- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in the last half of
- 0:21Isaiah chapter 6 and last episode we saw Isaiah sees a
- 0:27glimpse of the throne room of God.
- 0:29He sees the angels, the seraphim that are flying around God's
- 0:35throne. They're proclaiming holy, holy,
- 0:37holy is the Lord of armies. The His glory fills the whole
- 0:42earth. We saw that even the foundations
- 0:46of the doorways shook at the sound of the Angel voices, and
- 0:51the temple was filled with smoke.
- 0:53Isaiah recognized his state before God.
- 0:55He says, what was me for I am ruined because I am a man of
- 1:00unclean lips and live among a people of unclean lips.
- 1:04When we encounter God, truly our response is we are sinful, we
- 1:11are unworthy of this incredible, good, holy, just, perfect,
- 1:17loving God. But we then read in verse number
- 1:22six. Then one of the seraphim flew to
- 1:24Isaiah and in his hand was a glowing coal that the Angel had
- 1:28taken from the altar with tongs. He touched Isaiah's mouth with
- 1:31it and said, Now that this has touched your lips, your iniquity
- 1:34is removed and your sin is atoned for, if you will, from
- 1:39the altar of God. From that place of forgiveness,
- 1:42forgiveness was extended from heaven to Isaiah.
- 1:46It wasn't that Isaiah earned it, but that he received it, same as
- 1:50we have today, that from that altar that Jesus supplied his
- 1:54blood to as he ascended into heaven, as we read in Hebrews 9
- 1:59and 10, we receive forgiveness from heaven.
- 2:04Now verse #8 Isaiah has a purpose, a responsibility.
- 2:12He has excitement as he has encountered God and has received
- 2:17forgiveness from him. It leads him to do, to believe,
- 2:21to say something. And we can see this in verse #8
- 2:25Then I heard the voice of the Lord asking, who will I send?
- 2:29Who will go for us? I said here I am, send me.
- 2:34So God is wanting to send a messenger out to the world and
- 2:40those that have truly experienced the forgiveness and
- 2:43the grace of God, those who have seen God's grandeur will want to
- 2:47tell other people about what they have found.
- 2:50If you go. I have no desire to ever talk
- 2:53about my relationship with God or what God's done for me or how
- 2:57God is moving in my life. I have no desire to talk to
- 2:59anyone else about that. My friend, I want to challenge
- 3:02you. It may be that you are not a
- 3:05Christian. Those that truly do encounter
- 3:08God cannot help but talk about what they have seen and heard.
- 3:12That's what we read the apostles telling, telling the Sanhedrin,
- 3:18the ruling Pharisees and Sadducees there in Jerusalem in
- 3:21the 1st century, even as they were being beaten for saying
- 3:27what they believed about Jesus. They say we cannot help but
- 3:32speak about the things that we have seen and heard, the women
- 3:36that went to the empty tomb of Jesus.
- 3:39As we'll celebrate on Sunday, those women couldn't help but go
- 3:45and tell the disciples about what they had seen.
- 3:49If it is real in us, we will want it to be real for others.
- 3:54Does that mean that we won't experience fear?
- 3:57No, we'll definitely experience fear.
- 3:59Does it mean that we will have no situational awareness about
- 4:05how we say it, or when we say it, or where we say it or how
- 4:09loudly we say it? No, there are many, many things
- 4:14that will play into what that looks like in our life.
- 4:16But do you have any desire to tell other people about the Lord
- 4:20here? Isaiah says, here I am, send me.
- 4:23I will be the one that speaks on behalf of God to the people.
- 4:27Verse #9 And God replied, Go say to these people, keep listening
- 4:34but do not understand. Keep looking, but do not
- 4:38perceive. Make the minds of these people
- 4:42dull, deafen their ears and blind their eyes.
- 4:45Otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their
- 4:48ears. Understand with their minds.
- 4:50Turn back and be healed. Hear what God is instructing.
- 4:56Isaiah is I want you to go and I want you to preach to these
- 4:59people, but I want you to know they will not listen to you.
- 5:03They are not going to listen to my words.
- 5:06And though I am giving you a message from this heavenly
- 5:09throne room, it is only going to result in them turning more deaf
- 5:17ears to what God is saying. This is like with Pharaoh.
- 5:21I think I've mentioned it several times on the podcast.
- 5:23It it's a helpful word picture for me that God hardened
- 5:28Pharaoh's heart, that this same sun that melted the heart of
- 5:34Isaiah, that his heart was like ice, that when the sun shines on
- 5:40the ice it melts. That was Isaiah's heart versus
- 5:44the heart of Pharaoh, that when God commanded him to do things,
- 5:50he did not listen and obey. Instead, he insisted on his own
- 5:55will, his own way. And so his heart was like clay,
- 5:59that when the sun shines on the clay, it hardens up.
- 6:03And so here that's what God is saying for Isaiah.
- 6:07These people are not going to believe, they are not going to
- 6:11obey. And so actually John the Apostle
- 6:16quotes this particular portion of Scripture for Palm Sunday as
- 6:23Jesus comes into Jerusalem. We would read this in the end of
- 6:32John 12 and verse #39 says This is why they were unable to
- 6:39believe. The people that heard Jesus's
- 6:42preaching but did not respond in faith to it says This is why
- 6:46they were unable to believe. Because Isaiah also said he has
- 6:49blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts so that they would
- 6:54not see with their eyes or understand with their hearts and
- 6:57turn and I would heal them. Isaiah said these things because
- 7:01he saw His glory and spoke about him.
- 7:06And so here John the Apostle draws this picture from the Old
- 7:10Testament to say Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of all of
- 7:15the rest of Scripture. And so if this was true in the
- 7:18ministry of Isaiah, it would be even more true in the ministry
- 7:23of Christ that as Jesus preached all across Israel for three
- 7:30years that it did not result in widespread like revival and
- 7:36turning to God. Some people certainly did.
- 7:38And what a joy. You can think to the apostles.
- 7:42You can think of the 70. You can think of even that group
- 7:46of over 500 that saw him at one time post resurrection.
- 7:52You can think of all of the women that followed Jesus and
- 7:55tended to needs that there were people that followed, but many
- 8:00people they they turned to deaf ear.
- 8:03They would not receive what God had said.
- 8:08And so Isaiah then asks in verse 11, until when Lord, like how
- 8:12long am I supposed to be preaching to these people that
- 8:16will totally reject everything that I am saying that even as
- 8:21I'm preaching a great wonderful message of redemption and hope
- 8:27that God says, no, all this is going to do is seal their fate
- 8:31as a result of their lack of desire to listen to me.
- 8:36And God says, and they're in verse 11, So Isaiah says, how
- 8:40long am I preaching this message of it's a good message, but
- 8:45everyone's turning a deaf ear to it.
- 8:46And he says, and God says, you were to preach this until cities
- 8:51lie in ruins without inhabitants, houses are without
- 8:55people, the land is ruined and desolate.
- 8:58And he always drives the people far away, leaving great
- 9:01emptiness in the land. Though a 10th will remain in the
- 9:05land, it will be burned again, like the terebinth or the oak
- 9:10that leaves a stump when felled. The holy seed is the stump.
- 9:17So here God says Isaiah, you're going to keep on preaching this.
- 9:21This is the message from God to Israel.
- 9:25This isn't a message for one week.
- 9:27It's not for five years. Isaiah would preach this message
- 9:31until his death, and then even after his death, you'd still
- 9:36have 50 to 100 years before the prophecy would come true.
- 9:41Isaiah preached all his life a message of a coming judgment
- 9:46that would not come during his time, but would come after his
- 9:50time. It was a message that was not
- 9:52popular. Even history would tell us that
- 9:55Isaiah would likely have been sawed in half by the very Last
- 10:03King of Judah during Isaiah's lifespan.
- 10:07That he would be sawed in half as a result of the hatred of
- 10:11that king for the message of Isaiah.
- 10:15Many people think Isaiah's, specifically the man mentioned
- 10:18in Hebrews 11, that some of the prophets that had faith in God
- 10:23were in the words of the old King James.
- 10:26Saw and asunder were cut in half as a result of their faith in
- 10:31the Lord. And I want to ask you, if you
- 10:35never saw God's promises take place within your lifetime,
- 10:43would you still believe in Him and follow Him?
- 10:47Would you repent and turn to the Lord even if the prophesied
- 10:52judgement did not come during your lifetime?
- 10:57So much of what I hope to accomplish as a Christian and as
- 11:02a pastor is planting seeds for trees that I will never see.
- 11:10I want. My prayer is that Tabernacle.
- 11:14We're 76 years old right now. My prayer is that Tabernacle
- 11:19would last at least another 76 years.
- 11:22I want it to far outlast me. And again, this is probably not.
- 11:28Actually, no. This could be practical for some
- 11:30of you. One of the very first things
- 11:35that we did as a church when I came here was to do an update of
- 11:39our constitution and bylaws. It really needed a work over and
- 11:45the the church knew that they had already voted on the
- 11:48constitution review committee and all of that.
- 11:52But so much of what we worked through together as a
- 11:57Constitution review committee was setting up systems for
- 12:03someday, setting up the system for what that process looks like
- 12:06to get a new pastor, what the process looks like if a pastor
- 12:12sins and fails and the church has to deal with it, how to deal
- 12:16with abuse within the church. And my prayer is that all of
- 12:21those things that I set up will be wonderful for a someday that,
- 12:28you know, I won't ever have to vote in the new pastor of
- 12:33Tabernacle, like I won't have to be the one that finds him.
- 12:36But my prayer is that what I planted will then help and
- 12:41benefit someone else later. Can I ask you in your Christian
- 12:45life, are you planting seeds now for someone else's someday?
- 12:51This is what Isaiah is doing. He's warning them because there
- 12:55would come that day of judgement, and so he needed to
- 12:58be faithful now to warn them so that they wouldn't have to
- 13:02experience the judgment later. Maybe if you are listening to
- 13:08this, you're not really sold out on the whole Christianity thing.
- 13:12You're not really sold out on the whole church thing.
- 13:15I want part of my ministry to be to warn you, though I may not
- 13:21know every single one of you personally.
- 13:23I want to warn you about the coming judgement that one day
- 13:27Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead.
- 13:30And that could happen, you know, even as I'm recording this, or
- 13:34it could happen 2000 years from right now.
- 13:38I don't know when the day is, but I want to faithfully preach.
- 13:42That might make me look stupid. In the meantime that people go,
- 13:45well, where, where is this Jesus?
- 13:47And for 2000 years people have been saying, Oh yeah, Jesus will
- 13:50come back. Well, where in the world is he?
- 13:52He hasn't told me the day or the hour.
- 13:55No one on earth knows the day or the hour in which the Son of Man
- 13:59will return. But I want to be faithful to
- 14:01proclaim that coming Judgment Day.
- 14:04And I want to be faithful to love and care for others now so
- 14:08that hopefully one day my son or my daughter's spouse are the
- 14:14recipient of seeds that I planted now of kindness, of
- 14:18love, of respect, of generosity, that then their spouse is
- 14:25changed or they're, they're, let me rephrase my sentence real
- 14:30quick because I got lost. And as I was saying it, I want
- 14:34to raise my kids to be good spouses and planting that seed
- 14:40so that one day, Brian or Evelyn's spouses, they will
- 14:45experience a better life as a result of what I have input into
- 14:51my kids. Or, you know, if you're someone
- 14:54you know at a church, I encourage you, if you have the
- 14:59ability, have the desire serve in kids ministry.
- 15:02And it could be that that kid that you teach about the gospel
- 15:07or about kindness in Sunday school, one day they might be
- 15:11able to teach someone else, or they might be able to lead
- 15:14someone else to the Lord as a result of the fact that they saw
- 15:17Jesus's love and his kindness. Be so real in you.
- 15:22Are you willing to plant seeds for trees that you will never
- 15:26get to sit under the shade of? I think there's just a lot of
- 15:32wonderful truths in there from Isaiah's preaching.
- 15:36Also, don't measure the effectiveness or the
- 15:40faithfulness of your ministry. I what other people do in
- 15:45response to it, so you can take that in a bad way.
- 15:49I could be the most obnoxious, annoying, unhygienic, worst
- 15:56speaker in the world and then try to say, OK, well, I'm being
- 16:02really faithful just to preach the gospel.
- 16:06And so not my fault if no one wants to come to my church and
- 16:12if no one wants to be around me like I'm I'm just preaching
- 16:15faithfully. Well, there could be some things
- 16:18that I'm doing that are actively deterring people from the
- 16:21gospel. But here is with Isaiah.
- 16:25He's preaching the message that God gave him and God tells him
- 16:30people will not respond well to it.
- 16:32You can think about Jesus that there were the times all
- 16:35throughout his ministry where people rejected him and it was
- 16:39not as a result of any imperfection in Jesus.
- 16:42Just sometimes God's message is not received by those that hear
- 16:46it. It always accomplishes what God
- 16:49sends it out to do. Sometimes God sends His word to
- 16:51change people. Sometimes God sends His word to
- 16:54harden people's hearts that they would have a just condemnation
- 16:59as a result of the fact that they received the message of God
- 17:02or that they heard the message of God but did not receive it.
- 17:07So don't think, OK, I I've genuinely been faithfully
- 17:13witnessing to this person for 20 years and I must be doing
- 17:18something wrong because they're not saved yet.
- 17:19No, it could be that the purpose God has you in sharing your
- 17:23faith is that they will one day receive a righteous a just
- 17:28condemnation because they were told the gospel and did not
- 17:33receive it. Or it could be that in God's
- 17:36time, in God's way, they might eventually accept it.
- 17:40But don't. Don't base faithfulness off of
- 17:46fruit because you don't know what kind of fruit that God is
- 17:48going for. That doesn't excuse us to be
- 17:51ungodly in the way that we interact with others, and it
- 17:55doesn't mean that we shouldn't try to avoid deterring people
- 17:59from the gospel through failures or flaws in US.
- 18:07But don't base faithfulness on fruit.
- 18:13Then the very last thing that I want to mention from this
- 18:16passage is in verse #13 Though a 10th, a tenth of the nation will
- 18:22remain in the land. It will be burned again, like
- 18:25the terebinth or the oak that leaves a stump when felled.
- 18:30The holy seed is the stump, and so this seed here, much like the
- 18:35branch that we heard about a couple chapters ago, is a topic
- 18:42that will pop up a couple more times in Isaiah.
- 18:46And even in Chapter 7, we're going to see a manual being
- 18:51talked about God with us. And so this branch of Israel
- 18:57that is left, a surviving portion of the Kingdom is going
- 19:03to bring out life. And that eternal Kingdom that
- 19:08God promised to David, it will come through the Messiah.
- 19:12And so here the Messiah's line would not be snuffed out.
- 19:16There's only a stump left of this great tree that was once
- 19:20the southern Kingdom of Judah, but in that stump is the holy
- 19:25seed, that seed of the woman that will crush the head of the
- 19:27serpent, the seed of Abraham who would receive the blessing and
- 19:31who would be a blessing to all the nations of the world.
- 19:35This is the one that Israel is looking for, that even though
- 19:38there is harsh judgment that is coming, even though many people
- 19:41will not receive the message of God yet God is still working for
- 19:45the redemption of mankind through the descendants of
- 19:50Judah. This is a well, I got to tell
- 19:55you guys, over the last like 3 episodes, it's all been really
- 19:58tough, really heavy stuff. But what a joy that God does
- 20:02forgive, that God does have hope even in hard circumstances.
- 20:09Next episode we're going to look at Isaiah 7.
- 20:12I'm really looking forward to this.
- 20:14I preached a message on Isaiah 7 several years ago.
- 20:19Now I'll probably end up linking the sermon in the show notes on
- 20:25that particular episode, but looking forward to that.
- 20:27Have a wonderful Easter. If you are listening to this on
- 20:31the day it comes out, it's Good Friday and looking forward to
- 20:35seeing what the Lord does during this Easter time.
- 20:38God bless.
