- 1:59Speaker 6: Uh at this taping Friday evening, Happy weekend, everybody, And
- 2:04Speaker 6: I gotta be quick because we got the one and
- 2:06Speaker 6: only Paul Alan joining us. You've been seeing me on
- 2:10Speaker 6: the socials all over the place with this when the
- 2:12Speaker 6: voice of the Vikings, the voice of Canterbury Park, I mean,
- 2:16Speaker 6: he's Paul Allen. And we're gonna get to that interview
- 2:21Speaker 6: because Paul was gracious with his time, an hour and
- 2:24Speaker 6: ten minutes, and we go deep into everything. You know,
- 2:29Speaker 6: how he wound up here, his horse racing careers. I
- 2:32Speaker 6: think he's the best horse race caller in the country.
- 2:36Speaker 6: And obviously you know all this time as the voice
- 2:39Speaker 6: of the Purple the Minnesota Vikings, man of deep faith.
- 2:43Speaker 2: You will hear that as well.
- 2:45Speaker 6: He makes no bones about that and his affinity for
- 2:50Speaker 6: the Lord and how that has helped him in his life.
- 2:53Speaker 2: So this is just really a good interview with the.
- 2:55Speaker 6: Voice of the Minnesota Vikings, mister Paul Allen. Before we
- 3:01Speaker 6: get to that, I got to give a shout out
- 3:02Speaker 6: to our sponsors, Seventh Avenue Pizza. You know, folks, and
- 3:06Speaker 6: you see me and I go get you some and
- 3:08Speaker 6: this and that, and I'm always talking about Seventh Avenue Pizza.
- 3:11Speaker 6: And but again it's it's quality of ingredients.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Man.
- 3:14Speaker 6: For me, I just I love the way the way
- 3:17Speaker 6: that that that sausage taste on there. I love that
- 3:21Speaker 6: they have the breakfast pizza. I love the sausage pepperoni.
- 3:24Speaker 6: That's so that's the one I've really been going to lately.
- 3:28Speaker 6: Minnesota owned company, family owned and you know, big supporters
- 3:33Speaker 6: of the show. Matt Nelson, great guy, so let's support him.
- 3:38Speaker 6: Good Minnesota company. And I you know, I say it
- 3:41Speaker 6: all the time because I know there's a lot of
- 3:43Speaker 6: good frozen pizza coming out of Minnesota.
- 3:46Speaker 2: But for me, got to get you some of that
- 3:48Speaker 2: Seventh Avenue pizza. Baby.
- 3:49Speaker 6: So a couple other notes here that will just drop
- 3:54Speaker 6: off real quick. We're gonna be talking with Michelle o'bron
- 3:57Speaker 6: from the Minnesota Vixen, the women football team here in
- 4:01Speaker 6: Minnesota who just won their first championship, and we're working
- 4:05Speaker 6: with their media department, so we're gonna have coach bron
- 4:07Speaker 6: on on I think probably the next sports done right
- 4:11Speaker 6: and learn about professional women's football with a championship coach
- 4:16Speaker 6: here with coach bron So other than that, just it's
- 4:22Speaker 6: football season. Football's coming back, and I cannot wait. College
- 4:27Speaker 6: pro it's going down. Had the Hall of Fame game
- 4:30Speaker 6: last night, pretty entertaining game as far as preseason goes.
- 4:34Speaker 6: And I'm just decided, I'm not excited that the summer
- 4:39Speaker 6: is going away, you know, losing a lot of golf
- 4:42Speaker 6: here and yeah, I mean getting dark now, you know,
- 4:45Speaker 6: eight thirty ish and losing time all summer. So but
- 4:49Speaker 6: always good to see football back on your TV people.
- 4:52Speaker 6: And with that, like I said, let's just get right
- 4:55Speaker 6: into this interview with Paul pa Like I said, he's
- 4:59Speaker 6: gonna tell you everything about himself.
- 5:01Speaker 2: We're gonna have some fun.
- 5:02Speaker 6: And by the way, he even turns the chairs and
- 5:04Speaker 6: does a little interviewing of the sports governor, Vince Right.
- 5:08Speaker 2: So with that, miss Paul Allen, all.
- 5:13Speaker 6: Right, everybody, Vince Right, host of the Sports Dune Right podcast,
- 5:17Speaker 6: sports Governor of Minnesota.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And let me tell you something, folks. You see you
- 5:20Speaker 2: see who's here, I mean, you see the legend on
- 5:23Speaker 2: the screen himself.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Right on.
- 5:27Speaker 6: But when when PA Paul Allen reached out and said
- 5:32Speaker 6: that he would do this podcast.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I mean, that's a big one.
- 5:35Speaker 6: The man literally just walked through the door from training
- 5:38Speaker 6: camp and he's sitting down on a Friday night of
- 5:40Speaker 6: all nights, to talk with us here on the Sports
- 5:42Speaker 6: Don't Right podcast. So the Sports Governor doesn't let anybody
- 5:46Speaker 6: in the situation room. But this one time, this one time,
- 5:51Speaker 6: we're gonna welcome mister Paul Allen.
- 5:53Speaker 2: You know, I'm miss p a k fan, the voice
- 5:55Speaker 2: of the Vikings, the voice of Canterbury Downs, and Paul,
- 5:59Speaker 2: thank you for joining us. Man.
- 6:01Speaker 4: How you doing I'm doing well. Thank you first and
- 6:05Speaker 4: foremost with respect. It's Canterbury Park and that's okay. It
- 6:11Speaker 4: happens every so long.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I'm aging myself, aging yourself.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Look at me. I think I got all. I think
- 6:17Speaker 4: I got called Moses on Twitter today. But also, you know,
- 6:23Speaker 4: we we never have met, and and following your work
- 6:26Speaker 4: from Afar, there just was something with the way you
- 6:30Speaker 4: were doing things where I'm like, you know what, if
- 6:33Speaker 4: he's interested, you know, man, I'd love to come on
- 6:35Speaker 4: there close to the season and talk about Vikings football.
- 6:38Speaker 4: I don't do that very often. I don't do this
- 6:41Speaker 4: very often. So thank you very much for having.
- 6:43Speaker 6: Me and much appreciated Pa. So let's all right, well,
- 6:47Speaker 6: you know, let's just get to him. And there's so
- 6:48Speaker 6: many questions, so little time. So, you know, Paul, you're
- 6:52Speaker 6: from the East Coast, originally out in the DC area.
- 6:54Speaker 6: Why don't you kind of tell everybody just kind of,
- 6:56Speaker 6: you know, growing up, because you've been kind of all
- 6:59Speaker 6: over the place, California, Philippines.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Fill the people in on the trek of how you
- 7:04Speaker 2: kind of wound up here to Minnesota.
- 7:06Speaker 4: All right, I'm sixty years of age and I was
- 7:11Speaker 4: I was born into a staunch Mormon family in Idaho,
- 7:16Speaker 4: and that that was actually my birth name was Paul
- 7:22Speaker 4: Paul Webb. All right. Now, my mom, you know, God
- 7:25Speaker 4: rest her soul. She divorced several times along the way,
- 7:29Speaker 4: so there ended up being a name change, moving from
- 7:32Speaker 4: Idaho to Washington, d C. U then Washington, d C.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Six months in Hawaii, then a year and a half
- 7:39Speaker 4: in the Philippines. My first stepdad who changed my name
- 7:44Speaker 4: to Paul Allen. He he worked for a company called
- 7:47Speaker 4: Litton and they were just doing something with the US
- 7:51Speaker 4: military and China and Taiwan and Japan and stuff, so
- 7:55Speaker 4: we had to be in the Philippines. Uh so, yeah,
- 7:58Speaker 4: I remember that. That was like half of fourth and
- 8:02Speaker 4: all of fifth. Great. Then I come back to DC,
- 8:05Speaker 4: and you know, Mamma splits again, and I end up
- 8:09Speaker 4: in southern California, where I went to high school and
- 8:12Speaker 4: junior college. That's where I started getting on the on
- 8:15Speaker 4: the rooftops of racetracks like Santa Anita Hollywood Park in
- 8:18Speaker 4: del Mar while riding for the Pasadena Star News covering
- 8:22Speaker 4: horse racing and high school sports. That got me into
- 8:25Speaker 4: horse racing, which I kind of always liked. You know,
- 8:28Speaker 4: when you're in seventy I believe it's seventy seven, nineteen
- 8:31Speaker 4: seventy seven, so I would have been ten or eleven.
- 8:35Speaker 4: A couple of horses named Affirmed and Ali Dar I
- 8:38Speaker 4: hooked up in the Triple Ground and like the whole
- 8:40Speaker 4: thing was separated by all three races by that much,
- 8:43Speaker 4: and so I got bit by that. We didn't have
- 8:45Speaker 4: many channels back then. Then I went to San Francisco
- 8:51Speaker 4: auditioned to become racetrack announcer at Bay Meadows Racecourse, which
- 8:56Speaker 4: no longer exists. God chose that I get to win
- 8:59Speaker 4: that job despite no experience. Canterbury Park opens and they
- 9:05Speaker 4: must have liked something they saw because they got me
- 9:09Speaker 4: to come back there. So for five years I was
- 9:11Speaker 4: doing six months in San Francisco, filling in for a
- 9:15Speaker 4: guy in Grand Island, Nebraska for a month and a half,
- 9:18Speaker 4: up to Shakapy for three and a half months. So
- 9:20Speaker 4: I did that for about four or five years. Landed
- 9:23Speaker 4: here full time in ninety eight with a job at
- 9:25Speaker 4: KFAM and also Canterbury, and then in two thousand and two,
- 9:32Speaker 4: God decided it's time to make him a play by
- 9:35Speaker 4: play voice of an NFL team, even though he's never
- 9:38Speaker 4: done it professionally and he didn't go to college. So
- 9:41Speaker 4: that was O two. So this will be my twenty
- 9:43Speaker 4: fifth year, and I just can't share how much professionally
- 9:48Speaker 4: blessed I've been with that through it. Two kids and
- 9:53Speaker 4: one's twenty five, the others twenty three. And here we are,
- 9:57Speaker 4: here of our Lord, twenty twenty six, getting ready for
- 10:00Speaker 4: what should be an exciting Viking season. Let me ask
- 10:02Speaker 4: you a question real quick. I want to slip that
- 10:04Speaker 4: a little bit absolutely like with these local sports teams,
- 10:07Speaker 4: and I'd say, Vikings and Gophers football my name, and Timberwolves.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Maybe let's let's put those three in a basket for you. Yep.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Why what's the genesis or the origin of the adoration
- 10:21Speaker 4: you have for the local sports teams and what inspired
- 10:25Speaker 4: you to start this podcast? Sports done right?
- 10:29Speaker 6: Great question, my friend, So let's jump in on the teams.
- 10:33Speaker 6: First big Gopher football fan. I went to the University
- 10:37Speaker 6: of Minnesota, grew up here, go back to the you know,
- 10:40Speaker 6: mid seventies, watching as I call him the original Marion Barber. Yeah,
- 10:45Speaker 6: you know, do his thing at the old Memorial Stadium.
- 10:48Speaker 6: So that's where the love of Gopher football comes from.
- 10:51Speaker 6: I actually just gave up my season tickets. I was
- 10:53Speaker 6: on a twenty one year run wown ticket holder. But
- 10:57Speaker 6: you know, I'm fifty seven. I'm right there with you
- 10:59Speaker 6: in as. I just want to do some different things
- 11:01Speaker 6: and stuff on the weekends. Timberwolves, you know, a big
- 11:06Speaker 6: basketball fan, and back in what was that eighty eight,
- 11:08Speaker 6: eighty nine, whatever year that was they came into the league.
- 11:12Speaker 6: You know, I was just man, I was doing cartwheels
- 11:15Speaker 6: and I'll never forget first time the Lakers came into
- 11:17Speaker 6: town down at the old Metro Dome because Magic Johnson
- 11:21Speaker 6: is my favorite player and the game winning overtime.
- 11:26Speaker 2: In me and Rick Kamla who was in Yes Gold
- 11:30Speaker 2: Rick Hamlin.
- 11:31Speaker 6: The old fraternity Rickson over mother of mine over at
- 11:35Speaker 6: the university and a friend.
- 11:37Speaker 2: So we moved down to the lower deck for overtime.
- 11:40Speaker 6: Lakers win the game, Magic's running off, I stick the
- 11:44Speaker 6: hand down there and get a high five from Magic.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Wow.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:48Speaker 2: It's like, oh, I'm never washing his hand again.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:50Speaker 6: And you know, kind of the same for the other
- 11:52Speaker 6: teams too, you know, the Twins and stuff as well.
- 11:55Speaker 6: And you know, I just it's really nice because nobody
- 12:00Speaker 6: really thinks of Minnesota in terms of you know, hardcore
- 12:04Speaker 6: sports fans.
- 12:05Speaker 2: You know, you think of New York.
- 12:06Speaker 4: I wouldn't go that far. I mean traveling with the
- 12:09Speaker 4: Vikings and talking to play by play guys in other
- 12:12Speaker 4: markets and media members and other markets. And you know,
- 12:15Speaker 4: when you do it a quarter century, you eventually like
- 12:18Speaker 4: a soldier field because of where we call the games,
- 12:21Speaker 4: or some ushers and elevator people at lambeau Field, even
- 12:26Speaker 4: in Detroit. You know, I see the same people year
- 12:29Speaker 4: after year, and I know that that to a man,
- 12:33Speaker 4: a lot of them have a deeply rooted respect for
- 12:37Speaker 4: the dedication of the Minnesota sports fan. Now, that could
- 12:41Speaker 4: be a nice way of saying, I mean, you guys
- 12:45Speaker 4: have taken it on the chin a lot with a
- 12:47Speaker 4: lot of different teams, so we feel for you. But no,
- 12:51Speaker 4: I think people respect this fan base more than you
- 12:54Speaker 4: would think.
- 12:54Speaker 6: I must be hearing a lot of craft from my
- 12:56Speaker 6: Chicago family. That's a different beast, I mean exactly.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Yeah, And I'm not going to say Chicago's Philadelphia because
- 13:03Speaker 4: it's not. But uh, but man, Chicago sports fans can
- 13:07Speaker 4: be salty, but holy cow, are they smart?
- 13:11Speaker 2: Right right?
- 13:11Speaker 6: Exactly Now to answer the second part of the question,
- 13:14Speaker 6: how we started the podcast, I was a big fan
- 13:18Speaker 6: and I don't know if you're familiar Doug and Ryan Stewart,
- 13:21Speaker 6: they were called the two Live stews back in the day.
- 13:23Speaker 6: Oh yeah, based out of Atlanta. Yeah, and as black
- 13:28Speaker 6: radio you know hosts. I mean they were on top
- 13:31Speaker 6: of the world for you know, about four or five years.
- 13:34Speaker 6: I mean they were all over the places, you know,
- 13:36Speaker 6: So what.
- 13:36Speaker 4: Do you mean they were on top with like comparatively
- 13:38Speaker 4: speaking to other black radio hosts, Yes, they were blacked
- 13:42Speaker 4: breaking into this.
- 13:44Speaker 6: Game nationally yea, yes, and they were nationally syndicated, so
- 13:49Speaker 6: you can get the show across the country. And as
- 13:53Speaker 6: they went away, Doug Stewart came back with a podcast,
- 13:57Speaker 6: and a bunch of us were in the chain room
- 14:00Speaker 6: and it was a live show, live chat, and you know,
- 14:02Speaker 6: people commenting and this and that, and so people all
- 14:06Speaker 6: of a sudden started taking their shots, so to speak, right,
- 14:09Speaker 6: And then somebody reached out to me and they said, hey, man,
- 14:12Speaker 6: can you come on our show and you know, talk
- 14:14Speaker 6: about Minnesota sports. And so went on there a couple
- 14:17Speaker 6: of times. Every time I went on, they played Princess
- 14:19Speaker 6: Pop Life and then they started introducing me as the
- 14:22Speaker 6: sports governor of Minnesota.
- 14:25Speaker 2: That's cool, right, right, So I was just like, well,
- 14:29Speaker 2: here we go, let me take my shot.
- 14:31Speaker 4: Yeah. Now that was down in Atlanta or national Now
- 14:34Speaker 4: that was here.
- 14:36Speaker 6: Their show was syndicated, so you could hear the show everywhere. Yeah,
- 14:40Speaker 6: and then so yeah, so then I just started taking
- 14:42Speaker 6: my shot and that's sweet. Over the past ten years
- 14:45Speaker 6: or so, yeah, just slowly built it up.
- 14:48Speaker 4: And you know, you know that that story, in a
- 14:50Speaker 4: roundabout way reminds me of you know, kind of a
- 14:53Speaker 4: mentor of mine here and he had a radio show
- 14:56Speaker 4: on on WCCO for a long time, Dark Star. He
- 15:01Speaker 4: met Dark or familiar with him, one of the one
- 15:04Speaker 4: of the, if not the most naturally funny people I've
- 15:08Speaker 4: ever met with biting humor. And as I recall, Dark,
- 15:13Speaker 4: God rest his soul, whose real name is George Hutton
- 15:17Speaker 4: Chapel Uh. He used to call Suture Ray and Roycey
- 15:22Speaker 4: I think on fifteen hundred AM. And you know, he
- 15:26Speaker 4: worked at a car dealership. But one time he called
- 15:29Speaker 4: and he had information that either Bud Grant was coming
- 15:34Speaker 4: back or like he was leaving, but it was Bud
- 15:37Speaker 4: Grant related and it was big and he was right,
- 15:40Speaker 4: and then he got hired and then turned that into decades.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Yeah of a lot a three to zero and Canterbury
- 15:49Speaker 4: Park and that show he had with Mike, Max Lavelle,
- 15:52Speaker 4: ne yea beyond It. Roycey was on it, the sports
- 15:55Speaker 4: reporters or whatever. Yeah, so man, that your story right there.
- 16:00Speaker 4: We're here like started in a chat room and you
- 16:03Speaker 4: know this is breaking out and then Stew's or whomever
- 16:05Speaker 4: or Doug or whatever, like, hey, why don't you give
- 16:08Speaker 4: it a try? And then it turns into this man.
- 16:09Speaker 4: That's cool.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, I appreciate it man.
- 16:12Speaker 6: So so yeah, that's how we started Sports Done Right
- 16:14Speaker 6: Podcasts about ten eleven years ago, and yeah, yeah, I
- 16:18Speaker 6: knocking it out ever since, with you know, and getting
- 16:22Speaker 6: to know you know, obviously local media like yourself. We
- 16:26Speaker 6: you know, this year, I've kind of focused on having
- 16:28Speaker 6: a lot of the local media on. So we've had
- 16:30Speaker 6: Julia Daniels from Carrie Levin, Pierre Newsham's made his second appearance,
- 16:35Speaker 6: Chris Long from Channel five.
- 16:37Speaker 4: Yeah know them all.
- 16:39Speaker 6: Yeah, oh yeah, yeah. So just proud and honored to
- 16:42Speaker 6: have you here. So let's get to it, man, horse racing?
- 16:46Speaker 6: What is it about horse racing.
- 16:49Speaker 2: That you love? Paul?
- 16:50Speaker 6: I mean, you know, you have been doing the horse
- 16:53Speaker 6: racing as long as you've been with the Vikings, if
- 16:55Speaker 6: not obviously a little bit longer.
- 16:57Speaker 2: What is that you really love about horse racing?
- 17:01Speaker 4: That's a wonderful question that I don't think i've ever received. Well,
- 17:06Speaker 4: I've called about thirty five thousand of them over thirty
- 17:10Speaker 4: five years, maybe thirty six, more than half my life,
- 17:14Speaker 4: but thirty two here and like a football play, it's
- 17:20Speaker 4: it's it's live, reality based action taking place that you
- 17:26Speaker 4: cannot artificially imitate. So therefore, with horse racing, like I
- 17:33Speaker 4: called ten at Canterbury Park last night, all right, now
- 17:36Speaker 4: we're in the second half of our season. I got
- 17:38Speaker 4: a Vikings Giants game on the horizon, you know, trying
- 17:41Speaker 4: to make forty six Michael Brisco and twenty three James
- 17:45Speaker 4: Pierre and twenty Chuck Demings, trying to make it second
- 17:48Speaker 4: nature for the quick Twitch, for the simulcast on Fox
- 17:51Speaker 4: nine and k Fan a week from Saturday. Then we
- 17:54Speaker 4: got the k Fan Show and things in life. So
- 17:57Speaker 4: a lot's going on in August for me. So it
- 18:00Speaker 4: doesn't necessarily mean with every single race, I'm like, this
- 18:04Speaker 4: is the most compelling thing in the world. But I
- 18:06Speaker 4: can think back to several races last night, several races
- 18:10Speaker 4: Sunday where at this stage of my career, it's when
- 18:14Speaker 4: there's a battle and when there's a competition and two
- 18:17Speaker 4: or three of them are coming down to the wire together,
- 18:20Speaker 4: or you catch one on the far turn making a
- 18:22Speaker 4: big move and then you dive into it and stamp it.
- 18:26Speaker 4: I just really really love play by play related things,
- 18:31Speaker 4: and that's what this is. That's what calling Vikings games
- 18:35Speaker 4: is and I just think God built me for that.
- 18:38Speaker 4: I mean, you know, I've done k Fans since nineteen
- 18:42Speaker 4: ninety eight, full time since ninety eight, and I love
- 18:45Speaker 4: doing a radio show, don't get me wrong. It's the
- 18:47Speaker 4: one that goes around the year round. It's the one
- 18:50Speaker 4: that pays the most and quite honestly is not even
- 18:53Speaker 4: close so and a lot of my deeply rooted lifetime
- 18:57Speaker 4: friends are there, but it's the one that really takes
- 19:01Speaker 4: the most work, and it's not you know am they're
- 19:05Speaker 4: racing in the Sports Done Right podcast takes the lead
- 19:08Speaker 4: by five top of the stretch. Here comes Vince Right,
- 19:11Speaker 4: where you get to play with your voice and describe
- 19:14Speaker 4: and enunciate, or Right takes the snap, shakes the shoulders,
- 19:19Speaker 4: fires to the left side, caught by Vincent Right, you
- 19:21Speaker 4: know where you're kind of building a crescendo with it.
- 19:24Speaker 4: So I just really really feel God built me to
- 19:26Speaker 4: do things like that professionally, and I'm happy that he
- 19:29Speaker 4: did because I love it.
- 19:31Speaker 6: You know, you talk about crescendo building and the simularities
- 19:36Speaker 6: actually of calling the NFL game, calling horse horse racing race.
- 19:43Speaker 6: What does it take on the race side to be
- 19:45Speaker 6: a good announcer because you know, I've seen film. I
- 19:48Speaker 6: was watching film, you know before you jumped on here,
- 19:51Speaker 6: you know, trying to follow through the binoculars. You know,
- 19:55Speaker 6: you get what eight to ten different horses you're keeping
- 19:58Speaker 6: track of. You know, you got to just see everything.
- 20:03Speaker 4: What is that like?
- 20:04Speaker 2: You know, that's what I've always kind of lost.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Yah. See, that's awesome how you explain that, and you know,
- 20:10Speaker 4: just your natural childlike joy it figures up with the
- 20:14Speaker 4: way you describe that.
- 20:15Speaker 3: It.
- 20:16Speaker 4: Stuff like that touches me and and and it just
- 20:20Speaker 4: it inspires me because it helps me see the forest
- 20:24Speaker 4: for the trees. With these jobs and things with you know,
- 20:29Speaker 4: ministry related things that are happening in my life, and
- 20:32Speaker 4: I don't necessarily have enough time to focus on on
- 20:36Speaker 4: some other things that that I really really want to do.
- 20:38Speaker 4: So I'm not saying I get run down or sour.
- 20:41Speaker 4: I don't, but there are times I need freshening and
- 20:43Speaker 4: then I see something like that man and I'm like, wow,
- 20:46Speaker 4: you know that that really means a lot to him.
- 20:48Speaker 4: So I guess I've developed a photographic memory over the
- 20:52Speaker 4: years because of looking at calling so many races and
- 20:56Speaker 4: football games, and you know, getting quick twitch with from
- 21:00Speaker 4: days gone by. Now I don't use cheaters, so I
- 21:04Speaker 4: don't use the I don't, I don't, you know whatever
- 21:07Speaker 4: you call them, cheaters, readers, whatever. And here's why. So
- 21:10Speaker 4: this is this is kind of a big advantage or
- 21:13Speaker 4: a big blessing that I have is because and I've
- 21:17Speaker 4: only been to an optometrist one time in my life,
- 21:19Speaker 4: about six years ago, and and I went down the
- 21:22Speaker 4: almost a whole eye chart and then she's like, I
- 21:25Speaker 4: want to look at your retinas, and she said, you
- 21:28Speaker 4: have the strongest thickest retinas I think I've ever seen.
- 21:32Speaker 4: And I've done this twenty five years, and I'm like,
- 21:34Speaker 4: I wonder why, and she nailed it. It's because with
- 21:37Speaker 4: those binoculars, I've gone from high optics to small font,
- 21:44Speaker 4: very small font on rosters and horse racing programs for
- 21:48Speaker 4: so long. Landa, the optometrist told me, you've put your
- 21:53Speaker 4: eyes through calisthenics for twenty seven years. So everything is
- 21:57Speaker 4: stronger than everybody else is because of the high optics
- 22:00Speaker 4: to the small prince. And so that that's a key
- 22:04Speaker 4: underrated blessing to calling races and calling football and not
- 22:08Speaker 4: having to be wonky with glasses and binoculars. So really
- 22:13Speaker 4: with the horse race, I love what you said early
- 22:17Speaker 4: in the equation. I've said it before. Maybe you saw it,
- 22:20Speaker 4: but if you didn't, it's brilliant because calling a horse
- 22:23Speaker 4: race and calling a single football play are analogous in
- 22:29Speaker 4: that it's a they're both crescendo building. Sometimes they're boring
- 22:34Speaker 4: two yard plays. Heads to the left side, stood up
- 22:37Speaker 4: at the line of scrimmage, and he's down at the
- 22:39Speaker 4: thirty eight. It's second and eight pete or a quarter
- 22:42Speaker 4: horse race, or a horse wins by ten lanks. And
- 22:46Speaker 4: look at Vince raightgo kind of a boring race with
- 22:48Speaker 4: a small field, but mostly it's and they're racing. Murray
- 22:55Speaker 4: takes the snap, then da da da da da da
- 22:57Speaker 4: da da da da da into the final along. Look
- 23:00Speaker 4: at Vince Wright's surging down the wire, pulls away by two.
- 23:05Speaker 4: Jefferson catches it at the twenty, turns to the right,
- 23:08Speaker 4: he's to the fifteen the ten touchdown. So they're both
- 23:12Speaker 4: crescendo building situations. And and I try to thrive in it,
- 23:18Speaker 4: and I'm you know, it's it's so much fun when
- 23:21Speaker 4: the thing's going fast and and like the Minneapolis miracle
- 23:26Speaker 4: and stuff, and just how what a blur that was?
- 23:29Speaker 4: Some of these five force fields down to the wire
- 23:32Speaker 4: together and I get out of it and it's like
- 23:34Speaker 4: it's a blur. But then I'll watch or listen to
- 23:37Speaker 4: it back and I'm like, dang man, that was fun, right.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Right, pa?
- 23:43Speaker 6: Let me ask just a couple more questions on the
- 23:45Speaker 6: on the horse race, and then we're gonna move on
- 23:47Speaker 6: to the vikings and.
- 23:48Speaker 2: You're a little bit more of your career here on
- 23:51Speaker 2: the radio side. But how you know.
- 23:57Speaker 6: I've been to you know, I've been to del mar
- 23:58Speaker 6: I've been to a couple of parts around the country,
- 24:00Speaker 6: Old Arlington down in Chicago before that went away. How
- 24:05Speaker 6: do you how would you describe the horse racing scene
- 24:08Speaker 6: here in the Twin Cities. You know, it's been up,
- 24:11Speaker 6: it's been maybe down a little bit lately here, you know,
- 24:15Speaker 6: with questions and unknowns about you know, prizes or e seies, me,
- 24:19Speaker 6: prize money, things like that.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Future. But got you, Yeah, what are your thoughts on it?
- 24:24Speaker 4: Well, first and foremost, if anybody cares, and you may,
- 24:29Speaker 4: it's uh, it's a travesty. It's a shame that there
- 24:32Speaker 4: is not horse racing in the city of Chicago. So Arlington,
- 24:37Speaker 4: Arlington Park, Arlington International, the Arlington Million, the Beverly d
- 24:41Speaker 4: just filled. Georg Jeff All is everything great about that place?
- 24:46Speaker 4: It's it's okay. Kevin Warren, the president of the Bears,
- 24:50Speaker 4: is a pretty good friend of mine, so I understand
- 24:52Speaker 4: what's happening there, but it may not happen. And now
- 24:55Speaker 4: there's no Arlington. Well, Hawthorne just closed. That's og That's
- 25:00Speaker 4: It's like about Moral that's in the city and it's
- 25:04Speaker 4: going to close maybe forever. So that's sad. Secondly, speaking
- 25:09Speaker 4: for myself, and like Kevin Gorg who's the backup announcer
- 25:13Speaker 4: and an analystic, Canterbury does wild work on TV, and
- 25:17Speaker 4: the rest of us in the press box, and you
- 25:21Speaker 4: know a fair amount of other people. We were very
- 25:23Speaker 4: secure recognizing our lot in life. And here's what I mean.
- 25:27Speaker 4: The first money has declined. We're down to three days
- 25:31Speaker 4: of racing a week. Minnesota is an expensive state and
- 25:34Speaker 4: we are reliant on people coming from all over the
- 25:36Speaker 4: country to bring their horses. So yes, the horse population
- 25:40Speaker 4: is maybe as low as I've seen it in my
- 25:42Speaker 4: thirty two there. But we recognize our lot in life.
- 25:46Speaker 4: And here's what I mean. Like, for instance, this summer,
- 25:50Speaker 4: there's a Greade one winning trainer, very prominent name all
- 25:54Speaker 4: over the country named Gary Contessa, and he recently retired.
- 25:59Speaker 4: Well his grand kids live here, so he's spending a
- 26:01Speaker 4: lot of time in our racetrack. I mean, I think
- 26:04Speaker 4: he had horses in the Kentucky Derby, the Breeders Cup,
- 26:07Speaker 4: you know, big time trainer in New York and stuff.
- 26:10Speaker 4: And so he's at our track now and I'll talk
- 26:13Speaker 4: to him a little bit. And I've heard this a
- 26:15Speaker 4: lot from people around the country is we have a
- 26:19Speaker 4: vibe at Canterbury Park that is almost impossible to emulate
- 26:24Speaker 4: because Minnesota is not a heritage or old school horse
- 26:29Speaker 4: racing state in that you didn't grow up reading daily
- 26:33Speaker 4: racing form following Seabiscuit in the progeny of Secretariat and
- 26:38Speaker 4: all that popped up in the eighties. Big crowds Minnesota.
- 26:42Speaker 4: A lot of people at Canterbury want to spread out
- 26:44Speaker 4: of blanket, bring their families and bet fifteen dollars a
- 26:48Speaker 4: race to show and spend about two hundred dollars on
- 26:51Speaker 4: food and beverage and then leave after four races, or
- 26:54Speaker 4: watch the Corgi dogs like we have Sunday. So that
- 26:58Speaker 4: is you say that to people around the country and
- 27:00Speaker 4: they're like, whoa, what's that? All right? Well, we average
- 27:03Speaker 4: about sixty five hundred people a day. They're crowds sometimes
- 27:06Speaker 4: of fifteen to twenty thousand and tracks on track. Attendance
- 27:11Speaker 4: across the country is declining and ours is on a
- 27:14Speaker 4: little dip this year, but we always go that way.
- 27:16Speaker 4: Our food and beverage always goes that way while we're
- 27:19Speaker 4: second or third level racing. With myself, and don't take
- 27:23Speaker 4: this arrogantly, please, but with myself, Kevin gorg Angela Herman,
- 27:28Speaker 4: Jeff Maday, the four most prominent you see on camera.
- 27:31Speaker 4: I would stack our talent at Canterbury Park against anybody's
- 27:36Speaker 4: in the country, and I firmly believe we'd win. I
- 27:39Speaker 4: think I might be the longest tenured announcer in the country.
- 27:42Speaker 4: Somebody asked me that the other day. I guess I
- 27:44Speaker 4: really hadn't thought about it. So, you know, people, we
- 27:47Speaker 4: feel good about the talent that we put out there
- 27:50Speaker 4: to keep it fun, but recognizing what our lot in
- 27:53Speaker 4: life is and that we are an entertainment facility that
- 27:56Speaker 4: has horse racing and you know, once we start getting
- 27:59Speaker 4: all we found up over the fact that the fields
- 28:01Speaker 4: are small, the purses are down. We can't compete with tracks,
- 28:05Speaker 4: ABC D and E. Okay that matters, because you know
- 28:09Speaker 4: we don't. We had a deal with the Shaka Peemen
- 28:11Speaker 4: walking and Sue where I think they got frustrated with
- 28:14Speaker 4: us constantly trying to get slots, so they do this.
- 28:18Speaker 4: Some people do this, but somebody actually came to our
- 28:21Speaker 4: racetrack and said, if you stop chasing slots and if
- 28:27Speaker 4: you signed this about sports betting, just like fifteen years ago,
- 28:30Speaker 4: we'll give you one hundred million dollars, one hundred million
- 28:34Speaker 4: dollars to just go away. So of course we took it.
- 28:39Speaker 4: Eighty of it went to purses, twenty of it went
- 28:42Speaker 4: to marketing. We have the best in infield video board
- 28:46Speaker 4: and total board. Yeah, I mean we want that thing.
- 28:50Speaker 4: I don't know, maybe fifteen years ago and it's still fantastic.
- 28:54Speaker 4: So but we don't have that anymore. We'd like to
- 28:56Speaker 4: be part of sports betting, even if it's brick and mortar.
- 29:00Speaker 4: That's not happening. So we're not you know, I'm certainly
- 29:03Speaker 4: not saying that that we're on a slippery slope that's
- 29:06Speaker 4: fast that way. But you know, we do need something
- 29:11Speaker 4: to bolster us this place. I don't I don't know
- 29:15Speaker 4: what my life would be like not calling races at
- 29:18Speaker 4: Canterbury Park. And the reason I say that is because
- 29:21Speaker 4: you know, there been some calls with the Vikings that
- 29:24Speaker 4: people seem to have remembered for a while. Kay San
- 29:27Speaker 4: is og with me starting there in ninety eight with
- 29:30Speaker 4: Dubay and Abbott. But Canterbury Park brought me to Minnesota
- 29:35Speaker 4: in nineteen ninety five and I was a bad racetrack
- 29:39Speaker 4: announcer trying to beat River Deadman, and they believed in me.
- 29:43Speaker 4: Randy Sampson and the Sampson family believed in me. And
- 29:46Speaker 4: you know, I've worked weekends in the summer for probably
- 29:50Speaker 4: thirty five years. And you know, now I'm at a
- 29:53Speaker 4: stage of my life with my daughter going to graduate
- 29:56Speaker 4: school in southern California where she's twenty three, like the
- 30:00Speaker 4: get out there more to see her. My son's about
- 30:02Speaker 4: to be twenty six, moving up the chain food and
- 30:05Speaker 4: beverage at Canterbury Park. There are just other things that
- 30:08Speaker 4: I would like to do, but I just really can't
- 30:12Speaker 4: get myself to say that it's over. And Canterbury k
- 30:17Speaker 4: Fan is great with this where you know, they recognize
- 30:20Speaker 4: sometimes Paul needs depression. Sometimes Paul needs just a day
- 30:24Speaker 4: or two off to continue to see the sports world
- 30:28Speaker 4: through the eyes of that child that people seem to
- 30:32Speaker 4: embrace despite my age. So my bosses and kay Fan
- 30:37Speaker 4: and iHeartRadio and Canterbury and the Samson family and those
- 30:41Speaker 4: in the press box, they're the best of the best,
- 30:44Speaker 4: ever to best. But nevertheless, there's still a lot of
- 30:47Speaker 4: work goes into it. And I love it, but a
- 30:50Speaker 4: lot of work goes into it.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Wow, very well, said Man.
- 30:54Speaker 4: I was a little long winded there.
- 30:55Speaker 6: Oh no, that's what it's all about, man, because you know,
- 30:59Speaker 6: that's why I love having these conversations with you know,
- 31:02Speaker 6: local media like yourself, Pa, because I want people to
- 31:05Speaker 6: hear these types of stories. Man, I mean, that was awesome.
- 31:09Speaker 6: Let me ask you this before we jump into the
- 31:10Speaker 6: purple here. You know, you're you're so good at calling
- 31:14Speaker 6: these football games and horse racing. Have you thought about
- 31:17Speaker 6: jumping in any other sports man, trying to call some
- 31:20Speaker 6: basketball or you know, some baseball or something.
- 31:23Speaker 4: That's a great question. I was, quite honestly at the
- 31:27Speaker 4: end of the twenty twenty one season with the Vikings,
- 31:30Speaker 4: I was fed up calling games for them. I have
- 31:32Speaker 4: my personal reasons I'm not I'm not paid by the
- 31:35Speaker 4: Vikings to call games what I do do for them,
- 31:38Speaker 4: like x amount of Kevin O'Connell interviews, these preseason TV
- 31:42Speaker 4: games coming up basically to be a hired gun for them,
- 31:45Speaker 4: kind of a contractor is so I get that ten
- 31:48Speaker 4: ninety nine from them. But I'm paid to call games
- 31:52Speaker 4: by iHeart. So with that said, you know, I'm still
- 31:56Speaker 4: around there a lot during the football season. They know
- 31:59Speaker 4: they can trust me, they know they can trust my heart,
- 32:02Speaker 4: and that's been the case for a while, so they
- 32:04Speaker 4: give me amazing access to do the jobs that I do.
- 32:10Speaker 4: End of the twenty twenty one season, I just got
- 32:12Speaker 4: that up with some things and the way people were
- 32:14Speaker 4: being treated and the way, you know, some people have guidelines,
- 32:17Speaker 4: some people have rules, and the way the way some
- 32:20Speaker 4: people were being treated, and I just didn't like it.
- 32:21Speaker 4: So I didn't want to do the job anymore, so
- 32:23Speaker 4: much so that I let people know with Kam some
- 32:27Speaker 4: with the Vikings, I guess, and the Minnesota whild that
- 32:29Speaker 4: I'd like to call a couple of Minnesota Wild Games.
- 32:32Speaker 4: And I've never played hockey, and I don't know it
- 32:35Speaker 4: as well as I know the NBA or the NFL,
- 32:37Speaker 4: but I think the the style of it, in the
- 32:40Speaker 4: pace of it's kind of built for I'm kind of
- 32:42Speaker 4: built for it.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Yes, So I did two.
- 32:44Speaker 4: Games and I was I mean, they sounded like Game
- 32:46Speaker 4: sevens of the Stanley Cup.
- 32:48Speaker 2: Find can't happen if you enjoyed. I thought you did.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I appreciate that I had so much fun that,
- 32:58Speaker 4: you know, I mean, yes, yeah, I would like to
- 33:01Speaker 4: call some other things, but not at the expense of
- 33:05Speaker 4: a growing ministry. God is put in front of me
- 33:08Speaker 4: from a Protestant Christian standpoint, none of which I asked for.
- 33:12Speaker 4: He's put a lot of things in front of me,
- 33:14Speaker 4: and not at the expense of that growing I will
- 33:17Speaker 4: leave jobs and not worry about my bottom line before
- 33:22Speaker 4: I will give up what he's growing. So that's kind
- 33:25Speaker 4: of limited that. During the course of my career, like
- 33:28Speaker 4: after nine in the NFC title game, and yeah, maybe
- 33:32Speaker 4: twenty thirteen or fourteen, there are a couple of prominent
- 33:35Speaker 4: names whose agents kind of low key reached out to
- 33:37Speaker 4: me just asking me, like, you know what I'm thinking
- 33:40Speaker 4: about and after chatting with them and everything and looking
- 33:43Speaker 4: at what jobs I would compromise here, and you know
- 33:47Speaker 4: the pay bump, but how much is it going to
- 33:50Speaker 4: be compared to Let's just put it this way, like
- 33:53Speaker 4: leaving on a Thursday, going to Jacksonville for a Friday
- 33:57Speaker 4: practice and they're gonna have a game against Houston. Doing
- 34:00Speaker 4: the game and coming back Sunday night. That sounds cool,
- 34:03Speaker 4: whether it's radio or TV, that sounds cool. But working
- 34:08Speaker 4: with a team and and being with people like Rob
- 34:12Speaker 4: Razinski and Ryan Munnin's and and and Tom West and
- 34:16Speaker 4: just so many names from all the way back in
- 34:19Speaker 4: the beginning. I like sweating the wins and the losses
- 34:23Speaker 4: with an individual team, feeling like I, you know, I'm
- 34:26Speaker 4: an ancillary part of this sweat. So I kind of
- 34:30Speaker 4: stiff armed that a little bit. But I don't know.
- 34:32Speaker 4: I called. I called a Wolves game against San Antonio,
- 34:35Speaker 4: and I had fun doing that, but again I'd have
- 34:37Speaker 4: to slow down. I was too excited. Same thing with hockey.
- 34:40Speaker 4: I know I could call both full time and enjoy it,
- 34:44Speaker 4: but but you know I am when I say filled
- 34:48Speaker 4: my pockets, you know, don't don't look at me like
- 34:50Speaker 4: some kind of multi millionaire or anything. When I use
- 34:52Speaker 4: this metaphor or analogy, But there was a large part
- 34:56Speaker 4: of my life where I filled my pockets, but I
- 34:58Speaker 4: emptied my soul and and a lot went into these
- 35:03Speaker 4: jobs that I have and holding them as long as
- 35:06Speaker 4: I have. But there also have been some trade offs,
- 35:10Speaker 4: you know, and and and you know, I think if
- 35:12Speaker 4: you talk to my kids, they'd say that that I've
- 35:14Speaker 4: been a pretty good dad and a pretty dedicated dad.
- 35:17Speaker 4: But you know, there are things that I want to
- 35:20Speaker 4: do with them and things I want to do in
- 35:22Speaker 4: my life before I'm done that would probably prohibit me
- 35:28Speaker 4: from really investigating something in the NHL, something in the
- 35:32Speaker 4: NBA and all that travel and stuff like that.
- 35:35Speaker 6: Absolutely, let me ask you this and again, folks, Paul
- 35:39Speaker 6: Allen pa joining us a k fan voice of the Vikings,
- 35:44Speaker 6: let me let me ask you this. You started a
- 35:47Speaker 6: K fan. What back in ninety eight you said, Yeah,
- 35:50Speaker 6: what has been the biggest change in sports radio for you?
- 35:54Speaker 6: I mean, as kind of an og of it, I mean,
- 35:57Speaker 6: you know, everybody talking, you know, Stephen A Smith of
- 36:01Speaker 6: the world, and you know this is embrace debates and
- 36:04Speaker 6: this and that.
- 36:04Speaker 2: And blah, blah blah.
- 36:06Speaker 6: You know, what are your thoughts on the past thirty
- 36:09Speaker 6: years or so of sports radio and where it's come
- 36:12Speaker 6: to today.
- 36:13Speaker 4: Well, why I really like that question is because there
- 36:18Speaker 4: are you know, to a man, and those who are
- 36:20Speaker 4: in this industry who are watching it because they follow
- 36:23Speaker 4: you or they want to see what Paul has to say.
- 36:26Speaker 4: They know I know what I'm talking about when I
- 36:29Speaker 4: say k fan is one of the if not the
- 36:33Speaker 4: most well respected radio stations for sports or topics, but
- 36:39Speaker 4: sports in the country and men twenty five to fifty
- 36:43Speaker 4: four or people men and women eighteen to thirty four,
- 36:46Speaker 4: eighteen to fifty four, we dominate, and we we've dominated
- 36:52Speaker 4: this market for a long time. We generate a lot
- 36:56Speaker 4: of advertising revenue for k fan and that why why
- 37:01Speaker 4: I'm glad you asked that question, is because when I say,
- 37:04Speaker 4: Minnesota is a habit state, if they like you and
- 37:07Speaker 4: they can trust you and you and they know you
- 37:08Speaker 4: have a common interest and you're gonna stick with them
- 37:12Speaker 4: despite some mistakes or some cancel culture related bull crap,
- 37:16Speaker 4: whatever it is, that they're gonna stick with you. And
- 37:20Speaker 4: that's it. And so from the Power Trip led by
- 37:22Speaker 4: Corey Cove through nine to noon. Dan called the common
- 37:25Speaker 4: man Barrero. You know, its beauty is in the ear
- 37:29Speaker 4: of the beholder. So some can't stand me. I'm too
- 37:32Speaker 4: much of a homer. Some don't like common it's boring.
- 37:35Speaker 3: Uh.
- 37:35Speaker 4: Some with Barrero they think whatever and power trip whatever.
- 37:40Speaker 4: But over the course of time, people this state has
- 37:44Speaker 4: has just kept it top dog in the country where
- 37:48Speaker 4: it wins awards and gets recognized by people all over
- 37:50Speaker 4: the country. That had to be said because the way
- 37:55Speaker 4: it is here and the way we do it here
- 37:57Speaker 4: is not the way people will do it around the country.
- 38:00Speaker 4: And what has changed is not only the social media
- 38:04Speaker 4: aspect of it, where you know, there are people even
- 38:07Speaker 4: in this market who have radio shows or podcasts that
- 38:11Speaker 4: their lives professional lives are lived on social media. And
- 38:15Speaker 4: you know what, with respect to get sports done right
- 38:18Speaker 4: out there, you want to do that right, Yeah, of course. So, hey,
- 38:22Speaker 4: we're all in the same fish bowl, but we're under
- 38:24Speaker 4: different rocks for whatever the reason. But a lot of
- 38:27Speaker 4: people need to recognize h and I guess with respect
- 38:32Speaker 4: that these gigs are hard to find and the lines
- 38:35Speaker 4: are long, and a lot more goes into it than
- 38:37Speaker 4: having the biggest opinion. When the biggest thing's happening and
- 38:40Speaker 4: thinking it's gonna stick forever. So people being loud, feeling
- 38:45Speaker 4: you know that almost in fake activist kind of fashion.
- 38:49Speaker 4: They got to dunk on people and that's gonna sustain.
- 38:52Speaker 4: It doesn't. What sustains is honesty, What sustains is work ethic,
- 38:57Speaker 4: What sustains is trust, and what sustains is what God
- 39:01Speaker 4: chooses to give you when you pray to him about that.
- 39:05Speaker 4: So there are false narratives in the sports radio, radio business,
- 39:10Speaker 4: audio video business with people thinking this is this is
- 39:14Speaker 4: now and it's all fast and everything, and I got
- 39:16Speaker 4: to get after you, right right, you you got after
- 39:19Speaker 4: somebody and got one dunk. But did you win the game,
- 39:23Speaker 4: And that's the question.
- 39:25Speaker 2: The answer is no, right, well said? Well said?
- 39:29Speaker 6: All right, my friend, let's let's talk a little bit
- 39:31Speaker 6: about these uh Minnesota Vikings.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Obviously it's it's all about the quarterbacks.
- 39:36Speaker 4: And fascinating team this year. Events. I mean, now, they're
- 39:41Speaker 4: they're they're they're like snowflakes and that they're all the same,
- 39:45Speaker 4: they all fall the same, but they're different. So go ahead,
- 39:49Speaker 4: this is this is a fascinating bunch I think, I mean,
- 39:53Speaker 4: I in a.
- 39:54Speaker 6: Weird way, Pa, I am really really excited for Vikings
- 39:59Speaker 6: football this year, all the questions that are out there.
- 40:02Speaker 2: I mean, you know, it starts, obviously with the quarterback situation.
- 40:06Speaker 4: Keep talking, I'm gonna pull the shade ahead, boss.
- 40:10Speaker 2: And go so yeah, okay, goole boss.
- 40:14Speaker 6: So No, what I was saying is I'm just so
- 40:16Speaker 6: excited because it starts with the quarterbacks obviously.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a lot going on here.
- 40:23Speaker 6: I mean yeah, and you know, it's just like, but
- 40:29Speaker 6: let's start with the quarterbacks. Let's just okay, let's just start.
- 40:31Speaker 4: I'm gonna play a game with you. Like how many
- 40:33Speaker 4: people have come on your podcast and been like, all right,
- 40:36Speaker 4: cool man. I like the questions, but I want to
- 40:38Speaker 4: learn a little bit about you, what inspires you to
- 40:40Speaker 4: do this. So I'm gonna flip it a little bit,
- 40:42Speaker 4: play game. Okay, all right, all right, So don't smile. Okay,
- 40:48Speaker 4: just don't smile because we're either gonna need a like
- 40:51Speaker 4: a whatever or a now I don't care, or a smile.
- 40:56Speaker 4: And I'm gonna hit you with some topics. And I'm
- 40:58Speaker 4: gonna hit you with topics at and the way I
- 41:01Speaker 4: say them, and you get it, you know, I followed
- 41:05Speaker 4: you from Afar. So, I mean you you kind of
- 41:07Speaker 4: know what's important when it comes to when it comes
- 41:09Speaker 4: to winning at a high level. So I'm gonna diss
- 41:11Speaker 4: some things out and see if I can get two
- 41:12Speaker 4: or three smiles? Ready? Okay, you're gonna stop smiling? You're ready?
- 41:15Speaker 2: Yes, sir, here we go.
- 41:18Speaker 4: Uh. Coach O'Connell, what are you gonna do with ty Felton?
- 41:21Speaker 4: How real is this? What are you gonna do with
- 41:24Speaker 4: ty Felton? Who's chewing up everybody at Minnesota Vikings training camp?
- 41:29Speaker 4: He's getting behind Zamayah Vaughn, Isaiah Rodgers, Josh Mattelus and
- 41:34Speaker 4: Theo Jackson? What are we gonna do with ty Felton?
- 41:37Speaker 4: And is this real? Did it make you smile?
- 41:40Speaker 2: I'm trying very hard not to.
- 41:42Speaker 7: No smile if you like it, okay, yes, yeah, roll
- 41:46Speaker 7: your eyes if it's like boring, no, no, no, okay,
- 41:51Speaker 7: So give me a big smile if you like it,
- 41:53Speaker 7: or a you don't like him.
- 41:56Speaker 4: Next. Haven't seen Kyler run much of training camp, but
- 42:02Speaker 4: when we have, it takes my breath away. What's that
- 42:05Speaker 4: gonna look like in the regular season? Following Bretieston and
- 42:08Speaker 4: Juwan Jennings. Yeah, whoo, finally, finally you know I'm not
- 42:16Speaker 4: I don't I don't bet football, and and if you
- 42:19Speaker 4: know working with the Vikings, I'm not gonna do it,
- 42:21Speaker 4: but I'm gonna put it this way. Caleb Banks is
- 42:25Speaker 4: really sixty five to one to be defensive Rookie of
- 42:29Speaker 4: the Year. Is he gonna win it? I don't know,
- 42:32Speaker 4: but after what I've seen from this cross between a
- 42:35Speaker 4: team Hicks and this monster I'm seeing out there? Are
- 42:38Speaker 4: you kidding me? Sixty? You're telling me I can put
- 42:41Speaker 4: ten dollars on that and and and scoop six hundred
- 42:44Speaker 4: and sixty dollars? WHOA Does that make you smile?
- 42:48Speaker 2: All of Yes, and hopefully all the way the.
- 42:51Speaker 4: Topics that I just knew would make you smile.
- 42:53Speaker 6: Yes, Yes, I appreciate him because yeah, and you know,
- 42:57Speaker 6: so we'll jump back to Caleb basically, yeah.
- 42:59Speaker 4: He's I mean, what is to talk about with the quarterback?
- 43:01Speaker 4: I mean, you know, I don't doom scroll because it's
- 43:05Speaker 4: just it becomes too false god for me, so I
- 43:08Speaker 4: back away from it. But McCarthy, you just How'm I
- 43:13Speaker 4: gonna put this? Make sure you know who you're following
- 43:17Speaker 4: for the information. Okay, Alec Lewis Athletic, Ben Gasline, Star Tribune,
- 43:23Speaker 4: Kevin Seaffert, ESPN, Dane miss Utani from the Pioneer Press.
- 43:29Speaker 4: So we'll start with those four right there who tweet
- 43:32Speaker 4: and write a lot. They you know, when they say
- 43:37Speaker 4: something has been terrible or something has been great, those
- 43:41Speaker 4: guys know what they're talking about. Okay, So keep that
- 43:44Speaker 4: in context. And when I say overall the whole thing,
- 43:48Speaker 4: McCarthy has not been as terrible as some of these
- 43:52Speaker 4: people want you to think, because it goes back to, hey, Pa,
- 43:55Speaker 4: what's the most different about radio or whatever in the
- 43:57Speaker 4: last thirty years that somebody either has to be Tom
- 44:01Speaker 4: Brady or Spurgeon Win either got to be goat or
- 44:05Speaker 4: they got to be terrible. That's not the case. Now.
- 44:08Speaker 4: With that said, it's apparent to me Kyler has opened
- 44:12Speaker 4: a lead and maybe a large lead, for the starting
- 44:16Speaker 4: quarterback job for the Minnesota Vikings. And I love JJ
- 44:19Speaker 4: and McCarthy may watch this and I'll see him next time.
- 44:22Speaker 4: We'll embrace and if he asked me about what I
- 44:25Speaker 4: was talking about, then I'll absolutely openly talk about it.
- 44:28Speaker 4: But like today at practice, you know, I didn't watch
- 44:31Speaker 4: the final half hour, but McCarthy was really sharp today
- 44:35Speaker 4: and speeding things up. And I watched a couple of
- 44:38Speaker 4: plays where Aaron Jones went on a wheel route, Jefferson
- 44:41Speaker 4: broke off a play in the middle of the field
- 44:43Speaker 4: where he got open and it should be pitch and
- 44:46Speaker 4: catch and Murray missed both. But that's okay, that's what
- 44:49Speaker 4: we do now. So we just need to get to
- 44:53Speaker 4: the Ravens joint practices because with the Giants game, if
- 44:58Speaker 4: Murray and McCarthy were to play, I wouldn't be surprised.
- 45:01Speaker 4: But the joint practices against the Ravens means so much
- 45:06Speaker 4: for so many on this team because you don't know
- 45:08Speaker 4: the plays that are coming. You're you haven't been opposite
- 45:11Speaker 4: like you know, Vince is trying to rush all day
- 45:14Speaker 4: after day after day after day. So that's gonna be
- 45:18Speaker 4: a key step. Rubber meeting road in those joint practices,
- 45:21Speaker 4: then cuts, then practice up to the Green Bay game,
- 45:24Speaker 4: and then it's on. Man.
- 45:25Speaker 6: Yeah, let me ask you this. I've kind of been
- 45:31Speaker 6: all over the place in my feelings for JJ.
- 45:36Speaker 4: Which one we got three?
- 45:38Speaker 2: Well, there we go our quarterback.
- 45:41Speaker 6: Yeah, I thought the Vikings were a little enamor would
- 45:43Speaker 6: maybe drafting a national championship winning quarterback.
- 45:48Speaker 2: Yeah, for whatever that's worth. Yeah, but I just want
- 45:52Speaker 2: whoever's the best to be out there.
- 45:54Speaker 3: You know.
- 45:54Speaker 4: Well, I've seen this story and I don't know who
- 45:57Speaker 4: wrote it, and maybe it was speculation, and you know,
- 46:00Speaker 4: I don't need to overshare here. I am in the
- 46:02Speaker 4: camp that believes with the quarterbacks in that draft that
- 46:06Speaker 4: there may have been one that Kevin O'Connell really really
- 46:10Speaker 4: really really really really really liked. But either you know,
- 46:15Speaker 4: they couldn't. They couldn't if they tried to move, they
- 46:17Speaker 4: couldn't do it. So you know, then it comes down
- 46:20Speaker 4: to who made the McCarthy pick. And by the way,
- 46:24Speaker 4: when it comes to JJ, let's not get so lost
- 46:28Speaker 4: in the doom scrolling of social media that we forget
- 46:32Speaker 4: we went to Detroit over the last X amount of
- 46:35Speaker 4: years and never won, right Like, we'd go there and
- 46:38Speaker 4: jamieer Gibbs would ruin days in like five minutes. So
- 46:42Speaker 4: correct me if I'm wrong here, But I believe it
- 46:44Speaker 4: was JJ McCarthy who went there last year and beat him.
- 46:48Speaker 4: And they tell me the first game of the season
- 46:50Speaker 4: to get off to a fast start, it's kind of important.
- 46:53Speaker 4: They also tell me that Ben Johnson is a high
- 46:55Speaker 4: end coach, which he is, and I'm a fan from AFAR.
- 46:58Speaker 4: They also tell me it's tough to win a season
- 47:00Speaker 4: opener at Soldier Field, HM. As I recall, in his
- 47:04Speaker 4: very first start, there was a certain Michigan quarterback who
- 47:08Speaker 4: kind of won the game by himself in the fourth quarter. Okay, yeah, Paul.
- 47:12Speaker 4: But on the other side there was the Atlanta game
- 47:14Speaker 4: and and all this stuff prove just like so many
- 47:18Speaker 4: quarterbacks for the first ten starts of their careers. I
- 47:22Speaker 4: ain't done with jj H if he's not starting, and
- 47:26Speaker 4: I you know with Kyler there you know they're with
- 47:29Speaker 4: respect there. There is kind of an overarching take that
- 47:33Speaker 4: I've had with Kyler. When I talked to Nordo nine
- 47:35Speaker 4: to noon. Maybe some people on the side. What goes
- 47:39Speaker 4: into somebody indicating that we're gonna give you thirty whatever
- 47:47Speaker 4: million to leave? What goes into that? Well, I mean, honestly,
- 47:54Speaker 4: what goes in? Okay?
- 47:56Speaker 6: So?
- 47:56Speaker 3: Is that a.
- 47:58Speaker 4: The their right and the world's wrong, the world's what
- 48:02Speaker 4: is that? Okay?
- 48:03Speaker 2: So?
- 48:03Speaker 4: Or is it a look in the mere moment for
- 48:05Speaker 4: whomever right? Or is it a man. Whatever I got
- 48:09Speaker 4: the money, what is it? I don't know what it is.
- 48:12Speaker 4: We're gonna play games, and you know, I'm gonna talk
- 48:14Speaker 4: to people and I'll eventually figure out exactly what it is.
- 48:18Speaker 4: But none of that matters to me now that that
- 48:22Speaker 4: call of duty crap, some punt passes, the pick six
- 48:26Speaker 4: against the Rams, and the playoffs, the injuries, none of
- 48:30Speaker 4: that can matter to me anymore because there's nothing I
- 48:33Speaker 4: can do about it. All I can do is tell
- 48:35Speaker 4: you that this group here, O'Connell and the way, like
- 48:40Speaker 4: I said, at the end of twenty one, I was
- 48:42Speaker 4: done O'Connell, and that group came in and now I'm
- 48:45Speaker 4: so bit by those games. In twenty twenty two, I
- 48:47Speaker 4: had to be at every single practice. I fell in
- 48:50Speaker 4: love with it again. And I enjoy calling Minnesota Vikings
- 48:54Speaker 4: football games right now more than I ever have in
- 48:57Speaker 4: my life. And Kevin O'Connell and the ancillary group of
- 49:02Speaker 4: coaches and people, and Jeff Anderson and Sam Newton and
- 49:06Speaker 4: mediate relations John Extra and people that they have around
- 49:09Speaker 4: them that I've known for a long time has me
- 49:12Speaker 4: really engaged in the product. So with that said, when
- 49:19Speaker 4: it comes to Kyler, it's a blank slate, man. But
- 49:22Speaker 4: most of the pressures on who Kyler and why is
- 49:26Speaker 4: that because McCarthy showed us despite his limitations working with O'Connell,
- 49:33Speaker 4: Phillips and McCown. He can go to Ford Field and win.
- 49:37Speaker 4: He can go to Soldier Field and win. Okay, we
- 49:39Speaker 4: had all the Jefferson non catches and touchdown. Yes, I understand.
- 49:44Speaker 4: It's ten games. I also recall the turnaround of Sam
- 49:49Speaker 4: Darnold's career having a little to do with the O'Connell group.
- 49:53Speaker 4: I also recall getting victories out of Josh Dobbs, which
- 49:57Speaker 4: is not easy. I also recall Cousin twenty two going
- 50:01Speaker 4: lights out. So if you can't make it work for
- 50:05Speaker 4: this group here, that's why I'm like most of the
- 50:08Speaker 4: pressures on Kyler, we ain't them. With respect Arizona, this
- 50:13Speaker 4: group is not them. You're not going to play action
- 50:16Speaker 4: to de Mercado looking for some seventh round receiver down
- 50:19Speaker 4: the field. Nah, You're You're working with a former Coach
- 50:23Speaker 4: of the Year who is of the McVeigh tree and
- 50:27Speaker 4: has one of the best passing offensive concepts and schemes
- 50:31Speaker 4: of anybody in the NFL. And now you add what
- 50:34Speaker 4: they want to do with running and the addition of
- 50:36Speaker 4: Frank Smith and man, it's just I can't wait to
- 50:40Speaker 4: watch Kyler do what he's going to do whenever that
- 50:44Speaker 4: takes place in pressure moments. But I'm telling you right
- 50:47Speaker 4: now because they're not showing a lot of it. And
- 50:50Speaker 4: I've said this on my nine to noon show. When
- 50:53Speaker 4: they signed Kyler Murray, I watched twenty five of his
- 50:57Speaker 4: runs from Arizona on the All twenty two and with
- 51:00Speaker 4: respect to uh Robert or to RG three, okay, because
- 51:04Speaker 4: it's in that class. I have not seen anything as
- 51:08Speaker 4: breath taking a lean natural with legs since Mike Vig.
- 51:13Speaker 4: He is so good at it and so fast, and
- 51:16Speaker 4: now he slides and doesn't take people on like Baker Mayfield. It's, yeah,
- 51:20Speaker 4: we need him to pass to win, but when he runs,
- 51:25Speaker 4: it's it's gonna take your breath away. Man.
- 51:26Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, a whole different world. And speaking of running,
- 51:30Speaker 6: Aaron Jones and my X Factor mister Jordan Mason, who
- 51:36Speaker 6: I'm a big fan of, by the way, yeah you
- 51:38Speaker 6: get it, yeah, yees, seven hundred and fifty eight yards
- 51:41Speaker 6: last year. I'm gona excuse me, I'm looking at the
- 51:42Speaker 6: stats six touchdowns. Man, I am just I was just
- 51:47Speaker 6: very impressed when Jordan came in here. Man, I you know,
- 51:50Speaker 6: no fancy takeaways, the dude can just fall.
- 51:53Speaker 4: Well, no, they're actually I think they're supposed to be
- 51:55Speaker 4: a fancy takeaway here, Governor uh and we and we'll
- 51:59Speaker 4: watch the sea and see it develops. Mason has crafted
- 52:02Speaker 4: his body differently this year. I talked to him about
- 52:04Speaker 4: it the other day. I think he's a little faster,
- 52:07Speaker 4: but I think he recognized with this wide zone scheme
- 52:09Speaker 4: that they're going to start running with offensive linemen running
- 52:12Speaker 4: all over the field picking off bodies that when you
- 52:15Speaker 4: look at Jordan Mason with respect, like Jonathan Gannon, the
- 52:19Speaker 4: defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, if he looks
- 52:22Speaker 4: at at what Mason has done here, there, and everywhere,
- 52:26Speaker 4: he's going to see somebody who's really good between the
- 52:28Speaker 4: tackles and doesn't have a receiving touchdown. So I think
- 52:31Speaker 4: Jordan recognized that I got to craft my body in
- 52:35Speaker 4: a way where I can get outside the hash marks
- 52:37Speaker 4: and maybe even get outside the numbers and make the
- 52:39Speaker 4: right cut when it comes to catching it. You know,
- 52:42Speaker 4: we'll see if that's ever natural for him, but your
- 52:45Speaker 4: your wild card. There is a very important running back.
- 52:48Speaker 4: And then we get to demand Clayborn and I mean,
- 52:53Speaker 4: he's another one where I've seen some moments of training camp.
- 52:57Speaker 4: I'm like, holy cow, is he fast?
- 53:00Speaker 3: Uh?
- 53:00Speaker 4: But you know you're in the sixth round for a reason.
- 53:03Speaker 4: I don't exactly know all the reasons. But he know
- 53:06Speaker 4: he's got to get up to speed with the plays.
- 53:08Speaker 4: I would imagine, just like all the rookies because it's
- 53:11Speaker 4: so new, and just know what to do when the
- 53:13Speaker 4: pressure hits and hold on to the football. But if
- 53:16Speaker 4: they hit on that one with Claiborne and and and
- 53:19Speaker 4: then you got Mason looking like he's looking and Jones
- 53:22Speaker 4: is the crafty vet behind this heat seeking missile known
- 53:26Speaker 4: as Max Bredeson with Juwan Jennings picking off linebackers in safeties. Yes,
- 53:31Speaker 4: I'm all in on that.
- 53:32Speaker 6: All right again, if we're with the legend Paul Allen
- 53:36Speaker 6: here on the Sports Done Right podcast, Vince Wright, sports
- 53:39Speaker 6: governor here, and before we jump over to the defensive
- 53:42Speaker 6: side of the ball, because you know, Paul, we could
- 53:45Speaker 6: be here all night.
- 53:46Speaker 3: Man.
- 53:46Speaker 4: I mean, I guess this is fun.
- 53:48Speaker 2: I enjoy this. Let me ask you this.
- 53:54Speaker 6: Mister Van Ginko. I mean, I am just again one
- 53:59Speaker 6: of these dudes. It just came over here, won my heart.
- 54:03Speaker 6: I mean one of my family. I mean too, you know,
- 54:06Speaker 6: I mean I just love the way he just balls
- 54:09Speaker 6: out that, you know, game after game after game.
- 54:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 54:12Speaker 2: And you know, so if you could give me your
- 54:14Speaker 2: thoughts on him real quick.
- 54:16Speaker 4: Uh, he is becoming one of my all time favorite
- 54:19Speaker 4: vikings in all the years that I've called games. And
- 54:22Speaker 4: here's why. His dedication to his faith and to the
- 54:27Speaker 4: gospel and chapels on the road that I get at
- 54:31Speaker 4: the opportunity to do sometimes. You know, my relationship with
- 54:35Speaker 4: Andrew developed via sideline prayer and chapels on the road
- 54:40Speaker 4: nights before games. Wow. And I wouldn't say that if,
- 54:43Speaker 4: like if if Van Ginkole was watching, then I'd wanted
- 54:46Speaker 4: to corroborate wholeheartedly. So the fact that God started our
- 54:51Speaker 4: relationship that way means a lot to me. Now I'm
- 54:54Speaker 4: not watching him a lot with the Miami Dolphins. When
- 54:57Speaker 4: when he jumped that Daniel Jones were out and got
- 54:59Speaker 4: into the end zone, I knew we were onto something.
- 55:01Speaker 4: He's smart, he hits hard, he's fast. That neck injury
- 55:06Speaker 4: last year, I think mess things up for him. Yeah,
- 55:09Speaker 4: maybe when he came back. It's a neck, man, and
- 55:11Speaker 4: you got the rest of your life to live. But
- 55:13Speaker 4: he's he's one of the I don't know, three to
- 55:16Speaker 4: five most important players on this team this year with
- 55:19Speaker 4: Grenard gone, because he's you know, I'd be surprised if
- 55:22Speaker 4: he doesn't get the majority of the attention to start,
- 55:25Speaker 4: which means Dallas Turner needs to get off blocks and
- 55:29Speaker 4: beat his guy with that amazing athletic ability has Uh.
- 55:34Speaker 4: And then you get Banks and Citrus and Levi Drake
- 55:36Speaker 4: Rodriguez and Jalen Redman and ty Ingram Dawkins. Inside, well,
- 55:41Speaker 4: they believe their interior pass rush is gonna be a
- 55:44Speaker 4: lot better than it was with hard Graven Allen, and
- 55:47Speaker 4: it's gonna be as good, maybe as they've had here
- 55:49Speaker 4: in a long time. All of that has to mesh together.
- 55:53Speaker 4: But Andrew, you know, Andrew's kind of on the quiet side.
- 55:56Speaker 3: Uh.
- 55:56Speaker 4: He's a bona fide team leader, leads by example, lead
- 56:00Speaker 4: by leads by subtle conversations and subtlety. So I love Andrew,
- 56:05Speaker 4: and I stick by what I said. He's quickly becoming
- 56:08Speaker 4: one of the all time favorite people and players with
- 56:12Speaker 4: whom I've worked in all my years doing what I do.
- 56:15Speaker 2: Wow, very very big praise.
- 56:16Speaker 6: And you know you spoke of Caleb Banks here, the
- 56:19Speaker 6: big pick there, So let's let's talk about him because
- 56:21Speaker 6: he's been impressing it. Yeah, everybody, it sounds like out
- 56:24Speaker 6: there and yeah, god willing. I mean, you know, we
- 56:27Speaker 6: can stay away from the foot and the injuries and whatnot.
- 56:30Speaker 6: Bakings may have gotten a little diamond.
- 56:32Speaker 4: In the rough here. You know, I'm curious. I'm curious
- 56:36Speaker 4: to see how much they're gonna play him. Are they
- 56:38Speaker 4: gonna play him in the Giants game? I don't know.
- 56:40Speaker 4: I mean, if you think he's good, to go, play
- 56:42Speaker 4: him because he needs all those reps he can get,
- 56:45Speaker 4: But like, like, how much is he going to play
- 56:49Speaker 4: to start the season because you think about him being
- 56:52Speaker 4: a rookie. Jakobe Thomas is a rookie. He runs with
- 56:54Speaker 4: the ones a lot. Jake Golday may not run with
- 56:57Speaker 4: the ones a lot, but he's getting work inside outside.
- 57:01Speaker 4: Dominique Orange is I mean, he played a ton at
- 57:05Speaker 4: Iowa State and I think he's going to play a
- 57:07Speaker 4: fair amount here. So how many rookies can on which
- 57:12Speaker 4: can you know why, you know, for how long. So
- 57:15Speaker 4: I'm curious to see how much Caleb is gonna play.
- 57:18Speaker 4: But when he does play, you know, I went the
- 57:21Speaker 4: first day in pads Man and I'm not the first
- 57:23Speaker 4: to say this, I would imagine, but you know, I'm
- 57:26Speaker 4: looking through the binoculars from the exclusive Vikings radio network
- 57:29Speaker 4: person rising numbers, and I caught ninety five and I
- 57:34Speaker 4: had to go to my phone and see what a
- 57:35Speaker 4: team Hicks eyes look like because the former bear because
- 57:39Speaker 4: Caleb just moved like him. But I thought he was
- 57:42Speaker 4: quicker and faster, but he's not as big as a team.
- 57:45Speaker 4: So I love Caleb. I think they really really really
- 57:48Speaker 4: hit on one. I'm not tripping over the foot because
- 57:51Speaker 4: they're not tripping over the foot, and that's pretty much
- 57:55Speaker 4: in on ninety five.
- 57:56Speaker 3: There you go.
- 57:57Speaker 6: All right, let me ask you this. The vice Viking's
- 58:00Speaker 6: coaching staff koc big fan. You know, Vikings fans love him.
- 58:07Speaker 4: I like that.
- 58:08Speaker 6: You know when he got here as a younger guy
- 58:09Speaker 6: as well. You know, I was a little bit different
- 58:11Speaker 6: for most of the Vikings coaches, so that was real nice.
- 58:15Speaker 6: You obviously you talk with them a lot if you
- 58:19Speaker 6: could just you know, don't pull the curtain all the
- 58:21Speaker 6: way back, but just if you can give us a
- 58:23Speaker 6: little little sneak peek there on our head coach there,
- 58:25Speaker 6: because he seems like a very cool.
- 58:27Speaker 4: Dude, phenomenal father, because you know his wife, Leah is
- 58:34Speaker 4: an excellent, excellent human being who is an MVP mom.
- 58:39Speaker 4: And you got to be when these coaches are working
- 58:41Speaker 4: away from home as much as they are. Yes, And
- 58:44Speaker 4: I just know from all the the to the side
- 58:47Speaker 4: conversations outside of football that I've had with Kevin is
- 58:50Speaker 4: there's nothing that matters more to Kevin O'Connell than his
- 58:54Speaker 4: children and his wife. That's admirable. So now when it
- 58:58Speaker 4: gets to football, he puts a lot of time into it.
- 59:02Speaker 4: He's very, very very smart.
- 59:05Speaker 3: Uh.
- 59:05Speaker 4: Collaboration is and culture are overused in trite terms in
- 59:10Speaker 4: some people's lives, but certainly in sports, but it's it
- 59:15Speaker 4: really the spirit returned to the building in twenty twenty two.
- 59:18Speaker 4: And to have that, other people's ideas have to matter.
- 59:22Speaker 4: So I've never known Kevin to bang on the table
- 59:25Speaker 4: and be like my way or the highway. He might
- 59:28Speaker 4: even have control to be that, he might even have
- 59:30Speaker 4: the power to be that guy. So He's a naturally collaborative,
- 59:34Speaker 4: culture first kind of guy. He you know, I don't
- 59:39Speaker 4: I don't see him behind the scenes in some of
- 59:41Speaker 4: his toughest moments after some like you know, say, after
- 59:44Speaker 4: you get shut out by Seattle or some of some
- 59:46Speaker 4: of the other moments.
- 59:47Speaker 3: Uh.
- 59:47Speaker 4: But you know, I said on a radio show maybe
- 59:51Speaker 4: a few years ago, the Minnesota Vikings are going to
- 59:54Speaker 4: win a Super Bowl with Kevin O'Connell, and I believe that.
- 59:58Speaker 4: And how would I know what a super Bowl winning
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: coach looks like? All right, well, I love North Turner
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: and he won as an offensive coordinator. Zimmer is a
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: DB's coach, one of my all time favorites, Leslie Frasier.
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: He's won multiple Super Bowls. So I kind of know
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: what goes into it from a nuance under the radar
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: standpoint outside of you know, you you you can't find
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: a quarterback, or you don't run it off, or you
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: don't run it off in the red zone, or or
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: you know, like Kevin joked about the other day with
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: Barrera word salads and things like that. I just I've
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: been taught over the course of time some of the
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: authentic subtleties and trustworthy nature of people who win at
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: the highest level, and Kevin is that we just haven't
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: gotten their shoot. I mean, he hasn't won a playoff game.
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: They want to playoff. We gotta want a playoff game
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: this year. Okay, with respect to somebody, I really really
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: admire and respect Kevin in the ultimate team game of football. So,
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: I mean, k can do it perfectly, but if so
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: and so messes up, then he gets sacked by ten,
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: you know, right, So a lot of it goes into
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: it that way, Vince. But I have a high level
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: of belief in Kevin. Uh And we're we're very direct
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: with each other about things when we talk about non
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: football things. So I hope he's coaching the Minnesota Vikings
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: for the rest of the time that I call the games.
- 1:01:21Speaker 6: All right, A couple last questions here with PA, because
- 1:01:24Speaker 6: we're coming up on the hour mark, and I want
- 1:01:26Speaker 6: to give a PA sometime on a Friday night.
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: I'm good, man, I can do this all night. You
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: do it wonderful.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: I appreciate it. But don't don't say that. Don't say that.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: All right, here we go, my man. Some of the
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: calls you have made are legendary.
- 1:01:41Speaker 6: Obviously I was gonna try as I recorded him on
- 1:01:44Speaker 6: my little phone app here, but I don't think the
- 1:01:46Speaker 6: audio may sound good if I played them. But right, yeah, exactly,
- 1:01:50Speaker 6: you know what we're talking about, man, I mean, what
- 1:01:54Speaker 6: is it like? Because I know people got to come
- 1:01:56Speaker 6: up to you all the time and talk to these calls,
- 1:01:58Speaker 6: the Arizona, the no Oh, and you know, I mean
- 1:02:02Speaker 6: the wide leftover in TCF Bank with the Seahawks, obviously,
- 1:02:07Speaker 6: the Minneapolis miracle.
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: On and on and on it goes.
- 1:02:12Speaker 6: What is that like for UPA when people come up
- 1:02:15Speaker 6: to you and talk about these calls and you know,
- 1:02:18Speaker 6: talk about the emotion behind them, Because I think that's
- 1:02:21Speaker 6: the thing too. You know, I've seen some you know,
- 1:02:23Speaker 6: some of the interviews and you talk about that just
- 1:02:26Speaker 6: not only being the family, just that real emotion that
- 1:02:29Speaker 6: comes out in your play calling.
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: Well, it's an honor when people want to talk about
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: anything that God has chosen I get to do professionally.
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: And that's the only way I look at it. The
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: fact that I don't write things down like Minneapolis miracle
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: or no No, the Cardinals, the vikings out of the playoffs,
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: or you know, you can take a knee and try
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: a fifty five yard whatever. I don't write any of
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: that down. So I you know, I pray lot and
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: I give thanks to God a lot that he has
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: chosen I get to do these jobs, and in some
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: of these moments, He has put me on the perfect
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: words right that seem to have stood the test of time.
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: Now in fairness, in twenty twenty one, game was on
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: the line at Arizona and I completely blew the Greg
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: Joseph call. And then you know, like I get to
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: the team bus and the team lost the game and stuff,
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: and I got people players and people coming up to
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: me being are you see this on barstool? You see
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: this here? And I mean it's like there were big, big, big,
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: big sites that will put clown nose on me and
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: be like, who's this guy? He sucks again. It gets
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: to the hey, Paul, what's changed over thirty years. Got
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: to be loud, got to come at it hard and
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: dunk on somebody for you to think that you've won.
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: And I know I've already won because I'm going to
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: heaven per the Gospel of Jesus Christ. But others try
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: to win different ways. So I mean, of course it
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: gets to me a little bit, But you know what,
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: I don't trip out over it because I just wait
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: for the next year. And then all of a sudden
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: we're at Buffalo and a bunch of big calls there
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: that ended up working out the right way. And certain
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: giant people call me national treasure. I'm not a national treasure.
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: And I'm also not a clown knows that a big
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: website online. So always keeping in mind that I serve you,
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: and whether I've known the Bible and studied it or not,
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: that has been That has been baseline for me all
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: of my career. That governor and X amount of people
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: have to make the conscious choice to put the game on.
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: Now they're there for the team, or they're there for
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: fantasy football, or they're there for their best. But I've
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: been part of it for a long time, and so
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: people they I. I serve the listener with hopefully entertainment, humor,
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: some color, some unique descriptions, and you like it. And
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: you know what, in a roundabout way, it gives you
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: a distraction in your lives where maybe things ain't great
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: at home, or maybe things ain't great at work, and
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: you put on a Vikings game and Paul made you smile.
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: So that's the number one thing that resonates with me.
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: With the amount of people who have listened to me
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: call games or do Kpean shows or come to Catebury
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: over the years, that's number that's first and foremost. What
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: resonates with me is what a blessing it is with
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: no college experience, auditioning for every single one of these jobs,
- 1:05:55Speaker 4: and God shose I would win them all and then
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: hold them all, and a lot goes into that.
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: Man.
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: Like I said, you know, there are times that I've
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: filled my metaphorical pockets, but I've emptied my soul. Wow,
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: And there are regrets, But I don't second guess what
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: God's plan has been for me, because I just don't.
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: So that's the only way to answer it. Whether it's
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: a big call, whether it's a blown call, or whether
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: it's a two yard xav or Scott run against the
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: New York Giants, it's fantastic. And I just can't thank
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: people enough for believing in me and following me and
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: uh finding joy in my football calls. It means the
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: world to me.
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: Okay, now let me ask you this.
- 1:06:39Speaker 6: And again, just a couple questions, so I'll Paul be
- 1:06:42Speaker 6: with us for a couple more minutes are in the
- 1:06:43Speaker 6: Sports Don't Right podcasts. I you know, when the call
- 1:06:47Speaker 6: was made in that Arizona game, I was watching, you know,
- 1:06:50Speaker 6: we were actually you saw me watching a little bit
- 1:06:52Speaker 6: of a YouTube video before we jumped on here, and you.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: Were talking about the former owner, Red McCall holmes was
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: not a fan of that call. Can you share that
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: story and kind of the backdrop there and how he
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: kind of came after you?
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: You know, well, it was my second year. It was
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: the end of my second year, and again I auditioned
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: to become a play by play voice in the NFL
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: and won the job, one of thirty two, held it
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: for twenty five years, So may God rest the soul
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: of Red Maccombs. At the end of my first year,
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: a couple of vice presidents met with me and right
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: a week in front of the first game at renovated
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: Lambeau against the Green Bay Packers where the Vikings would win.
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: They you know, Red Maccombs had them sit down with
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: me into the three and say, Red didn't think you
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: improved during the course of the year. Okay, all right.
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: Scared the bleep out of me, as you can imagine, yeah,
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: because I really loved doing the job and O two
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: and man, it was fun. But that was one thing
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: about Red, as he had a way of pushing people
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: at certain times to bring the best out in them.
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: All Right, So now I call the three season, well,
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: the last play was that McCown to Nathan Poole, and
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: that's it. I got word from somebody, and I believe
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: it's mostly accurate. Even though Red mccomb's right hand man,
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: Chad Ostlin, who's a friend of mine, told me that,
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: you know, Red didn't have a problem with the call,
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: That's not what I heard shortly after the season from
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: people who would know. In fact, somebody told me he
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: hated the call, and I like kind of had to
- 1:08:33Speaker 4: wait the whole offseason, like man into the three bosses,
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: like you're not improving and you have no college experience
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: and what's happening here? And then then I get intel
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: that he hated the call, and like, nobody's talking to
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: me about it, so I'm just sitting back wondering what
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: is happening. So then I headed into the four season,
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: and clearly, you know, he felt I was improving. Then
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: he sold the team to the wolfs and and and
- 1:09:00Speaker 4: uh so that that's the story behind me the O three.
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: But yeah, Rehet Rhett kept me and several other people
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: on our toes all the time, specifically if we were new, inexperienced,
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: and young.
- 1:09:15Speaker 6: Okay, all right, a couple of goofy questions, then I
- 1:09:20Speaker 6: got one to get you out of here on PA.
- 1:09:22Speaker 6: But you've known so many Vikings over the years. Who
- 1:09:26Speaker 6: I mean, not that you can maybe pick out one,
- 1:09:29Speaker 6: but who's the coolest Viking?
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: Who is just just you know, this dude is just chill.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: He's cool, you know what I'm saying. Man, Just or
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: give me a couple. I mean, you know, maybe just
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: say one.
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: But well, my co worker in calling games now and
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: also Thursday's nine to noon, Ben Leber, Uh, Ben has
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: a massive heart, was very good at what he did.
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: Uh didn't know him as well when he played as
- 1:09:58Speaker 4: I do now. Uh, but Ben Assault of the Earth,
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: and he just has God just gifted him with the
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: cool gene. He's just a cool guy. So you know,
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: I'm I'm really glad that Ben and I are friends.
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: I'm just gonna we we love each other, man, and
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: we help each other broadcasting Wise.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: He'd be up there.
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: When you say it the way you said it, like
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: cool and chill and but good at what they do.
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: Antoine Winfield needs to be up there. Uh, one of
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: the smartest, sharpest, sly, coy, calculated. Man. I love Antoine,
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: so he's in there. Corey Chavis is another one. Corey
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: is one of the smartest not only football players, but
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: people that I've ever met in my life. So those
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: three come to mind now. When Brett was here in
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: O nine, I didn't get to know Brett that well.
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: But given they they you know, they let me, They've
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: let me for a long time watch practice in non
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: media hours because they know they can trust me. It's
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: watching Brett practice almost ruined it for me. With all
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: quarterbacks to come after him. You just saw things with
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: Brett where he was like, holy cow, wow, he was
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: just different. Cousins was super good and and and you
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: know there have been some quarterbacks over the years who
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: have been good, but man, just Brett. I don't want
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: to say he had like Captain cool to him, but
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: he man, he was man. Brett. Brett was the bomb
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: with pushing the envelope to a certain extent, taking chances
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: and what a what an aura h O f hade.
- 1:11:34Speaker 6: All right, last question here will get you out of
- 1:11:37Speaker 6: here before that sun starts attacking you again.
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: There through the shades.
- 1:11:40Speaker 6: We're good after it'saul said and done, Pa, because you know,
- 1:11:44Speaker 6: obviously you've you've had you know, thirty plus years and
- 1:11:48Speaker 6: doing what you're doing in a couple of different fields.
- 1:11:51Speaker 6: Your faith, which is you know, obviously key to your life.
- 1:11:55Speaker 6: You know, after it's all said and done, what would
- 1:11:58Speaker 6: you want people to remember.
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: About My identity is not in calling justin Jefferson touchdowns,
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: thrilling finishes at Canterbury Park, or doing radio shows a
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: kfan that moved the people meter one hundred to one hundred.
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: My identity, for those who truly know me and love me,
- 1:12:21Speaker 4: is rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, recognizing God
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: didn't have to choose that I get to do these jobs,
- 1:12:29Speaker 4: but he did. Now I'm divorced. I wouldn't wish divorce
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: on my worst enemy. That was part of my story too.
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: Why he permitted it didn't make as much sense to
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: me x amount of years ago as as maybe it
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: does now. But I'm it's these platforms and microphones given
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: to me have been given to me to share with
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: people why I believe in the Bible, why I believe
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: salvation and eternity only are found through the Gospel of
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: Jesus Christ. That's my identity. I'll go to the grave
- 1:13:04Speaker 4: with it. I pine for opportunities to share. I do
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: a lot of speaking about this, more so than people. Noakes,
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: and I'll talk a lot about it myself and two
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: others run a chapel at Canterbury Park and Shakapi, and
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: I've done that for about five years. I don't talk
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: a lot about that. I'm not big social media guy.
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: So just because I'm not talking about it doesn't mean
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: it's happening. And finally, it gets back to the fourth reference. Now,
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: from what you said about forty five minutes ago, what
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: has changed most in thirty years. It is what those
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: think it takes to win, and winning the battle is
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: different than winning the war. And when somebody asked me
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: how I'm doing, I don't answer it like this all
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: the time because it takes too long, and for some
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: people it's just they just don't want to hear it.
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: But how you doing, Paul? Actually I'm elite because i
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: know I'm going to heaven and yeah, I know I've
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: send X amount of times today too, but I know
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: the Bible teaches this. So I'm elite because I know
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: I'm going to heaven. But there are probably some details
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: in my life that need improvement and need repentance, and
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: you know, got to stop doing this and think about
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: this and everything. But the Paul Allen's identity is rooted
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and taking what God
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: has chosen to give me with followers, platforms, microphones, knowledge
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: and everything and sharing it with others, whether they believe
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: in it or not.
- 1:14:33Speaker 6: Hey man, Paul, PA, I appreciate you taking the time tonight.
- 1:14:38Speaker 6: I appreciate the honesty. And that's exactly why I wanted.
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: To have you on man, because thanks for asking that
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: question matter.
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: Hey one hundred, and that's what you are, Pa.
- 1:14:47Speaker 6: You are one hundred and that's why I am so
- 1:14:50Speaker 6: honored that you took time on a Friday night coming
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: back from training camp.
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: You're the governor.
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: Hey, Hey, I'm the governor.
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: I I'm my favorite governor in the state.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: There you go, up, go I like that.
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: Oh wait, wait, wait, okay, all right three two? Uh,
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: You're one of my favorite governors in the state because
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: I want to be able to open my Twitter feed
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: this weekend.
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: Yeah you know that's going on Twitter right here.
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: People can't contextually look at things like that. Then go
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: on with your duncan selves and win the battle. But
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: find a way to win the war. There you go,
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: ladies and gentlemen. You know him, hey, you know him,
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: you love him. I thank him for taking time.
- 1:15:28Speaker 6: Paul Allen, PA, thank you, my friend for joining us

- 1:15:46Speaker 6: on everything Vikings, Canterbury and horse racing, his deep faith,
