- 0:00get laced up let's go it's time for banter with
- 0:04the boys welcome back to banter with the boys
- 0:16fast laps where we got the italian gp recap the
- 0:21azerbaijan gp Preview. Yes, I've done it. Put
- 0:26a little sauce on it. Next to me, we got Joe.
- 0:30I don't know. I'm so sorry. I'd like to formally
- 0:36apologize. Someone possibly cringed. Ridiculously
- 0:40cringed. That was an open. That was an opening.
- 0:45There goes all the energy I had, though. Let's
- 0:49turn it back to our normal voice. Mike. Inside
- 0:53Voices. Also here. Happy to be here again. Since
- 0:56we're on the cringe factor. With your Hulkenberg
- 0:57steak hat. Hulkenberg hat. For you Spotify listeners.
- 1:00In memoriam of Hulkenberg, who didn't die, but
- 1:02didn't even start the race. Solidarity. Since
- 1:07we're on our cringe streak right now, excited
- 1:09to talk about all sorts of things, including
- 1:11what happened with McQuillan. Yeah. It's a Sauber's
- 1:15natural state, you know? In the garage. In the
- 1:17garage. Or on the side of the road. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:23They finish. I'm not wearing anything. Don't
- 1:27wear Alpine finishes. They're just at the back.
- 1:28Okay, sorry. For our Spotify listeners, I am
- 1:30wearing things. I'm Wink. We're good. Don't worry.
- 1:32He's wearing green. I hope so. Anyway. All right.
- 1:36There's a lot going on. Kev's behind the cameras
- 1:39getting everything done for us. Of course. Yes.
- 1:42Let's just move on, Kev, to our Italian GP recap.
- 1:46Recap. Oh, my God. I can't. To start. Our pre
- 2:00-race banter. Yes, that's what we call it. You
- 2:04know, quality, practice, yada, yada. Joe, you
- 2:09usually, no offense, but you usually pull it
- 2:11up here because you just always have notes on
- 2:13it, so it just works out. Definitely not as much
- 2:15as the last race we had. We had a ton of notes
- 2:18pre -race. This time around... Mind you, this
- 2:21race happened a minute ago. It did. Two weeks
- 2:23ago now. So just as a reminder, Hamilton did
- 2:26have a five -grid place penalty coming into the
- 2:28weekend. Ferrari still looked pretty quick in
- 2:31practices, though. Piastri was a little off the
- 2:35pace all weekend leading up to the race. And
- 2:39I think part of it is that he did not get to
- 2:40practice an FV1 because he had to give up a seat
- 2:43to a rookie. So it kind of leads me to believe
- 2:46that maybe maybe piastre just kind of like he
- 2:48really like thrives Having those practice sessions
- 2:51and getting stuff down or maybe he just wasn't
- 2:52as comfortable this weekend in the car quality
- 2:57Fastest Q1 was Russell was the fastest in Q1
- 3:00with mediums. He had a little sound bite at the
- 3:03end of Q3 asking why they didn't put him on mediums
- 3:07again. And then Max Verstappen, right after Lando,
- 3:11sets the fastest lap in F1 history. Max Verstappen
- 3:14sets it. So that's the second race weekend in
- 3:17a row where Max or Lando gets the record and
- 3:20then Max or someone else breaks it. So pre -race,
- 3:24yep. Fun stuff. Wow. Energy is just gone. So
- 3:30fun. He burned it all in the beginning. No. Yeah.
- 3:35Max, starting at the front of the grid for us
- 3:37as we head into our Italian GP here, followed
- 3:42by, let's see, Norris, Piastri, LeClaire, Russell,
- 3:45Antonelli, which you have a note here that I'm
- 3:47curious about, Bortoletto, Alonso, Sonota, and
- 3:51Hamilton. Where would you like to start? You
- 3:55know what? Let's start with Aston because it'll
- 3:57be real quick. Yeah. Alonzo didn't finish the
- 4:01race. Stroll. Stroll. P18. Was this your doing,
- 4:08Joe? Sad trombone. Yeah, sad trombone. That's
- 4:13hilarious. Yeah, it's pretty sad. So we were
- 4:16talking about this earlier. We were watching
- 4:17the recap before we started this. The DNF from
- 4:23Alonzo was a suspension failure and they did
- 4:26some research as to what caused that suspension
- 4:28failure because it looked like he just took the
- 4:30corner and his car just went and was just done.
- 4:33Come to find out what happened was a rock had
- 4:35gotten kicked up and it hit the suspension in
- 4:38the perfect place and basically snapped the suspension.
- 4:41So apparently there was a large enough sized
- 4:43rock in the gravel trap that got into. into there
- 4:47and basically kicked up and hit the perfect point
- 4:50and hit the basically like they're like this
- 4:52shouldn't be happening and we don't expect to
- 4:54see this happen again but it's something that
- 4:56can just kind of happen i'm not impressed with
- 4:59that yeah so that's so that that is why he took
- 5:04the dnf i guess so okay more more from the alonzo
- 5:09unlucky season Literally. This has been super
- 5:13unlucky for Alonzo all season, yes. Let's see.
- 5:17I mean, I don't need to say anything on Aston.
- 5:20No, I mean, it was really rough seeing Alonzo
- 5:23go down and then Stroll being Stroll, you know.
- 5:27Actually, I don't think Stroll did anything wrong.
- 5:29I think he actually got screwed over a little
- 5:30bit with that collision with Esteban. I think
- 5:34it was Esteban. Yeah, you know, just. Pretty
- 5:37bad weekend for Aston. After a good one, I think,
- 5:40they had in Zandvoort. Yeah, they were super
- 5:43fast in Zandvoort. I will just touch on Alpine
- 5:48really quick. I mean, just not good. Not good.
- 5:54Gasly finishing P16, Colapinto P17. A couple
- 5:58weeks ago, Joe made our little document here.
- 6:02organize our notes he said who is this team again
- 6:05i just kind of left it in there i was like yeah
- 6:07yeah this is this is pretty much still holding
- 6:09true so um i would like them to get better at
- 6:12some point i'm i mean and like i've been super
- 6:16high on it all year that they will trend up as
- 6:20the season ends like they've done literally the
- 6:22past two seasons actually so but we're not quite
- 6:26seeing that yet so it's You know, I'm more or
- 6:29less looking forward to next season, you know,
- 6:31when they will be powered by that Mercedes power
- 6:34unit. I'm wondering how much of this is literally
- 6:37just the fault of Renault was like, yeah, we're
- 6:39cashing it in. And so there's just been no upgrades
- 6:42to the powertrain division. And like they're
- 6:46just they can't compete, especially on these
- 6:48high power circuits like Monza. I expect them
- 6:51to do really poorly at Baku as well because it's
- 6:53another high power circuit. Like the Renault
- 6:55engine is just bad. I expect him to be better
- 6:57next year. I hope so. I hope so. Like we were
- 7:01talking before we started the show, I've been
- 7:04seeing a ton of articles lately saying, like,
- 7:06is Gasly just wasting his career at Alpine, or
- 7:09is he, like, too good for Alpine or whatever?
- 7:11So, I don't know. As a Gasly fan, that's been
- 7:13fun to watch, but also sucks to think about that.
- 7:16Like, yeah, he's been there for a minute now.
- 7:19Nothing seems to have improved. So let's hope
- 7:22for 2026, right? Probably be saying that for
- 7:25every episode the rest of the season. So let's
- 7:29see. Haas. Yeah. What happened? I don't know.
- 7:38There was some incidents. I think both drivers
- 7:41got into incidents, didn't they? Yeah, because
- 7:42Ocon had an incident with Stroll. I think that
- 7:47was just very clearly Ocon's fault, I feel. I
- 7:50don't even remember the incident because I remember
- 7:51watching it and just rolled my eyes and just
- 7:53kept going. And then there was the incident between
- 7:56Oliver Behrman and... Just an acceptance. Yeah,
- 7:59just an Oconism. And then there was the incident
- 8:02with Behrman and Carlos Saenz. We'll go to blows
- 8:06on this. I think it's a racing incident. I think
- 8:08Oliver shouldn't have gotten beat. No, yeah,
- 8:10I think... I think that's fair. I think it probably
- 8:14is more of a racing incident. I think he was
- 8:16not fully, I mean, he wasn't enough alongside
- 8:19signs to still think it was his, I think signs
- 8:22still probably could have given, gave him room.
- 8:25Um, if anyone was to get a penalty, I do think
- 8:28it would have been, should have been, should
- 8:29be bearable, but I'd be happy with it also just
- 8:31being a racing incident. I would. prefer it to
- 8:34be racing isn't it this is like the so like this
- 8:36is where we get into the same thing we were talking
- 8:38about with signs and lawson where like it's all
- 8:40about racing integrity do we want to see racing
- 8:42or do we want to watch them just do time trials
- 8:44right so like like oliver was making a move it
- 8:48was a bit of a bold move but it was a move and
- 8:50at that point like carlos should be defending
- 8:52but at that point like he's already got oliver
- 8:54beerman on the inside and carlos took no changing
- 8:57actions he just took the racing line and just
- 8:59expected that oliver would just give him the
- 9:01spot and like is that really racing? I mean,
- 9:05it is because they don't need to give space unless
- 9:10there are certain length, like aside them. So
- 9:13it's like, he's, he's fighting within the rules.
- 9:15Baron wasn't enough. Wasn't there enough, at
- 9:18least in my perspective, he could have been,
- 9:20and maybe the FAA had been wrong before. I mean,
- 9:22I'm going to touch on something that they were
- 9:23wrong on very soon, but, uh, yeah, I just, it,
- 9:28it is unfortunate. Um, I, I think, I mean, really,
- 9:32uh, Signs has just been given a bad hand race
- 9:36after race after race. As he's wearing the Williams
- 9:40hat. Yeah, it's truly wearing this because for
- 9:44signs, like solidarity for the man, because he
- 9:46has just been given up a bad hand over and over
- 9:49and over again. And I feel like he's been picking
- 9:52it up. He's been trying. And he's been improving,
- 9:56too. We're seeing him improve, and then he just
- 9:58keeps on getting into these incidents. And most
- 10:01of the time, I don't feel like they're his fault.
- 10:03A lot of them, they are racing incidents. If
- 10:06a lot of the time they are racing in incidents,
- 10:08then yeah, it probably is a learning experience
- 10:10that he should be taking back. Right. But yeah.
- 10:13Honestly, when I watched the incident happen,
- 10:15the only solidarity I took in the fact that they
- 10:18gave Oliver that penalty was the fact that I'm
- 10:20like, this is exactly what happened with Carlos.
- 10:22My thought process was like, maybe they're just
- 10:25giving Oliver this penalty to have some sort
- 10:29of consistency because they gave it to Carlos
- 10:31last race. And, you know. Or not last race, two
- 10:35races ago. No, it was... It was Hungary that
- 10:38it happened. No, it was Zandvoort. Was it Zandvoort?
- 10:40Oh, it was Zandvoort. You're right, it was turn
- 10:42one of Zandvoort. Yeah, so, like, I'm like, maybe
- 10:45this is just, you know, they're doing it for
- 10:46consistency's sake. I don't like that, but at
- 10:49least they're consistent with their rules. And
- 10:52you're going to talk about that. It only is going
- 10:55to make me more upset that Oliver still has this
- 10:57penalty. I think Haas should get on the FIA for
- 10:59the exact same thing. Sure. I almost cursed.
- 11:02I'll watch my language. Very, very. No, you're
- 11:06fine. Very emotional. Worked up about that one.
- 11:07What do you think? Rightfully so. As a unbiased.
- 11:11Yeah. Very unbiased. Truly very curious what
- 11:14your opinion is on that move. For me. It seemed
- 11:20like, I mean, of course we're going to see it
- 11:22from a way different perspective than the two
- 11:24drivers, right? Of course. But it felt like to
- 11:27me, Carlos, I actually just didn't straight up.
- 11:31I don't know. For me, it definitely seemed more
- 11:34in Carlos than it did Bierman. I mean, yeah,
- 11:36Bierman, Carlos had the turn, you know. He had
- 11:40the right, there it is right here. It's literally
- 11:42happening again right here. He's watching it
- 11:44happen. I just. I don't know. I feel like Carlos
- 11:48needs to give more room there. I mean, it was
- 11:49a tight race going up to the turn, and you know
- 11:52that he's there. It's not like he took off past
- 11:55Bierman on the straight for me. He got up next
- 11:58to him, but it's not like it was a full overtake.
- 12:02I don't know. I feel like you got to give him
- 12:04a little room there. I don't think anybody should
- 12:06have got a... Can you bring that back for two
- 12:08seconds? Not to mention, I do believe they were
- 12:09racing side -by -side beforehand. Go just a little
- 12:12bit further back. Yeah, so they're side -by -side
- 12:13racing here. So they're side -by -side racing,
- 12:16and Carlos simply late -braked the corner and
- 12:18then tried to just take the racing line. Because
- 12:21Bjergman almost passed him. He almost passed
- 12:24him, actually. Right. On the straight. That's
- 12:27racing. So that's why I'm saying it should be
- 12:29a racing incident. Like... They were racing and
- 12:32Carlos took an aggressive line and was hoping
- 12:34that Esteban, sorry, that Oliver would just get
- 12:37on the brakes. Or he thought he was past him.
- 12:38I don't know. It could be an honest mistake that
- 12:40he thought he was past him. But I just, I don't
- 12:44know. For me, again, seeing it from where we
- 12:46can see it from, kind of looked like from his
- 12:49view. Yeah, you don't see his car at all, but
- 12:51I can't quite see his mirror there. Can he see
- 12:53him in his mirror or not? You know, from the
- 12:55TV pod angle. You know what I mean? I'm not sure,
- 12:59but you can't see any piece of his car from the
- 13:01TV pod at least. Yeah. So I don't know if he
- 13:04just straight up figured he got past him. But
- 13:07for me, Beerman carried a lot of speed coming
- 13:10out of that corner and down the straight. Seeing
- 13:12it again here, I don't know where Beerman is
- 13:14trying to go here because he's not making that
- 13:17turn like that. He's going to keep on pretty
- 13:19much going straight -ish. Which means he's hoping
- 13:22to push signs probably off track on the next
- 13:26turn then. And then he gets the overtake because
- 13:30of that. So signs are just like, no.
