- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, welcome to the steps of my porch.
- 0:31Beaufort and I are sitting here and this has been a very
- 0:35different week that we've had. Beaufort had surgery on Monday
- 0:40to remove this little skin tag off of his leg in the, it's on
- 0:43like on the back corner of his leg.
- 0:45And it got pulled and it got bloody behind it.
- 0:50And of course, instantaneously got infected seemingly in 24
- 0:54hours from the time it happened to the time that the vet could
- 0:56see him. And so then he had to have the
- 0:59surgery and at the same time, because he's always into
- 1:03everything, he hurt his ear, the flappy part of his ear.
- 1:07So he's got like a little hematoma in it and it's very
- 1:10swollen. And we have to keep him quiet,
- 1:12which you can only imagine how that works.
- 1:14So they've got him on antibiotics and anti
- 1:17inflammatories and something to for pain relief that kind of
- 1:20sedates him. And we've since cut that and
- 1:23back 'cause it was making him like he was, you know, out of
- 1:26his mind. And this is really something to
- 1:31behold because I have to say, I've had a lot of dogs in my
- 1:36life. A lot of dogs.
- 1:37Like ever since I was little, we were a dog family.
- 1:40We've, I've never been without a dog, one way, shape or form.
- 1:45And the fact that he was out of it, the fact that he wasn't with
- 1:50me really gave me insight into how much he actually is with me.
- 1:55So I realized he, you know, he's here on the farm with me every
- 1:59day. He's here while I work.
- 2:01He is either walking with me while I'm talking to everybody
- 2:04or he's watching me. He'll sit on the on the porch
- 2:09and watch me walk laps after a while when he gets tired or it's
- 2:12too hot, But he's always with me.
- 2:14And like right now he's leaning up against me.
- 2:17He's, you know, tucked in. He's I've got my arm around him
- 2:21while we're recording this. And I wasn't able to do this all
- 2:24week. And it really got me thinking
- 2:25about how God has provided us with just such a gift in our
- 2:33animals. And sometimes we don't think
- 2:35about it. Sometimes we just don't
- 2:36recognize it in the way we think.
- 2:38It's a chore to take care of them and it becomes really,
- 2:43really, really challenging because we think, oh, this is so
- 2:47much work. This is so much work.
- 2:48But what they give us back is tremendous.
- 2:51It is an absolute, tremendous gift.
- 2:53And you know, I have two dogs. I have Lucy and Beaufort, and
- 2:56Lucy's 7 lbs. And Beaufort is sadly 123 right
- 3:00now and needs to lose 10 lbs because he gained it.
- 3:03My fault completely because I was giving him coconut oil for
- 3:07his skin. And so we can get him off
- 3:09Apoquel and it worked except that he gained some weight.
- 3:13So now we have to not give him as much coconut oil, Kim, it's
- 3:17too much. As the vet said to me, so
- 3:21beautiful coat. He commented on how gorgeous his
- 3:23coat is, but yet got to take him off of it.
- 3:25Anyway. So the point is, yes, there are
- 3:28a lot of work. Yes, everything's a lot of work.
- 3:31Yes, this farm is a lot of work. All the animals, the chickens,
- 3:36everything takes effort. Everything takes effort.
- 3:38My friends, taking a shower takes effort, but that's what
- 3:42we're supposed to do as human beings.
- 3:45Put in the effort, put in the the the time this dog is the way
- 3:50he is because I put in the time with him when he was a puppy.
- 3:53I taught him to not go after the chickens.
- 3:57My husband spent time with him when he was when the chicks were
- 4:00babies, making him understand you take care of the chicks.
- 4:04He would make him lie down and the chicks on his body so he
- 4:08could just be with them and realize they were his.
- 4:11And it worked brilliantly. And now he would go after
- 4:15anything to protect these chickens.
- 4:17He's really he. He's a shadow to me.
- 4:23And when he wasn't there all week, it really made me
- 4:25appreciate. I don't care that he drools on
- 4:28the floor. I don't care that he is sloppy.
- 4:31I don't care that he sheds. What I care about is that I look
- 4:35for the good stuff in the effort that I make with him.
- 4:39So like right now, I'm overlooking the pond.
- 4:41I'm watching the chickens across the pond, free range.
- 4:44All the birds are flying in. We have a new blue Jay that's
- 4:47showing up to get peanuts. All of this takes effort, but
- 4:51the joy it brings just sitting here recording this to you is
- 4:54worth all the effort. And I have to remember every
- 4:57day. That's not something I can take
- 4:59for granted. I have to acknowledge it and
- 5:01remember it so that I know to work for it.
- 5:04Because if I just chalk it up, then I'm not going to want the
- 5:08work. I'm going to complain about it.
- 5:09So don't chalk it up. Remember how great it feels to
- 5:14be able to have that and say, wow, OK, that those little hugs,
- 5:18those little kisses, they all matter.
- 5:21Those dogs that do that with you, they matter.
- 5:25You know, as I sit here and I'm petting him and he's his fur is,
- 5:29you know, it's summertime, He's shedding, his fur is coming out.
- 5:33I don't care. I love him to death.
- 5:35All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 5:38will see you tomorrow. Bye.
