- 57:32strange way to end this chapter but it's not, it's strategic.
- 57:36Now Joy was in command of all the Army of Israel, Benaiah, the
- 57:41son of jehoiada idea, where jehoiada was in command of the
- 57:44carrot sites in the Pella tights and a Duran was in charge of the
- 57:48forced labor and Jehoshaphat the son of a.
- 57:50He loved was the recorder and Shiva was secretary and zadok
- 57:53and abiathar were priests and Ira.
- 57:56The Jerry Wright was also David's priest.
- 58:00That's an interesting. Ting.
- 58:01Last verse isn't it and Ira the gyre right was also David's
- 58:05priest, the nasb would say a priest to David.
- 58:10There isn't much commentary on that.
- 58:12You know what? Some would say that there is
- 58:14something here about IRA. Playing a role in David's Life
- 58:18as a spiritual mentor. He was a priest to David, or
- 58:24David's priest. Now, if that's true, I think
- 58:26that's quite fascinating that even a man, like, David, who had
- 58:30such a connection with God. Still had somebody in his life.
- 58:34Speaking into his life. Perhaps providing instruction
- 58:38and counsel. If that's true for David.
- 58:41You spiritual person, right? How much more you and I do.
- 58:45We need overseers in our lives. Do we need mature?
- 58:48Believers who can speak into us and to guide us and correct us
- 58:52and watch over us. You will never graduate in your
- 58:56spirituality, you will never graduate from accountability.
- 59:01And your greatest accountability.
- 59:03Yes. Is the fear of God because your
- 59:04accountability partner can't go with you certain places.
- 59:08But still God has instituted that you and I would have people
- 59:10to encourage us and warn us and love us and speak into our
- 59:14lives. You can never outgrow that in
- 59:18the moment. You actually think you can is
- 59:21where you're in spiritual Danger.
- 59:25But there's more here and these are the kind of verses that were
- 59:28just like, you know, everything was so excited and we're winding
- 59:30down. So you doze off and you don't
- 59:32really consider the details. But listen to the application
- 59:35here. Look at verse 23.
- 59:37Now job was in command of all the Army of Israel.
- 59:40What? Huh?
- 59:42I thought it was a messiah. Guaymas is no longer there.
- 59:45Well, what about abishai? Well, there's a matter because
- 59:47job took over Job forcefully took back his position.
- 59:53What he always defended, what he always longed for he now has
- 59:56again, was it? Through just means, was it
- 1:00:00through a fair election? Was it through reconciliation
- 1:00:04with David? No, it was through bloodshed.
- 1:00:08This man was promoted. To the very existence of his
- 1:00:14life. The very reason why he lived,
- 1:00:16what he prized more than anything else by killing.
- 1:00:20Somebody is that fair. No.
- 1:00:22And we live in a very sinful World, whereas, you peek through
- 1:00:25this window and you look out and you see how evil and perverse
- 1:00:29men with great power or great ability.
- 1:00:33Don't get punished for this and they get promoted.
- 1:00:38Are not shun for their iniquity. They're celebrated.
- 1:00:42Are not hindered in their financial gain, they expand, and
- 1:00:46they blossom. And it doesn't seem right.
- 1:00:50Well, would you expect anything less in a very sinful broken
- 1:00:53world? But what we see with job here in
- 1:00:56his self-promotion, unbothered unchallenged by anybody.
- 1:01:02What we see with joab here is what we will see with all men
- 1:01:06who choose to live in sin job, has a Day of Reckoning.
- 1:01:11There is a precise appointment with Justice for job, and there
- 1:01:16will be for every single person who is outside of Christ.
- 1:01:19No matter how, well, they seem to be doing no matter how
- 1:01:22unbothered and unchallenged they are in this life.
- 1:01:26It's only in this life. There is a Time coming where the
- 1:01:31king will have the final say not.
- 1:01:34King, David King, Jesus. And Ecclesiastes tells us though
- 1:01:41the consequences of sin are not executed speedily men continue
- 1:01:46in their iniquity. Enjoy up here.
- 1:01:49Seems to only be winning even though he sinning.
- 1:01:53But that winning will come to an end.
- 1:01:57And the best place to be in this life.
- 1:02:00Is not the position that you desire.
- 1:02:01It's not the riches that you long for is.
- 1:02:03Not the praise that you get from Men.
- 1:02:06It's to be in the will of God and that's what I see.
- 1:02:09Also, with these final verses, we have a commentary of the
- 1:02:14restoration of the kingdom of David Wright with all the
- 1:02:18turbulence has with Absalom and then which Chiba that brief
- 1:02:21flare, The author brings us to an acknowledgement that David's
- 1:02:28government still stands and that's the joy of those final
- 1:02:33verses that the turbulence is in the trials.
- 1:02:36And the tests are many. If you are in the will of God,
- 1:02:39like David was at this point in his life, nothing can overthrow.
- 1:02:44And nothing can take you away from God's purposes.
- 1:02:49Stay there. Stay there, no matter how
- 1:02:53difficult it is, no matter the prices.
- 1:02:55You pay. Because God will hold you, he
- 1:02:57will keep you, you will be firm, and he will hold you till the
- 1:03:01end. Let's pray.
- 1:03:10Father, it is our great joy to explore the word of God.
- 1:03:15And thank you again for illustrating to us.
- 1:03:20That there is not one part of this Bible, your word that is
- 1:03:24void of instruction. Some things or perhaps were
- 1:03:32repeated some things might have been knew.
- 1:03:37Regardless, help us apply it, help us revisit it.
- 1:03:42Help us to examine ourselves. we want to be in your will and we
- 1:03:53pray that if this Bible study did anything, Made only Inspire
- 1:03:58us again to love you. And to give you our devotion, a
- 1:04:02fresh load of our hearts are cold tonight.
- 1:04:07If we've been lukewarm these past few days or weeks or
- 1:04:10months, what we're just caught up in the busyness or the
- 1:04:14silliness of this world. Please Lord rescue us, please
- 1:04:19Lord, rescue us, make us white hot.
- 1:04:22To be a worshipper to be active in obeying you to know.
- 1:04:27You were to study it, to eat it and look for things.
- 1:04:33That we are entertaining. Help us today with a new
- 1:04:38motivation, to put it to death to cut off its head to not
- 1:04:42delay. Any further that might be a
- 1:04:44relationship with somebody that we shouldn't be in a
- 1:04:45relationship with that. Might be a habit that we have
- 1:04:48justified in our conscience has become numb towards it.
- 1:04:51That might be are delaying giving you our whole complete
- 1:04:54heart. That might be something that we
- 1:04:57know we ought to do but we are not willing to do it because
- 1:05:00like David We Trust in our own wisdom than the wisdom that has
- 1:05:03been laid out for us. But whatever the case may be, we
- 1:05:07ask that this. This Bible study would not just
- 1:05:09have been an entertaining and informative time, but that Lord,
- 1:05:13it would have pressed on our hearts and that we would have
- 1:05:16sensed your voice. Because oh God, we need your
- 1:05:19voice. Oh Lord.
- 1:05:21I don't want to live without the holy spirit's influence.
- 1:05:25I pray that that would be the desire of every person that you
- 1:05:27would be real to us. And you would be close to us
- 1:05:30that we would walk with you Lord.
- 1:05:33Oh, rescue us. If we are dry fill our cups and
- 1:05:37let us overflow with love again, we look to you now as we close
- 1:05:42as we sing together the conclusion of this evening.
- 1:05:45Oh God, made it only in Rapture our hearts to be madly in love
- 1:05:50with Christ in Jesus name. Amen!
- 1:05:54Amen. There was a little verse ready
- 1:06:04for Bible. Study part 2. there's a little
- 1:06:07verse in that chapter that I loved, you know, the thing with
- 1:06:09Bible study and you can stand if you want Because we're going to
- 1:06:13sing in a moment. But it says here.
- 1:06:30In verse 2 of that, same chapter saw the men of Israel, withdrew
- 1:06:33from David and followed Sheba, the son of bichri but the men of
- 1:06:37Judah, followed their kings steadfastly from the Jordan to
- 1:06:41Jerusalem. I love that verse the majority
- 1:06:44of the tribes walked away. But Judith says here, they
- 1:06:49steadfastly followed their King steadfastly uninterrupted,
- 1:06:55unchanging unwavering Devotion to the king despite the despite
- 1:07:00the letdowns despite people's issues, you'd only people become
- 1:07:04unsteady fast when people from their own group, Cause problems,
- 1:07:10or create division. You know, trials do a lot of
- 1:07:15things. They expose people's wickedness
- 1:07:17and they expose people's Faith. I've seen that in my own life.
- 1:07:23I've seen people's True Colors surface when there are real
- 1:07:27problems among the people of God.
- 1:07:29And I've seen people shine bright for the glory of Christ
- 1:07:34in the darkest moments of their faith.
- 1:07:37And as you sing tonight, if you're a serious follower of
- 1:07:40Christ, I want you to ask the Lord, no matter who walks away.
- 1:07:47I'll want to be steadfast to my king.
- 1:07:50You got to determine that. That is the level of
- 1:07:53discipleship, that Jesus requires just as the ABCs of
- 1:07:57discipleship. If anyone would be my disciple,
- 1:08:00you got to say, love you, Mom, love you Dad, brother sister,
- 1:08:05friends that I grew up with. If you're not coming with me,
- 1:08:09I'm going alone. That is the quality of
- 1:08:12discipleship that Christ requires on a basic level.
- 1:08:18And I pray that, that would be the caliber of Christians in
- 1:08:22this place. Let's sing to the Lord together.
