Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So surprise election pledged from Labor yesterday. They promised that
- 0:03Speaker 1: retirement village residents will get their money back within three
- 0:06Speaker 1: months of leaving if it's elected. There was a big signature,
- 0:09Speaker 1: big petition, forty thousand signatures went to Parliament. Here's hipkins.
- 0:14Speaker 2: We will make sure the law has changed so that
- 0:16Speaker 2: you get your money back within three months, and that
- 0:19Speaker 2: all residents will get their money back as well, including
- 0:23Speaker 2: those who are currently in the villages.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Brian Pete, Retirement Village Residents Association National President, was at
- 0:31Speaker 1: Parliament yesterday, joins me this morning. Brian, good morning, Good morning, Ryan,
- 0:35Speaker 1: how are you very well? Thank you, you'll be pleased
- 0:37Speaker 1: with that promise.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Yesterday was massive, Rian, it really was. We've been pushing
- 0:43Speaker 3: for this review of this Act for eight years and
- 0:46Speaker 3: to hear that announcement from the Labor Party and yes
- 0:49Speaker 3: they're in opposition, but was just huge. And this is
- 0:54Speaker 3: what we've really been pushing for. For our repayment of
- 0:56Speaker 3: our moneys no longer than three months and it must
- 0:59Speaker 3: apply totis. That's all we've ever asked for in this
- 1:02Speaker 3: review of that and National or the coalition government now
- 1:07Speaker 3: has to step up. That's the challenge because we're not
- 1:10Speaker 3: going to give up on this review. Believe me, right.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Now, I was led to believe that the coalition that is,
- 1:16Speaker 1: we're going to do twelve months.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you're right. So currently there there's no date
- 1:23Speaker 3: in the in the in the current act for repayment
- 1:26Speaker 3: of our dollars at all. So now the coalition have
- 1:29Speaker 3: suggested twelve months time from maximum timeframe of twelve months
- 1:33Speaker 3: to repay our dollars, which is a step forward because
- 1:36Speaker 3: I've never wanted a date ever. But we're saying, sorry,
- 1:40Speaker 3: that's not good enough. We want the money no longer
- 1:42Speaker 3: than three to four months, and it must apply to
- 1:45Speaker 3: existing residents because currently the current proposal does not apply
- 1:49Speaker 3: to us who are in villages now, and it's just discrimination.
- 1:52Speaker 3: That the worst scenario, and it's kind. We just can't
- 1:57Speaker 3: allow it to happen.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Because you have hamstrung. But is there problem because the
- 2:00Speaker 1: other issue that it was raised with me about this
- 2:02Speaker 1: is that there's the big operators and then there's the
- 2:05Speaker 1: smaller operators. And this if the smaller operators can't on
- 2:08Speaker 1: sell the units, then they are potentially going to see
- 2:11Speaker 1: themselves go bust.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Well, there's no evidence of that Ryan at all, and
- 2:16Speaker 3: it's the RBA, which is the parent body for most
- 2:19Speaker 3: of the operators. If they can produce evidence that this
- 2:21Speaker 3: will happen, they will have to listen to it. But
- 2:23Speaker 3: there's no evidence whatsoever. Because New South Wales they've had
- 2:26Speaker 3: legislation in place for twenty seven years the operators must
- 2:30Speaker 3: pay back in six months and there's no operator has
- 2:33Speaker 3: failed because of it. And the other aspect is the
- 2:37Speaker 3: average for repayment now is about six months, So why
- 2:42Speaker 3: can't the government say, well, how about we do six
- 2:45Speaker 3: months and then we'll consider something along those lines. But
- 2:48Speaker 3: to say twelve months, it's just not acceptable and to
- 2:51Speaker 3: not apply to existing reasons is just awful.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Brian Pete, Retirement Village Present Association, National President.
