- 0:00What if the next step toward your dream requires you to stop doing
- 0:04something that you've been determined to make work? You can believe
- 0:07deeply in your vision and still need a different approach. But sometimes
- 0:11we become so committed to the plan that we stop noticing
- 0:15where it is taking us. Today, we're talking about when to keep
- 0:19going, when to change course, and how to stay rooted in who you're becoming
- 0:23while allowing yourself a different path forward.
- 0:26Welcome to the Revolution of Purpose podcast. I'm your host,
- 0:29John Streit, and each week we bring you conversations with thought
- 0:33leaders, entrepreneurs, and individuals who have aligned their life
- 0:37with purpose and created extraordinary results. So I'm gonna live through it and accept
- 0:41it radically with grace and hope and love. I mean, I would
- 0:46be proud to be in this council. It was an honor. I had so much
- 0:48fun. Tune in every Monday for the Revolution of Purpose solo show and every Thursday
- 0:53for Revolution of Purpose Conversations. Welcome back to the Revolution of Purpose
- 0:57podcast. I am John Streit, and I am so glad you're here. There is a
- 1:00kind of determination that serves you beautifully.
- 1:03It helps you keep your commitments. It gets you through the early stages when
- 1:08you're learning, growing, and doing things that feel unfamiliar.
- 1:11Every meaningful goal will ask something of you.
- 1:14But determination needs discernment because you can
- 1:18work hard at an approach that no longer serves the
- 1:22life that you're trying to create. You can keep repeating a routine just
- 1:26because it's familiar. You can continue offering something in the same way
- 1:29because that's how you started. You can pour time into
- 1:33a strategy because you've already invested so much in it.
- 1:37And then eventually you have to ask an honest question.
- 1:41Am I doing this because it's moving me toward my vision or
- 1:45because I've become attached to doing it this way?
- 1:48That question can open a door, especially if you are a business
- 1:52owner, an entrepreneur, someone who takes pride in following
- 1:55through, someone who's trying to launch their own dream and really pursue
- 2:00the things that they've thought about deeply for, for years.
- 2:03Maybe you may have learned to associate changing course with giving up.
- 2:07So you just keep pushing. You just keep hustling harder.
- 2:11You, you tell yourself to be more disciplined, more committed, more willing
- 2:14to do whatever it takes. Sometimes that is exactly what's needed.
- 2:18And sometimes you have been faithful to the effort, but haven't
- 2:22paused to examine the direction you're going. More effort
- 2:26deserves a clear purpose. Before you decide
- 2:29to push harder, take a moment to, to look at what you're pushing
- 2:33toward. Is it the life that you actually desire, or is
- 2:37it the plan that you made before you knew just where
- 2:40you were going? Those can become 2 very different things. You see, a plan is
- 2:44created with the misunderstanding that you have at a particular
- 2:48moment. More effort deserves a clear purpose.
- 2:52Before you decide to push harder, take a moment to look at what
- 2:56you're pushing toward. Is it the life you actually desire,
- 3:00or is it the plan that you made before you knew what you know now?
- 3:04Those can become 2 very different things. A plan is
- 3:07created with the understanding that you have at a particular moment,
- 3:11but then you begin, you meet people, you gather experience, you discover
- 3:15what your audience needs. You learn more about your own strengths.
- 3:18You, you discover who your clients are, who your customers are.
- 3:23You have the information that you didn't have when you started.
- 3:26Allow that information to matter. You don't have to keep
- 3:30making yesterday's decisions simply because you were sincere when you made
- 3:33it. You can be sincere, my friends. You can be committed, but you
- 3:37can also be willing to adjust. Think about a stream that's moving
- 3:41through a landscape. You know, the water encounters a rock,
- 3:45but it finds a way around it through a narrow opening along another
- 3:49part of the bank. The course changes as the water meets the terrain,
- 3:53and that's a useful picture for our own life. An obstacle
- 3:57may require a different route. It may reveal an opening that you
- 4:01wouldn't have noticed otherwise. And the experience of navigating it
- 4:05can refine you. It can grow you. You become clearer
- 4:09about what matters. You discover your strengths. You release assumptions
- 4:13that were becoming limiting beliefs to you. The question
- 4:17becomes, where is there room for movement? Maybe you have been
- 4:21staring at one blocked path for so long that you haven't looked around
- 4:25for another option. You've decided that this particular person has
- 4:29to say yes, or this particular opportunity has to happen.
- 4:32This offer has to work out in precisely this form. But does
- 4:36your larger vision actually require that? Or have
- 4:40you assigned one route more importance than it actually deserves?
- 4:44Consider an example from Oprah Winfrey's career.
- 4:47Before she became known for talk television, she worked
- 4:50in television news. Baltimore. She has described
- 4:54being demoted from her news role and later being assigned to a talk show called
- 4:58People Are Talking. She found a strong sense of belonging in that
- 5:01format. She— the change wasn't initially a
- 5:05triumphant career move for her, but she began to change
- 5:08through it. It came through an experience that she described
- 5:12as a demotion, but it placed her in a setting where her ability
- 5:16to connect with people could finally shine.
- 5:19She could find expression there. And here's what I want
- 5:23you to consider about that story. An experience that looks like a setback
- 5:27in one role can lead toward a better use of your gifts
- 5:31and your skills. We cannot know what would have happened if her career
- 5:35had unfolded differently, but we can recognize the importance
- 5:38of being available to a different form of work. Imagine insisting that your
- 5:42only successful future must look exactly like the
- 5:46role you have originally pursued. How many possibilities
- 5:49would that exclude from you? You may know the impact that you want
- 5:53to have without knowing every single detail of how you're going to have it.
- 5:57You may know the kind of leader that you want to become without knowing the
- 6:00exact business model. You may know that you want a life of greater
- 6:04freedom, contribution, and abundance while still discovering exactly
- 6:08how to create it. Give yourself room for that discovery.
- 6:12Give yourself the chance for your stream to move around the
- 6:16rocks, to find a different path. This is where identity becomes so important.
- 6:20I talk so much about living from the identity of your wish fulfilled,
- 6:24and that means connecting with who you are as the person living
- 6:28the life that you desire. How do you think as that person? What do you
- 6:32value? What do you make decisions about? How do
- 6:36you treat people? What do you take responsibility for when you're living from
- 6:40your wish fulfilled, your goal achieved identity?
- 6:43Because when you become clear about that identity, you have something
- 6:46deeper to guide you than attachment to a particular strategy.
- 6:51Suppose you see yourself as a confident, effective business owner.
- 6:54Would that person refuse to review an approach that isn't producing
- 6:58useful results? Would they keep doing something simply
- 7:01to avoid admitting that they need to make a change? Or would they be
- 7:04willing to learn, to seek advice, and make a thoughtful
- 7:08adjustment? Flexibility can be an expression of that identity.
- 7:13You can make a new decision from confidence. You can say,
- 7:16I am committed to building this business and I'm willing
- 7:20to improve how I build it. Or I am committed to making
- 7:24this contribution and I'm open to a different way of delivering it. Your identity
- 7:28gives you a place to stand while the plan changes,
- 7:32while it evolves. Now, how do you recognize when an adjustment is
- 7:36needed? Well, that's the, that's the million-dollar question, isn't it?
- 7:40Well, first you start by listening. Listen to the results that you're receiving.
- 7:44Listen to the people you serve. And most important,
- 7:47listen to yourself. Listen to your gut. Your gut deserves
- 7:52a place in this conversation because there are times when you're, you're doing something
- 7:56difficult, but underneath that discomfort, you still
- 7:59feel like it's life-giving. You care about the work. You want to develop
- 8:04the skill. Even when a day stretches you, there is a deeper sense
- 8:07that this matters. And you want to keep growing in it.
- 8:10That is worth paying attention to. Something can be challenging and
- 8:14still be life-giving. Think about preparing for a presentation
- 8:18that you care deeply about. It may take hours. You may need to practice.
- 8:22You may be developing your PowerPoint presentation. You may feel
- 8:26nervous, but you're connected to the opportunity to contribute.
- 8:30The work asks the energy of you, and it also engages something
- 8:34meaningful within you. And then there are experiences where you feel increasingly
- 8:38disconnected from what you're doing. You just keep going through the motions.
- 8:42You struggle to explain why the approach still matters.
- 8:46You see little movement toward the life that you desire, and you keep
- 8:49overriding that sense that something needs attention.
- 8:53Well, that deserves an honest review. Please pardon this interruption to your
- 8:56podcast episode. This will not take but a minute. Before we continue, I want to
- 9:00ask you something. Do you know that you're capable of more, but your life right

- 10:17you engage, you are helping to spread this message and inspire someone
- 10:20else to create their best life through also living their own
- 10:24revolution of purpose. Now let's get you back to the Revolution
- 10:28of Purpose podcast. One difficult afternoon won't tell you
- 10:31everything. Exhaustion can make meaningful work feel heavy.
- 10:36Fear can make an appropriate step feel uncomfortable. So give yourself enough space
- 10:40to hear clearly, Rest, reflect,
- 10:44take a deep breath, and then look at the pattern that's
- 10:48forming over time and ask yourself, when I am rested and honest with
- 10:51myself, do I still want to grow in this direction that I'm going?
- 10:55Can I see how this work connects with the life I desire
- 10:59to be building? What specifically is draining my energy?
- 11:03And that last question, it really matters because perhaps
- 11:07the vision is still deeply meaningful, but the way you're pursuing it needs to
- 11:11change. Maybe you love serving your clients, but the structure of your offer leaves
- 11:16you stretched too thin. Maybe you believe in your work, but you're trying
- 11:19to communicate it through a method that doesn't allow your strengths to
- 11:23come through. Maybe you need support with a task that you've been insisting
- 11:27to carry alone. Maybe the question you need to ask yourself
- 11:31is who, not how. And be specific about what
- 11:35needs adjusting. You don't have to abandon an entire dream because the—
- 11:38there's one part of the approach that needs attention. Let's make this
- 11:42practical. Imagine that a business owner whose vision includes doing meaningful
- 11:46work, serves his clients well, and having time to enjoy life
- 11:50with their family. She builds a service that allows clients to contact
- 11:54them at any hour. And at first that feels so generous.
- 11:58She just wants to be helpful. But over time, they get
- 12:02constantly interrupted. Over time, all of a sudden he cannot fully
- 12:06be present at home. Over time, their workday has
- 12:10no clear ending. They begin wondering whether owning a business
- 12:14is right for them. Before they question the whole vision, they need to examine the
- 12:18structure of the business. Could they establish clear communication hours?
- 12:22Could they create a better process for common questions? Maybe implement
- 12:27some better boundaries? Could they adjust how support is delivered?
- 12:31The person living their desired life would need to make those types
- 12:35of decisions. Changing the structure could reduce burnout
- 12:39and let you relight and reignite that fire within you.
- 12:44It could bring the closer— the business closer to the vision that inspired it.
- 12:48And that is a meaningful pivot. And it, it may require courage to make it
- 12:52because sometimes we keep pushing an old approach to avoid
- 12:56the discomfort of making that new decision. We know how to work harder.
- 13:00We're less comfortable saying this needs to change. Someone may
- 13:03have expectations. We may have to learn a different skill. We may have
- 13:07to release the satisfaction of saying we were right all along.
- 13:11But you are allowed to grow beyond the plan that got you started.
- 13:15Let me say that again. You are allowed to grow beyond the
- 13:19plan that got you started. You're allowed to recognize that
- 13:23something served a season in your life, but it needs to evolve.
- 13:27You can appreciate what an approach taught you without committing
- 13:31to repeat it indefinitely. Now, I also want to give
- 13:35you— your efforts enough time to teach you something. Changing course
- 13:39every time you feel uncomfortable makes it difficult to build momentum.
- 13:42So before you replace your approach, I want you to ask
- 13:46yourself, have I actually practiced this consistently? Have I
- 13:50given it a reasonable opportunity? Am I responding to a pattern
- 13:54or reacting to one disappointing experience?
- 13:57Sometimes the adjustment is a new strategy. Sometimes it is following
- 14:01through on the strategy that you already chose. Why is
- 14:05this reflection so important? Because you want to make the decision
- 14:09with your vision in view and the useful information at your
- 14:13hands. Don't judge yourself too harshly. Just look at what
- 14:17you're going through and review it with truth in your
- 14:20perspective. And then you can test a change. You don't always
- 14:24need a dramatic announcement or a complete reinvention. You can make
- 14:28one adjustment and observe what happens. Have a different conversation.
- 14:32Change how you explain an offer. Ask for support. Create a
- 14:36boundary. Try a format that allows you to use your strengths more effectively.
- 14:40Let the next step produce more understanding.
- 14:44That is how you can flow while remaining responsible for your
- 14:47direction. Flow includes participation.
- 14:50You're listening, you're choosing, you're acting, you're responding,
- 14:55and you remain engaged with the life that you're creating.
- 14:58So before we close, I want you to consider one area where you've
- 15:02been pushing instead of flowing. Bring a specific situation
- 15:06to mind. It could be a business strategy, a commitment, a way of working,
- 15:10something that you've continued doing because it's just the way you've always done it.
- 15:14And first, reconnect with the identity of living as your wish fulfilled.
- 15:18Picture that life that you desire and the person that you
- 15:22are living it, that person you are within that life.
- 15:26What qualities does that person bring to this decision?
- 15:29Is it clarity, courage, patience,
- 15:32willingness to receive support? Then ask, does my current
- 15:36approach help me practice those qualities and move toward that life?
- 15:40Be honest with yourself. You may recognize that you need to
- 15:44stay consistent. You may recognize that one part that needs
- 15:47to be adjusted, or you may know that it is time to release
- 15:51this root altogether and explore another path.
- 15:54Name one decision. Keep it concrete enough that you can
- 15:58act on it. I will ask for feedback before repeating this offer. Or maybe it's,
- 16:02I will set communication hours that allow me to serve
- 16:05well and be present at home as well as for my clients. Or,
- 16:09or maybe it's, I will stop relying on one opportunity and explore
- 16:132 or more ways forward. Give yourself the next step that you
- 16:16can take and decide when you'll review what you learned.
- 16:20You can move with intention without demanding certainty, and you
- 16:24can trust your direction while remaining teachable about the
- 16:28route. I sure hope that this podcast reached you today in a time that
