Transcript
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: How do you respond to successful writers?
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: You know, the ones with best-selling books, large platforms, or lots of influence.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: When it comes to dealing with those people, we commonly have two different responses.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Either we dismiss their success as plain old dumb luck, or we ignore them because their success reinforces our own insecurities.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: If you've ever responded this way to a successful writer, don't feel too bad.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Every creative person on the planet has felt this way at times.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Our natural creative pride makes it hard to put ourselves in a learning position, but that's the only way we can grow.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: A major key to success is putting yourself in the orbit of other successful writers.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: And this can include people who you'll never meet as well as people you can develop a personal relationship with.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Let's take two examples.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: So chances are pretty slim that you will ever be able to convince Stephen King to mentor you personally.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: However, there are plenty of interviews and articles about his writing habits and his approach to storytelling.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: You can learn from all of these.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: But even more powerful is the writer who you get to know personally.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Invite them out to lunch, have them as a guest on your podcast, subscribe to their newsletter and develop a dialogue with them, or join their course or their mastermind.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: You'll be amazed at the openness that other successful writers have about sharing their strategies and what they've learned from their failures.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: This is the exact reason I continue to pay to be part of masterminds, courses, retreats, and conferences.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: I invest in myself because my future success depends on it.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: It's also, quite frankly, the reason why I lead the daily writer community, because I know how important a great community is to your success.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: You know, so many writers aren't willing to invest the time or the money into their creativity or business.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: But when you do, you'll immediately set yourself apart and get yourself on the fast track to much greater success.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
