Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Suffocate we're doing.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Hello. I am Le Jennings of the funeral portraits.
- 0:21Speaker 3: That you are in daily.
- 0:22Speaker 4: How we do thanks for journey is I'm doing great.
- 0:26Speaker 4: I'm just as as we talked to her a little
- 0:29Speaker 4: bit pre before this. I'm sitting inside of my grand,
- 0:33Speaker 4: very very tiny hotel room in New Orleans. That's why
- 0:37Speaker 4: I'm kind of leaned up against the bed because there's
- 0:39Speaker 4: no other place to sit. We have a nice off
- 0:41Speaker 4: day to day, but for you know, normally we don't
- 0:44Speaker 4: get we don't get hotels.
- 0:46Speaker 2: But I think we've earned it.
- 0:47Speaker 4: We've been on tour basically since January eighteenth, NonStop, and
- 0:52Speaker 4: so it's it's been it's nice to just relax for
- 0:55Speaker 4: the day.
- 0:56Speaker 3: It is in data, my friend.
- 0:57Speaker 5: Well, the relaxing is about to enfoys if you in
- 1:00Speaker 5: a portrait are releasing the lax edition of last year's
- 1:04Speaker 5: album Greetings from Suffocate City this Friday during the third
- 1:07Speaker 5: eighth So did you get the same feelings of excitement
- 1:10Speaker 5: releasing the deluxe version is what you did the first
- 1:12Speaker 5: time round?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Not? Probably not as much, right, And there's there's a
- 1:17Speaker 2: few things there.
- 1:18Speaker 4: It doesn't even matter. It could be a whole new record.
- 1:21Speaker 4: I don't even know if something will top this last one,
- 1:24Speaker 4: just because it took us like five years release that
- 1:28Speaker 4: last one, right, Like, we'd been working on it since
- 1:31Speaker 4: twenty nineteen, you know, and it took us that long
- 1:35Speaker 4: to release it and to kind of get it perfect
- 1:38Speaker 4: and get what we wanted but also what the label needed.
- 1:41Speaker 4: And you know, of course a lot of it was
- 1:43Speaker 4: fighting with COVID and you know, all of that kind
- 1:45Speaker 4: of situation, so there was only so much that we
- 1:48Speaker 4: could really do, you know, and a lot of that
- 1:51Speaker 4: time was sitting waiting, but a lot of it was
- 1:52Speaker 4: kind of growing and building.
- 1:54Speaker 2: And you know, it's kind.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Of cool to now be able to release the deluxe,
- 1:58Speaker 4: which I am excited for because there is some of
- 2:02Speaker 4: my favorite new Funeral Portrait songs are included in this,
- 2:05Speaker 4: and even some of my favorite B sides and and
- 2:08Speaker 4: some of my favorite like you know, just of fun
- 2:10Speaker 4: goodies you know that we've added along the way are
- 2:13Speaker 4: now going to be available for everyone.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Nice, And that initial album came out last September bright, So,
- 2:20Speaker 5: like you said, you worked on for five years, you
- 2:22Speaker 5: put a lot of yourselves into it.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Did it get a reception that you're hype.
- 2:25Speaker 2: And fun completely.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Yes, I think at first, you know, we had been
- 2:30Speaker 4: building fans along the way, so it was definitely a
- 2:33Speaker 4: cool stretch at the beginning. But I think the better
- 2:37Speaker 4: part is what we're building now right is like we're
- 2:40Speaker 4: still supporting, We're still supporting some huge tours, and it's
- 2:45Speaker 4: growing every single day. You know, every single day we're
- 2:49Speaker 4: selling copies at the merch table, or we're you know
- 2:52Speaker 4: whatever it may be, you know, online or whatever. You
- 2:55Speaker 4: can go to your local record store a lot of
- 2:57Speaker 4: the times and get it. And for us, it's about growth.
- 3:00Speaker 4: It's not about that direct right when it's out, everybody's
- 3:04Speaker 4: freaking out about it. It's about to me, it's about
- 3:06Speaker 4: the build. And I feel like what we're building towards
- 3:10Speaker 4: is this next record that I hope that will be
- 3:14Speaker 4: more that moment of like, oh, the new Funeral record
- 3:17Speaker 4: is coming out. I'm very excited for that, instead of
- 3:20Speaker 4: right now it's like, oh, we're in discovery mode still,
- 3:23Speaker 4: I think is the easiest way to say.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Tell us, it's not going to be out of five
- 3:26Speaker 3: years for the next one, is it? Uh?
- 3:30Speaker 2: I here's the deal, here's the deal. I do there's
- 3:34Speaker 2: still some touring.
- 3:35Speaker 4: I want to do off this record because again, we
- 3:37Speaker 4: spent a lot of time on this, you know, and
- 3:38Speaker 4: we're building still, you know, and I want to make
- 3:41Speaker 4: sure that what we get out of this is what
- 3:46Speaker 4: the best it can be, right, So we have started
- 3:49Speaker 4: writing for the next record. We we have two demos.
- 3:53Speaker 4: We want probably thirty demos total. Maybe I think what
- 3:58Speaker 4: we're going to aim for about thirty just like demos
- 4:01Speaker 4: or forty demos and then be like, Okay, these are
- 4:03Speaker 4: our favorite x amount of songs. You know, this this,
- 4:07Speaker 4: this is more the vibe, this is what we want
- 4:09Speaker 4: to do, or you know, just kind of we want
- 4:11Speaker 4: it to be a little bit more cohesive around this
- 4:14Speaker 4: time too. Where that even comes in the fact of
- 4:17Speaker 4: where it's recorded and how long it took, because this
- 4:20Speaker 4: last record, you know, took us five years and seven
- 4:23Speaker 4: different studios and three different actual times recording, and you know,
- 4:27Speaker 4: there was just like times that it was like it's
- 4:30Speaker 4: just what we want is to finally go and sit
- 4:33Speaker 4: down and do a record, and that's what we're very
- 4:35Speaker 4: excited to do next. So my guess is, give it,
- 4:38Speaker 4: give it another year and a half, you know, give
- 4:41Speaker 4: us another year and a half. Or another year.
- 4:43Speaker 3: You know, that's got the third off the time might
- 4:45Speaker 3: so that that'll do me.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Yes, the lex is being released on vinyl, CD and digitally,
- 4:52Speaker 5: with the digital album's getting a couple of extra songs,
- 4:55Speaker 5: but physical copies are having an exclusive song.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Friends are like these, very five marketing then, very clever.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Yes, you know, I think for us, we wanted to
- 5:03Speaker 4: do something unique and different, right, and we picked a
- 5:06Speaker 4: song called friends like These because like the true friends
- 5:10Speaker 4: of our band, they buy the physical copy, you know,
- 5:12Speaker 4: and so we wanted to kind of give them something,
- 5:14Speaker 4: a little bonus, you know. So you get that extra track,
- 5:17Speaker 4: and it's fun. It's a fun song. It's an old song.
- 5:20Speaker 4: We wrote it back in Oh my God, twenty nineteen,
- 5:23Speaker 4: early twenty nineteen.
- 5:24Speaker 2: We wrote that song so and it just never saw
- 5:26Speaker 2: the light of day.
- 5:28Speaker 4: And then we went and re recorded it in January
- 5:31Speaker 4: of this year, so that way we could kind of,
- 5:35Speaker 4: you know, give it the new flavor of what this
- 5:37Speaker 4: band is.
- 5:38Speaker 2: So it's cool. It's cool that it's finally seeing the
- 5:41Speaker 2: light of day. Yeah.
- 5:42Speaker 5: No, Now I want to run three the extra songs
- 5:45Speaker 5: across the three formats with you, so I can tell
- 5:47Speaker 5: us a bit more about them, So we'll start with
- 5:48Speaker 5: the brand new songs.
- 5:50Speaker 3: So you've got Skinny Lies.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Yes, I love that one.
- 5:54Speaker 4: It's crazy because we wrote that one in December of
- 5:57Speaker 4: last year. We had just finished are massive touring if
- 6:01Speaker 4: we did the Five Finger manson tour straight into a
- 6:05Speaker 4: tour with The Who, slashed straight into a headlining tour,
- 6:09Speaker 4: and that was just like we were NonStop at the
- 6:12Speaker 4: end of last year. But we were like, we gotta
- 6:14Speaker 4: go write new music. Let's go right, let's go see
- 6:16Speaker 4: what we can do. So went out to La we
- 6:18Speaker 4: wrote some songs, and we wrote the two songs which
- 6:21Speaker 4: is Skinny Lies and Evergreen, and it was like we
- 6:25Speaker 4: were like, no, no, no, let's put them out. Let's put
- 6:26Speaker 4: them out on the deluxe, Like let's not hold those
- 6:28Speaker 4: for the next record, like we want kids to hear
- 6:31Speaker 4: them now, like people need to hear them now, right.
- 6:33Speaker 4: So like Skinny Lies, I mean that song's about literally
- 6:37Speaker 4: what it talks about. It's about these little lies that
- 6:39Speaker 4: you tell yourself and they just kind of build up
- 6:42Speaker 4: and build up and build up, and then eventually you
- 6:44Speaker 4: kind of have this breakdown of like oh my god,
- 6:46Speaker 4: like too.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Much lying to yourself. What harm that can do. Yeah.
- 6:51Speaker 5: Nice, No, I said, you mentioned everygrade, so that's not
- 6:53Speaker 5: a new one and tell us about that.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 4: So Evergreen is kind of this like coming to term
- 7:00Speaker 4: with everything that's kind of going on right and and
- 7:03Speaker 4: and kind of being like, Okay, you know, this is
- 7:05Speaker 4: where I'm at, this is where we're at with everything
- 7:08Speaker 4: and whatever it is in your life, you know.
- 7:09Speaker 2: And it's it's a pretty personal song.
- 7:11Speaker 4: About you know, Caleb and myself struggle very heavily with
- 7:18Speaker 4: the same kind of stuff, you know, when when it
- 7:20Speaker 4: comes to mental health, and I think us we are
- 7:23Speaker 4: very similar in a lot of our things. So it's
- 7:25Speaker 4: really nice that we that I have a writing partner
- 7:28Speaker 4: that understands me so well, you know.
- 7:30Speaker 2: And I think Evergreen.
- 7:33Speaker 4: It's like, I guess the main track, the key track,
- 7:36Speaker 4: or the focus track, I guess is the easiest word
- 7:38Speaker 4: to say. When the Deluxe comes down, and I'm very
- 7:40Speaker 4: excited for kids to hear it again. That's the other
- 7:42Speaker 4: one that we did. And it's a little bit more
- 7:46Speaker 4: almost like pop punk at times. You know, it's it's fun,
- 7:48Speaker 4: it's a little different, it's not as heavy, it's you know,
- 7:51Speaker 4: but it's supposed to be it's it's this like it's
- 7:54Speaker 4: it's kind of a happy go lucky, you know, like
- 7:58Speaker 4: I'm complacent in where I am right now.
- 8:01Speaker 5: I was actually thought it might have been written a
- 8:03Speaker 5: number of your hairstyle, right yeah.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Because yes, exactly.
- 8:11Speaker 3: I didn't. The other new one is our Lost Boy.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Yeah, so last Boy. That's a fun one. So we
- 8:16Speaker 2: wrote that. That's an older song.
- 8:19Speaker 4: It's like a true B side for real, Like that's
- 8:22Speaker 4: a that's a song that we had done for the record,
- 8:26Speaker 4: and it was originally on it and I turned it
- 8:29Speaker 4: and I don't know, we we were just not happy.
- 8:33Speaker 4: It just wasn't what we wanted. We felt like we
- 8:36Speaker 4: could do better. We felt like there was better, you know.
- 8:38Speaker 4: And it's not that it's not a good song, it
- 8:40Speaker 4: just wasn't what we really wanted. But it's really cool
- 8:44Speaker 4: song because we did spend a lot of time on it.
- 8:46Speaker 4: There's like live like real, there's like a real orchestra
- 8:50Speaker 4: on it. We had stream players come in, like we
- 8:52Speaker 4: did the whole thing because we really believed in the song,
- 8:55Speaker 4: especially the riff. The riff is like really fun cody
- 8:58Speaker 4: or guitarist he like he's like a riff god and
- 9:00Speaker 4: he like really riffed it out and it was a
- 9:03Speaker 4: fun song to record. We did play it live, and
- 9:06Speaker 4: I think this was a determining factor. We played it
- 9:08Speaker 4: live like twice and people just didn't really care compared
- 9:14Speaker 4: to other songs that we were playing.
- 9:15Speaker 2: So we were like, you know, maybe back to the
- 9:18Speaker 2: drawing board.
- 9:19Speaker 4: But now it's getting to see the light of the day,
- 9:20Speaker 4: and who knows what if that's like the song that
- 9:22Speaker 4: really pops. And now we're now now it's gonna be
- 9:25Speaker 4: the song. And now that I say that it's going
- 9:26Speaker 4: to be the song, I.
- 9:29Speaker 5: Spoke about friends sides and the other ones.
- 9:32Speaker 3: I've got a little bit confused with him.
- 9:33Speaker 5: So you've got Hearst for Two, Dark Thoughts of Voodoo
- 9:35Speaker 5: Doll or with guest artists, like but that on the
- 9:38Speaker 5: original album as just you guys, and now they're on
- 9:41Speaker 5: the deluxe with the guest artists.
- 9:43Speaker 4: So it's so Hearst for Two is on the it's
- 9:47Speaker 4: on the original without a guest, and now this version.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Has a guest.
- 9:53Speaker 4: But Voodoo Doll and Dark Thoughts had guests on the
- 9:58Speaker 4: record and now they don't.
- 9:59Speaker 2: And the reason why is because we wanted to.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Give people those songs what the originally kind of sounded like,
- 10:06Speaker 4: you know, because we originally released both of those songs
- 10:09Speaker 4: as singles before the record was even announced, without guests,
- 10:13Speaker 4: you know, and on the digital we added both versions.
- 10:16Speaker 4: You know, we have the deluxe version that has both
- 10:19Speaker 4: you know, and and stuff like that.
- 10:21Speaker 2: But you know, I think for.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Us, we we wanted like to give people the option
- 10:28Speaker 4: right of listening to whatever side they wanted, whatever version
- 10:31Speaker 4: they did, you know.
- 10:32Speaker 2: And I don't know, it's been fun. It's it's cool
- 10:35Speaker 2: to kind of do that stuff, you know.
- 10:37Speaker 4: I I you know, maybe down the line will release
- 10:40Speaker 4: a stuff case City without the Spencer version and Ugly
- 10:44Speaker 4: without Burt from the used you know. And we've heard
- 10:47Speaker 4: holy Water without Ivan, you know, because I was on
- 10:49Speaker 4: the that was on the o G version, and then
- 10:52Speaker 4: even the version that we released in twenty nineteen.
- 10:54Speaker 2: That got us signed, you know, is Holywater.
- 10:57Speaker 4: So we wanted to kind of give people the songs
- 11:01Speaker 4: whichever way they want to listen to them.
- 11:03Speaker 5: I think it's a great idea because a lot of
- 11:05Speaker 5: people don't really understand what goes into having a song
- 11:08Speaker 5: with a guest artists on there.
- 11:09Speaker 3: So if they can hear the original and your original
- 11:11Speaker 3: vision for it, and then here how it ended up
- 11:13Speaker 3: and what sort of give him a better unerstanding in
- 11:15Speaker 3: the band?
- 11:16Speaker 2: Yes, completely, completely, yeah nice.
- 11:19Speaker 5: And then you've also got a demo version of Alien
- 11:21Speaker 5: and a live version of Suffocate City.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Yes, so Alien is probably it's started the weirdest. I
- 11:31Speaker 4: love this alternative version, as we will even call it.
- 11:34Speaker 4: It's this demo version, and it is so different. I
- 11:38Speaker 4: am so excited for kids here because it's coming out
- 11:40Speaker 4: very soon. It's this Friday, you know, and I'm so excited.
- 11:44Speaker 4: I'm so excited for people to be like, what even
- 11:47Speaker 4: is this song? Because I remember showing it to like
- 11:49Speaker 4: are our merch girl for the first time because she
- 11:52Speaker 4: had heard og Alien, like the real version like a
- 11:56Speaker 4: million times, right, And then one day we're in the car,
- 11:59Speaker 4: like in my like pro like my my, my everyday car.
- 12:02Speaker 4: We were like going to Walmart or something, and I
- 12:04Speaker 4: just played it real fast and she was like.
- 12:05Speaker 2: What is this?
- 12:06Speaker 4: Like this is so wild, it's so different. It's so
- 12:09Speaker 4: different until you get to the until you get to
- 12:11Speaker 4: the chorus and you're like, oh wait, that's Alien, you know.
- 12:14Speaker 4: So I'm very excited for that. And then the live
- 12:16Speaker 4: version of stuff K City was filmed or it was
- 12:19Speaker 4: recorded and filmed. Last year we did a big hometown show,
- 12:24Speaker 4: and you know what better way to do it. We
- 12:27Speaker 4: filmed a live DVD and of live record and this
- 12:31Speaker 4: is kind of just a song off of that and
- 12:32Speaker 4: just to just to kind of give people something a
- 12:36Speaker 4: little different. You know, I love live records. One of
- 12:40Speaker 4: some of my favorite stuff to do is drive around
- 12:43Speaker 4: and just kind of listen to a live record because
- 12:45Speaker 4: you feel like you're at a show. You know, you
- 12:47Speaker 4: feel like you're right back and where you were watching it.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Yeah, and damn s right now.
- 12:52Speaker 5: On the subject of guess artist might like you did
- 12:54Speaker 5: have a few on the original version of Greetings from
- 12:56Speaker 5: suffolk Ate City. So is that something that you're going
- 12:59Speaker 5: to continue to four on further albums or is that
- 13:01Speaker 5: just something you want to try out on this one
- 13:02Speaker 5: and see how it went.
- 13:04Speaker 4: I think it depends, right are the way modern rock
- 13:09Speaker 4: music is it? They really do like the guest features,
- 13:12Speaker 4: you know, I think they they like that, you know,
- 13:14Speaker 4: I think it's it's it's finally like, oh okay, I
- 13:18Speaker 4: understand why. You know, there's a lot of stuff in there.
- 13:20Speaker 4: It just depends on the song you know, like I
- 13:22Speaker 4: would love to. There's a lot of other artists or
- 13:25Speaker 4: types of artists that I want to work with too,
- 13:27Speaker 4: Like I don't want to just stick to like rock, right,
- 13:29Speaker 4: like I want to. I really want to work with
- 13:31Speaker 4: like Danny Elfman, you know, I want to do some composers.
- 13:34Speaker 4: I want to do even maybe different producers or stuff
- 13:37Speaker 4: like that, just something a little different, you know. Then
- 13:39Speaker 4: then just stick to just a rock artist, you know
- 13:41Speaker 4: what I mean. I think I think.
- 13:43Speaker 2: That's it too.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Is maybe what if we have like a guitarist even
- 13:46Speaker 4: what it doesn't even have to be a vocalist, you know,
- 13:49Speaker 4: So I think something could be cool in that sense too.
- 13:52Speaker 3: So how does it work with something like that?
- 13:54Speaker 5: Like you've got your version of the song obviously, Like
- 13:56Speaker 5: do you send it to them and give them liberty
- 13:58Speaker 5: to change it or ad bits or take bitch sound?
- 14:00Speaker 3: Do they have to go?
- 14:03Speaker 2: It's up to them.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Most of them want to keep this song the same,
- 14:07Speaker 4: just because it's like I get as a songwriter or something.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Most of the time you're just kind of like, this
- 14:12Speaker 4: is what the song is, and I'm just gonna make
- 14:13Speaker 4: it sound more me, you know.
- 14:15Speaker 2: So they might change a few words or stuff like that.
- 14:17Speaker 4: But all of them that we've done, it's the songs
- 14:20Speaker 4: have been completely done and we send it over. I
- 14:24Speaker 4: send them over the files and then a few days
- 14:26Speaker 4: later they send me over the tracks and it's just killer.
- 14:29Speaker 4: It's just you know, they really it feels like they're
- 14:31Speaker 4: believing like they did write it, you know. And I
- 14:34Speaker 4: think it's because we write them some kind of relatable
- 14:37Speaker 4: songs and I think we picked the right ones for
- 14:39Speaker 4: the people's voices.
- 14:41Speaker 3: One last question before.
- 14:42Speaker 5: We go, like, and I know you've been churing for
- 14:44Speaker 5: a long time, so I feel bad about asking you this,
- 14:46Speaker 5: but as Astralia, you've been checked on anyway.
- 14:49Speaker 4: We we wanted to come this year, but we got
- 14:52Speaker 4: so we were trying really hard to come in like August.
- 14:56Speaker 4: There was a few talks of some tours that come
- 14:58Speaker 4: in August, but then we got this other tour here
- 15:00Speaker 4: in the States with again with I Sign kills, like
- 15:03Speaker 4: we're out with them right now, and then they were
- 15:05Speaker 4: like no, no, no, we want you guys to come out
- 15:06Speaker 4: on our summer tour.
- 15:07Speaker 2: And we're like, okay, so we.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Are working on it for next year. Next year we're
- 15:12Speaker 4: gonna do Australia. We're gonna do another European tour. We're
- 15:16Speaker 4: gonna focus a little bit more on the rest of
- 15:19Speaker 4: the world and not so much the US because this
- 15:21Speaker 4: year we've been two hundred and ninety days in the US.
