- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Hello, this is Jamie Bridges, and thank you so much for joining us for this week's podcast.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: All of our services are inspired and built straight from the Bible.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Let's get into this week's message recorded at Life Community Church.
- 0:16SPEAKER_03: Guys, we're in 1 Corinthians, and uh hey, there's no way these next three weeks I'm gonna get through uh 14, 15, and 16.
- 0:22SPEAKER_03: So in the summer, or summer, good night, in the fall, we are doing uh a series called Be the Church where we're gonna readdress some of the things that we're talking about today.
- 0:32SPEAKER_03: Uh so I'm gonna give a couple shirts out.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: In the first service, I didn't have rubber bands on them.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: So when I threw them, I it was a good toss, I promise you.
- 0:40SPEAKER_03: It was a good toss, but it kind of went like this.
- 0:43SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna give one to Gavin first.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I need someone way higher.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: Oh I mean, you used to play baseball, so man.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: What do you think of that, Johnny?
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: Is that good?
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: I need to ice it now.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Wow, wow.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Jim.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Thanks, Jim.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: Hey, 1 Corinthians chapter 12.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: We're let's let's recap real quick.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: It says this the spiritual gift is is given to each of us so we can help one another.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: This is super important as we've been in this series uh talking about this.
- 1:29SPEAKER_03: Like, why do we do what we do?
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: This is these are the questions we're constantly asking, not just as a church, but we make up the church.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: And I need us to think beyond, you know, 10 to 11, 5 o'clock to 7 on Sunday nights, Wednesday nights small group.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: I need us to think outside of those time frames when God is asking us to be the church.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: And here's what he's saying up front.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: I've given you these things.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: You can see this in chapter 12, verse 8 through 10.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: Here's some of the spiritual gifts: words of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, different kinds of tongues, interpretation of tongues.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: He says in verse 11, it is the one and only spirit who distributes all these gifts.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: He alone decides which gift each person should have.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: He's saying, listen, you don't have to manufacture the gifts.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: The Spirit distributes as he wills, as he wants.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: And Paul doesn't stop at that.
- 2:27SPEAKER_03: We continue to see in verse 28, hey, there's parts that God has appointed for the church.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: First, the apostles, second prophets, third teachers, those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, those who speak in unknown languages.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: He's saying up front, listen, this is this is a list.
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: And you can read about in Ephesians chapter 4, 1 Peter chapter 4, you know, Romans chapter 12.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: Paul is actually, he seems less interested in giving us a list or a catalog of gifts and more interested in how these gifts should function.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: Okay, so for example, if I'm if I have something going on in my body, I need to go to someone who has the gift of faith or the gift of healing.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: I don't want to go to someone who's like, I'm doubting whether God heals.
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: I'm doubting whether God loves me.
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna go to you for encouragement or advice, which means, guys, we gotta know how we're gifted.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: If he's the distributor, we can no longer have spiritual insecurity when it comes to like, oh, this gift isn't for me.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: It's probably for so-and-so.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: It's not what it says.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: And for the person in this room that maybe you've been raised this way or you still think this way and think that the gifts stopped at a certain point.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: I would just beg the question of if they stopped, then how are we still being saved?
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: It's the greatest miracle of all.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: An old becoming new, a heart of stone being softened, forgiving people, like that's a miracle of itself because on my own, I'm a selfish dude.
- 4:04SPEAKER_03: I care a lot about myself.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: And only God can change that.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: He is the one that does that.
- 4:11SPEAKER_03: So if we're if we're saying they ceased, or we're saying they no longer exist, we don't get to decide when and where that happens.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: So the question then turns how do we function now that he's given those gifts?
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: And I think this is where we've made mistakes as the American church.
- 4:30SPEAKER_03: This is hard for us because, you know, as the American church, we take in consumer mindset.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: This consumer mindset is did I like the worship?
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: How did the message make me feel?
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: Was the song, did it hit me right?
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: And so all of a sudden it's about what I get and never about what I'm being.
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: So now all of a sudden we've based it off of everything else we do.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: And we're going to a restaurant, I'm giving a little Yelp review on whether it's good or bad.
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: I'm going and doing all these things, like whether that experience was great.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: Oh, I went here, I went there.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: Was that a good experience?
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: And you're relaying that, right?
- 5:10SPEAKER_03: Hey, who's been to Holiday World?
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: Who's been to Disney?
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: We want to give advice when people have been there.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: And we consume, consume, consume.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: And so we can speak to that.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: Yep, that's a great restaurant, really good service, great experience, all these things.
- 5:21SPEAKER_03: And then we come into church and we're supposed to check that at the door and go, nope, we're gonna come into church and we're going to bring our gifts that God has given us.
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: Okay?
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: This is what he's talking about.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: And in chapter 14, let me just say what Paul is teaching continues, right?
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: Because chapter 12, he says, listen, you have spiritual gifts.
- 5:42SPEAKER_03: Chapter 13 says, those spiritual gifts have to be done in love.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: If they're not done in love, you're you're noisy, you're clangy.
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: That's all people hear.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: And we understand this.
- 5:53SPEAKER_03: Symbols, just I'm just banging them right now, right?
- 5:56SPEAKER_03: Doesn't matter what my gift is, all you're hearing is the noise.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: He's saying, when you have gifts and you do them not in love, that's what people hear.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: And then he comes to this point in 14 and he says, use your gifts to build people up.
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: That's why we do them.
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: We use gifts so people are built up.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: And this is this is a big discipleship question.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: How can the Holy Spirit use my life to strengthen someone else?
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: Like, what if we ask that?
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: How can the Holy Spirit use my life to strengthen someone else?
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: Well, what's that do?
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: It removes the consumer mindset and brings in ownership.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: You can't just be a consumer now.
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: You can't just be someone in the stands, you're a participant in what God is asking of you.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: And when we get to 14, they love this so much to the point it was chaos.
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: Now I was raised in the 80s, okay?
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: A Methodist church where the pastor started feeling different about the Holy Spirit.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: He went little, he went a little like, whoa, he went over here.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: He went from Methodist to like way over here, right?
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: And I've been in services, like swinging from chandeliers.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: That ain't just talk.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: That stuff really happened.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: In fact, I would say me and Kelly on some levels have have some PTSD.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: Where people are like, I feel like the Lord says, like, that's that you lead with that conversation is pretty dangerous.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: It's dangerous because I'm like, I want to I want to check that with scripture.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: And Paul, what is happening in chapter 14, it's chaos.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: What he is addressing is chaotic.
- 7:43SPEAKER_03: What he is addressing is some crazy things that are going on.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: And again, he's reminded them.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: Hey, listen, every every single one of you matter.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: Like we know this.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: Chapter 12, he already said this.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: Every believer matters, you're part of the body of Christ.
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: Each of you is a part of it.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: Like he's already said all these things.
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: He's destroying spiritual comparison, that it's everybody else and not you.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: He's destroying all this.
- 8:05SPEAKER_03: He says, Listen, you're the body, you're part of it.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: Like he's bringing all of that in.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: And again, he's he's saying these things.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: And this is he's saying things that spiritually breaks pride.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: You know the thing that the Lord is always trying to do in our life is to break pride.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: It's the number one contention, it's it's what got the devil kicked out of heaven.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: Pride.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: The number one thing you will always battle is pride.
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: It's the root of everything.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: Now, where it goes, what it's built on, pride, that's the downfall.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: It's like weeds.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: You're like, how did that weed form when I put stuff on it?
- 8:48SPEAKER_03: I even burned it, but it came back.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: And it's a crazier weed than before.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: That's what happens with pride.
- 8:53SPEAKER_03: If you build it on pride, the weeds and the things that come from your life is chaotic.
- 8:59SPEAKER_03: It's never pretty.
- 9:00SPEAKER_03: You don't look at a weed and go, huh, I'm gonna keep it.
- 9:03SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna trim around it.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: You know why?
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: Because it's not pretty, it's awful looking.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: This is pride.
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: This is you're always gonna contend.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: And this is what Paul is addressing is devastating to spiritual pride because you can be gifted without being mature.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: That's what he's saying.
- 9:22SPEAKER_03: He said, you can prophesy and still lack love.
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: You can speak in tongues all day long and still be a gossip.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: This is what he's addressing.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: He's saying, listen, you can you can have tremendous faith, but if you're not loving, he's saying spiritual gifts demonstrate the spirit's power.
- 9:42SPEAKER_03: Spiritual fruit demonstrates the spirit's work of our character.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: What that means is that when you go back to school after a summer, you didn't just go to camp to experience it.
- 9:55SPEAKER_03: You went to camp so it radically changed you.
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: So that when you showed up to school, they said something's different about you.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: And you don't say, Oh, I went to camp.
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: You go, I encountered Jesus at camp.
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: I went to Michigan.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: I went and did this.
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: I've been reading.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: You want people to see, here's what happened.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: You don't say, I go to a church, because now people are looking at the church.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: You don't say, Oh, I have a friend named so-and-so who's discipling me.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: Now all of a sudden all eyes are on that person.
- 10:25SPEAKER_03: You say, I can only change because of what Jesus has done.
- 10:29SPEAKER_03: Like if it's not that, it's always gonna be about something else.
- 10:34SPEAKER_03: The next cool thing, the next technology, the next this, all of these things.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: And what Paul is addressing again, spiritual gifts demonstrate the spirit's power.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Spiritual fruit demonstrates he's the one changing us.
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: He's the one that's molding us.
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: Doesn't mean there's an arrival moment.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: Doesn't mean one day you no longer have to work on things, it means you're becoming.
- 10:59SPEAKER_03: So when we get to chapter 14, again, he's not giving some random teaching about prophecy and speaking in tongues.
- 11:06SPEAKER_03: He's addressing a church where spiritual gifts are active, but when they get together, it's become disorderly.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: Competitive.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: Focus on individual things and not building up the church.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: Again, we've we've seen some of this.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: He's addressed hard things, you guys.
- 11:25SPEAKER_03: Hard things.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: In chapter 14, the basic problem seems to be everybody wants to participate, but not everyone is thinking about whether what they are doing is helping everybody else.
- 11:41SPEAKER_03: In fact, they're not thinking about everybody else, they're thinking about the spotlight of their gift.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: And this is what we need to see.
- 11:50SPEAKER_03: And this is probably the biggest hurdle for the American church making it about us.
- 11:56SPEAKER_03: Making it about us.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: And so we get to chapter 14, verse 1, and he says, This is the goal.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: Let love be your highest goal, but you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives.
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: Paul isn't saying we avoid spiritual gifts, he's actually saying your spiritual gift isn't a spotlight, it's a tool.
- 12:16SPEAKER_03: And we use tools to build things.
- 12:20SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 12:21SPEAKER_03: We sometimes make it a spotlight.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: He's asking us to make it a tool.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: Because when I have tools, I build things.
- 12:28SPEAKER_03: If you came in to me and said, I have the right tools, there's the project over there.
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: We're gonna go, let's get to work.
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: We got everything we need.
- 12:34SPEAKER_03: He's saying, now let's build something.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: He didn't say there's a bunch of flashlights, let's go look around.
- 12:39SPEAKER_03: That's not what we're doing.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: We're building something.
- 12:42SPEAKER_03: And he's saying, this is a lifestyle.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: This is this is not an experience, this is not an event, this is a lifestyle that we have to.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: And he uses three words.
- 12:52SPEAKER_03: He says, given through and for.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: He says, this is given by the Holy Spirit to work through believers for the benefit of others.
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: It should be something we're always testing.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: If God has gifted me and I have a word for someone, is it building up the person I'm saying it to?
- 13:13SPEAKER_03: If it's building me, it's from me.
- 13:17SPEAKER_03: It's from me.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: This is what he's addressing.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: Whatever gift the Spirit has given you, are you using it to build up the body of Christ?
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: See, the evidence of a powerful church isn't merely what happened in this room, it's what happens in our lives after we leave this room.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: When we leave here, did marriages get stronger?
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: Did someone hear about Jesus?
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: Did anybody repent?
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: Did believers become more like Christ?
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: Is there spiritual fruit?
- 13:59SPEAKER_03: Because this is what he's addressing in chapter 14.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: He says this in verse 3.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, comforts them.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: He says, Did the way I follow Jesus, did it build people up?
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: That's what he's asking.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: And Paul gives this framework at the beginning of chapter 14 for us from Monday through Saturday.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: Actually, what I'm sharing with you today is for tomorrow.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: It's easy right here to follow Christ.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: It's easy tonight to follow Christ.
- 14:39SPEAKER_03: Students, it's easy to come into church and say, Hey, I believe in Jesus.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna wear the shirt.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna let everybody know.
- 14:45SPEAKER_03: Cool, let's do it tomorrow too.
- 14:48SPEAKER_03: Let's make sure on Wednesday, when we're coming into work and the atmosphere needs to change, then we're changing it.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: Instead of going like I hate Wednesdays, so and so is there.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: And when I show up, it's just there's tension in the room, and all these things are happening.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: It's like, well, change the culture instead of complaining about it.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: While you're strengthening your spirit on the way to work, let the strength of the spirit flow out of.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: Stop saying things like, Well, well, I just slipped and made a mistake.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: You didn't slip.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: What was inside your heart came out.
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: Well, it was a joke.
- 15:27SPEAKER_03: You know, there's an element of truth in every joke that you tell.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: Well, I'm not really racist.
- 15:33SPEAKER_03: Well, then why are you selling racist jokes?
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: And if you're leading by saying you're not really racist, it probably means you're racist.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: Well, it was just a mistake.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: It was just an accident.
- 15:47SPEAKER_03: Well, it doesn't accidentally come out.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: Actually, it's who you are.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: I know you don't want to hear it.
- 15:55SPEAKER_03: Because here's here's what spirit-filled Christianity isn't demonstrated merely by what happens when I'm worshiping, it's demonstrated by what comes out when I'm frustrated.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: When it didn't go my way.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: Well, I thought I was gonna be going here.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: Listen, how I respond when I'm frustrated is the real me.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: If my attitude when I'm frustrated is to go and find someone to help me pray, or to help, or to dig deeper in scripture, then I'll tell you I'm doing the right things.
- 16:26SPEAKER_03: But if my attitude is to gossip and to slander and to complain and to call so-and-so, and feel better about myself by getting it off of my chest, you just revealed exactly who you were.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: Do you know getting it off your chest is not good?
- 16:44SPEAKER_03: Because now you've just involved someone into a situation that should have never been involved.
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: And the Corinthians were fascinated with spiritual experiences.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: Paul doesn't tell them to stop pursuing the Spirit, he tells them to pursue the Spirit with love and concern for others.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: Verse 12 Since you are so eager to have the special abilities the Spirit gives, seek those that will strengthen the whole church.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: So that when you're out and about, you can be bold to declare and to prophesy at your work.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: You can be bold and have the gift of faith and say, God, I want I come to you in doubt, but Lord, knowing that you're the one I can trust in.
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: Like that's faith.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: If I need healing, I'm gonna go to Jim DeWarren, who's gonna pray because he has the gift of healing.
- 17:44SPEAKER_03: He has the gift of faith.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna go to that man.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna say, Jim, I don't know what's going on, but I know you have the gift.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: Let's pray.
- 17:52SPEAKER_03: It was the four friends who lowered the man in the roof.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: Their faith made him well.
- 17:58SPEAKER_03: You know why?
- 17:59SPEAKER_03: Because he knew how to pick friends.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: Let's be real.
- 18:03SPEAKER_03: Just for a moment.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: You don't have a you problem, you have a friend problem.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: You got the wrong ones.
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: You've given them too much authority.
- 18:14SPEAKER_03: You've allowed them to influence you in the wrong way.
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: Show me your friends, I'll show you where you're going.
- 18:20SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: Again, hear what Paul is saying.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: This is incredibly practical.
- 18:27SPEAKER_03: Spiritual maturity is not measured by how much I experience God, it's also measured by how much my relationship with God benefits the people around me.
- 18:41SPEAKER_03: Not about how much you've read or how much you've prayed, but how much you look like Jesus.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: You know, people, for the most part, they're gonna forget what you say.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: But they'll never forget how you made them feel.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: And this is what Paul is addressing.
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: Maybe instead of praying, God bless me, we start saying, Holy Spirit, who can I strengthen today?
- 19:09SPEAKER_03: No, what if we came into church and said, Holy Spirit, who needs encouragement today?
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: What if we instead we go, I don't know who's speaking, but they can do it.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Holy Spirit, who needs comfort?
- 19:20SPEAKER_03: Holy Spirit, who needs to hear about Jesus?
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: You know, when when I was in so listen, I'm not throwing out all my bad experiences.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: Because I'll tell you something else that happened in our culture.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: There this happened a lot, and I'm not saying this to shame us, but I do think it it covers a mindset of where we're at.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: Have you ever heard the term Pentecostal handshake?
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: Anyone ever heard that?
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: Uh Pentecostal handshake was when somebody would come up to you and and shake your hand and there was money in it.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: They called a Pentecostal handshake.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: I'll never forget somebody walked up to me one time and shook my hand, and as I'm shaking a hand, I didn't know it was coming, it dropped.
- 20:05SPEAKER_03: And it was like, we made eye contact, and I was like, What do we do now?
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: This is awkward.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: And I was like, right?
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: But you know what was happening in that culture is people were walking in going, God, who needs this today?
- 20:26SPEAKER_03: Who's been praying that they don't know how they're gonna make it?
- 20:31SPEAKER_03: And the culture that was happening in the specific church I was at at the time was people were coming in going, God, whose meet need do I need to meet?
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: I could be generous in what you've given me, and I want to give it away.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: In fact, I knew one person that every single Sunday he brought a hundred, ten hundred dollar bills and he handed it out.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: I hung out with him a lot.
- 20:52SPEAKER_03: No, I'm just kidding.
- 20:54SPEAKER_03: I'm just kidding.
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: I just knew, and guess what?
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: I stumbled upon it.
- 20:58SPEAKER_03: He didn't he didn't proclaim it, he didn't come up to me like FYI, like I give out four grand a month.
- 21:04SPEAKER_03: He came up going, every single week I pray and I ask God, who needs this today?
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, amen.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 21:13SPEAKER_03: Amen.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: Amen.
- 21:16SPEAKER_03: It's the first time.
- 21:17SPEAKER_03: No, I'm just kidding.
- 21:19SPEAKER_03: Amen.
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: Amen.
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: What is that?
- 21:22SPEAKER_03: It's a mindset that if we take that and say, God, who needs an encouragement today?
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: God, where are you directing me?
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: And that could happen in a coffee, it could happen in your small group, it could happen at a gas station.
- 21:33SPEAKER_03: Who needs something?
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: This is what Paul is addressing.
- 21:36SPEAKER_03: He says, This, and this is a beautiful picture of following Jesus.
- 21:41SPEAKER_03: He says in verse 15, Well then what what shall I do?
- 21:44SPEAKER_03: I will pray in the spirit, and I'll also pray in words I understand.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: I will sing in the spirit, and I also sing in words I understand.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: He's saying, Listen, don't become so intellectual that there's no room for the supernatural.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: And then he's saying, Don't become so experience driven that That you stop thinking biblically.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: What he's saying is we need both.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: Know the word.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: Listen to what the Spirit is saying, pray deeply, think clearly, and walk obediently.
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: Because listen, learn when to speak and when to be quiet.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: This may be one of the most overlooked lessons in chapter 14.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: Paul repeatedly tells people that there are moments when they should remain silent.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: And I know a lot of people, they've read verse 34 and 35, and they've let those two verses stand alone.
- 22:38SPEAKER_03: But what Paul is addressing is not gender, it's disorder.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: And he says this in verse 28.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: He says, if one is present who can interpret tongues, they must be silent in your church meeting.
- 22:51SPEAKER_03: He's saying, Listen, you know each other so well that the person over here has the gift of tongues and this person has the gift of interpretation.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: If that person is not there, stay quiet.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: And then he says, if if one of you is prophesying and another person receives a revelation from the Lord, the one who is speaking must what?
- 23:09SPEAKER_03: Be silent.
- 23:11SPEAKER_03: Stop.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: And then he says, women should be silent during the church meeting.
- 23:16SPEAKER_03: This wasn't a generalization.
- 23:18SPEAKER_03: He wasn't saying all women.
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: This would contradict all the times that Paul said that they were praying and prophesying, leading the church when nobody else did.
- 23:27SPEAKER_03: Like this doesn't make sense.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: But to these married women, because you can see in verse 35 where he says, Go home and ask these questions to your husband.
- 23:35SPEAKER_03: He's not saying generally all women need to be quiet.
- 23:39SPEAKER_03: It's ridiculous.
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: And if you are raised with that mindset or that understanding, my first question to you isn't, is this what the Bible says?
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: My first question is, what happened to you?
- 23:52SPEAKER_03: What happened to you that you are so insecure that you think you should quiet a whole gender?
- 23:59SPEAKER_03: What happened to you that thinks that they can't be people that have a calling, a gifting, a leadership role, a prophetic word, praying.
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: It's the reason I'm going back to this because I know 1 Timothy 2.
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I know the argument that people make, denominations make, and I'm just telling them, I'll say it up front.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: This is not that kind of church.
- 24:26SPEAKER_03: And I know because I've sat across the table from people.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: I had one guy say, Listen, if you let another woman on that stage, you'll never see one of my tithes.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: And I said, I don't think I don't think you're my provider.
- 24:42SPEAKER_03: Well, I'm a lawyer and I make a lot of money.
- 24:44SPEAKER_03: I said, Well, whoop-dee-doo.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: Middle of our house, our house cafe, back before his cafe on the Abbey.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: That's what I said to him.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: I said, dude, I don't know if you tithe or not.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: But I will not listen to your demand that is unbiblical because you got an insecurity, small complex, is what you have.
- 25:06SPEAKER_03: Again, in this moment, silence is situational.
- 25:10SPEAKER_03: Paul isn't necessarily establishing three permanently silent groups.
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: He's regulating when people should speak and when they should remain quiet so that worship doesn't descend into disorder.
- 25:25SPEAKER_03: Because he's saying not every opinion needs to be expressed, not every disagreement needs your response.
- 25:32SPEAKER_03: Not everything you know needs to be said.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: Not every social media post deserves your comment.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: Not every offense needs confrontation.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: Sometimes the most spirit-led thing you can do is shut your mouth.
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: And so, yes, Paul said, in this particular case, Gentile women in a group setting where men were over here and women were over here, you're saying things that you shouldn't be saying, and I'm asking you to be quiet and to go home and ask your husband.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: And here's the best thing that I think Paul does in 1 Corinthians 14.
- 26:11SPEAKER_03: He remembers the unbeliever sitting in the room.
- 26:16SPEAKER_03: This is extremely important because there are camps out there that do church for the saved.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: Well, we just want people who think like us, believe like us, and nobody else is welcomed.
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: And they don't and they feel that when they walk in.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: This is not here.
- 26:33SPEAKER_03: This is not what Paul is saying in the Corinthian church.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: He says, Listen, we welcome the people that feel like they don't belong to let them know that they belong.
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: We don't want people to look like me or us.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: We want them to look like them because God said they're part of the body.
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: And in verse 23, he says, if unbelievers or people who don't understand these things come into your church meeting and hear everyone speak in an unknown language, they will think you are crazy.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: Paul cares about the outsider, but notice he doesn't say, stop the supernatural, just don't do it.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: He does it.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: Instead, he wants the supernatural activity to be understandable enough that the unbeliever encounters God.
- 27:24SPEAKER_03: Look at verse 24.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: But if all of you are prophesying and unbelievers or people who don't understand these things come into your meeting, they will be convicted of sin and judged by what you say.
- 27:37SPEAKER_03: They will fall to their knees and they will worship God, declaring God is truly among you.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: That's the incredible vision for every time we meet.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: Not seeker sensitive at the expense of the spirit, not spiritually chaotic at the expense of the seeker, spirit-filled and outsider aware.
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: The goal isn't for unbelievers to leave saying, Those people are weird.
- 28:05SPEAKER_03: Nor do we want them to leave, go, that was impressive.
- 28:10SPEAKER_03: I don't want them to leave with that either.
- 28:12SPEAKER_03: I want them to leave going, God is in that place.
- 28:18SPEAKER_03: God is there.
- 28:21SPEAKER_03: This is not a moment where we go, Wow, they got a gifted singer.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: They have a gifted this, they have a gifted that.
- 28:27SPEAKER_03: That's not the point.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: I want them to walk out going, God is here.
- 28:32SPEAKER_03: God is here.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: And he says, Listen, don't ignore, here, this is this is general for us.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: Don't ignore what you don't understand.
- 28:45SPEAKER_03: Don't ignore what you don't understand.
- 28:48SPEAKER_03: And don't confuse chaos with the Holy Spirit.
- 28:56SPEAKER_03: Like here's how here's how it was for me.
- 28:59SPEAKER_03: I would see some weird things, guys, and I could tell you stories, I could write books at my experiences.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: And here's what the explanation would be.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: Not only was it weird, like I had a youth group at one point who would not bring people to Sunday mornings.
- 29:17SPEAKER_03: They would not bring friends to Sunday mornings.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: They say, listen, I it's just it's chaotic.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: I don't know who's gonna be doing certain things.
- 29:27SPEAKER_03: It was open mic night and it was chaotic.
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: It was crazy.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: I know some of you are there and some of you were participating.
- 29:34SPEAKER_03: I know, I got it.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: We're a wide variety group.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: We're all not just Catholic, Lutheran, Methodists, Assembly of God, Baptists.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: Like we're we're a mixture.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: But listen, here's my conclusion.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: The Holy Spirit is not weird.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: People are weird and they blame the Holy Spirit.
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: Well, I didn't want to do that because here's what I know the fruit of the Spirit is self-control.
- 30:02SPEAKER_03: Order.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: What Paul is addressing is you think you can be chaotic and do whatever you want, and I'm telling you, you can't.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: It's leading to disorder, and I need you to stop it.
- 30:14SPEAKER_03: Because we don't want to confuse.
- 30:17SPEAKER_03: Look at verse 33.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: For God is not a God of disorder, but of peace.
- 30:22SPEAKER_03: The immediate context concerns gathered worship, but the principle reveals the character of God.
- 30:31SPEAKER_03: God isn't trying to produce chaos in your life.
- 30:36SPEAKER_03: And that doesn't mean that following Jesus is going to be comfortable or predictable, but it does mean we shouldn't constantly excuse irresponsibility or emotional impulsiveness or disorder by saying things like, Well, I just feel led to do it.
- 30:56SPEAKER_03: Like one of the most difficult conversations is when someone says that.
- 31:04SPEAKER_03: So that must mean that I'm right.
- 31:06SPEAKER_03: And you go, dude, wrong voice.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: That's not what he said.
- 31:12SPEAKER_03: Sometimes the most spiritual thing that we can do is show up on time, be faithful where we are, finish what we started, forgive, apologize.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: Show up, be a voice of reason, be ears to hear.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: Like sometimes that's the most spiritual thing, and listen, it benefits the body of Christ.
- 31:49SPEAKER_03: The body of Christ is strengthened because you showed up.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: If we take the mindset that nobody knows, I don't need to be there, nobody knows.
- 32:02SPEAKER_03: I can just sit back and relax.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: Paul goes to them.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: This is what he's addressing, you guys.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: This is dangerous for us.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: And here's why it's dangerous.
- 32:16SPEAKER_03: People my age and older, this is why it's dangerous because there's a generation that's watching you.
- 32:21SPEAKER_03: And what we do now shows them the future, shows them where we're going.
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: We don't look at them and go, hey, one day, one day, one day.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: It's today.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: But they're still watching.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: What are we gonna do?
- 32:37SPEAKER_03: Now hear me, hear me.
- 32:39SPEAKER_03: They're gonna amen me on this one.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: There's things you can learn from them.
- 32:44SPEAKER_03: We don't take the approach that we're the older, more mature people in the room.
- 32:50SPEAKER_03: Listen, for me, I may not get past the second row if I need someone to pray for me.
- 32:56SPEAKER_03: I'm going to some of them.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: And some of you need to come from the back area to the front and watch them pray for you as well.
- 33:09SPEAKER_03: It's not us versus them, it's us, we in this together.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: Amen.
- 33:17SPEAKER_02: Could you say it with me right now?
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: Listen, we've we have, if you don't mind, just in this moment, I want Will to just sing this again.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: Again, here's what I'm asking of you.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: Can you surrender whatever it is?
- 33:36SPEAKER_03: Whatever it is that maybe jarred your thinking today, maybe went against something.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: Here's what I'm asking you to do.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: Can you surrender it today?
- 33:46SPEAKER_03: Give it to the Lord and let Him.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: Let Him be the one that corrects, let Him be the one that leads, let Him be the one that talks to you about whatever it is.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: And listen, be honest with Him about it.
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: Can you surrender that today?
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: It's not surrendering to Life Community Church, to me.
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: This is surrendering to His plans, His will, what He wants for my life.
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: Can we do that?
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: Listen, before an email, before a conversation, God, what are you saying?
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: God, what are you saying to me about this?
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: We just sing this together.
- 34:23unknown: Go ahead, brother.
