Latest / Cardinal Territory: A St. Louis Cardinals Podcast / Cardinals swept by D-backs to open second half
Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Well, the second half started across Major League Baseball, but
- 0:09Speaker 1: I think someone forgot to tell the Saint Louis Cardinals
- 0:11Speaker 1: because it was a pretty ugly start to the unofficial
- 0:16Speaker 1: second half. Out at Chase Field and Phoenix, Arizona. The
- 0:19Speaker 1: Cardinals were swept by the Diamondbacks. All three games, pretty uncompetitive,
- 0:24Speaker 1: and it just made for a very sour taste to
- 0:26Speaker 1: start what should have been I think the Cardinals' most
- 0:30Speaker 1: competitive part of the season, given the fact that they
- 0:32Speaker 1: are competing for their trade deadline direction, but did.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Not go well.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Welcome back again to Cardinals territory, Katie and Bernie michlss
- 0:39Speaker 1: Here Bertie, your takeaway. Obviously I was not at Chase Field,
- 0:43Speaker 1: and I'm sorry in advance for my voice happy All
- 0:46Speaker 1: Star break to me. Caught the flu, so trying to
- 0:50Speaker 1: stay on the mend here. I'll try not to talk
- 0:52Speaker 1: a lot because this sounds terrible. Bertie, you can go
- 0:55Speaker 1: ahead and sound off on what I thought was just
- 0:56Speaker 1: a completely embarrassing performance by the course.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Well, it was embarrassing on so many levels. Like you mentioned,
- 1:01Speaker 2: you know, there was non competitive you know, the Cardinals
- 1:04Speaker 2: just you know, basically the first three innings if you
- 1:08Speaker 2: add up to score like the first three innings of
- 1:11Speaker 2: all three games. I mean they were outscored like sixteen
- 1:13Speaker 2: to nothing in the first three innings. And you know,
- 1:16Speaker 2: the starting pitching was horrendous with Polonte and Gray and Michaelis.
- 1:22Speaker 2: They had a thirteen zero point five ORA in the
- 1:25Speaker 2: series and none of them got passed, none of them
- 1:28Speaker 2: through five innings. But I don't want to blame everything
- 1:31Speaker 2: on the starting pitching, as bad as it was, because
- 1:33Speaker 2: the hitters came out flat, got nothing done. The team
- 1:38Speaker 2: really didn't put up much of a fight. And listen,
- 1:40Speaker 2: yet you and I and many others have complimented and
- 1:44Speaker 2: praised this team for, you know, their spirit, their energy
- 1:48Speaker 2: where nothing seems to get them down, they're going to
- 1:50Speaker 2: keep coming at you. And I have to start to
- 1:52Speaker 2: reassess that because Katie, here's the thing that bothered me
- 1:56Speaker 2: about it, other than the fact that you know, they
- 1:58Speaker 2: lost those three games, and like you said, they really
- 2:01Speaker 2: forget the final score Sunday, that was not a competitive game.
- 2:06Speaker 2: But here's a team that has been having all kinds
- 2:09Speaker 2: of problems, right, all kinds of problems, and they lost
- 2:12Speaker 2: eight out of their final twelve games going into the break,
- 2:15Speaker 2: but yet you look at the standings and they're still
- 2:17Speaker 2: right there. So if I'm a member of the Cardinals
- 2:21Speaker 2: baseball family, whether you know, the coach, manager, players, whatever,
- 2:25Speaker 2: I'd be like, you know what, yeah, we kind of
- 2:29Speaker 2: use to use a horse racing term. We kind of
- 2:31Speaker 2: threw a shoe there towards the end. We really really
- 2:34Speaker 2: played poorly, but guys were still in it. We're still
- 2:38Speaker 2: right there, so let's go. Let's go. And I really
- 2:42Speaker 2: thought they'd come out, they'd come out, and you know,
- 2:44Speaker 2: because we heard so much about how tired they are.
- 2:46Speaker 2: The guys are banged up, and I'm sorry, Ali Marmel,
- 2:49Speaker 2: but all thirty teams are banged up. Okay, you know,
- 2:52Speaker 2: I don't think people want to hear that, even if
- 2:54Speaker 2: there's truth to that, because it applies to every team.
- 2:57Speaker 2: But I really, man, I would have lost a lot
- 3:00Speaker 2: of money if I would say, you know, I'll bet
- 3:01Speaker 2: you a hundred bucks, they're gonna come out flying, They're
- 3:03Speaker 2: gonna come out throwing punches, so to speak. They were
- 3:06Speaker 2: totally flat. There was no urgency, there was no energy.
- 3:12Speaker 2: They just flat lined. And I don't understand, like, where
- 3:15Speaker 2: did that team go that you and I were saying, Gosh,
- 3:18Speaker 2: team's fun to watch, guys, they're entertaining, Gosh, they get
- 3:21Speaker 2: after it, Gosh they're resilient. Well, what the heck happened
- 3:24Speaker 2: to that team during the All Star break? Did they?
- 3:27Speaker 2: What happened? I mean, they had four days to rest.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Other than brettan donnovan, they had four days to rest.
- 3:33Speaker 2: They should have came out just going, you know, just
- 3:38Speaker 2: just this, just high voltage team likes ready to go,
- 3:41Speaker 2: to make we got sixty five games left, let's get
- 3:43Speaker 2: let's get after this thing. They were like the exact
- 3:46Speaker 2: opposite of that, And that's very, very disappointing.
- 3:49Speaker 1: It was super disappointing. And as you know, Bernie, you're
- 3:51Speaker 1: only as good as your starting pitching. And in April
- 3:54Speaker 1: and May, the Cardinals starting pitching had really overperformed.
- 3:57Speaker 3: July not so much.
- 3:59Speaker 1: The Cardinals rotation collectively has an ERA over seven. In July,
- 4:03Speaker 1: the Cardinals are eleven. I've lost eleven of their fourteen
- 4:06Speaker 1: games this month. They've dropped to two games over five hundred.
- 4:09Speaker 1: What struck me about how frustrating this series was because
- 4:11Speaker 1: you're completely right, they came out from the All Star
- 4:14Speaker 1: break and you're hoping to see a recharge, refresh, rejuvenated,
- 4:16Speaker 1: whatever word you want to use, team, and it was
- 4:20Speaker 1: just so disinterested.
- 4:22Speaker 3: It was completely flat.
- 4:24Speaker 1: It was And I think it's because when you will
- 4:26Speaker 1: have a team and in three games you're out of
- 4:28Speaker 1: it by the third inning.
- 4:30Speaker 3: It's really hard to come back from that. Think about it.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Are Polantaw On Friday, it was five nothing in the
- 4:34Speaker 1: third inning. Sunny Gray was three nothing in the first,
- 4:36Speaker 1: Miles Michael was four nothing in the first. When that's
- 4:39Speaker 1: how you're starting your games, it doesn't matter how good
- 4:41Speaker 1: your offense is or how well rested you are, whatever
- 4:44Speaker 1: you want to say about your team. That is a
- 4:46Speaker 1: really hard hole to climb out of. And this Cardinal's
- 4:48Speaker 1: rotation has struggled mightily, not even dating back to June,
- 4:52Speaker 1: but July especially so.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Again, you're only.
- 4:55Speaker 1: As good as you're starting pitching, and you're starting pitching
- 4:57Speaker 1: for the Cardinals has faltered extremely And I don't want
- 5:01Speaker 1: to give a pass to the offense because the offense
- 5:03Speaker 1: needs to do better as well. You can't rely on
- 5:05Speaker 1: Alec Frolis and Evon Herrera and Brendan Donnan to carry
- 5:07Speaker 1: the work. I know Nolan Arnado has done a very
- 5:10Speaker 1: nice job and coming back to a team where he
- 5:12Speaker 1: wasn't necessarily supposed to come back to. But the production
- 5:14Speaker 1: has to be better there. The production has to be
- 5:17Speaker 1: better with Wilson Contreras all around. You need a better
- 5:20Speaker 1: performance from your lineup. It didn't help that Nolan Gorman
- 5:23Speaker 1: starts the season with his back locked up, goes on
- 5:26Speaker 1: the aisle on Saturday. Like it just the more the
- 5:29Speaker 1: series went on, the more I was like, I thought
- 5:31Speaker 1: the also break was supposed to help teams, and I
- 5:33Speaker 1: think the Cardinals might have missed the memo here because
- 5:35Speaker 1: they don't look any better.
- 5:38Speaker 2: No, you know, Mason wins. Another guy just really hasn't
- 5:41Speaker 2: gotten much done. It just really hasn't. So those guys
- 5:45Speaker 2: are like all over the place. You know, they don't
- 5:47Speaker 2: get much offense out of the catcher position, which we know,
- 5:50Speaker 2: and Arnado's can only do what he can do. I mean,
- 5:53Speaker 2: I don't expect him to be terrific offensively. I mean,
- 5:57Speaker 2: sadly those days are over, but you know he'll come
- 5:59Speaker 2: through every now and then, you know, but he's you know,
- 6:02Speaker 2: he was out there trying to play with the source
- 6:04Speaker 2: older listen, Victor Scott's gotten a little better, but great defense,
- 6:08Speaker 2: but they're you know, still not getting much offense out
- 6:10Speaker 2: of center field. In fact, they're their outfield in general.
- 6:13Speaker 2: You know, when Burleson's not playing in the outfield, their
- 6:15Speaker 2: their offensive production has been awful, just flat out awful.
- 6:19Speaker 2: And you know they're cranked up Jordan Walker again. He
- 6:22Speaker 2: you know, he looked okay at times in this series.
- 6:25Speaker 2: But let's not have a parade. You know, it's let's like,
- 6:28Speaker 2: get right. But here's the here's the deal. I'm gonna
- 6:30Speaker 2: get back to what you said, because you're so right.
- 6:32Speaker 2: You know, you look at I could point out a
- 6:34Speaker 2: number of teams, but you look at like, for example,
- 6:37Speaker 2: you look at the Milwaukee Brewers. They have all kinds
- 6:39Speaker 2: of starting pitching depth. In fact, they are so well
- 6:41Speaker 2: positioned for the trade deadline because they have such a
- 6:44Speaker 2: surplus of starting pitching. They can fill any need they
- 6:48Speaker 2: want to fill, whether it be you know, shortstop, their
- 6:51Speaker 2: base whatever. And the reason is because they have great
- 6:54Speaker 2: starting pitching and it's deep starting pitching. And their offense
- 6:58Speaker 2: is pretty good, but it doesn't hit a lot of
- 7:00Speaker 2: home runs, but they steal bases, they manufacture, but they
- 7:03Speaker 2: have outstanding starting pitching and when you have that man
- 7:08Speaker 2: that covers a lot of your flaws, a lot of
- 7:10Speaker 2: your weaknesses, a lot of your holes. And the Cardinals
- 7:13Speaker 2: have been exposed. You know, their last forty four games,
- 7:16Speaker 2: that goes back to May thirtieth, they have a they
- 7:21Speaker 2: have the worst starting pitching eer the majors. It's five
- 7:24Speaker 2: point seven zero, and the quality start percentage is like,
- 7:28Speaker 2: really really low during that time. So it's almost like
- 7:31Speaker 2: a nullifier. I mean, this team is offensively challenged. It
- 7:35Speaker 2: has gotten progressively worse. And so when you're starting pitcher,
- 7:40Speaker 2: starting pitching, pardon me, you know, gets you blown out
- 7:42Speaker 2: of games early. And that's happening a lot. The Cardinals
- 7:45Speaker 2: do not have the offensive firepower to make comebacks every
- 7:48Speaker 2: now and then. Yeah they make comebacks, but let's be
- 7:50Speaker 2: honest about this. A lot of their comebacks were from
- 7:53Speaker 2: you know, very reasonable deficits where your couple runs down,
- 7:57Speaker 2: your three runs down, but you know, you're pretty much
- 8:01Speaker 2: you're pretty much you know, punched out even before you
- 8:05Speaker 2: have a chance to punch back. You know, you're knocked
- 8:07Speaker 2: down and basically knocked out before you can CounterPunch, you know,
- 8:11Speaker 2: And that's kind of what's happening to them, and is
- 8:14Speaker 2: if this starting pitching continues this way, I mean, forget
- 8:17Speaker 2: about it. You can't win with this kind of starting pitching.
- 8:20Speaker 2: And I know we'll get into the Matthew Libator situation,
- 8:24Speaker 2: and it's just there's not there's not any really encouraging
- 8:27Speaker 2: signs with the starting pitching. There's just not there. Sonny,
- 8:31Speaker 2: Sonny Gray is getting battered now. I mean you know, ah.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Yeah, that to me was the most disappointing game because
- 8:37Speaker 1: the plonte goes out there and gets shelled, and we
- 8:40Speaker 1: know this is the deal with him. He's gonna have
- 8:42Speaker 1: starts where he looks really good, he's gonna have starts
- 8:43Speaker 1: where he looks really bad. He's a groundball pitch to
- 8:45Speaker 1: contact guy. The Cardinals have eight hundred of those in
- 8:47Speaker 1: the organization. It's not Polante's fault. They need to modernize
- 8:50Speaker 1: that approach. They're trying. If not something that's going to
- 8:53Speaker 1: change overnight, but you have your ace take them out
- 8:55Speaker 1: on Saturday. And Sonny Gray has thrown some really nice
- 8:57Speaker 1: games for the Cardinals this year, but that four months
- 9:00Speaker 1: on Saturday was so disheartening because your age just got
- 9:03Speaker 1: wallet and again you're out of the game by the
- 9:06Speaker 1: second inning and you just kind of feel like, Okay,
- 9:08Speaker 1: here we go again.
- 9:09Speaker 3: It's a continuation of what we look like before the
- 9:11Speaker 3: All Star break.
- 9:13Speaker 1: It's super frustrating, especially when we all know what's at
- 9:16Speaker 1: stake here. John Mozeylak is gonna make his decision over
- 9:19Speaker 1: the next seven days, basically before the July thirty first
- 9:22Speaker 1: trade deadline. And when you have teams like the Brewers, who,
- 9:25Speaker 1: by the way, now our tied with the Cubs and
- 9:28Speaker 1: the Tigers for the best record in baseball, just pulling away.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I mean, to me, we'll get into this. I'm sure
- 9:35Speaker 1: it seems the path the Cardinals should take them the
- 9:37Speaker 1: deadline is very clear, but we know this organization is
- 9:40Speaker 1: going to be hesitant to do that. But this series really,
- 9:43Speaker 1: to me, in my opinion, showed all the reasons why
- 9:47Speaker 1: the Cardinals should not be considered a competitive team right now,
- 9:50Speaker 1: and they weren't supposed.
- 9:51Speaker 3: To be this year.
- 9:52Speaker 1: But the book we should remain on the future. This
- 9:54Speaker 1: series did nothing for me except maybe indicate that the
- 9:58Speaker 1: Diamondbacks could maybe not sell maybe they'll be the other
- 10:00Speaker 1: way around. Maybe the Cardinals will.
- 10:02Speaker 2: You know, and the Diamondbacks before the series, you know,
- 10:05Speaker 2: their run prevention was terrible. They were they were giving
- 10:07Speaker 2: up five to five point one runs per game before
- 10:10Speaker 2: the series started, and they shut this team down. And
- 10:13Speaker 2: you know, and and I'll just say this, it's it's
- 10:16Speaker 2: just listen.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Uh uh.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Henniosuarez is obviously, you know, having a great year, power hitter.
- 10:24Speaker 2: He is, but my goodness, they're throwing the ball right
- 10:27Speaker 2: down the middle to him, like.
- 10:29Speaker 3: Miles Michaels today on my team. Yes, that's a homer.
- 10:35Speaker 2: It's like, you know, I was texting with some of
- 10:37Speaker 2: my Camo ex friends and colleagues during the game. It's like,
- 10:40Speaker 2: what in what what universe does Miles Michaelis. Miles Michaelis think, Oh, okay,
- 10:45Speaker 2: here's Suarez probably the hottest home run hitter in baseball
- 10:48Speaker 2: right now, well maybe next to cal Riley or whatever. Uh,
- 10:52Speaker 2: I'm going to throw that ninety one heater and I'm
- 10:54Speaker 2: going to go up and he's, oh, I'm going to
- 10:56Speaker 2: put it right by him. It's like, yeah, maybe if
- 10:59Speaker 2: it was like nineteen eighty six, you could do that,
- 11:01Speaker 2: but it's not gonna happen now. And I got to
- 11:04Speaker 2: tell you, man, I'm sorry, but I was watching the
- 11:06Speaker 2: postgame show and Miles Michael has really irritated me, and
- 11:09Speaker 2: I know he irritated Cardinals fans because he was just
- 11:12Speaker 2: sort of like, eh, he said, you know, had had
- 11:15Speaker 2: two balls hit really hard. Uh, unfortunately there were both
- 11:19Speaker 2: home runs. But he ended his comments by being saying, like,
- 11:23Speaker 2: you know, other than that pretty good, he felt good
- 11:28Speaker 2: about a start. I mean, this is one of the
- 11:32Speaker 2: guys who should be one of your leaders, and that's
- 11:34Speaker 2: what he's going to say. After that, you throw two
- 11:38Speaker 2: meatballs to Suarez, who puts them into the you know,
- 11:41Speaker 2: puts him into like glints, you know, shoots him all
- 11:43Speaker 2: the way to Scottsdale, and it's like, well, pretty I
- 11:47Speaker 2: have two shots. But rather than that pretty good, get
- 11:52Speaker 2: him out of here. I'm serious. I mean that. I
- 11:55Speaker 2: don't know how Mozelacer build a wit or anyone in
- 11:58Speaker 2: charge there could listen to that and not be as
- 12:01Speaker 2: like furious as I am. You can't come out and
- 12:04Speaker 2: say that. Man, So this thing, that's just another sign
- 12:08Speaker 2: of things disintegrating. It's nothing personal, but his time has
- 12:13Speaker 2: come and it should be gone. You know, how much
- 12:16Speaker 2: longer are they going to stay with this? It's there's
- 12:19Speaker 2: nothing else. It's not like he's going to help turn
- 12:21Speaker 2: things around. And I'm sorry, but that really really bothered
- 12:25Speaker 2: me his postgame demeanor.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I wish I would have been there for the post
- 12:29Speaker 1: game because a lot of times and you know, the
- 12:30Speaker 1: spourne we see such a snort a short snippet of
- 12:34Speaker 1: the postgame reaction and Miles Michael is after most games,
- 12:38Speaker 1: I would say ninety five percent of the time is
- 12:40Speaker 1: really insightful. Like I remember the Wrigley Field incident on
- 12:42Speaker 1: fourth of July, the way that he was accountable accommodating.
- 12:47Speaker 1: So I was a little surprised to see how sure
- 12:48Speaker 1: his answers were postgame. But I will say I wasn't
- 12:52Speaker 1: there for the whole thing, so I don't know how
- 12:53Speaker 1: the rest of it went down. I was a very
- 12:55Speaker 1: short snippet from Banduel's Sports Agree. I said, again, I
- 12:59Speaker 1: don't know, but yeah, I would have been interested to
- 13:01Speaker 1: talk to Miles myself and think, you know, how are
- 13:05Speaker 1: the Cardinals evaluating each.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Start going forward?
- 13:07Speaker 1: And I think every starter there is obviously understands where
- 13:11Speaker 1: the rotation is and the lack of production. So hopefully
- 13:14Speaker 1: these rotation changes that the Cardinals are making. We'll get
- 13:16Speaker 1: into that in just a second. Will help turn some
- 13:19Speaker 1: things around because it is just exhausting to watch lately.
- 13:22Speaker 1: We'll get into the rotation changes first. So we need
- 13:24Speaker 1: to tell you guys that a little giveaway we're doing

- 13:57Speaker 1: that's at Chat BCC. So something the Cardinals made official
- 14:02Speaker 1: before Sunday's game. Our pow Michael mcgreobe will take a
- 14:06Speaker 1: spot start against the Colorado Rockies that will be on Monday.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Eric Fetti will start Tuesday, Andrey Polante on Wednesday. The
- 14:13Speaker 1: Cardinals are going to skip Matthew Libbers, who are scheduled start.
- 14:16Speaker 1: He will start on Saturday against the Padres. They want
- 14:19Speaker 1: to give him some extended rest coming out of the
- 14:22Speaker 1: All Star Break. Libby is has already surpassed his innings
- 14:25Speaker 1: thrown last season and is on track too far surpassed
- 14:28Speaker 1: the amount.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Of innings he's thrown in his career.
- 14:30Speaker 1: So just going to give him a little bit of
- 14:32Speaker 1: extra break, just like me, because I'm running out of
- 14:34Speaker 1: breath right now. For Libby, we can kind of see
- 14:38Speaker 1: it going into the All Star Break, one of many
- 14:40Speaker 1: players who look like they needed to just kind of reset.
- 14:42Speaker 1: So McGreevy will start again on Monday. The Cardinals have
- 14:45Speaker 1: got to start giving him better assignments here, the Mets,
- 14:48Speaker 1: the Dodgers, go take a start on horse Field.
- 14:50Speaker 3: You'll get him. You'll be fine.
- 14:52Speaker 1: And I do think, at least I hope that the
- 14:54Speaker 1: Cardinals are going to try to find away from a
- 14:57Speaker 1: Greevy to stay up for real this time. We know
- 15:00Speaker 1: Saint Louis is trying to shop Eric Betty. We know
- 15:03Speaker 1: that they intend or at least hope to have a
- 15:05Speaker 1: spot in the rotation come the trade deadline from Agreevy
- 15:08Speaker 1: to take over. It doesn't make any sense to option
- 15:10Speaker 1: him back down after this next spot start.
- 15:13Speaker 3: No god, where they continue to do that. So if
- 15:15Speaker 3: they do do that, would we be surprised.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Not really, But I'm under the belief that they are
- 15:19Speaker 1: going to try to do what they can to get
- 15:20Speaker 1: him to stay with the big league club.
- 15:22Speaker 3: And it's about time.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Yeah, and I listen in Colorado. I didn't see their
- 15:27Speaker 2: score today. You're work though. It's obviously a tough place
- 15:32Speaker 2: to pitch, although McGreevy does keep the ball down and
- 15:35Speaker 2: he knows how to pitch, and he's smart, and he's tough,
- 15:37Speaker 2: he's competitive, he's tough minded. There's a lot to like
- 15:40Speaker 2: about him. You know, listen in twenty twenty six of
- 15:44Speaker 2: Michael McGreevey is near the back of your rotation, fifth
- 15:47Speaker 2: starter maybe fourth starter, then that you're going to have
- 15:51Speaker 2: a really good rotation, right, And I don't because I
- 15:55Speaker 2: think I've had some fan backlash. You said, well, you
- 15:57Speaker 2: guys all talk about him like he's like a number
- 15:59Speaker 2: one started. Well if we do, and I don't think
- 16:01Speaker 2: we have. But we like him because we see the
- 16:05Speaker 2: qualities that he brings to this and anybody's watched him,
- 16:08Speaker 2: even games where his pitching line wasn't all that great,
- 16:12Speaker 2: there were some things in there you would really like.
- 16:14Speaker 2: I mean, there is part of the cliche, but there's
- 16:16Speaker 2: a real bulldok, excuse me, a real bulldog to him that. Frankly,
- 16:20Speaker 2: I don't think they have enough of right now, and
- 16:23Speaker 2: they should plug him in and let him go. I
- 16:25Speaker 2: don't really care who. I don't care like who doesn't
- 16:28Speaker 2: pitch too bad? You know, all of these guys have
- 16:31Speaker 2: no they've all had their chance. It's time to give
- 16:34Speaker 2: him a chance. And what is supposedly a quote runway season.
- 16:38Speaker 2: So but yeah, it's tough spot. And I don't know
- 16:40Speaker 2: what Colorado did today. I was looking for the score
- 16:43Speaker 2: here and I can't find it. But they you know,
- 16:45Speaker 2: they beat the Twins the first two games out there,
- 16:47Speaker 2: so they may they're perking up a little bit. So
- 16:50Speaker 2: I don't know. They're probably looking at the Cardinals like boys,
- 16:53Speaker 2: with this starting pitching, you know, we can win some
- 16:54Speaker 2: more games. So it's gonna be an interesting test out
- 16:58Speaker 2: of course field.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Yeah, this is not exactly the ballpark that you want
- 17:01Speaker 1: your seven plus era rotation to pitch in. I don't
- 17:05Speaker 1: care that the Rockies are quite literally fifty games under
- 17:08Speaker 1: five hundred. I mean, you have to take care of
- 17:12Speaker 1: business against the squad and even if you do, that
- 17:13Speaker 1: doesn't really say much about the direction of the club.
- 17:17Speaker 1: The thing about Michael mcgey because I want to go
- 17:19Speaker 1: back to that, sure, Michael McGreevy is not like going
- 17:22Speaker 1: to completely transform this organization, and I would hope that's
- 17:25Speaker 1: not like how we're presenting it.
- 17:28Speaker 3: I don't think it is.
- 17:29Speaker 1: What makes us so adamant that mcgeby should be in
- 17:32Speaker 1: the rotation is because he is very much the exact
- 17:35Speaker 1: definition of a runway.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Player you need this year.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Let's not even taken a consideration his status as a
- 17:40Speaker 1: first round draft pick from.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Twenty twenty one.
- 17:43Speaker 1: No organization treats their first round draft pick a college
- 17:48Speaker 1: pitcher by the way the way that the Cardinals have
- 17:51Speaker 1: treated Michael McGreevy. It's just complete malpractice when it comes
- 17:54Speaker 1: to drafting a college pitcher in the first round.
- 17:58Speaker 3: He's not going to be the ace of the rotation.
- 18:00Speaker 3: He's not going to take.
- 18:01Speaker 1: This organization from average to a perennial contender. But he
- 18:08Speaker 1: is maybe going to be an important piece of going
- 18:10Speaker 1: forward as a back end starter, and the Cardinals need
- 18:12Speaker 1: to see that. He also is by far one of
- 18:16Speaker 1: your better options in this rotation currently. So whatever route
- 18:19Speaker 1: you want to go, whether it's runway or results. Michael
- 18:22Speaker 1: mcbreby fits both both molds, which is why there has
- 18:25Speaker 1: been such a push for myself, from you, Bernie, from
- 18:28Speaker 1: many others to get him in the rotation. It's not
- 18:30Speaker 1: because we think he's going to be the next Cy Young.
- 18:32Speaker 1: It's because he has some great qualities. It's because he
- 18:36Speaker 1: will perform better than the majority of this rotation right now,
- 18:39Speaker 1: and because he figures to be a part of the
- 18:41Speaker 1: future going forward, so you might as well see.
- 18:44Speaker 3: What you have in him. I'm with you. I don't
- 18:45Speaker 3: care whose spot he takes.
- 18:47Speaker 1: I don't think the Cardinals are looking to do a
- 18:49Speaker 1: six man rotation right now at this time. I think
- 18:51Speaker 1: there's going to be a time where they make a
- 18:53Speaker 1: decision about Libby's Indians and Polante's Innians. But I still
- 18:56Speaker 1: think that they're trying, in the most perfect world to
- 18:59Speaker 1: trade Eric Fetti. That's why they're going to keep throwing
- 19:01Speaker 1: him out there. The Cardinals are not starting Eric Fetty
- 19:04Speaker 1: because they think that they give him their best chance
- 19:05Speaker 1: to win. They're starting him because it's their only way
- 19:08Speaker 1: to kind of prove any kind of value here. Because
- 19:11Speaker 1: we've talked about this before Bernie. Does it matter what
- 19:15Speaker 1: a pitcher looks like. It matters that a picture is healthy.
- 19:17Speaker 1: At the deadline, you have x amount of teams looking
- 19:20Speaker 1: for starting pitching, which is, as we know, the most
- 19:23Speaker 1: coveted thing at the deadline. Some organization is going to
- 19:26Speaker 1: look at Eric Fetty and think, you know what, maybe
- 19:28Speaker 1: we can fix him. We'll take a flyer on him
- 19:30Speaker 1: for a rental for what may be less than three
- 19:32Speaker 1: million dollars. But we have to know if he's healthy.
- 19:35Speaker 1: And if the Cardinals are all of a sudden skipping
- 19:37Speaker 1: his starts, then you have the red flag like maybe
- 19:39Speaker 1: he's not healthy. So he's going to continue pitching at
- 19:42Speaker 1: least one more time through the rotation. McGreevy should continue
- 19:45Speaker 1: pitching throughout the rest of the season, you know.
- 19:48Speaker 2: And here's the deal. I don't think he has much value,
- 19:50Speaker 2: but I think of a trade that it just shows
- 19:54Speaker 2: you that you can you take a guy that's really
- 19:57Speaker 2: not very good at it. You know, he was not
- 19:59Speaker 2: very good that season, and he's on expiring contract and
- 20:02Speaker 2: all that stuff, and you know you can still get
- 20:06Speaker 2: a little something from me. Here in the trade I'm
- 20:08Speaker 2: thinking about is when the Cardinals got Matt Swahonson, you know,
- 20:13Speaker 2: and I think it was the d Young trade. Now again,
- 20:15Speaker 2: I'm not I'm not sitting here saying, oh man, they
- 20:19Speaker 2: got Matt Sponts. That's really not the point. The point
- 20:22Speaker 2: is they they they cashed in an asset that had
- 20:25Speaker 2: no future with the team and they got a young
- 20:29Speaker 2: player who a young pitcher at the time. You know,
- 20:32Speaker 2: I read some stuff about him. He had some potential,
- 20:34Speaker 2: but he has shown that he can be a good
- 20:37Speaker 2: reliever in you're in a major league bullpen. I mean,
- 20:40Speaker 2: so you can even if the guy like Vetti's value
- 20:43Speaker 2: has got to be rock bottom. But even then, you know,
- 20:46Speaker 2: you you can get a marginal prospect or two, and
- 20:50Speaker 2: you never, you never, if you've done your scouting and
- 20:53Speaker 2: you have a good read on these prospects, you might
- 20:55Speaker 2: be able to, you know, pluck someone out of this
- 20:59Speaker 2: that can help you in the few you know. And
- 21:01Speaker 2: I'm saying that keeping my keeping keeping a good perspective
- 21:06Speaker 2: on this, you know. In other words, anything you can
- 21:08Speaker 2: get that can help you, that's a good trade for
- 21:10Speaker 2: a guy like Vetti. So we'll see what happens. But
- 21:12Speaker 2: before we I wanted to say one other thing about Libator.
- 21:16Speaker 2: I wonder, maybe it's not fair to wonder, but after all,
- 21:18Speaker 2: McGreevy was down there, okay, And I don't think this
- 21:22Speaker 2: is a second guest, but if people want to say
- 21:23Speaker 2: it's a second guest, okay, you and I and a
- 21:27Speaker 2: lot of people are are fans of Matthew Libator. We
- 21:30Speaker 2: love the decision to put him in the rotation. I'm
- 21:32Speaker 2: not second guests and that at all. But his first
- 21:35Speaker 2: ten starts were outstanding, except for maybe one, but really
- 21:37Speaker 2: really good body of work. His last eight no e
- 21:41Speaker 2: er a way up. But the thing that that the
- 21:43Speaker 2: telltale sign during this eight stretch start eight start stretch,
- 21:48Speaker 2: pardon me, is his strikeout rate is just absolutely collapsed.
- 21:51Speaker 2: I mean it's right down there with Fetti and Michaels Belonte.
- 21:54Speaker 2: So to me, that's a telltale sign. And it wasn't
- 21:58Speaker 2: like it just happened. It had happened gradually. I think
- 22:02Speaker 2: it's fair to ask, you know, should Ali and Dusty
- 22:06Speaker 2: Blake maybe given him that breather earlier? I think he
- 22:11Speaker 2: I think he needed one even before the All Star
- 22:14Speaker 2: break in now. In other words, I like what they're doing,
- 22:17Speaker 2: but I think they maybe should have done that or
- 22:20Speaker 2: could have done that sooner. And it's not like people
- 22:23Speaker 2: were never raising questions about, well, wait a minute, you know, uh,
- 22:27Speaker 2: what's going to happen when the when the innings pile up.
- 22:30Speaker 2: And I was one of the people that actually pushed
- 22:33Speaker 2: back against that because you know what I said, and
- 22:35Speaker 2: my friend Chris ryn j km wax was saying that
- 22:37Speaker 2: pretty early on, and I was kind of like poopoo
- 22:39Speaker 2: in him, and I said, oh, no, no, no, these
- 22:42Speaker 2: guys will make sure not to overdo it. They'll they'll
- 22:46Speaker 2: they'll skip, they'll skip a start. You know, maybe they'll
- 22:49Speaker 2: you know, the skip a start, then a little while
- 22:50Speaker 2: down the road they'll skip another start. And they didn't,
- 22:54Speaker 2: you know. So yeah, I'm a little befuddled that by that,
- 22:59Speaker 2: because again, you had McGreevy down there ready to go.
- 23:03Speaker 2: You could have given Libatare a couple of different breaks, like,
- 23:07Speaker 2: I don't understand it's gonna laugh instead of rage. I
- 23:12Speaker 2: just don't understand these people sometimes. I mean, you know,
- 23:16Speaker 2: you know, if you're going to make them a spot starter,
- 23:18Speaker 2: well he can be a spot starter for when you say,
- 23:20Speaker 2: you know, gosh, you look at the numbers, it looks
- 23:23Speaker 2: like Libby's probably a little worn out. We got to
- 23:27Speaker 2: give him a blow here. That's what mcgreevy's down there for. Right,
- 23:32Speaker 2: So I don't know, I don't know. I kind of
- 23:34Speaker 2: give up on this stuff by now, I really do.
- 23:36Speaker 2: I'm trying to try to make sense of it.
- 23:38Speaker 3: Oh, we have stuff trying to do that. It's never
- 23:41Speaker 3: going to make sense.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Stop making sense, fucking heads, stop making sense anyway.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Yeah, good, we just kept guessing. It's okay. I really
- 23:49Speaker 3: learned a lot.
- 23:49Speaker 1: All right, quick message from my partner with DraftKings. Then
- 23:52Speaker 1: we'll get into this upcoming Rocky series, which, as we
- 23:54Speaker 1: discussed Bernie, it is going to be a big one
- 23:57Speaker 1: because I very much believe this season well even though
- 24:00Speaker 1: it shouln't. Probably should have picked a direction a long
- 24:02Speaker 1: time ago. We'll hinge on how this series goes. But
- 24:05Speaker 1: first from DraftKings. Nothing beats relaxing on a hot summer

- 25:10Speaker 1: Thinking about when my voice sounded like a normal person jokes, Oh, you're.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Right, you're too you're too hard on yourself.
- 25:17Speaker 1: No, it's pretty bad, and it's only gonna get worse
- 25:18Speaker 1: because I'm recording a crossover episode with Kyle Glaser of
- 25:22Speaker 1: Padres Territory right after this, so we're gonna get a
- 25:25Speaker 1: double whammy of whatever is going on here.
- 25:28Speaker 2: By the way, the Twins did beat the Rockies today,
- 25:30Speaker 2: so they cooled them down a little bit. For the Cardinals.
- 25:32Speaker 2: You know what, we're not doing DraftKings picking someone. But
- 25:35Speaker 2: I just wanted to say this. I really want to
- 25:37Speaker 2: see Polone in this series because the Rockies love to
- 25:41Speaker 2: hit the ball in the air, obviously, and you know Polonte.
- 25:44Speaker 2: The one thing about that man groundball, ground ball, ground ball,
- 25:46Speaker 2: ground ball, ground ball. Everyone can laugh at me later,
- 25:50Speaker 2: but I think Polonte is gonna have a good start
- 25:51Speaker 2: out there.
- 25:53Speaker 1: That that is a choice, that is the take. Yeah,
- 25:56Speaker 1: you know what, we need some optimism, so.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Right right, did he start the third game in the series.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, ground ball baby, All right?
- 26:06Speaker 1: Yeah, can't you know what, I'd be a home run
- 26:07Speaker 1: if it doesn't leave the ground. So that's that's smart there, Bertie. Look,
- 26:12Speaker 1: I feel like this series against Diamondbacks kind of started
- 26:16Speaker 1: the Cardinals sliding to the soft cell mode. I think
- 26:19Speaker 1: if they lose the series to the Rockies, it will
- 26:21Speaker 1: definitively point that way. But as we just said, nothing's
- 26:24Speaker 1: for certain with this organization. We know John mozayloc Will
- 26:27Speaker 1: is comfortable waiting until the last couple of days before
- 26:30Speaker 1: definitively deciding. And let me clarify something because I just
- 26:33Speaker 1: saw this on Twitter. Just because the President Baseball Operations
- 26:36Speaker 1: is prepared to wait until ninety six seventy two hours
- 26:41Speaker 1: to make a definitive decision does not mean that he
- 26:43Speaker 1: is not preparing or checking in or calling. Come on, people,
- 26:46Speaker 1: we have to use our brains. I know there's some
- 26:48Speaker 1: no fatigue here, but you really think he's not on
- 26:51Speaker 1: the phone with multiple other executives around the league checking
- 26:54Speaker 1: in on different players, gauging the interest on his own team.
- 26:57Speaker 3: Of course he is.
- 26:58Speaker 1: He's just not committing a decision until he absolutely has to. Now,
- 27:02Speaker 1: this rocky series, should the Cardinals lose, it will ultimately
- 27:05Speaker 1: force his hand.
- 27:06Speaker 3: And I know that he has said, including to me.
- 27:09Speaker 1: He does not really want to trade a Ryan Helsley
- 27:12Speaker 1: or a film Aton or a Steven Mattz. They're open
- 27:14Speaker 1: to trading in Eric Betty regardless of direction, but if
- 27:17Speaker 1: they're gonna compete, Moe wants to hang on.
- 27:19Speaker 3: To his relievers.
- 27:20Speaker 1: If they pivot to this soft cell, those are most
- 27:24Speaker 1: likely the players that are gonna go. I don't see
- 27:26Speaker 1: the Cardinals trading anyone not on expiring deals. There is
- 27:30Speaker 1: a huge demn for a reliever market. You think of
- 27:32Speaker 1: any contender or fringe contender, they all want relievers. The Dodgers,
- 27:37Speaker 1: the Phillies, the Rays. Everyone wants relievers. There will be
- 27:41Speaker 1: a market for those three. They might not want to
- 27:43Speaker 1: move them, they might have to. This rocky series, I
- 27:46Speaker 1: think will give us a much better understanding of the
- 27:47Speaker 1: direction they'll go next week.
- 27:49Speaker 2: I see, I've already made up my mind, and it's
- 27:54Speaker 2: not prematurely at all, because again I was offering some
- 27:57Speaker 2: stuff here about this before and after picture. You know,
- 28:01Speaker 2: their last forty four games, and how brutal it's been,
- 28:04Speaker 2: and run differential starting pitching, the offense, like all the
- 28:08Speaker 2: arrows are pointing way way, way way down. And so
- 28:12Speaker 2: this team as it is right now, even with all
- 28:14Speaker 2: those players that MO might pitchers, players MO might be
- 28:19Speaker 2: really wanting to hang on to. It's it's not gonna
- 28:25Speaker 2: They're not going to make you a good team. The
- 28:26Speaker 2: Cardinals weaknesses have been laid wide open. Everyone knows what
- 28:29Speaker 2: they are now, and you don't turn those things around,
- 28:33Speaker 2: you might turn them around for a series. To your point, Okay,
- 28:36Speaker 2: go to Colorado. They play a horrible team, Maybe they
- 28:39Speaker 2: can win the series, maybe they can sweep that. Personally,
- 28:42Speaker 2: wouldn't change my mind because I'm going back with a
- 28:45Speaker 2: big body of work. That's you know, getting close to
- 28:47Speaker 2: fifty games. The other thing is that And if pardon me,
- 28:53Speaker 2: you know, for just throwing this in here too, but
- 28:55Speaker 2: I did write about it is part of a longer
- 28:58Speaker 2: column and I mentioned it on video. I think STL
- 29:01Speaker 2: Sports Central, thank you, you know who would have I
- 29:06Speaker 2: think surprisingly rich trade value in a very hungry reliever market.
- 29:12Speaker 2: Do Cardinals fans know that since Dusty Blake spotted a
- 29:17Speaker 2: mechanical flaw that was impacting his delivery, going back to
- 29:23Speaker 2: late April, it's like it's now twenty six relief appearances.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Jojo Romero has got an ERA of about zero point
- 29:31Speaker 2: forty and he has not allowed an inherited runner to score,
- 29:36Speaker 2: and he is murder on lefties. And here's the thing,
- 29:39Speaker 2: here's why I say they if somebody, if teams want
- 29:42Speaker 2: Jojo Romero, and he has been great since late late April,
- 29:48Speaker 2: you know, the best thing about it For a team
- 29:52Speaker 2: that wants him, he's not a rental. He's got one
- 29:55Speaker 2: more year left after this, so you buy him for
- 29:57Speaker 2: your push this year, and if you're not set up
- 30:01Speaker 2: for next year you will. You would have him the
- 30:04Speaker 2: full twenty twenty six at a reasonable price. So that's
- 30:09Speaker 2: the kind of guy that I think teams really cut
- 30:12Speaker 2: rather than just a rental. It's like, well, wait a minute,
- 30:14Speaker 2: this guy's been pretty good, and we ought to take
- 30:16Speaker 2: a look at this because we can just put them.
- 30:19Speaker 2: We know we'll have them for twenty twenty six. So
- 30:21Speaker 2: I would just throw that out there and just as
- 30:23Speaker 2: a general principal, Katie, you know, and I'm sure you
- 30:27Speaker 2: agree or agree to a point to me, MO ought
- 30:32Speaker 2: to just let everybody know that, hey, anybody's available, you know,
- 30:36Speaker 2: make us an offer. Now, this doesn't mean and I'm
- 30:39Speaker 2: saying just get rid of everybody. I'm not saying that
- 30:41Speaker 2: at all. But listen to anybody that wants to make
- 30:44Speaker 2: you an offer for anyone on your team. You ought
- 30:46Speaker 2: to listen to. It doesn't mean you have to say yeah, deal,
- 30:49Speaker 2: you listen, right, because you got to listen. Do what
- 30:53Speaker 2: you can to set this thing up better for hein
- 30:55Speaker 2: Bloom when he takes over. You know, you got to
- 30:58Speaker 2: sell a.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Pint of this year and just keep going the way
- 31:01Speaker 1: that they are. Uh, He's going to have to do
- 31:03Speaker 1: all the work anyway.
- 31:04Speaker 2: So I mean, if you've got guys on expiring contracts
- 31:08Speaker 2: or another reliever that gives a new team a full
- 31:11Speaker 2: year of his services, you know, don't hold onto these guys.
- 31:15Speaker 2: You're not You're not going to beat out these other
- 31:18Speaker 2: teams for a wild card spot. No, I mean your
- 31:21Speaker 2: less almost fifty games just proves how far you have collapsed, basically,
- 31:26Speaker 2: And that's what I'm going on. And I know as
- 31:28Speaker 2: soon as they win, like you know, three of four
- 31:31Speaker 2: games or for six games, people are going to be like,
- 31:34Speaker 2: oh see see No, I've already seen it. You know,
- 31:38Speaker 2: this pitch to contact staff. It just shows you, as
- 31:41Speaker 2: we all knew the perils of expecting them to be
- 31:45Speaker 2: able to kind of dodge all these balls in play,
- 31:48Speaker 2: you know, for an entire season, and they weren't able to.
- 31:51Speaker 2: They weren't able to pull off that magic trick. They
- 31:53Speaker 2: actually pulled it off for a very long time to
- 31:56Speaker 2: their credit, but it did.
- 31:57Speaker 1: They did an exceptional job in the beginning of the season, right, But.
- 32:00Speaker 2: The reality is that's going to catch up to you
- 32:02Speaker 2: because you just can't keep dancing dancing around all these
- 32:06Speaker 2: hard hit balls everywhere. You know. I don't know, so
- 32:10Speaker 2: I'm totally in the cell Cell cell.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Mode and I'm with you on Jojo Romero. I didn't
- 32:15Speaker 1: think about that, but he'll be heading into his final
- 32:17Speaker 1: year of arbitration in twenty twenty six. He's going to
- 32:19Speaker 1: be oh, the most money there. The Cardinals are in
- 32:22Speaker 1: a cost cutting phase. They do this with Tommy Ed
- 32:25Speaker 1: then I'm obviously a different scenario, but I could see
- 32:28Speaker 1: Jojo Romero having a lot of value there and maybe
- 32:30Speaker 1: the Cardinals are fid to listen.
- 32:32Speaker 3: We'll see how the rocking the.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Series goes, and then I fully expect we'll have a
- 32:35Speaker 1: much better understanding of the trade online picture from the
- 32:38Speaker 1: Saint Louis side after the series. I'll be back with
- 32:41Speaker 1: the team, whether they like it or not, starting tomorrow.
- 32:44Speaker 1: So it'd be nice to actually have some boots on
- 32:45Speaker 1: the ground for the first time in a week and
- 32:47Speaker 1: try to figure out what exactly is going on and
- 32:49Speaker 1: what's a fair expectation over the next ten days.
- 32:52Speaker 3: No matter what, it will not be boring. So we
- 32:55Speaker 3: have that.
- 32:55Speaker 2: That's right, that's right. Well, and I really mean this.
- 33:01Speaker 2: It's been a fascinating season. It's been a really interesting season,
- 33:06Speaker 2: and the Cardinals really played good ball, and they were
- 33:09Speaker 2: they were a very likable team for most of the way.
- 33:11Speaker 2: But I just think it's the classic case of like,
- 33:15Speaker 2: you know, they're kind of out over their skis now
- 33:16Speaker 2: and they've been exposed that, you know, the vulnerabilities have
- 33:20Speaker 2: just no longer can be concealed. They're just out there
- 33:23Speaker 2: in the open, you know. So so reality is like
- 33:26Speaker 2: kind of knocking you upside the head. You know. There's
- 33:29Speaker 2: that's really the bottom line. It doesn't mean these players
- 33:31Speaker 2: are worthless. It doesn't mean they're garbage. It doesn't know
- 33:34Speaker 2: it's listen, you know. I I the people that thought, hey,
- 33:38Speaker 2: this team, you know, they're gonna have a losing record,
- 33:40Speaker 2: they may even lose eighty seven, eighty eight games whatever,
- 33:45Speaker 2: those were not outrageously negative opinions because you look at
- 33:48Speaker 2: you look at all the questions in this whole runway
- 33:50Speaker 2: winning runway winning and then being stubborn, you know, by
- 33:54Speaker 2: keeping you know, Fatti and Michael, listen, your rotation, you
- 33:56Speaker 2: hold back one of your runway starters. I mean, this
- 33:59Speaker 2: whole this whole thing has been weird, and I think
- 34:02Speaker 2: that for the most part they've gotten they've gotten. I
- 34:06Speaker 2: think they've gotten a lot lot out of this roster
- 34:09Speaker 2: and that and that and that part should not be forgotten.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Am I down on them now?
- 34:13Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 34:13Speaker 2: I am, because I didn't like the way they came
- 34:15Speaker 2: out in Arizona and they were flat and they had
- 34:17Speaker 2: no no energy. That's inexcusable. But they they actually squeezed
- 34:23Speaker 2: quite quite a bit out of this this poorly constructed
- 34:27Speaker 2: roster and also this mission statement that was confusing to everybody.
- 34:32Speaker 2: You know, so I don't lose sight of that. I'm
- 34:35Speaker 2: not gonna, you know, basically sit here and say everything's
- 34:38Speaker 2: a failure. No. No, there's been some good discoveries. Yeah,
- 34:41Speaker 2: there's been some good discoveries this year. That was part
- 34:44Speaker 2: of the.
- 34:44Speaker 3: Season was discover what you have.
- 34:46Speaker 1: I think there are plenty of players that you can
- 34:49Speaker 1: look to build around for next year, starting with Brendan Donovan.
- 34:52Speaker 1: You have some exciting talent and triple A. Look just
- 34:55Speaker 1: because the Cardinals should probably soft sell, mainly because I
- 34:59Speaker 1: don't think there's a single move they could make to
- 35:01Speaker 1: improve their team to be surefire contenders at the deadline anyway, right,
- 35:05Speaker 1: it doesn't mean that this is a failure of a season.
- 35:07Speaker 3: In the long term.
- 35:09Speaker 1: I still think the Cardinals did the right thing this
- 35:11Speaker 1: year in trying to see what they had in house.
- 35:14Speaker 1: And if in house your talent did not project out
- 35:17Speaker 1: to what you thought it would be, at least you
- 35:19Speaker 1: know that now, so now you can focus on trying
- 35:23Speaker 1: to build in within, try to upgrade your player development system,
- 35:27Speaker 1: try to find something an offload talent that won't be
- 35:29Speaker 1: here next year, and try to get something to spin
- 35:31Speaker 1: it forward. Doesn't mean it's a failure of a season.
- 35:34Speaker 1: It's so difficult, but we have to keep the long
- 35:36Speaker 1: term view and focus here. And that's why hope happens
- 35:39Speaker 1: at this year's straight deadline.
- 35:40Speaker 2: But they that's why they've got to get something out
- 35:43Speaker 2: of the players that are going to be leaving. They
- 35:46Speaker 2: just have to. Because even if you make three or
- 35:48Speaker 2: four deals and none of them are quote blockbusters, it's
- 35:52Speaker 2: kind of the cumulative effect of who you add, you know,
- 35:55Speaker 2: and you might get really lucky on a prospect or two.
- 35:59Speaker 2: But I think this frankly, I think the season is
- 36:02Speaker 2: a failure. If you don't sell at the deadline.
- 36:07Speaker 3: That I would agree with.
- 36:09Speaker 2: And if most you know, he's hemming and hauling and hesitating,
- 36:12Speaker 2: and you know at that point the Dewitz have to
- 36:14Speaker 2: just say no first time ever. They're not ordering you
- 36:18Speaker 2: to sell, They're not, but they should.
- 36:19Speaker 3: Will not do that. I mean, you and I both
- 36:21Speaker 3: know that.
- 36:21Speaker 2: I mean it's like, how much more damage do you
- 36:25Speaker 2: want to do to your own franchise?
- 36:26Speaker 1: Right that I would, I would totally agree, that would
- 36:30Speaker 1: completely I think ruin this season if the Cardinals did
- 36:33Speaker 1: not capitalize and try to stay on the long term
- 36:36Speaker 1: view this again, like we just said, this is not
- 36:39Speaker 1: a team where it's one trade away from being a contender. Okay,
- 36:42Speaker 1: that's not who they are this year. That's okay, but
- 36:45Speaker 1: don't try to fool people into thinking that it is.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Look around the stadium, you think fans don't know that already?
- 36:51Speaker 1: They pull the span base into thinking that this team
- 36:53Speaker 1: is something more than it is. Let's do the smart thing,
- 36:56Speaker 1: Let's keep the four of.
- 36:57Speaker 3: The eyes on the future. We'll see how the Rocky
- 37:00Speaker 3: series go goes.
- 37:01Speaker 1: But I have an indication that the Cardinals are leaning
- 37:03Speaker 1: more towards a soft sell than before, so we'll see
- 37:06Speaker 1: Brainy and I can break it down after the Rocky
- 37:07Speaker 1: series will be fun.
- 37:08Speaker 2: We'll take care of your voice.
- 37:10Speaker 1: Yes, nobody needs to hear all right, Core being back
- 37:15Speaker 1: with you from Colorado. We'll have a crossover episode after
- 37:19Speaker 1: that again with Pager's Territory. Kyle Blazer does an amazing
- 37:21Speaker 1: job there, Bernie. I'll be back with you at some
- 37:24Speaker 1: point next week. Maybe this next series will go better
- 37:27Speaker 1: than the last one, low bar, but you know, let's
- 37:29Speaker 1: try it out.
- 37:33Speaker 3: O Kat, you thanks for watching. Cardinals Territory out soon
