- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Patriots Draft Countdown presented by bud Light.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Welcome to an NFL draft posted.
- 0:07Speaker 3: By the writers of Patriots dot Com.
- 0:10Speaker 2: From now until you here the New England Patriots. What
- 0:13Speaker 2: the countdown is on?
- 0:15Speaker 3: Welcome to the Patriots Draft Countdown presented by bud Light.
- 0:20Speaker 4: What's up, everybody, We're back with another episode of Patriots
- 0:23Speaker 4: Draft Countdown presented by bud Light. Easy to Drink, Easy
- 0:26Speaker 4: to enjoy, bud Light, the official drink of the New
- 0:28Speaker 4: England Patriots.
- 0:29Speaker 5: And guys.
- 0:29Speaker 4: Today, we have an episode focusing on the defensive backs.
- 0:32Speaker 4: We have a film review from Evan Lazar and we
- 0:35Speaker 4: also have an interview with the one and only Daniel Jeremiah.
- 0:37Speaker 4: But before we get into that, we want to go
- 0:39Speaker 4: over some weekend news and guys.
- 0:41Speaker 5: We had a lot.
- 0:41Speaker 4: We got Paul Parrillo, Chris Cassidy here, we had JJ
- 0:45Speaker 4: McCarthy right to the top, very similar to some I
- 0:49Speaker 4: would say, Zach Wilson. So what do you guys think
- 0:51Speaker 4: about that?
- 0:51Speaker 6: Yeah, not buying it. You know, on the surface, I
- 0:55Speaker 6: think JJ McCarthy has some ability. I'm not telling you
- 0:57Speaker 6: that I think that he doesn't belong in this converse
- 1:00Speaker 6: station with the other quarterbacks. I think he's got more
- 1:03Speaker 6: athleticism than he's given credit for. I think he's shown
- 1:06Speaker 6: the ability to move around in the pocket and make plays.
- 1:08Speaker 6: But you know, the most recent stuff coming out of
- 1:11Speaker 6: the owners meetings, you know, talking about possibly Washington at
- 1:16Speaker 6: number two. I have to think they're trying to pump
- 1:18Speaker 6: this guy's value up for some reason, maybe trying to
- 1:21Speaker 6: increase the the importance of those picks, see if you
- 1:25Speaker 6: can entice somebody to move up. But I don't see
- 1:27Speaker 6: JJ McCarthy being on par with those other guys, you know,
- 1:31Speaker 6: Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels in Drake May. I think
- 1:34Speaker 6: he's a notch below those guys.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Sam Chris, what do you think.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I definitely see more excuse me as like a second
- 1:39Speaker 1: round type of guy. I mean, he had a great
- 1:43Speaker 1: pro day. I mean nothing, nothing new there. But at
- 1:46Speaker 1: the same time, it's like this whole time he's been
- 1:49Speaker 1: pushed as that second round quarterback. You can go and
- 1:52Speaker 1: get them, you can focus on the Jane Daniels, Caleb Williams,
- 1:55Speaker 1: Drake May's of the world in the first round. JJ
- 1:57Speaker 1: McCarthy has always been that second round sort of so
- 2:00Speaker 1: I don't know what is causing all of this extra
- 2:03Speaker 1: hype around it. I think it's really interesting. I mean,
- 2:07Speaker 1: he's great nobility, he didn't throw the ball all that
- 2:11Speaker 1: much at Michigan. He threw a good amount, and he
- 2:13Speaker 1: had a great receiver in Roman Wilson. But I mean again,
- 2:18Speaker 1: I don't fully see that first round upside for him.
- 2:21Speaker 6: Yeah, and that's basically my point with him is I
- 2:24Speaker 6: think he has ability. I probably think that you could
- 2:26Speaker 6: talk yourself into a first round pick.
- 2:28Speaker 5: That's fine.
- 2:29Speaker 6: I just think he's more of a projection because of
- 2:31Speaker 6: what Chris just said. He didn't throw as much in
- 2:34Speaker 6: college as the other guys. Now he's younger, so I
- 2:37Speaker 6: guess that's a you know, a plus for him, especially
- 2:39Speaker 6: if you're looking to take him and maybe understanding that
- 2:42Speaker 6: you're not going to play in right away, you know,
- 2:44Speaker 6: sort to get him more acclimated to the pro game.
- 2:47Speaker 6: But I feel like the other guys had to carry
- 2:49Speaker 6: their teams JJ McCarthy one more than the other guys,
- 2:53Speaker 6: but I think he had, you know, quote unquote less
- 2:55Speaker 6: to do with it than the other guys.
- 2:57Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:57Speaker 4: The real discussion will be if why Washington makes that pick,
- 3:01Speaker 4: what the trickle down effect will.
- 3:02Speaker 6: Be great news, great news for the New England Patriots.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Give gives you some options there. But guys, we also
- 3:07Speaker 4: had owner owner meetings, league meetings and some new rules
- 3:11Speaker 4: got made, so we have the kickoff changes. But the
- 3:13Speaker 4: one that kind of effects of Patriots maybe their draft
- 3:15Speaker 4: situation is the hip drop tackle. We're seen tackling kind
- 3:19Speaker 4: of taken out of the game here. So how's that
- 3:21Speaker 4: approach are you going to take.
- 3:22Speaker 6: I don't like the rule obviously, but I mean, I
- 3:25Speaker 6: think every team's in the same boat. I don't necessarily
- 3:28Speaker 6: think it it will impact as much with the draft.
- 3:30Speaker 6: I think, you know, what I would worry about from
- 3:33Speaker 6: a defensive point of view, and I saw Juwan Bentley
- 3:36Speaker 6: was very very active on social media talking about this stuff.
- 3:41Speaker 6: You can't hit high, you can't hit low. Now you
- 3:44Speaker 6: can't hit in the middle. So I don't really know
- 3:46Speaker 6: what a defensive player to do. And the thing that
- 3:49Speaker 6: would bother me the most if I were an NFL
- 3:51Speaker 6: defensive player, you know.
- 3:52Speaker 5: And I could be.
- 3:53Speaker 6: I mean, it's it's not a stretch, But what will
- 3:56Speaker 6: bother me the most in all seriousness, would be sort
- 4:00Speaker 6: of the comments coming out of those meetings about you
- 4:03Speaker 6: might not see it as much with flags on the field,
- 4:05Speaker 6: but you're gonna see it with fines.
- 4:07Speaker 5: Yeah, that would really bug me if I were.
- 4:10Speaker 6: You know, especially like a safety, you know, having a
- 4:13Speaker 6: deal with these huge tight ends.
- 4:14Speaker 5: You're trying to figure out a way to get them
- 4:15Speaker 5: on the ground.
- 4:16Speaker 4: If you're like a Marcus Jones size player and you
- 4:18Speaker 4: got Derek Henry running at you, what are you supposed
- 4:20Speaker 4: to do?
- 4:21Speaker 1: It's gonna be interesting. I think I want to sort
- 4:24Speaker 1: of compare it to the pass interference penalty that was revoked. Thankfully,
- 4:30Speaker 1: I hope that the flag is to be thrown isn't
- 4:32Speaker 1: going to be thrown as much as that pass interference
- 4:34Speaker 1: flag was. It's tough to overturn things like that, and
- 4:39Speaker 1: also not to you'd be able to overturn it, but
- 4:41Speaker 1: that's a tough penalty. And that's they're just playing football.
- 4:44Speaker 1: They're going in for a normal tackle.
- 4:45Speaker 7: There.
- 4:46Speaker 1: They've been taught this since they were in second grade.
- 4:48Speaker 1: This is how you hit, and it's it's it's upsetting, honestly,
- 4:52Speaker 1: in my opinion.
- 4:52Speaker 6: You're keeping the head out of the hit, You're leading
- 4:55Speaker 6: with your shoulder, you're targeting the mid section exactly, but
- 4:59Speaker 6: you're rolling in way that they don't like, you know,
- 5:01Speaker 6: unwaiting yourself. I just think you're really asking for a
- 5:06Speaker 6: lot of trouble and trying to adjudicate that. I think
- 5:09Speaker 6: it's going to be difficult. I think you're going to
- 5:11Speaker 6: see uh plays that are going to impact games on
- 5:15Speaker 6: routine tackles. And I know it's all about player safety,
- 5:19Speaker 6: and I would certainly never advocate anything that's not in
- 5:22Speaker 6: the name of player safety. It's it's a violent game,
- 5:25Speaker 6: and I understand it. I think this one's tough. I
- 5:28Speaker 6: think the kickoff one tease, this makes a little.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Bit more sense. It's gonna be a little different.
- 5:32Speaker 6: It's gonna be jarring to people who haven't seen it.
- 5:35Speaker 6: Psychos like tease and I we we watch a little
- 5:37Speaker 6: spring football, so we've seen this. We've seen XFL games,
- 5:41Speaker 6: We've seen this kickoff a little bit. I think it's
- 5:44Speaker 6: going to be really really an adjustment though for people
- 5:46Speaker 6: who haven't.
- 5:47Speaker 4: And it also gets rid of the surprise on sidekick
- 5:49Speaker 4: now because now you need to they got to do something,
- 5:52Speaker 4: and so we'll see what happens with that. Course the
- 5:53Speaker 4: guy things to say about that.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I kind of like the kickoff setup.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I think, you know, have loved to have seen the
- 6:01Speaker 1: slater in this type of role to see what more
- 6:03Speaker 1: of an impact he could have had, because he was
- 6:05Speaker 1: that constant gunner for the Patriots, just sprinting down the sideline,
- 6:09Speaker 1: gets to the ball first. And now you don't really
- 6:12Speaker 1: have that. Now it's more of a scrum rugby style
- 6:16Speaker 1: of play, and I think that'll, in my opinion, draw
- 6:19Speaker 1: a little bit more interest on the opening kickoff because
- 6:21Speaker 1: usually when you're watching a game, if you're at home.
- 6:24Speaker 4: You're gonna go get beer.
- 6:26Speaker 6: You just explain it real quick. You're still kicking off
- 6:29Speaker 6: from the thirty five, but the rest of the kickoff.
- 6:31Speaker 5: Team is now up at.
- 6:33Speaker 6: The thirty five thirty five, within five to ten yards
- 6:38Speaker 6: of everybody on the receiving team, with the exception of
- 6:41Speaker 6: the two returners. You have to have two returners in
- 6:44Speaker 6: the quote unquote landing area. So basically nineteen of the
- 6:49Speaker 6: twenty two players that are on the field for that
- 6:51Speaker 6: play will now be aligned within five to ten yards
- 6:54Speaker 6: of each other, which is ostensibly gonna cut down on
- 6:57Speaker 6: those violent hits that take place in space. You know,
- 7:01Speaker 6: with a guy running with a full head of steam.
- 7:03Speaker 6: So that one I can understand the player safety, you know,
- 7:07Speaker 6: I get that, And they're trying to get returns back
- 7:09Speaker 6: in the game because the result.
- 7:11Speaker 7: Now last year bunds the whole time they were.
- 7:13Speaker 6: Yeah, and there's also different touchback limitations that as you
- 7:17Speaker 6: go as well.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Yeah. So then we also got coach Mayo saying, looks
- 7:21Speaker 4: like big Mike is gonna be playing right tackle, So
- 7:23Speaker 4: that's what.
- 7:24Speaker 6: We're starting, he said, yeah, he did say he would.
- 7:27Speaker 6: He could be moving them around.
- 7:28Speaker 4: It looks like it's a big option. So that might
- 7:30Speaker 4: change how we approach drafting alignment and what what round
- 7:34Speaker 4: we do it, And hopefully we do do it because
- 7:35Speaker 4: we need one.
- 7:36Speaker 6: Maybe maybe they're going to draft they're going to keep
- 7:38Speaker 6: him at right tackle because they're gonna draft Michael Penis,
- 7:40Speaker 6: and that'll be the blind side think of that.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I mean talking about Penis though, kind of going back
- 7:45Speaker 1: to the JJ McCarthy discussion. I know we're kind of
- 7:48Speaker 1: off of it, but he's a guy that threw the
- 7:50Speaker 1: ball a million times in Washington. You can see his arm,
- 7:53Speaker 1: you can see his uh progress throughout the season, and
- 7:57Speaker 1: he's still semi mobile. I mean, you worry about his
- 7:59Speaker 1: injuries here and then, but like that, that's the type
- 8:02Speaker 1: of person I would see in that like solidified second
- 8:05Speaker 1: round role, like maybe moving up into the first whereas
- 8:08Speaker 1: JJ I don't really see that.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Yeah you know, got you well anything else. On the weekend, we.
- 8:14Speaker 6: Had some minor little uniform Yeah, you were very excited.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Yeah, we're gonna let you it's been a long time, Chris.
- 8:20Speaker 4: I don't know if you know. Pats are getting the
- 8:22Speaker 4: captain patch on the jersey, so you know, we did
- 8:25Speaker 4: a couple of years ago.
- 8:25Speaker 7: It works out differently.
- 8:27Speaker 4: But yeah, other than that, guys, we got a good
- 8:30Speaker 4: episode coming up with the defensive backs. As I said,
- 8:33Speaker 4: we also got a film breakdown and an interview with
- 8:35Speaker 4: Daniel Jeremiah. So let's get into the show.
- 8:38Speaker 8: All right, we're here talking defensive backs today, guys, not
- 8:41Speaker 8: a huge need for the Patriots.
- 8:42Speaker 5: I think we can kind of get specific.
- 8:44Speaker 8: We'll talk about some of the big guys, but overall,
- 8:46Speaker 8: Patriots drafted Christian Goanzalees last year. They got Jonathan Jones
- 8:50Speaker 8: coming back, but maybe some questions in the slot.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It's safety.
- 8:53Speaker 8: We've seen Kyle Duggar kind of move into a little
- 8:55Speaker 8: bit more of that Devin mccordy role.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Probably talk a little bit free safety stuff. But first guy,
- 8:59Speaker 2: I just want to talk off the top of and Evan.
- 9:01Speaker 8: When we were in the at the Combine and Indy,
- 9:03Speaker 8: we talked about Cooper to Gene and if Bill Belichick
- 9:06Speaker 8: was still here, Cooper de Gen will probably be the
- 9:08Speaker 8: pick at some point just because of how versatile he is.
- 9:11Speaker 5: He's a really good athlete too.
- 9:13Speaker 9: Yeah, he's basically Marcus Jones, but like a bigger version,
- 9:17Speaker 9: you know, has a little bit more of those traditional
- 9:20Speaker 9: outside cornerback traits. If you want to play him there,
- 9:23Speaker 9: play the slot, play outside, play a little safety, probably
- 9:26Speaker 9: play special teams, probably could play offense. Like you know,
- 9:28Speaker 9: He's just one of those guys that is as versatile
- 9:31Speaker 9: as as they come, and a rare, a rare type
- 9:35Speaker 9: of athlete, you know, at that position to be able
- 9:38Speaker 9: to do all those different types of things. I think
- 9:39Speaker 9: his natural home at the NFL is going to be
- 9:41Speaker 9: outside corner, but he can basically play anywhere you want
- 9:45Speaker 9: him to play.
- 9:45Speaker 8: So I forgot to introduce the whole panel to of course,
- 9:47Speaker 8: we got Chris Cassidy's back sitting in for for our
- 9:49Speaker 8: friend Paul Perrillo, aatist Bauman of course, you know me
- 9:52Speaker 8: and me and Evan Sorry crystial here going to you.
- 9:55Speaker 2: What do you got a cornerback who who tickled your fancy?
- 9:58Speaker 1: Uh, you'll have a guys Terry on Arnold and kool
- 10:01Speaker 1: Aid McKinstry. I mean, both solid cornerbacks. Probably could be
- 10:05Speaker 1: first round guys realistically. I mean I have On here.
- 10:10Speaker 1: I mean the thing with kool Aid and my making
- 10:12Speaker 1: falls is Jones fash on his foot. It's always foot injuries.
- 10:15Speaker 1: You don't want to mess with those.
- 10:16Speaker 5: Nice info.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I mean that was combined info. We found that out together.
- 10:21Speaker 1: But yeah, I know those are really serious. I mean
- 10:25Speaker 1: foot injuries they go long way. I mean you gotta
- 10:27Speaker 1: not a lot of blood flow to the foot, So
- 10:29Speaker 1: you gotta.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Four times not a lot of blood flow to the foot.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna say about Arnold. I mean, Arnold
- 10:39Speaker 1: sixty three tackles this past season. He's a go getter.
- 10:43Speaker 1: He's a downhill defensive back, like he'll meet you at
- 10:46Speaker 1: the ball at all times. So I really like what
- 10:48Speaker 1: Arnold does. So that's two guys that I really really.
- 10:51Speaker 5: Caught my near the top. Probably not Patriots I.
- 10:54Speaker 9: Would say, yeah, Tyran Arnold is probably the consensus CB
- 10:57Speaker 9: one in this class, maybe top ten, top fifteen, and pick.
- 11:00Speaker 9: His ball skills are exceptional as well. I think he
- 11:03Speaker 9: has something like eighty targets in college and he's broken
- 11:07Speaker 9: up thirty of them, or like something crazy like that
- 11:09Speaker 9: really good downhill player as Chris said, he's probably him
- 11:13Speaker 9: or Quannon Mitchell from Toledo, or there are the two
- 11:15Speaker 9: guys that are going to be the first corners off
- 11:16Speaker 9: the board.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Can we also celebrate kool Aid a meme finally making
- 11:20Speaker 4: it to the league. I remember it was like, you know,
- 11:22Speaker 4: best names, but yeah, kool Aid and tarry On Arnold.
- 11:26Speaker 4: I was watching the LSU Bama highlights and you know,
- 11:28Speaker 4: Neighbors had a crazy game, but most of his big
- 11:30Speaker 4: catches were against the safety is just breaking three broken,
- 11:34Speaker 4: broken coverages. I also love Cooper de gene as I
- 11:37Speaker 4: say that boy nice, he can HiT's safety. I could
- 11:39Speaker 4: also move into safety. I wonder if he's gonna end
- 11:41Speaker 4: up being like Devin mccordy, maybe starting off a cornerback
- 11:43Speaker 4: and then potentially moving to safety later in his career.
- 11:46Speaker 4: I also want to shout out Nat Wiggins very very physical,
- 11:50Speaker 4: likes get involved, break up the pass, and very like.
- 11:52Speaker 4: He likes to nag the receiver.
- 11:53Speaker 7: That's kind of what you want with your cornerbacks.
- 11:55Speaker 4: There.
- 11:55Speaker 5: I got another one here.
- 11:56Speaker 2: I think all of us have some familiarity with him.
- 11:59Speaker 5: He's local kid.
- 11:59Speaker 8: Mikes and Bristol were talking to you guys pregame. Everybody
- 12:03Speaker 8: was kind of mentioning him. We did did sit in
- 12:05Speaker 8: back of his parents on the way back. I gotta
- 12:08Speaker 8: the great people it was. It was really cool. They
- 12:10Speaker 8: were very proud of their son. But you know, I
- 12:13Speaker 8: don't know if it's gonna line up Evan like with him,
- 12:15Speaker 8: and yeah, he's kind to go early, but he fits,
- 12:17Speaker 8: you know, And I mean he played offense just tenacious,
- 12:20Speaker 8: six interceptions, two of them returned for touchdown.
- 12:24Speaker 5: If there was one guy that you could kind of
- 12:25Speaker 5: like slip in, what a great fit, he'd be a
- 12:27Speaker 5: good one here.
- 12:28Speaker 9: Yeah, he's There's a lot of these types of players
- 12:30Speaker 9: in this draft, unfortunately for the Patriots, because I don't
- 12:33Speaker 9: think the need in the slot is as big as
- 12:36Speaker 9: maybe another rotational body on the outside. Right now, you
- 12:39Speaker 9: have you have obviously Christian Gonzalez, but in terms of
- 12:44Speaker 9: size on the outside physicality on the outside, he still
- 12:47Speaker 9: kind of could use another guy there, whereas in the slot,
- 12:50Speaker 9: you know, you probably think Jonathan Jones is gonna play
- 12:52Speaker 9: a lot of snaps there. Marcus Jones coming back, uh,
- 12:55Speaker 9: Saint Streel to me is is a nickel and this class,
- 12:58Speaker 9: just as a general statement on the cornerback class, there
- 13:02Speaker 9: are a ton of nickels in this class. Like that's
- 13:04Speaker 9: really where it's strong, is a slot corner, especially on
- 13:08Speaker 9: Day two, so he probably is the top of that,
- 13:11Speaker 9: but there's you know, a whole list of them after that.
- 13:14Speaker 9: So this cornerback class is interesting. I don't think it's
- 13:18Speaker 9: as top heavy as past years, you know, I don't
- 13:21Speaker 9: think I think last year the top guys like a
- 13:24Speaker 9: Christian Zalez, you know, like the kid the Seahawks drafted
- 13:27Speaker 9: who have now Witherspoon, Like, I think those guys are
- 13:30Speaker 9: probably would be better than some of these guys in
- 13:33Speaker 9: this class. But ten to forty is really deep. You know,
- 13:37Speaker 9: there's probably gonna be a handful of corners taken in
- 13:40Speaker 9: that sort of range. So I'm curious to see when
- 13:43Speaker 9: these corners start coming off the board. Because of all
- 13:46Speaker 9: the offensive talent at the top of the first round.
- 13:48Speaker 9: It could be Terry on Arnold's the first corner at
- 13:51Speaker 9: eleven or twelve or something like that, which is in
- 13:54Speaker 9: most years that's pretty low.
- 13:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I also want to see it's like if the
- 13:57Speaker 4: Patch are gonna make it. Personally, I don't think they
- 13:59Speaker 4: can make pick before the fourth if they were to
- 14:01Speaker 4: take a corner. And so you gotta see if maybe
- 14:03Speaker 4: Saint Astril or Elijah Jones somebody's around there, maybe take
- 14:07Speaker 4: a flyer on them. But it just that pick can't
- 14:09Speaker 4: happen before the fourth.
- 14:10Speaker 9: Yeah, Elijah Jones is on my list. So I'm at
- 14:13Speaker 9: the Senior Bowl. Long freak athlete, maybe a little bit undersized,
- 14:18Speaker 9: you know, not not a guy that's that's huge in
- 14:20Speaker 9: terms of mass, but very athletic in a really good length,
- 14:25Speaker 9: can play on the outside, maybe play a little bit
- 14:27Speaker 9: of safety. The other name I wrote down was Cam
- 14:29Speaker 9: Hart from Notre Dame, who had a really good Senior
- 14:32Speaker 9: Bowl week. He similar size, but more physical in press
- 14:37Speaker 9: man coverage. If you want a true outside bump and
- 14:39Speaker 9: run corner in the third or fourth round, he's a
- 14:42Speaker 9: little grabby. He doesn't have a great long speed, so
- 14:44Speaker 9: he's probably not going to be that high pick. I
- 14:47Speaker 9: would look at cam Hart my number one core. I
- 14:49Speaker 9: love tierro On Arnold think is a good player. I
- 14:51Speaker 9: love Quinion Mitchell from Toledo. That guy I think is
- 14:54Speaker 9: going to be a hell of a pro. So I
- 14:55Speaker 9: would say that those are the three guys that you know,
- 14:57Speaker 9: different tiers, right, you know, Quinion Mitchell first round pick,
- 15:01Speaker 9: cam Hart day two guy maybe third or fourth round,
- 15:03Speaker 9: Elijah Jones maybe slightly after that.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I mean there's two guys that if Pats want to
- 15:09Speaker 1: go at cornerback route, I think that stand out to me.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Second third day type players. Kamari Lassiter. I think Kamari
- 15:15Speaker 1: is a solid player out of Georgia. And I really
- 15:17Speaker 1: like Kyrie Jackson out of Oregon.
- 15:20Speaker 5: Yep.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Just played his twenty twenty three season with Oregon All
- 15:23Speaker 1: Pack twelve first team. You know, he's got great tackling
- 15:28Speaker 1: grade Pro Football Focus eighty four eighty four point three tackling.
- 15:33Speaker 1: That was one of the top tacklers at Oregon. Again,
- 15:36Speaker 1: also kind of a ball hog. Three interceptions. So Kyrie
- 15:40Speaker 1: is somebody that could fall if the Pagers want to
- 15:42Speaker 1: go to the corner. They like those Oregon corners.
- 15:44Speaker 5: Yeah as well, Yeah right, a couple of couple of
- 15:46Speaker 5: me to throw out.
- 15:47Speaker 8: And then this is the guy that I saw the
- 15:48Speaker 8: combine and he just had the vibe. Max Melton from
- 15:51Speaker 8: from UH from Rutgers ran a four to three to
- 15:54Speaker 8: nine inside outside. I just playd tough, you know. Watched
- 15:57Speaker 8: a little him against Marvin Harrison Junior did a really
- 15:59Speaker 8: good Joe. I think there's no question if he if
- 16:01Speaker 8: he is a slot and you know, and I mean,
- 16:04Speaker 8: you know, just to offer a different point of view,
- 16:06Speaker 8: and we're recording this at a certain point, I'm kind
- 16:08Speaker 8: of expecting and I'm hoping that the Patriots signed somebody
- 16:10Speaker 8: likes Stefon Gilmore. As what Evan said, that third rotational
- 16:13Speaker 8: outside guy. I'm not exactly sold entirely yet on Marcus
- 16:16Speaker 8: Jones in the slot. So I am a little bit
- 16:18Speaker 8: more open to some of these slot guys. Jarvis Brownley
- 16:22Speaker 8: from Louisville's another one that caught my eye. Good movement skills,
- 16:25Speaker 8: just aggressive kind of press man. And the last one
- 16:28Speaker 8: I'll just mention here in the cornerback class. Of course,
- 16:29Speaker 8: we got to get a TCU guy in is Josh Newton, who.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Over four thousand snaps.
- 16:34Speaker 8: Experienced guy again, another guy who played some inside placed
- 16:37Speaker 8: him outside. I think he just offers some versatility the guys.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Anybody else do you guys know Josh Newton's a good shout.
- 16:42Speaker 9: I watched him live at at that game that I
- 16:45Speaker 9: keep getting to reference somehow because we keep doing this
- 16:47Speaker 9: on purpose.
- 16:48Speaker 2: You should have expensed that whole thing.
- 16:49Speaker 9: Yeah right, I mean I should have been clocked in.
- 16:51Speaker 9: I mean, come on, yeah, No, he's a good player.
- 16:54Speaker 9: Maybe a little bit, you know, he needs to add
- 16:56Speaker 9: some place rank I would say to his game, but
- 16:58Speaker 9: I could see them. Look, Maximuntain's a good poll to
- 17:02Speaker 9: really good slot corner, I think as well. I mentioned
- 17:04Speaker 9: all these slot corners, him, Sandstrill. You know, those guys
- 17:07Speaker 9: definitely all fit that same bill. Aggressive players that can tackle,
- 17:11Speaker 9: play at the point of attack and the run game
- 17:13Speaker 9: and and then cover. So I think all these guys
- 17:15Speaker 9: can can do a lot of different things.
- 17:17Speaker 4: I also like DJ James from Auburn and Kaylen Carson
- 17:20Speaker 4: from wake Forest, you know, very good tacklers, which with
- 17:22Speaker 4: the potential rule change, will see how much that affects. Yeah,
- 17:26Speaker 4: exactly amazing.
- 17:30Speaker 1: It was like, what is that?
- 17:32Speaker 4: But maybe somebody in the later rounds just be you know,
- 17:35Speaker 4: not an instant day one starter, but somebody you can
- 17:37Speaker 4: develop on the back end.
- 17:39Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean I think we're all, you know,
- 17:41Speaker 2: kind of on the same page.
- 17:42Speaker 8: I mean, it's a later it's a day late, day
- 17:44Speaker 8: two at best, probably day three kind of position. Let's
- 17:47Speaker 8: move over to the safety group though, we're again like
- 17:49Speaker 8: in the gene kind of you know, a little bit
- 17:51Speaker 8: of a safety potential. But you know, just looking at
- 17:53Speaker 8: what the Patriots have. And as we were recording Patriots
- 17:57Speaker 8: Unfiltered previous to this, they just signed Aalen Hawkins as well,
- 18:01Speaker 8: so another you know, strong safety type.
- 18:02Speaker 2: They sure have a type. So that leads me to
- 18:05Speaker 2: continue to kind of pursue free safety types.
- 18:08Speaker 8: And you know, ballhawk guys. Maybe they don't have the
- 18:10Speaker 8: biggest size, but they've got the range. I'm just gonna
- 18:13Speaker 8: throw off the top. Cameron Kitchens from Miami, who I know.
- 18:16Speaker 2: I think you got to look at him.
- 18:17Speaker 8: Up close, right, Evan, Just I think for me, probably
- 18:20Speaker 8: gonna go too soon before the Patriots would actually want
- 18:22Speaker 8: to select him. But to me, that's one player that
- 18:24Speaker 8: you put him in, he would probably fit this rotation
- 18:26Speaker 8: pretty good.
- 18:27Speaker 9: Yeah, I think he's one of the only defensive players
- 18:29Speaker 9: that I look at that I would say if they
- 18:31Speaker 9: took Cam Kitchens with an early pick, I wouldn't completely riot, Like.
- 18:35Speaker 5: You know, I think I think a little bit there.
- 18:37Speaker 9: There's some other guys that I would maybe fit that bill.
- 18:40Speaker 9: But to me, if the Patriots touch a defensive player
- 18:43Speaker 9: before the sixty eighth pick in the draft, and we're
- 18:45Speaker 9: doing something wrong. But Cam Kitchens is one of those
- 18:47Speaker 9: guys that I think can definitely play that center field role.
- 18:51Speaker 9: And he didn't test very well at the combine and
- 18:53Speaker 9: that's going to be the knock on him. But in
- 18:55Speaker 9: a lot of ways, his combine and his whole just
- 18:58Speaker 9: precic projection profile reminds me a lot of Brian Branch
- 19:02Speaker 9: where you know, he didn't test very well either, but
- 19:04Speaker 9: he's just a dog like, he's just a football player
- 19:06Speaker 9: and you're gonna put him out there and you know
- 19:08Speaker 9: that he's gonna play football well, but maybe not be
- 19:11Speaker 9: an Olympian Like I don't really care, right, So Cam
- 19:14Speaker 9: Kitchen's definitely on the board for sure for the Patriots. Also,
- 19:18Speaker 9: Lonzo high Smith connection with him, so I think that
- 19:22Speaker 9: there's a lot to like about him and you put
- 19:24Speaker 9: him back there at the perch in center field, and
- 19:26Speaker 9: then you have Dugger in the box and Pepper's you know,
- 19:28Speaker 9: over the nickel or whatever. Now you're now you got
- 19:31Speaker 9: a complete secondary. Everybody's got a home that makes sense.
- 19:35Speaker 5: You got Chris, you got some safeties for us.
- 19:36Speaker 1: The only one that jumped out me was Kaylen Bullock,
- 19:39Speaker 1: other center fielder. He's I mean, he's a solid guy.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Couldn't cover three, cover one. Uh, you know, you just
- 19:46Speaker 1: need a guy then kind of oversee things in that defense.
- 19:48Speaker 1: I think you know that was sort of a Dugger.
- 19:51Speaker 4: Role every place, trying to knock the ball out, which
- 19:53Speaker 4: is unreal.
- 19:54Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, he's We were talking to Jordan Reed at
- 19:57Speaker 9: the combine about this and I said, who are the
- 19:59Speaker 9: center fiel in this draft and he said, Cam Kitchens
- 20:02Speaker 9: is tier one and then Bullet from USC is tier two.
- 20:05Speaker 9: So he's definitely some of one of those players that
- 20:08Speaker 9: flashes on film that sideline the sideline ability from center field.
- 20:12Speaker 4: So the two things, first of all, love Javon Bullard
- 20:14Speaker 4: from Georgia. I mean, that guy's a beast.
- 20:17Speaker 9: That guy's gonna kill somebody on the field, and.
- 20:20Speaker 4: That's what you want with your safety. And he's going
- 20:21Speaker 4: to be against the best of the best in the SEC.
- 20:24Speaker 4: But also want to talk about its kind of interesting
- 20:26Speaker 4: how this year there were so many like high end
- 20:28Speaker 4: safeties just on the free agent market. So it's really
- 20:30Speaker 4: going to make you wonder how these teams value drafting
- 20:32Speaker 4: one of these players in this position because it's kind
- 20:34Speaker 4: of the running back of the defense almost of some
- 20:36Speaker 4: of the hits these guys take.
- 20:38Speaker 9: So yeah, it's interesting how the Patriots seemed to zig
- 20:40Speaker 9: in that category. They seem to still value safeties Lester
- 20:44Speaker 9: to the league not so much, and you know they're
- 20:46Speaker 9: willing to transition Tag Dugger and you know stuff like that.
- 20:49Speaker 9: So the last one that I would I would mention
- 20:52Speaker 9: is from Utah, who another guy that can play multiple.
- 20:58Speaker 5: Run positions and play some running back.
- 21:00Speaker 9: I play both sides of the ball, play special teams,
- 21:02Speaker 9: plays deep safety, play strong safety. So if there's any
- 21:06Speaker 9: Belichick still in that that draft room, I'm telling you
- 21:09Speaker 9: that that Vika is going to be high on their
- 21:11Speaker 9: board and a lot of teams at the combine, I
- 21:14Speaker 9: think at his pro day he's going to have asked
- 21:16Speaker 9: him to work out at running back and do some
- 21:18Speaker 9: running back drills as well, so they see him as
- 21:21Speaker 9: somebody that can play both sides of the ball and
- 21:23Speaker 9: that that screams Patriots.
- 21:25Speaker 8: So it is if it still goes up, just I'll
- 21:27Speaker 8: throw up a couple and you know, Jalen Simpson's a guy,
- 21:29Speaker 8: a later guy, feel like they could potentially be that
- 21:31Speaker 8: free saft. He's just really small and I want to
- 21:33Speaker 8: like him more than I do, but I threw him
- 21:35Speaker 8: in there. Last one I would just say is Tyler
- 21:37Speaker 8: Rowans from Texas Tech, who's a low experienced kind of
- 21:40Speaker 8: guy only at twelve starts, but a plus special teams
- 21:43Speaker 8: kind of a guy, hard hitter, you know, just kind
- 21:45Speaker 8: of like we're looking day three here, we're looking for
- 21:47Speaker 8: developmental guys who can play special teams. There were just
- 21:50Speaker 8: a couple that kind of jumped out at me and
- 21:53Speaker 8: anybody else. You guys got share.
- 21:54Speaker 4: I had new been one of the top ones just
- 21:56Speaker 4: as a ball hawk, but I don't think that he's
- 21:58Speaker 4: gonna be in Foxboro anytime soon.
- 21:59Speaker 9: So yeah, he seems to be the consensus number one
- 22:02Speaker 9: safety now that Kitchens didn't have a great combine, But
- 22:05Speaker 9: I'm still on the Kitchens bandwagon. I don't want to
- 22:08Speaker 9: overreact the film is too good to just sit there
- 22:10Speaker 9: and say that because he had a bad day in
- 22:13Speaker 9: Indy that he's not.
- 22:13Speaker 1: A good player.
- 22:14Speaker 9: So those are the two guys that are probably gonna
- 22:16Speaker 9: be near the top of the safety class. But no,
- 22:19Speaker 9: there's no Antoine Winfield Junior. There's no you know, top
- 22:23Speaker 9: dog in this safety class. I wouldn't say that was
- 22:25Speaker 9: a consensus, you know, first round type of guy.
- 22:28Speaker 8: All right, well, that's gonna do it for our defensive
- 22:30Speaker 8: back segment. And now we're gonna switch to a bigger
- 22:32Speaker 8: picture thing, which I had a chance to talk with
- 22:34Speaker 8: Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL notework, really getting a breakdown
- 22:37Speaker 8: of all the Patriots draft needs, what they're gonna do
- 22:39Speaker 8: with three, the trade down possibilities, late round fits. Went
- 22:42Speaker 8: through all that with DJ and check that out now.
- 22:45Speaker 8: All right, so excited to be joined by Daniel Jeremiah.
- 22:47Speaker 8: Now DJ, Patriots sitting at three. Overall, it seems like
- 22:51Speaker 8: we're kind of I know you took Jayden Daniels in
- 22:53Speaker 8: your latest mock draft. Everybody I think is kind of
- 22:55Speaker 8: accepted Drake may or jay and Daniels. That seems like
- 22:57Speaker 8: the most popular pick. Just what do you see in
- 22:59Speaker 8: those two. What could fans here expect if if you
- 23:02Speaker 8: were to drop one of those guys. Do you think
- 23:03Speaker 8: they're ready to come in and play right away? Do
- 23:05Speaker 8: you think they have to sit?
- 23:07Speaker 3: I think they could both come in and play. I
- 23:09Speaker 3: think for sure, let's start with Jayden Daniels, and let's
- 23:12Speaker 3: start with that one. He's started a zillion games, started
- 23:15Speaker 3: fifty plus games in college. He's older, he's mature, he's
- 23:18Speaker 3: been through adversity, so you know, those are the things
- 23:21Speaker 3: you kind of look at when you're you know, okay,
- 23:23Speaker 3: this guy can be able to survive some of these
- 23:26Speaker 3: these speed bumps along their way here, I think he
- 23:28Speaker 3: would be fine. I think also with him the athleticism
- 23:31Speaker 3: to be able to buy time and as he gets
- 23:33Speaker 3: more comfortable in the passing game that they're going to
- 23:37Speaker 3: deploy there. I think you've you've got ways to generate
- 23:39Speaker 3: offense as he's still gonna, you know, even though he's
- 23:42Speaker 3: played a lot of college games, learn how to read
- 23:44Speaker 3: NFL defenses and get adjusted there. I think his legs
- 23:46Speaker 3: by him some time, so I think you could absolutely
- 23:49Speaker 3: get him out there. You know what you like about him, look,
- 23:53Speaker 3: the accuracy, especially over the top He's got unbelievable touch.
- 23:58Speaker 3: He played with confidence this year. I mean they would
- 24:00Speaker 3: so many slot fades that they hit. They were just
- 24:03Speaker 3: you know, one after another after another, perfect over the
- 24:05Speaker 3: shoulder throws. And then when things aren't there, you know,
- 24:08Speaker 3: he can go make things happen with his legs. So
- 24:10Speaker 3: that's him as a player. Why I think he'd be
- 24:12Speaker 3: fine going right into the mix.
- 24:13Speaker 7: Drake.
- 24:14Speaker 3: May you know prototype you get the big physical athletic dude,
- 24:20Speaker 3: who can you know? To me, he can make every
- 24:23Speaker 3: type of throw. And I mean that not just like
- 24:25Speaker 3: velocity wise, he has the arm strength to do that.
- 24:27Speaker 3: I mean you'll see him layer the ball, He'll take,
- 24:29Speaker 3: take some some steam off the ball, touch it up.
- 24:32Speaker 3: He can get those over underthrows going. He got into
- 24:35Speaker 3: some bad habits this year, some pressure. He's drifting away,
- 24:39Speaker 3: a little bit better job of getting his feet set.
- 24:42Speaker 3: But I don't think I've seen anything from him, and
- 24:44Speaker 3: I don't believe I've seen anything from him that would say, Okay,
- 24:47Speaker 3: this guy really needs a lot of time. There's some
- 24:49Speaker 3: things to work on, some things to clean up. But again,
- 24:52Speaker 3: another realm mentally and physically tough kid.
- 24:54Speaker 5: So if we don't take a quarterback there.
- 24:56Speaker 8: You know, everybody's kind of considering do they trade down,
- 24:58Speaker 8: and it's I think it's a you know, with the
- 24:59Speaker 8: whole at tackle, at receiver.
- 25:02Speaker 5: I mean, these classes are loaded at both those positions.
- 25:04Speaker 8: Yeah, I think you trade down, though, it's just it's
- 25:05Speaker 8: hard to see where they're picking thirty four those tackles
- 25:09Speaker 8: are gonna kind of go. It feels like, you know,
- 25:10Speaker 8: even some of the receivers. I know that it's a
- 25:12Speaker 8: deep class, but what do you see maybe be a
- 25:14Speaker 8: package that the Patriots will consider to trade down with,
- 25:17Speaker 8: and you know what, it makes sense maybe for them
- 25:19Speaker 8: to try to hit that tackle class near the top
- 25:21Speaker 8: or or some of those receivers.
- 25:23Speaker 3: Well, there's a lot of different scenarios you can kick around.
- 25:25Speaker 3: I mean, you don't have to potentially go that far.
- 25:28Speaker 3: I mean, if you look at the Giants as a
- 25:29Speaker 3: team that's been mentioned as a quarterback team, whoever their
- 25:33Speaker 3: guy is, that could be something where if you're you know,
- 25:36Speaker 3: if you're the Patriots, you're like, you know, we really
- 25:37Speaker 3: like four quarterbacks, but we also have these other needs
- 25:40Speaker 3: that you mentioned. If we were to go to six,
- 25:43Speaker 3: there's a chance, you know, there's there's a you know
- 25:46Speaker 3: there's a chance maybe the fourth quarterback is there. If not,
- 25:50Speaker 3: you have to be comfortable with the fact of, Okay,
- 25:51Speaker 3: well I'm gonna get you know, I might have a
- 25:53Speaker 3: chance to get the best offensive tackle in the draft,
- 25:56Speaker 3: or I can get one of the top two wide
- 25:57Speaker 3: receivers in this draft. That's that, you know, that's option
- 26:00Speaker 3: while picking up all these other resources to fill some
- 26:02Speaker 3: of these holes. So that would one that would be
- 26:05Speaker 3: intriguing to me. I think everybody's mentioned the Vikings as
- 26:07Speaker 3: a team that would, you know, love to move up.
- 26:09Speaker 3: They acquired that second first round pick from Houston to
- 26:13Speaker 3: be able to go do that. So eleven, you're gonna
- 26:15Speaker 3: miss out on top three wide outs they're gone. You're
- 26:18Speaker 3: gonna probably miss out in the first two, maybe even
- 26:20Speaker 3: three tackles. So yeah, that one I would I mean
- 26:24Speaker 3: to me, it's sticking pick is the smartest thing to do.
- 26:27Speaker 3: And if for some reason you are going to trade down,
- 26:29Speaker 3: I don't know that I would want to go beyond six.
- 26:31Speaker 7: If I was New England.
- 26:32Speaker 8: You mentioned four quarterbacks. JJ McCarthy kind of you know,
- 26:35Speaker 8: getting a little buzz about him. Why do you think
- 26:37Speaker 8: that is? What about him? Is his kind of made
- 26:39Speaker 8: him rise here after the combine, Well.
- 26:42Speaker 3: I think there's you know, a lot of times we
- 26:44Speaker 3: talk about guys rising, guys haven't had a chance to
- 26:46Speaker 3: do him yet. And I think he wasn't one of
- 26:49Speaker 3: those name brand players that people assume would come out
- 26:51Speaker 3: this year over last offseason. So if you're a decision
- 26:54Speaker 3: maker on personnel side, you probably hadn't watched him over
- 26:58Speaker 3: the summer, and then you get to this year, You've
- 27:00Speaker 3: got your whole host of candidates for quarterbacks with the
- 27:04Speaker 3: assumption is he's probably going to go back to school.
- 27:06Speaker 3: If you're loosely following it, you're like, yeah, he's not
- 27:08Speaker 3: posting really big numbers, so he's maybe, you know, kind
- 27:11Speaker 3: of hiding in playing sight on the number one team
- 27:13Speaker 3: in the country. But I think once the season ended,
- 27:17Speaker 3: he declares, I think then people had a chance.
- 27:18Speaker 7: To go back through. It takes a while.
- 27:21Speaker 3: I was talking about this somebody the other day. It takes
- 27:23Speaker 3: a while to get comfortable with him. It's like an
- 27:26Speaker 3: acquired taste where you know, you watch a game, you
- 27:30Speaker 3: watch another game like, Okay, I don't know, has he
- 27:31Speaker 3: done much here. I've saw a couple of good throws,
- 27:33Speaker 3: But then when you piece the whole thing together, specifically
- 27:36Speaker 3: when you do the cutups, when you watch like every
- 27:38Speaker 3: third and seven plus throw and you okay, this is
- 27:42Speaker 3: this is where you're facing challenging defenses that no, you're
- 27:44Speaker 3: going to throw the football and you see him, he deals.
- 27:47Speaker 3: He his third and seven reel is good or better
- 27:49Speaker 3: than any quarterback in this draft class. So that's why
- 27:52Speaker 3: I think it took a little time. It wasn't just
- 27:54Speaker 3: a cut and dry, easy evaluation.
- 27:57Speaker 8: I mentioned kind of the three big needs quarterback, tackle,
- 28:00Speaker 8: wide receiver. It just seems hard to get all three.
- 28:02Speaker 8: Patriots just signed kJ Osbourne. You know they have some
- 28:05Speaker 8: depth there. They got nine receivers on the ross. I
- 28:07Speaker 8: think what's really lacking is an outside threat. And I
- 28:09Speaker 8: guess the question really is if you don't get a
- 28:11Speaker 8: receiver there in Day one, a d Mitchell, those kind
- 28:13Speaker 8: of guys late first maybe that you'd have to trade
- 28:15Speaker 8: back up for. Are there any fits you maybe see
- 28:17Speaker 8: that could be that developmental outside guy that you could
- 28:20Speaker 8: get in the second, third round kind of moving.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Forward, There's a ton of wideouts when you go through
- 28:26Speaker 3: this draft, and I think it's been that way for
- 28:28Speaker 3: really the last several drafts.
- 28:29Speaker 7: It's just what the college game has given you.
- 28:31Speaker 3: So you know, you talk about a pick at thirty four,
- 28:34Speaker 3: top of the second round. You know, one of the
- 28:37Speaker 3: guys who's who's you know, got a lot of love
- 28:40Speaker 3: around the league is pearsall from Florida, and he's somebody
- 28:43Speaker 3: who could play inside, could play outside, could do a
- 28:44Speaker 3: lot of different things there. Troy Franklin would give him
- 28:46Speaker 3: a speed merchant on the outside there from Oregon who's
- 28:50Speaker 3: a little lean, but he has a lot of juice,
- 28:53Speaker 3: a lot of explosiveness. But I mean, we could literally
- 28:55Speaker 3: go through the entire every round of the draft and
- 28:57Speaker 3: I can give you three names that are going to
- 28:59Speaker 3: be there. It's just there's a million of them. So
- 29:01Speaker 3: and that's one of the things that I'm struggling with
- 29:04Speaker 3: forecast in this first top ten is yes, I have
- 29:07Speaker 3: three receivers the top five players in this draft class.
- 29:11Speaker 3: And I'm sitting there going like, gosh, I wouldn't want
- 29:12Speaker 3: to pass one of these three guys. But then I'm like, yeah,
- 29:14Speaker 3: you could wait until the second, third, fourth round and
- 29:16Speaker 3: they're still starting caliber players there. Whereas you know, tackles,
- 29:20Speaker 3: even though it's a deep group, you know, historically here
- 29:24Speaker 3: they're gone. At the end of the first round, you're
- 29:27Speaker 3: it's hard to find starting tackles. They're just not going
- 29:29Speaker 3: to be there. So that's why to me, that informs
- 29:32Speaker 3: the decision a little bit and you go, Okay, maybe
- 29:34Speaker 3: I have this receiver a little bit over this tackle
- 29:36Speaker 3: or maybe a little bit over this, you know, edge
- 29:38Speaker 3: rusher or receiver. When you look at the receivers with
- 29:41Speaker 3: versus EDG dreshers and tackles, it's like, man, I can
- 29:43Speaker 3: get receivers anywhere. So that'll be fascinating.
- 29:47Speaker 8: Just generally, do you what do you feel like when
- 29:48Speaker 8: we get into Day three, late day two, Day three,
- 29:51Speaker 8: where where's the value there?
- 29:52Speaker 7: Like?
- 29:52Speaker 5: What are the position groups?
- 29:53Speaker 8: You feel like a have that depth that I mean,
- 29:55Speaker 8: you know, regardless of needs, just the what are the
- 29:57Speaker 8: strongest positions there in the Day three Yeah.
- 29:59Speaker 3: I've I think there's corners. I think it's a good
- 30:01Speaker 3: group of Day three corners. I also think the running
- 30:03Speaker 3: backs are all going to get pushed down. We don't
- 30:06Speaker 3: have a lot of separation there. You know, one team's
- 30:09Speaker 3: top running back might be another team's eight rink running back.
- 30:11Speaker 3: It's just there's a clump of them. So you don't
- 30:14Speaker 3: see them going the first round. There's a chance we
- 30:16Speaker 3: potentially don't even see one go in the second round.
- 30:19Speaker 3: And then now I think you see a run in
- 30:21Speaker 3: the third, and then I think even to early on
- 30:23Speaker 3: Day three, that fourth, fifth round, I think there's a
- 30:25Speaker 3: good number of backs and that's kind of the sweet
- 30:28Speaker 3: spot for him in this draft. So corners, running backs,
- 30:31Speaker 3: those would be the two.
- 30:32Speaker 7: To me. I think once you get in day three,
- 30:34Speaker 7: I think you can get starters.
- 30:36Speaker 8: So last question one for you just obviously turnover this year,
- 30:39Speaker 8: major turnover at the coaching position, Alex van Pelt coming
- 30:41Speaker 8: in as the offensive coordinator, Drop Mayo head coach, game
- 30:45Speaker 8: plan defense. They've always been pretty flexible on that side
- 30:47Speaker 8: of the ball. Just overall, any fits that you see,
- 30:49Speaker 8: I know the Patriots are evolving, we don't know for
- 30:51Speaker 8: sure what they're gonna do, but assuming they kind of
- 30:52Speaker 8: stick in real at least defensively what we've seen from
- 30:55Speaker 8: Van Pelt, any guys out there that you think are kind.
- 30:57Speaker 7: Of fit from an offensive standpoint.
- 30:59Speaker 5: Yeah, either side of the ball, offense or defense.
- 31:02Speaker 3: I mean to me, I know that obviously Bill's not there,
- 31:05Speaker 3: but I think defensively, I don't really see anything changing.
- 31:07Speaker 3: I mean, they're always you know, I think that's ingrained
- 31:10Speaker 3: in their culture and who they are. They're going to
- 31:12Speaker 3: value you know, smart, tough, vers little players. I think
- 31:14Speaker 3: they're maybe trying to get a little little faster, and
- 31:18Speaker 3: to me, you can do that not only you know,
- 31:20Speaker 3: we think about the secondary. I think again just linebackers.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Just get more speed, as much speed as you can
- 31:24Speaker 3: get out there on the field, and then offensively, the
- 31:27Speaker 3: identity to me is going to be about, Okay, is
- 31:30Speaker 3: are we going to stick and pick? If it's the
- 31:33Speaker 3: third guy, uh is going to be a quarterback? Then
- 31:35Speaker 3: to me, I think, you know, I think I like
- 31:37Speaker 3: the fact of bringing Hunter back to me, I have
- 31:40Speaker 3: a young quarterback.
- 31:40Speaker 7: I want easy completions.
- 31:42Speaker 3: So even though we would like a big, a big
- 31:44Speaker 3: guy in the outside of flyer, I think it'd almost
- 31:47Speaker 3: be more valuable just adding quickness and guys that can
- 31:49Speaker 3: uncover and guys that can run after the catch and
- 31:51Speaker 3: try and take some of that off of this guy
- 31:53Speaker 3: who you know, you've got a bridge quarterback in place
- 31:56Speaker 3: so he doesn't have to go out there week one.
- 31:57Speaker 3: But I would imagine if they stick and pick, we're
- 31:59Speaker 3: going to see that guy student later.
- 32:01Speaker 5: Awesome, DJ, thanks so much for the time. Really appreciate it.
- 32:04Speaker 7: Hey, no problem, good to catch up.
- 32:06Speaker 4: All right, guys, we had a good show there. Defensive backs,
- 32:08Speaker 4: all good stuff. Next week we're gonna we're gonna wrap
- 32:12Speaker 4: up the defensive side of the ball, focus on the
- 32:14Speaker 4: front seven. Then we get to get into the offense
- 32:16Speaker 4: and all the good stuff that everybody's looking for. So,
- 32:18Speaker 4: once again, thank you for tuning in to the Patriots
- 32:19Speaker 4: Draft countdown.
