- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday.
- 0:15It is the 15th of May and you have tapped on play.
- 0:20And for that I say thank you friend.
- 0:23Good to have your company as well.
- 0:24You're going to continue reading this book of Hebrews and today
- 0:27we are going to come across this fascinating weird little saying.
- 0:31They're going to talk about a high priest in the order of
- 0:35Melchizedek. And some of you might have heard
- 0:38that name or you think I've I've heard that before.
- 0:41What is the go with that priest in the order of Melchizedek?
- 0:45There is this strange moment in Genesis 14, way back at the
- 0:49start of the Bible, where Abraham finds himself in this
- 0:53strange land and he meets this bloke named Melchizedek, who is
- 0:57this Prince and this priest to the High God Out of nowhere,
- 1:02here is this random guy. This is before Levi was born.
- 1:06Before Israel was born, before there's even a nation of
- 1:09Israelites, before God's church had arrived.
- 1:13Here is this guy who is this priest worshipping the real God.
- 1:18So when the author of Hebrews talks about this order of
- 1:21Melchizedek, he's saying that there has always been a way of
- 1:25worshipping God outside of the structure of the Israelite
- 1:29people. That worship of God is way
- 1:32bigger than any system that the Israelites might have.
- 1:36So you're going to hear a couple of mentions of Melchizedek
- 1:38today, and then next week there will be a whole chapter all
- 1:42about Melchizedek and that way of worshipping.
- 1:45So we'll get more details later on, but that is a sneak peek of
- 1:48what we'll come across. You ready?
- 1:50You're ready to read more about how awesome Jesus is?
- 1:53Yeah, me too. Let us read together Hebrews
- 1:57chapter 5. Every high priest is a man
- 2:10chosen to represent other people in their dealings with God.
- 2:13He presents their gifts to God and offers sacrifices for their
- 2:17sins. And he is able to deal gently
- 2:20with ignorant and wayward people because he himself is subject to
- 2:25the same weakness. That is why he must offer
- 2:28sacrifices for his own sins as well as theirs.
- 2:33And no one can become a high priest simply because he wants
- 2:36such an honour. He must be called by God for
- 2:39this work, just as Aaron was. That is why Christ did not
- 2:44honour himself by assuming he could become high priest.
- 2:48No, he was chosen by God, who said to him, You are my son to
- 2:54day I have become your father. And in another passage, God said
- 2:59to him, You are a priest forever, in the order of
- 3:03Melchizedek. While Jesus was here on earth,
- 3:08he offered prayers and pleadings with a loud cry and tears to the
- 3:13one who could rescue him from death.
- 3:15And God heard his prayers because of his deep reverence
- 3:19for God. Even though Jesus was God's Son,
- 3:23he learned obedience from the things he suffered.
- 3:26In this way, God qualified him as a perfect high priest, and he
- 3:32became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey
- 3:36him. And God designated him to be a
- 3:40high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
- 3:44There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is
- 3:48difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull
- 3:52and don't seem to listen. You have been believers so long
- 3:56now that you ought to be teaching others.
- 3:59Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things
- 4:04about God's Word. You are like babies who need
- 4:07milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk,
- 4:12is still an infant, and doesn't know how to do what is right.
- 4:16Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training
- 4:20have the skills to recognise the difference between right and
- 4:24wrong. Thank you Jesus for everything
- 4:35you have done for us. Thank you Father, for giving us
- 4:39Jesus so that he could live this perfect life and through his
- 4:44life, just like one of us. He has the right.
- 4:47In fact, you have designated him as our High Priest so that he
- 4:53can make a way between US and you, Lord, and He can break open
- 5:00the barriers that lie between our God and ourselves and have
- 5:05perfect unity with you, Lord, here in this life, in this
- 5:11broken world. It can feel hard to be close to
- 5:14you as we want to be, but we know that in the blink of an eye
- 5:18this life will come and go, and there we will be, basking in
- 5:23your love and your presence, made possible by all that Jesus
- 5:28did for us. Thank you for giving us Jesus.
- 5:34Thank you for saving us. We are so grateful and we pray
- 5:38all of this through Him who saves us.
- 5:42Amen.
