- 0:00First time out in the O'reilly's car thing I'm looking forward to
- 0:04the most is probably, you know, getting past the 1st 10 laps and
- 0:10getting comfortable and having the support of the RCR guys and
- 0:15seeing what that's like. I've been given so much data
- 0:18outside of the racetrack. I'm excited to apply that, see
- 0:24where my improvements stand and see how competitive I am and,
- 0:29you know, drive that car some more.
- 0:31Had so much fun driving that car and hopefully make the Tommy's
- 0:35Express team happy and, and just do a good job.
- 0:38Stay out of the way and enjoy racing and.
- 0:42And watching the video, there are a lot of people in your ear.
- 0:45Danny Stockman, Ty Dillon, I assume Dale Junior is giving you
- 0:50advice. How do you know who to listen
- 0:51to? Yeah, that's a good question,
- 0:55Bob. And by the way, Bob, you did a
- 0:57great job covering this stuff. Watch a lot of your your posts.
- 1:03Who to listen to. You know, I, I kind of have to
- 1:07collectively listen to everybody.
- 1:10You know, the really what I definitely listen to the most is
- 1:14when we looked at Jesse's data, you know, that's kind of the
- 1:18most definitive advice you could get is like, hey, this was way
- 1:24faster than you. So you know, that's some rock
- 1:28solid evidence for me to go off of.
- 1:32And you know, I did kind of on the other hand though, listen to
- 1:35everybody in the fact that, you know, Ty said, hey, let's
- 1:39tighten the car up and try this. And I tried it.
- 1:42And then Danny said, let's loosen the car up.
- 1:45And then we did that and we tried it and I ended up liking
- 1:48the car looser. So, you know, we're kind of
- 1:52listening to a lot of opinions, but the proof was in the pudding
- 1:55when the car felt the most comfortable and was turning the
- 1:59best lap times. So I that's what I'm going off
- 2:03of is what yields the best results.
- 2:06And now I'm asking, do you listen to the outside noise of
- 2:10whether you know whether he should be allowed to race?
- 2:12Should he not be allowed to race just because you, you know that?
- 2:17Do you want to know? Do you want to hear what people
- 2:19are saying, or do you feel like that's better for you to ignore
- 2:22that? I mean, Bob, I think, you know
- 2:26at this point that I'm pretty in tune with what's going on in the
- 2:29social media world. Like, you know, this is my job.
- 2:32My job is probably more similar to yours than closer to the
- 2:39drivers. Like, you know, I, I am a a
- 2:42social media guy. That's what how I got in this
- 2:45position. So I see it a lot and it's
- 2:48pretty, you know, closer to Daytona when I had the big screw
- 2:52up in the truck, you know, I was feeling a little down on myself
- 2:55about that. At this point, the record is so
- 2:59broken of people still talking about it.
- 3:01I don't care as much. You know, at the end of the day,
- 3:05all these guys can say whatever they want about me.
- 3:07But if Richard Childress called them and said, hey, you want to
- 3:10come drive our car, all of them would have taken that
- 3:13opportunity, too. And if NASCAR is letting me do
- 3:16it, I'm in. I'm here, you know, and no one
- 3:20can save me but myself at this point.
- 3:22Once I get on that track on Saturday, it's up to me.
- 3:26So, you know, they can complain as much as they'd like, but it's
- 3:31happening and it's for two years, so they better buckle up.
- 3:38Thank you. And thanks, Cletus for the time.
- 3:40You mentioned a minute ago that you've been given bunch of data
- 3:44outside of the car, outside of the track.
- 3:47And you said last year, I think after one of your ARCA races
- 3:50that you wish you had done more pre race preparation in a
- 3:53simulator. How does what you've been
- 3:56through over these past couple of weeks or months compared to
- 3:58what you've done or what you did last year?
- 4:01And without giving away trade secrets, what kind of data were
- 4:04you given? You know, the data that has been
- 4:09the most helpful is just the overlays of the in car footage
- 4:15and what I am doing, you know, wrong.
- 4:19I can literally watch every lap from my test with the Motech
- 4:25data laid on top and then also see the lap times and it just
- 4:30becomes so obvious where the mistakes are.
- 4:33It's it's night and day where you know, these issues are
- 4:38happening for me and you know, by the end of that test, I was
- 4:42feeling so comfortable in the car, more comfortable than I've
- 4:45ever felt in a stock car. This is kind of a cool story to
- 4:48like, you know how I said I I've been slacked, I slacked on the
- 4:51simulator last year. I mentioned that I, I wanted to
- 4:55make sure this year that didn't happen.
- 4:57So I spent, you know, once this opportunity popped up and I knew
- 5:02that we were likely going to race rocking him.
- 5:05I just was, I committed myself to the simulator as much as
- 5:08possible. So about a month before the
- 5:11test, I got a little over a month, maybe closer to two
- 5:14months. I, I got on the simulator
- 5:16working really hard on Rockingham in the O'reilly's
- 5:19car. And like over the course of that
- 5:22time, I got to about a 24-O on the simulator and that was like
- 5:27all out. That was the best I could do.
- 5:30I go to the test. The car is actually very similar
- 5:33to the simulator. I learned a ton that day.
- 5:37I went back to my simulator the next day and and within 13 laps
- 5:41I picked up 4/10. So the number that I said over
- 5:46the course of whatever two months, I knocked 4/10 off of it
- 5:50in 13 laps. So like the data that these guys
- 5:55are giving me is making it easier for me and it's to see
- 5:59those numbers just pop up on the simulator like that just blew my
- 6:02mind. You know, the, the, the data
- 6:06just makes it all make sense, just validates, you know, what I
- 6:13need to do and what I don't need to do.
- 6:15So that's great. Hi Kalidas, thanks again for
- 6:18taking the time to do this man. Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:20Yes. I'm happy to do media days with
- 6:23you guys. You guys helped me tremendously
- 6:26so. Well, we'd love to hear it.
- 6:29I wanted to ask, what does it mean for you to get this
- 6:32opportunity specifically at Rockingham?
- 6:36Any nostalgia or anything connected to this track
- 6:39specifically? Are you happy that NASCAR is
- 6:41here? Just anything about Rockingham
- 6:44specifically? The only thing that makes me
- 6:47happy about the Rockingham, you know, that specific location,
- 6:52the tracks really cool. But I'm, I'm happy that I got to
- 6:55do my test there too, before I get to go to the race.
- 6:59You know, that's that I find a lot of comfort in the fact that
- 7:03I've already spun a lot of laps there and know the car and how
- 7:07it feels there. So no, nothing else than that.
- 7:12I didn't really know much about the Rock until my truck test so.
- 7:17Cool. Got it.
- 7:18Thanks. All right.
- 7:21Our next question will go to. Pat Jaggers.
- 7:23Go ahead, Pat. Hey Aquitus, when?
- 7:27Just really curious, just thinking about your test, you
- 7:29know how many laps you ran total at Rockingham preparing for this
- 7:34opportunity. I don't know.
- 7:38I think it was some, it was like maybe 250 laps in the test.
- 7:44And the reason why I asked, just curious, where do you what at
- 7:47what point do you felt, feel at one point do you feel like you
- 7:51actually started to really get a hang of it and you were really
- 7:53starting to to make speed? You know, if you watch the
- 8:00video, like my fastest lap was one of my last laps.
- 8:06So that's not a good sign in that in those last few laps, I
- 8:13was feeling really comfortable, like, and I figured out the, the
- 8:17corner speed, you know, in the middle of the turn is really
- 8:20where I've been screwing up. And yeah, the last 20-30 laps,
- 8:27that was when I felt the best. So, yeah, if, if what you're
- 8:30asking is did I was there something left to be desired
- 8:34from that test day? There absolutely was because I
- 8:36would have, I would have loved to spend 200 more laps that day.
- 8:40I was just getting started when we had to call it.
- 8:44Gotcha. And the next question for you is
- 8:46pit stops. Live pit stops are really hard
- 8:48to simulate. Rockingham Speedway has a very
- 8:51unique pit Rd. As you have seen, the exit is
- 8:55out of four, excuse me, the entrance is out of four and the
- 8:58exit is in the middle of turns 1 and two.
- 9:00It How much of a challenge do you think that's going to be on
- 9:02race day trying to navigate live pit stops at Rockford?
- 9:06I love arcade Unique. I love arcade because we don't
- 9:09have to rush to pit stops. You know, I did, I did a
- 9:13significant amount of practice getting in off of four.
- 9:17I was worried I was like, there's no way these guys can
- 9:19stop, but actually you can. I feel pretty decent about it,
- 9:24you know, as long as I don't miss the sign.
- 9:26And here's the deal too. It's not like I'm going to be
- 9:30racing for first or second place.
- 9:31So I, I can take a little bit of time on pit Rd. and stay, you
- 9:35know, make sure I stay out of other competitors ways, get into
- 9:39my box without, you know, risking any crazy, you know,
- 9:48situations. I, I can take my time a little
- 9:50bit. So I'm not too worried about
- 9:52that. And we've done, you know, the
- 9:53necessary practice to make sure those are successful.
- 9:57Thank. You appreciate you.
- 9:59Thank you. Yeah, how much?
- 10:01Did. If any you think that, wow, this
- 10:05is a lot more, There's so much more data than I thought goes
- 10:08into it. There's so much more that goes
- 10:10into racing an O'Reilly car versus what I thought before I
- 10:16even started getting in the Narca car.
- 10:20Well, Biff told me a long time ago, you know, because when I
- 10:24told him I wanted to race like, you know, Cup level Daytona 500,
- 10:29he told me the skill gap is massive.
- 10:31And I really, you know, the way he said it, he's like in ARCA
- 10:36there's going to be 10 cars that are really competitive.
- 10:40In truck, there's going to be 20 cars that are really
- 10:42competitive. In O'reilly's there will be
- 10:45about 25. And then, you know, in Cup
- 10:48there's like, you know, 30 to 35 cars that are competitive.
- 10:51So going into, you know, when I got this opportunity to go up to
- 10:55O'reilly's, which in all reality I was not looking for, you know,
- 10:59I love ARCA and I love the level I'm at there.
- 11:03I'm really happy with it. When I got this opportunity from
- 11:07RCR, I knew I was going in over my head, you know, just like all
- 11:11these people who are scrutinizing me think.
- 11:15But like I said earlier, I'm not going to shy away from a great
- 11:20opportunity such as racing for Richard Childress Racing.
- 11:24So yeah, I'm in over my head and driving that car I thought would
- 11:30was going to be scarier and worse than it was.
- 11:34You know, I was like thinking, OK, now I'm really going to have
- 11:38to try my absolute hardest. But when I got in that RCR car,
- 11:42I'm going to, I'm just going to be honest, it was the the most
- 11:47comfortable. I've felt like I felt more in
- 11:50control than ever. And you know, I wasn't running
- 11:54like within the pace, that's for sure.
- 11:57I was definitely, I have some time to go, but gosh, I'm
- 12:02already feeling really good about the fact that that car
- 12:05just drive so Dang good. So yeah, I, I realized that the
- 12:10gap is big, but I, it hasn't changed a ton.
- 12:14My opinion on that hasn't changed a ton since driving the
- 12:16car. I still feel like I'm outgunned
- 12:19significantly, but my outlook on on progressing enough to be
- 12:26competitive one day is the same. I guess, I guess I wanted to ask
- 12:31like is there more technology and more go into how these cars
- 12:37and these races are than what you thought before you ever
- 12:40started racing? OK.
- 12:42Sorry, I kind of die straight away from your question a little
- 12:45bit there. Yeah, the technology is crazy.
- 12:48I did not expect four people to show up specifically for data.
- 12:54I'm like, there's more laptops there than I've seen in a long
- 12:57time. And that was all just to assess
- 13:02what I'm doing wrong. I couldn't believe it.
- 13:06There was a whole rolling toolbox that just had live data
- 13:10from the car. It's incredible.
- 13:12I mean, the the data ingest is insane.
- 13:18And then they have to translate it to me.
- 13:22So it's, it's a project. I didn't realize it was that
- 13:24much. And I was really shocked this
- 13:26week when I heard Brad Kozlowski.
- 13:30He was talking about Driving Cup when we were at Talladega.
- 13:33And he's like, yeah, we spend all week watching tape.
- 13:37And I'm like, Brad Kozlowski watches tape.
- 13:40I mean, if he's watching tape, it must be hard because that guy
- 13:45has, you know, 20 some years of experience and he still watches
- 13:51tape to be competitive. So like, that's just a small
- 13:54example of how far all these teams and drivers go to be
- 13:59competitive. That that's kind of mind blowing
- 14:02to me still for sure, Bob. Well, I noticed how they went.
- 14:05They scanned the laptop very quickly.
- 14:07So we can except for when you were looking at Jesse Love's
- 14:10data for a minute there, there wasn't much you they were going
- 14:13to show on on the of what was on the laptops.
- 14:17Yeah, they, they're actually pretty, pretty free about it.
- 14:21I was surprised. You know, I think that data is
- 14:24available to everybody, right, on what's that program called?
- 14:30There's some program that all the teams can share data
- 14:33through, right? Yeah.
- 14:35I don't know what it's called. And maybe because of your rookie
- 14:38testing, they do give out some of that data, I imagine.
- 14:42I think from the races you can actually.
- 14:44Oh, from the races, yeah. Yeah, so they said, hey, this
- 14:47data is already public, you know, public to the other teams,
- 14:51so you're good to show it on video.
- 14:54And RCR has been really cool so far about me filming stuff.
- 14:59You know, I think this is kind of like a new thing for
- 15:01everybody, right, Is putting out stuff on the Internet.
- 15:07And I got to admit, RCR has been awesome about letting me be
- 15:11pretty, pretty open about this stuff, so that's great.
- 15:14Which was what I really hoped would happen.
- 15:18Thanks again. Thank you, Bob.
- 15:20I just wanted to ask from like a respect standpoint, what would
- 15:23you prefer us to call you? I know on your hard card it was
- 15:27a mix up or mash up of your names.
- 15:29What would you actually prefer us to like address you as?
- 15:33Cletus is best. It's just easier for everybody.
- 15:37I mean, they can. There's a lot of confusion when
- 15:39Garrett comes into play. Cletus is just way easier for
- 15:43everybody. Gotcha.
- 15:44All right. Thank you.
- 15:46Well, there it is everybody. Great press conference from
- 15:49Cletus McFarland. Want to thank everybody at
- 15:52NASCAR Media for putting that out.
- 15:54Lot of good insight. Cletus.
- 15:56As you saw, he's an open book. Can't wait to see him coming up
- 16:00this weekend, Easter weekend at Rockingham.
- 16:03It's going to be fun. Charlie Marlowe for Kenny
- 16:06Wallace Media.
