- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast.
- 0:17It's also an online course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:31Service, and Love.
- 0:33As we think about calling, have you ever
- 0:36second-guessed whether something was God's call in
- 0:39your life?
- 0:41I have definitely had this experience where I
- 0:43do something, I think that I'm doing it
- 0:45because God called me to do it, and
- 0:47then I'm facing some challenges with it and
- 0:49I start to second-guess myself.
- 0:50I start to second-guess that idea that
- 0:52it was what God called me to do.
- 0:54And in conversations with friends and family, I
- 0:56found out this is a very common experience.
- 0:58I have friends who moved to LA, and
- 1:00then afterwards they told me, it felt so
- 1:02clear that God was calling us to move
- 1:03to LA, but then like, we just couldn't
- 1:05figure out a way to make life work
- 1:06in LA.
- 1:07Or I've had other friends who thought that
- 1:09they were called to the mission field, and
- 1:11they maybe even got into a nation and
- 1:13a different cross-cultural context to their own,
- 1:15and they were starting to do ministry there,
- 1:17but then it all fell apart.
- 1:18And they came home, and now they're asking,
- 1:19are we called to cross-cultural mission long
- 1:21-term or not?
- 1:22I've had friends with this in the secular
- 1:24world, where you invest time and money in
- 1:27a specific degree.
- 1:28I have a friend who trained as an
- 1:29opera singer, and then the market just isn't
- 1:32there to get a job in what you
- 1:34studied.
- 1:34And so you second-guess, well, when I
- 1:36was praying about what to declare a major
- 1:38in, was I following God's will back then?
- 1:40Is this idea of following God's will even
- 1:42possible, or is it all just sort of
- 1:44a wash in the end?
- 1:46You know, time and chance and fate and
- 1:48serendipity, and this idea that I could actually
- 1:50discern what God wants me to do maybe
- 1:52just feels too elusive, too imaginary.
- 1:56And I think if we pay attention to
- 1:58scripture, we get some really helpful bright lines.
- 2:03Just like imagine a plane coming in to
- 2:05land, right?
- 2:07And that guy waving the orange cones saying,
- 2:09here, come down here.
- 2:11Come down right here.
- 2:12There's lights.
- 2:13There's bright lines that show you, here's the
- 2:15place to go.
- 2:16Here's the place to land.
- 2:18I think we can find those bright lines
- 2:20in scripture in a way that really helps
- 2:22us gain confidence about discerning God's will.
- 2:28And so what I want to do in
- 2:29this episode is give you a framework that
- 2:31I learned from a pastor named Kevin Miller,
- 2:33and he was drawing on the work of
- 2:36a pastor named Frederick Buechner, more of a
- 2:39writer than a pastor in some ways, and
- 2:41then also the work of a leadership guy
- 2:43named Jim Collins.
- 2:44So he kind of took a Jim Collins
- 2:45concept and a Frederick Buechner concept, and he
- 2:47combined them in a way that I think
- 2:50is a really helpful framework.
- 2:52So here's the framework.
- 2:53Imagine a Venn diagram, but it's one with
- 2:55three circles, okay?
- 2:57And one of those circles is what you
- 2:59desire.
- 3:00What I desire.
- 3:01We'll come back to that question of desire
- 3:03and how that has a legitimate and a
- 3:05holy place in God's vision and his guidance
- 3:07in our lives.
- 3:08Okay, then the other circle is what the
- 3:10world needs.
- 3:11So we might think of that as kind
- 3:13of the circle of mission, right?
- 3:14What is God sending us into the world
- 3:16to do to serve people's real needs, both
- 3:19tangible and spiritual?
- 3:20Okay, so the world's need, that's another circle.
- 3:22And the other circle, the third circle, is
- 3:25the economic engine.
- 3:26Where does the money come from, right?
- 3:28Or if you'd prefer and you want to
- 3:30use some more spiritual language, God's provision.
- 3:32How is God providing for what's in these
- 3:35other two circles?
- 3:37Okay, so what I desire, what the world
- 3:39needs, and economic engine.
- 3:42So the question is, what's in the middle
- 3:46there?
- 3:46What's in the exact center that overlaps all
- 3:49three points?
- 3:50Okay, and I want to say a couple
- 3:51things here.
- 3:52The first is, we shouldn't assume that it's
- 3:55just one thing in the center that hits
- 3:57all three points.
- 3:58It may be that God gives us a
- 4:01full-time job with benefits that's an economic
- 4:04engine to provide for us and our family's
- 4:05well-being, that also serves the needs of
- 4:08the world in a way that fits our
- 4:09deep desires and spiritual gifts.
- 4:11That is totally possible.
- 4:12There may be one glorious thing that somehow
- 4:15hits all three.
- 4:16But it's also possible that God will give
- 4:19us a combination of things.
- 4:21Maybe he gives us a job that meets
- 4:23our economic needs, while also giving us a
- 4:25context in our church where we can use
- 4:27our spiritual gifts and serve the needs of
- 4:28the world.
- 4:29Or maybe our job serves a missional purpose,
- 4:32but it's not very remunerative, and so there's
- 4:35some other way.
- 4:36Maybe our spouse's job or an additional job
- 4:38that we have that's more of that economic
- 4:40engine.
- 4:40Rather than trying to find that perfect needle
- 4:43in the haystack that gets all three, often
- 4:46in life, the path of faithfulness is finding
- 4:48a combination of things, but we need to
- 4:50be sensitive to all three dimensions.
- 4:53OK, now I want to acknowledge that I
- 4:56got this kind of framework from Kevin Miller,
- 4:59but I also want to kind of go
- 5:01to the source material that Kevin Miller was
- 5:02drawing on.
- 5:03So the overall three overlapping circles idea, the
- 5:09three-part Venn diagram, that concept came from
- 5:11a leadership consultant named Jim Collins, and he
- 5:14calls it the hedgehog concept because hedgehogs are
- 5:16really good at doing one thing.
- 5:18They curl up into a little ball.
- 5:19That's the one thing they do, and they're
- 5:20really, really good at it.
- 5:22So in Jim Collins' original vision, the circles
- 5:24were a little bit different.
- 5:26It was more about what you can be
- 5:28best at than what the world needs.
- 5:30Kind of that what's your what's your value
- 5:32proposition?
- 5:32What distinguishes you from the competition?
- 5:34But he's the one that gave us the
- 5:36three circles.
- 5:36So then Kevin Miller, very wisely, was like,
- 5:38OK, well, we should have a more missional
- 5:40take on this.
- 5:41And in order to give that more missional
- 5:43take, Kevin Miller drew on the work of
- 5:45a writer named Frederick Buechner.
- 5:47So I actually want to read the original
- 5:48quote from Frederick Buechner.
- 5:50It might actually be a familiar quote.
- 5:53I think we've used it earlier in this
- 5:55podcast, in a different series, because the final
- 5:57line is the place God calls you to
- 6:01is the place where your deep gladness and
- 6:04the world's deep hunger meet.
- 6:06Have you ever heard that before?
- 6:07But I want to read the paragraph that
- 6:09comes before, because the whole paragraph is actually
- 6:10really rich.
- 6:11It's really good.
- 6:12So this is Buechner speaking about this idea
- 6:15of vocation.
- 6:17It comes from the Latin vocare, to call,
- 6:19and means the work a man is called
- 6:21to by God.
- 6:22There are different kinds of voices calling you
- 6:24to all different kinds of work.
- 6:25And the problem is to find out which
- 6:27is the voice of God rather than of
- 6:29society, say, or the superego or self-interest.
- 6:32By and large, a good rule for finding
- 6:34out is this.
- 6:35The kind of work God usually calls you
- 6:37to is the kind of work, A, that
- 6:39you need most to do, and B, that
- 6:42the world most needs to have done.
- 6:44If you really get a kick out of
- 6:45your work, you've presumably met requirement A.
- 6:48But if your work is writing TV deodorant
- 6:50commercials, the chances are you've missed requirement B.
- 6:53On the other hand, if your work is
- 6:55being a doctor in a leper colony, you
- 6:57have probably met requirement B.
- 6:59But if most of the time you're bored
- 7:00and depressed by it, the chances are you
- 7:02have not only bypassed A, but probably aren't
- 7:05helping your patients much either.
- 7:07Neither the hair shirt nor the soft birth
- 7:09will do.
- 7:11The place God calls you to is the
- 7:13place where your deep gladness and the world's
- 7:16deep hunger meet.
- 7:18It's originally from Frederick Buechner's book, Wishful Thinking.
- 7:22Isn't that wonderful the way he kind of
- 7:24teases it out?
- 7:24Neither the hair shirt nor the soft birth
- 7:28will do.
- 7:28A hair shirt being like an uncomfortable shirt
- 7:31that Christians in certain traditions would wear as
- 7:33like a sign of penitence or repentance because
- 7:35it was uncomfortable.
- 7:37A life where we just resign ourselves to
- 7:40misery and we're grumpy people and we're frustrated
- 7:42people and we're just grumpy and frustrated, but
- 7:44we're very morally dutiful, that's not actually the
- 7:47vision of life that the Bible communicates that
- 7:49we're supposed to step into as followers of
- 7:51Jesus.
- 7:51We actually probably do more harm than good
- 7:54for the cause of the gospel if we're
- 7:55just these sort of depressed killjoys all the
- 7:58time.
- 7:58Now, I don't say that to say that
- 8:00depression is incompatible with following Jesus.
- 8:02We've leaned into that in other conversations and
- 8:05depression is very much part of my journey.
- 8:07But if you're always ignoring your own interior
- 8:09emotional life and emotional needs out of some
- 8:12sort of sense of heroic martyrdom in your
- 8:15walk with Jesus, that may not be as
- 8:19virtuous as you think it is.
- 8:20On the flip side, neither the hair shirt
- 8:22nor the soft berth will do.
- 8:24The answer is not to just simply indulge
- 8:27all of our desires either.
- 8:28No, no, no, no, no.
- 8:29Instead, we're called to kind of find this
- 8:32point of intersection where something that that really
- 8:35does resonate with our soul, with our deep
- 8:38desires is there.
- 8:39And it also it's something that serves the
- 8:41world, serves God's purposes in the world.
- 8:43And we can see this combination in a
- 8:45variety of places in scripture.
- 8:48So I want to just give some examples
- 8:49of that because you might be skeptical, right?
- 8:51You might think, oh, I don't know.
- 8:53Does the Bible really teach this stuff that
- 8:55my desires matter?
- 8:57Well, consider this.
- 8:59Proverbs 13, 12.
- 9:00Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a
- 9:03longing fulfilled is a tree of life.
- 9:07A tree of life.
- 9:10A longing fulfilled.
- 9:12Hmm.
- 9:13Seems like maybe God cares about our desires
- 9:15and sometimes he brings them to fulfillment.
- 9:18All right, let's get even a little bit
- 9:20more specific.
- 9:21Uh, the book of Ezra chapter seven, we
- 9:23talked about Nehemiah a couple episodes ago.
- 9:25This is that same overall story with a
- 9:27King Artaxerxes kind of supporting a construction and
- 9:31civic project in Jerusalem.
- 9:33And, uh, this is commenting about that, that
- 9:36this pagan King would, would give support to
- 9:38this project.
- 9:38And this is verse 27.
- 9:41Praise be to the Lord, the God of
- 9:42our ancestors who has put it into the
- 9:44King's heart to bring honor to the house
- 9:46of the Lord in Jerusalem in this way.
- 9:50Did you notice that the God of our
- 9:53ancestors who has put it into the King's
- 9:55heart to bring honor to the house of
- 9:57the Lord in Jerusalem in this way, God
- 10:00didn't just command the King by a robot
- 10:03or by a moral duty.
- 10:05He gave him something in his heart.
- 10:07He gave him some sort of inclination, some
- 10:09sort of desire to help in this way
- 10:11that ultimately served his purposes.
- 10:14So we see in this case, even in
- 10:15the case of a pagan King, God is
- 10:18putting a desire in someone's heart and bringing
- 10:20that desire to fulfillment is fulfilling God's purposes.
- 10:24So how much more if it's true of
- 10:25a pagan King, couldn't it be true of
- 10:27us too?
- 10:28Let's look at an example of that, of
- 10:30a disciple of Jesus having a desire in
- 10:32their heart.
- 10:33That's from God.
- 10:33This is from second Corinthians chapter eight verses
- 10:3716 and 17.
- 10:38This is Paul writing.
- 10:39Paul says, thanks be to God who put
- 10:41into the heart of Titus, the same concern
- 10:43I have for you for Titus, not only
- 10:46welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to
- 10:48you with much enthusiasm and on his own
- 10:51initiative with much enthusiasm and on his own
- 10:54initiative.
- 10:55Again, this language of God putting something in
- 10:57the heart is there.
- 10:59Paul has a concern for the Corinthians, but
- 11:01he says that God put that same concern
- 11:03into Titus's heart.
- 11:05Titus is not just dragging himself to go
- 11:07help out the Corinthians with a sense of
- 11:09obligatory moral duty, even though he hates it.
- 11:12No, he's coming with much enthusiasm and on
- 11:14his own initiative.
- 11:15He has a genuine desire, a desire in
- 11:17his heart that is from God, but it's
- 11:19also very much his own and that's motivating
- 11:21him to act.
- 11:22And that's good.
- 11:23That's the vision of life that we're given
- 11:24in scripture that somehow something inside of us
- 11:27that yes is from God, but it's very
- 11:29much a genuine desire in our hearts, bears
- 11:32fruit in mission to the church and to
- 11:34the world, neither the hair shirt nor the
- 11:37soft birth will do.
- 11:39Okay.
- 11:39So again, coming back to our, our Venn
- 11:41diagram, we can see that scripture has the,
- 11:44the circle of desire that it actually affirms
- 11:46our desires as a place where God's purposes
- 11:49can be established.
- 11:50And then also this, uh, this question of
- 11:53what the world needs, right?
- 11:54Uh, what the world needs, uh, is obviously
- 11:57central there in scripture.
- 11:58We might even think of John 3 16
- 11:59for God.
- 12:00So loved the world that he gave his
- 12:02only son.
- 12:03This even informs in a way God's own
- 12:05vocation, what God decided to do in the
- 12:07world is where his desire met the world's
- 12:10deep need, how much more should that be
- 12:12the case for us?
- 12:12But then what about this third circle?
- 12:14What about the economic engine?
- 12:16Sometimes as Christians, we can either forget about
- 12:19this one or obsess about this one.
- 12:21I don't think either of those are healthy.
- 12:23Instead, we need to discern where God is
- 12:26moving.
- 12:28Okay.
- 12:28So economic engine, the idea here is that
- 12:30sometimes you need money to pay for things,
- 12:33you need a job that pays the bills,
- 12:35or you need something that's going to provide
- 12:38the resources to go do the project that
- 12:40you feel called to do.
- 12:41Uh, and this should not be thought of
- 12:43as some sort of secular or fleshly or,
- 12:47or worldly way of thinking.
- 12:48This is very much a, a biblical significant
- 12:51part of our concerns is to think about
- 12:54how did the dollars and cents go together
- 12:56in our lives and in our work.
- 12:57This is also in the book of Proverbs.
- 12:59So in that same chapter, uh, Proverbs chapter
- 13:0113, where we talked about the desire or
- 13:04the longing fulfilled being a tree of life,
- 13:05few verses earlier, verse four, a sluggards appetite
- 13:09is never filled, but the desires of the
- 13:11diligent are fully satisfied.
- 13:14There's that language of desire again, but here
- 13:16it's connected to a character quality of diligence,
- 13:18right?
- 13:19It's, it's saying, Hey, you can do something
- 13:21to fulfill your desires.
- 13:22You can work hard.
- 13:24You can, you can go get a job.
- 13:26You can work in the fields.
- 13:27You can, you can figure out a way
- 13:28to save, you can do something to accomplish
- 13:31your own desires.
- 13:32Again, that's nuanced in scripture with the reality
- 13:35that time and chance happened to them all,
- 13:37as we talked about in another passage.
- 13:40Um, we don't have full mastery over our
- 13:42own circumstances, but we do have personal agency.
- 13:45That's affirmed in scripture.
- 13:46And so we have a responsibility to look
- 13:49at the dollars and cents of a situation
- 13:50and to take responsibility for that calculation when
- 13:53we decide how to And that may be
- 13:55part of how God communicates.
- 13:57If God is not providing financially for something,
- 14:00he may not be saying that that's his
- 14:02way.
- 14:03Okay.
- 14:03So on the one hand, we shouldn't forget
- 14:05about it.
- 14:05We should pay attention to it.
- 14:07It's there in scripture, the economic engine piece,
- 14:09it matters, but, but we also shouldn't obsess
- 14:12about it.
- 14:13Sometimes people treat the economic engine piece in
- 14:16fleshly terms in the sense of unless they
- 14:20can chart the exact path for how every
- 14:22cent is going to fall into place, they're
- 14:24not going to take any risks for the
- 14:25kingdom of God.
- 14:26They're not going to do anything that's financially
- 14:27risky at all, ever.
- 14:29Uh, even if they have some sort of
- 14:31sense of call from God to do it,
- 14:33that would be obsessing about the economic engine.
- 14:36Again, a spiritual way of thinking about the
- 14:38economic engine is God's provision.
- 14:39If God is being really clear in these
- 14:42other ways, if he's giving you a very
- 14:44clear desire, if he's giving you a very
- 14:46clear movement towards a specific need It could
- 14:49be that God is calling you to take
- 14:50a step of faith and that his financial
- 14:53provision will follow.
- 14:55Now we need to discern that carefully and
- 14:58see if the provision is indeed following or
- 15:00not, rather than just spiritualizing us chasing our
- 15:03own ideas.
- 15:04But we really do need to have an
- 15:06openness to risk-taking to, to moving forward
- 15:08with the plan when there's a plausible financial
- 15:12arrangement for how it could work out, but
- 15:14even if the money isn't there yet, we
- 15:16need to take that step.
- 15:18Okay.
- 15:19So as we think about our calling, it
- 15:22can be helpful to look at all three
- 15:24circles of the Venn diagram.
- 15:26What are my deep desires?
- 15:27Remembering scripture affirms that.
- 15:29What are the world's needs?
- 15:30Of course, scripture affirms that.
- 15:31And what's the economic engine?
- 15:33Scripture also affirms that because it's not to
- 15:35obsess about it.
- 15:36And then see, is there something that fits
- 15:38all three?
- 15:38If there is just one thing, one job,
- 15:40one life pattern that fits all three.
- 15:42Wonderful.
- 15:44But often what's the combination of things that's
- 15:47going to fit all three.
- 15:48And we can just give that over to
- 15:49the Lord and say, Lord, here's my combination.
- 15:52Here's my job and my side hustle and
- 15:53my service at my church.
- 15:54And somehow may they meet all these three
- 15:56things and God will meet us there.
- 15:58And then when things change, we discern it
- 16:00again.
- 16:01We stay flexible.
- 16:02So use this framework as a guideline, as
- 16:05those bright lines for discernment.
- 16:07God's going to give you what you need
- 16:09to land where he's leading you.
- 16:13Lord Jesus, thank you that you don't leave
- 16:15us in the dark.
- 16:16You don't leave us with nowhere to go
- 16:18or nothing to understand, but you do give
- 16:20us just enough light to take our next
- 16:23step.
- 16:24So help us to keep our eyes open
- 16:25to discern what you were calling us to,
- 16:29both in terms of our own desire and
- 16:30the needs of the world, in terms of
- 16:33financial realities and your supernatural provision.
- 16:36Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 16:38do our work with you.
- 16:44Thanks for listening.
- 16:46Finding God at Work is a production of
