Speaker 1: Second part, Chapter five, dedicated to Wilhelm Gundet my cousin
0:07
Speaker 1: in Japan. Chapter five Kamala Sad. Arthur learned something new
0:15
Speaker 1: on every step of his path, for the world was transformed,
0:20
Speaker 1: and his heart was enchanted. He saw the sun rising
0:25
Speaker 1: over the mountains with their forests, and setting over the
0:29
Speaker 1: distant beach with its palm trees. At night. He saw
0:34
Speaker 1: the stars in the sky in their fixed positions, and
0:38
Speaker 1: the crescent of the moon floating like a boat in
0:40
Speaker 1: the blue. He saw trees, stars, animals, clouds, rainbows, rocks, herbs, flowers,
0:50
Speaker 1: stream and river, the glistening dew in the bushes in
0:55
Speaker 1: the morning, distant high mountains which were blue and pale.
1:00
Speaker 1: Birds sang, and bees wind silverishly blew through the rice field.
1:07
Speaker 1: All of this, a thousandfold and colorful had always been there, always.
1:15
Speaker 1: The sun and the moon had shone always, the rivers
1:18
Speaker 1: had roared, and the bees had buzzed. But in former times,
1:23
Speaker 1: all of this had been nothing more, to said Arthur,
1:26
Speaker 1: than a fleeting, deceptive veil before his eyes, looked upon
1:31
Speaker 1: in distrust, destined to be penetrated and destroyed by thought,
1:36
Speaker 1: since it was not the essential existence, Since this essence
1:40
Speaker 1: lay beyond, on the other side of the visible. But
1:45
Speaker 1: now his liberated eyes stayed on this side. He saw
1:50
Speaker 1: and became aware of the visible, sought to be at
1:53
Speaker 1: home in this world, did not seek for the true essence,
1:58
Speaker 1: did not aim at a world beyond. Beautiful was this world,
2:04
Speaker 1: looking at it thus without searching, thus simply, thus childlike.
2:12
Speaker 1: Beautiful were the moon and the stars. Beautiful was the
2:15
Speaker 1: stream and the banks, the forest and the rocks, the
2:19
Speaker 1: goat and the gold beetle, the flower and the butterfly.
2:24
Speaker 1: Beautiful and lovely. It was thus to walk through the
2:29
Speaker 1: world thus childlike, thus awoken, thus open to what is near,
2:37
Speaker 1: thus without distrust. Differently, the sun burnt the head, differently,
2:45
Speaker 1: the shade of the forest cooled him down. Differently, the
2:49
Speaker 1: stream and the cistern, the pumpkin and the banana tasted short.
2:55
Speaker 1: Were the days short, the nights. Every hour sped away
3:00
Speaker 1: like a sail on the sea. And under the sail
3:03
Speaker 1: was a ship of treasures, full of joy. Siddarthur saw
3:09
Speaker 1: a group of apes moving through the high canopy of
3:12
Speaker 1: the forest, high in the branches, and heard their savage,
3:17
Speaker 1: greedy song. SidD Arthur saw a male sheep, following a
3:23
Speaker 1: female one and mating with her. In a lake of reeds,
3:28
Speaker 1: he saw the pike hungrily hunting for its dinner, propelling
3:32
Speaker 1: themselves away from it in fear. Wriggling and sparkling. The
3:38
Speaker 1: young fish jumped in droves out of the water. The
3:42
Speaker 1: scent of strength and passion came forcefully out of the
3:46
Speaker 1: hasty eddies of the water, which the pike stirred up
3:50
Speaker 1: impetuously hunting. All of this had always existed, and he
3:56
Speaker 1: had not seen it. He had not been with it.
4:00
Speaker 1: Now he was with it. He was part of it.
4:04
Speaker 1: Light and shadow ran through his eyes, stars and moon
4:08
Speaker 1: ran through his heart. On the way, Siddartha also remembered
4:13
Speaker 1: everything he had experienced in the garden Jetavana, the teaching
4:18
Speaker 1: he had heard there, the divine Buddha, the farewell to Govinda,
4:23
Speaker 1: the conversation with the Exalted One. Again he remembered his
4:28
Speaker 1: own words. He had spoken to the Exalted One, every word,
4:33
Speaker 1: and with astonishment he became aware of the fact that
4:37
Speaker 1: there he had said things which he had not really
4:40
Speaker 1: known yet at this time. What he had said to Gautama,
4:45
Speaker 1: his the Buddha's treasure and secret, was not the teaching,
4:49
Speaker 1: but the unexpressible and not teachable, which he had experienced
4:55
Speaker 1: in the hour of its enlightenment. It was nothing but
4:59
Speaker 1: this very thing what he now began to experience. Now
5:04
Speaker 1: he had to experience his self. It is true that
5:09
Speaker 1: he had already known for a long time that his
5:12
Speaker 1: self was Utman in its essence, bearing the same eternal
5:18
Speaker 1: characteristics as Brahman. But never had he really found this self,
5:23
Speaker 1: because he had wanted to capture it in the net
5:26
Speaker 1: of thought, with the body definitely not being the self
5:31
Speaker 1: and not the spectacle of the senses. So it also
5:36
Speaker 1: was not the thought, not the rational mind, not the
5:41
Speaker 1: learned wisdom, not the learned ability to draw conclusions and
5:47
Speaker 1: to develop previous thoughts into new ones. No, this world
5:53
Speaker 1: of thought was also still on this side, and nothing
5:58
Speaker 1: could be achieved by killing the random self of the
6:02
Speaker 1: senses if the random self of the thoughts and learned
6:06
Speaker 1: knowledge was fattened. On the other hand, both the thoughts
6:12
Speaker 1: as well as the senses were pretty things. The ultimate
6:17
Speaker 1: meaning was hidden behind both of them. Both had to
6:20
Speaker 1: be listened to, both had to be played with. Both,
6:25
Speaker 1: neither had to be scorned nor overestimated from both The
6:32
Speaker 1: secret voices of the innermost truth had to be attentively perceived.
6:38
Speaker 1: He wanted to strive for nothing except for what the
6:42
Speaker 1: voice commanded him to strive for, dwell on nothing except
6:47
Speaker 1: where the voice would advise him to do so. Why
6:52
Speaker 1: had Gautama at that time, in the hour of all hours,
6:57
Speaker 1: sat down under the bow tree where the law hit him?
7:01
Speaker 1: He had heard a voice, a voice in his own heart,
7:05
Speaker 1: which had commanded him to seek rest under this tree.
7:09
Speaker 1: And he had neither preferred self castigation, offerings, ablutions, nor prayer,
7:16
Speaker 1: neither food nor drink, neither sleep nor dream. He had
7:21
Speaker 1: obeyed the voice to obey like this, not to an
7:26
Speaker 1: external command, only to the voice to be ready like this.
7:31
Speaker 1: This was good, This was necessary. Nothing else was necessary.
7:39
Speaker 1: In the night, when he slept in the straw heart
7:42
Speaker 1: of a ferryman by the river, Siddhartha had a dream.
7:47
Speaker 1: Govinda was standing in front of him, dressed in the
7:50
Speaker 1: yellow robe of an ascetic sad was how Govinda looked like? Sadly,
7:57
Speaker 1: he asked, why have you forsaken me? At this he
8:03
Speaker 1: embraced Govinda, wrapped his arms around him, and as he
8:07
Speaker 1: was pulling him close to his chest and kissed him.
8:11
Speaker 1: It was not Govinda anymore, but a woman, and a
8:14
Speaker 1: full breast popped out of the woman's dress, at which
8:18
Speaker 1: Siddartha lay and drank sweetly and strongly tasted the milk
8:24
Speaker 1: from this breast. It tasted of woman and man, of sun,
8:30
Speaker 1: and forest, of animal and flower, of every fruit, of
8:35
Speaker 1: every joyful desire. It intoxicated him and rendered him unconscious.
8:42
Speaker 1: When Siddartha woke up, the pale river shimmered through the
8:46
Speaker 1: door of the hut, and in the forest a dark
8:50
Speaker 1: call of an owl resounded deeply and pleasantly. When the
8:56
Speaker 1: day began, Siddartha asked his host, the ferryman, to get
9:00
Speaker 1: him across the river. The ferryman got him across the
9:03
Speaker 1: river on his bamboo raft. The wide water shimmered reddishly
9:08
Speaker 1: in the light of the morning. This is a beautiful river,
9:13
Speaker 1: he said to his companion. Yes, said the ferryman, A
9:18
Speaker 1: very beautiful river. I love it more than anything. Often
9:23
Speaker 1: I have listened to it. Often I have looked into
9:27
Speaker 1: its eyes, and always I have learned from it. Much
9:31
Speaker 1: can be learned from a river. I thank you, my benefactor,
9:36
Speaker 1: spoke said Arthur, disembarking on the other side of the river.
9:41
Speaker 1: I have no gift I could give you for your hospitality,
9:44
Speaker 1: my dear, and also no payment for your work. I
9:48
Speaker 1: am a man without a home, a son of a
9:51
Speaker 1: Brahman and a Samana. I did see it, spoke the ferryman,
9:57
Speaker 1: and I haven't expected any payment from you, and no gifts,
10:01
Speaker 1: which would be the custom for guests to bear. You
10:05
Speaker 1: will give me the gift another time, do you think so,
10:10
Speaker 1: asked said Arthur, amusedly. Surely these two I have learned
10:16
Speaker 1: from the river. Everything is coming back you too, Samana
10:21
Speaker 1: will come back now. Farewell. Let your friendship be my reward.
10:27
Speaker 1: Commemorate me when you'll make your offerings to the gods. Smiling,
10:34
Speaker 1: they parted. Smiling, said Arthur was happy about the friendship
10:39
Speaker 1: and the kindness of the fairy man. He is like Govinda,
10:44
Speaker 1: he thought, with a smile. All I meet on my
10:47
Speaker 1: path are like Govinda. All are thankful, though they are
10:52
Speaker 1: the ones who would have a right to receive thanks.
10:56
Speaker 1: All are submissive, All would like to be friends, like
11:01
Speaker 1: to obey, think little, like children are all people. At
11:08
Speaker 1: about noon, he came through a village. In front of
11:12
Speaker 1: the mud cottages, children were rolling about in the street
11:16
Speaker 1: were playing with pumpkin seeds and seashells, screamed and wrestled,
11:21
Speaker 1: but they all timidly fled from the unknown Samana. In
11:26
Speaker 1: the end of the village, the path led through a stream,
11:30
Speaker 1: and by the side of the stream, a young woman
11:32
Speaker 1: was kneeling and washing clothes. When sid Arthur greeted her,
11:38
Speaker 1: she lifted her head and looked up to him with
11:40
Speaker 1: a smile, so that he saw the white in her
11:43
Speaker 1: eyes glistening. He called out a blessing to her, as
11:48
Speaker 1: is the custom among travelers, and asked how far he
11:52
Speaker 1: still had to go to reach the large city. Then
11:56
Speaker 1: she got up and came to him beautifully. Her wet
12:00
Speaker 1: mouth was shimmering in her young face. She exchanged humorous
12:05
Speaker 1: banter with him, asked whether he had eaten already, and
12:09
Speaker 1: whether it was true that the Samanas slept alone in
12:12
Speaker 1: the forest at night and were not allowed to have
12:15
Speaker 1: any women with them. While talking, she put her left
12:19
Speaker 1: foot on his right one and made a movement as
12:23
Speaker 1: a woman does. Who would want to initiate that kind
12:26
Speaker 1: of sexual pleasure with the man, which the text books
12:30
Speaker 1: call climbing a tree? Said Arthur felt his blood heating up,
12:35
Speaker 1: and since in this moment he had to think of
12:38
Speaker 1: his dream again, he bent slightly down to the woman
12:42
Speaker 1: and kissed with his lips the brown nipple of her breast.
12:47
Speaker 1: Looking up, he saw her face smiling, full of lust,
12:52
Speaker 1: and her eyes with contracted pupils, begging with desire. Sad
12:59
Speaker 1: Darthur also felt desire and felt the source of his
13:03
Speaker 1: sexuality moving. But since he had never touched a woman before,
13:08
Speaker 1: he hesitated for a moment while his hands were already
13:12
Speaker 1: prepared to reach out for her. And in this moment
13:16
Speaker 1: he heard, shuddering with awe, the voice of his innermost self,
13:22
Speaker 1: and this voice said no. Then all charms disappeared from
13:29
Speaker 1: the young woman's smiling face. He no longer saw anything
13:33
Speaker 1: else but the damp glance of a female animal in heat. Politely,
13:39
Speaker 1: he petted her cheek, turned away from her, and disappeared
13:44
Speaker 1: from the disappointed woman with light steps into the bamboo wood.
13:50
Speaker 1: On this day, he reached the large city before the
13:53
Speaker 1: evening and was happy, for he felt the need to
13:57
Speaker 1: be among people. For a long time he had lived
14:01
Speaker 1: in the forest and the straw hut of the ferry
14:05
Speaker 1: man in which he had slept that night, had been
14:07
Speaker 1: the first roof for a long time he had had
14:10
Speaker 1: over his head before the city. In a beautifully fenced grove,
14:16
Speaker 1: the traveler came across a small group of servants, both
14:20
Speaker 1: male and female, carrying baskets in their midst Carried by
14:26
Speaker 1: four servants in an ornamental sedan chair, sat a woman,
14:31
Speaker 1: the mistress, on red pillows under a colorful canopy. Saddartha
14:37
Speaker 1: stopped at the entrance to the pleasure garden and watched
14:40
Speaker 1: the parade, saw the servants, the maids, the baskets, saw
14:45
Speaker 1: the sedan chair, and saw the lady in it, under
14:50
Speaker 1: black hair which made to tower high on her head.
14:54
Speaker 1: He saw a very fair, very delicate, very smart face,
15:00
Speaker 1: brightly red mouth like a freshly cracked fig, eyebrows which
15:05
Speaker 1: were well tended and painted in a high arch, smart
15:10
Speaker 1: and watchful dark eyes, a clear, tall neck rising from
15:15
Speaker 1: a green and golden garment, resting fair hands, long and
15:21
Speaker 1: thin with wide golden bracelets over the wrists. Saddarthur saw
15:27
Speaker 1: how beautiful she was, and his heart rejoiced. He bowed
15:33
Speaker 1: deeply when the sedan chair came closer, and straightening up again,
15:38
Speaker 1: he looked at the fair, charming face red for a
15:42
Speaker 1: moment in the smart eyes with the high arcs above
15:46
Speaker 1: breathed in a slight fragrance he did not know. With
15:52
Speaker 1: a smile, the beautiful woman nodded for a moment and
15:55
Speaker 1: disappeared into the grove, and then the servants as well.
16:00
Speaker 1: Thus I am entering this city, said Arthur thought, with
16:04
Speaker 1: a charming omen He instantly felt drawn into the grove,
16:10
Speaker 1: and he thought about it. And only now he became
16:13
Speaker 1: aware of how the servants and maids had looked at
16:16
Speaker 1: him at the entrance. How despicable, how distrustful, how rejecting.
16:24
Speaker 1: I am still a samana, he thought, I am still
16:27
Speaker 1: an ascetic and beggar. I must not remain like this.
16:32
Speaker 1: I will not be able to enter the grove like this,
16:36
Speaker 1: and he laughed. The next person who came along this path,
16:41
Speaker 1: he asked about the grove and for the name of
16:44
Speaker 1: the woman, and was told that this was the grove
16:47
Speaker 1: of Camala, the famous Courtizan, and that aside from the grove,
16:53
Speaker 1: she owned a house in the city. Then he entered
16:56
Speaker 1: the city. Now he had a goal. Pursuing his goal,
17:03
Speaker 1: he allowed the city to suck him in, drifted through
17:06
Speaker 1: the flow of the streets, stood still on the squares,
17:10
Speaker 1: rested on the stairs of stone by the river. When
17:15
Speaker 1: the evening came, he made friends with a barber's assistant
17:18
Speaker 1: whom he had seen working in the shade of an
17:21
Speaker 1: arch in a building, whom he had found again praying
17:24
Speaker 1: in a temple of Vishnu, whom he had told about
17:28
Speaker 1: stories of Vishnu and the Lakshmi. Among the boats by
17:32
Speaker 1: the river. He slept this night and early in the morning,
17:36
Speaker 1: before the first customers came into his shop, he had
17:40
Speaker 1: the barber's assistant shave his beard and cut his hair,
17:45
Speaker 1: comb his hair and anoint it with fine oil. Then
17:49
Speaker 1: he went to take his bath in the river. When
17:53
Speaker 1: late in the afternoon, beautiful Kamala approached her grove in
17:57
Speaker 1: her sedan chair, Siddhartha was standing at the entrance, made
18:02
Speaker 1: a bow and received the cortazan's greeting. But that servant,
18:08
Speaker 1: who walked at the very end of her train, he
18:11
Speaker 1: motioned to him and asked him to inform his mistress
18:15
Speaker 1: that a young Brahman would wish to talk to her.
18:19
Speaker 1: After a while, the servant returned, asked him who had
18:23
Speaker 1: been waiting to follow him, conducted him who was following
18:28
Speaker 1: him without a word into a pavilion where Kamala was
18:32
Speaker 1: lying on a couch and left him alone with her.
18:37
Speaker 1: Weren't you already standing out there yesterday greeting me, asked Kamala.
18:44
Speaker 1: It's true that I've already seen and greeted you yesterday.
18:49
Speaker 1: And didn't you yesterday wear a beard and long hair
18:53
Speaker 1: and dust in your hair? You have observed, well, you
18:57
Speaker 1: have seen everything. You have seen Siddhartha, the son of
19:02
Speaker 1: a Brahman who has left his home to become a samana,
19:06
Speaker 1: and who has been a samana for three years. But
19:11
Speaker 1: now I have left that path and came into this city.
19:15
Speaker 1: And the first one I met, even before I had
19:18
Speaker 1: entered the city, was you to say this. I have
19:23
Speaker 1: come to you, o, Kamala. You are the first woman
19:27
Speaker 1: whom Sadartha is not addressing with his eyes turned to
19:30
Speaker 1: the ground. Never again, I want to turn my eyes
19:35
Speaker 1: to the ground when I am coming across a beautiful woman.
19:39
Speaker 1: Kamala smiled and played with her fan of peacock's feathers
19:44
Speaker 1: and asked, and only to tell me this. Saddartha has
19:48
Speaker 1: come to me to tell you this and to thank
19:53
Speaker 1: you for being so beautiful, and if it doesn't displease you, Kamala,
19:58
Speaker 1: I would like to ask you to be my friend
20:00
Speaker 1: and teacher, for I know nothing yet of that art
20:04
Speaker 1: which you have mastered in the highest degree. At this,
20:09
Speaker 1: Kamala laughed aloud. Never before this has happened to me,
20:14
Speaker 1: my friend, that a samana from the forest came to
20:18
Speaker 1: me and wanted to learn from me. Never before this
20:23
Speaker 1: has happened to me, that a samana came to me
20:26
Speaker 1: with long hair and an old torn loincloth. Many young
20:31
Speaker 1: men come to me, and there are also sons of
20:35
Speaker 1: Brahmins among them. But they come in beautiful clothes, They
20:39
Speaker 1: come in fine shoes, they have perfume in their hair,
20:43
Speaker 1: and money in their pouches. This is o samana. How
20:49
Speaker 1: the young men are like who come to me, quoth Siddhartha.
20:55
Speaker 1: Already I am starting to learn from you. Even yesterday
21:00
Speaker 1: I was already learning. I have already taken off my beard,
21:04
Speaker 1: have combed to the hair, have oil in my hair.
21:08
Speaker 1: There is little which is still missing in me. Oh,
21:11
Speaker 1: excellent one, fine clothes, fine shoes, money in my pouch.
21:18
Speaker 1: You shall know. Sir Dartha has set harder goals for
21:21
Speaker 1: himself than such trifles, and he has reached them. How
21:25
Speaker 1: shouldn't I reach that goal which I have set for
21:28
Speaker 1: myself yesterday, to be your friend and to learn the
21:33
Speaker 1: joys of love from you. You'll see that I'll learn quickly, Kamala.
21:38
Speaker 1: I have already learned harder things than what you're supposed
21:42
Speaker 1: to teach me. And now let's get to it. You
21:46
Speaker 1: aren't satisfied with Sir Dartha as he is with oil
21:49
Speaker 1: in his hair, but without clothes, without shoes, without money. Laughing,
21:55
Speaker 1: Kamala exclaimed, no, my dear, he doesn't satisfy me yet.
22:02
Speaker 1: Clothes are what he must have, pretty clothes and shoes,
22:06
Speaker 1: pretty shoes, and lots of money in his pouch and
22:10
Speaker 1: gifts for Kamala. Do you know it now? Samana from
22:14
Speaker 1: the forest, do you mark my words? Yes? I have
22:19
Speaker 1: marked your words, said Arthur exclaimed. How should I not
22:24
Speaker 1: mark words which are coming from such a mouth. Your
22:28
Speaker 1: mouth is like a freshly cracked fig. Kamala, My mouth
22:33
Speaker 1: is red and fresh as well. It will be a
22:36
Speaker 1: suitable match for yours, you'll see. But tell me, beautiful Kamala,
22:41
Speaker 1: aren't you at all afraid of the Somana from the
22:43
Speaker 1: forest who has come to learn how to make love?
22:48
Speaker 1: Whatever should I be afraid of a Somana, a stupid
22:52
Speaker 1: Somana from the forest, who is coming from the jackals
22:56
Speaker 1: and doesn't even know yet what women are. Oh, he's strong,
23:01
Speaker 1: the Somana, and he isn't afraid of anything. He could
23:04
Speaker 1: force you, beautiful girl, He could kidnap you, he could
23:08
Speaker 1: hurt you. No, Somana, I am not afraid of this.
23:14
Speaker 1: Did any Somana or Brahman ever fear someone might come
23:18
Speaker 1: and grab him and steal his learning and his religious
23:22
Speaker 1: devotion and his depth of thought? No, for they are
23:26
Speaker 1: his very own, and he would only give away from
23:29
Speaker 1: those whatever he is willing to give, and to whom
23:32
Speaker 1: ever he is willing to give. Like this, it is
23:36
Speaker 1: precisely like this. It is also with Kamala and with
23:41
Speaker 1: the pleasures of love. Beautiful and red is Kamala's mouth.
23:47
Speaker 1: But just try to kiss it against Kamala's will, and
23:50
Speaker 1: you will not obtain a single drop of sweetness from it,
23:55
Speaker 1: which knows how to give so many sweet things. You
23:59
Speaker 1: are learning easily, said Arthur. Thus you should also learn
24:03
Speaker 1: this love can be obtained by begging, buying, receiving it
24:09
Speaker 1: as a gift finding it in the street. But it
24:13
Speaker 1: cannot be stolen. In this you have come up with
24:16
Speaker 1: the wrong path. No, it would be a pity if
24:20
Speaker 1: a pretty young man like you would want to tackle
24:23
Speaker 1: it in such a wrong manner, Sir d Arthur bowed
24:27
Speaker 1: with a smile. It would be a pity. Kamala, You
24:31
Speaker 1: are so right, it would be such a great pity. No,
24:36
Speaker 1: I shall not lose a single drop of sweetness from
24:39
Speaker 1: your mouth, nor you from mine. So it is settled.
24:44
Speaker 1: Sid Darthur will return once he has what he still
24:48
Speaker 1: lacks clothes, shoes, money. But speak lovely, Kamala. Couldn't you
24:54
Speaker 1: still give me one small advice? An advice? Why not?
25:00
Speaker 1: Who wouldn't like to give an advice to a poor
25:03
Speaker 1: ignorant Samana who is coming from the jackals of the forest.
25:08
Speaker 1: Dear Kamala, thus advise me where I should go, that
25:12
Speaker 1: i'll find these three things most quickly. Friend, many would
25:18
Speaker 1: like to know this. You must do what you've learned
25:22
Speaker 1: and ask for money, clothes, and shoes in return. There
25:27
Speaker 1: is no other way for a poor man to obtain money.
25:30
Speaker 1: What might you be able to do? I can think
25:35
Speaker 1: I can wait, I can fast, nothing else, nothing, but yes,
25:43
Speaker 1: I can also write poetry. Would you like to give
25:46
Speaker 1: me a kiss for a poem? I would like to
25:50
Speaker 1: If I like your poem, what would be its title?
25:55
Speaker 1: Said Arthur spoke, after he had thought about it for
25:58
Speaker 1: a moment. These verses into her shady grove stepped the
26:03
Speaker 1: pretty Kamala. At the grove's entrance stood the brown Samana.
26:09
Speaker 1: Deeply seeing the lotus's blossom, bowed that man, and smiling
26:14
Speaker 1: Kamala thanked. More lovely, thought the young man than offerings
26:19
Speaker 1: for God's more lovely is offering to pretty Kamala. Kamala
26:26
Speaker 1: loudly clapped her hands so that the golden bracelets clanged.
26:31
Speaker 1: Beautiful are your verses, oh brown Somana, I'm losing nothing
26:36
Speaker 1: when I am giving you a kiss for them? She
26:40
Speaker 1: beckoned him with her eyes. He tilted his head so
26:43
Speaker 1: that his face touched hers, and placed his mouth on
26:47
Speaker 1: that mouth, which was like a freshly cracked fig For
26:52
Speaker 1: a long time, Kamala kissed him, and with a deep astonishment,
26:57
Speaker 1: Sir Darthur felt how she taught him, how why she was,
27:01
Speaker 1: how she controlled him, rejected him, lured him, and how
27:07
Speaker 1: after this first one. There was to be a long,
27:11
Speaker 1: a well ordered, well tested sequence of kisses, every one
27:16
Speaker 1: different from the others. He was still to receive. Breathing deeply,
27:22
Speaker 1: he remained standing where he was, and was in this
27:25
Speaker 1: moment astonished like a child about a corner copia of
27:29
Speaker 1: knowledge and things worth learning, which revealed itself before his eyes.
27:36
Speaker 1: Very beautiful are your verses, exclaimed Kamala. If I was rich,
27:41
Speaker 1: I would give you pieces of gold for them, But
27:45
Speaker 1: it will be difficult for you to earn thus much
27:48
Speaker 1: money with verses as you need, for you need a
27:51
Speaker 1: lot of money if you want to be Kamala's friend
27:56
Speaker 1: the way you're able to kiss, Kamala stammered, said Arthur. Yes,
28:02
Speaker 1: this I am able to do. Therefore, I do not
28:05
Speaker 1: like clothes, shoes, bracelets and all beautiful things. But what
28:11
Speaker 1: will become of you? Aren't you able to do anything
28:14
Speaker 1: else but thinking, fasting, making poetry. I also know the
28:20
Speaker 1: sacrificial songs, said said Arthur, but I do not want
28:25
Speaker 1: to sing them anymore. I also know magic spells, but
28:29
Speaker 1: I do not want to speak them anymore. I have
28:32
Speaker 1: read the scriptures. Stop, Kamala interrupted him. You're able to
28:37
Speaker 1: read and write certainly I can do this. Many people
28:42
Speaker 1: can do this. Most people can't. I also can't do it.
28:48
Speaker 1: It is very good that you're able to read and write.
28:51
Speaker 1: Very good. You will also still find use for the
28:55
Speaker 1: magic spells. In this moment, a maid came running in
29:00
Speaker 1: and whispered a message in her mistress's ear. There's a
29:05
Speaker 1: visitor for me, exclaimed Kamala. Hurry and get yourself away,
29:09
Speaker 1: said Arthur. Nobody may see you in here. Remember this
29:14
Speaker 1: tomorrow I'll see you again. But to the maid, she
29:18
Speaker 1: gave the order to give the pious brahm in white
29:21
Speaker 1: upper garments. Without fully understanding what was happening to him,
29:26
Speaker 1: Sir Arthur found himself being dragged away by the maid,
29:30
Speaker 1: brought into a garden house, avoiding the direct path, being
29:34
Speaker 1: given upper garments as a gift, led into the bushes,
29:39
Speaker 1: and urgently admonished to get himself out of the grove
29:43
Speaker 1: as soon as possible without being seen. Contently, he did
29:48
Speaker 1: as he had been told. Being accustomed to the forest,
29:52
Speaker 1: he managed to get out of the grove and over
29:54
Speaker 1: the hedge without making a sound. Contently, he returned to
29:59
Speaker 1: the the city, carrying the rolled up garments under his arm.
30:04
Speaker 1: At the inn where travelers stay. He positioned himself by
30:08
Speaker 1: the door. Without words, he asked for food without a word.
30:14
Speaker 1: He accepted a piece of rice cake. Perhaps as soon
30:18
Speaker 1: as tomorrow, he thought, I will ask no one for
30:21
Speaker 1: food anymore. Suddenly pride flared up in him. He was
30:28
Speaker 1: a Samana no more. It was no longer becoming to
30:32
Speaker 1: him to beg He gave the rice cake to a
30:36
Speaker 1: dog and remained without food. Simple is the life which
30:42
Speaker 1: people lead in this world here, thought said Arthur. It
30:46
Speaker 1: presents no difficulties. Everything was difficult, toilsome and ultimately hopeless
30:54
Speaker 1: when I was still a Samana. Now everything is easy, easy,
30:59
Speaker 1: like that lessons in kissing which Kamala is giving me.
31:04
Speaker 1: I need clothes and money, nothing else. This is a
31:08
Speaker 1: small near goal. They won't make a person lose any sleep.
31:14
Speaker 1: He had already discovered Kamala's house in the city long
31:17
Speaker 1: before there. He turned up the following day. Things are
31:22
Speaker 1: working out well, she called out to him. They are
31:26
Speaker 1: expecting you at Kamaswami's. He is the richest merchant of
31:30
Speaker 1: the city. If he'll like you, he'll accept you into
31:34
Speaker 1: his service. Be smart, brown, Samana. I had others tell
31:39
Speaker 1: him about you. Be polite towards him. He is very powerful,
31:45
Speaker 1: but don't be too modest. I do not want you
31:48
Speaker 1: to become his servant. You shall become his equal, or
31:52
Speaker 1: else I won't be satisfied with you. Kamaswami is starting
31:57
Speaker 1: to get old and lazy. If you'll like you, he'll
32:01
Speaker 1: entrust you with a lot. Sir Arthur thanked her and laughed,
32:07
Speaker 1: and when she found out that he had not eaten
32:09
Speaker 1: anything yesterday and to day, she sent for bread and
32:12
Speaker 1: fruits and treated him to it. You've been lucky, she said,
32:18
Speaker 1: when they parted. I'm opening one door after another for you.
32:22
Speaker 1: How come do you have a spell? Said Arthur said,
32:28
Speaker 1: yesterday I told you I knew how to think, to wait,
32:32
Speaker 1: and to fast, and you thought this was of no use,
32:37
Speaker 1: But it is useful for many things. Kamala, You'll see.
32:42
Speaker 1: You'll see that the stupid Somanas are learning and able
32:46
Speaker 1: to do many pretty things in the forest, which the
32:50
Speaker 1: likes of you aren't capable of. The day before yesterday,
32:55
Speaker 1: I was still a shaggy beggar. As soon as yesterday
32:58
Speaker 1: I have kissed Kamala, and soon I'll be a merchant
33:02
Speaker 1: and have money and all those things you insist upon. Well, yes,
33:09
Speaker 1: she admitted, But where would you be without me? What
33:13
Speaker 1: would you be if Kamala wasn't helping you? Dear Kamala,
33:19
Speaker 1: said Sai Darthur and straightened up to his full height.
33:22
Speaker 1: When I came to you in your grove, I did
33:26
Speaker 1: the first step. It was my resolution to learn love
33:30
Speaker 1: from this most beautiful woman. From that moment on, when
33:34
Speaker 1: I made this resolution, I also knew that I would
33:38
Speaker 1: carry it out. I knew that you would help me
33:42
Speaker 1: At your first glance at the entrance to the grove,
33:45
Speaker 1: I already knew it. But what if I hadn't been
33:50
Speaker 1: willing you were willing? Look, Kamala, when you throw a
33:56
Speaker 1: rock into the water, it will speed on the fast
34:00
Speaker 1: discourse to the bottom of the water. This is how
34:04
Speaker 1: it is when Sadartha has a goal, a resolution. Sadartha
34:09
Speaker 1: does nothing. He waits, he thinks, he fasts, but he
34:15
Speaker 1: passes through the things of the world like a rock
34:18
Speaker 1: through water, without doing anything, without stirring. He is drawn.
34:26
Speaker 1: He lets himself fall. His goal attracts him because he
34:32
Speaker 1: doesn't let anything enter his soul which might oppose the goal.
34:37
Speaker 1: This is what Sadartha has learned among the Samanas. This
34:42
Speaker 1: is what fools call magic, and of which they think
34:45
Speaker 1: it would be affected by means of the demons. Nothing
34:49
Speaker 1: is affected by demons. There are no demons. Everyone can
34:55
Speaker 1: perform magic. Everyone can reach his goals if he is
35:00
Speaker 1: able to think, if he is able to wait, if
35:05
Speaker 1: he is able too fast. Gamala listened to him. She
35:10
Speaker 1: loved his voice, she loved the look of his eyes.
35:15
Speaker 1: Perhaps it is so, she said, quietly, as you say, friend.
35:21
Speaker 1: But perhaps it is also like this, that Siddartha is
35:25
Speaker 1: a handsome man, that his glance pleases the women, and
35:30
Speaker 1: that therefore good fortune is coming towards him. With one kiss,
35:35
Speaker 1: Siddartha bid his farewell. I wish that it should be
35:40
Speaker 1: this way, my teacher, that my glance shall please you,
35:44
Speaker 1: that always good fortune shall come to me out of
35:48
Speaker 1: your direction. End of Chapter five
