- 0:00Jon: This week on Xenomania, the tenant in room seven is very
- 0:05small, very twisted, and very mad.
- 0:10Join us as we travel to 1982 New York City for the story of a young man,
- 0:16Dwayne, and his formerly conjoined twin brother, Bilal, as they seek revenge
- 0:21on the doctors who separated them.
- 0:24Along the way, we discuss wigs, padded credits, and the joys of
- 0:30grimy, gritty New York City movies.
- 0:32Also,
- 0:33Does one of my co-hosts slash one of their favorite movies ever?
- 0:38Find out now.
- 0:40This is Basket Case.
- 0:43This is Xenomania.
- 1:03A-and
- 1:04Ryan: Twin.
- 1:05Kearns: I wish I had a conjoined tumor that was also murderous and named after
- 1:10Jon: c-
- 1:10Kearns: an, like, ancient Babylonian
- 1:12Jon: could speak to me in my head?
- 1:16Kearns: Oh, I forgot about the telepathy, by the way.
- 1:19It-- Oh my God, you d- you're right.
- 1:20We did just describe Danny DeVito.
- 1:24Jon: We did.
- 1:25Ryan: Dead.
- 1:25Jon: So, so, so "Twins" is a, a "Basket Case" remake.
- 1:30Kearns: Yes,
- 1:31Jon: Yeah.
- 1:31Kearns: so.
- 1:31Yeah, like, it, it... they ripped off the idea, totally.
- 1:34Jon: Yeah.
- 1:34Ryan: Oh, 100%, but they did it like the horror version, and being
- 1:38able to see it for the first time in its full length, 'cause I've
- 1:41seen only pieces when I was a kid,
- 1:43Jon: It's
- 1:43Ryan: a good...
- 1:45Kearns: Quinn's or a
- 1:45Ryan: I've
- 1:46Kearns: basket case?
- 1:46Ryan: thing.
- 1:46Basket Case I've only seen pieces.
- 1:48I've seen it for the first time,
- 1:50Jon: full
- 1:51Ryan: in its full length tonight, and it was amazing.
- 1:54It w- I, I liked it.
- 1:55Kearns: an interesting way to word it, but yeah.
- 1:57Y- yeah.
- 1:58Ryan: Like, it's, it's amazing in the sense of a B movie.
- 2:01Jon: of...
- 2:02Ryan: of five.
- 2:03Kearns: for a B movie, I'd say.
- 2:04Ryan: Girthy?
- 2:05Kearns: Yeah, a little girthy.
- 2:06Ryan: Belial is girthy.
- 2:08Kearns: It curves to the
- 2:08Jon: Mm.
- 2:09Kearns: But anyway,
- 2:12Jon: I, uh, h- well, hold on.
- 2:13I have a Bilal question before we get into anything any more serious.
- 2:17Ryan: He's
- 2:17Jon: Bilal lived in a basket, right?
- 2:19Ryan: Yes.
- 2:21Jon: Bilal eats.
- 2:22We know he eats.
- 2:23Kearns: Oh,
- 2:23Jon: Where does Bilal poop?
- 2:25Kearns: In the basket.
- 2:27Jon: Does he just poop in the basket he lives in?
- 2:29Kearns: basket.
- 2:30Ryan: He...
- 2:31Jon: Or do you think Duane has to take him out and hold him over
- 2:33a toilet a couple times a day?
- 2:35Ryan: I think he can get out himself.
- 2:36He, I
- 2:37Kearns: I mean,
- 2:37Jon: I mean,
- 2:39Kearns: We
- 2:39Jon: he... Yeah, he,
- 2:39Kearns: yeah.
- 2:40Jon: he can get out of the basket for sure,
- 2:42Kearns: I mean, I'm glad
- 2:43Jon: but...
- 2:43Kearns: they glazed over that part, to be honest with you.
- 2:47I don't need to
- 2:47Jon: Are you-- I don't...
- 2:48Kearns: Belial.
- 2:48Yeah,
- 2:49Jon: I feel like I need to know.
- 2:51Kearns: So everybody, by the way, we're doing "Basket Case" this week,
- 2:54if you hadn't figured that out yet.
- 2:55And, um, it is a...
- 2:57When did, when did "Basket Case" come out, John?
- 2:59Ryan: is.
- 2:59It's,
- 3:00Jon: 1982.
- 3:01Kearns: Ooh, it, it's older than me, baby.
- 3:03I like when that happens.
- 3:04And this one I watched, I remember seeing as a kid, like Ryan said, in, you know,
- 3:10bits and pieces, but then I sw- I watched it f- in its full glory also when I was a
- 3:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:15Kearns: on one of our B horror movie
- 3:16Jon: Yeah, I would, I
- 3:19Kearns: it's a...
- 3:20Jon: would say teenage years, yeah.
- 3:22Kearns: Yeah, like early teen, though.
- 3:23We would, we, we were watching the cute stuff back then.
- 3:26We were
- 3:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:27Kearns: the 13th Part II.
- 3:28Can you guys handle it?" And it was like sixth grade.
- 3:30And then we watched "Basket Case,"
- 3:32Ryan: it's more gorier.
- 3:32Um,
- 3:32Kearns: and that's a little bit more grindhouse-y, I'd
- 3:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:36Ryan: effects are well done.
- 3:40I even like the stop motion when he's,
- 3:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:44Ryan: I was,
- 3:45Kearns: It kinda makes the movie better.
- 3:47Jon: Absolutely.
- 3:48Kearns: yeah.
- 3:49Jon: So one thing about Bilal, the scenes on the bed are full puppet
- 3:56Kearns: Yeah, they got a
- 3:56Jon: Like,
- 3:56Ryan: that
- 3:58Jon: they don't have a dude.
- 4:00So here's the thing.
- 4:01they made the mold, and they put it in an oven at Rick Baker's studio,
- 4:05the, you know, renowned effects guy,
- 4:10Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 4:11Jon: it shrunk too much for any of the crew or cast to put their own hands in it.
- 4:18So one of the crew member's daughter winds up, eight-year-old daughter winds
- 4:25up puppeteering Bilal in that scene.
- 4:28Kearns: That's wild.
- 4:29Jon: Yeah, I have the, I have the name, and I can't find it right now, but...
- 4:34Kearns: on her like she was a freaking falcon to get
- 4:37Jon: No, she's j- she's under the bed.
- 4:39She- they,
- 4:40Kearns: it.
- 4:40Jon: they talked to her in one of the making of featurettes on the
- 4:44Arrow release of this, and she's like, "I had the greatest time.
- 4:48Like,
- 4:48Ryan: cool.
- 4:50Jon: that I saw was, you know, corn syrup and fake, and I had a great time."
- 4:56Kearns: That's cool.
- 4:56That's a good take your daughter to work day right there.
- 5:00Ryan: that's what it, it should be.
- 5:01Like, creating a horror film should be fun.
- 5:04it's like, it's unstable and scary on screen, but like behind the scenes,
- 5:11gotta have fun.
- 5:11You
- 5:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:12Ryan: at it, and,
- 5:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:14Ryan: you do
- 5:14Kearns: This one in p-
- 5:16Ryan: you
- 5:16Kearns: this type of horror movie in particular, I
- 5:18Jon: Yeah.
- 5:19Yeah.
- 5:19Ryan: yeah.
- 5:19I mean,
- 5:22Jon: it's such a small crew.
- 5:25You know, one of the things I learned watching it this time, a lot of the
- 5:29names in the credits are fake names because they made the credits, and they
- 5:33were like, "It's just the same five names over and over and over again.
- 5:37We need to..." They wanted to spice the credits up, so they just made up
- 5:42some names and threw 'em in there too.
- 5:43Kearns: if that's illegal or something.
- 5:45Um, I
- 5:46Jon: it is now.
- 5:47Kearns: Yeah.
- 5:47Jon: it is now.
- 5:48I bet there's, if not illegal, I bet there's, like, some union contractual
- 5:53stuff with that that they can't do it.
- 5:55But
- 5:55Kearns: money laundering kind of prevention because you know
- 5:58that there's, there's stuff going
- 6:00Jon: Yeah.
- 6:01Kearns: that.
- 6:01Yeah.
- 6:02Jon: Yeah.
- 6:02But they, I mean, "Basket Case" is a $35,000 budget.
- 6:06Kearns: Wow.
- 6:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:08Kearns: That's a wild number.
- 6:09That's a low... That might be the lowest budget we've done since
- 6:12Jon: It's,
- 6:13Kearns: show.
- 6:14Jon: it's up there.
- 6:15It's definitely, definitely in the top 10.
- 6:18Ryan: Phantasm III, or I'm sorry, IV.
- 6:20Jon: The "Phantasm" budgets were in, were low.
- 6:23Um,
- 6:24Kearns: Thought they were over, over
- 6:25Jon: budget was really low.
- 6:27Kearns: Hmm.
- 6:28Ryan: I would say Battery.
- 6:29Kearns: Let's see.
- 6:30Ryan: the lowest maybe,
- 6:31Jon: It could be, but I mean,
- 6:34Ryan: it's
- 6:34Jon: could be.
- 6:35Ryan: I mean, especially with what they were able to get away with, but it's also
- 6:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:39Kearns: battery was
- 6:40Jon: Yeah.
- 6:40Kearns: grand.
- 6:40It's, it's definitely number one.
- 6:43Jon: Yeah, it's gonna be hard to beat six grand.
- 6:45Kearns: asked 10 friends for 600 bucks each.
- 6:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:48Kearns: That's actually pretty baller
- 6:50Jon: It, it's gonna be hard to beat six grand.
- 6:52I think we talked about that when we did the episode too,
- 6:54and I just don't remember it.
- 6:56Ryan: Yeah,
- 6:56Kearns: I thought Phantasm IV was 650 grand.
- 7:01Jon: yeah, we've had a bunch in that range.
- 7:02I think we've had a couple in the, in the tens of thousands before, like, you
- 7:07know, in that 10,000 to 100,000 range.
- 7:10I think we've done a couple of those.
- 7:12Kearns: This is probably in the top three, Basket Case, 'cause
- 7:15Jon: I would... Yeah, yeah, 35, 35K is low.
- 7:19Kearns: mid-size car for 35 grand anymore.
- 7:22Jon: It might've
- 7:23Ryan: Night of the Living Dead less than Basket Case?
- 7:28Jon: been.
- 7:29Yeah, I, I'm blank.
- 7:30I just--
- 7:31Ryan: No,
- 7:31Jon: We haven't done Night yet.
- 7:33Kearns: I was like, "Am I losing my mind?"
- 7:34Ryan: we're gonna do the second best, and that's Dawn.
- 7:37Kearns: 114,000.
- 7:39Jon: Yeah.
- 7:40Kearns: Wow, what a, what a freaking flip with 30 million internationally.
- 7:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:45And, uh,
- 7:46Ryan: Living Dead, that--
- 7:47Jon: I mean,
- 7:49Ryan: I overestimated.
- 7:51Kearns: too, that's a bigger number now.
- 7:53Jon: that,
- 7:53Kearns: if you do that to 1982 numbers.
- 7:55Jon: that, $30 million is probably also nowhere near an official
- 7:59number with how much that... Because Romero didn't see a s- a, a lot of
- 8:05that money for a really long time because they didn't have the rights.
- 8:09Kearns: Yeah, it's so bizarre
- 8:10Jon: Because he, he had... Yeah, they trademarked the previous titles, and
- 8:15somehow when they sent the prints out, "Night of the Living Dead" did not have
- 8:21that little TM stamp next to the title.
- 8:24So it was just, that's why there's 10,000 copies of it going around.
- 8:29I think it's really not until Criterion got their hands on it that,
- 8:33Romero really got full control back.
- 8:37And I'm not even sure he was around to enjoy it.
- 8:40Ryan: No, they came out with it after his death.
- 8:43They did
- 8:43Jon: Yeah, I...
- 8:44Ryan: release when he was
- 8:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:46Ryan: It was, like,
- 8:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:47Ryan: but it was, it was the film, which was cool.
- 8:50Jon: in, his lifetime, they had started to get some of the rights
- 8:53and some of the money from it, but so many people made so much money.
- 8:58And really, you can make the argument at the end of the day that that actually
- 9:02helped "Night of the Living Dead" because
- 9:04Ryan: Yeah.
- 9:05Jon: people could just pop it on wherever they wanted without paying for it.
- 9:09So you could run it on TV for free.
- 9:11You could show it in a movie theater for free.
- 9:13I think that it probably helps "Night of the Living Dead" become what it is now.
- 9:17Ryan: It was free advertising too for George Romero, 'cause you see Night of the
- 9:21Kearns: cold
- 9:21Ryan: and it's like, what else has he done?
- 9:23Then you go to Dawn, you go to Day, you go through his
- 9:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:26Ryan: you
- 9:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:28Ryan: Creepshow, Martin.
- 9:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:30Ryan: know,
- 9:30Jon: But,
- 9:31Ryan: so much.
- 9:32Jon: but at the time, he needed some money . You know, he was, he... Yeah.
- 9:39Ryan: Literally.
- 9:40Jon: But- But back to, Creepshow.
- 9:43I, um... Creepshow.
- 9:45You put Creepshow.
- 9:47Basket Case.
- 9:48Back to Basket-
- 9:49Kearns: snafu for you, John.
- 9:50You're like
- 9:51Jon: Yeah,
- 9:51Kearns: rock, man.
- 9:52Jon: he just, he just said Creepshow, and I'm thinking about Creepshow because
- 9:55it's gonna come up again, and like the...
- 9:58Kearns: is it now?
- 9:59Jon: Yeah.
- 10:00Kearns: that, Ryan.
- 10:01Ryan: top five or, uh,
- 10:03Jon: Oh, I mean, you'll just have to wait and find out.
- 10:05Kearns: of the episode
- 10:05Jon: You'll just, you'll just have to find out.
- 10:07Um, so d- neither of you are really old enough to remember this era of
- 10:14Times Square and 42nd Street at all.
- 10:17Ryan: No.
- 10:18Jon: you don't, you probably never experienced it a- in
- 10:21any way, shape, or form.
- 10:24And I mean, Kearns, you would've been...
- 10:26Kearns: was like 13 when I first hit Times Square without a parent.
- 10:30Jon: Yeah.
- 10:30Yeah.
- 10:31So like,
- 10:31Ryan: version.
- 10:33Jon: You guys got, you guys got the, you guys got the, mainstream America.
- 10:38Kearns: Well,
- 10:39Jon: is n- this is now a, a, it's now a shopping mall.
- 10:43Like I was, I was looking at a map of, of Times Square now, just looking at the
- 10:47strips for something that we'll talk about in a couple minute, it's like Target.
- 10:51It's Lids.
- 10:53It's,
- 10:53Kearns: Us and stuff.
- 10:54Jon: yeah, it's, it's like it's every mall in America.
- 10:58Kearns: Yeah,
- 10:59Jon: doesn't have that personality.
- 11:01But Frank Henenlotter makes Basket Case as an ode to the movies that played on 42nd
- 11:09Street in Times Square when he was a kid
- 11:12Kearns: Okay.
- 11:13Jon: when he was coming up.
- 11:14And, like I think there's this false impression from Times Square in that
- 11:19time period that it was all like the adult movie theaters and the
- 11:23peep shows and the adult bookstores.
- 11:26There, there was definitely, there was definitely a ton of that, but you also
- 11:30had the grindhouse theaters, and you know, that's where you would go to see, uh, the
- 11:34exploitation movies, these horror movies like Basket Case, kung fu movies, you
- 11:41know, Bruce Lee movies all played there.
- 11:43Action movies.
- 11:44some of the movies that played there, like kinda first run, Shaft, a bunch of
- 11:48the Bruce Lee titles, Blood Feast, Night of the Living Dead played there a ton.
- 11:54Like it- that's what that area was.
- 11:57Now, as I mentioned, I g- I was googling like a map of Times Square.
- 12:03Two movie theaters.
- 12:05Two movie theaters left in that, in Times Square,
- 12:07Kearns: a
- 12:10Jon: I mean, they may as well be in... I mean, they're, it's not
- 12:13the same anymore anyway because one's an AMC and one's a Regal.
- 12:17So they're, you now, now you go to Times Square, you don't
- 12:20even get that experience.
- 12:22And listen, I understand it wasn't always safe.
- 12:26It wasn't always the best place to go and hang out when you were a kid,
- 12:30'cause we, I was definitely there way too young You know, we were sneaking
- 12:34into the city at like 14, 15 years old.
- 12:37Wouldn't always be Times Square.
- 12:38We'd go to the Village to hit record stores.
- 12:40We'd, we'd, you know, we'd wander.
- 12:43It w- but it was an experience.
- 12:45Now it's, you can drive up the street to your local mall and
- 12:48it's basically the same thing.
- 12:50Kearns: Yeah, they took that away.
- 12:51It's not a magical island of culture anymore,
- 12:54Ryan: It's
- 12:55Kearns: hit, uh, you gotta hit Harlem for that.
- 12:57That still s- exists to some
- 12:59Jon: Yeah.
- 13:00Kearns: but even
- 13:00Jon: Yeah.
- 13:01Yeah.
- 13:02Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 13:03Ryan: you still got like secret gems throughout the city that like, even
- 13:07Jon: Shit.
- 13:09Ryan: a mall experience, quote-unquote, like if you make like the right turn.
- 13:12I'll, I'll even-- I'll do a quick plug.
- 13:14Forbidden Planet in the city.
- 13:16It's a comic book shop.
- 13:17They do horror T-shirts, horror memorabilia, statues of comic books
- 13:22and stuff, manga, graphic novels,
- 13:24Kearns: Yeah.
- 13:26Ryan: Like they have it all, and it's just like a small little
- 13:28shop that's just like hidden.
- 13:31And it's, it's
- 13:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:32Ryan: But
- 13:33Jon: Yeah.
- 13:33Ryan: the life.
- 13:35Jon: Yeah, for sure.
- 13:36I mean, the city's too big to not have some of those places anymore, but
- 13:39they-- so much of it used to be in the, these few blocks of Times Square that
- 13:45you didn't have to go other places.
- 13:47And like, he, what he does with, Henenlotter does with some of the
- 13:52authenticity in here, like when, when Dwayne is first getting to the city,
- 13:57walking down the street, and he's got the drug dealer following him,
- 14:00offering him every drug imaginable to man, I had that experience.
- 14:05Kearns: Yeah,
- 14:06Jon: I had that e-
- 14:07Kearns: off either.
- 14:07Jon: No, the, this guy followed us for a block and a half offering
- 14:11us any drug you could think of, weapons, women, like just everything.
- 14:17It was like... And he, he didn't give up.
- 14:20Well, finally we were like, "Dude, we're all broke. We were at the
- 14:23peep show. None of us have any money." And he left us alone.
- 14:27Kearns: an
- 14:27Jon: Yeah.
- 14:28Ryan: We've
- 14:29Kearns: that's the way Times Square was, and then,
- 14:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:32Kearns: America's mayor is credited with clean, cleaning up Times Square.
- 14:36We don't have to
- 14:37Jon: Yeah.
- 14:37And, and, yeah,
- 14:38Ryan: No, we don't.
- 14:40Jon: would've happened eventually anyway.
- 14:42I mean, the whole of the '90s was sort of that cleaning up of America.
- 14:47You know, it, you know, and New York, New York City gives a lot of
- 14:52credit to him, but, you know, the Clinton administration ushered in a
- 14:57lot of reforms that lowered crime.
- 14:59It, it happened.
- 15:01Like it happened across the country, and it had to happen.
- 15:05It's just a shame that all of the personality of Times
- 15:08Square got wiped away.
- 15:10Kearns: 'cause then you lose the ingenuity, right, and the personality,
- 15:12and that's what those places were.
- 15:13This is non-commercialized content delivery is what it
- 15:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:17Mm-hmm.
- 15:17Kearns: when you get that, that's when you get the good stuff, the stuff that drips
- 15:21and oozes with greatness, and we don't
- 15:23Jon: Yeah.
- 15:24Kearns: ability anymore.
- 15:25Now we have carbon copy, rubber stamp, blah, blah, blah, blah,
- 15:28Jon: Yeah
- 15:28Kearns: And now we have people in Hollywood and stuff who just are
- 15:31dying to be able to create anything.
- 15:33Um, Ron Perlman's Waterfall goes to that concept as well.
- 15:37He wants to be able to have artists drive movies in some capacity,
- 15:41and maybe we'll see a, a reprisal.
- 15:43Um, we certainly have the infrastructure for it with tech now, so.
- 15:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:46Mm-hmm.
- 15:47Mm-hmm.
- 15:47And, and listen, a lot of the-- a lot of these movies still get made.
- 15:51They just don't get it the same sort of treatment anymore.
- 15:55They get dumped on, you know, direct to video or on a streamer or whate- Like,
- 16:01there's no experience like going and seeing some of these old exploitation
- 16:05grindhouse movies on a big screen.
- 16:07I saw "Basket Case" on a big screen.
- 16:09It was amazing.
- 16:11Alamo Drafthouse did it, and, um,
- 16:13Ryan: Oh.
- 16:14Jon: after the movie, Beverly Bonner, who plays Casey, came out and talked
- 16:18about making "Basket Case" for a bit.
- 16:20Like, it was awesome.
- 16:22Kearns: neat.
- 16:22That's
- 16:23Ryan: does
- 16:23Jon: You--
- 16:24Ryan: like that.
- 16:25Jon: Yeah, y- yeah.
- 16:26Al- Al- I mean, Alamo walks that fine line in their programming between the
- 16:31big new release and, you know, classics and grindhouse and all that stuff.
- 16:38And it, it's good that it exists, but I think we probably need more of those.
- 16:42Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:43Ryan: agree.
- 16:44Kearns: problem is we're getting less than there--
- 16:45Jon: Yeah.
- 16:46Kearns: the
- 16:47Jon: are.
- 16:47Kearns: do exist were just bought out and gutted
- 16:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:51Kearns: They
- 16:53Ryan: Right now we're
- 16:53Kearns: took away what made them special.
- 16:55Ryan: Oh, sorry.
- 16:55I was gonna say, we're,
- 16:56Kearns: I
- 16:57Ryan: spot of, like, where movies are, right?
- 16:59'Cause, like, we've had,
- 17:01Kearns: mean...
- 17:21Jon: at the end of the day, the box office is gonna dictate it, and I mean, if those
- 17:25movie-- if the art house isn't making money, you'll get the return to Marvel and
- 17:32DC or something equivalent that will draw large numbers of people back to theaters.
- 17:37I mean,
- 17:38Ryan: It's
- 18:04Kearns: It's over 100 actually.
- 18:05It was like, we went to go see "Mario Galaxy." It was like 128 bucks all told.
- 18:09And that's one piece of c- one thing of candy for each of the kids.
- 18:13The whole family shared
- 18:14Jon: Yeah.
- 18:14Yeah.
- 18:15Kearns: We got two, two beverages and the
- 18:18Jon: Yeah.
- 18:18Kearns: That's all it was.
- 18:19I
- 18:19Jon: It can't, it can't be that.
- 18:21That's not a sustainable model.
- 18:23Like, it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter what you put into those theaters,
- 18:27you're gonna struggle to, to sell tickets.
- 18:30You're gonna struggle to fill a theater if that's what you're charging.
- 18:34Kearns: think their goal now is they assume they don't have to fill
- 18:38the theater if they can get the people who will pay that to fill
- 18:41Jon: Yeah.
- 18:41Kearns: of it,
- 18:42Jon: Yeah.
- 18:43Kearns: gonna blow up in their faces.
- 18:45Ryan: Yeah.
- 18:46It's just too much
- 18:47Kearns: Bum, bum, bum.
- 18:48Ryan: like, it's
- 18:49Kearns: And that's the way the theaters are thinking.
- 18:52Jon: Yep.
- 18:52Yep.
- 18:52Kearns: Yeah, not the, not the, um... Because that hurts
- 18:56Hollywood in the long run.
- 18:57Do I have a animal behind me?
- 18:59I do.
- 18:59I have a cat behind me.
- 19:00Can you get out of here or come sit on my lap?
- 19:03One of the two.
- 19:04Get out of here.
- 19:06Ryan: But
- 19:06Kearns: Oh, anyway.
- 19:07Ryan: comfortable though, like sitting at home and watching a movie.
- 19:10I mean, just get a 100-inch, you know, screen or an 85-inch screen,
- 19:14put it up on your wall, and you get the movie experience with
- 19:16a soundbar or surround sound.
- 19:19Jon: Absolutely.
- 19:20I mean, I've always preferred wa-
- 19:22Kearns: yeah.
- 19:22Jon: I've always preferred watching movies at home because, you know,
- 19:26social anxiety, um, just general comfort, the ability to push pause
- 19:32if I have to go to the bathroom, you know, that, that kind of stuff.
- 19:35Like, I've always preferred the home experience, but there are some movies
- 19:41you have to go see in a theater.
- 19:43Ryan: feel like
- 19:44Kearns: Agreed.
- 19:44It
- 19:53Ryan: I feel like if I watched it at home alone, have meant anything.
- 19:57But going to the midnight opening
- 19:58Kearns: gets harder
- 20:09Jon: Well, I, I, I think, I think comedies in particular benefit from that kind of
- 20:14thing because it's... I don't know, maybe it's just my own, my own issues, but I
- 20:20always feel a little weird sitting on the couch alone laughing at something.
- 20:24Like, it always feels like, "Ah, maybe I'm slightly going insane right now."
- 20:28Kearns: Ah, it's more fun that way.
- 20:31But I agree with you, comedies hit harder in the theaters.
- 20:34Horror also, because tension
- 20:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:36Kearns: by
- 20:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:37Kearns: too.
- 20:37So
- 20:38Jon: Yep.
- 20:38Kearns: around you are tense, it, it adds to the atmosphere.
- 20:40Ryan: Conjuring 3, midnight opening.
- 20:43Everyone was,
- 20:43Kearns: of...
- 20:44Ryan: freaked out.
- 20:46Kearns: I bet.
- 20:46I
- 20:46Ryan: Oh,
- 20:47Kearns: bet.
- 20:47Speaking of tension, do we have a game this week?
- 20:50Jon: we absolutely have a game this week.
- 20:52It's another Slasher Stash.
- 20:56Ryan: Creepshow.
- 20:57Jon: I like to tell you guys how Allison, I like to tell you guys how Allison
- 21:01did on them before we even start.
- 21:03Kearns: Okay, so let's hear how Allison did.
- 21:05Jon: not well.
- 21:06Kearns: Oh, that's not good for us, Ryan.
- 21:08Jon: Not well.
- 21:09Kearns: combined.
- 21:10Jon: She, um,
- 21:11Ryan: Captain
- 21:12Jon: it down from five to three stashes Yeah.
- 21:19Kearns: It's not good.
- 21:20Jon: Sh...
- 21:20Kearns: are really, really good.
- 21:22Jon: Um, so I, I'm also gonna tell you the rule from, rules
- 21:26from previous weeks are in effect.
- 21:28If you correctly guess the theme, you will get... I, I'll, I'm
- 21:32gonna adjust that a little bit.
- 21:34If you correctly guess the theme, you can choose either to have
- 21:38an extra stash or a replacement.
- 21:43Kearns: Oh, that's a cool idea.
- 21:45I like replacement.
- 21:47Jon: That said, if you guess the theme wrong, you will lose one.
- 21:53Kearns: For each round, right?
- 21:54That you guess it wrong, you
- 21:55Jon: Each time you guess it wrong.
- 21:57Kearns: Er.
- 21:58Jon: S- and, which means you're only gonna get to guess t- three rounds.
- 22:04Kearns: Yeah,
- 22:04Jon: After the third r- I'm not gonna tell you, I want you guys to still
- 22:07try to figure it out if you haven't by then, and I think you should.
- 22:11I think if you, I think if you put your brains to this, you can figure it out.
- 22:15Okay?
- 22:16Kearns: Okay.
- 22:17Jon: I don't think it's that hard, so let's bring it up.
- 22:22Ryan: It's not
- 22:23Jon: I, I think, I think it's doable.
- 22:25I think it's doable for you guys.
- 22:27Kearns: Hmm.
- 22:27Jon: number one, Halloween 3.
- 22:32Kearns: Season of the Witch.
- 22:34Well, we already know I'm going to slash this one.
- 22:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:37Mm-hmm.
- 22:38Kearns: But I did enjoy kind of the way we discussed it and, gave it a little
- 22:42bit more artistic, you know, viability with me than it had been previously.
- 22:48but I just remember it being a big, fat disappointment when I first watched it,
- 22:51and that, that feeling will never go.
- 22:55Jon: That's fair.
- 22:56It grew on me over years.
- 22:57Like, it took a long time.
- 22:59Kearns: Mm-hmm
- 23:00Ryan: Well, I'm, I'm gonna slash it as well.
- 23:03It's the same reasons.
- 23:05No Michael Myers.
- 23:06You know, you're growing up, you see four, you see five, you see 'em all,
- 23:09and then you get three, and you're like, "Okay." And you don't get a shape.
- 23:13You get Halloween masks, a cool jingle, and a lot of
- 23:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:18Ryan: as you grow older.
- 23:19'Cause that's what it
- 23:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:21Ryan: you have to be a little bit older, I feel, to understand and enjoy the film, to
- 23:25ignore the fact Michael Myers isn't in it.
- 23:27But as a,
- 23:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:29Ryan: me, screw this film.
- 23:30it.
- 23:31All right.
- 23:33Jon: I mean, a- and, and all that said, I still firmly believe this
- 23:37movie would be viewed a lot higher if it didn't have Halloween in the title.
- 23:41If it was just Season of the Witch, I think people would
- 23:43have liked it a lot better.
- 23:45Kearns: Yep.
- 23:46Ryan: You've
- 23:46Kearns: it didn't have that lie, and I mean, if
- 23:48Jon: Yeah.
- 23:48Kearns: it down, it's a lie.
- 23:51Jon: Y- yeah.
- 23:51Ryan: us, Halloween.
- 24:06Kearns: What's the
- 24:06Jon: Yes.
- 24:07Slumber Party Massacre
- 24:09Kearns: more time trying to suss out this theme, but this is tricky.
- 24:15Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, if it's ever, like, the director and stuff like
- 24:21that, I always... I never, ever get those.
- 24:23Ryan: no, it's not the same director, but I'm,
- 24:28Kearns: Oh,
- 24:29Ryan: I'm...
- 24:29Kearns: don't mess this up, Ryan.
- 24:31Ryan: That's why I'm not saying anything, 'cause I have an
- 24:32Jon: Yeah, care-
- 24:33Ryan: lose it.
- 24:34Jon: careful, Ryan, because there are movies coming up on here that you will
- 24:37be heartbroken if you have to slash.
- 24:40Ryan: I know, that's why I'm like,
- 24:41Kearns: That's
- 24:42Ryan: very careful.
- 24:42But I'm gonna slash Slumber Party Massacre though.
- 24:45I mean, I love the
- 24:46Kearns: a
- 24:46Ryan: but...
- 24:47Kearns: pretty cool ax, ax guitar right there.
- 24:50Ryan: Wait, is, is that the first one or the second one?
- 24:53The second
- 24:53Jon: It's the second one.
- 24:54It's the second one.
- 24:55I think I grabbed the wrong poster, but it's the sec- it,
- 24:58the, it should be the first one.
- 25:00Kearns: Okay.
- 25:00Ryan: Oh, okay.
- 25:01'Cause I was gonna say the second one, he comes back as as the, the rock star
- 25:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:07Ryan: with the
- 25:07Kearns: must be it.
- 25:08All right, I'm going to slash this as well.
- 25:12Jon: Yeah.
- 25:14Kearns: John knew this was happening.
- 25:16These
- 25:16Jon: Yeah.
- 25:16Kearns: These aren't even decoys.
- 25:17I don't understand what you're doing this week, John, and I don't like it.
- 25:21I
- 25:21Jon: Movie three.
- 25:22Kearns: I know.
- 25:23Oh, yay.
- 25:26Do you know who reminds me of Belial?
- 25:29The, uh, the
- 25:30Jon: Carol Anne.
- 25:30Kearns: in Poltergeist.
- 25:32Jon: Zelda Rubenstein.
- 25:33Kearns: Zelda Rubenstein is creepy, and there could be no
- 25:36ghost activity in this film, and it'd be creepy just 'cause of her.
- 25:39Ryan: How dare you call
- 25:40Kearns: It sort of scares
- 25:42Ryan: woman.
- 25:44The
- 25:44Kearns: you.
- 25:44You built your house on an Indian burial ground.
- 25:49Hmm.
- 25:51I'm gonna have to stash Poltergeist, man.
- 25:53Jon: Yeah.
- 25:54Kearns: no idea what the theme is.
- 25:56This is, this is a week for you, Ryguy.
- 25:59Ryan: I'm trying to figure it out.
- 26:02I'm really trying to.
- 26:03This is, it's hard.
- 26:06I'm just
- 26:07Kearns: all older films, but that's not necessarily a trend or anything for him.
- 26:11Ryan: But how many
- 26:12Jon: You got it.
- 26:30Kearns: It's
- 26:30Jon: Yep, they are all 1982.
- 26:32Kearns: That's why you put the other poster up, because it said 1987 on it.
- 26:36Jon: Yeah.
- 26:37Ryan: That's
- 26:37Kearns: bastard.
- 26:38Ryan: so Halloween, Season, The
- 26:40Jon: No, they-- no, the, the Slumber Party Massacre poster was just
- 26:44Ryan: I,
- 26:45Jon: careless.
- 26:46Ryan: You know
- 26:46Kearns: Good job, Ryan.
- 26:47Jon: Careless.
- 26:48Ryan: something, but the thing is, is I was confusing Season
- 26:51of the Witch with '83, because
- 26:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:54Ryan: II came out in '81, and I was like, "I think that's too close."
- 26:57But with Slumber Party Massacre, you putting the sequel poster, I
- 27:01was like, "Is he doing the second one?" Like, that's where I went off.
- 27:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:05Kearns: You know that's
- 27:06Jon: Yep
- 27:08Ryan: '82.
- 27:08Uh, but you know what?
- 27:10That means I... Do I... Wait, hold on.
- 27:12So wait,
- 27:13Jon: You can choose to have,
- 27:15Kearns: either
- 27:15Jon: choose
- 27:16Kearns: four.
- 27:16Jon: re- you can keep four or you can choose to replace one of three.
- 27:21Ryan: gonna keep four, and I am keeping Poltergeist, because if
- 27:24not, I would've slashed it, so I will keep Poltergeist as my gift.
- 27:29Jon: All right.
- 27:31Good job, Ryan.
- 27:32Ryan: Thank you.
- 27:32Kearns: Yeah, good job, man.
- 27:34Ryan: thinking about this.
- 27:34This one I was, like, really thinking about.
- 27:36I was like, "Currence is not getting this one. I'm sorry."
- 27:39Kearns: Not having it.
- 27:41guessed the year.
- 27:42If they... I saw 82 on that poster, I would've guessed the year.
- 27:45Ryan: Like I
- 27:45Kearns: But I didn't get to cheat this time around, because I, I don't
- 27:48have your brain for knowing when these movies were actually released.
- 27:51I have to like see stuff.
- 27:53All right.
- 27:53Here you go.
- 27:54Jon: So,
- 27:55Ryan: it's a curse on
- 27:56Jon: if you, if you, if you know "1982", you have a bit of an advantage now.
- 28:02Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 28:03Jon: You can kind of think of some things that might be coming up, such as...
- 28:08Ryan: Yep.
- 28:09Kearns: There it is.
- 28:10Ryan: Stash.
- 28:11Kearns: it is.
- 28:12Gotta stash it too.
- 28:13I'm down to one.
- 28:14Damn it.
- 28:14But
- 28:15Jon: Yeah.
- 28:16Kearns: I love Creepshow.
- 28:17Ryan: All right.
- 28:17If you love it, what's your favorite segment?
- 28:19What is your favorite segment of the whole thing?
- 28:21Kearns: Probably grows on you.
- 28:24Ryan: I was gonna say, that's my
- 28:26Kearns: Don't you call me out, bro.
- 28:29Don't you call
- 28:30Jon: I,
- 28:30Kearns: know about which short stories some of these are based on, bro.
- 28:35Jon: I kind of feel like it's different every time I watch it.
- 28:38Kearns: Mm.
- 28:40Ryan: go
- 28:40Kearns: The Raft is super good too.
- 28:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:43Kearns: Also Stephen King short story, by the way.
- 28:45Jon: Isn't the raft in two, though?
- 28:47Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 28:47Kearns: might be.
- 28:47Ryan: the
- 28:48Kearns: It
- 28:48Jon: I think the raft is in two, yeah.
- 28:50Kearns: one is in, um-
- 28:52Jon: Two.
- 28:53Kearns: Two, and iconic one's in the Creepshow one.
- 28:57Leslie Nielsen's one.
- 28:59Jon: Uh-huh.
- 29:00Kearns: one.
- 29:00"It Grows on You" is in one.
- 29:02Ryan: Yep.
- 29:02Jon: Yep.
- 29:03Ryan: the old man coming from his grave for his birthday cake is in one.
- 29:07Kearns: Oh,
- 29:08Ryan: the
- 29:08Jon: the roach,
- 29:09Kearns: Creepshow.
- 29:09Jon: one.
- 29:10Ryan: Yep, the creature in the box was the other one.
- 29:13Jon: Yep.
- 29:14Kearns: What's in the box?
- 29:15That one might be the best one actually, but I still think "It Grows on You"
- 29:17is my favorite 'cause I just loved it.
- 29:19Ryan: I- it's, it's just done so well, 'cause it's, like, the simple
- 29:23farmer, plus it's Stephen King
- 29:25Kearns: It's an homage to the blob.
- 29:27It's just
- 29:28Jon: and plus it's Stephen King and George Romero together.
- 29:32Kearns: Which is kinda nifty, yeah.
- 29:35Ryan: It's a
- 29:35Kearns: Yeah.
- 29:37Jon: It's about as good a duo as you can have for a horror movie.
- 29:40Kearns: calls Stephen King Stephen, and Stephen King calls George Romero George.
- 29:45Jon: I ho- I hope Stephen King called him George A.
- 29:48Ryan: George A. So you want, I got
- 29:52Kearns: Romero.
- 29:52Ryan: King, I got a Stephen King story.
- 29:54Um, I was watching YouTube clips and he was on Conan O'Brien, and
- 29:57he said he wanted to do a story.
- 29:59He was like, the most challenging story I could do?" And he said, "Well, the
- 30:03woman's bathroom in the airport." And it was going on about how this couple,
- 30:10you know, the woman stops and she's like, "I gotta use the bathroom."
- 30:12She leaves, and the husband's waiting, and it's hours and hours and hours.
- 30:18And then finally he goes in, but then he disappears.
- 30:22no one's c- knows what's going on.
- 30:24Everyone gets called,
- 30:25Kearns: good
- 30:25Ryan: the police, the firefighters, the governor, everyone.
- 30:29And then Conan O'Brien goes, "This is great. How did it end?" He goes,
- 30:32been into the woman's bathroom, so I don't know what's going on
- 30:35Kearns: joke.
- 30:35Pretty
- 30:35Ryan: I don't know how to
- 30:37Kearns: good joke.
- 30:38Ryan: And
- 30:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:39Ryan: like, he just built it up so well.
- 30:41I was like, "I wanna read this," but come on,
- 30:43Jon: Yeah.
- 30:43Kearns: similar with The Night Flier.
- 30:45It starts in the bathroom.
- 30:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:48Ryan: Okay.
- 30:49Jon: Ready for number five?
- 30:50Ryan: Yeah, do
- 30:52Jon: There
- 30:54Kearns: man.
- 30:56Ryan: Yeah.
- 30:57Ugh.
- 30:59You
- 31:00Kearns: Oh, I, I have
- 31:01Jon: go.
- 31:01Kearns: it, but, I am out of options.
- 31:05But Swamp Thing is super cool.
- 31:07Ryan: Swamp
- 31:07Kearns: what you gotta do, buddy.
- 31:09Jon: I
- 31:09Ryan: I am, I am gonna slash it.
- 31:11I do enjoy Sw- Swamp Thing, but I gotta slash it.
- 31:16Gotta
- 31:16Jon: just wanna point out, the number of movies you slash in this podcast
- 31:21that are Wes Craven movies astounds me.
- 31:26Kearns: John never resists the urge to throw shade at Ryan for doing
- 31:28anything against Wes Craven's name,
- 31:31Jon: Uh-huh.
- 31:32Kearns: legacy.
- 31:33Jon: because I, I can guarantee you if we were reversed, I would
- 31:36never, ever slash a Romero movie.
- 31:40Kearns: Probably
- 31:40Jon: Not one, not under any circumstance.
- 31:43Ryan: I'm picky, all right?
- 31:45Kearns: Well, there's a difference between Romero and Wes Craven.
- 31:50Sorry
- 31:50Jon: Yeah.
- 31:51Ryan: Like
- 31:51Kearns: There's--
- 31:51Jon: Yeah.
- 31:52Kearns: It's easier to slash some of Wes Craven's work, in my humble opinion.
- 31:56Ryan: No, I agree.
- 31:57I agree.
- 31:58There, there's him.
- 31:59Mrs. John Carpenter?
- 32:00Absolutely not.
- 32:02Kearns: My carpenter's cool.
- 32:03Ryan: Well, Escape From,
- 32:06Jon: Ward,"
- 32:06Ryan: Escape From L.A.
- 32:08Jon: "Escape from L.A." I could live without "Dark Star."
- 32:12Ryan: Re- Dark St- It's so, it's funny.
- 32:14Kearns: Lesser
- 32:14Ryan: like his
- 32:15Jon: It's all right.
- 32:15It's
- 32:16Ryan: watching
- 32:16Jon: right.
- 32:18Ryan: It's his early work,
- 32:19Jon: Now, but "Last House on"... Yeah.
- 32:22Like, they- there's definitely, there's some soft spots in Carbon.
- 32:26I mean, I'm sure a lesser Romero fan would- could find plenty of soft spots.
- 32:32I mean,
- 32:32Kearns: The way you worded that, bro.
- 32:39I am the pinnacle, for those behind me find cracks,
- 32:45or what they perceive as cracks in the work of this genius.
- 32:49Oh, that was brilliant.
- 32:51Jon: Yes.
- 32:51Kearns: You
- 32:52Jon: All
- 32:52Kearns: the wordsmith.
- 32:52Ryan: Kudos.
- 32:53Jon: six.
- 32:56I said number six.
- 32:57There we go
- 32:58Ryan: What
- 32:58Kearns: Oh, of course it's
- 33:00Jon: people.
- 33:01Kearns: people.
- 33:02Doesn't... Isn't this really just sleepers with more makeup on?
- 33:05Ryan: Yes.
- 33:07Jon: Hmm?
- 33:07Kearns: not something... What does it say?
- 33:09They are something more than lovers who are about to become
- 33:13something less than human.
- 33:16Ryan: I...
- 33:17Kearns: Being a cat would be pretty cool.
- 33:20Ryan: Mm. Eh.
- 33:22Kearns: movie must have made, like, a dollar in 1982.
- 33:25Ryan: I don't, I don't think it was as popular as it was.
- 33:28I mean, cool concept, right?
- 33:30Jon: I think it's definitely gained some popularity in the years since.
- 33:35Ryan: It's a... Correct me if I'm wrong.
- 33:38It's a remake, 'cause isn't there a Cat People movie from the '30s?
- 33:42Jon: Yes, I believe there is.
- 33:44Ryan: There is.
- 33:46Okay.
- 33:46I'm slashing it, though.
- 33:48Kearns: do it.
- 33:49Ryan: Yeah.
- 33:49Kearns: I
- 33:51Ryan: taking
- 33:51Kearns: do it, too.
- 33:52We got two more movies after this or three, El Jefe?
- 33:55Jon: Two.
- 33:56Kearns: I feel okay going into
- 33:58Jon: Ryan gets to stash them both.
- 34:00Did I accidentally skip way ahead?
- 34:02Hold on.
- 34:03I did.
- 34:03Kearns: right now.
- 34:03I hope, like, one of them's, like, some awful movie.
- 34:06Ryan: Don't you dare throw that
- 34:08Kearns: One of them y- you have to stave some pile of garbage film.
- 34:11Jon: All right.
- 34:12Wait, where did they go?
- 34:13Ryan: Swamp
- 34:14Kearns: There it is.
- 34:15Ryan: Oh.
- 34:16Kearns: it's
- 34:16Jon: No, hold on.
- 34:18No, where did my other pictures go?
- 34:20There we go.
- 34:21Ryan: Stash.
- 34:22Stash.
- 34:25In 3D.
- 34:26Kearns: I have a thing about movies that were produced in 3D, but this one
- 34:30is, like, one of the rare exceptions.
- 34:32Ryan: this why you showed me the poster earlier, or was that just ironic?
- 34:35Jon: Yeah, that was just coincidence.
- 34:37Kearns: He's cheating.
- 34:38He's showing you stuff ahead of time while you guys are out on your trysts.
- 34:41It's a conspiracy.
- 34:45Ryan: w- John, the book, um, the book you found.
- 34:51Jon: Oh, yeah.
- 34:53I don't even remember what it was.
- 34:55It's in my wishlist now.
- 34:56Ryan: but we were, like, gleaming over its, uh, sequel to one of the
- 35:01films that we actually talked about.
- 35:05Jon: Hold on, it's in... I think it's in my Amazon list, so.
- 35:10Ryan: Cool
- 35:10Jon: Hold on.
- 35:11Talk about, talk about Friday the 13th.
- 35:14Ryan: Well, Friday
- 35:15Kearns: there's a man, and the man is very strong.
- 35:19Nigh unstoppable.
- 35:21Ryan: is the first time he gets the hockey mask, right?
- 35:24he fights the biker gang.
- 35:25He shoots the
- 35:26Jon: Yes, this-- That's the significance of this Friday the
- 35:3013th is this is the hockey mask.
- 35:33Kearns: And the harpoon in 3D is pretty sick, by the way.
- 35:36even that era's...
- 35:39Ryan: It has the fireplace
- 35:40Kearns: I kinda stash this, but I really don't want to because I don't know
- 35:43what's next, and I was gonna get rid of it 'cause I have a thing about 3D
- 35:46movies that they're easy to get rid of.
- 35:48But I have to do it with this one.
- 35:50Jaws 3D is... I love it because it's so bad,
- 35:54Ryan: floating
- 35:54Kearns: and it's got the Quaid.
- 35:55I do love the Quaid.
- 35:57Jon: So
- 35:58Kearns: yeah, I'm
- 35:58Jon: what I'm hearing is this is a stash?
- 36:00Kearns: I have to stash it.
- 36:02It's the first... It's the mask.
- 36:04It's the, the symbol of the franchise, for
- 36:07Jon: It is the mask,
- 36:08Kearns: Oh,
- 36:08Jon: and you are about to, you're about to learn why this was so hard for Allison.
- 36:13Kearns: no,
- 36:14Ryan: What's the last one?
- 36:16Jon: Last one.
- 36:17Kearns: the right way.
- 36:18Never mind.
- 36:18Ryan: No, hold on.
- 36:19Wait.
- 36:19Opposite.
- 36:20Ooh, yes.
- 36:21Yes.
- 36:22Kearns: All right, that's it for tonight, everybody.
- 36:24I'm logging off.
- 36:25Ryan: Yes.
- 36:27Oh.
- 36:28Jon: I knew I was gonna get one of you guys to have to cut this,
- 36:31Ryan: Oh,
- 36:32Jon: this.
- 36:32Kearns: Yeah, I see that this one wasn't random order either, you bastard.
- 36:35You started in
- 36:35Jon: No.
- 36:36Kearns: purpose.
- 36:36There's a
- 36:37Jon: no, it wa- It,
- 36:38Kearns: with this one,
- 36:39Jon: it... No, this one was definitely intended to be random
- 36:42order and somehow I messed it up.
- 36:44Kearns: Somehow messed it up.
- 36:45Ryan: I
- 36:45Kearns: So
- 36:45Jon: Listen, I, I'm ru- I'm run- I'm running on about four hours of sleep here.
- 36:50I'm a little messed up, so...
- 36:52Kearns: that's, that's understandable.
- 36:53Ryan: The
- 36:53Kearns: Damn
- 36:54Ryan: is a great movie.
- 36:54Sorry that you had to slash it from your existence, but I still keep it in mine.
- 37:00Jon: Yeah.
- 37:01Yeah, I mean, at least it stays in the world.
- 37:03Kearns: This is
- 37:04Jon: But I...
- 37:05Kearns: one of the tops of ever, and I just got rid of it forever.
- 37:09Oh, my God.
- 37:09Ryan: No,
- 37:10Kearns: Okay.
- 37:10Ryan: it's gonna come back later in this year when we cover it.
- 37:13We're gonna
- 37:13Jon: But like,
- 37:14Kearns: I can resurrect it.
- 37:15Ryan: it,
- 37:15Jon: but that, that's kind of, kind of why this was so hard for Allison.
- 37:20She g- she stashed some stuff I was surprised.
- 37:23Like, I... She s- she kept a thing, and that's not usually
- 37:27been her MO with that movie.
- 37:30Ryan: She
- 37:30Kearns: Hmm.
- 37:30Ryan: The Thing?
- 37:32Jon: Dogs.
- 37:33Ryan: Oh, fuck.
- 37:34Kearns: but that's not a real
- 37:35Jon: Dogs.
- 37:36Kearns: Allison,
- 37:37Jon: Doesn't matter.
- 37:38Ryan: the
- 37:38Jon: matter.
- 37:38Ryan: huskies were
- 37:39Jon: matter.
- 37:40Ryan: The other
- 37:40Jon: Doesn't matter.
- 37:41Yeah,
- 37:42Kearns: huskies were really right.
- 37:44Fodder
- 37:44Jon: Yeah.
- 37:45Yeah.
- 37:45That
- 37:46Kearns: friend they
- 37:46Jon: that doesn't usually matter.
- 37:48But yeah, I forget what.
- 37:50She, she stashed another one that I was surprised by.
- 37:53Uh, might've been Halloween III.
- 37:56Ryan: shocker.
- 37:59Jon: had a hard time getting down to, down to three.
- 38:03Kearns: Yeah.
- 38:04Jon: As d- as did Kearns.
- 38:07As would Ryan have if he didn't get that...
- 38:10Kearns: a little bit like,
- 38:11Ryan: God.
- 38:12Kearns: a forcibly removed tumorous-looking brother that
- 38:15lives in a basket right about now.
- 38:18to feel like I might have to take out
- 38:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 38:20Kearns: some peeps
- 38:23Jon: So we, I think we should start with the doctors who removed Bilal from Dwayne,
- 38:31Ryan: Yep, Dr.
- 38:32Jon: and the fact that they... Lifflander, Needleman,
- 38:38and,
- 38:40Ryan: Cutter.
- 38:41Jon: Yep.
- 38:42But
- 38:43Kearns: A
- 38:43Jon: what,
- 38:44Ryan: Needleman.
- 38:45Jon: kind of doctors are they, gentlemen?
- 38:47Kearns: Sturgeon kinds.
- 38:49Ryan: Wow, uh, Dr. Cutter's a veterinarian.
- 38:52Jon: They're all, they're all veterinarians.
- 38:54Ryan: vets?
- 38:55I thought...
- 38:56Jon: Yeah, all three of them are vets.
- 38:58Ryan: They don't make
- 38:59Kearns: Interesting.
- 39:00Ryan: clear with Needle- was it Needleman?
- 39:02Jon: They... No, they... And Needleman, you know, Needleman may have just been
- 39:06like a regular doctor, but they do at one point refer to them as veterinarians.
- 39:11Kearns: Well, if you're
- 39:11Jon: Like
- 39:12Kearns: for a
- 39:12Jon: Lift- Liftlander called other... Uh, yeah, and apparent- I mean, it's revealed
- 39:17at one point that these weren't the first doctors they consulted with, that the
- 39:22father really just wanted to save Duane.
- 39:27Bilal, he didn't care about.
- 39:29Bilal, I mean, listen, it's the,
- 39:32Kearns: fair.
- 39:33Jon: it's the early '80s, Bilal is...
- 39:35Ryan: He's done.
- 39:36Kearns: It's gonna have a rough go of it, and we, we got-- we need Duane
- 39:39over here to carry on the family name.
- 39:42Jon: And, and listen, it w- it would be a reasonable expectation looking at Bilal
- 39:47to believe he would not survive removal.
- 39:50Ryan: Oh, he
- 39:51Kearns: It would've been beneficial to the entire world if he hadn't,
- 39:55Jon: He-- Well, yeah.
- 39:56Kearns: Well, I mean, today, y- I think they would probably
- 39:58mercifully euthanize that thing,
- 40:02Ryan: Yeah.
- 40:02Jon: I
- 40:04Kearns: You don't think so?
- 40:05You think they
- 40:05Jon: don't know.
- 40:06Uh.
- 40:06Kearns: is a fair point.
- 40:08We're
- 40:08Jon: We don't, we don't like that concept.
- 40:10Yeah.
- 40:11Ryan: yeah.
- 40:12Jon: we don't like that concept.
- 40:13Kearns: About 30% of us don't like that concept, let's be fair.
- 40:18Jon: True, true.
- 40:19Kearns: pretty loud right about now.
- 40:21So,
- 40:21Jon: yeah.
- 40:22Kearns: Okay.
- 40:24So
- 40:25Jon: Just...
- 40:25Kearns: the removal of Belial, and then, um,
- 40:29Jon: Yeah,
- 40:29Kearns: realize he has a brother?
- 40:32Ryan: Oh, he's always known him.
- 40:34Jon: always known.
- 40:35Kearns: How
- 40:35Jon: Yeah.
- 40:36Kearns: He was raised alongside him.
- 40:38Ryan: Well,
- 40:38Jon: Yeah.
- 40:39Ryan: well,
- 40:40Jon: He, he
- 40:41Kearns: he?
- 40:42Jon: very alongside...
- 40:44Ryan: I mean, by, you know, holding him up to the spot where
- 40:47he was cut, but, like, Belial
- 40:50Kearns: I'm to get you guys to tell the, the listeners that may not know that w-
- 40:55he doesn't have this removal as a child.
- 40:57Does he have it as an adult?
- 40:58Ryan: no, yes, as a
- 40:59Jon: Oh, he's, he's 12.
- 41:01Kearns: he's
- 41:01Jon: he's 12 when they, they... Yeah, that, that's a really long
- 41:05time to have a, a conjoined twin that you... is that condition.
- 41:11Kearns: homeschooled.
- 41:14Jon: I'm gonna say almost definitely homeschooled.
- 41:17I mean...
- 41:17Ryan: a tutor go to them.
- 41:19She freaks out.
- 41:21aunt is a sweetheart
- 41:23Jon: The, the aunt is the only compassion they have as children.
- 41:28That's the only love, that's the only nurturing.
- 41:31Kearns: That's fine.
- 41:32Jon: Well, I mean, Duane, Duane's really not once he doesn't have
- 41:37his brother attached to him.
- 41:38Kearns: he's fine.
- 41:40He's fine.
- 41:40He's...
- 41:40Jon: I, I mean, yeah.
- 41:43in a world where "Basket Case" has more than a $35,000 budget,
- 41:48I've always envisioned Dr.
- 41:50Cutter played by Sigourney Weaver.
- 41:53Kearns: would be kinda cool.
- 41:53That'd be kinda cool.
- 41:56Ryan: I can see that.
- 41:57She's got the look.
- 41:58mean,
- 41:59Kearns: No world.
- 42:00Gotta put on
- 42:01Jon: In a world...
- 42:01Ryan: I'm just saying
- 42:02Jon: Yeah.
- 42:03Ryan: Jada kept hearing her scream, and she's like, "What is that
- 42:05noise?" Says, "You gotta turn it off, this woman's annoying.
- 42:08Is she dead yet?" And I'm like, "No, not yet.
- 42:10Give it a few more
- 42:11Jon: It,
- 42:12Kearns: When
- 42:13Jon: it's funny 'cause Allison had the same comment this afternoon
- 42:16when I was watching some of the behind the scenes stuff.
- 42:18She said, "I forgot how much screaming there was in this movie."
- 42:23There was a lot of screaming.
- 42:25Kearns: of
- 42:25Jon: a lot of screaming.
- 42:26Kearns: need a lot of extra effort from your actors.
- 42:29Jon: Yeah.
- 42:30Yeah.
- 42:31Kearns: Belial screaming.
- 42:33Ryan: It's just
- 42:33Kearns: He's relatively quiet and goopy throughout most of it, right?
- 42:36Gr, gr, gr.
- 42:37Ryan: like when he's against the
- 42:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:39Ryan: "Aah." I'm
- 42:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:43Kearns: Movie's
- 42:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:44Ryan: vine?
- 42:45Like,
- 42:46Kearns: This movie's ridiculous.
- 42:47We didn't even have to hash through the summary.
- 42:48Sometimes we go
- 42:49Jon: No.
- 42:50Kearns: of the
- 42:50Jon: Yeah.
- 42:50Kearns: much
- 42:51Jon: mean,
- 42:51Kearns: here,
- 42:51Jon: I mean, it's a revenge movie.
- 42:54Dwayne is bringing Bilal to get revenge on the doctors that separated him.
- 42:58they get Dr. Lifflander in Glens Falls, and then it's on to New York
- 43:03to take out Needleman and Cutter.
- 43:05Ryan: You know, though, I'll say this.
- 43:07Kearns: Yeah,
- 43:08Ryan: say this.
- 43:10Kearns: of
- 43:10Jon: Well,
- 43:10Ryan: He's
- 43:11Jon: mean, yeah.
- 43:12Ryan: I'm just
- 43:13Jon: Yeah, Bilal, Bilal has a thing for Casey, for sure,
- 43:17Ryan: W-
- 43:17Jon: and then later on he has a, he has a, he has a thing for Sharon, who becomes
- 43:25Dwayne's unex- unexpected love interest.
- 43:28Ryan: Yep.
- 43:29Kearns: Karen is the straw, the straw that broke the camel's back for
- 43:32the relationship between these two
- 43:33Jon: Yep, yep, yep.
- 43:34D- Bilal does not like Dwayne getting kissed.
- 43:39That, that telepathic connection causes a room trashing.
- 43:44Kearns: in the gonads
- 43:45Jon: Yep.
- 43:46Kearns: guy.
- 43:46Jon: Yep, yep.
- 43:47Kearns: wonder where those are, 'cause he's kinda got an
- 43:50ET thing going on, you know?
- 43:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:52Kearns: He, he doesn't... You don't really see any of the...
- 43:55Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:56They're underneath him somewhere, I think.
- 43:59Ryan: It's...
- 44:00Jon: And they're, they're there.
- 44:01Kearns: gotta buy the Belial Christmas ornament so we can find out for ourselves.
- 44:07Ryan: Buy it at your
- 44:08Jon: So I wanna ask if you guys noticed, um, that Sharon is
- 44:14wearing a wig the whole movie
- 44:16Kearns: No, I did not.
- 44:18I, I really wasn't looking too closely, to be honest with you, but I had
- 44:23Jon: She is wea- Sharon is wearing a ra- a wig the entire movie.
- 44:27She, her real life name is Terry Susan Smith, and she was in a punk rock band at
- 44:33the time they made this movie, and, uh, a punk rock band called Tattooed Vegetables.
- 44:40Kearns: That's a pretty
- 44:40Jon: She, she had her head shaved at that point in time.
- 44:44Ryan: So she
- 44:45Kearns: Little Sinéad O'Connor action going on
- 44:48Jon: Yeah.
- 44:49Yep.
- 44:50And she apparently was very, very concerned throughout most of
- 44:54filming about how the wig looked.
- 44:57Ryan: It looked
- 44:57Kearns: enough.
- 44:58Ryan: Yeah.
- 44:59Kearns: Yeah,
- 44:59Jon: Yeah, I mean, I, I never really thought about it until, you know,
- 45:03now and reading about, more about Basket Case, and I came upon that.
- 45:06I think we haven't, yet mentioned Kevin Van Henterick,
- 45:10Hentenrick, who plays Duane.
- 45:13Kearns: you point it out, it's a wig.
- 45:16Jon: yeah, when, when you know it's a wig now, you know, you realize it.
- 45:20Kearns: Before, I thought it was just the '80s.
- 45:22Ryan: Y-
- 45:23Jon: Yeah.
- 45:23Ryan: going with, but you know what?
- 45:24I still, like, they did a pretty good job, like, it placed there, especially when
- 45:28like... Well, it explains why when they put, like, the sheet over her and they do
- 45:32that scene, so the wig wouldn't fall off
- 45:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:37Ryan: when they push her out and stuff.
- 45:38But
- 45:39Jon: Yeah.
- 45:39Ryan: can't really tell.
- 45:40They did a pretty good job at a lot of the effects and, like, everything
- 45:44they did so well on the budget.
- 45:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:48Kearns: Yeah.
- 45:48Ryan: a B movie, it's very well
- 45:50Kearns: They hit you with good concepts like, you know, him creeping up on her and
- 45:54Jon: Yeah.
- 45:55Kearns: making you
- 45:55Jon: Yeah.
- 45:56Kearns: It's not even about the scares.
- 45:58The gore level's pretty high, but it's the
- 46:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:00Kearns: of how they
- 46:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:01Kearns: not just gore for the sake of gore.
- 46:04her back.
- 46:05So,
- 46:05Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:06Kearns: like that, you know what I mean?
- 46:07There's actual thought and artistry
- 46:09Jon: Yeah.
- 46:10Yeah.
- 46:10And, um, Kevin Van Hentenrick does a really good job as Duane.
- 46:17He's... I, I met him at, uh, at the first Connecticut Horror Fest I ever went to.
- 46:23I have, I have an autographed photo of him hanging right above my head right now.
- 46:27He's, like... I think it, I think it's from two or three.
- 46:32I would...
- 46:32It's definitely not from the first one.
- 46:34I just don't remember if it's two or three, this photo.
- 46:37But he, was a really nice guy.
- 46:39I, I wish, in hindsight, I wish I hadn't gone to him first, because
- 46:44really, the way it was laid out, the first Connecticut Horror Fest I went
- 46:49to, I went because it was Romero.
- 46:52Kearns: Yeah.
- 46:54Jon: And the way that conference center was laid out was sorta like
- 46:58a, like a horseshoe, and at the end of the horseshoe was Romero
- 47:02Ryan: Yeah
- 47:04Kearns: That's pretty
- 47:04Jon: And, you know, so we're walking pa- we're walking past all these people
- 47:08and, like, we'd stop and be like, "Oh, Basket Case guy, let's, let's get an
- 47:12autograph." But, like, we didn't even try to spend any time talking to him.
- 47:17It was like, "We gotta get to Romero."
- 47:19Kearns: Yeah,
- 47:19Jon: And I wi- I wi-
- 47:20Kearns: felt that way.
- 47:22Jon: in, in hindsight, I wish I had spent a few more minutes
- 47:25h- just talking to him, but...
- 47:28Kearns: Yeah, that would've been kinda neat.
- 47:29I bet you he had
- 47:30Jon: Yeah.
- 47:30Kearns: things he could've said.
- 47:32Jon: Um, yeah, yeah.
- 47:33Like, he's got... So in the bonus features, there's an
- 47:37extended interview with him.
- 47:39You know, he, he's, at this point, I think some of his memories of
- 47:43making this are not fully reliable.
- 47:45Um, they did talk about the scene where, um, towards the end where Bilal
- 47:50grabs him by the groin and lifts him.
- 47:52Kearns: Yeah.
- 47:53Jon: And Frank Henenlotter asks, you know, "Do you remember how we did
- 47:57that?" And he's like, "'Cause you don't see wires, right?" He's like,
- 48:01"Yeah, you had some sort of rigged contraption that you stuck me on."
- 48:05And they did.
- 48:06He had, they had, like, a harness and a pole, and they stuck him to a pole.
- 48:12Ryan: Oh, okay.
- 48:13Kearns: gone bad, so
- 48:14Ryan: Yeah,
- 48:14Jon: Absolutely.
- 48:15Absolutely.
- 48:16The thing, the thing he remembered mostly was how uncomfortable and painful it was.
- 48:20Ryan: I
- 48:20Kearns: Yeah, I can't imagine that felt very good.
- 48:23Ryan: Here.
- 48:24Kearns: can't imagine they took, like, 50 takes either, though.
- 48:26They were like, "All right, we got, we
- 48:27Jon: No,
- 48:27Kearns: there
- 48:28Jon: no.
- 48:28All right.
- 48:29Ryan: All
- 48:30Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 48:30Ryan: do it from a
- 48:31Jon: We got, we,
- 48:31Ryan: Bob.
- 48:32Jon: we have this, we have this puppet holding onto, onto our actor's groin.
- 48:36We've, we gotta get this in one.
- 48:39Kearns: One take, and
- 48:40Jon: He's got a, he's got a pole up his... Yeah.
- 48:43Kearns: Yeah.
- 48:43Jon: they, I mean, there are two of them, at least two of them were
- 48:47in existence at, fairly recently.
- 48:50Kearns: Oh, cool.
- 48:51They gotta be worth a lot
- 48:54Jon: Henenlotter had one and the producer had another.
- 48:57Ryan: Okay.
- 48:57Kearns: Pretty sweet.
- 48:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:00Kearns: And if they're from the first movie, not the sequels
- 49:02too, they're probably worth bank.
- 49:04Jon: Yeah.
- 49:05Yeah.
- 49:05I mean, and I, I would imagine you won't, they'll never be up for purchase
- 49:10as long as either of them are alive.
- 49:12Kearns: Second they go up at auction, it's gonna be del Toro who buys them anyway.
- 49:17Jon: Oh, hopefully.
- 49:18Kearns: He's got a house full of stuff
- 49:20Ryan: It'll go right next to his pumpkin head.
- 49:23Kearns: It's the best part is that that's in the foyer.
- 49:25When you walk in the house, the first thing you see is Pumpkinhead.
- 49:28It's brilliant.
- 49:30but yeah, I mean, I think the film ends super well.
- 49:33It should have-- It, I mean, this is one of those ones where I don't care
- 49:35that it didn't end with the first movie, but it could've, it should've.
- 49:38It was meant
- 49:39Jon: Yeah.
- 49:39Kearns: seemingly.
- 49:41was talking about it earlier.
- 49:42Ryan, what happens to them at the end after, um, brothers are
- 49:45pit against each other by the
- 49:47Jon: before, before we even
- 49:48Ryan: they f-
- 49:49Jon: get
- 49:49Ryan: Oh.
- 49:49Kearns: Wait, hold on,
- 49:50Jon: to that, k- um- Right, the scene before that, the, the dream sequence
- 49:58Ryan: God
- 49:59Jon: where,
- 49:59Ryan: talk
- 49:59Jon: where,
- 50:00Ryan: That
- 50:00Jon: yeah, where Bilal, Bilal goes to Sharon to take her out, not on a date,
- 50:07Kearns: Yeah.
- 50:08Ryan: No.
- 50:09Jon: e- to eliminate, eliminate his competition
- 50:12Kearns: There you go.
- 50:27Yeah.
- 50:28Jon: one thing I'd never noticed before, if you watch that scene
- 50:32and you look at Dwayne, he does not have a scar on his side.
- 50:36Kearns: Is that a double?
- 50:37Or
- 50:38Jon: not.
- 50:38Kearns: to put it on?
- 50:39Jon: Nope.
- 50:40Kearns: Hmm.
- 50:41Jon: That is Bilal's vision of Dwayne.
- 50:44Kearns: Oh, that's too artsy-fartsy for this film.
- 50:48Jon: That, that, that's how, that's how Bilal sees Dwayne.
- 50:53Kearns: With no incision?
- 50:55Jon: no s- yeah, yeah.
- 50:57Kearns: No scar from the
- 50:58Jon: Yeah.
- 50:58Ryan: And,
- 50:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:59Ryan: naked?
- 51:01Jon: I mean,
- 51:02Ryan: Like,
- 51:03Jon: but I guess.
- 51:03Kearns: this
- 51:04Jon: I guess.
- 51:04Kearns: more fetched.
- 51:06Jon: I guess.
- 51:06I mean, yeah.
- 51:07Ryan: I'm
- 51:08Kearns: All right.
- 51:09Ryan: him running down.
- 51:10I'm like, "Is Snoop Dogg gonna come out? Is Will Ferrell?
- 51:14They looking for Popeyes?" You
- 51:16Kearns: What?
- 51:16Ryan: Dogg, give me your
- 51:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 51:19Ryan: You know, we're going
- 51:19Jon: Yeah.
- 51:20Ryan: Like, I was
- 51:21Kearns: Snoop was in diapers when this movie came out.
- 51:26Um,
- 51:26Ryan: Snoop
- 51:26Kearns: whatchamacallit?
- 51:27Ryan: no.
- 51:28No, I don't
- 51:28Kearns: '82?
- 51:30Ryan: Snoop?
- 51:32Kearns: I'm literally gonna Google how old was Snoop Dogg in 1982.
- 51:35Jon: I would bet it's, Snoop's, Snoop's right around my age,
- 51:38so he's probably 10 to 12.
- 51:40Kearns: I think he was 10 to 12.
- 51:42Ryan: He saw Basket
- 51:43Kearns: He was born in 1971.
- 51:45Damn it, he was 10 years old.
- 51:47Ryan: Yeah.
- 51:47Jon: Yeah.
- 51:48Ryan: Diapers.
- 51:50Rolling
- 51:51Jon: I mean, maybe.
- 51:52M- uh, hold,
- 51:53Kearns: yet, at
- 51:54Jon: hold on, hold on.
- 51:56You don't know he wasn't in diapers at 10.
- 51:59Kearns: Oh, true, true.
- 52:01Jon: have had some juvenile incontinence issues,
- 52:03Ryan: We
- 52:03Jon: allegedly.
- 52:04Ryan: We don't know
- 52:05Kearns: Allegedly perfect.
- 52:06Now we're safe.
- 52:07Ryan: yep.
- 52:07Kearns: Don't call the lawyers.
- 52:09We
- 52:09Jon: Allegedly, he m- allegedly, that might have been something
- 52:13that happened that I sort of just maybe made up in my brain.
- 52:18Ryan: Allegedly.
- 52:20Jon: Allegedly.
- 52:21Kearns: So we're ready to leapfrog over to the, the grand finale.
- 52:25And the only reason we're bringing up the end isn't to punctuate the end of
- 52:27the episode or anything, it's just 'cause the ending of the movie's pretty funny.
- 52:30It's pretty
- 52:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:31Ryan: they have this big fight, they get thrown out the window, and you see them
- 52:36hanging from the sign, Belial's holding the sign, and he's holding Duane by
- 52:40his throat, and he chokes him to death.
- 52:43And then once he's choked to death, he just lets go, is supposed to be like
- 52:47this big moment, and the hand's just like a little bit, then falls, and
- 52:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:54Ryan: dead.
- 52:56How do
- 52:56Jon: And you get the...
- 52:57Kearns: If I
- 53:00Jon: You, you, well, I mean, Sharon's gone at that point too.
- 53:04Kearns: else?
- 53:05Jon: you get to, you get some traumatized sex workers.
- 53:08Kearns: Yep, Times Square.
- 53:10They gotta put in the
- 53:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:12Kearns: Square.
- 53:13And then, yeah, it's roll credits with fake names, and
- 53:16that's the end of the movie.
- 53:17And b- they-- It should've been the end of the whole concept, but it did well.
- 53:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:22And
- 53:22Ryan: Yep.
- 53:22Jon: I mean, listen, two and three aren't, aren't great, but they
- 53:26are fun and they're pretty funny.
- 53:28You get to some, some really outrageously ludicrous things
- 53:32going on in, in two and three.
- 53:36Kearns: I mean, just the concept of like sitting down like, "Hey, man,
- 53:38I got an idea for a movie," and he pitches this to his buddy, and
- 53:41you're just probably like, "What the hell are you talking about, man?"
- 53:45Jon: Yep.
- 53:46Kearns: funny stuff.
- 53:47Ryan: It's, it's good.
- 53:50You know, it holds up for what it is.
- 53:51It's a good B
- 53:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:53Ryan: Something you get with a group of friends, have a good time, have a
- 53:57Kearns: Up tier B movie.
- 53:59Ryan: whatever you
- 53:59Jon: Yep.
- 54:00Kearns: B.
- 54:01Ryan: have
- 54:01Jon: Yep.
- 54:02Yeah.
- 54:03So
- 54:04Ryan: Yes.
- 54:05Jon: get into, some reviews and then our, thoughts?
- 54:08Kearns: Yeah, buddy.
- 54:09Ryan: reviews because
- 54:10Kearns: This...
- 54:11Ryan: there's a five star.
- 54:13Jon: Of course they're... I mean...
- 54:15Kearns: of them.
- 54:15This is a well-beloved movie.
- 54:17Jon: Do you guys, do you guys wanna take a guess at any of
- 54:20the Rotten Tomatoes scores here?
- 54:24Kearns: 79,
- 54:25Jon: is?
- 54:26Kearns: like
- 54:27Jon: You're saying
- 54:28Kearns: 79 tomato, but, uh, it's critic score, I'm saying sub...
- 54:32I'll do this way, sub 30% critic
- 54:35Jon: Okay.
- 54:36Ryan?
- 54:36Ryan: Uh, I'd say they probably gave it a 47.
- 54:42Jon: You guys are both way low.
- 54:44"Basket Case" is a 78% critic score.
- 54:47Kearns: That's
- 54:48Ryan: wow.
- 54:48Kearns: unbelievable to me.
- 54:50How is that even possible?
- 54:51Is this
- 54:52Jon: I think,
- 54:52Kearns: cult
- 54:53Jon: even, I, I mean, I think some of it is, but I think even at the time
- 54:57even Ebert kind of liked "Basket Case".
- 54:59Kearns: How would Ebert-- This stands against everything
- 55:01Ebert used to say about movies.
- 55:03Ryan: I'm looking that up.
- 55:04Jon: I,
- 55:05Ryan: Ebert.
- 55:05Jon: I, I, I think, I think Ebert had like a s- a level of respect
- 55:10for some of the grindhouse ones.
- 55:13Kearns: Yeah
- 55:14Ryan: Oh.
- 55:15Jon: I, I may be, I may be remembering that wrong, but I think...
- 55:19Ryan: I got, I got a quote.
- 55:21Jon: The only one?
- 55:22Ryan: Yeah, it's, it's short.
- 55:24Roger Ebert was not a fan of Frank Henenlotter's 1982 cult
- 55:28horror film, Basket Case, famously referring to it as sickening.
- 55:33While Ebert appreciated well-crafted horror like Halloween or Dawn of
- 55:36the Dead, he frequently criticized low-budget exploitation films
- 55:40that relied on extreme gore.
- 55:42So no, he was, he was not a fan of the first one, nor the second one.
- 55:48Jon: I mean, uh, if he didn't like the first one, he's not
- 55:51gonna like the second one.
- 55:52Kearns: goes harder in the pain on all those areas.
- 55:55Jon: Yeah.
- 55:55Yeah.
- 55:56and the audience score for Basket Case is 55%.
- 55:59Ryan: Really?
- 56:01Jon: Yeah, we have a split in a surprising direction to me.
- 56:04Kearns: That is bizarre.
- 56:08Jon: so we'll start with the five-star.
- 56:10"Insanely bizarre $35,000 budget, but way better than most low-budget films.
- 56:17Acting was excellent.
- 56:19The casting is amazing.
- 56:21Each character is so believable.
- 56:23The stop animation sucks, but for its time era, not an issue for me."
- 56:29Ryan: It
- 56:29Kearns: Yeah, I think maybe we, we put those two things in the wrong s- like,
- 56:33one belongs here, one belongs here, buddy.
- 56:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 56:37Yeah.
- 56:38I, I mostly-- I didn't think the stop action necessarily sucked.
- 56:42It was, it was a little clunky, but it was 1982,
- 56:45Kearns: Yeah.
- 56:46Jon: and $35,000.
- 56:48Kearns: Yeah.
- 56:48Ryan: works for the time.
- 56:51Jon: Yeah.
- 56:51of course, there's people who did not like Basket Case, such as this one-star.
- 56:56"Found this movie to be ridiculously stupid.
- 57:00Not much about it was good.
- 57:03The premise seemed to be stupid and ended up being lousy.
- 57:07The effects were very bad, even for the '80s."
- 57:12Kearns: Okay.
- 57:13Jon: think they were bad for the, even for the '80s.
- 57:15Like, they're good for $35,000.
- 57:19Ryan: Yes.
- 57:19Kearns: Yeah.
- 57:22Jon: And then there's this, there's another one-star
- 57:25because of course there is.
- 57:27One star: "Sometimes films are so bad they're good, but Basket Case is so bad
- 57:34it's effing terrible. The acting is some of the w- some of the worst I've ever
- 57:41seen, and the effects are all plasticine and red sauce. A proper terrible film."
- 57:49Ryan: Corn starch, buddy.
- 57:51Kearns: Agree
- 57:51Jon: Yep.
- 57:52Yeah.
- 57:54Speaking of the corn starch,
- 57:56Kearns: What the heck
- 57:56Jon: Fr-
- 57:57Ryan: Yeah, what
- 57:57Jon: Frank Hen- uh, Fidget.
- 57:59Kearns: Oh, okay
- 58:00Ryan: I was like, what
- 58:00Jon: Fidget.
- 58:01Ryan: about the corn starch?
- 58:02Did you just pull out a
- 58:03Jon: spe- Yeah, no, it's not the corn starch.
- 58:06Um, speaking of the corn starch, um, Frank Henenlotter still has a bottle of
- 58:11it from Basket Case in his refrigerator.
- 58:14Ryan: Oh, that's
- 58:14Kearns: Oh, cool.
- 58:15Ryan: I'll be
- 58:16Jon: Yep.
- 58:16Kearns: thing that can go for 100 grand at auction.
- 58:18Ryan: It, it's hard to make the perfect blood consistency with corn starch.
- 58:22It takes a lot of, you know, and error until you get to the perfect thing.
- 58:27So him saving
- 58:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 58:28Ryan: I don't blame him.
- 58:29Keep the formula.
- 58:31That's how we gotta
- 58:32Jon: Yeah.
- 58:32Kearns: formula.
- 58:35All
- 58:35Jon: So we heard what some other people think.
- 58:37What do you guys think?
- 58:39Kearns: I give, uh, Basket Case solid three stars.
- 58:42Solid three star.
- 58:43I might even have to edge it up to, like, 3.25.
- 58:45It's-- 'Cause it's just got so much character, man.
- 58:48There's a reason I remember it to this day.
- 58:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 58:51Kearns: We-- They-- People don't talk about it often at parties and whatnot,
- 58:54that I go to anyway, and I still remember Basket Case because it was a memorable
- 58:58movie, and it was an enjoyable experience.
- 59:00So, like, for 35 grand, what else could you ask for?
- 59:033.25,
- 59:05Ryan: Okay.
- 59:05Kearns: it's
- 59:05Jon: All right.
- 59:06Kearns: the titans.
- 59:07You're, you're, uh... The Thing is in the same pool as... And if we had different
- 59:11categories, maybe I would push it higher.
- 59:13And I don't really like grindhouse in general, but this is great.
- 59:17Ryan: Okay.
- 59:18Jon: All right.
- 59:19Ryan?
- 59:20Ryan: I am going to give it a three star, three out of five.
- 59:23beats my expectations seeing, know... Hey, listen, I wasn't gonna be forgiving.
- 59:29You keep saying I'm so forgiving and generous.
- 59:33I hope you're
- 59:34Kearns: For the wrong movies.
- 59:35Jon: I
- 59:36Kearns: I'm not muted, mother, father.
- 59:40Ryan: damn straight.
- 59:41But yeah, it, it beat my expectations seeing clips when I
- 59:44Kearns: There.
- 1:00:03Jon: You'll say one was enough, but I, again, like I love bad movies,
- 1:00:07so two and three are a lot of fun, especially like they, they're
- 1:00:11fun, they're fun party movies.
- 1:00:13You know, you put 'em on, you don't have to pay a ton of attention, and you can
- 1:00:16just laugh at the how ridiculous it gets.
- 1:00:18Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:00:20Jon: so I'm way above you guys on "Basket Case."
- 1:00:23Kearns: were going to be.
- 1:00:25Jon: And ba- ba-- it, it's gonna make more sense when I do my top five as to why, but
- 1:00:31"Basket Case" checks so many of my boxes.
- 1:00:36A- New York City, horror,
- 1:00:40Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:00:40Jon: indie stuff, the story, everything about it hits a box for me.
- 1:00:46So I, I, "Basket Case" is a four star for me.
- 1:00:49Ryan: Okay.
- 1:00:50Kearns: completely
- 1:00:51Jon: It's a, it's a solid...
- 1:00:53Yeah, it's a solid f- I could almost push it higher than
- 1:00:56four, but I'll stay at four.
- 1:00:58Kearns: And it's just for what it is too, it's a, it's a c- it's the underdog too.
- 1:01:02It's a great... Yeah.
- 1:01:04Jon: Yeah.
- 1:01:05Kearns: Awesome, man.
- 1:01:06I love the reviews.
- 1:01:07I love when we have a bit of a, bit of a spectrum on our reviews
- 1:01:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:10Ryan: My God, this is the first time that we-- first time
- 1:01:13we disagreed on everything.
- 1:01:16Can't believe it.
- 1:01:17But,
- 1:01:18Jon: Yeah, we never disagree on ratings for movies.
- 1:01:21Ryan: But we're talking about top fives tonight.
- 1:01:23And you know what?
- 1:01:24I'm gonna get into top five martial art films, I feel like these
- 1:01:28martial art films, um, I love.
- 1:01:32highly recommended, and they have the, you
- 1:01:35Jon: recently, but I've seen it, yeah
- 1:01:58Ryan: film follows Jet Li.
- 1:01:59He played, uh, the character Danny, who's trained from childhood to be
- 1:02:03a brutal enforcer for a crime boss, played by Bob Hoskins, who learns about
- 1:02:07the possibilities of a normal life.
- 1:02:09And it's just, it's a beautiful story in which this character's enjoying life.
- 1:02:13He's seeing the freedom, and then he's brought back in, and he's
- 1:02:16gotta unleash, no pun intended, his kung fu style to defeat everyone.
- 1:02:21And it's, it's a-- no one talks about it a lot.
- 1:02:24I really don't see it anywhere a lot.
- 1:02:27Kearns: It's buried because Jet Li's movies were f- like, kind of
- 1:02:30like of favor for a little while.
- 1:02:33He did The One
- 1:02:34Ryan: Black mask.
- 1:02:34Kearns: and he did Unleashed.
- 1:02:37Black Mask was good too.
- 1:02:38They were like, they were kinda being sort of like, "Okay, okay, okay," sorta thing.
- 1:02:44He, he did, uh, what was The Way of the Dragon or something?
- 1:02:46Something Dragon,
- 1:02:47Ryan: Uh,
- 1:02:48Kearns: and that was amazing.
- 1:02:49And then was it Once Upon-
- 1:02:51Ryan: I think Once Upon a Time in China.
- 1:02:53He did?
- 1:02:54Is that the same one where he's got the, um, he's got the long, um...
- 1:03:00Kearns: is a different one.
- 1:03:00This is the one where he's in France and he's, he's like China's number one agent,
- 1:03:05and the guy accidentally targets him, and then it turns into him versus France.
- 1:03:09And everybody loved that.
- 1:03:10It's got Bridget Fonda in it.
- 1:03:13and then Unleashed came around and everybody was kind of like fatigued with
- 1:03:16Jet Li, I think, by the time that hit.
- 1:03:18And I, I agree with you though, I think it's a fantastic movie.
- 1:03:20The dog collar aspect and everything is so cool.
- 1:03:23Ryan: And you get
- 1:03:24Kearns: Hodgkin's-
- 1:03:25Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:03:25I, he's just so British, man, and it's just like that Cockney, like, Cockney.
- 1:03:30I'm sorry, not Cockney.
- 1:03:31That Cockney, like, accent.
- 1:03:34It's just, it's so brutal, and he just unleashes it.
- 1:03:36And I think this is, like, one of his last films before
- 1:03:39Kearns: Unleashed three more times, we're gonna get a sponsorship, so keep going.
- 1:03:45Ryan: Unleashed.
- 1:03:45And I'm
- 1:03:46Kearns: Gotta do it in context.
- 1:03:47Ryan: I'm gonna unleash number four, and number
- 1:03:49Kearns: Nice.
- 1:03:51Ryan: uh, Jackie Chan.
- 1:03:54Originally called Armour of the God 2, it's a sequel.
- 1:03:57Here in America it's called Operation Condor.
- 1:04:01It's
- 1:04:01Kearns: Oh,
- 1:04:02Ryan: to
- 1:04:02Kearns: okay.
- 1:04:03Ryan: Uh, Chan plays a character name, of course, Jackie, AKA Condor, who's battling
- 1:04:09against a former Nazi to retrieve gold.
- 1:04:11It's a fun Jackie Chan film.
- 1:04:13It's one of his foreign films from China where he's an absolute big star.
- 1:04:18It's fun.
- 1:04:18The stunts are, of course, insane.
- 1:04:21And I learned it has another sequel.
- 1:04:23They did actually a third film in 2012, so they finished off the
- 1:04:27trilogy, which is pretty cool.
- 1:04:30But again, it's so good.
- 1:04:32The original one came out in 1986, Armour of the God, which leads to my number
- 1:04:36three, 2012's The Man with the Iron Fists.
- 1:04:41I'm just gonna say it, RZA just he wrote it with Eli Roth.
- 1:04:47Um, Roth can survive this week, basically.
- 1:04:50We'll take him out of my deletion unit for this movie.
- 1:04:54it stars Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, Cung Le, Lucy Liu.
- 1:04:59It's just, like, 19th century China.
- 1:05:02You know, you f- follow lone warriors who are forced to unite to defeat a common
- 1:05:05foe save this village, the jungle village.
- 1:05:08So it's like, it's borrowing from so many kung fu movies,
- 1:05:12and it's really a nice homage.
- 1:05:14get a lot of the fantasy trope with the iron fists, Bautista
- 1:05:18turning into the Gold Man.
- 1:05:21there's so much.
- 1:05:22What?
- 1:05:24Jon: I always laugh when a, when a wrestler pops up in a movie.
- 1:05:28Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:29Ryan: feel like, he's a wrestler, but he's proven himself to be a good
- 1:05:34actor, like a, like a serious actor, 'cause he's worked so hard, and
- 1:05:38Kearns: Hi, Barbara.
- 1:05:54Jon: Yeah, I mean, it's a something to shoot for.
- 1:05:57I mean, he's a long way from that, but he's turned himself
- 1:06:01into a pretty good actor.
- 1:06:02Kearns: also lost a ton of his muscle recently and
- 1:06:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:05Kearns: He's decided to turn that part of his life down a bit, and I
- 1:06:08Jon: Yeah.
- 1:06:08Kearns: might actually be a good idea if he's trying to get these
- 1:06:11Jon: Yeah.
- 1:06:12Kearns: roles.
- 1:06:12Jon: Yeah.
- 1:06:13No, no more r- no more running around in wrestling rings in his underwear for him.
- 1:06:17Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:06:18Ryan: tight, and I have seen Batista live at a
- 1:06:20Jon: It's his underwear.
- 1:06:21Ryan: It's
- 1:06:22Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:23Ryan: Dude's
- 1:06:23Jon: Underwear.
- 1:06:25Ryan: Tight, and
- 1:06:25Kearns: They're all huge.
- 1:06:27Ryan: Oh.
- 1:06:28Jon: Underwear.
- 1:06:28Kearns: I just watched the video where Shawn Michaels saves the
- 1:06:30kid with Down syndrome from getting gang beat by security.
- 1:06:33Ryan: Yep.
- 1:06:34Kearns: And, um, and you'd think Shawn Michaels, he's the flyer, you know,
- 1:06:37and you think he's gonna be small.
- 1:06:38And you see him next to normal people, and you're like, "Oh, he's huge." And then
- 1:06:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:43Kearns: makes him look like he's a baby, and then the next five guys
- 1:06:46make Stone Cold look like he's a baby.
- 1:06:49So they're just all big.
- 1:06:50Ryan: think he's, like, 6'1", Shawn Michaels, which is my
- 1:06:53Jon: Yeah.
- 1:06:54Ryan: It's like they don't, like... Yeah.
- 1:06:57Jon: I think, yeah, I think he's 6'1", 6'2", yeah.
- 1:07:00Ryan: it's-- And that's considered short in the wrestling world,
- 1:07:03for back in that day, 'cause
- 1:07:05Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:07:05Ryan: like Hulk
- 1:07:06Jon: Well,
- 1:07:07Ryan: who's, like,
- 1:07:07Kearns: Like X-Pac
- 1:07:08Jon: mean,
- 1:07:08Kearns: the smallest than Sabu.
- 1:07:10Jon: for back in that day, they were also lying about
- 1:07:13everybody's height except Andre.
- 1:07:16Ryan: But yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:18Jon: Like Hogan, Hogan I think at one point was billed at like 6'8" or 6'9".
- 1:07:23Ryan: Yes, not true.
- 1:07:25He's not,
- 1:07:26Jon: No
- 1:07:27Ryan: The Undertaker's that tall.
- 1:07:28Undertaker's about 6'9", 6'8".
- 1:07:31Jon: Yeah, but he was billed at like seven when he first started.
- 1:07:35Ryan: I, yeah.
- 1:07:36Kearns: you gotta... It's like the freak show at the carnival.
- 1:07:38You gotta make them look more than-- They've gotta be titans.
- 1:07:41Ryan: Yep.
- 1:07:42Jon: Yeah.
- 1:07:42Yeah.
- 1:07:42Kearns: for better or worse, whatever you think of him these days, I drive by
- 1:07:45his place all the time over in Stanford, WWE headquarters and whatnot, and he
- 1:07:50know- he knew how to put on a show.
- 1:07:52He knew how to get the
- 1:07:53Jon: Absolutely.
- 1:07:53Absolutely.
- 1:07:55Ryan: was always entertainment.
- 1:07:57It wasn't, like WCW was wrestling, ECW was wrestling.
- 1:08:01WWE has always been entertainment, and it changed
- 1:08:05Jon: Is it in the Bronx?
- 1:08:22Ryan: in the Bronx, but it is kinda royal 'cause it's one of
- 1:08:24my favorite Jackie Chan films.
- 1:08:25It is Rumble in the Bronx, 1995.
- 1:08:29Chan is, uh, of course, a Hong Kong police officer who arrives in the
- 1:08:32Bronx area of New York City to meet his uncle and go against the local
- 1:08:36gang that's, you know, making trouble.
- 1:08:39It's so fun.
- 1:08:40I remember staying up late at night on
- 1:08:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:08:43Ryan: They used to show it at 11 o'clock, stay up, wake up the
- 1:08:46next morning Be like, yes, I just
- 1:08:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:08:48Ryan: this film.
- 1:08:49It's rated R.
- 1:08:50Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:08:50Ryan: Cool.
- 1:08:51It's just fun, and the ending is just, uh, it's just his stunts.
- 1:08:58the, the worst stunt he's ever done was going... And I don't- It's not this film,
- 1:09:01but when he slides down the, uh, glass building, and then he stops right at the
- 1:09:07end, I feel like that's the worst stunt, and this one has the second worst is when
- 1:09:11he's coming down in the hot air balloon with I think there's no, like, basket
- 1:09:16or anything, and he's just flying down.
- 1:09:18It's just, it's nuts.
- 1:09:21Jon: Yeah.
- 1:09:21Ryan: Which leads to my number one.
- 1:09:25It's a Bruce Lee film.
- 1:09:27Kearns: Mm.
- 1:09:27Ryan: famous one.
- 1:09:29Kearns: Mm.
- 1:09:29Ryan: It's Enter the Dragon.
- 1:09:32I mean, you got The
- 1:09:32john Saxon.
- 1:09:34I mean,
- 1:09:37Kearns: Do I have to
- 1:09:37Jon: Yep.
- 1:09:38Kearns: I probably have to cut that out.
- 1:09:43Both of you stayed silent.
- 1:09:45I didn't know if you heard it or not.
- 1:09:46Ryan: Oh, I heard it.
- 1:09:48Kearns: Oh, okay.
- 1:09:48We'll cut that out.
- 1:09:49Okay, keep going.
- 1:09:50I won't cut out us talking about cutting it out, though, so people can wonder.
- 1:09:54But all right.
- 1:09:54Jon: Belief
- 1:09:55Ryan: But it's just, it's good.
- 1:09:56It's like you get all these other Bruce Lee films over time, right?
- 1:10:00Uh, Fist of Fury, um, Big Boss, Chinese Connection, Way of the Dragon.
- 1:10:05And it's... Wait.
- 1:10:09the... No, no.
- 1:10:09Way of the Dragon's after.
- 1:10:10No.
- 1:10:11Way of the Dragon's Chuck Norris, so it's definitely before Enter the Dragon.
- 1:10:15Yeah.
- 1:10:16But all those films led to what Enter the Dragon is.
- 1:10:19So it was the deal with Warner Brothers, big film, put Bruce Lee
- 1:10:23more into the stardom, then Game of Death happens, no pun intended.
- 1:10:29But it's just, a really great martial arts film, and it, it hits the spot.
- 1:10:35It's got every trope, and I feel like a lot of f- uh, action films
- 1:10:40borrow from Enter the Dragon a lot.
- 1:10:44Jon: Sure, yeah.
- 1:10:45Yeah.
- 1:10:46Kearns: enough.
- 1:10:46Ryan: But that's it.
- 1:10:47That's my top five for this week.
- 1:10:48John,
- 1:10:48Kearns: Big town vibe,
- 1:10:49Jon: Thanks.
- 1:10:50Ryan: you.
- 1:10:50Uh, what's your top five, man?
- 1:10:52What is
- 1:10:53Jon: So doing Basket Case gave me the opportunity to do a top five for
- 1:10:59one of my favorite types of movie.
- 1:11:02I think it's really a genre onto itself, and it's movies, the gritty,
- 1:11:09like late '60s through early '90s, gritty, grimy New York City movies.
- 1:11:17Ryan: Chud.
- 1:11:18Jon: like legitimately some of my favorite movies ever are the--
- 1:11:24just these like, these exploitative New York City is a crime-ridden,
- 1:11:30gross place, and I love them.
- 1:11:34I love, love, love that, that New York City, which is, is
- 1:11:40weird because it's not safe.
- 1:11:41It's not a great version of the city, but I love seeing it on, in films.
- 1:11:45so my number five is a movie called Ms. 45.
- 1:11:51it's directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Zoe Lund as a woman who
- 1:11:55is, assaulted twice in the same day.
- 1:11:58the trauma propels her into a brutal world of vengeance, and the, that's
- 1:12:02the only thing that keeps her going.
- 1:12:04There's scenes where she's dressed as a nun taking revenge on the people who
- 1:12:08assaulted her, and then on any criminals.
- 1:12:12Like it, it's, it's got a lot of I Spit On Your Grave to
- 1:12:17it, but set in New York City.
- 1:12:19Ryan: It sounds like
- 1:12:20Kearns: Oh
- 1:12:20Ryan: female version of Death Wish.
- 1:12:23Jon: Yeah, kind of.
- 1:12:24Kind of, except, you know, yeah, not somebody else getting revenge for her.
- 1:12:30Ryan: Fair.
- 1:12:30Jon: yeah.
- 1:12:32Abel Ferrara's gonna return again in my number four.
- 1:12:35He stars and directs as Reno Miller in Driller Killer.
- 1:12:42so Reno is a struggling artist, not only financially, but also mentally.
- 1:12:48Uh, his life is falling apart around him.
- 1:12:50He's gonna lose his apartment, he's gonna lose everything.
- 1:12:53Everything is just going to crap for him, and he finally has his break with reality
- 1:12:58and becomes the titular Driller Killer.
- 1:13:01Ryan: dress in a construction outfit, please?
- 1:13:05Jon: Um, I don't remember there being a construction in-
- 1:13:08Ryan: hat included.
- 1:13:09If not, then we
- 1:13:10Jon: Yeah.
- 1:13:11Ryan: that.
- 1:13:11That's our, that's our film.
- 1:13:13Kearns: Oh, why you sense that?
- 1:13:15right.
- 1:13:16Jon: I mean, there's plenty of other ones with guys in hard
- 1:13:18hats, so I, I like... Y- you know.
- 1:13:23Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:13:23Jon: Um, my next one, it sort of surprised me when I, watched it because
- 1:13:30I just sort of assumed that it wasn't filmed in New York City, but it was, and
- 1:13:35it's Lucio Fulci's "New York Ripper."
- 1:13:38Kearns: Okay.
- 1:13:38Ryan: She think it was in Montreal again?
- 1:13:41Jon: no, I thought, I figured it was, like, an Italian city sort of standing in
- 1:13:45Kearns: Okay.
- 1:13:45Jon: for New York City, but, uh, it came up in one of the, the "Basket Case"
- 1:13:51documentaries where, uh, Henenlotter was touring the sites of his own movies and
- 1:13:56happened to go past one of the buildings that was featured in "New York Ripper."
- 1:14:01Uh,
- 1:14:02Ryan: That's
- 1:14:02Jon: so a serial, serial killer is prowling the streets of New
- 1:14:05York City, picking off young women and taunting the police, calling
- 1:14:09them and speaking like a duck.
- 1:14:13Kearns: Yeah,
- 1:14:15Jon: Um, a tired police detective and a psychoanalyst team up to try to catch him.
- 1:14:21I mean, it's really, like, you get a lot of the POV killer stuff, and
- 1:14:26the duck talking is, uh, like, worth the, the price of admission itself.
- 1:14:31Ryan: or Daffy?
- 1:14:32Jon: It's a d- it's a very Donald type of voice.
- 1:14:36I mean, obviously changed enough because I'm sure Disney would've
- 1:14:39sued the pants off of him if it was a direct Donald Duck impersonation.
- 1:14:44Kearns: 100%.
- 1:14:45Jon: it's, it's close enough that you know that's what they're going for.
- 1:14:48Ryan: That's great.
- 1:14:49Jon: number two is a movie called "The Exterminator."
- 1:14:53Kearns: Okay
- 1:14:53Ryan: Okay.
- 1:14:55Jon: This was one I picked up probably, uh, before "Basket Case" for sure.
- 1:14:59It used to be on HBO at a lot of weird hours.
- 1:15:02when his best friend is mugged and left paralyzed, John Eastland dons his military
- 1:15:08gear and a motorcycle helmet and embarks on an epic vigilante justice spree,
- 1:15:14first eliminating the gang responsible and then any criminal he finds.
- 1:15:21Directed by James Glickenhouse, who definitely embraced the gritty
- 1:15:26New York City of the time period.
- 1:15:28It is, it's like the full grit.
- 1:15:31Ryan: What year did that come out?
- 1:15:33Jon: Oh, like '80... Around "Basket Case," between, like, '82 and '84, I think.
- 1:15:38Ryan: it's like, I feel like he was trying to do a version of The Punisher, but he
- 1:15:43Kearns: Ooh.
- 1:15:43Ryan: so he did The Exterminator,
- 1:15:45Jon: of, kind of...
- 1:15:47Ryan: awesome because then you get years later Dolph Lundgren doing The Punisher,
- 1:15:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:15:52Kearns: Hmm.
- 1:16:06Jon: "The Warriors," it, it's not horror enough.
- 1:16:08Ryan: Okay.
- 1:16:09A, a
- 1:16:10Jon: At the end of the day, at the, at the end of the day, we are still a horror
- 1:16:14podcast, and to me that means I try to do these lists w- as much horror as possible.
- 1:16:20And it's also, it's also not "Escape From New York" because I don't feel like
- 1:16:24"Escape From New York" fits this category.
- 1:16:26Kearns: Okay.
- 1:16:27Jon: From New York" is dystopian New York City,
- 1:16:30Kearns: not...
- 1:16:30Jon: close.
- 1:16:31It's close.
- 1:16:32It's not quite this category.
- 1:16:35so my number one is Joe Spinell in "Maniac."
- 1:16:41Ryan: Okay.
- 1:16:42Yep.
- 1:16:44Kearns: How
- 1:16:44Jon: "Maniac" i-
- 1:16:45Kearns: that coming?
- 1:16:46Jon: yeah.
- 1:16:47Ryan: but...
- 1:16:48Jon: a, a, a psychotic, mother-obsessed, skin-on-mannequin serial killer?
- 1:16:54Absolutely.
- 1:16:55Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:56Yeah.
- 1:16:57Ryan: on it.
- 1:17:01Jon: level of sleaze to play Frank Zito.
- 1:17:03Like, he's gross and menacing and sweaty, and, like, he's, he's exactly the kind
- 1:17:10of person you would expect to do this.
- 1:17:13but he also managed to, get, like, a pathetic, almost sympathetic arc
- 1:17:18to his character, too, where you can almost feel bad for this guy
- 1:17:22that's so devastated about his mom.
- 1:17:25Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:17:25Jon: then he's who he is, and it's... Like, and he, like... It
- 1:17:31really also sort of played into some of the fears that existed in and
- 1:17:36around New York City at that time.
- 1:17:38'Cause, you know, you're just past the Son of Sam when "Maniac" comes out.
- 1:17:43So, like, this is a, it's a scary version of the city.
- 1:17:46Kearns: Fair
- 1:17:47Ryan: It hi- it, it hits hard though because of its release and when it
- 1:17:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:17:52Mm-hmm.
- 1:17:52Ryan: released, I feel like a lot of people went to see it because
- 1:17:55of curiosity, but I would also
- 1:17:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:17:58Ryan: of people were afraid to see it because of
- 1:18:00Jon: Abso- absolutely.
- 1:18:02Absolutely.
- 1:18:03And it's one of the rare movies I own on 4K, but I almost never watch it in 4K.
- 1:18:09Kearns: Gotcha.
- 1:18:10Jon: go-
- 1:18:10Ryan: you
- 1:18:10Jon: I try to g- no, I opened it, I watched it, but I, most of the
- 1:18:15time I wanna watch "Maniac," I go back to... Yeah, I go back to as
- 1:18:20old a version of it as I can find.
- 1:18:22If I-- I think I still have a DVD version of it.
- 1:18:25That's what I prefer to watch because it, uh, it looks beautiful in 4K, but
- 1:18:31"Maniac" shouldn't look beautiful.
- 1:18:32Ryan: You need the
- 1:18:33Kearns: Got
- 1:18:33Ryan: and the
- 1:18:34Kearns: it.
- 1:18:34Jon: Yeah.
- 1:18:35Ryan: and the
- 1:18:35Jon: Yeah.
- 1:18:36Kearns: cool.
- 1:18:36Jon: mani- "Maniac" should look grimy.
- 1:18:39Ryan: Yes.
- 1:18:39Kearns: Ladies and gentlemen, that's what you call a real enthusiast right there.
- 1:18:45This guy knows his stuff.
- 1:18:47Ryan: with him.
- 1:18:48It's like you go watch a Kurosawa film.
- 1:18:50Like, do you want it to be in color?
- 1:18:52No.
- 1:18:53Jon: No.
- 1:18:54No
- 1:18:54Ryan: white, and you want to see the graininess, and you wanna see
- 1:18:57Jon: Yeah.
- 1:18:57Ryan: almost fall off.
- 1:18:58Uh, but it's normal.
- 1:19:00Jon: Yeah.
- 1:19:00Our, our, RIP Ted Turner, but the colorization of black and
- 1:19:04white movies is something that he s- sort of helped usher in,
- 1:19:08Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:19:09Jon: and it was never really... I never enjoyed it.
- 1:19:13I, I don't wanna see you make up what you think the colors in this movie were.
- 1:19:18Ryan: It
- 1:19:19Jon: I,
- 1:19:19Ryan: doesn't work.
- 1:19:20Jon: me, give me the natural form.
- 1:19:22Kearns: It was a nice gimmick for them to try, but I
- 1:19:25Jon: Yeah.
- 1:19:25Kearns: part, the public has spoken on it.
- 1:19:26Yeah.
- 1:19:27Ryan: It's a Wonderful Life in color is not a wonderful life.
- 1:19:31to
- 1:19:31Jon: No.
- 1:19:31Ryan: and white.
- 1:19:33Jon: Colori- colorized "Night of the Living Dead," like,
- 1:19:35Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:19:36Jon: just, just not the same.
- 1:19:38Ryan: that.
- 1:19:38Jon: It's not the same.
- 1:19:39Kearns: They didn't do a
- 1:19:40Jon: Don't.
- 1:19:41Kearns: with it either.
- 1:19:41Jon: No, no, the... Yeah.
- 1:19:43Ryan: it's like The Mark of Zorro, the old Tyrone Power one when they try to
- 1:19:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:19:48Ryan: in
- 1:19:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:19:48Ryan: It... Don't, don't do it.
- 1:19:52Jon: No, don't, don't.
- 1:19:54Kearns: Maybe it had a place in 1940, but now we know better.
- 1:19:56Jon: Yeah.
- 1:19:57Kearns: Like, don't
- 1:19:57Jon: Yeah.
- 1:19:58Yeah.
- 1:19:59Kearns: just regenerate it with AI anyway.
- 1:20:01Ryan: but it
- 1:20:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:20:01Almost.
- 1:20:02Ryan: for the universal Phantom of the Opera from 1942.
- 1:20:06They colorized it and it worked.
- 1:20:08That one
- 1:20:08Kearns: Okay.
- 1:20:09Ryan: is weird, 'cause that was the only film that worked, and it was horror,
- 1:20:13Jon: Almost.
- 1:20:13Kearns: Hmm.
- 1:20:16Da, da, da.
- 1:20:17All right, guys.
- 1:20:18Well, that is Basket Case for us this week.
- 1:20:21Jon: But
- 1:20:21Kearns: get out of here 'cause
- 1:20:22Jon: we, we
- 1:20:22Kearns: a long episode on a really interesting movie,
- 1:20:24but an hour-and-a-half movie.
- 1:20:28The episode for the
- 1:20:29Jon: had
- 1:20:29Kearns: is longer than the film.
- 1:20:31So,
- 1:20:31Jon: good time.
- 1:20:32We got to some interesting things.
- 1:20:38Enjoy this episode, guys.
- 1:20:39Kearns: sir.
- 1:20:40Ryan: and like and subscribe.
- 1:20:41Come on now.
- 1:20:44Jon: Yeah.
- 1:20:44Kearns: Later
- 1:20:46Ryan: Deuces.
- 1:20:48Jon: See ya.
