- 0:04Speaker 1: What's up. He's Trevor Rosenthal.
- 0:06Speaker 2: I'm Katie Wu. Welcome back to Cardinal Territory, Trevor. I
- 0:09Speaker 2: feel like I haven't seen you in a thousand years,
- 0:11Speaker 2: but it's really only been a week.
- 0:12Speaker 3: How are you well, Katie. Good to see I'm glad
- 0:15Speaker 3: you missed me. That makes me feel good. How's how's
- 0:18Speaker 3: our show doing? I mean, we're still in business, so
- 0:20Speaker 3: must be doing all right.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Dude, We're doing okay.
- 0:22Speaker 2: We are doing okay, and that's I think the bar right, like,
- 0:26Speaker 2: just do okay. And again, unfortunately, our loyal listeners and viewers,
- 0:32Speaker 2: we still don't have any news for you, but that's okay.
- 0:35Speaker 2: What's really being tested is the creativity between you and
- 0:38Speaker 2: I for this podcast, because we are rapidly running out
- 0:41Speaker 2: of new topics. But the good news is is as
- 0:44Speaker 2: of our record day Monday, January twenty seventh, two weeks
- 0:47Speaker 2: from today, I will be heading to Jupiter for the
- 0:50Speaker 2: start of spring training.
- 0:51Speaker 1: So baseball season is very near.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I personally don't feel like it is, Trevor, do you.
- 1:00Speaker 3: I mean, the gauge for me was always the Super Bowl.
- 1:04Speaker 3: So now that we're through the league championships and the
- 1:08Speaker 3: Super Bowls in a couple of weeks. Now, that was
- 1:10Speaker 3: always the gauge. So the fact that the next football
- 1:13Speaker 3: game is the Super Bowl. I mean, you know, as
- 1:15Speaker 3: a baseball player going in the off season, like once
- 1:17Speaker 3: the Super Bowls being played, you're like you're sitting there
- 1:19Speaker 3: with your buddies and having a good time. You're like,
- 1:21Speaker 3: all right, this is gonna be maybe the last time
- 1:22Speaker 3: I'm this relaxed for the next eight months. So the
- 1:26Speaker 3: Super Bowl, Yeah, I mean, it's around the corner. We're
- 1:28Speaker 3: getting there.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I know, it's so scary.
- 1:31Speaker 2: First of all, January has seemed like eight weeks long.
- 1:34Speaker 2: But I think one of the reasons why I don't
- 1:36Speaker 2: feel like baseball season is so soon is because there
- 1:39Speaker 2: are so many free agents still unsigned, like Pete Alonso,
- 1:43Speaker 2: who knows Alex Bregman.
- 1:45Speaker 1: That's been a big thing.
- 1:45Speaker 2: We've been monitoring Jack Flaherty, former Cardinal still not signed
- 1:50Speaker 2: and all these big names. I mean, we're used to
- 1:52Speaker 2: it now with baseball. Maybe those off season editions kind
- 1:55Speaker 2: of trickling into January. But I think we're doing the
- 1:58Speaker 2: sport in disservice by having so many free agents unclaimed
- 2:01Speaker 2: with two weeks to go until pitchers and catchers. So
- 2:04Speaker 2: maybe that's why I think there's just so many things
- 2:06Speaker 2: still undecided in baseball in general, but especially for the Cardinals,
- 2:10Speaker 2: where I'm like, no, we can't really be this close,
- 2:12Speaker 2: can we?
- 2:13Speaker 3: Yeah? I agree. I mean baseball has does a lot
- 2:16Speaker 3: of things, well, free agent signings is not one of them.
- 2:19Speaker 3: It's kind of frustrating to sit here and have so
- 2:23Speaker 3: many guys still on the market, so many guys, Like
- 2:26Speaker 3: we could start a whole other league with these free
- 2:28Speaker 3: agents that are available and.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Be a good league.
- 2:31Speaker 1: It'd be like a pretty good team, I think.
- 2:33Speaker 3: I think, so we could compete.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Yeah, it's something, But since we're so close to baseball,
- 2:39Speaker 2: and granted these rosters are going to change before opening Day,
- 2:43Speaker 2: figured we might as well preview the always interesting, definitely
- 2:48Speaker 2: not normal National League Central. Of all the divisions in baseball,
- 2:52Speaker 2: I think the Ennell Central has been the least competitive
- 2:56Speaker 2: in a grand scheme of things, but very competitive within
- 2:58Speaker 2: its own division because you you have a five teams
- 3:01Speaker 2: that are between eighty to ninety wins each year, and
- 3:04Speaker 2: the NL Central's postseason success over the last five or
- 3:07Speaker 2: six years has not been great. I don't even think
- 3:10Speaker 2: a team from the NL Central has gotten out of
- 3:12Speaker 2: the first round of playoffs since twenty twenty, so.
- 3:16Speaker 1: That's not good.
- 3:17Speaker 2: But if you're the Saint Louis Cardinals and you're sitting
- 3:20Speaker 2: here saying we want to compete next year.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Good news. You can probably still compete in the division.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Now. Is there a difference between competing in the NL
- 3:28Speaker 2: Central and competing in Major League Baseball at large? Yes,
- 3:32Speaker 2: we know this, but anything to sneak into the expanded playoffs.
- 3:36Speaker 1: So let's break into the NL Central.
- 3:40Speaker 2: We'll start first with the Milwaukee Brewers, so have no
- 3:45Speaker 2: fear of Cardinals fans. The Cardinals are not the only
- 3:48Speaker 2: team that have not signed a free agent to a
- 3:50Speaker 2: major league contract. The Brewers have not either, and they've
- 3:53Speaker 2: lost two key pieces to last year's division winning club.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Devin Williams trade into the Yankees and William Johmas signed
- 3:59Speaker 2: a free agent Cup Track in San Francisco. Now, when
- 4:03Speaker 2: I'm looking at the Brewers here, I like their pitching.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Brandon Woodchuf's coming back, Freddy Parolta will be their ace.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Nesta Cortes is a Brewer. I forgot about that. I'm
- 4:14Speaker 2: sure they'll be able to figure him out because they
- 4:16Speaker 2: do that with every one of their pitchers. The Brewers
- 4:18Speaker 2: have significant starting pitching depth, and that is a strength.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Noble Adamas hurts he was a catalyst for them last year,
- 4:25Speaker 2: but William contraras he can mash. I like their outfields,
- 4:29Speaker 2: Christian Yellwich when healthy, just going through at Jacksonurio of
- 4:33Speaker 2: course exciting young talent, But when I'm looking at the Brewers,
- 4:35Speaker 2: there are not a lot of household names other than
- 4:38Speaker 2: that Juey Ortiz can play that really jump out at me. However,
- 4:42Speaker 2: given what the Brewers have done over the last four
- 4:45Speaker 2: years through out of four division titles, and the reigning
- 4:48Speaker 2: National League Manager of the Year Pet Murphy, who I
- 4:49Speaker 2: know you're a fan of Trevor, it kind of just
- 4:52Speaker 2: seems like they're.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Gonna figure it out.
- 4:54Speaker 2: They're going to figure out a way to be at
- 4:55Speaker 2: the top of the division because they always do.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree, I mean, those are definitely some piece
- 5:00Speaker 3: is that will Well well, they're gonna miss. But listening
- 5:05Speaker 3: to you and and Kyle talking the last episode and
- 5:08Speaker 3: kind of dissecting players and looking at metrics and statistics,
- 5:12Speaker 3: there's one thing that you guys said that kind of
- 5:14Speaker 3: took me by surprise. You talked about like the makeup
- 5:17Speaker 3: and the personalities of players, and that's something you said,
- 5:20Speaker 3: it k It gets overlooked. It's really hard to quantify.
- 5:23Speaker 3: But for me, that's why I like a guy like
- 5:25Speaker 3: Pat Murphy so much. He brings obviously a unique skill set,
- 5:29Speaker 3: being so successful at Arizona State and and now coming
- 5:33Speaker 3: off a yeah there we go that hits home coming
- 5:37Speaker 3: off the NL Manager of the Year award. He's obviously
- 5:40Speaker 3: doing something right over there. And I spent a little
- 5:43Speaker 3: time with Milwaukee. I didn't make it on the field,
- 5:45Speaker 3: but I was in the clubhouse, in the organization around
- 5:47Speaker 3: the team, and they do a really good job. I
- 5:49Speaker 3: think they have a great fan base. You know, Milwaukee
- 5:51Speaker 3: supports the sports teams very well, and for whatever reason,
- 5:55Speaker 3: I mean, Milwaukee, like you said, has been able to
- 5:57Speaker 3: figure it out. And I would imagine in a division
- 6:02Speaker 3: where there's not really any teams pulling away in terms
- 6:05Speaker 3: of the offseason and making signings, they're still going to
- 6:09Speaker 3: be right in the mix. You know, ten ten games
- 6:10Speaker 3: about everybody else the second place teams last year. So
- 6:15Speaker 3: but I don't know. Adamis is a good player. Williams
- 6:19Speaker 3: phenomenal pitcher, phenomenal bullpen piece, good additions for the Yankees
- 6:24Speaker 3: with him. But yeah, we'll see.
- 6:27Speaker 2: It's frustrating to me, not really frustrating. It's perplexing to
- 6:31Speaker 2: me how the Brewers just keep getting away with this
- 6:33Speaker 2: because last.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Year they cut payroll.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Craig Council like pulled the rug out from everyone and
- 6:38Speaker 2: was like, see, yah, I'm going to Chicago and they.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Weren't supposed to be that good.
- 6:43Speaker 2: And then their rotation was absolutely decimated by injuries early
- 6:46Speaker 2: on in the year, and they responded by going virtually
- 6:50Speaker 2: uncontested on top of the NAL Central standings for the
- 6:53Speaker 2: entire year. And I think a lot of that has
- 6:55Speaker 2: to do with Pat Murphy. They had a really dynamic club.
- 6:57Speaker 2: What I remember about the Brewers and watching them against
- 7:00Speaker 2: the Cardinals the twenty times or whatever they played, was
- 7:03Speaker 2: they were just so athletic and they got on base
- 7:06Speaker 2: and they ran, and I think that's some old school
- 7:09Speaker 2: baseball from Pat Murphy there. They definitely had the pieces
- 7:11Speaker 2: to do it. Like I said, a lot of the
- 7:13Speaker 2: names on the forty man roster or the projected opening
- 7:16Speaker 2: day roster aren't like household names. There aren't guys that
- 7:18Speaker 2: you like, pay a ticket to go see Like again,
- 7:21Speaker 2: Joey Orts is a good player, But if you're not
- 7:24Speaker 2: a Brewers fan, you're not throwing your money to go
- 7:26Speaker 2: watch Joey Orts play. But that's what the Brewers do
- 7:29Speaker 2: really well, and they consistently get away with it. So yes,
- 7:32Speaker 2: it's if you're a Milwaukee Brewers fan. It is definitely
- 7:37Speaker 2: really tough to see Willie Domas and Devin Williams go,
- 7:40Speaker 2: but you can take some comfort in knowing ay, the
- 7:42Speaker 2: rest of the division hasn't done that much either, and
- 7:45Speaker 2: b the Brewers are still the favorites because of their
- 7:47Speaker 2: track record over the last four years.
- 7:50Speaker 1: It's athleticism.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Man, When you have a roster like the Brewers last year,
- 7:55Speaker 2: you can win a lot of ball games in ways
- 7:57Speaker 2: that a lot of people don't really think. So that's
- 7:59Speaker 2: a that's the Brewers. Hopefully Brewers fans have more things
- 8:03Speaker 2: to talk about. Feel like they're very similar with the Cardinals.
- 8:06Speaker 2: But one team that's had a lot to talk about,
- 8:09Speaker 2: especially lately, the Chicago Cubs. And yes, I know this
- 8:13Speaker 2: is a Cardinals podcast, but we have to give credit
- 8:15Speaker 2: where credit is due.
- 8:17Speaker 1: I think the Cubs have had a good off season
- 8:19Speaker 1: so far.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yes, they traded Cody Bellinger, but that was something that
- 8:22Speaker 2: I think was kind of expected that they were going
- 8:23Speaker 2: to do, and they did it relatively early. But more
- 8:27Speaker 2: if you're looking at not the Pirates hold on the Cubs,
- 8:31Speaker 2: they had the big trade of obviously acquiring Kyle Tucker,
- 8:34Speaker 2: and even though this trade is not official yet, they
- 8:37Speaker 2: did a trade for Ryan Presley as well. They signed
- 8:40Speaker 2: Matt Boyd some rotation depth piece, and Ezac Partis has
- 8:45Speaker 2: gone as well part of that Kyle Tucker trade. So
- 8:48Speaker 2: looking at the Cubs roster right now, I like the
- 8:51Speaker 2: Cubs rotation. Here's my confession. I'm a huge Showda girl.
- 8:56Speaker 1: He's arguably maybe.
- 8:57Speaker 2: My favorite picture at least in the National League in
- 9:00Speaker 2: the game. I think he is so fun, so dynamic.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I'm gonna check my bias because it was up to me,
- 9:05Speaker 2: he'd be number one in my power rankings. But even
- 9:08Speaker 2: with that aside, I like Justin Steele, Jamison Taion, and
- 9:12Speaker 2: I think again Matthew Boyd as at depth piece. That's
- 9:15Speaker 2: a solid rotation for the NL central. The bullpen obviously
- 9:20Speaker 2: is going to be much better with Ryan Presley potentially
- 9:22Speaker 2: being their closer. Nate Pearson's a good setup guy. And
- 9:25Speaker 2: then I'm looking at the roster here the position players,
- 9:29Speaker 2: and I'm not seeing outside of Kyle Tucker a lot
- 9:33Speaker 2: of thump. And I think that's the main concern for
- 9:37Speaker 2: the Cubs. For me is I think they have the
- 9:38Speaker 2: pitching lockdown. Kyle Tucker again, great trade. What else can
- 9:42Speaker 2: they do here to make sure that their lineup has
- 9:44Speaker 2: the offensive production that they need?
- 9:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I like I like the I like Presley a lot.
- 9:50Speaker 3: I thought that. I mean's he's no Ryan Helsley. The
- 9:53Speaker 3: Cardinals definitely win in that category. And it's not even
- 9:57Speaker 3: it's not even really close. But when you look at
- 9:59Speaker 3: their you know, when you add a guy like Presley,
- 10:03Speaker 3: he just notches everybody down another slot. And it seems
- 10:08Speaker 3: like I think they saw that maybe they were a
- 10:10Speaker 3: runner up in the in the Tanner Scott sweepstakes, and
- 10:15Speaker 3: so I'm I'm happy that they made that addition because frankly,
- 10:18Speaker 3: they kind of needed it and the need they needed it,
- 10:22Speaker 3: and they have a young prospect that I'm excited to
- 10:24Speaker 3: watch pitches here. The Porter Hodge he filled in late
- 10:29Speaker 3: in the late in the late innings last year, and
- 10:32Speaker 3: so giving him a guy like that that's really their
- 10:35Speaker 3: closer for the future, potentially giving him a little bit
- 10:38Speaker 3: of leeway and bringing a guy like Presley. I'm excited
- 10:41Speaker 3: for that.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Yeah, and again, it's not like the Cubs are going
- 10:46Speaker 2: to be bad. I think the way that the rosters
- 10:48Speaker 2: are constructed from all five teams right now, the Cubs
- 10:50Speaker 2: would maybe have the advantage. They are still in the
- 10:52Speaker 2: mix for Alex Bregman from what we've seen on the reporting.
- 10:55Speaker 2: If they happened to land both Tucker and Bregman, then
- 10:59Speaker 2: I think they automatically go to number one in our
- 11:02Speaker 2: power rankings, and that'd be a huge addition for them.
- 11:04Speaker 2: You're suddenly not worried about the offense all that much anymore.
- 11:06Speaker 2: And look, it's not like guys like Dancy Swanton and
- 11:08Speaker 2: Nico Horner can't produce.
- 11:10Speaker 1: They can.
- 11:10Speaker 2: It's just slug matters so much in the game now
- 11:14Speaker 2: and to have that reliant on Kyle Tucker is not
- 11:18Speaker 2: my favorite thing in the world.
- 11:19Speaker 1: I do think the Cubs have.
- 11:20Speaker 2: A pretty underrated player in Pete crow Armstrong. I think
- 11:24Speaker 2: he got a little bit of love last season, but
- 11:26Speaker 2: my prediction for the Chicago Cubs is that he will
- 11:29Speaker 2: break out next year, But I mentioned to see what
- 11:31Speaker 2: the Cubs do up until our opening day at least,
- 11:35Speaker 2: because I do think that they are players for Alex Bregman.
- 11:38Speaker 1: So we'll see.
- 11:38Speaker 2: And they've been active, right you said it, Tanner Scott,
- 11:41Speaker 2: they were runner ups. They've definitely tried to spend. I
- 11:44Speaker 2: think they're in a similar place with the Cardinals on
- 11:47Speaker 2: their payroll, but they've certainly done a much better job
- 11:49Speaker 2: of spending, considering the Cardinals haven't spent at all. So
- 11:53Speaker 2: I'm not out on the Cubs, I think so far.
- 11:56Speaker 2: And we'll get to the Reds and the Pirates. The
- 11:57Speaker 2: Cubs have had a pretty formidable off season and have
- 12:00Speaker 2: certainly done enough to increase.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Their chances to win the division.
- 12:03Speaker 2: If you are an organization like the Chicago Cubs, so
- 12:05Speaker 2: much history, you play in a great city, you should
- 12:08Speaker 2: be trying to win as often as possible. So Jeed Hoyer,
- 12:11Speaker 2: I think has done a nice job so far in
- 12:14Speaker 2: his building. For the twenty twenty five roster coming up,
- 12:17Speaker 2: we have maybe the most terrifying part of the job.
- 12:20Speaker 2: We have to hear from our friends at HelloFresh. So
- 12:23Speaker 2: let's see what they have to say.

- 13:57Speaker 1: I love HelloFresh.
- 13:58Speaker 3: It is, it's nice. We had to cook some some
- 14:01Speaker 3: things too. We give some mess instructions.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know, when you're on the road
- 14:04Speaker 2: all the time. I'm I okay, Look, I live across
- 14:07Speaker 2: the street from a grocery store, so it's really.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Not that difficult.
- 14:09Speaker 2: But just to come home and have something in my
- 14:11Speaker 2: fridge and it's healthy and it's good game changer, so
- 14:15Speaker 2: big hello fresh people over here.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Okay, let's get back to it. Let's talk about the Reds.
- 14:20Speaker 1: They're interesting.
- 14:21Speaker 2: At the end of the twenty twenty four season, they
- 14:23Speaker 2: canned David Bell. They brought in Terry Francona, So that
- 14:26Speaker 2: was already I thought exciting or interesting because I didn't
- 14:29Speaker 2: really know where Terry Francona stood on returning to managing.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Obviously a very.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Accomplished manager, very respected throughout the game, and as someone
- 14:37Speaker 2: who doesn't watch a lot of American League Baseball, I
- 14:39Speaker 2: didn't really get a chance to see what he did
- 14:41Speaker 2: and how he managed with the Guardians. So I'm excited
- 14:44Speaker 2: to see how that changes how the Reds play next year.
- 14:47Speaker 2: This year, whatever, they made some key ads early on.
- 14:50Speaker 2: They got Brady Singer from the Royals in a trade
- 14:53Speaker 2: that sent Johnathan India to Kansas City. They resigned Nick
- 14:56Speaker 2: Martinez and traded for Gavin Lux. Losing India I think
- 15:00Speaker 2: is not as big of a deal as it might
- 15:04Speaker 2: seem because they have so much infield depth. Looking at
- 15:08Speaker 2: the Reds Now, I think what plagued them early in
- 15:11Speaker 2: the year was they just got slammed with injuries. So
- 15:13Speaker 2: you're looking at guys these young players like Spencer Steer,
- 15:17Speaker 2: Matt McClain, nouelbe Marte is back from his suspension, Ellie
- 15:21Speaker 2: de la Cruz, Christian and Cardosian Strand. These are all
- 15:25Speaker 2: players that I think have really high ceilings. But what
- 15:27Speaker 2: I like about the Reds the most is their rotation.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Hunter Green is a dude, Brady Singer will slot right
- 15:34Speaker 2: in there, probably number two, and then you have Nick
- 15:36Speaker 2: Martinez for the experience.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Andrew Abbott is a guy. Graham Ashcraft. I swear the
- 15:41Speaker 1: Cardinals see him like thirty times a year.
- 15:43Speaker 2: It's not even mathematically possible, but he pitches against them
- 15:46Speaker 2: all the time, and he's got nasty stuff.
- 15:48Speaker 1: So I always get excited about the.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Reds because I feel like they just have so many
- 15:53Speaker 2: young pieces that they will take off, but then every
- 15:56Speaker 2: year they don't. So I'm not quite sure how to
- 15:58Speaker 2: feel about them.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it looks like too with their with their infield
- 16:02Speaker 3: outfield position players. Looks like some flexibility too, which you know,
- 16:08Speaker 3: mixing a guy like Francona who's got a lot of
- 16:10Speaker 3: experience having some young flexibility, good starting rotation. Looks like
- 16:15Speaker 3: a decent, decent bullpen. There's there's some guys out there.
- 16:19Speaker 3: I'm a big fan of Amelia Pagon and I think
- 16:23Speaker 3: he can be a good leader, good veteran presence in
- 16:25Speaker 3: that bullpen. But yeah, so a mix of you know,
- 16:28Speaker 3: a veteran leader and Terry Francona and some of this
- 16:31Speaker 3: flexibility and I mean Ellie Day Ellie Day La Cruz
- 16:36Speaker 3: is so fun to watch, what a what a cool player.
- 16:38Speaker 3: And we still have all these free agents a bit available. Ky,
- 16:41Speaker 3: we're gonna have to like maybe recap on this or
- 16:43Speaker 3: re up our review in a couple of weeks.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Well that's gonna be timely because the Cardinals probably still
- 16:50Speaker 2: won't have done anything, so we're gonna need new material.
- 16:52Speaker 2: So when we run back this exact same episode in
- 16:54Speaker 2: three weeks, just just roll with it.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Part two to an update. Yeah, I like the Reds.
- 16:59Speaker 1: I like what you said their versatility.
- 17:01Speaker 2: They certainly have the lineup to essentially roll out two
- 17:04Speaker 2: different types depending on your opposing starter. And again, versatility
- 17:08Speaker 2: depth that all comes into especially this day and age
- 17:11Speaker 2: and the way the game is played now that translates
- 17:13Speaker 2: to wins.
- 17:13Speaker 1: The Brewers do a good job of this, So.
- 17:16Speaker 2: I'm cautiously optimistic about the Reds and we'll see. And
- 17:21Speaker 2: another thing about that that playing in Cincinnati is you're
- 17:23Speaker 2: basically playing in this miniature ballpark.
- 17:26Speaker 1: So even if you have like average power. Those balls
- 17:28Speaker 1: are gonna fly.
- 17:29Speaker 2: So I'm not I'm again cautiously in on Cincinnati. Let
- 17:33Speaker 2: me tell you an organization I'm caught like, not in
- 17:35Speaker 2: at all.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I'm I'm sorry.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Every year I want to get excited about the Pirates,
- 17:42Speaker 2: and they have a fantastic rotation.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Paul Skeens, we.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Know what he is, Mitch Keller, Jared Jones, these are
- 17:48Speaker 2: guys that people should get behind. Bailey Falters done some
- 17:51Speaker 2: nice work, and Johann Oviedo former Cardinals, should be a
- 17:54Speaker 2: contender for that fifth spot. And with all due respect
- 17:58Speaker 2: to Andrew McCutcheon, who I am a huge fan of
- 18:01Speaker 2: even growing up as a teenager in college.
- 18:03Speaker 1: I love watching Angel McCutcheon.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Nothing really else in that on that roster excites me. Yes,
- 18:09Speaker 2: I think O'Neil Cruz and Kabrian Hayes are extreme talents
- 18:12Speaker 2: and I like watching them play baseball, But this is
- 18:14Speaker 2: not a roster I can get excited about.
- 18:16Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Their day is still coming, that's for sure. They very
- 18:23Speaker 3: much have committed to the draft and development phase of
- 18:26Speaker 3: building an organization, and they just happened to be stuck
- 18:29Speaker 3: there for a little while. But maybe Paul Skeens is
- 18:32Speaker 3: the light. Maybe he's a crack in the surface, and
- 18:36Speaker 3: maybe this year we'll see some young studs start to emerge.
- 18:41Speaker 1: I hope.
- 18:41Speaker 2: So I will say I like going a panc park.
- 18:45Speaker 2: It's a very picturesque ballpark. I love the little bar
- 18:48Speaker 2: across the street called Redbeards.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Fantastic. I've never had a bad night at Red Beards.
- 18:52Speaker 2: But what was so cool is after you go to
- 18:55Speaker 2: these Cardinals Pirates games and you're in Pittsburgh for seven
- 18:59Speaker 2: to eight games the year, you get accustomed to the
- 19:01Speaker 2: kind of environment there. You're talking like eight ten thousand fans.
- 19:04Speaker 2: If it's a day game, forget about it. It's an
- 19:06Speaker 2: empty ballpark. But I was in Pittsburgh in August for
- 19:09Speaker 2: a Paul Skeene's home start on a Tuesday night, and
- 19:13Speaker 2: it was electric. It was like a two to one
- 19:16Speaker 2: ball game. Skins is about to go into the nine
- 19:18Speaker 2: for the first time, and the Cardinals did win, but
- 19:22Speaker 2: that crowd was invested in every single pitch, and I
- 19:26Speaker 2: got me thinking like, this could be Pirates baseball because
- 19:29Speaker 2: the fans will show up. I mean, Paul Skans. Even
- 19:31Speaker 2: if you're a casual sports fan in general, you're gonna
- 19:34Speaker 2: go on to pay to see that. But watching the
- 19:36Speaker 2: city show up on a Tuesday night, the stands were
- 19:38Speaker 2: all black and yellow. It was a really fun atmosphere
- 19:41Speaker 2: that I hadn't seen at P and C Park in August,
- 19:43Speaker 2: maybe ever on this job.
- 19:44Speaker 1: So I want that for Pittsburgh.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I want them to be that excited fan base where
- 19:49Speaker 2: you go out and you pack the house on a Tuesday,
- 19:50Speaker 2: that's when baseball is at its best. I just think
- 19:53Speaker 2: they're a little far from that.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Yeah, when Andrew McCutchen is your key signing of the
- 20:00Speaker 3: off season. Andrew Cutch is great, like you said, great player,
- 20:04Speaker 3: great human being, but he is far from his prime.
- 20:08Speaker 3: So it would be nice. I mean, if we could
- 20:09Speaker 3: relive the glory days, go back to your high school years, Katie,
- 20:12Speaker 3: and get that Pirates roster, I think we have a
- 20:16Speaker 3: lot more excited. That'd be a more exciting roster to
- 20:19Speaker 3: have behind a guy like Paul Skins than we're what
- 20:22Speaker 3: we're looking at right now.
- 20:23Speaker 2: It's just if their game plan is that their starting
- 20:27Speaker 2: rotation and their bullpen.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Their bullpen is not bad.
- 20:29Speaker 2: I know David Benner had a down hear there is
- 20:31Speaker 2: this believer and I'm like fifty percent sure. I'm saying
- 20:34Speaker 2: his name right, Carmen Litzinski. He's nasty. If he's on
- 20:38Speaker 2: a higher like a bigger team, bigger market, we're talking
- 20:41Speaker 2: about him, he's I think a very underrated piece. I
- 20:44Speaker 2: remember he came out and just threw gas and walked
- 20:47Speaker 2: into Olie Marml's office and he was like, what the
- 20:49Speaker 2: heck was that talking about the reliever.
- 20:51Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, I don't know, he was. He was disgusting.
- 20:54Speaker 2: So I don't want to be a true, like a
- 20:56Speaker 2: total Pirates hater. But if their plan is to essentially
- 21:00Speaker 2: their pitching staff allowed two runs a game and they
- 21:02Speaker 2: win three two, that's sure, because I don't think they
- 21:06Speaker 2: have an offense that's going to give them anything more
- 21:08Speaker 2: than that.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Well, I guess we have to see if the Cardinals
- 21:14Speaker 3: can do more than that also, So yeah, you're.
- 21:16Speaker 2: All right about that.
- 21:20Speaker 1: That's my biggest question for the Cardinals.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Obviously we're not going to preview them here because we
- 21:24Speaker 2: preview them every episode. But I'm torn on this. The
- 21:29Speaker 2: Cardinals won eighty three games last year with the second
- 21:32Speaker 2: worst offense in the National League. They were right around
- 21:35Speaker 2: the same as the Miami Marlins, which is hard to do.
- 21:37Speaker 2: It's actually impressive to be that bad.
- 21:40Speaker 1: But again, they won eighty three games. They did that
- 21:43Speaker 1: half with an electric bullpen.
- 21:44Speaker 2: We've talked a lot about the Hellsley Kitchridge, Jojo Romeril Combo,
- 21:47Speaker 2: and I think Olie Marmel, Dusty Blake, the bullpen catchers
- 21:50Speaker 2: did a wonderful job and that cohesiveness in the bullpen
- 21:53Speaker 2: and making sure that these guys were used effectively. But
- 21:56Speaker 2: if the Cardinals hit just a little better, if they
- 21:58Speaker 2: hit league average, I think they win five to six
- 22:02Speaker 2: more games, and all of a sudden, you're talking about rivalry,
- 22:04Speaker 2: and you know, the Brewers the top of the division
- 22:07Speaker 2: or maybe even sneaking into that wildcard spot. So do
- 22:11Speaker 2: I think the Cardinals can contend in the division?
- 22:14Speaker 1: I do.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Do I understand fans frustrations that competing in the NAL
- 22:17Speaker 2: Central is not like competing for a legit World Series.
- 22:19Speaker 2: I do, and I agree with you. But I think
- 22:22Speaker 2: with the expanded playoffs, you've seen a lot of teams
- 22:24Speaker 2: this division, in particular, hoping that eighty five wins will
- 22:28Speaker 2: get you in, and in years past it has most
- 22:31Speaker 2: of the time. So the Cardinals are not my pick
- 22:34Speaker 2: to win the division. That's not to say that I
- 22:36Speaker 2: don't believe that they can compete in it.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Again, I do, but my pick, I'm torn.
- 22:42Speaker 2: I'm gonna go Brewers because they have the track record
- 22:47Speaker 2: and it's been their division since twenty twenty one. Really,
- 22:50Speaker 2: but I would not be surprised Cardinals fans don't habe
- 22:53Speaker 2: if the Cubs make a legitimate run with the way
- 22:55Speaker 2: that the rosters stand currently as of today, is this.
- 22:59Speaker 3: My turn is? But is this my turn to pick?
- 23:01Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 23:01Speaker 2: Before people like start turning off the camera because I
- 23:03Speaker 2: said Cubs.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Well, the Cubs do make a compelling argument. I'm mainly
- 23:09Speaker 3: because I'm a big fan of Kyle Tucker. Watching him
- 23:11Speaker 3: in Houston. He is insane. I mean, he's like the
- 23:14Speaker 3: real deal, power hitting, left handed, left handed batter. But
- 23:19Speaker 3: I mean you make a good point, Katie, Like going
- 23:22Speaker 3: from the worst hitting team in the league to just
- 23:25Speaker 3: the middle of the pack. I mean that's at least
- 23:27Speaker 3: five games, maybe more. Maybe the Cardinals do have a chance.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Maybe we should listen to these this this excitement that
- 23:33Speaker 3: that's around the team. Maybe I'm gonna go with the Cardinals.
- 23:36Speaker 3: We're winning we're winning the division this year, Katie. I'm
- 23:38Speaker 3: riding I'm riding this this positive train. I'm not getting
- 23:43Speaker 3: off it. This is only the second week since I've
- 23:45Speaker 3: gotten on it. So I have to remain on the
- 23:48Speaker 3: positive train. The Cardinals, We're gonna make this adjustment. We
- 23:50Speaker 3: got a new hitting coach, got some new philosophies. Jordan Walker.
- 23:55Speaker 3: This is his year. You'll that. I mean, you're dreaming
- 23:58Speaker 3: about that every single night, right, I mean, so yeah,
- 24:03Speaker 3: let's go. We're gonna We're gonna surprise some people.
- 24:06Speaker 2: All right. So you lasted much longer on the positivity
- 24:09Speaker 2: trade than I did. I think I lasted three days.
- 24:10Speaker 2: And to be clear, I'm not like negative. I'm not
- 24:13Speaker 2: going into Jupiter like, oh my gosh, blowed this place up.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Of course not.
- 24:16Speaker 2: I'm just trying to be objective and reasonable. But uh,
- 24:21Speaker 2: there has to be a good cop bad cop. So
- 24:22Speaker 2: I'll gladly for this role.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Again.
- 24:26Speaker 2: I don't think it's impossible, but a lot of things
- 24:28Speaker 2: have to go right. It's a lot of ifs, it's
- 24:31Speaker 2: a lot of players taking a step up. It's if
- 24:33Speaker 2: Jordan Walker hits the way that they think he does,
- 24:35Speaker 2: if Nolan Gorman can get that Shrek out right down,
- 24:37Speaker 2: if Lars new Bark can stay healthy, if our starting
- 24:39Speaker 2: pitching prospects pan out, then we'll have a shot. It's
- 24:42Speaker 2: a lot of ifs, but there are a lot of
- 24:44Speaker 2: ifs on the four other teams as well. So I've
- 24:48Speaker 2: long named the NL Central the the UH Division of Mediocre,
- 24:53Speaker 2: and I hope I'm wrong, but I will say I
- 24:56Speaker 2: think it'll be compelling baseball in the division because all
- 24:59Speaker 2: these teams currently constructed look like they could be like
- 25:01Speaker 2: eighty wins, eighty five wins on a good one, but
- 25:04Speaker 2: also like seventy losses. I'm sorry, seventy five wins if
- 25:09Speaker 2: they have like the reverse effect of their season.
- 25:11Speaker 1: So I just don't know.
- 25:12Speaker 2: I don't know anything.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Trevor's that's what we should get out of this episode.
- 25:15Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 25:16Speaker 3: You know, Katy, you know more than me, but I
- 25:19Speaker 3: get the benefit of the doubt. I'm not the pro here.
- 25:21Speaker 3: You've been doing this, You've been digging in deep for
- 25:24Speaker 3: a long time, and I agree. I mean, Chicago on paper,
- 25:29Speaker 3: they look pretty good. So we're gonna have our work
- 25:32Speaker 3: cut out for us. But that's what the season's for.
- 25:37Speaker 2: It'll be fun and soon we will have everyday baseball action.
- 25:41Speaker 2: And I am excited, honestly to go to spring training
- 25:44Speaker 2: and see where each player is at. You know, we
- 25:46Speaker 2: talked to most of them at winter warm up, but
- 25:48Speaker 2: it's different when you walk into Roger Dean and that
- 25:50Speaker 2: clubhouse that they still haven't remodeled that's allegedly coming and
- 25:55Speaker 2: just kind of seeing those guys so their first bullpens
- 25:57Speaker 2: and seeing it's like a different.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Kind of mentality.
- 26:00Speaker 2: So excited to see the position battles, Excited to see
- 26:03Speaker 2: how a lot of the young guys I think are
- 26:04Speaker 2: going to be forming the bullpen, and that to me
- 26:07Speaker 2: is exciting because I think that's where the most opportunity
- 26:09Speaker 2: is is for these young players, is the bullpen.
- 26:12Speaker 1: So we'll see how it goes from there.
- 26:14Speaker 2: And you know what, when we do this exact same
- 26:17Speaker 2: episode in four weeks, because things will have undoudly changed,
- 26:20Speaker 2: maybe I'll have a different opinion. Right now, I'm riding
- 26:22Speaker 2: with the Brewers and your team, Cardinals, you're a good form.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Are we going to see Aeronado in spring training? What's
- 26:29Speaker 3: your Have you shifted?
- 26:30Speaker 1: No? I still think we're going to see him.
- 26:32Speaker 3: I think we're going to see it.
- 26:33Speaker 2: I just don't see Alex Bregman's siding before spring training starts.
- 26:37Speaker 2: And you know, obviously we know Scott Boris does not
- 26:40Speaker 2: mind taking negotiations until late February early March. He's been
- 26:43Speaker 2: the best for his client. I don't know comments there,
- 26:47Speaker 2: but yeah, and I don't think that's going to be
- 26:49Speaker 2: good for anyone because what it absolutely is going to do,
- 26:51Speaker 2: it's gonna put Nolan in a bad spot. The Cardinals
- 26:53Speaker 2: have tried to trade him for four months and now
- 26:56Speaker 2: he has to come to Jupiter after Moe has said
- 27:00Speaker 2: multiple times how much he does not want him here,
- 27:02Speaker 2: and he's gonna have.
- 27:03Speaker 1: To answer a bunch of tough questions.
- 27:04Speaker 2: And I think no one just wants to play baseball,
- 27:07Speaker 2: So wouldn't be the best case scenario for anyone involved, team, player,
- 27:13Speaker 2: you name it. But I still think we'll see him now.
- 27:15Speaker 2: The question for me is will he be here at
- 27:17Speaker 2: the end of spring training, And that's where I think
- 27:19Speaker 2: we'll have a different answer.
- 27:20Speaker 1: But again, the Nolan's.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Situation, despite having zero traction, my opinion changes on it
- 27:24Speaker 2: all the time, so I'm sure next week I have
- 27:26Speaker 2: a completely different aspect on.
- 27:27Speaker 5: It, for sure.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Well, what about what about Wilson Contraras. So this thought
- 27:33Speaker 3: came to my mind recently. Was it last year or
- 27:37Speaker 3: the year before where they said, oh, Contras is not
- 27:40Speaker 3: catching anymore, he's playing first base, and then a few
- 27:42Speaker 3: weeks after that he was catching again. What are the
- 27:44Speaker 3: chances we see Wilson Contrasts behind the plate this year? Oh?
- 27:49Speaker 2: See when I asked Mo that in November and he
- 27:52Speaker 2: said close to zero and paraphrasing, but it was clear
- 27:55Speaker 2: that that wasn't a plan for him. So he's gonna
- 27:58Speaker 2: bring his gear just in case. That's what he said
- 28:00Speaker 2: at winter warm up. But I think it would have
- 28:03Speaker 2: things have to go seriously wrong for us to the
- 28:05Speaker 2: Controrasts behind the plate.
- 28:08Speaker 1: But you can't pretty ball.
- 28:09Speaker 2: As we know, because I would not have expected Wilson
- 28:11Speaker 2: Contraras to be moved to first base five weeks into
- 28:14Speaker 2: his Cardinal's tenure when they signed him for eighty seven
- 28:17Speaker 2: million dollars to catch.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's fun.
- 28:20Speaker 2: It's always fun covering this organization and figuring out what
- 28:22Speaker 2: exactly they're doing.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Well, we throw Aeronauto in the mix, and this is
- 28:26Speaker 3: why I was thinking of it. If Aeronauda is taking
- 28:28Speaker 3: up the spot at third base, and they want to
- 28:29Speaker 3: get somebody else in playing time. And then all of
- 28:32Speaker 3: a sudden, you know, maybe it looks appealing to put
- 28:34Speaker 3: Contrasts back behind the plate to open up first base
- 28:37Speaker 3: for another player.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Well, that's what I thought was going to happen in
- 28:41Speaker 2: the first place. I thought Alec Burlson when the Cardinals
- 28:43Speaker 2: told Paul Goalshmi at the end of the year they
- 28:45Speaker 2: weren't going to bring him back. I thought Burlson was
- 28:46Speaker 2: going to take over a first base And I know
- 28:48Speaker 2: that Burley is a bat first guy, but first base
- 28:52Speaker 2: seems the most logical position for him other than DH
- 28:55Speaker 2: And then Conturers moved to first base, and I was like,
- 28:59Speaker 2: what does.
- 28:59Speaker 1: That mean for Burlison?
- 29:00Speaker 2: And this goes back to last last week's episode where
- 29:03Speaker 2: there are just so many supplementary pieces and not a
- 29:07Speaker 2: clear way to use them consistently. That's another thing I'll
- 29:11Speaker 2: be monitoring in spring training. And look at you, Trevor,
- 29:13Speaker 2: getting me excited to go back to work.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Well, my last question is what is the issue with
- 29:18Speaker 3: Cantras's behind the plane? Like he seems from my perspective,
- 29:21Speaker 3: like a guy that I would want to throw to,
- 29:23Speaker 3: Like he seems like a pretty good catcher.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Well he's a gamer, right, But the big thing that
- 29:27Speaker 2: for the Cardinals and for Wilson was prolonging his health.
- 29:31Speaker 2: So in May last year we saw the incident where
- 29:34Speaker 2: he broke his hand out stretching to receive the ball
- 29:37Speaker 2: without six eight weeks and then was heard again on
- 29:40Speaker 2: hip being hit by pitch. That's more of a freak accident.
- 29:42Speaker 2: As Contrarast gets into his mid thirties, they want him
- 29:46Speaker 2: to stay as healthy as possible. Having two young catchers
- 29:49Speaker 2: and Evon Herrera and Pedro Pahaz made them more comfortable
- 29:51Speaker 2: in moving him to first base.
- 29:53Speaker 1: They really like Contraras's.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Bat in the lineup, and we saw it last year
- 29:57Speaker 2: when he was injured that offense really took a die
- 30:00Speaker 2: if it was not good.
- 30:01Speaker 1: So it's twofold. It allows better.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Uh more consistent playing time for Paz and Herrera, but
- 30:06Speaker 2: it also should keep Contraras, or at least they hope
- 30:09Speaker 2: it will keep him more healthy.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Look, there are a lot of things to get into.
- 30:13Speaker 2: When we actually get to pictures and catchers and looking
- 30:16Speaker 2: at rosters and position battles, we'll see we will see.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Just I just picture that we're going to walk up.
- 30:22Speaker 3: You're gonna walk up to the six pack on day
- 30:25Speaker 3: one of spring training and Quinn Matthews is going to
- 30:27Speaker 3: be throwing a bullpen to Wilson Contrera's and you're just
- 30:30Speaker 3: gonna have to throw all your notes out the window.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Nothing will compare to when I think it was twenty
- 30:37Speaker 2: twenty two. The lockout had just ended, but we were
- 30:39Speaker 2: already there for the minor league camp. So they opened
- 30:42Speaker 2: the complex for us, and the first day of like
- 30:44Speaker 2: everyone reporting, and no one's had any talk with any
- 30:47Speaker 2: players because they couldn't during the lockout. If you were
- 30:50Speaker 2: medical personnel from the team, you could not talk to
- 30:52Speaker 2: the players. And I look at the little chart, you
- 30:54Speaker 2: know how they stapleed the schedule to the wall, and
- 30:56Speaker 2: I'm looking at every picture and I don't see Jack
- 30:58Speaker 2: Flaherty and I was like, okay. So I go walking
- 31:02Speaker 2: in the office and I get a bunch of non
- 31:05Speaker 2: answers is what I call them, And I was like, oh,
- 31:06Speaker 2: you guys are bad liars.
- 31:08Speaker 1: And what do we find out? The next day?
- 31:09Speaker 2: Jack Clarty and Alex Rays are hurt, and it's news
- 31:12Speaker 2: to the Cardinals because they had no idea because they
- 31:14Speaker 2: couldn't really talk to him, and nothing surprises me anymore
- 31:17Speaker 2: after that. Really, it's you're never bored covering major League baseball.
- 31:21Speaker 2: You are never bored, especially covering the Saint Louis Cardinals,
- 31:24Speaker 2: and I'm lucky to do so, and I'm lucky to
- 31:26Speaker 2: hang out with you.
- 31:27Speaker 1: This is the best part.
- 31:27Speaker 3: Hey, same here, Katie. I feel the same way. I'm
- 31:30Speaker 3: getting more and more excited about this every single day,
- 31:33Speaker 3: and especially I mean, once we have some like baseball
- 31:36Speaker 3: to cover, I'm going to be more excited. So it's
- 31:39Speaker 3: been a pleasure. Thank you. Thank you for considering me
- 31:43Speaker 3: for this too. I mean, you've had on some great
- 31:45Speaker 3: guests when I'm not here, but I feel lucky. I'm
- 31:48Speaker 3: the regular, and I feel fortunate that you thought of
- 31:51Speaker 3: me for this to help you out. O.
- 31:53Speaker 2: No, it's because, like I said, I told you this before.
- 31:55Speaker 2: We follow each other on Instagram and you're always doing podcasts.
- 31:57Speaker 2: I'm an avid Instagram story watcher and listening to your stuff,
- 32:01Speaker 2: I was like, Oh, this guy can bring it. And
- 32:03Speaker 2: I don't have any experience as a major league pitture obviously,
- 32:06Speaker 2: and I think that's so valuable when you're talking about
- 32:08Speaker 2: the game Look, I can sit here and give you
- 32:10Speaker 2: the reasoning behind a transaction or a pitchy move or
- 32:13Speaker 2: playing time, but you can offer real time experience that
- 32:16Speaker 2: I cannot. And it's I'm so excited when we have
- 32:19Speaker 2: actual games to break down to hear your perspective on
- 32:21Speaker 2: a decision or how a player handles something. See now, okay,
- 32:26Speaker 2: I'm in a better mood, better attitude. Now you have
- 32:28Speaker 2: me pumped up for my workout because both this is
- 32:30Speaker 2: a healthy podcast here on Cardinal Territory. Both Trevor and
- 32:33Speaker 2: I are going to the gym after this because we're
- 32:35Speaker 2: healthy and we're fit, right, and.

- 32:39Speaker 3: end our day before we get our recovery.
