- 0:00Speaker 1: I commend, I really do.
- 0:02Speaker 2: I commend the ESPN guys for I think properly explaining
- 0:08Speaker 2: the difference between being ranked and we the slot you
- 0:12Speaker 2: would go into into the bracket, at least in the
- 0:15Speaker 2: early stages anyway, I think those who haven't picked it
- 0:17Speaker 2: up will figure it out over time. But like, for example,
- 0:21Speaker 2: Ohio State is number two in the rankings, but based
- 0:25Speaker 2: on where things are today, if the playoff were to
- 0:27Speaker 2: start this week, they'd be in the five position because
- 0:31Speaker 2: Oregon would be higher than them and would be the
- 0:36Speaker 2: Big Ten champ at this point. But again, there's more
- 0:39Speaker 2: football to be played there. The same thing holds down
- 0:42Speaker 2: and slide down, and I know it gets a little confusing.
- 0:45Speaker 2: If folks were to look at their bracket, they put
- 0:48Speaker 2: their AP ranking right beside their name, but they put
- 0:52Speaker 2: where they would be in the bracket out on the
- 0:54Speaker 2: left edge, which is a little easier to see anyway.
- 0:56Speaker 2: But according to their bracket, the Loghorns, Texas was five
- 1:01Speaker 2: in the College Football Playoff rankings, but because there were
- 1:04Speaker 2: two Big Ten schools ahead of them, one that would
- 1:08Speaker 2: be Ohio State, would slot into number five. In Oregon
- 1:10Speaker 2: of course number four, so that would push Texas down
- 1:13Speaker 2: one slot to six, where in the first bracket they'd
- 1:17Speaker 2: face Alabama in Austin the eleven seed.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Talk about an electric opening round on the College Football Playoff.
- 1:24Speaker 3: I'm okay, rather not face Jilling Milroe in Alabama the
- 1:27Speaker 3: first round if.
- 1:29Speaker 1: You could avoid that, Yeah, be all right.
- 1:31Speaker 2: That's why I say, you know, for all the people
- 1:32Speaker 2: say maybe it's a better idea just to go ahead
- 1:34Speaker 2: and play.
- 1:35Speaker 3: No.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I understand the sentiment about saying being in the five slot,
- 1:40Speaker 2: you played the weakest. Probably a G five, although if
- 1:43Speaker 2: you've seen boys he play, if they wind up as
- 1:45Speaker 2: the twelve seed, you know, or Oregon, Yeah, and even
- 1:51Speaker 2: if it's not them, maybe it's a b YU. Ever,
- 1:53Speaker 2: what you wish for that's a home game, and then
- 1:56Speaker 2: you would slot into playing the number four team in
- 2:00Speaker 2: a bowl game in a neutral site. So those are
- 2:01Speaker 2: some thoughts about that, but we'll see where it goes forward.
- 2:05Speaker 2: If you win your conference and you're one of the
- 2:07Speaker 2: power forwards, chances are you going to have a buye. Definitely,
- 2:10Speaker 2: i'd say in the case of the SEC and the
- 2:13Speaker 2: Big Ten, and definitely the AEC if it's Miami. Beyond that,
- 2:19Speaker 2: no guarantees yet, with regard to the Big Twelve or
- 2:22Speaker 2: the ACC depending on what happens with the rest of
- 2:26Speaker 2: their regular seasons and how Boyse State finishes the season
- 2:29Speaker 2: as well. I think it's important to keep all of
- 2:32Speaker 2: that in mind. All right, let's hear some more from
- 2:33Speaker 2: long Warts head coach Steve Sarkesian ask for injury updates
- 2:37Speaker 2: now on Isaiah Bond and Andrew mccoba's this week progresses.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Yeah, they both have had a good week so far.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Okay, So that means that they would you would project
- 2:46Speaker 2: that they would be able to play. Jermaine Lelay is
- 2:51Speaker 2: probably going to make his first collegiate start. He's going
- 2:54Speaker 2: to have to start or he's going to have to
- 2:57Speaker 2: play more snaps, let's put it that way in the
- 3:00Speaker 2: first half. Because Vernon Broughton, due to the targeting call
- 3:04Speaker 2: in the second half and the fourth quarter against Vanderbilt,
- 3:06Speaker 2: is gonna have to sit out the first half of
- 3:07Speaker 2: the game. So uh, sark was asked what Germaine Lila
- 3:12Speaker 2: brings to the table with Broughton do to sit out
- 3:14Speaker 2: the first half.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Well, we're gonna need, you know, the complete player in Germaine.
- 3:19Speaker 5: You know, the Floria has got a really physical offensive line,
- 3:22Speaker 5: their physical running football team. So first and foremost, you know,
- 3:26Speaker 5: our ability to stop the run is going to be
- 3:27Speaker 5: critical Saturday, and he's got to play a big part
- 3:31Speaker 5: in that.
- 3:32Speaker 2: He is expecting, obviously Vernon Broughton to be ready to
- 3:35Speaker 2: go the second half. And wasn't it Monday at the
- 3:39Speaker 2: press conference cam where Sark was asked?
- 3:43Speaker 1: I think it was I'm trying, I'm trying to remember
- 3:46Speaker 1: who it was to ask.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I think it was anwar Richardson who asked Sark, I'm curious,
- 3:52Speaker 2: does he go through like regular practice reps and warm
- 3:56Speaker 2: up reps and all that other kind of stuff when
- 3:59Speaker 2: you're when he has to sit out the first half
- 4:01Speaker 2: of the game. Was it Danny Davis? I mean we
- 4:03Speaker 2: were in Las Vegas. I could Delfrid sure was listening.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Whoever was that asked him? It's a good question, and
- 4:09Speaker 2: Sark even said it was a good question, but he said,
- 4:11Speaker 2: Vernon's going through regular work, so lolay will would step
- 4:16Speaker 2: into that slot at least for a lot of the snaps.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I do have regular rotation in the interior part of
- 4:21Speaker 2: the defensive line. Remember when Velton Gardner transferred in from
- 4:25Speaker 2: s MU was listed as a fourth running back and
- 4:28Speaker 2: got some carries Hurning this season. Then he got hurned
- 4:30Speaker 2: and we had heard from him he hadn't been available.
- 4:33Speaker 1: So Sark was asked if Velton Gardner was out for
- 4:36Speaker 1: the season.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Yeah, he's out for the season. He had an eye injury.
- 4:39Speaker 2: So eye injury takes him out, So he's out for
- 4:42Speaker 2: the year. The requisite Arch Manning question. There's always going
- 4:48Speaker 2: to be this, especially by the way, and again I
- 4:54Speaker 2: did not have a chance to actually listen to the
- 4:56Speaker 2: questions coming from the reporters. Would I be right in
- 5:00Speaker 2: guessing that it was not a local reporter that asked
- 5:03Speaker 2: about Arch's development? Uh, Then that sound like something from
- 5:07Speaker 2: an out of town media source on an SEC teleconference
- 5:11Speaker 2: would ask, hey, can you bring us update?
- 5:13Speaker 1: How's how's Arch Banning? Look? I believe so, okay, you're right, Well,
- 5:17Speaker 1: you're right, okay. Uh. So Sark was asked, how has
- 5:21Speaker 1: Arch developed over the course of the season.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Arch is doing a really nice job.
- 5:25Speaker 5: You know, Gosh, we were fortunate to have him step
- 5:27Speaker 5: in the way that he did, uh for those for
- 5:29Speaker 5: those two and a half games and got some some
- 5:31Speaker 5: starts under his belt. You know, I think he continues
- 5:35Speaker 5: to work at his you know, overall understanding of what
- 5:38Speaker 5: we're doing schematically and then working on some of the
- 5:41Speaker 5: fundamentals and details that we're asking.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Okay, And then there was one other question, uh about
- 5:50Speaker 2: uh Florida, and this had to do with the Gators
- 5:56Speaker 2: being really good in terms of getting turnovers. Don't we
- 5:59Speaker 2: talked about to Vanderbilt was good in the turnover department
- 6:03Speaker 2: as well, But they're actually even in turnover ratio the
- 6:09Speaker 2: offense the defense. What they've been able to get, uh,
- 6:12Speaker 2: in terms of fumbles lost and recovered, in the interceptions
- 6:16Speaker 2: and things like that. But they've been very aggressive. And
- 6:19Speaker 2: Sark was asked not only about that about but also
- 6:21Speaker 2: about the offensive line allowing during the course of the season,
- 6:28Speaker 2: allowing twelve sacks this season, the offensive line allowing that,
- 6:32Speaker 2: and asked about Florida's ability to force turnovers.
- 6:35Speaker 5: Yeah, So, you know, I think one thing is they've
- 6:37Speaker 5: they've got a good scheme that you could see their
- 6:40Speaker 5: players have gained confidence in.
- 6:44Speaker 4: As the year has gone on.
- 6:46Speaker 5: You know, they're really physical at the line of scrimmage,
- 6:49Speaker 5: and so because of that, you know, I think they
- 6:52Speaker 5: can deploy people in the secondary from a coverage perspective
- 6:56Speaker 5: and mixed coverages and disguise coverages. But on the flip side,
- 7:01Speaker 5: they will be aggressive at times and they'll they'll pressure
- 7:03Speaker 5: you and they'll force the quarterback into some poor decisions.
- 7:06Speaker 4: And so I think they just do a good job
- 7:07Speaker 4: of of all that.
- 7:08Speaker 5: They've got quality players, they've got a good scheme that
- 7:11Speaker 5: the players have gained confidence in. But then it's them
- 7:15Speaker 5: mixing all that they do uh to force some some
- 7:18Speaker 5: some poor decisions from the quarterbacks perspective.
- 7:21Speaker 4: You know, on the offensive side of the ball.
- 7:22Speaker 5: You know, I think Billy and I are kind of
- 7:25Speaker 5: cut from a similar cloth, and that you know, he
- 7:27Speaker 5: believes in running the ball and when you when you
- 7:31Speaker 5: run it, and then you can utilize the play action
- 7:34Speaker 5: pass and you know, give your offensive line put them
- 7:37Speaker 5: in a little better positioning that that that helps you
- 7:40Speaker 5: know that they they really haven't been in games where
- 7:43Speaker 5: they've just been behind, where they've had to drop back,
- 7:45Speaker 5: drop back, drop back. You know, they've been able to
- 7:47Speaker 5: maintain some balance and again that that forces you know,
- 7:52Speaker 5: defenses to not just pin the ears back and rush
- 7:55Speaker 5: the passer, but have to defend the run and and
- 7:58Speaker 5: then they can run placks past. They can run bootlegs
- 8:01Speaker 5: and keepers and spread outs and so the launch point
- 8:04Speaker 5: can change. And so you know, I think that's you know, one,
- 8:07Speaker 5: they've got some pretty good players and big guys up front,
- 8:10Speaker 5: but two, I think, you know, because of their ability
- 8:13Speaker 5: to run the football and allows them to take some
- 8:16Speaker 5: of the pressure off that offensive line with the style
- 8:19Speaker 5: of play.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Okay, there's some comments from Sarka.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I want to go back to the college football playoff
- 8:27Speaker 2: talk a little bit. I mentioned earlier we were discussing
- 8:32Speaker 2: the possibility of of you know where teams from the
- 8:37Speaker 2: Big Ten and the SEC might fall in this, and
- 8:42Speaker 2: folks talking about the respect or lack thereof with regard.
- 8:46Speaker 1: To by you.
- 8:48Speaker 2: You're pretty much saying that's what balder dash, poppycock, horse feathers,
- 8:54Speaker 2: all that other kind of stuff, based on the fact
- 8:55Speaker 2: that they are in the bracket, and right now they'd
- 8:58Speaker 2: be number four bracket.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I mean, you could rank them twenty five and they're
- 9:03Speaker 3: still going to be the four seed because if they're
- 9:05Speaker 3: their conference champion.
- 9:06Speaker 2: As long as they're not behind a boy see, but
- 9:09Speaker 2: it'll be the top four conference champions, true, regardless of
- 9:13Speaker 2: whether you're power for or not that's that's one thing
- 9:15Speaker 2: that is kind of interesting about this. The other reason
- 9:18Speaker 2: I bring this up is because when I was talking
- 9:22Speaker 2: about one of the things about Heather Dnisch pointing out,
- 9:24Speaker 2: you know, Colorado may be in a good position this
- 9:26Speaker 2: sort of thing. She also points out and this gets
- 9:29Speaker 2: to what you were talking about earlier to loss Alabama,
- 9:32Speaker 2: and she said, the fact that Alabama is ranked ahead
- 9:35Speaker 2: of these schools Iowa State, Kansas State, and Colorado is
- 9:40Speaker 2: not a good sign for the loser of the Big
- 9:43Speaker 2: Twelve Championship game two loss A and M and LS.
- 9:47Speaker 2: You were also ranked ahead of the Big twelve secondary teams,
- 9:50Speaker 2: which indicates the Big Twelve champion is trending to be
- 9:53Speaker 2: its loan representative. The same can be said for the
- 9:56Speaker 2: ACC runner up. The ACC is in slightly better position
- 10:00Speaker 2: because SMU is right on the bubble at number thirteen.
- 10:02Speaker 2: That indicates that if Alabama were to lose Saturday to LSU,
- 10:07Speaker 2: SMU will still be lurking, though probably behind the two
- 10:11Speaker 2: loss LSU. If SMU runs the table but loses in
- 10:15Speaker 2: the ACC Championship game, it could be a debate in
- 10:17Speaker 2: the committee meeting room, depending on what happens elsewhere with
- 10:20Speaker 2: the conference runner ups, but the fact that two loss
- 10:22Speaker 2: SEC teams already have an edge should be concerning to
- 10:26Speaker 2: those leagues. And that's what I think a lot of
- 10:28Speaker 2: folks thought might happen with the expansion of the playoff
- 10:31Speaker 2: that while we refer to them as power for conferences,
- 10:37Speaker 2: at least in the case of this season so far,
- 10:41Speaker 2: it's really pretty much power too. Given what the first
- 10:46Speaker 2: reveal is. Doesn't mean it's going to finish that way
- 10:49Speaker 2: for sure, but I.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Don't see how a second ACC or a second Big
- 10:54Speaker 3: twelve team isn't a playoff r how deep the SEC
- 10:58Speaker 3: is plus Notre Dame and Le Norden has to lose
- 11:01Speaker 3: the Army, I think, and then that opens up maybe
- 11:04Speaker 3: another spot. But with how deep the SEC and Big
- 11:07Speaker 3: ten is, Craig, I think one from the Big twelve
- 11:09Speaker 3: and one from the ACC gets in.
- 11:11Speaker 2: One final note, she pointed out, because Boys he stayed
- 11:15Speaker 2: his ranked number twelve, if that continues through selection day,
- 11:17Speaker 2: the Broncos would earn that same seed and they wouldn't
- 11:21Speaker 2: have to displace a committee twelfth ranked team to make
- 11:24Speaker 2: room for the fifth highest conference champion. With Army all
- 11:27Speaker 2: the way down at number twenty five almost certainly because
- 11:29Speaker 2: of the poor schedule strength. There's a huge gap between
- 11:32Speaker 2: the Broncos and the next Group of five leader. That
- 11:34Speaker 2: could change, though, as the American Conference gets deeper into
- 11:38Speaker 2: the heart of conference play. All right, coming up, we'll
- 11:40Speaker 2: talk some more some NFL football and log worn basketball
- 11:44Speaker 2: when we continue on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
