Vox Liturgica: The Propers of the Day. According to the Roman Missal before 1955. The Feast of Saint Peter of Alcantara, October 19 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of this saint Monsignor William R Kelly writes Peter Caravito or Peter of Alcantara as he is called from the city of his birth died on 10/18/1562 and his feast was introduced into the Missal by Clement the tenth. This saint is distinguished by three characteristics.
• 0:52
The first is the incredible severity of the mortification by which like Saint Paul he sought to fill up that which was wanting in the passion of Christ for the good of the church. The spirit of the Franciscan reform initiated in the new so called province of Saint Joseph by his endeavors is one of great penance and extreme poverty. The second characteristic of Saint Peter of Alcantara is the abundance of mystical gifts in the grace of sublime contemplation received by him in reward for his austerities. Thirdly, Saint Peter is distinguished by the active part he took in the reform of the Carmelite order initiated by Saint Teresa. He was the first to examine and approve of the spirit of this reform.
• 1:56
Saint Teresa for her part declared that she never asked anything of the Lord through the merits of brother Peter which she had not obtained. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit. The just man shall flourish like the palm tree.
• 2:27
He shall grow to greatness like the cedars of Libanus, planted in the house of the Lord in the courts of the house of our God. It is good to give praise to the Lord to sing to thy name, O Most High. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, through all ages of ages. Amen. The just man shall flourish like the palm tree.
• 3:05
He shall grow to greatness like the cedars of Libanus planted in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. The Collect, let us pray. O God, who didst vouch safe to make blessed Peter thy confessor, glorious by the gift of a wonderful spirit of penance and most lofty contemplation grant us we beseech thee that through his interceding merits being mortified in the flesh we may the more easily understand the things of heaven through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the letter of St.
• 4:11
Paul the Apostle to the Philippians. Brethren, what once stood to my credit I now write down as loss for the love of Christ. For that matter there is nothing I do not write down as loss compared with the high privilege of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord. For love of him I have lost everything. Treat everything else as refuse if I may have Christ to my credit.
• 4:50
In him I would render my account not claiming any justification that is my own work given me by the law but the justification that comes from believing in Christ Jesus, God's gift on condition of our faith. Him I would learn to know and the virtue of his resurrection and what it means to share his sufferings molded into the pattern of his death in the hope of achieving resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already won the prize already reached fulfillment. I press on in hope of winning the mastery as Christ Jesus has won the mastery over me. The gradual.
• 5:49
The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom and his tongue shall speak judgment. The law of God is in his heart, and his steps shall not be supplanted. Alleluia. Alleluia. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord in his commandments he hath great delight.
• 6:16
Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that time Jesus said to his disciples, Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your father to give you a kingdom. Sell what you possess, and give alms. Make to yourselves bags which grow not old, a treasure in heaven which faileth not, where no thief approaches, no moth corrupteth: for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
• 7:04
The offertory, In thy strength, O Lord, the just shall joy, and in Thy salvation he shall rejoice exceedingly. Thou hast given him his heart's desire. The secret. We offer Thee, O Lord, the gifts of our devotion, and may they be pleasing to Thee in honor of Thy Saints, and by Thy mercy become salutary to us through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
• 7:57
The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting right in for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the power stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.
• 8:57
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Amen I say to you that you who have left all things and followed me shall receive a hundredfold and shall possess life everlasting. The post communion.
• 9:28
Let us pray. We beseech the Almighty God that we who have received heavenly food may by the intercession of blessed Peter thy confessor be strengthened by it against all adversity through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen.
