Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: A little too much economic nimbyism going on
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: There's a form of economic nimbiism that's going on in
- 0:02Speaker 1: this country. You've probably noticed it too. If we want
- 0:05Speaker 1: to get ahead, surely we are all aware that there
- 0:10Speaker 1: must be trade offs. There's no business, no growth, no
- 0:13Speaker 1: economic miracle that comes about without a cost to someone somewhere.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Whether it's intensive agriculture that can have an effect on
- 0:20Speaker 1: the environment, whether it's water to run the data centers
- 0:24Speaker 1: that power your smartphones. Every success costs you something. Generally,
- 0:30Speaker 1: the trick is to be reasonable, take risks, mitigate them,
- 0:33Speaker 1: or just be willing to wear the costs. The problem
- 0:35Speaker 1: we have, I don't think is necessarily a lack of
- 0:37Speaker 1: opportunities of wherewithal or enthusiasm, not even in many cases investment.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I was just an Otargo, just recently beautiful place, stunning
- 0:48Speaker 1: central Otago. There's a gold mine permit that's been issued there.
- 0:51Speaker 1: You might have seen that in the news. Sam Neil
- 0:53Speaker 1: was dead against the project when I was down there,
- 0:56Speaker 1: as are many others. There's opposition, there's legal challenges, fair enough,
- 1:00Speaker 1: you know they've got houses in the area, worried about
- 1:02Speaker 1: trucks on the road then what it looks like. But
- 1:06Speaker 1: it's also an area that would be serviced by this
- 1:08Speaker 1: brand new hospital that Dunedin is getting. Half the town's
- 1:12Speaker 1: buildings by the way, and Otaga wouldn't be there to
- 1:14Speaker 1: begin with if its not for gold mining. So the
- 1:18Speaker 1: permits issued. The rest is with fast track whatever. But
- 1:21Speaker 1: how are you going to pay for that hospital? How
- 1:24Speaker 1: are you going to pay for that hospital? Wanaka said
- 1:27Speaker 1: no to a McDonald's in part due to concerns about
- 1:29Speaker 1: healthy eating. Residents objected to a solar farm in part
- 1:33Speaker 1: because of something called lunar reflection, that the moonlight might
- 1:37Speaker 1: reflect off a solar panel like it would I don't
- 1:40Speaker 1: know a lake or an ocean. I mean, come on,
- 1:44Speaker 1: are we clutching its straws here or what. It's all
- 1:47Speaker 1: well and good, but if we want stuff like new hospitals,
- 1:50Speaker 1: highways and potholes fixed, you have to pay for them somehow.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And there's a little too much economic nimbiaism going on
- 1:57Speaker 1: at the moment I think for anyone to be serious
- 2:00Speaker 1: complaining about the state of things. For more from Early
