Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Take a Second To Breathe Where You Are
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily Body coming to you from Hawaii right now. Actually,
- 0:26Speaker 1: as you listen to this, I will be on my
- 0:29Speaker 1: second of two planes heading back to New York. But
- 0:33Speaker 1: I'm recording this on Thursday, and I am sitting inside
- 0:39Speaker 1: Sense Lunai, which is a resort arguably one of the
- 0:44Speaker 1: most beautiful wellness retreats in the world. And they have
- 0:50Speaker 1: a partnership with Whoop, which is why I'm down here.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I am going through the experience to write about it
- 0:57Speaker 1: on Whoops blog called the Locker. I have reference to
- 0:59Speaker 1: it before in the Weekly Hurdle newsletter. The partnership the
- 1:04Speaker 1: program is called the Optimal well Being Program and basically
- 1:07Speaker 1: guests can meet with an integrated team of wellness individuals
- 1:13Speaker 1: from the person that they call your Sunday Guide, two
- 1:16Speaker 1: different wellness practitioners, nutritionists, exercise physiologists, and mindfulness coaches, all
- 1:22Speaker 1: talking to you about your biomarkers, which are if you're
- 1:26Speaker 1: a Whoop user, you know this tracked by your Whoop
- 1:29Speaker 1: wearable and learn about what's going on with your body.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Find junior daily practices and activities. You've got a fully
- 1:36Speaker 1: customized itinerary. Yeah, it's like the whole nine yards and
- 1:40Speaker 1: so it's been a really beautiful week. Definitely not your
- 1:43Speaker 1: traditional YI vacation where you're just lounging on a lounge chair,
- 1:49Speaker 1: a beach chair, dipping your toes in the ocean, although
- 1:52Speaker 1: I did get to do that yesterday. Feeling so grateful
- 1:56Speaker 1: that I got to do this, and it's been really, really,
- 2:00Speaker 1: really interesting, and I will share my takeaways over in
- 2:02Speaker 1: the locker. I'll make sure to share that post with
- 2:05Speaker 1: you in the Weekly Hurdle when it's live. I digress.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I would be remiss if I didn't say that it
- 2:13Speaker 1: certainly has been a heavy week, and that was why
- 2:17Speaker 1: I made the decision not to release an episode of
- 2:20Speaker 1: the show on Wednesday. It just felt kind of trivial
- 2:23Speaker 1: in the wake of what happened in Texas to release
- 2:27Speaker 1: a listener Questions episode when I would hope that the
- 2:30Speaker 1: content that you are taking in is you know, related
- 2:33Speaker 1: to the news and maybe geared toward your mental health
- 2:37Speaker 1: and well being and navigating what has been an unimaginable
- 2:42Speaker 1: event for the families and the loved ones involved. I'm
- 2:48Speaker 1: at a loss for words, but also just so traumatic
- 2:52Speaker 1: and angry, anger inducing. Excuse me for so many of
- 2:57Speaker 1: us seeing the faces of those children the teachers just killed.
- 3:05Speaker 1: It's truly awful. So, like you, I've been reflecting a bit,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and I wrote an email to Chuck Schumer, my senator, yesterday.
- 3:15Speaker 1: I'll link in the show notes on how you can
- 3:18Speaker 1: reach out to your senator to take action. I also
- 3:23Speaker 1: donated to every Town, and I'll link to that as
- 3:27Speaker 1: well for those of you that are not in the loop.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Every Town is a movement. They call it. It's Moms, Mayors, Survivors, Students,
- 3:35Speaker 1: Everyday Americans, and they're working to end gun violence. I
- 3:39Speaker 1: linked to the fundraiser in my Instagram bio, but I'll
- 3:44Speaker 1: also link it in the show notes as well. But
- 3:47Speaker 1: beyond this, I've just been reflecting and I was in
- 3:51Speaker 1: a yoga class yesterday morning and something that the teacher
- 3:55Speaker 1: said really stuck with me that I wanted to share
- 3:58Speaker 1: with you here today, and that is breathe where you are.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I've said before to be where your feet are on
- 4:07Speaker 1: this show, but this week the sentence breathe where you
- 4:13Speaker 1: are really really stuck with me, because sometimes that's all
- 4:21Speaker 1: we can do right It's a fact. Wherever you are
- 4:26Speaker 1: right now is where you are, even if you want
- 4:31Speaker 1: to be somewhere else if you hope that your circumstance
- 4:35Speaker 1: was different. God knows, we all wish that what happened
- 4:39Speaker 1: in Texas didn't happen, But this is how it is now.
- 4:44Speaker 1: So what if you took a second to pause, and
- 4:49Speaker 1: took a second to breathe one deep inhale and one
- 4:56Speaker 1: deep exhale, and you allowed yourself to to meet yourself
- 5:01Speaker 1: with where you're at, so that you could have a
- 5:06Speaker 1: second to process before taking your next step. It's not
- 5:12Speaker 1: always easy, and sometimes it can feel like we're suffocating
- 5:15Speaker 1: and that breath isn't readily available. But when you take
- 5:19Speaker 1: the time just to accept, there's so much power in
- 5:24Speaker 1: that right to allow yourself to truly feel your feelings
- 5:29Speaker 1: and to just be without an immediate urgency to take action.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Although yes, action is important, I cannot reiterate that enough.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Nothing changes if nothing changes. But sometimes before you get
- 5:46Speaker 1: to that point, before you figure out your next step,
- 5:50Speaker 1: you just need to sit in what is for just
- 5:53Speaker 1: a second and breathe where you are. And so that
- 5:56Speaker 1: really really resonated with me, and it felt appropriate to
- 6:00Speaker 1: bring to you all this week. My prompt for you
- 6:03Speaker 1: this week is not a prompt at all, but rather
- 6:06Speaker 1: an encouragement to take a couple of deep breaths, to
- 6:10Speaker 1: do what you need to do, to have some grace
- 6:12Speaker 1: with others, and show up the best way that you
- 6:16Speaker 1: can and accept that some days that is going to
- 6:19Speaker 1: look different than it did the day before, and that
- 6:22Speaker 1: is okay. And for now, a little lighthearted listener question. Hey, Emily,
- 6:30Speaker 1: It's Lauren from Loisbill. I have a really important question
- 6:33Speaker 1: for you. What's your favorite kind of donut? Hey, Laura,
- 6:38Speaker 1: I will. I do feel like I need to preface
- 6:41Speaker 1: that this question came in last week, I believe, and
- 6:44Speaker 1: it is a very pressing question. I may or may
- 6:47Speaker 1: not have talked about this on the show before. I'm
- 6:49Speaker 1: pretty sure that I have. But in college when I
- 6:52Speaker 1: was going through a really big transition and losing weight,
- 6:56Speaker 1: I was doing so with the help of weight watchers
- 6:59Speaker 1: at the time now UW. Every week when I would
- 7:02Speaker 1: go to weigh in. After I would weigh in, I
- 7:05Speaker 1: would go to a Dunkin Donuts that was literally like
- 7:09Speaker 1: two buildings over and I would go through the drive
- 7:13Speaker 1: through and get an iced coffee and a glazed stick donut.
- 7:17Speaker 1: I know it's unconventional. I know it's a stick shape
- 7:20Speaker 1: and not a circle. But that donut to this day
- 7:25Speaker 1: brings me so much nostalgia and happiness, which is just
- 7:29Speaker 1: really nice. Also, I do need to say I don't discriminate,
- 7:33Speaker 1: but I am a cake donut over a yeast donut
- 7:37Speaker 1: kind of person, especially the cake donuts. If you go
- 7:41Speaker 1: to like a very legit donut shop aka like Peter
- 7:45Speaker 1: Pam and Greenpoint amazing donuts. The old fashioned donuts that
- 7:49Speaker 1: are sometimes like glazed and just like dense. Oh those
- 7:54Speaker 1: are my jam. So yeah, I told you a little
- 7:59Speaker 1: less serious topic for listener question this week. Make sure
- 8:02Speaker 1: to do what you need to do for you have
- 8:03Speaker 1: some grace with yourself. Donate to every town if you
- 8:06Speaker 1: have the funds. A note on what's going on with hurdle.
- 8:09Speaker 1: So next week is a special series on the show
- 8:12Speaker 1: Wow Say the Words special series five times Fast called
- 8:16Speaker 1: Running Through. I'm talking to different women about their journey
- 8:21Speaker 1: with running and how it has helped them navigate some
- 8:24Speaker 1: of their major hurdles. I'm really excited about the series
- 8:29Speaker 1: and to bring it to you, it is in celebration. Wednesday,
- 8:32Speaker 1: June first is Global Running Day and so it is
- 8:35Speaker 1: the perfect time to bring you this content. Plus it's
- 8:39Speaker 1: five days of episodes, which will leave you with plenty
- 8:41Speaker 1: of content because the following week the show will be
- 8:45Speaker 1: on a season break. So that is what's going on
- 8:49Speaker 1: from a production schedule. POV over here on Hurdle and
- 8:54Speaker 1: like I said, make sure to take care of you
- 8:56Speaker 1: all right, another Hurdle conquer Catch you guys next time.
