- 0:09Speaker 1: We're fired up all day today natural caffeine boost. Now
- 0:13Speaker 1: even more so with that sweatshirt from our front office,
- 0:16Speaker 1: Unfiltered Star, our resident GM, Jim Bowden joining us right
- 0:20Speaker 1: now with the ft sweatshirt, JB.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Great to have you on perfect day for it.
- 0:23Speaker 1: We got some Reds and Nats topics too, which we'll
- 0:25Speaker 1: get to, but I want to start with the hot
- 0:26Speaker 1: topic of the day. How do you treat these last
- 0:29Speaker 1: several days if you're a team fighting for every single
- 0:32Speaker 1: game in the National League Wildcard example a the Arizona
- 0:35Speaker 1: Diamondbacks opting for a bullpen game instead of Zach Allen,
- 0:38Speaker 1: who will instead pitch over the weekend.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Your thoughts on a mini punt.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Yeah, So, as soon as I heard that happen, I
- 0:47Speaker 3: picked up the phone and called Mike Hayes and the
- 0:49Speaker 3: general manager of the Diamondbacks, to ask him what the
- 0:51Speaker 3: thinking was behind it.
- 0:53Speaker 4: This is what he told me.
- 0:54Speaker 3: He said they were going to have a bullpen game
- 0:57Speaker 3: either today or Saturday, and and talking with the manager
- 1:01Speaker 3: of the pitching coach, Zach Gallen and Order Rodriguez, they
- 1:04Speaker 3: decided that the best route for them was to go
- 1:07Speaker 3: with a bullpen game today that would allow them to
- 1:10Speaker 3: push Gallon and Rodriguez each back to day, give them
- 1:13Speaker 3: each an extra day since, look, you're in the end
- 1:16Speaker 3: of September. You got a lot of anxiety. Yeah, pitched
- 1:19Speaker 3: a lot, as you know, since the All Star break,
- 1:22Speaker 3: and so they felt like they have a better chance
- 1:24Speaker 3: of winning the most games by doing the bullpen game
- 1:28Speaker 3: tonight against the Dodgers and then having their starting pitchers
- 1:31Speaker 3: fresh for the weekend, and so that was their they
- 1:33Speaker 3: could behind it, and it makes sense to me. It
- 1:36Speaker 3: does so again, I don't know how Gallan feels. I
- 1:39Speaker 3: don't know how Rodriguez feels, but I know one thing.
- 1:41Speaker 3: If they're all talking to them and they feel they're
- 1:44Speaker 3: better off pushing them back a day, why not do
- 1:46Speaker 3: the bullpen day today instead?
- 1:49Speaker 5: Another reasoning, I mean, that makes sense and all. But
- 1:52Speaker 5: now let's say they do get into the postseason somehow.
- 1:56Speaker 5: Then if it pushes Gallon back to game two at
- 1:59Speaker 5: the first, Rigez the game three, who pitches game on
- 2:01Speaker 5: Ryan Nelson, Brandon fought. I mean, there's there's multiple things
- 2:05Speaker 5: to think about other than just hey, yeah, it's cool,
- 2:08Speaker 5: but they got to win every game, so why would
- 2:10Speaker 5: As a player, I'm like, man, we want to play
- 2:12Speaker 5: our best pitcher today and then our next best pitcher
- 2:14Speaker 5: of the next day, and then if we get to
- 2:16Speaker 5: Sunday and we're still alive, screw it. Everybody's available.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Well, Gallan can still pitch game one though, right, So
- 2:23Speaker 3: pushing him back a day doesn't affect that to your point.
- 2:26Speaker 5: But if you pitch, you can't pitch game on if
- 2:30Speaker 5: he pitches Friday, because then you have Saturday, Sunday, Monday,
- 2:34Speaker 5: Tuesday starts unless heed to Wednesday.
- 2:37Speaker 3: It depends how he feels. Though you could go in
- 2:40Speaker 3: three days rest if that's what you needed to do.
- 2:41Speaker 5: There's a long history of that being awful.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look, it's a discussion. I get it,
- 2:47Speaker 3: but I will tell you that when I've been in
- 2:49Speaker 3: those positions before as a GM, I wanted to get there,
- 2:52Speaker 3: and I wasn't gonna sit there and try to plan
- 2:55Speaker 3: for the first postseason series because if I don't get there,
- 2:58Speaker 3: it doesn't matter. All I care about is until we
- 3:01Speaker 3: clinch and that champagne has popped and that beer is
- 3:04Speaker 3: being poured over people's heads. I'm gonna do everything I
- 3:07Speaker 3: can to win the most games I can until I
- 3:10Speaker 3: get there and that's how I see it. I mean,
- 3:12Speaker 3: it's like Toronto, They're gonna have a big decision possibly
- 3:14Speaker 3: on Sunday, right if they if they need to win
- 3:17Speaker 3: Sunday and division, do you start start Kevin Gosman and
- 3:21Speaker 3: then lose him for the first two.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Wild card games.
- 3:24Speaker 3: I mean, that's gonna be a tough decision then, But
- 3:26Speaker 3: that's gonna be different because they're gonna get in either way.
- 3:29Speaker 3: So it's a little bit uh different decision. But with
- 3:32Speaker 3: Arizona right now, you're not in the playoffs today. You
- 3:35Speaker 3: have to catch the nets and you got to you
- 3:38Speaker 3: gotta make finish ahead of the Reds, And so to me,
- 3:41Speaker 3: I just need to care about the next four games.
- 3:45Speaker 3: What is the best way for me to win all
- 3:47Speaker 3: four if I can? And this was their decision and
- 3:50Speaker 3: I support that.
- 3:52Speaker 5: Okay, so you brought that up. Now, I know we're
- 3:54Speaker 5: talking about Arizona, But let's go real quick to schoobl
- 3:57Speaker 5: Schoobl's lined up to pitch Sunday if you can. If
- 4:00Speaker 5: you're tied with the Guardians, knowing the Guardians have the
- 4:03Speaker 5: tiebreaker the last game of the year, do you pitch
- 4:05Speaker 5: Schooble or do you save them for Game one, knowing
- 4:07Speaker 5: you already in the postseason, do you save him for
- 4:10Speaker 5: game one or do you try to win the division
- 4:12Speaker 5: and get the home games.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I think in the Traits case, I need to
- 4:17Speaker 3: save them for game one. I think Detroit's case, I
- 4:19Speaker 3: don't trust anybody except Schooble, so I'm trying to win
- 4:22Speaker 3: with one starting pitcher. So if I know I'm in
- 4:24Speaker 3: the playoffs, then Schoogle's pitching Game one of the playoffs
- 4:27Speaker 3: because that gives me the best chance of winning the
- 4:30Speaker 3: wildcard series.
- 4:33Speaker 6: Okay, that's fair. That's where we had that argument the
- 4:37Speaker 6: other day. My question to you, they were just playing
- 4:40Speaker 6: at Diamondbacks. We're just talking about the Diamondbacks. The Dodgers.
- 4:44Speaker 6: Have you ever seen the end of the season unfold
- 4:48Speaker 6: like this in a manner of the fact that they
- 4:51Speaker 6: were playing in postseason last year with a bullpen. They
- 4:54Speaker 6: have so many questions. Now they're going to their deep
- 4:58Speaker 6: rotation to fill in their bullpen.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Yeah, that's their only chance over.
- 5:05Speaker 3: I am surprised, I guess, just looking at it from
- 5:09Speaker 3: the outside, I'm surprised they didn't put em at Sheehan
- 5:12Speaker 3: back in the bullpen earlier.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Surprise. They didn't put Kershaw back there earlier.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Surprised they didn't give more consideration to using Otani out
- 5:20Speaker 3: of the bullpen and going with Yamamoto, Snell, Glass Snow
- 5:24Speaker 3: with Otani in the pen. Like I think, when you
- 5:27Speaker 3: looked at this team down the stretch, it's very clear
- 5:29Speaker 3: the bullpen problems are real.
- 5:31Speaker 4: They're not going to be fixed in October.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Your only way of fixing it is taking your great
- 5:36Speaker 3: six man rotation, taking two of them and putting them
- 5:39Speaker 3: in the back. And so, yeah, this is something I've
- 5:42Speaker 3: been watching because I thought when we got to the
- 5:44Speaker 3: last ten days of the season, the Dodgers were going
- 5:47Speaker 3: to make at least one dramatic move with one of
- 5:50Speaker 3: their four best starters to fix that bullpen, and they.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Haven't done it.
- 5:53Speaker 3: So it sounds like they're going to go Otani, Yamamoto,
- 5:58Speaker 3: and Snell as their first starters with glassnow Game four,
- 6:01Speaker 3: it sounds like I'm not so sure they wouldn't be
- 6:04Speaker 3: better off in my opinion, putting one of those four
- 6:08Speaker 3: in the back of the pen and then using either
- 6:11Speaker 3: Sheehand or.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Kershaw as as the fourth starter.
- 6:13Speaker 3: But again, I think how the Dodgers handle that bullpen
- 6:17Speaker 3: in the playoffs is going to be a huge storyline.
- 6:21Speaker 5: What it always is, It always is how quick is
- 6:23Speaker 5: Dave Roberts hook? It might be longer than we're used to.
- 6:25Speaker 5: Let's go to another team that you're very very special,
- 6:29Speaker 5: meaning in your herd gym, the Cincinnati Reds, the Cincinnati Rids.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Last time they won a playoff series. You were the
- 6:35Speaker 5: GM nineteen ninety five, only thirty years ago, so you're
- 6:38Speaker 5: you look better now than you did thirty years ago.
- 6:40Speaker 5: Have to minute. But here's the thing. Do they want
- 6:43Speaker 5: to win the wild card? I mean, I know they do,
- 6:46Speaker 5: but like it's like watching these games it is pulling teeth.
- 6:49Speaker 5: You're like, oh, oh, just get a hip, please get
- 6:51Speaker 5: the guy over make up. It's it is so hard
- 6:55Speaker 5: slash fun to watch.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Their pitching is great, their offense is not good good
- 7:00Speaker 5: until it's not good. It is like the most fun
- 7:03Speaker 5: horrible watch of all time.
- 7:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree with you.
- 7:06Speaker 3: And look, the nationallygue has five really good teams and
- 7:10Speaker 3: there is not a six team that should make the playoffs. Right, Mets, Diamondbacks,
- 7:14Speaker 3: and Reds have none of those.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Street teams we should be talking about.
- 7:18Speaker 3: But because we had the expanded playoffs, we get to
- 7:21Speaker 3: talk about one of them are going to get in.
- 7:23Speaker 3: When I look at the Reds, I look at their
- 7:25Speaker 3: lineup and I just say, you don't have enough offense
- 7:27Speaker 3: to be a postseason team. I watch these guys swing
- 7:30Speaker 3: out of the strike zone. Matt McClain drove me crazy
- 7:33Speaker 3: last night. I just can't stand how much they swing
- 7:36Speaker 3: out of the zone. I can't stand how much they'll
- 7:39Speaker 3: try to pull a slider away. I can't stand out
- 7:41Speaker 3: they'll swing at the first pitch when they got two
- 7:44Speaker 3: men on and one out, and they'll swing at the
- 7:46Speaker 3: first pitch and pop it up. I think Terry Francona
- 7:49Speaker 3: has done an amazing job with this team. I think
- 7:52Speaker 3: the fact that they literally have a chance of getting
- 7:54Speaker 3: in the playoffs has as much to do with Terry
- 7:56Speaker 3: Francona as it does the great young starters that they have.
- 8:00Speaker 4: I think it's gonna be a fun weekend to watch them.
- 8:02Speaker 3: This lineup is not good enough to get there, but
- 8:04Speaker 3: you know what, the Mets rotation isn't good enough to
- 8:06Speaker 3: get there. Arizona shouldn't be there the way their team is,
- 8:11Speaker 3: since they traded three of their best players at the deadline,
- 8:13Speaker 3: so you know, I look at the Reds and you
- 8:16Speaker 3: know they've got a shot.
- 8:17Speaker 4: We'll wait.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Last night against the Pirates and lost all my fingernails
- 8:21Speaker 3: watching the game, but it frustrated me. I did because
- 8:25Speaker 3: I can't tell you how many games the Reds have
- 8:27Speaker 3: loss this year by swinging at bad pitches or not
- 8:30Speaker 3: turning the double.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Play or not going to the right base.
- 8:33Speaker 3: They just always seem to do something out of the
- 8:37Speaker 3: ordinary to lose, and it drives me absolutely nuts. So
- 8:40Speaker 3: I think it's gonna be fun to watch these three
- 8:41Speaker 3: teams down the stretch. But it doesn't matter who ends
- 8:44Speaker 3: up winning that last spot. They'll lose it in two
- 8:48Speaker 3: games and they'll be over.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Crat.
- 8:51Speaker 1: At some point, we're gonna laugh about how healthcare was
- 8:54Speaker 1: so reactive and not proactive, and we're starting to change
- 8:58Speaker 1: that with Superpower. They believe human has one hundred plus
- 9:01Speaker 1: year potential and they're here to help you get there.
- 9:04Speaker 1: I'm a big believer in this. I just started the journey,

- 9:19Speaker 6: You had to go get all these lab panels and
- 9:21Speaker 6: it was a long drawn out, expensive process. But now
- 9:24Speaker 6: with Superpower, so this is awesome for me. I'm excited
- 9:27Speaker 6: about it.

- 9:48Speaker 1: and please support FT and tell them we sent you.
- 9:51Speaker 6: All Right, well, let's just insert same conversation with the Mets.
- 9:56Speaker 6: Can you break down where it went wrong for them?
- 10:00Speaker 6: Get it? They're still they can still make the playoffs
- 10:03Speaker 6: or in control of their own destiny.
- 10:05Speaker 5: But where did it go wrong?
- 10:08Speaker 2: On?
- 10:08Speaker 5: What date?
- 10:09Speaker 6: Was it December or was it in the middle of May?
- 10:15Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 10:15Speaker 4: Middle of May, I guess.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I mean, look, I thought in March, you know, I
- 10:20Speaker 3: questioned if the Mets had enough starting pitching, and then
- 10:23Speaker 3: kind of felt like, okay, well there is senga Manaya
- 10:26Speaker 3: and Peterson and Holmes looks good being converted. You don't
- 10:31Speaker 3: maybe maybe, but no, it wasn't. Maybe it was. The
- 10:35Speaker 3: answer was, no, we're not gonna see Code Senga again.
- 10:38Speaker 3: He's in the miners. When you know, Manaiah went to
- 10:40Speaker 3: the bullpen and he had to have a spot start.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Frankie Montas Junior is gone, he can have an operation.
- 10:46Speaker 4: They don't have enough starting pitching.
- 10:48Speaker 3: When Nola McClain is not pitching, you just don't know
- 10:51Speaker 3: if they're gonna win.
- 10:52Speaker 4: David Peterson's been up and down.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Holmes has pitched well overall, but not as much in
- 10:57Speaker 3: the second half as expected as a converted reliever.
- 11:01Speaker 4: They don't starting pitching is as simple as that look.
- 11:03Speaker 4: I think the offense would be fine.
- 11:05Speaker 3: I was surprised the defense has been as bad as
- 11:07Speaker 3: it's been, which it really has been at the end.
- 11:09Speaker 4: Of the day.
- 11:10Speaker 3: But when you have Soto and Alonso and lindn Or
- 11:13Speaker 3: you know Vantos, you're gonna score enough runs. But the
- 11:15Speaker 3: starting pitching, when McLain's not pitching, I just don't know
- 11:19Speaker 3: how many runs are gonna give up. So yeah, kind
- 11:21Speaker 3: of like the Reds, I'm surprised they're still in this conversation, JB.
- 11:26Speaker 1: If we fast forward to the postseason, we pretty much
- 11:29Speaker 1: know that the Cubs are going to host the Padres
- 11:32Speaker 1: and the Dodgers are going to play a wildcard series
- 11:35Speaker 1: at home against this sixth spot that nobody wants. Which
- 11:39Speaker 1: team do you think is the most dangerous threat to
- 11:41Speaker 1: the Dodgers? And I'm going to just jump in with
- 11:43Speaker 1: my thought. Maybe there's bias, but I actually think the
- 11:46Speaker 1: Mets offense can keep up. There's been some good series
- 11:48Speaker 1: for them this year against the Dodgers. Can they win
- 11:50Speaker 1: two games with McLean starting Game one in a series
- 11:53Speaker 1: like that and then shrinking their relief pitching circle of trust,
- 11:57Speaker 1: Dia is probably gonna go two innings a night. Do
- 12:00Speaker 1: you think that they are the biggest threat?
- 12:04Speaker 4: Huh, that's a great question. I don't think they're a
- 12:06Speaker 4: threat at all in Arizona. I don't think it's a threat.
- 12:09Speaker 4: The Reds aren't a threat, no Number A threat. I
- 12:11Speaker 4: think the Mexican win a game.
- 12:12Speaker 3: I think they're the biggest threat to win a game,
- 12:15Speaker 3: But I mean, you're not going to beat the Dodgers.
- 12:18Speaker 3: I think the Dodgers get through that first round easy
- 12:20Speaker 3: and then they've got the Phillies, who were the best
- 12:22Speaker 3: team in the National League, and we'll see what happens.
- 12:26Speaker 5: Wow, okay, all right, now we got to go back
- 12:28Speaker 5: to something you said. I don't know when it was
- 12:30Speaker 5: last week, last month, we asked you about manager of
- 12:33Speaker 5: the Year in the American League, and you know where
- 12:34Speaker 5: I'm going. This is aj Hinch still the manager of
- 12:37Speaker 5: the year. Yes, even though they have blown the biggest
- 12:40Speaker 5: lead in the history of baseball.
- 12:42Speaker 4: Nope, Nope, he gone. And by the way, Aja, you
- 12:44Speaker 4: were right on two things.
- 12:45Speaker 3: You were right on John Schneider big manager of the
- 12:47Speaker 3: year and Cal Rally being you said it two months ago.
- 12:50Speaker 4: You said Rally but did sixty homers and he was
- 12:53Speaker 4: the MVP, and I told you never was.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Nope, Aaron Judge is still ahead of Raleigh. Well that
- 13:00Speaker 3: that's gone. Roley's the MVP of the league. He's gonna
- 13:03Speaker 3: win it. He should win it. Sixty home runs? Are
- 13:06Speaker 3: you freaking kidding me?
- 13:08Speaker 4: So?
- 13:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think there's any doubt that Bo Schneider
- 13:10Speaker 3: or Raley are gonna win.
- 13:11Speaker 4: And yes, Aja, you were right. I was wrong. It hurts.
- 13:14Speaker 5: Oh we got okay, wait, I think your audio cutout,
- 13:17Speaker 5: we need it. Can you can we say that again, Jimples,
- 13:19Speaker 5: because I you know, oh might I think my earpiece
- 13:22Speaker 5: went bad or something. But can the Tigers still? Can
- 13:25Speaker 5: the Tigers salvage whatever they have at this point? I've
- 13:29Speaker 5: never seen a team do this ever, Like fifteen and
- 13:32Speaker 5: a half game lead on a team lose it. They're
- 13:35Speaker 5: playing and they just they can't field a bunt, they
- 13:38Speaker 5: can't field a ground ball, they can't get a hit.
- 13:40Speaker 5: It's like, what the heck happened to the team we
- 13:42Speaker 5: saw for three months?
- 13:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, Aj, first of all, you're right, you've
- 13:47Speaker 3: never seen it before, but nobody has. Nobody has ever
- 13:49Speaker 3: seen a team that were ten games ahead on September
- 13:53Speaker 3: six and then lose the division.
- 13:57Speaker 4: It's never happened before in baseball history. And you look
- 14:00Speaker 4: at the Tigers.
- 14:01Speaker 3: You know they were one of those teams, right, they
- 14:04Speaker 3: lost Jackson job and riese Olsen early, right, those were injuries.
- 14:07Speaker 4: But then they had a bizarre trade deadline.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Right, instead of adding an impact piece that you thought
- 14:14Speaker 3: they would because they were in first place, they had
- 14:15Speaker 3: a big lead, They had a really good team.
- 14:18Speaker 4: They just need big guys.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Instead they did the quantity over quality philosophy. Right, If
- 14:25Speaker 3: you remember, they added five pitchers and they all like
- 14:29Speaker 3: mediocre pitchers, and we all just kind of scratched our head.
- 14:33Speaker 3: They added two starting pitchers, right. They added Charlie Morton,
- 14:36Speaker 3: who we all know was done.
- 14:41Speaker 4: By the way, they've already designated for assignment. He gone,
- 14:43Speaker 4: he's now a brave.
- 14:45Speaker 3: They traded for Chris Paddock, who anyone that watched him
- 14:48Speaker 3: with the Twins knew that he wouldn't be an answer.
- 14:51Speaker 3: And then you know, three other relievers they picked up,
- 14:53Speaker 3: and so they changed five of their you know, twelve pitchers.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Like what what do you pitcher? So I mean, what
- 15:01Speaker 4: are you doing here? And that's not just the answer.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Obviously it started a snowball and then it just got
- 15:07Speaker 3: just completely out of control. And then, of course I
- 15:10Speaker 3: think the end of it was Scooball unfortunately throwing the
- 15:14Speaker 3: ball between his legs and then hitting Fry in the
- 15:16Speaker 3: face and then the back, and then he unraveled your
- 15:19Speaker 3: ace because that was your shot. You win that game,
- 15:22Speaker 3: you're in a position, you got a shot. They lost
- 15:24Speaker 3: that game, and that was the season. So this will
- 15:26Speaker 3: go down as one of the biggest collapses in baseball.
- 15:29Speaker 4: History. Unfortunately.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Wow, yet they're still going to make the playoffs. But yes,
- 15:34Speaker 1: the division collapse is crazy for Detroit. The Astro is
- 15:38Speaker 1: giving them a soft landing spot here to at least
- 15:41Speaker 1: still make it to October most likely. Okay, one more
- 15:44Speaker 1: baseball and then one non baseball question for I'll handle
- 15:46Speaker 1: the baseball one. Hey, you were a former general manager
- 15:49Speaker 1: of the Nationals. What do you think of them grabbing
- 15:51Speaker 1: Paul to Boni from the Red Sox who was a
- 15:54Speaker 1: rising star who I'm sure they're pissed that they lose
- 15:57Speaker 1: out on, and trying to have him build the next
- 16:00Speaker 1: great franchise in Washington, d C.
- 16:04Speaker 7: This was a phenomenal decision in signing, and I will
- 16:09Speaker 7: argue this could be the best hire that the Learners
- 16:12Speaker 7: have made since they owned the team.
- 16:15Speaker 3: And I say that because I loved the resume of
- 16:18Speaker 3: where he came from and how he got here. Right,
- 16:21Speaker 3: he played at cal Berkeley, so he's played the game.
- 16:23Speaker 3: He got an NBA at Notre Dame. He's really smart.
- 16:26Speaker 3: And then what he did is he became an area
- 16:30Speaker 3: scout and he grinded it. That is one of the
- 16:32Speaker 3: worst jobs possible, but it's also the job where you
- 16:35Speaker 3: really learn how to evaluate talent.
- 16:37Speaker 4: This is when you know, you get in the woods,
- 16:39Speaker 4: you get humbled, you.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Don't make any money, and you love the game so
- 16:43Speaker 3: much and you learn it. Then he became so good
- 16:45Speaker 3: he became assistant director of Amateur Scouting. Then he got
- 16:48Speaker 3: promoted to director of Amateur Scouting, where he drafted Roman, Anthony,
- 16:52Speaker 3: Marcelo Meyer, Early Campbell, Kyle Teel, all of those guys
- 16:58Speaker 3: under his administration. Then he became vice president of scouting
- 17:01Speaker 3: and player Development and really understood the importance of those
- 17:05Speaker 3: two departments marrying each other. Then he got involved with
- 17:09Speaker 3: the analytics. This is a really bright, smart guy that
- 17:14Speaker 3: has earned this position. I mean to me, it is
- 17:17Speaker 3: the perfect blueprint, gum. This is the track I would
- 17:21Speaker 3: recommend for everybody without a doubt. And he has done it,
- 17:25Speaker 3: and he's got personality, he's you know, how he works
- 17:30Speaker 3: with the ownership group there is going to really.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Decide how successful he can be. It'll be interesting to
- 17:37Speaker 4: see how much power he has in making all of
- 17:40Speaker 4: the decisions.
- 17:41Speaker 3: But I will say this, this is a phenomenal hire
- 17:43Speaker 3: for the Washington Nationals.
- 17:46Speaker 5: Okay, I was going to say the Learners didn't hire you.
- 17:48Speaker 5: That's why you were saying it's their best hire of
- 17:51Speaker 5: all time. But I was just I just had to make.
- 17:53Speaker 3: Sure I'm telling you this guy's track record specially a
- 17:56Speaker 3: j I mean, I mean I could. He's got great
- 17:59Speaker 3: evaluation skills. That's the most important quality you have to have.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Plus he has the people skills. This is a bright
- 18:06Speaker 3: guy with a good baseball background.
- 18:09Speaker 5: Okay, is your son? This is what I want to know.
- 18:11Speaker 5: USC has played nobody this year. Illinois, they're questionable. They're
- 18:15Speaker 5: about to get into the meat of their schedule now
- 18:17Speaker 5: with USC and people that don't know Jim Sun is
- 18:19Speaker 5: the GM of the USC Trojan football team. But what
- 18:22Speaker 5: I want to know is will he disown you as
- 18:24Speaker 5: a father after saying he went to cal Berkeley and
- 18:27Speaker 5: then he went to Notre Dame. So he's really smart.
- 18:29Speaker 5: So is your son gonna call you and say, well, well,
- 18:31Speaker 5: WHOA those are some of our rivals. Dad. Let's take
- 18:34Speaker 5: it easy on people are trying to out recruit and
- 18:36Speaker 5: beat on the football field here.
- 18:39Speaker 3: No, because he's gonna say, guess where I was at
- 18:42Speaker 3: GM first Notre Dame, and that background was huge for
- 18:46Speaker 3: him to be here and for this USC team.
- 18:48Speaker 4: Yes, they haven't played yet.
- 18:51Speaker 3: I agree with that, but understand, this offense is probably
- 18:54Speaker 3: the best in the country and Lincoln Riley is one
- 18:57Speaker 3: of the best offensive minds there are period. They have
- 19:00Speaker 3: two first round wide receivers led by McKay lemon and
- 19:04Speaker 3: Jacoby Lane. They've got two unbelievable NFL running backs. They've
- 19:08Speaker 3: got a quarterback the Trophy conversation. The problem with USC
- 19:13Speaker 3: is gonna be the secondary and are they gonna be
- 19:16Speaker 3: able to stop other teams from scoring when they have
- 19:19Speaker 3: to play the best teams, which are all They've got
- 19:21Speaker 3: ranked teams coming up the next three three games. That's
- 19:25Speaker 3: gonna determine how good they are, and we're gonna find out.
- 19:27Speaker 3: But it's gonna come down to the secondary. It won't
- 19:29Speaker 3: come down to the offense because they're gonna be able
- 19:31Speaker 3: to score on anybody.
- 19:33Speaker 2: And hey, good teams beat bad teams. That's part of
- 19:35Speaker 2: the deal. They're doing it.
- 19:38Speaker 5: Good teams win, great teams cover.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I'm just saying, JB, good stuff, great hit. We'll catch
- 19:44Speaker 1: you soon, Okay.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Yeah, yes, Scott AJ Thanks guys.
- 19:50Speaker 1: In the Weeds is powered by Arena Club Best app
- 19:54Speaker 1: cards by sell Trade Opening up packs it'll never be
- 19:58Speaker 1: the same.
- 19:58Speaker 2: It'll change your world. Trust me. Codis foul, all right.
- 20:01Speaker 1: So let's talk about the athletics rankings of pitching staffs
- 20:07Speaker 1: in the postseason. They took into account that depth at
- 20:11Speaker 1: the back end of that staff doesn't necessarily matter.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Let's look at what matters, right.
- 20:15Speaker 1: The top few starters, the top three four relievers. Some
- 20:19Speaker 1: teams have some depth that'll be used. Others will do
- 20:21Speaker 1: this very small circle of trust. So I'll lay out
- 20:27Speaker 1: what they put rankings wise, and then you guys tell
- 20:30Speaker 1: me where you think they got it right or wrong.
- 20:32Speaker 1: They've got the Dodgers, Phillies, and Mariners in the top
- 20:36Speaker 1: three in that order. Then the Brewers, Padres and Astros four, five, six,
- 20:42Speaker 1: Red Sox, Yankees, Cubs seven eight, nine, Guardians ten.
- 20:46Speaker 2: That's their top ten.
- 20:50Speaker 5: Dodgers won with their bullpen, That's.
- 20:53Speaker 2: What they say.
- 20:55Speaker 1: So Yamamoto snell Otani class. Now he has been good.
- 21:01Speaker 1: It wasn't good last night, but generally I think he's trusted.
- 21:06Speaker 5: But they've also the Diamondbacks have seen him a bunch
- 21:08Speaker 5: of times.
- 21:08Speaker 2: That's probably right.
- 21:10Speaker 1: My thing with the Dodgers, I do think that the
- 21:13Speaker 1: freakout has been high.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Is it last year's bullpen krats?
- 21:17Speaker 1: No, but I do think that they're going to be
- 21:20Speaker 1: able to mix and match that version of Rokie plays.
- 21:25Speaker 1: I think Robleski is going to be counted on. I
- 21:28Speaker 1: think there's enough there. Shean's gonna log beginnings for this team.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Kersh All looked pretty damn good yesterday. I think there's
- 21:36Speaker 1: enough there. But do you think that they're the number
- 21:38Speaker 1: one pitching staff based on what they have with Yamamoto,
- 21:42Speaker 1: snell A, Tany and Glass.
- 21:43Speaker 5: Now, I have a tough time.
- 21:46Speaker 6: I have a tough time not putting the Mariners where
- 21:49Speaker 6: they're where they're going right now. I have a tough
- 21:53Speaker 6: time not putting their staff, their entire thirteen pitchers ahead
- 21:59Speaker 6: of the Dodgers a little bit if you're just going
- 22:00Speaker 6: rotation Dodgers. I just think I think the Dodgers' bullpen
- 22:08Speaker 6: struggles have been glaring, and the struggles have been lower
- 22:13Speaker 6: strikeouts and walks, like the two worst things you could
- 22:16Speaker 6: possibly do. So I feel like I have the Mariners
- 22:20Speaker 6: ahead of them.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Yeah, Gilbert Kirby, do you get any updates on WU yet?
- 22:27Speaker 5: No?
- 22:28Speaker 2: No? Okay, Castillo looked really good, but it was the Rockies.
- 22:34Speaker 5: Have, do you not through the Guardians is higher than ten.
- 22:37Speaker 2: That's why I was asking you guys pick up stuff.
- 22:41Speaker 6: The Astros shouldn't be up there. I think the Yankees.
- 22:44Speaker 6: I think the Yankees are more set up for the
- 22:46Speaker 6: playoffs than now I got. I gotta look at the
- 22:50Speaker 6: list myself. Then the Astros, the Red Sox like they
- 22:57Speaker 6: should be higher, and the Guardians recently, You're right, the
- 23:01Speaker 6: Guardians are They are them again, except now they have
- 23:05Speaker 6: a starting rotation, Like how much same thing we asked
- 23:09Speaker 6: Shil earlier. How much is vote gonna be able to
- 23:12Speaker 6: lean on those starters? Is he gonna say Nope, I'm
- 23:16Speaker 6: going to Heron, I'm going to Gaddis, I'm going to
- 23:19Speaker 6: I'm going to Kate Smith. Like as soon as there's
- 23:22Speaker 6: any kind of hint on anything with a rotation that
- 23:25Speaker 6: you don't trust, they go right to it. And to me,
- 23:29Speaker 6: I think that's where managers, that's where managers make their money.
- 23:33Speaker 6: But I just think I think the Yankees. I get it,
- 23:36Speaker 6: the regression from their bullpen, I get it. Devin Williams
- 23:38Speaker 6: isn't the guy they traded for, But their worst is
- 23:44Speaker 6: a ton of strikeouts with a ton of Walks. So
- 23:48Speaker 6: that to me is yes, they've struggled, but I don't
- 23:51Speaker 6: think they're worse than the Astra. The Astros are struggle
- 23:54Speaker 6: bus right now, up and down. They're hoping that Franber
- 23:57Speaker 6: Valdez picks them up tonight.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Yeah, the Astros should be way lower.
- 24:02Speaker 5: So that's why it also doesn't make any.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Sense, right, but this was done several days ago.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Yeah, this was put together maybe four or five days ago,
- 24:10Speaker 1: and then they put out the rankings list. So yes,
- 24:12Speaker 1: I agree the Astros would get moved down.
- 24:15Speaker 2: We're good with the Padres there.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Based on the bullpen in the five spot, I would
- 24:20Speaker 1: I would consider putting them above the Brewers. The Brewers
- 24:23Speaker 1: have a lot of question marks with who's coming back
- 24:25Speaker 1: bullpen wise. Is Miguil gonna be okay coming back? So
- 24:28Speaker 1: he had the little setback, you should be back. There's
- 24:32Speaker 1: others working their way back, right, Logan Henderson, what are
- 24:36Speaker 1: they doing with the mizz And like the starters are good,
- 24:40Speaker 1: but like pre stir Chad Patrick, they're good.
- 24:43Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I think the Padres starters have just as much upside
- 24:47Speaker 1: as those guys. Freddie P obviously leading the way, but
- 24:50Speaker 1: I might flip flop the Brewers and Padres'.
- 24:54Speaker 6: Like I'd like to look at like the fielding independent
- 24:57Speaker 6: stats of the Brewers STAF because that those defenders absolutely
- 25:04Speaker 6: pick it and I think they raise the level of
- 25:05Speaker 6: that pitching. And so that's where sometimes in the playoffs
- 25:10Speaker 6: we talk about the little things.
- 25:11Speaker 5: I get it.
- 25:12Speaker 6: But the best way to get somebody out is to
- 25:15Speaker 6: strike them out. The best way to score run is
- 25:18Speaker 6: a home run. And I think those things really exemplify
- 25:23Speaker 6: or multiply and like start showing up in the playoffs.
- 25:27Speaker 6: So that's where I would agree with you. I think
- 25:29Speaker 6: the Padres bullpen has an opportunity to just strike out
- 25:33Speaker 6: the world and may push ahead of the push ahead
- 25:38Speaker 6: of the Brewers. But an ace at the top is
- 25:40Speaker 6: hard to it's hard to fight against. And the Brewers
- 25:43Speaker 6: have an ace in Peralta.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Pavetta is really good. But I get what you're saying.
- 25:47Speaker 1: I got two more to bring up who can make
- 25:49Speaker 1: a case for being higher. Maybe I'm off on this one,
- 25:52Speaker 1: but out of the fifteen teams that they still had
- 25:54Speaker 1: in contention.
- 25:56Speaker 2: They have the Blue Jays fourteenth.
- 25:58Speaker 1: They said they have the highest dra among these teams
- 26:00Speaker 1: and they're bottom ten in barrow percentage, so they're getting
- 26:04Speaker 1: hit hard. Right again, Let's keep in mind that when
- 26:07Speaker 1: you're putting those percentages together, that's for the whole staff.
- 26:09Speaker 2: You're going to shrink the staff a little bit.
- 26:11Speaker 1: But do you believe in Bieber Gossman, Sureser Bassett if
- 26:15Speaker 1: he returns in time, Brio's probably out of the bullpen
- 26:20Speaker 1: Is Savage and then I mean Yarriel Rodriguez, Brendan Little, Sir,
- 26:24Speaker 1: Anthony Domagaz, Jeff Hoffman.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Should they be higher?
- 26:28Speaker 5: They should probably be higher than be higher than the Tigers, Cubs.
- 26:31Speaker 5: What about the Cubs, So.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Let's play this game.
- 26:34Speaker 1: They should be higher than probably three four teams on
- 26:36Speaker 1: here that they're below. No Blue Jays, Okay, Blue Jays
- 26:40Speaker 1: or Mets, Tigers, Cubs. I think they're they're not getting
- 26:46Speaker 1: enough love, That's what I'm saying. So the Blue Jays
- 26:50Speaker 1: should be higher than the Mets, the Tigers. Right the Cubs.
- 26:56Speaker 5: Tigers are going to say, oh, school makes up for
- 26:57Speaker 5: at all.
- 26:58Speaker 1: No, I'm sorry one guy, and this is for the
- 27:01Speaker 1: whole postseason. Okay, do you have enough pitching to get
- 27:06Speaker 1: yourself through the tournament. I think the Blue Jays are
- 27:09Speaker 1: being slighted a little bit too much here. Is it
- 27:11Speaker 1: a strength of the team, not necessarily.
- 27:16Speaker 5: Yeah, Gossman Beaver, you Savage if he's a starter, right
- 27:22Speaker 5: for the long haul, Barrio sures are lower for the
- 27:25Speaker 5: long haul it is.
- 27:27Speaker 1: I mean, Brio says had a tough year, but I'm
- 27:31Speaker 1: talking about.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree. I think I think they're being slighted
- 27:37Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 27:37Speaker 1: And then I've got one other team that I think
- 27:39Speaker 1: is being slighted a bit by far. The strength of
- 27:41Speaker 1: the Reds is they're pitching. They're ranked eleven, and I've
- 27:44Speaker 1: got them above a few teams here as well. I've
- 27:47Speaker 1: watched a lot of Reds baseball lately. Their offense can't execute,
- 27:51Speaker 1: for crap, but they've got really good stuff.
- 27:54Speaker 2: A lot of their guys right, Green.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Abbots, Singers, Okay Lodolo, Nick Martinez, Ashar At Santition, Pegan,
- 28:01Speaker 1: Chase Burns, Lttel. No, I'm not saying it's top five,
- 28:05Speaker 1: but I don't I think they should be a little higher.
- 28:08Speaker 2: They're ranked eleven.
- 28:12Speaker 6: I mean, yeah, i'd say above the Cubs, but they're
- 28:14Speaker 6: not above the Red Sox. I don't even think they're
- 28:17Speaker 6: above the Astros. Their starting rotation is the starting rotation
- 28:21Speaker 6: is cool, it's awesome, but maybe maybe they reached the
- 28:29Speaker 6: top eight.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Maybe Okay, for me, it's above the Cubs and the
- 28:34Speaker 1: Astros in terms of what's ahead of them.
- 28:38Speaker 2: That's right, Okay, cool. Let us know thoughts. We told
- 28:43Speaker 2: you about the rankings.
