- 0:00We got my guy Towson on the pod. What's up buddy?
- 0:03Dude, so you are AUS army shooter?
- 0:09Tell me about that dude. I, I took a big hiatus from
- 0:12shooting for about 7-8 years. I used to shoot quite a bit and
- 0:16compete and then I took like an 8 year break and the Army team,
- 0:19I was just sitting on my computer one day and I just sent
- 0:21out an e-mail and it was like an all call e-mail and they're like
- 0:24audition for the Army team. And I was like, well, we'll give
- 0:27her hell and ended up making it. So there's currently four of us
- 0:30on the team out of everybody in the Army.
- 0:33So yeah, it was exciting, got picked up and now I get to go
- 0:36travel and shoot and have the Army pay for it.
- 0:38So it's great, yeah. That sounds like a dream, no?
- 0:41Exactly. So yeah.
- 0:42So how many events do you get to do like annually on that
- 0:47program? So this is my first year, I've
- 0:48done NFA national so far. Vegas is my second shoot.
- 0:52Hopefully we're going to get down, do a couple of essays and
- 0:55probably the one in Can't Mendon in Louisiana, and then we'll
- 0:59probably do the one in Kentucky too.
- 1:00So probably get at least three or four.
- 1:02I am doing the bow hunter shoot in August at the ASA so that's
- 1:07hence the reason of shooting all bow hunter setup for everything
- 1:09this year. So I plan to see you at that
- 1:11one. I'm excited for that.
- 1:12Like I think for the sport as a whole, that's a really good idea
- 1:17for an event because it's an approachable thing that anyone
- 1:21can throw their hat in the ring. You don't have to have a $5000
- 1:24target rig. Like dude, target bows are
- 1:26expensive. When I when I started to price
- 1:28out my bow, I'm like this sucker is expensive.
- 1:31So like, you could go with a bear Alaskan XD and give
- 1:35yourself a shot, you know what I mean?
- 1:37No. Well, and that's, I mean, that's
- 1:38why everybody's got to eventually migrate that way,
- 1:40because target bows don't sell boats, right.
- 1:43So for a boat on EU industry, yeah, we don't, we don't sell
- 1:46bows here. Everybody buys a hunting boat
- 1:47and 90% of your people out there can't afford to buy a 2 or $3000
- 1:51hunting boat and then go buy a five $6000 target rig, full rig
- 1:55and rig it out and then travel and compete and stuff like that.
- 1:58So I think I think it's huge. I think them going to a all
- 2:01hunting setup is going to, I mean, it's going to open doors
- 2:04because like as a consumer, if you're sitting there watching a
- 2:07guy pound A330X with a target bow, you're like, cool, he's got
- 2:10the target, the lens, the sight, everything.
- 2:13But you watch a guy go do it with an arc 34, you know, or a
- 2:16bow tech proven 34, whatever, you know what I mean?
- 2:18Like you're also like, oh, wow, that bow shoots really good.
- 2:21Like I'm going to look at buying that.
- 2:22So it's just going to do nothing but sell way more bows for
- 2:27actual hunting companies I think.
- 2:28It's going to blow the that shoot, that one that's happening
- 2:31in August is going to blow the industry's mind as far as like
- 2:36how? Because like you said, the
- 2:38majority of bows sold are hunting bows.
- 2:41So if a hunter then can walk in with their hunting rig, they
- 2:45don't got to go buy another one and can come when becoming a pro
- 2:48in that category $10,000 in the weekend.
- 2:51You know how many people are going to start flocking to ASA
- 2:54shoot with their hunting? Rig.
- 2:57That's contributing money to the archery industry.
- 2:59That means more bows are going to sell because more people want
- 3:02to enter the sport with their hunting rig to make money on
- 3:04that weekend and try and win. I think it's going to be mind
- 3:07blowing to them to see what it does.
- 3:08Well, not known 45 class, the bow hunter class is it's already
- 3:12growing and getting bigger. And I know there's been talks of
- 3:14it, but they're talking about doing a pro bow hunter class.
- 3:17And it's like they get to that point in the ASA and you have
- 3:20have like the open pro shoot down and then you have the bow
- 3:22hunter shoot down and they like film and like broadcast that
- 3:25live. I mean, the bow cells are going
- 3:27to go through the roof. Like that's where they'll sell
- 3:29their bows. Dude, for sure.
- 3:31And it's, you know, I think archeries is like actually a
- 3:34pretty good spot right now. I mean, if you just think about
- 3:37stuff like how big this Vegas shoot is, how big all the tacks
- 3:40are, how big boat disciples challenge is, how big this ASA
- 3:45is going to be like, and how many people are making really
- 3:48good content about archery that is bringing in outsiders.
- 3:52Like that's why it's so cool to see so many people that we know
- 3:55and just watch their ascension as far as like viewership and
- 3:58and growing and growing and growing.
- 4:00And that's good because the more creators there are and the more
- 4:03of them that get bigger and reach out of the niche and pull
- 4:07people in, all that's going to do is help our sport.
- 4:09And you know, I know you're like me and you're a big, big hunter
- 4:12just like I am. I've always said I think it's so
- 4:15important to get more and more hunters at least into the sport.
- 4:19I know it sucks we're going to draw less tags and stuff.
- 4:21But dude, you look at all these states that are actively trying
- 4:24to ban hunting. The only way we're going to have
- 4:27a fight is if we have more people to sign that value.
- 4:29You look at Colorado, Colorado's try to get rid of everything and
- 4:32they just passed the one for fur trading where they're
- 4:34essentially going to ban trapping in Colorado.
- 4:36So it's, yeah, it's always an an endangered sport where people
- 4:40are always trying to get rid of it.
- 4:41Activists don't understand that like, hunters contribute more to
- 4:45hunt or to animal and taking care of wildlife and taking care
- 4:49of, you know, national parks and any other organization in the
- 4:52world, they contribute way more every single year.
- 4:55And so if hunters go away, national parks go away, animals
- 4:58go away, we don't have the ability to, you know, provide
- 5:00funding for science or anything like that.
- 5:02And all of a sudden birds and everything are done.
- 5:04So hundreds of the number one contributors in the.
- 5:06Tax dollars that are paying for the conservation, like I don't
- 5:10think people even understand that our our tag money that we
- 5:13pay for our tag, our license, all of that goes directly to
- 5:18that conservation. Hello.
- 5:20Hello. We have a guest on the pod,
- 5:24Nyla. We got Nyla.
- 5:26On a live. Pod Nyla coming in as a guest.
- 5:30I love it dude, I'll come talk to you in a bit.
- 5:33First time I've actually even met her in person.
- 5:35Yeah, we have. This is so fun.
- 5:38Right now. Dude see This is why I like
- 5:41doing pods in this environment because personally I like to
- 5:46having people around having a vibe dude it.
- 5:48Was just like when we were shooting just Barry.
- 5:50I mean, you got Joel, you got Greg coming up all everybody
- 5:53coming up and talking and how. Yeah, it's fun.
- 5:56So dude, what's up? Back on the hunting topic a
- 5:59little bit is like my favorite animal to hunt has always been
- 6:03and I think it's what I'm best at doing is spot and stock mule
- 6:07deer hunting. That's what my bread and butter
- 6:09and especially in the desert is my favorite.
- 6:12What's your favorite animal to hunt and your favorite style to
- 6:14hunt? Mule deer spawn stock, hands
- 6:16down has always been my favorite.
- 6:18I I I'm fortunate to grow up in Wyoming where we have a
- 6:22phenomenal mule deer herd, Giants.
- 6:25So I've shot a lot of deer in Wyoming, Idaho, a few in Utah
- 6:28too as well. You know a lot about Wyoming.
- 6:31I'm going to guess something. You know a lot about Prong.
- 6:34Oh yeah, yeah. There you go, that's.
- 6:36That's my SO if you want to talk about the most fun you'll ever
- 6:40have, bow hunting, animal hunting, is it right?
- 6:43So antelope don't wake up early in the morning, like they're not
- 6:47out late at night. You can hunt animals all day
- 6:51long, right? And so the best part about
- 6:52antelope is, is like you'll go blow a stock and like mule deer
- 6:55hunting, it's like you blow a stock on your target buck and
- 6:58he's gone. He's going to timber up and like
- 6:59you won't see him till rifle season.
- 7:01You know what I mean? Like so it's it's like
- 7:03devastating. You blow a stock on your target,
- 7:06mule deer, Longhorn, it's like, oh, I blew that stock.
- 7:08Cool. There's another herd of 40 of
- 7:10them over there. Let's go try for that one.
- 7:12And that one doesn't work. You do like 7080 stocks in a
- 7:15weekend and like, and, and the one that usually works out is
- 7:19where you just like, walk up to the herd near 40 yards and they
- 7:21stand there and look at you and you're like, just dump them.
- 7:24Yeah, but dude, that's all. It's like, it's a riot.
- 7:26It's There's nothing more fun than chasing speed goats for the
- 7:28bow. And dude, that's such good reps
- 7:30too. Like if you're trying to work on
- 7:31your spot and stock hunting skills, because stalking is a
- 7:34skill, it's got to be 100%. And that actually sounds a lot
- 7:38like when I went bow hunting in South Africa, dude, It's the
- 7:41same thing. Like, you know, being mule deer
- 7:43guys. I'm used to glass in the desert
- 7:45for two weeks before I do 1 stalk and it's like, I need to
- 7:48make it happen out there, bro. We're doing like 3 or 4 stalks a
- 7:51day and like that's so many reps, so much practice.
- 7:55Like and it sounds like pronghorn is sort of like.
- 7:57That, you know, it's, it does wonders for your deer hunting
- 8:00and everything like that. Yeah, I went, I went to sniper
- 8:03school and when I got to sniper school, we got to the stocking
- 8:05portion and they're like, you got to get within 300 meters of
- 8:07the truck. I was like, I'm at least to
- 8:12sneak it up to 20. This is going to be great.
- 8:15It was cakewalk. So yeah, no, it it helps out
- 8:17substantially with you and two, probably my next favorite
- 8:22animal, the hunts elk, right? Like I've haunted a lot of elk
- 8:24in my life and and I've gotten to the point where I rarely call
- 8:27anymore. Everything's spot in stock.
- 8:29Like you get in a big bowl that gets into a herd with cows and
- 8:31stuff like it's game over. You blow a bugle and they turn
- 8:34around, they run the other direction.
- 8:36And so I've the past, I don't know, probably 8 or 9 elk I've
- 8:39shot have all been spot stock like it's been since I think the
- 8:43last big bull I called in was like 2016.
- 8:46Otherwise I've killed all my elk spot and stock and I usually
- 8:49shoot 2 bulls a year so. Yeah dude I'm the exact same
- 8:52way. I don't hunt elk as much as you
- 8:54just because like the states that are near me are tough to
- 8:56draw. I've shot 6 bulls with my bow,
- 8:59but I'm the same as you. Like I, I much preferred, I call
- 9:03it bubble hunt them like just like find the cows, find the
- 9:06bowl and I just spend all day just like, and eventually dude,
- 9:10it works out. But you got to put yourself in
- 9:13there for a long period of time and be ready to travel.
- 9:15Dude. I've gone like 8 miles with the
- 9:17herd before, you know, And that's the, that's what I love
- 9:21about elk hunting is it is so much different.
- 9:24Like it's so much different than deer honey.
- 9:26It's a completely different ball game.
- 9:28Like you can get seen by cows and they'll look at you like
- 9:31it's not moving anymore, cool and go back to feed and like
- 9:33they don't bump nearly as hard or as easily as deer like cows
- 9:37when you get in a herd scenario. And it's fun too, right?
- 9:39Like you get to hear them talk, You get to hear them
- 9:41communicate, like, and they start chirping and going nuts
- 9:43and the bulls start screaming like that's the IT gets you
- 9:46amped up. Never heard in my whole life.
- 9:49So like I had never been from the East Coast.
- 9:52Like 1 elk was just kind of. Yeah, non existent.
- 9:55And then you come out to the West and yeah, it started mute
- 9:58deer hunting with him. That was one thing.
- 10:00And then so I finally put in for elk and drew a cow tag in
- 10:04Arizona and we go out and granting I did, I did a lot of
- 10:09stocks. I did more stocks than I thought
- 10:11I was going to do. And just my height, it didn't
- 10:14play to my advantage in the area we were in.
- 10:16There's a lot of brushy low stuff that really made it.
- 10:20It's. Tough Gosh, it was so
- 10:21frustrating. We'd like follow a herd and
- 10:24follow a herd and like I'm like, I what you never I've never hung
- 10:28out with an animal this close for this long and that many of
- 10:30them and then all of a sudden like it just blows up because of
- 10:34whatever and there's just literally zero shot opportunity.
- 10:39But so then we switched to water and holy, I there's a point in
- 10:44the video where I'm shaking so bad because I've never heard
- 10:48these sounds. I didn't know they made the
- 10:51sounds that they make because you always just fear the typical
- 10:53view. It's like now there is so much
- 10:56more going on that once there that sub 100 and you start
- 11:00hearing it. I'm like, he's howling at me.
- 11:02Why the fuck is this? I'm just about to pee myself
- 11:06like at the sounds they're making.
- 11:08And then they just come running in like a stamp.
- 11:11And James told me beforehand, like he warned, this is not a
- 11:14timid deer, like come into the water like they're.
- 11:17Going to Sprint and jump in the. Middle like a friggin herd a
- 11:22horses just straight to the water and it was no joke.
- 11:26That is exactly what they do. The bull ran them straight in
- 11:30and they just run straight into the water like a Stampede and I
- 11:33was just pissing myself at the time like I it was just bad.
- 11:37All common sense went out the freaking window.
- 11:40Like I drew my bow while one was 8 yards away from me staring at
- 11:44me because I had no concept of what was going on anymore.
- 11:47Blew that one up and then I think the next day or two days
- 11:50later I shot it on the same water hole.
- 11:52But it's like elk or just this. There are different beasts
- 11:55there. They're so much fun.
- 11:57I love I love mule deer because the technical side of it right,
- 12:01like I'm I'm hunting. I've never done I've done desert
- 12:04one time in Arizona, but like for me it's always high country,
- 12:07like 12,010 thousand feet elevation in the cliffs and
- 12:10everything is so super technical and you feel like a ninja when
- 12:14you finally get it done. It's so tough and so hard like,
- 12:18but elk like the thing I love about stock and elk and being an
- 12:21elk is it's it's one I'm way more relaxed, but two yeah, it's
- 12:25it's vocal. They're screaming.
- 12:27I'm I'm I've shot 24 with a bow now.
- 12:30They had 24 bulls and like my so I have more fun calling now for
- 12:35people than anything else. And I'll never forget my little
- 12:38sister, the first time I took her out because she's a big
- 12:40rifle hunter. She's like, I want to shoot one
- 12:42of the balls. Like, all right, let's get it
- 12:43done. So we go out there and I called
- 12:45this bull in to like, I don't know, 15 yards.
- 12:47And he's, we're on the edge of the timber and he's sitting
- 12:50right on the edge of it. You can see his legs and you can
- 12:52see antlers through the trees. But I mean, he is just raking
- 12:55and screaming, going bonkers right in front of us.
- 12:57And he's just held up. He doesn't want to come out and
- 13:00this interaction happens for about, I don't know, a solid 2
- 13:03minutes before he turns and walks away.
- 13:06And at the end of that two minutes, I hear she had held her
- 13:12breath for like 2 minutes. Strange.
- 13:14You can hear the arrow on the rest.
- 13:16But yeah, I've taken full grown dudes out before that are like
- 13:19hard guys, right? And like, you get him out there,
- 13:22get him in front of an elk and they just, they get to shake
- 13:24him. I can't control themselves.
- 13:27You don't even know it because all you never get close enough
- 13:31half the time to actually hear those sounds.
- 13:35You hear them from you don't realize how far away that sound
- 13:38actually is. And then when you do hear them,
- 13:40like they did not sound like pleasant.
- 13:43Animals You get a big growler in the timber coming through you
- 13:47just just screech it at you the. Devil is coming at you.
- 13:51It is not nice to. Hear we call the bull last year
- 13:54Satan, because that's what he sounded like, yeah, just he had
- 13:57no top end, just all bottom. Yeah.
- 14:00Coming to a timber. Dude, Elkhart, they're so
- 14:03they're, they're awesome, dude. Like I wish maybe dope to get A
- 14:06tag every year. I mean I have done so I did.
- 14:10I've I've haunted over the counter out three times.
- 14:12I did Utah in 1921 and or 22 and 23 and I got a bowl each time A6
- 14:18by 65 by 6 and a 5 by 5. But other than that I've only
- 14:21haunted Arizona a couple times and New Mexico 1.
- 14:25So I've only, I think I've had an elk tag seven times and I've
- 14:31shot 6. That's impressive.
- 14:33So the only time I didn't shoot 1 was a late season hunt.
- 14:36No, I take it back to two times I didn't shoot one.
- 14:39One was a late hunt in November. And dude, at the time in 2012,
- 14:44my shoulder was so blown out, my health was so bad that I shot at
- 14:48one easy shot and I hit him through the top of the back.
- 14:51And so I should have, should have shot 1.
- 14:54My health was just trashed. And then the other one was an
- 14:57over the counter back when it was in Montana.
- 14:59And dude, it was brutal. The toughest I've ever worked on
- 15:03a hunt. I don't even think I drew the
- 15:04bow once. And I mean, we were grinding for
- 15:07two weeks straight, you know, So I'm, I am proud of that.
- 15:11Like having 6 for 8:00. Though no, that's huge.
- 15:14Like that's the biggest thing with elk hunting is you have to
- 15:16have time in order for you to kill a bull with a bow.
- 15:19Everything has to come together perfectly for sure.
- 15:21It really does. This year was the toughest year
- 15:23for me. It was hot like 85° like I spent
- 15:26almost of elk season in short shorts and no shirt on at camp.
- 15:30I shoot my boat like it was so odd but like I started hunting
- 15:35because I had an Idaho tag and Idaho opens up in August.
- 15:38I started hunting like August 31st.
- 15:41I didn't kill my Idaho bull until like the 14th of August.
- 15:44I only haunted Idaho for two days so I got lucky in Idaho but
- 15:47I haunted from August 31st essentially and I end up killing
- 15:50my Wyoming bull September 27th. Like it took me day near the
- 15:55whole month and I drew back on a bull almost every day of
- 15:58September. Like I was in them every single
- 16:01day and it just the stars never aligned until the last day.
- 16:03I took my nephew out trying to get him a bull and his bull
- 16:06steps out at 70 and I passed like 15 bulls that size already
- 16:10in the season. I mean, I'm like, I'm sorry,
- 16:12bud, we can't get any closer. We're standing on a four Wheeler
- 16:14trail. Like we can't get any closer,
- 16:16bud. And he's like, it's all right.
- 16:17He's like, but you should shoot it.
- 16:18And I'm like Nah. And he's like please.
- 16:21I'm like OK, because he's never seen it to get shot by a bow.
- 16:24So this bull steps out 78 just fricking you just smokes it and
- 16:30my nephews like Oh my gosh I did.
- 16:33This is so cool. Dude, that's actually you opened
- 16:37up a good can of worms. There is the shot distance
- 16:40debate and my perspective is that everyone's talent is
- 16:45different. So like for some people you may
- 16:48only be effectively able to shoot to 20 yards or maybe for
- 16:51some people it's 55. And but some guys I think can
- 16:54ethically shoot 100 and pound a spot every time.
- 16:57But it's like you have to know your limitations and just stick
- 17:01to that. Well, not just your limitations
- 17:03as a shooter, your limitations as far as your equipment goes.
- 17:06Because I may be able to go out and shoot a paper plate at 70
- 17:11yards, but my bow is a lot slower than his bow and it's
- 17:16making sound and the arrows getting seen.
- 17:19Like there's so much more ethically reaction time that
- 17:23that animal can have from the time my arrow takes to get there
- 17:26from his arrow to get at the same distance.
- 17:28So like, is it ethical for me to shoot at 70?
- 17:31Probably not. Where's him?
- 17:33It's a no brainer. It's so I've always told people
- 17:37because I have shot some animals at some distances, right, like I
- 17:41I used to, I used to practice. I still do.
- 17:44I bet you I shoot at least I right now is probably the least
- 17:47I've ever shot and I'm shooting 120 arrows a day.
- 17:50But I used to be to the point where I was shooting 23400
- 17:52arrows a day all day. I was lucky and had 100 yard
- 17:55range Outback where I could go shoot and I could shoot 100
- 17:58every single day. And I used to just sit there and
- 18:00shoot and shoot and shoot. So for elk and last year was the
- 18:03first year I ever took a shot like I'd shot up to that .20
- 18:07something bulls. I'd shot 30 yards and under.
- 18:09Yeah, because elk are big critters and I and I'm not the
- 18:12person that shoots once and I'm like, Oh yeah, I hit them good.
- 18:15Like I shoot once and it's like there's rapid reason.
- 18:17Yeah, I am sending it every porcupine and elk.
- 18:21Everyone I know who is a good hunter does the same thing.
- 18:25I do the same thing. I don't care.
- 18:26I can hit something absolutely piped in the 12 but if he goes
- 18:29in the stands off I'm going to shoot him again. 100% My dad
- 18:32taught me that since I was a little.
- 18:34Kid and when you when you get one in them, it's like that goes
- 18:37out the window, right like at that point.
- 18:38Yeah, you should. I think it's like.
- 18:40I'm going to put as many holes in this thing as physically
- 18:43possible. So yeah, I have had, I had one
- 18:44follow up shot on an elk that was like 130 and I freaking
- 18:47smoked them again. But like, I don't care.
- 18:50Like when it gets to that point, I've already shot him good one
- 18:52time. I'm going to put as many holes
- 18:54in them as like 100%. I watched the dude, I helped a
- 18:56guy in Idaho one time and he shot this elk right behind the
- 18:59shoulder about where you'd think you want to put it right.
- 19:01Shoots this elk and I'm like, put another one in them, put
- 19:04another one in them. He's like, he's pumped, He's
- 19:06down, he's down. And I'm like, put another arrow
- 19:08in them. And I kid you not, this elk
- 19:09stands on all fours like this and goes and coughs out like one
- 19:13lung, like massive blood clot, like lung material, everything.
- 19:18And the elk gets up and runs and we never found him.
- 19:21And it was money. I mean right behind the tree
- 19:24center. Mask.
- 19:25Why not? But he only got 1 lung and elk
- 19:27can live on one lung for forever.
- 19:29And so, yeah, it's I always put a bunch of arrows in them if I
- 19:32if I can. But yeah, it's, it's all
- 19:35depending on it depends on the situation, right, Wendy?
- 19:38Stuff like that. Because especially on an elk,
- 19:40like you hit an elk bad, like they're gone, see you.
- 19:42Bye. Good luck finding them.
- 19:44I did, I have AI have I have a it's on video.
- 19:47I I'm sitting a tree stand. I think also a very good way to
- 19:51hunt elk. I'm sitting a tree stand in a
- 19:53very low density area. I just like you said, about the
- 19:56time I had sat, I had haunted, I think 18 straight days or
- 20:01something and I hadn't even seen an elk and it was a second to
- 20:04last day. But I'm like, I'm committed to
- 20:05this tree. I'm just sitting at I'm, you
- 20:08know, mentally you're like, whatever, I'm just, I'm just
- 20:10burning. I'm waiting for the season to
- 20:12end at this point. Freaking out the bushes, dude,
- 20:15comes two nice bowls walking right to it and I'm like, holy.
- 20:20Shit, this guy's not out there. I can't.
- 20:21Believe there's an elk in front of me and I draw back 18 yards,
- 20:25dude. And I mean when you watch the
- 20:27video, you'd be like you cannot place the arrow better in them.
- 20:30Like it perfect. That elk probably went 3/4 of a
- 20:36mile, you know? And it was because when I really
- 20:38assessed it, there's there's such big animals that what
- 20:42happened was I shot him when his arm was like maybe not back, but
- 20:44it was like mid and I hit him like right in the crease, but
- 20:47the crease was like mid rib cage because his arm was sort of
- 20:51back. And but to your point, he he of
- 20:55course, just ran no chance. But that is right there is why
- 20:58if you can always shoot. Another shot in no matter how
- 21:02good it looks, yeah, no, it's it's always put arrows in them.
- 21:05And I tell people that with rifles even, because I've
- 21:07watched an elk soak up a 300 win mag when they hit him shoulder
- 21:09bone and elk absorbed it and kept going like, yeah, you can
- 21:14get a, you can get another shot in and put it in them.
- 21:16That is a pro tip. Yeah, that is a pro tip,
- 21:18Antelope. Now, on the other hand.
- 21:19When you shoot a speed go, they're like you shoot them once
- 21:22and they're like, ow, I'm hurt and they just lay down and
- 21:24they're like just shoot me like, yeah, they're not.
- 21:26They're not tough. Super tough dude.
- 21:28Everything I'm hearing just sounds like.
- 21:30An antelope is. You need to start.
- 21:32You need to start buying Wyoming points.
- 21:34I got an area in Wyoming where you can draw it with three
- 21:36points. So there you go.
- 21:38And yeah, it's, it's pretty easy to do.
- 21:40And we'll go out and we'll just have the time of your life.
- 21:43Let's do it. Let's do a group.
- 21:44We'll just chase them out in the desert and it's a.
- 21:46Riot, let's do it. I just, and the one thing I've
- 21:49always, I keep saying, which is it's tough.
- 21:52I've always heard that like they are the fastest reacting
- 21:56antlers. I've always been extraordinarily
- 21:58nervous that it's going to be the one that's the toughest for
- 22:01me to successfully get because I don't want my first antelope to
- 22:07be over water in a blind. And it's not that I'm against
- 22:10doing that because I did it with my help.
- 22:12I'm I'm fine with it, but there's just something about
- 22:14spot and spot and I'm like. It's so much more rewarding.
- 22:17Spot and stuff with my bow on the antelope and I'm like
- 22:22probably, you know pushing that like it's going to take me 4 or
- 22:25five years of actually getting one but.
- 22:27But. I I don't know what it is about
- 22:30like antelope and people have like run and gun to get them.
- 22:33It's like the best mixture of like fun and chaotic, along with
- 22:37still like on stock and skill. Like I said, it times deer can
- 22:41get a little like serious and I get a little antsy.
- 22:44Oh. I'm very serious when it comes
- 22:46to. I'm a different animal.
- 22:49My 1 buddy my. Friends hate me, yeah.
- 22:51I'll read too. I got 1 buddy that hunts with
- 22:53me. He he hunts pretty religiously
- 22:55with me. He never killed anything.
- 22:56And he was like, and I was when I first got to the infantry
- 22:59company and he was like, hey man, I heard you hunt a lot.
- 23:01He's like, I've never killed an elk before.
- 23:03He's like, do you think you could help me?
- 23:05And I was like, you come out, you give me 4 days, we'll get
- 23:07you a bull. And he was like, really?
- 23:08I was like, yeah. And he's the only person in the
- 23:10guard like that's ever taken me up on it, right.
- 23:12So he comes out and he's like, he's serious.
- 23:15But he's like, hey, I'm coming. I'm like, cool, we killed one in
- 23:17like literally 9 hours of hunting.
- 23:19He had his first bull on the ground with above, like, you
- 23:21know, just like, and since then he was like, I want to go to
- 23:23archery deer hunting with you. I was like, well, I'm a
- 23:26different animal when it comes to deer, just so you know.
- 23:28But yeah, we got done, killed our first deer and then like 2
- 23:30days later he's like, let's go elk hunting.
- 23:31And I was like, yeah, we'll wake up at 9 and he's like, you're
- 23:34just a different person when it comes to elk.
- 23:36And I'm like, Oh yeah, 100% yeah.
- 23:38Elks just for fun. Deer's a serious business.
- 23:40Dude for sure and and I have really grown to like Coos, deer
- 23:45hunting. I don't know if you've ever.
- 23:46I've only done it one time, that one time in Arizona, because
- 23:49it's an either or, right? You can shoot either or.
- 23:51We played around with a few small ones.
- 23:53But yeah, I hear people get pretty obsessed with Coos.
- 23:56So I've kind of changed my tune. So like Arizona's my that's my
- 24:00favorite place to hunt. You know, my, that's my bread
- 24:02and butter that New Mexico. But like, I used to go and hunt
- 24:07pretty much exclusively mule deer when I was there.
- 24:09Shot a lot of big ones, right? But then they went to this quota
- 24:12system and the people would, they would fill the quotas on
- 24:16mule deer. But then I would look at it and
- 24:18I would go, nobody hunts the white tails.
- 24:20And there's way more in the quotas.
- 24:22So I started shifting my focus to hunting the Coos deer and
- 24:25they live in way high, like most people aren't hiking up to hunt
- 24:28where they are. And dude, I, I love it, bro.
- 24:32They're almost like hunting an elk because they're so
- 24:34aggressive during the rut, dude, like they are not.
- 24:37They're more aggressive than a mulee by a lot.
- 24:39So they'll be running around chasing each other and like
- 24:42they're just a cool deer, especially when you see one on
- 24:44the ground and how small they are and how but.
- 24:46They're like the size of a German chef, literally like
- 24:48they're, they're just big. Yeah, and, and I mean, I've shot
- 24:52so Pope and Young, 70 inches. I shot a, my first one was 66
- 24:57and then I shot a 87 and then I shot a 93.
- 25:01That's a giant. My last one was a 93.
- 25:03There's a 8 pointer like that's big.
- 25:05And dude, she filmed it for me. It was so cool.
- 25:07Glassed him up on the side of this hill.
- 25:08I just, he was just chasing this buck dude like crazy.
- 25:12And there was a doe. No, he was chasing a buck off.
- 25:15So he's chasing a buck off. Yeah, there he wasn't even that
- 25:17small. So he's chasing this buck around
- 25:19and I'm like, the winds blowing this way.
- 25:21There's a huge hill like this and they're on this face and I'm
- 25:24like, dude, if we get up on that knuckle, they're like trending
- 25:27that way, bro. We get up there, she's huffing
- 25:29and puffing and I see the flicker of a doe run by and I'm
- 25:32like, I see as I see a heat, the big eight point rack come
- 25:37through, dude. And I friggin mean, I mean, I
- 25:39couldn't have humped him better at like 46 bro through this
- 25:42little gap. It was the best bro.
- 25:44And he went down because they live in such steep stuff like
- 25:48I've seen them. We need to go do that one day.
- 25:51I would love to do that. Especially because I know you
- 25:54like. That well, and that's that's my
- 25:56problem is that I have and that's why I've been successful
- 25:58with mule deers. I have this weird fatuation with
- 26:01being super uncomfortable. Like it'll be like this year.
- 26:04We are in this middle of this lightning storm and it's raining
- 26:06like nasty lightning. Like there's a lightning warning
- 26:09and my buddies, my 2 buddies are sitting at the tent and they're
- 26:12like, they're like, man, we we're not going out.
- 26:15And I was like, well, sucks to seven years.
- 26:16I'm going. I'm going out.
- 26:18If I die on the mountain, that's where I'm supposed to die.
- 26:20I'm like, I'm out of here. See you.
- 26:22Bye dude. I think we're the same hunter.
- 26:23I'm learning. I do the same exact thing.
- 26:25I've almost been struck twice, like very very close and it's
- 26:30uncomfortable. For sure, I've had a windstorm
- 26:32with trees falling around me and I had to go find the most open
- 26:35spot I could cause Timbers just crash it all around me and I'm
- 26:38like this is probably really dumb but.
- 26:39I literally was hiking up this hill and all of a sudden I just
- 26:42had this like, Nat, like, natural reaction like this.
- 26:45And I looked to my left in a tree, like a hundred, 150 yards
- 26:49to left. I had just blown up, dude, in
- 26:51the energy. Like, I felt, feel the static.
- 26:53Yeah, I felt it. It was the craziest thing.
- 26:55I dodged a bullet on that one for sure.
- 26:57I actually know a dude. Fun, fun, random story.
- 27:00His name's Randy Spangler. This guy's a mountain bike guy.
- 27:03And he would, he was digging where they do Red Bull Rampage
- 27:06out in Virgin. And yeah, dude, he got struck by
- 27:10lightning twice on the same day. Literally struck.
- 27:12And he lived. He's fine.
- 27:14We had a. Guy we had a guy cutting hay and
- 27:16got hit in the tractor and it knocked him out even inside the
- 27:20tractor, right. And like we, we just saw the,
- 27:22the swather just go and hit the edge of the field, hit the fence
- 27:25and go to the tree line. And we go right out there real
- 27:27quick and we go like pull him out and CPR.
- 27:30He came right back. But like, he had like little
- 27:32lightning veins down his chest and everything like and he was
- 27:34in a tractor when he got here. Oh my God, that lightning is
- 27:39honestly what scares me the most when I'm out hunting is
- 27:42lightning because you just can't control it.
- 27:44I'm going to ZAP you anytime. I'm not going to lie.
- 27:46Hunt in the wilderness. G bear scared me.
- 27:47So I've only hunt in grizzly country one time and it was
- 27:51eerie dude. Like I remember we didn't see
- 27:54one ever. But like we were hiking in this
- 27:56fresh, fresh snow. It was actively dumping and we
- 27:59came up this hill and there was like, dude, I mean, the biggest
- 28:01tracks I've ever seen in my life and I'm like, this feels a
- 28:05little sketchy, 'cause you know, he was just there.
- 28:07Oh yeah, that's the more scary part is like when you know
- 28:09they're there. Yeah, I have a size 13 boot and
- 28:11I've had Grizz prints bigger than my boot.
- 28:13Yeah, they're they're big, but the scariest 1 for me.
- 28:17I had two instances. One we were at camp and we had
- 28:19this dog named Zip and he doesn't bark or ground unless
- 28:22there's a bear beer by it. So he keeps growling, growling,
- 28:24growling, finally gets to barking.
- 28:25And my buddy Dan's just like he's this old time cowboy, like
- 28:29straight up should have been born in the Old West era.
- 28:31And he was like, let's go see what this is.
- 28:33And I'm like feeling tough. I got a 480 Ultramag giant bear
- 28:36gun and I'm like, yeah, let's go check this bear out.
- 28:38My one buddy goes and hides in the tent.
- 28:40He's like, Nope, screw this. That goes and sits in the tent
- 28:44and so I go walking out and it's pitch black, right?
- 28:46Got my headlamp on. We get on the riverbank and I
- 28:48shine my headlamp down the riverbank and this freaking
- 28:51pumpkin heads like this big. He just turns and stands and
- 28:54looks at me and he's like 60 yards away and I was like, I'm
- 28:58done. I went and crawled back in the
- 29:01tent with my buddy. I was like we had a bluff charge
- 29:07on the edge of a Meadow just laying out because we've been in
- 29:10a snowstorm. We're trying to dry out sunshine
- 29:12and, and we just hear this crash behind us.
- 29:16And from the time it took me to roll over onto my stomach, that
- 29:19bear had already come to the edge of the Meadow, stopped,
- 29:21stood up and was staring at us. And I just got to my stomach to
- 29:25see him. And that bear turns and burns
- 29:27back up into the timber. And I'm like, if he wanted, if
- 29:29he kept coming, like we're done. Like one of us is getting hit.
- 29:32Like they're just so fast. I, I think it's like 30 miles an
- 29:35hour they can run or something like that.
- 29:36Like something ridiculous. It's either 20 or 30, but they
- 29:40just move and they're quick. Yeah.
- 29:42Scariest critter in the woods? Dude, I don't even sometimes
- 29:46because I'm always going and it's always with James one
- 29:49because I'm filming him or he's telling me.
- 29:51It's like I always have somebody there so I don't feel like the
- 29:55nerves of like predators around as much.
- 29:59But then like the only time like it happened and it was just
- 30:02like, what am I? Why am I dumb?
- 30:04Was the time that we ran into the mountain and.
- 30:06I. Was like, I got to thinking
- 30:11about it and I'm just like Brenda, we don't hunt like
- 30:14grizzly punter or whatnot. Like the most of my season black
- 30:17bear. And I'm so used to those from
- 30:18Florida that I'm like, I just yell at it and the thing will
- 30:20run away. But the one time like we haunted
- 30:24in Utah, I'm with him and we ran into that Mountain Lion and I
- 30:27was like, I'm out here with no pistol, no nothing, no fair
- 30:32stray. It's me and my my sliver Slinger
- 30:37like, and what am I doing? And that one got me thinking
- 30:42that like down the road, if we ever go back to Utah or up to
- 30:46Idaho or, you know, some of these more predatory, like, you
- 30:50know, areas, I don't think I will go out as nonchalantly
- 30:55anymore as I have in the past just because that one experience
- 31:00was not for me. Like I'm just a sitting duck.
- 31:03Like I literally put myself in this situation with no, no
- 31:08protection whatsoever. I don't think I will do that
- 31:11again. But but I don't get as nervous
- 31:13about them. But I think that's 'cause I'm
- 31:14with you. I'm never out by myself.
- 31:18The the dumbest thing I've ever done in the woods and this was
- 31:21like my you're not invincible moment, like you need to pull
- 31:24your head out type moment. I shot a big mealy buck right
- 31:27kill this deer clear on the other side of the Canyon.
- 31:30It's right before dark. I shoot him and then I crawl up
- 31:33the hill and I get up the hill and I look back and that deer is
- 31:36gone. Like I watched him tip his head
- 31:38over and like die. And I went back up to get my
- 31:40boots because I took my boots off, of course.
- 31:42So I climb up, get my boots, get my pack and it's gone.
- 31:44And I'm like, where did this thing go?
- 31:46So I come down the hill, get to where he's at.
- 31:48I follow this little blood trail and I look down into this little
- 31:51like green patch of grass on this rock facing there.
- 31:54He is sitting there and I'm like OK, he's right there.
- 31:57So I walked down there and he's already got his ass and aid out.
- 31:59Like son had already got a hold of him in like 3045 minutes.
- 32:03I'm like this is crazy. Never had this happen before.
- 32:07So it's getting dark and I'm an idiot.
- 32:09I went over there at 8:00 in the morning thinking this was going
- 32:12to be a quick stock. I end up killing him at like 637
- 32:15o'clock at night. And so like I had a bag of
- 32:17Skittles, a water bottle, a headlamp and a lighter like
- 32:21that's all I have, right. And so like I'm or I didn't even
- 32:24have a headlamp. Sorry, I had my phone.
- 32:26And so I'm I'm cutting this deer up.
- 32:28My phone dies. So the Cape is terrible.
- 32:30We actually had to take a different piece of Cape and
- 32:32patch it together because I did such a terrible skidding jump.
- 32:35But I get this deer cut up. I load them up hole because I've
- 32:38hauled deer off hole off the mountain all the time, right?
- 32:40I load them up hole and I start walking around this point and I
- 32:42start getting like tired and dizzy and I'm like, I am, I'm
- 32:45hurting like in a bad way. Like I just sat all day in the
- 32:48sun. I'm super dehydrated.
- 32:49I was like, this is bad. And I've got like 7 miles back
- 32:52to camp and I'm like, and so I'm like made the decision.
- 32:55I set my pack down. I take out the Skittles, take my
- 32:58water bottle and the filter because the water bottle's empty
- 33:01at this point. I got a filter, so I've got
- 33:03Skittles, a water bottle, a filter and a lighter.
- 33:06And it's like I shine my lighter and like I can't find my bow.
- 33:08Like I'm getting like almost delirious at this point.
- 33:11And I was like, screw, I've got to go.
- 33:12So I start burning up this hill and same thing.
- 33:15I'm walking up this hill and I'm like, I keep feeling like
- 33:17there's something behind me and I'm like, Nah, it's just me
- 33:19being delirious, right? Like I'm walking, walking,
- 33:21walking. Finally I start hearing stuff
- 33:23dead calm night and I'm like, there's something behind me.
- 33:26And so I like stop and I hear it and I told my lighter up and I
- 33:29shine my lighter and there's two juvenile cats following me up
- 33:33this hill and I'm covered in blood.
- 33:35I've got forever to go. And I'm like, screw it.
- 33:37And I just start screaming and running up these cats.
- 33:39And these two cats kind of, you know, get back and then they
- 33:41take off a little bit. And then I, I keep running them
- 33:43down until eventually they start running off and then I'm
- 33:46nervous. So then I'm running up the
- 33:47trail. Get the water.
- 33:49I had a broken wrist. I actually shot that deer with a
- 33:51peak cast on. I took a Dremel tool and carved
- 33:54it out so I could hold my hinge while I shot this cat that's
- 33:57inside. I got this peak cast off, my
- 33:59hands broken. But I get to this lake and I'm
- 34:02like, oh, I only have to drop a couple 100 feet to get this.
- 34:04Like it was 900 vertical feet I had to drop to get there.
- 34:08I'm sipping out of the lake with my life straw and I'm like
- 34:11laying there and I'm like, I should just lay here for the
- 34:13night. And I'm like, no, you're going
- 34:14to freeze, you idiot. And so like, I get up, start
- 34:16hiking back up this hill. I had like 2000 feet almost to
- 34:20climb by the time to get back on the wall to camp.
- 34:22Get up there. I get to camp at 3:00 in the
- 34:25morning. My buddies like, are you OK?
- 34:26And I'm like, no, I'm dying. I go down to the hospital the
- 34:30next day to cut my cast off because it got all bloody.
- 34:33And like they always check your vitals and everything and they
- 34:35put the Eric, you're not OK. They're like, you need to go to
- 34:38the ER And I'm like, Nah, I'm fine.
- 34:40I had a couple Gatorades like I'm good.
- 34:42Like just cut this cast off and they cut it off and they're
- 34:44like, do you want another one? I was like, no, I get Hun, the
- 34:47season, I ain't got time for this nonsense.
- 34:48But that was like my hey, quit being an idiot moment.
- 34:52Yeah, I carry a 10 mil around with me everywhere I go now.
- 34:55That is an absolute banger and I think a great way to cap the pod
- 34:59because I don't want that camera to die and to corrupt the Cliff
- 35:01like that one time. So Towson bro, Great story
- 35:06there. Good luck this weekend.
- 35:07Go crush it. Three hundreds.
- 35:08Check them out on Instagram. His information will be in the
- 35:11description. And then yeah, let's freaking
- 35:13crush some three hundreds, bro. All of them.
