- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to an Airwave Media podcast.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Hi everybody, and welcome to Who Did Want Now?
- 0:19Speaker 1: The History Podcast It's not Your History Class Bettysode with
- 0:23Speaker 1: your host Katie Charlwood, History Harla and reader of books.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Well impromptu, Bettysode.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Yay, because I wanted to do something different and not
- 0:36Speaker 3: at all, because I've been incredibly busy and I'm knee
- 0:40Speaker 3: deep in research and I got irrationally mad today because
- 0:44Speaker 3: of a book.
- 0:46Speaker 4: And yeah, so, like the kids and I were rebuilding furniture,
- 0:49Speaker 4: or building furniture, i should say, for their bedrooms. We
- 0:53Speaker 4: got all that put together. It's not all finished, but
- 0:55Speaker 4: you know, it's a good start. And I've been doing
- 0:58Speaker 4: homework and trying to get them into like a whole routine,
- 1:02Speaker 4: which in itself is it's it's it's a lot. Also
- 1:06Speaker 4: in addition, furthermore, I've got like a super secret.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Super secret, eh project coming.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Up, and I've been I've been working on that.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I've been doing some like research and stuff, some research,
- 1:18Speaker 1: lots of research and stuff. And I still don't have
- 1:21Speaker 1: a fully functioning worktop, no, a fully functioning laptop.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Jesus Christ, fuck me seriously.
- 1:30Speaker 1: And yeah, so I'm still recording on my phone, and
- 1:32Speaker 1: I'm really sorry about that, but that's just how it is.
- 1:36Speaker 2: That being said, that being said.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I do want to thank everybody, everybody, like I cannot
- 1:45Speaker 1: express to you just how much joy and I don't
- 1:50Speaker 1: want to say confidence, but like good feelings from all,
- 1:54Speaker 1: like the positive stuff you all have been saying in
- 1:56Speaker 1: the and like the reviews because you've been reading and
- 1:59Speaker 1: reviewing five stars and like Spotify and what's the other one?
- 2:04Speaker 1: Apple podcasts and just they're so lovely. I mean, I
- 2:08Speaker 1: know lots of podcasters they're like, it's all for the
- 2:11Speaker 1: business end, it's nothing to do with their ego. I'll
- 2:13Speaker 1: be honest with you, it is for the business end.
- 2:16Speaker 2: But my ego thanks to you because on the bad days,
- 2:20Speaker 2: those reviews really they really fucking help.
- 2:24Speaker 1: You know, knowing that you're enjoying this and I'm creating
- 2:28Speaker 1: something that you like, it makes me feel really good
- 2:32Speaker 1: about the fact that I'm making this. And I greatly
- 2:36Speaker 1: greatly fucking appreciate all of you and what I'm going
- 2:40Speaker 1: to be doing because I said I would do it,
- 2:43Speaker 1: and I don't like to go back on my word ever,
- 2:46Speaker 1: because I was kind of raised a weird way. I
- 2:49Speaker 1: don't like to misleader, misinform or lie. They're not kind
- 2:53Speaker 1: of a jam or my butter. And I said that
- 2:56Speaker 1: once I hit two hundred thousand followers on TikTok, that
- 2:58Speaker 1: I was going to do it like a give a
- 3:00Speaker 1: on my Instagram.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Which I'm gonna do. Which I'm gonna do.
- 3:04Speaker 1: I just have to get around to filming a damn
- 3:07Speaker 1: video for it and then working out the logistics because
- 3:11Speaker 1: doing it on Instagram is just easier, just logistically, just
- 3:14Speaker 1: like logistically, Instagram just works better for those kind of things. Sorry,
- 3:17Speaker 1: my voice is also starting to go, but I'm gonna
- 3:20Speaker 1: do my best.
- 3:21Speaker 2: But anyway, I know what you're thinking.
- 3:23Speaker 1: You're thinking, quite your chibber jabber and just fact me
- 3:26Speaker 1: in fact you I will. So I thought let's have
- 3:29Speaker 1: a wee bonus betty sod because I'm not working, and thought.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Eh, why not? You know how it is?
- 3:36Speaker 1: So this is a bitty sod if you're new here
- 3:40Speaker 1: on bittysdes are like the little bits of history that
- 3:42Speaker 1: don't quite fit in anywhere else. So if I was
- 3:45Speaker 1: to cover what Titanic say, I doubt I have time
- 3:49Speaker 1: to cover the whole lavatory situation. Because it's one episode,
- 3:52Speaker 1: I do try and keep it under an hour, and
- 3:54Speaker 1: there's so much stuff to talk about it, I think
- 3:56Speaker 1: i'd probably only mention the lose in like a passing comment.
- 4:00Speaker 1: But I found this really fucking interesting, and so I'm
- 4:04Speaker 1: going to burden you all with the information as well.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Bathing facilities on.
- 4:08Speaker 1: The Titanic were interesting and also surprising for the time,
- 4:15Speaker 1: Like in general, what's quite funny is some of the
- 4:18Speaker 1: second class cabins actually had certain first class what dold
- 4:24Speaker 1: you call it? Like first class uh brain features, So
- 4:29Speaker 1: like some second class cabins, they had first class features,
- 4:33Speaker 1: and like the reason this was was because if they had, say,
- 4:37Speaker 1: overbooked too many first class cabins, they could easily put
- 4:42Speaker 1: people into the second class cabins, which were decent better
- 4:47Speaker 1: than more second class anyway, So very few cabins on
- 4:51Speaker 1: the Titanic had private bathtubs. So Captain Edward Smith he
- 4:56Speaker 1: had one with a porcelain tub that could be filled
- 4:59Speaker 1: with and I quote fresh water or seawater, both hot
- 5:04Speaker 1: and cold, so like he could have a hot bath,
- 5:08Speaker 1: or he could have a cold sea bath, which I'm
- 5:11Speaker 1: sure was very good for joints, or something I mean cool.
- 5:18Speaker 1: So parlor suites as well, they were like really fucking elaborate,
- 5:22Speaker 1: and they would have private bathtubs too, and they were
- 5:28Speaker 1: on what was it B deck, and so these parlor
- 5:31Speaker 1: suites they would have, you know, multiple bedrooms, closets, private decks.
- 5:38Speaker 2: You know, they were the fucking shit, you know what
- 5:41Speaker 2: I mean.
- 5:42Speaker 1: But like most passengers, they wouldn't really have their own
- 5:46Speaker 1: bathing facilities, like it just wasn't an option, so they
- 5:50Speaker 1: would have to use like communal bathrooms, public bathrooms, and
- 5:54Speaker 1: they had special attendants so and they were there basically
- 5:58Speaker 1: to you know, sort out the people, but also keep
- 6:01Speaker 1: the entire like area clean, so they would disinfect it
- 6:04Speaker 1: and clean it after each sort of bather. So in
- 6:08Speaker 1: like each deck of the Titanic they had, they had
- 6:11Speaker 1: these communal bathrooms. But like depending on which deck your honor,
- 6:17Speaker 1: which a class you were part of, sorry, depending on
- 6:20Speaker 1: your class, you know.
- 6:23Speaker 2: The amount of lavatories lose and such.
- 6:27Speaker 1: They would be greatly reduced the further down the ladder
- 6:31Speaker 1: you go. So when a passenger wanted to use a bath,
- 6:36Speaker 1: wanted to go for a wee rubb a dub dub
- 6:38Speaker 1: in a tub, they would have their bedroom steward make
- 6:41Speaker 1: an appointment with one of the bath stewards or stewardesses.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Who would then prepare their bath for them.
- 6:47Speaker 1: So like first and second class they had like a
- 6:51Speaker 1: fuck ton of like bathtubs at the ready, so people
- 6:55Speaker 1: didn't really have to wait when they wanted to have
- 6:58Speaker 1: a good week clean.
- 7:00Speaker 5: But all of third class, oh seven hundred of them
- 7:06Speaker 5: shared two bathtubs, so like one was for men and
- 7:10Speaker 5: one was for women.
- 7:11Speaker 1: So there's like four hundred and fifty men and two
- 7:15Speaker 1: hundred or so women, and then there's whatever kids. So
- 7:19Speaker 1: the four hundred and something men, they would be in
- 7:22Speaker 1: one bathtub and the women would be allocated to the.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Other bathtub, but there's no allocation for kids.
- 7:28Speaker 1: So like, but most cabins, as I said, even in
- 7:30Speaker 1: third class, had like we sinks and stuff at them,
- 7:33Speaker 1: so they would be able to like top and tail
- 7:36Speaker 1: the kids and stuff like that, you know, basic basic cleanliness,
- 7:40Speaker 1: like really basic stuff. But chances are if that wasn't happening,
- 7:44Speaker 1: like all the kids are the same family like brothers, sisters, cousins,
- 7:48Speaker 1: they would all.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Be chucked in the same tub because.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Like, like I was still doing that with my kids,
- 7:56Speaker 1: like like I remember having to share baths with my
- 7:59Speaker 1: cousins in like the late eighties, early nineties.
- 8:02Speaker 2: So like, you know, it didn't stop.
- 8:04Speaker 1: So like, continuing with the toilet scenario, this is like,
- 8:08Speaker 1: so toilets, this is actually really interesting toilets, right, So
- 8:12Speaker 1: the toilets on the Titanic, like for first and second class,
- 8:15Speaker 1: they were manual, right, so the kid like what we
- 8:18Speaker 1: would have, you would pull the thing and it would flush.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Third class, however, had automated toilets. And you're thinking that's
- 8:25Speaker 1: a bit fancy for third classic, and they got the
- 8:27Speaker 1: way fancy automated toilets in the first and second class didn't. Well,
- 8:33Speaker 1: I'm glad you asked, because I'll tell you the toilets
- 8:35Speaker 1: in third class had automated flushing. Because the ship designers
- 8:41Speaker 1: and such were concerned that the third class passengers would
- 8:46Speaker 1: have little to no sort of familiarity, would have little
- 8:52Speaker 1: to no sort of interaction with a toilet, Like they
- 8:55Speaker 1: wouldn't have seen a toilet because it's so poor, you know,
- 8:59Speaker 1: they would been so they assume so like the assumption
- 9:03Speaker 1: was and maybe rightly so in some cases, that most
- 9:08Speaker 1: of the lower class folk they would have used chamber
- 9:13Speaker 1: pots and outhouses which sort of modern society had sort
- 9:18Speaker 1: of moved on from. And as such, third class passengers
- 9:23Speaker 1: wouldn't have known necessarily that they needed to actually flush
- 9:26Speaker 1: the toilets, and so automated toilets the flushing is done
- 9:30Speaker 1: for them.
- 9:31Speaker 2: In order to like help sort of to you know,
- 9:35Speaker 2: maneuver these things. Matron Catherine Wallace had been given the duty.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Like her job was to help the steerage passengers, like
- 9:45Speaker 1: learn how to use toilets, you know, and assist them
- 9:50Speaker 1: with basic cleanliness.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Stuff like I don't know if you know. It is
- 9:55Speaker 2: like when third class passengers before.
- 9:58Speaker 1: They could get on the ship, they had to go
- 10:02Speaker 1: through like this intense cleanliness inspection, like they did, like
- 10:07Speaker 1: they were checking them for like lice and nits and.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Probably scabies as well.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Like it was a full thing because they didn't want,
- 10:13Speaker 1: you know, bugs on the ship and they wanted to
- 10:16Speaker 1: make sure everybody was clean. Not so fun fact that,
- 10:20Speaker 1: but Catherine Wallace was when the ship went down, she
- 10:25Speaker 1: refused to leave the passengers in third class, and because
- 10:28Speaker 1: she wouldn't leave them, she died alongside them, probably giving
- 10:31Speaker 1: comfort to some of those who were panicking and terrified.
- 10:35Speaker 2: But in other news before I started crying. As we know,
- 10:38Speaker 2: the Titanic was the height of luxury.
- 10:41Speaker 1: It was the most luxurious and fucking expensive ship.
- 10:45Speaker 2: It was five star hotel on the ocean.
- 10:49Speaker 1: And in addition to you know, having private bathtubs and
- 10:55Speaker 1: fine dining and all that malarkey, first class passengers had
- 11:00Speaker 1: swimming baths.
- 11:01Speaker 2: And you're thinking, okay, yeah, I'm sure you've all heard
- 11:04Speaker 2: the joke about.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Oh, the swimming pool the Titanic is still full of water,
- 11:07Speaker 1: which honestly is the most annoying joke, a really fucking
- 11:11Speaker 1: disrespectful joke. So many people lost their lives this horrific catastrophe.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Maybe don't make insensitive jokes about it.
- 11:23Speaker 1: And I just found it in really a part from
- 11:24Speaker 1: the fact it's really annoying because we've all heard it
- 11:26Speaker 1: like five hundred times.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Anyway, Turkish baths.
- 11:30Speaker 6: There was Turkish baths, Victorian Turkish bath on the Titanic,
- 11:36Speaker 6: so first class passengers would be able to use it
- 11:40Speaker 6: for an additional fee.
- 11:42Speaker 7: They would be able to enjoy the facilities. So the
- 11:46Speaker 7: Turkish bath, fuck me. The Turkish bath had steam and
- 11:50Speaker 7: massage rooms and an electric bath.
- 11:54Speaker 2: So the electric bath was meant to warm the body,
- 11:59Speaker 2: so it wasn't like.
- 12:01Speaker 1: A bath bath, but it basically kind of looked like
- 12:04Speaker 1: an iron long or like a tanning bed, you know,
- 12:08Speaker 1: that kind of that kind of thing. So the obviously
- 12:11Speaker 1: male and female passengers, they wouldn't go to the Turkish
- 12:14Speaker 1: baths at the same time. They would be allocated times,
- 12:17Speaker 1: so because there would be three male attendants and two
- 12:20Speaker 1: female attendants, you.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Know, because it would have been unseemly for a man
- 12:25Speaker 2: to be attending a woman at the Turkish baths. But yeah,
- 12:29Speaker 2: it was. It was a fun one.
- 12:32Speaker 1: And so and that is the story of toilets on
- 12:35Speaker 1: the Titanic.
- 12:37Speaker 2: I couldn't help myself. I'm so sorry. And that sends
- 12:40Speaker 2: our story of toilets on the Titanic. I hope you
- 12:43Speaker 2: like this Bitysod bonus bitisode.
- 12:45Speaker 1: By the way, if you liked this wee Bitysod, don't

- 13:49Speaker 1: So I'm actually going to recommend two podcasts for you
- 13:55Speaker 1: for listening. Sticking with theme, we have Aaron, my friend who
- 14:00Speaker 1: I met on a plane. Even though I usually don't
- 14:02Speaker 1: talk to people when I travel, it's fine. Aaron has
- 14:07Speaker 1: the time to talk Titanic podcast, so go check that out.
- 14:12Speaker 1: And of course we have Lovely Melissa and God's Heroes.
- 14:17Speaker 1: It is a deep dive her. Her first season was
- 14:21Speaker 1: just absolutely amazing and you can also watch her on
- 14:24Speaker 1: TikTok Melissa fairlady.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Go check her out.
- 14:28Speaker 1: So watching if you're not already watching Midnight, go watch
- 14:31Speaker 1: Midnight if it's your thing. If it's not your thing,
- 14:33Speaker 1: the Gilded Age is pretty good, you go check it out.
- 14:38Speaker 1: And reading wise, I'm going to recommend a book that
- 14:41Speaker 1: I just received a week ago or so, and it
- 14:44Speaker 1: is Advice from Strangers by Rachel Paris.
- 14:48Speaker 2: It's a little bit different to.
- 14:49Speaker 1: What I normally recommend, but I'm enjoying it.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I'm enjoying it, and.
- 14:53Speaker 1: I didn't have to pay custom fees to get it,
- 14:55Speaker 1: which was really nice. I'd pre ordered it because I
- 14:58Speaker 1: wanted a signed one. It's fine, it's fine. I love
- 15:02Speaker 1: her your Paris, and I love her work. And I'm
- 15:04Speaker 1: hoping to have a better quality thing next time. And
- 15:08Speaker 1: hopefully next time you hear from me, it will be
- 15:10Speaker 1: from my you know, cheap little setup, as opposed to
- 15:13Speaker 1: on my phone, as opposed to hiding as opposed to
- 15:17Speaker 1: on my phone in the corner of my bedroom, hoping
- 15:19Speaker 1: my bed doesn't creak. And with that, I am going,
- 15:23Speaker 1: And with that, I am going to bid you farewell
- 15:26Speaker 1: and I will chat to you next time.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Adios or revoir of.
- 15:30Speaker 1: What is there?
- 15:30Speaker 2: My friends, a bye bye
