Speaker 1: Chapter four, in which Phileas Fogg astounds pass Partout, his servant.
• 0:08
Speaker 1: Having won twenty guineas at whist and taken leave of
• 0:12
Speaker 1: his friends, Phileas Fogg, at twenty five minutes past seven,
• 0:16
Speaker 1: left the Reform Club. Passepartout, who had conscientiously studied the
• 0:21
Speaker 1: program of his duties, was more than surprised to see
• 0:25
Speaker 1: his master, guilty of the inexactness of appearing at this
• 0:28
Speaker 1: unaccustomed hour, for according to rule, he was not due
• 0:33
Speaker 1: in Savole Row until precisely midnight. Mister Fogg repaired to
• 0:38
Speaker 1: his bedroom and called out passe Partout. Passepartout did not reply.
• 0:44
Speaker 1: It could not be he who was called. It was
• 0:47
Speaker 1: not the right hour, passe Partout, repeated mister Fogg, without
• 0:53
Speaker 1: raising his voice. Passepartout made his appearance. I've called you twice,
• 1:00
Speaker 1: observed his master. But it is not midnight, responded the other,
• 1:06
Speaker 1: showing his watch. I know it. I don't blame you.
• 1:10
Speaker 1: We start for Dover and Calais in ten minutes. A
• 1:15
Speaker 1: puzzled grin overspread Passepartout's round face. Clearly he had not
• 1:20
Speaker 1: comprehended his master. Monsieur is going to leave home. Yes,
• 1:26
Speaker 1: returned Phileas Fogg. We are going around the world. Passepartout
• 1:33
Speaker 1: opened wide, his eyes, raised his eyebrows, held up his hands,
• 1:37
Speaker 1: and seemed about to collapse. So overcome was he with
• 1:40
Speaker 1: stupefied astonishment. Round the world, he murmured, in eighty days,
• 1:48
Speaker 1: responded mister Fogg. So we haven't a moment to lose
• 1:53
Speaker 1: what the trunks, gasped Passepartout, unconsciously, swaying his head from
• 1:58
Speaker 1: right to left. We'll have no trunks, only a carpet
• 2:03
Speaker 1: bag with two shirts and three pairs of stockings for
• 2:06
Speaker 1: me and same for you. We'll buy our clothes on
• 2:10
Speaker 1: the way. Bring down my mackintosh and traveling cloak and
• 2:14
Speaker 1: some stout shoes. Though we shall do little walking. Make haste.
• 2:20
Speaker 1: Passepartout tried to reply, but could not. He went out,
• 2:24
Speaker 1: mounted to his own room, fell into a chair and muttered,
• 2:28
Speaker 1: that's good. That is and I, who wanted to remain quiet,
• 2:35
Speaker 1: He mechanically set about making the preparations for departure around
• 2:39
Speaker 1: the world in eighty days. Was his master a fool? No?
• 2:46
Speaker 1: Was this a joke? Then they were going to Dover, good,
• 2:51
Speaker 1: to Calais good again after all, Passepartout, who had been
• 2:55
Speaker 1: away from France five years, would not be sorry to
• 2:59
Speaker 1: set foot on his knee of soil again. Perhaps they
• 3:02
Speaker 1: would go as far as Parised, and it would do
• 3:04
Speaker 1: his eyes good to see Paris once more. But surely
• 3:08
Speaker 1: a gentleman so chary of his steps would stop there,
• 3:11
Speaker 1: no doubt. But then it was none the less true
• 3:15
Speaker 1: that he was going away, this so domestic person hitherto.
• 3:20
Speaker 1: By eight o'clock Passepartout had packed the modest carpet bag
• 3:24
Speaker 1: containing the wardrobes of his master and himself. Then, still
• 3:28
Speaker 1: troubled in mind, he carefully shut the door of his
• 3:31
Speaker 1: room and descended to mister Fogg. Mister Fogg was quite ready.
• 3:36
Speaker 1: Under his arm might have been observed a red bound
• 3:38
Speaker 1: copy of Bradshaw's Continental Railway Steam Transit and General Guide,
• 3:44
Speaker 1: with its timetables showing the arrival and departure of steamers
• 3:47
Speaker 1: and railways. He took the carpet bag, opened it, and
• 3:52
Speaker 1: slipped into it a goodly roll of Bank of England notes,
• 3:55
Speaker 1: which would pass wherever he might go. You have forgotten nothing,
• 4:00
Speaker 1: asked he nothing. Monsieur my Mackintosh and Cloak, here they
• 4:06
Speaker 1: are good. Take this carpet bag, handing it to Passpartout.
• 4:12
Speaker 1: Take good care of it, for there are twenty thousand
• 4:15
Speaker 1: pounds in it. Passpartou nearly dropped the bag as if
• 4:20
Speaker 1: the twenty thousand pounds were in gold, and weighed him down.
• 4:24
Speaker 1: Master and man then descended the street. Door was double locked,
• 4:28
Speaker 1: and at the end of Savile Row they took a
• 4:31
Speaker 1: cab and drove rapidly to Charing Cross. The cab stopped
• 4:35
Speaker 1: before the railway station in twenty minutes past eight. Passepartout
• 4:39
Speaker 1: jumped off the box and followed his master, who, after
• 4:42
Speaker 1: paying the cabman, was about to enter the station when
• 4:46
Speaker 1: a poor beggar woman with a child in her arms,
• 4:49
Speaker 1: her naked feet smeared with mud, her head covered with
• 4:53
Speaker 1: a wretched bonnet from which hung a tattered feather, and
• 4:56
Speaker 1: her shoulders shrouded in a ragged shawl, approached and mournfully
• 5:01
Speaker 1: asked for alms. Mister Fogg took out the twenty guineas
• 5:06
Speaker 1: he had just won it whist and headed them to
• 5:08
Speaker 1: the beggars, saying, here, my good woman, I am glad
• 5:12
Speaker 1: that I met you, and passed on. Passepartout had a
• 5:17
Speaker 1: moist sensation about the eyes. His master's action touched his
• 5:22
Speaker 1: susceptible heart. Two first class tickets for Paris having been
• 5:27
Speaker 1: speedily purchased. Mister Fogg was crossing the station to the
• 5:31
Speaker 1: train when he perceived his five friends of the Reform. Well, gentlemen,
• 5:36
Speaker 1: said he I'm off, you see, and if you will
• 5:40
Speaker 1: examine my passport when I get back, you will be
• 5:43
Speaker 1: able to judge whether I have accomplished the journey agreed upon. Oh,
• 5:48
Speaker 1: that would be quite unnecessary, mister Fogg said Ralph politely.
• 5:53
Speaker 1: We will trust your word as a gentleman of honor.
• 5:57
Speaker 1: You do not forget when you are doing London, and
• 6:00
Speaker 1: again asked Stuart in eighty days. On Saturday, the twenty
• 6:06
Speaker 1: first of December eighteen seventy two, at a quarter before
• 6:10
Speaker 1: nine p m. Good bye, gentlemen. Phileas Fogg and his
• 6:16
Speaker 1: servants seated themselves in a first class carriage at twenty
• 6:19
Speaker 1: minutes before nine. Five minutes later, the whistle screamed and
• 6:23
Speaker 1: the train slowly glided out of the station. The night
• 6:27
Speaker 1: was dark and a fine, steady rain was falling. Phileas Fogg,
• 6:32
Speaker 1: snugly ensconced in his corner, did not open his lips.
• 6:36
Speaker 1: Pass Partou, not yet recovered from his stupefaction, clung mechanically
• 6:41
Speaker 1: to the carpet bag with its enormous treasure. Just as
• 6:46
Speaker 1: the train was whirling through Sydenham Passepartout suddenly uttered a
• 6:50
Speaker 1: cry of despair. What's the matter, asked mister Fogg. Alas
• 6:56
Speaker 1: in my hurry, I I forgot to turn off the
• 7:02
Speaker 1: gas in my room. Very well, young man, returned mister
• 7:07
Speaker 1: Fogg coolly. It will burn at your expense. End of
