- 0:09In the kitchen you decide
- 0:32What's going on, everybody?
- 0:33Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 0:36My name is Scott Schweitzer.
- 0:37I'm the Clydesdale.
- 0:39She is Julie Schaefer,
- 0:42CrossFit Games Masters
- 0:43athlete in the 55 to
- 0:4659-year-old division.
- 0:47Is that right?
- 0:48That's correct.
- 0:49That's correct.
- 0:51Congratulations on that.
- 0:53Thank you.
- 0:55And this is your rookie season.
- 0:56It is rookie.
- 0:57It's kind of funny when
- 0:59you're talking about 55 to
- 1:0059 year olds rookie season.
- 1:01Yes.
- 1:03So you've been doing CrossFit since, well,
- 1:06at least the open since 2014.
- 1:07Yep.
- 1:07I actually started in like 2009, but yeah,
- 1:11didn't really think about
- 1:14going in the open and being
- 1:15able to do kind of RX until 14, 15.
- 1:17So, so you're like, Oh gee, Oh gee.
- 1:23I guess so.
- 1:23Yeah.
- 1:23It was a small gym in
- 1:25Madison with Keisha and Skip Benzing.
- 1:29I don't know if you know,
- 1:31but in Madtown CrossFit.
- 1:32So yeah,
- 1:32they kind of stumbled into it like
- 1:34everybody else does.
- 1:36So you were,
- 1:37you started in Wisconsin and
- 1:41you make your first games
- 1:42when it moved away from Wisconsin.
- 1:44Right.
- 1:45I was so hoping I've been
- 1:46trying for a while to make the games.
- 1:48And I was like,
- 1:49I want to go when it was in Madison.
- 1:50And of course I make it and
- 1:51we're not in Madison.
- 1:54Still awesome to make it.
- 1:55It is,
- 1:56but I would have had a better
- 1:57cheering section, I think.
- 1:59Yeah, yeah.
- 2:01Where are you located now?
- 2:02In New Jersey.
- 2:04Okay.
- 2:05In New Jersey.
- 2:06And did I see you go to CrossFit Roseland?
- 2:08I do.
- 2:10That's where I'm at right now,
- 2:11CrossFit Roseland.
- 2:12And so Mark Juan Jones is
- 2:15working out with him.
- 2:16He's my inspiration.
- 2:18Yeah, great guy too.
- 2:21Yep.
- 2:21So, sorry.
- 2:23answer.
- 2:25Um,
- 2:25so so what is your athletic background?
- 2:29Or did you not have one?
- 2:32No,
- 2:32I would say I was fairly athletic in
- 2:35high school.
- 2:36Played the three sports.
- 2:37You know,
- 2:38that was back when you could
- 2:39actually play three sports, you know,
- 2:40in a season.
- 2:43You had, you know, the fall, the winter,
- 2:45and the spring seasons.
- 2:47And then in college,
- 2:49I was in Marine Corps ROTC,
- 2:51in the Navy ROTC.
- 2:52And so, obviously,
- 2:53you have to stay physically fit for that.
- 2:54And then through my – I was
- 2:56in the Marine Corps for 30 years.
- 2:58So, just –
- 2:59you know have to be
- 3:00physically fit and they
- 3:01have fitness tests every
- 3:02year for those and it was I
- 3:05just I just loved always
- 3:06being active and working
- 3:08out so I'm going to try to
- 3:09guess the three sports
- 3:12volleyball basketball softball
- 3:16My school was really, really small.
- 3:19So we didn't even have
- 3:21softball at the time.
- 3:23I played, we ran cross country.
- 3:25My sophomore year is the
- 3:26inaugural year that they
- 3:27actually had cross country.
- 3:28Before that was a cheerleader.
- 3:29I tried that for one thing
- 3:30that didn't really work out really well,
- 3:32but I did play basketball and then track.
- 3:36Okay.
- 3:37Okay.
- 3:38What did you do distance and
- 3:39track being a cross country runner?
- 3:41Yeah.
- 3:41800 mile to mile.
- 3:45Oh, the boring stuff.
- 3:48Yep.
- 3:49Do you,
- 3:49do you follow the elite CrossFit
- 3:51athletes?
- 3:52I do some, some of them.
- 3:54Um, I'm, you know,
- 3:55I don't know the names all
- 3:57of them all the time, but yeah, well,
- 3:58mostly the women and the men, I guess.
- 4:01Yeah.
- 4:01When they released the 1600, if it,
- 4:05if that gets released at
- 4:06the masters games, would you get excited?
- 4:09Um, actually normally I would,
- 4:12but the last year, two years,
- 4:13I've really struggled with, uh,
- 4:15some knee arthritis.
- 4:17So it has cut my running
- 4:18down significantly, but yes,
- 4:20normally like that would
- 4:21have been a year ago.
- 4:22I would have been a static.
- 4:23So yes, that would, that would,
- 4:25those were any running was
- 4:26my go-to before kind of
- 4:29knee issues as we all get older.
- 4:31So, so you went into the Marine,
- 4:35you went into the Marines after ROTC?
- 4:36Yeah.
- 4:38Was it your military
- 4:39background that helped you
- 4:40find CrossFit or did you
- 4:42find it another way?
- 4:43Well,
- 4:43just always wanting to be physically
- 4:46fit and being able to take care of the
- 4:51know be better at being a
- 4:53marine and trying to find
- 4:54stuff that worked like a
- 4:55full body workout you know
- 4:57the core all the way to the
- 4:58extremities and I just was
- 5:00doing some research and I
- 5:01happened to kind of see
- 5:02this new thing called
- 5:03crossfit and there was a
- 5:04gym about two miles down
- 5:06the road so I stopped in
- 5:07and there you have it how
- 5:10long did it take you to fall in love
- 5:12I'm not very long.
- 5:13Um, yeah, I just, I,
- 5:15I'd never held a bar like that before.
- 5:17Like any of the Olympic
- 5:18lifts are powerless, you know,
- 5:20coming up in our age, my age group,
- 5:23you know, it's small school.
- 5:25Again, we never had the opportunity to, to,
- 5:28to do that.
- 5:29And it just makes you,
- 5:29they made me feel so much
- 5:31stronger and powerful.
- 5:32I was like, Hey,
- 5:32I can pick up this body and
- 5:34move my body around this
- 5:34bar and lift this weight.
- 5:36And so, yeah.
- 5:39So what would you consider
- 5:41to be your wheelhouse movements?
- 5:44I would say any body weight movements.
- 5:48I am short.
- 5:50I am little.
- 5:52And so anytime you put lots
- 5:54of weight or having to do a
- 5:55lot of weight and move that,
- 5:56it slows me down a little bit.
- 5:57But if you just gave me my
- 5:58body and like gymnastics movement,
- 6:00handstand pushups, things like that,
- 6:03where I can just move.
- 6:06That would save my wheelhouse.
- 6:07That's why running normally
- 6:08would be good too.
- 6:10But even when you're putting on the vest,
- 6:11that takes a little bit more,
- 6:13but it's good.
- 6:16So at what point in your
- 6:18CrossFit life did you
- 6:23realize you could be good
- 6:24at this and do some competitions?
- 6:27I don't know.
- 6:30It was probably...
- 6:32I'd have to go back and look
- 6:33at my open records of like, yo, hey,
- 6:35I actually did the open.
- 6:36I completed it with, you know,
- 6:38doing RX and not scaling it.
- 6:40And it was probably just a
- 6:43couple years ago.
- 6:43I was like, hey,
- 6:44I'm going to try this competition thing.
- 6:45I think I went to the Fizz
- 6:47Experience in Texas.
- 6:48It was one of the first ones I went to,
- 6:50and I was like, hey, you know,
- 6:52I should just try this.
- 6:53You know, it's right down the road.
- 6:55And so I did the qualifications for it,
- 6:56and I made it,
- 6:57and that was kind of just surprising.
- 7:00And so...
- 7:03I don't know,
- 7:03probably about four or five years.
- 7:05And then I kind of get the bug of like,
- 7:06okay, I really like to, to compete.
- 7:09I think I do better in
- 7:10person than I do even
- 7:11online just because of the
- 7:12energy levels that you get,
- 7:14the game speed.
- 7:17But so I just,
- 7:19I think it's a lot of fun to
- 7:20go there and compete.
- 7:21And you know,
- 7:21if you go out at a gym and you know,
- 7:23I think I'm all good or I'm
- 7:24doing really well.
- 7:25And then you go to these
- 7:25competitions and you have all these,
- 7:27these women that are just crushing it.
- 7:29It's like, this is awesome.
- 7:32So what competitions are
- 7:34available to you Masters athletes?
- 7:37Well, there was the Fins Experience,
- 7:39and I think they still have
- 7:40a Masters division.
- 7:41Guadalupe is a nice one.
- 7:45I've been to that one.
- 7:46And then the Open.
- 7:47I know there's a few.
- 7:48I think there might be a few others.
- 7:50I don't think I've done any anymore.
- 7:54Because normally they
- 7:56consider Masters like 35
- 7:57and older or something, and I'm like,
- 7:59okay.
- 8:00You did Legends last year, correct?
- 8:02Oh, that's right.
- 8:02It was Legends,
- 8:03and I also did the Masters
- 8:05Fitness Collective.
- 8:06Okay.
- 8:06I stumbled on those.
- 8:10Also, I mean, I don't know.
- 8:12As you get the competition bug.
- 8:14Yeah, I've been to every MFC,
- 8:17and I was at Legends last year,
- 8:21which that facility was just gorgeous.
- 8:23It was.
- 8:24It was nice.
- 8:25And what I loved about that,
- 8:26there was no machines.
- 8:28Yeah.
- 8:28Oh, there was?
- 8:29There was no machines in that one.
- 8:31So for me, again, being a little person,
- 8:34a little smaller in frame,
- 8:36it's harder on machines.
- 8:39So the one drawback there
- 8:40was just no warm-up area.
- 8:42Yeah, that's true.
- 8:44But now you're going to be in a big arena.
- 8:46I'm excited.
- 8:48Have you been there?
- 8:50I've not been to the location,
- 8:51but I've heard nothing but
- 8:53great things about the arena.
- 8:55We did.
- 8:57Yeah.
- 8:58So, um,
- 8:59and I've heard from people who live
- 9:00in the Birmingham area that it's awesome.
- 9:03Yeah.
- 9:04Kind of like I went to granite games.
- 9:06I did that and I had a
- 9:07really nice big one where
- 9:08we actually had our whole
- 9:09separate kind of arena.
- 9:11And then they did all the
- 9:12competitions kind of out on
- 9:14the field in the stage.
- 9:18If you're running a master's competition,
- 9:20warmup is important.
- 9:22We are old.
- 9:26You need to lubricate those
- 9:27joints a little more than
- 9:28your average athlete.
- 9:30Yeah.
- 9:30Some people say,
- 9:31how much longer do you spend at the gym?
- 9:32I'm like, well,
- 9:33working out or like warming up included.
- 9:35Cause that's a very, like you said, very,
- 9:37very important.
- 9:39Yeah.
- 9:40Yeah.
- 9:40So, um, so I,
- 9:43I was looking through your
- 9:44Instagram a little bit and
- 9:46I found this really cool
- 9:48shirt that you put together
- 9:50and I'm going to pull that
- 9:51up for everybody to see.
- 9:52I have a question about it.
- 9:56So, and then I was scrolling.
- 10:00I lost it.
- 10:02Let's, there we go.
- 10:05So I don't know if people can see this.
- 10:08It'll come back here in a second.
- 10:10But it says, shoot, it keeps flashing.
- 10:16I'm going to try to pause at
- 10:19the right moment.
- 10:20There we go.
- 10:22It says Tiny Titan.
- 10:25Yes.
- 10:26Is that a nickname?
- 10:27It is a nickname.
- 10:28Yeah.
- 10:29I got that from Veronica.
- 10:31She was actually in the army
- 10:32when we were in Kuwait together.
- 10:34And after working out, she's like,
- 10:35you're like a little tiny Titan.
- 10:37And so since then,
- 10:38it's kind of been a nickname.
- 10:42Who designed the shirt?
- 10:43It's awesome.
- 10:44Yes.
- 10:45That's also Juan Cortez.
- 10:49He's also, he was in San Antonio.
- 10:51We've like moved all over the place.
- 10:52So he was one of an artist in San Antonio.
- 10:56And Juan did that for me.
- 10:58As soon as we talked about
- 10:59fundraising t-shirts and everything else,
- 11:00he's the first one I thought of.
- 11:01I'm like, hey, because he's so creative.
- 11:03I said, that's what I want.
- 11:04I want a tiny Titan, you know,
- 11:06Titan theme.
- 11:06I don't know, just something.
- 11:07And it has CrossFit Games on.
- 11:08That's what he created.
- 11:09It's pretty awesome.
- 11:12It's almost like Athena,
- 11:13the goddess of war, right?
- 11:15Yeah, I guess.
- 11:16Yeah.
- 11:17Yeah.
- 11:18Pretty cool.
- 11:19I really, really thought that was awesome.
- 11:23And you were given that when
- 11:24you were serving overseas, the nickname.
- 11:27The nickname, yeah.
- 11:30How many deployments did you do?
- 11:34two kind of deployments
- 11:36three well I had like one
- 11:38stateside after like 9 11
- 11:40we were kind of a backup
- 11:41unit so you know deployed
- 11:43but we never went overseas
- 11:44but you're kind of away
- 11:45from your home and your
- 11:46family uh then I did go
- 11:48over uh you know to iraq
- 11:51and then I've been to
- 11:52kuwait and then recently
- 11:54though my hard deployment
- 11:55was when I went to germany
- 11:56so okay um jody lynn says
- 12:00uh the shirt is art deco-ish
- 12:03And very much so.
- 12:06One should be proud.
- 12:07He did really well.
- 12:09So how,
- 12:09how long did you serve or are you
- 12:11still serving?
- 12:12I served 30 years.
- 12:14I retired in 21 and that's
- 12:17kind of where I was like, okay, now I'm,
- 12:18what am I doing with my time?
- 12:20And I was able to, you know,
- 12:22kind of come to the gym and
- 12:24warm up longer and, you know,
- 12:26kind of do a specific programming.
- 12:31What, what job did you do for the Marines?
- 12:34was a logistics officer okay
- 12:36yeah so the logistics
- 12:38officer and then when I was
- 12:38deployed I did some civil
- 12:40affairs um and then kind of
- 12:43you just do eyes and ends
- 12:44when you're trying to get
- 12:46special you don't you have
- 12:47a specialty logistics but
- 12:49you can you get stuck doing
- 12:50anything staff work yeah
- 12:52I've family members that
- 12:54have served say that you
- 12:55have a job but then you you
- 12:57just do whatever they tell
- 12:57you to do anyway pretty much yeah
- 13:01But I was very fortunate.
- 13:02I had some really good
- 13:03commands and really good
- 13:04times and met some awesome people.
- 13:07It was a really good
- 13:11opportunity for me that I took.
- 13:12They paid for my school and
- 13:13I just stayed in.
- 13:14I did some reserve time too,
- 13:17but a total of 30 years.
- 13:19What did you get your degree in?
- 13:21Operational, organizational behavior.
- 13:24Although I always said it
- 13:25was making people do what
- 13:27they don't want to do and be good at it.
- 13:28And I'm like, perfect.
- 13:29That's what you got to do with Marines,
- 13:30right?
- 13:32Right, right.
- 13:33And I take it you enjoyed your time.
- 13:35I did.
- 13:36Yeah, it was good.
- 13:37I mean, it's always a challenge, you know,
- 13:39again, you know, just having the,
- 13:42you know,
- 13:42there's not a lot of women in
- 13:43the Marine Corps.
- 13:45Not a lot of, you know,
- 13:46just being shorter and smaller.
- 13:48Again, it's just always that fight to,
- 13:50you know, try to,
- 13:52prove myself that I could, I can do this.
- 13:54I can, you know,
- 13:56I can physically be part of
- 13:59this unit and hold my own weight.
- 14:00So everybody brings
- 14:02different qualities to the things.
- 14:04You know, obviously I can't,
- 14:05you can't put a 400 pound pack on me,
- 14:07but I can, you know,
- 14:09crawl under things faster and whatever.
- 14:11You're 375.
- 14:13You're good.
- 14:13400.
- 14:13That's too much.
- 14:18Exactly.
- 14:19Do you have like a big
- 14:21booming voice to command a presence?
- 14:24No, I don't.
- 14:25I rely on my sorry major for that.
- 14:31I'm not.
- 14:32Organizational behavior degree.
- 14:35Yes.
- 14:35Business organizational behavior.
- 14:38Awesome.
- 14:41So this season,
- 14:43was it your goal to make
- 14:45the games the whole time?
- 14:47Yes, it was.
- 14:48I mean,
- 14:48it was my goal to make the games
- 14:49last year and the year before.
- 14:53And this year it was just awesome.
- 14:56Everything just kind of came together.
- 14:59I've been trying, like, last year,
- 15:00and I only made it to semifinals.
- 15:02I didn't make it all the way through.
- 15:03Like I said,
- 15:03I was hoping to go because it
- 15:04was in Madison.
- 15:05And not that I'm giving up, but, again,
- 15:10just trying to get through
- 15:12the qualifications to get there.
- 15:14I mean, it's tough.
- 15:14I mean,
- 15:14there's a lot of great women out there,
- 15:16and there's usually a max
- 15:18weight or something heavy qualifier,
- 15:20and that usually knocks me
- 15:22out and happened to be that
- 15:23the semifinals –
- 15:25and it all came together
- 15:26that there was a heavy lift
- 15:28it was a snatch it was I
- 15:29hit it twice it was a pr so
- 15:31I was happy I was just
- 15:32stoked on that um so but
- 15:36luckily it didn't knock me
- 15:37out too far so when you did
- 15:41the open this year uh be
- 15:44friendly fitness did some
- 15:45analysis and there was a
- 15:47lot of talk about what
- 15:48colton mertens did in 24.1
- 15:51and how dominating it was
- 15:53over the rest of the field in the open.
- 15:57What many people don't know
- 15:59is you actually had an even
- 16:02more dominating performance
- 16:03in 24.1 than Colton did in
- 16:06your age group.
- 16:08Yes.
- 16:09That one was in my wheelhouse.
- 16:13And that was the burpee over
- 16:16barbell or burpee over dumbbell.
- 16:18It was just a burpee over, was it?
- 16:22Yeah.
- 16:22Over.
- 16:22And then the snatch.
- 16:24Yeah.
- 16:25And luckily again, with the masters,
- 16:26we were,
- 16:26they had the weight that they had for us.
- 16:29I can't remember.
- 16:29It was 25 pounds.
- 16:30It was,
- 16:31so it knocked it down because if it
- 16:32would have been like a 35 pound dumbbell,
- 16:35it would have been a little bit harder.
- 16:37But because I can burpee, I can burpee.
- 16:39And again,
- 16:40usually then I have to make up
- 16:41on my burpees for the lift.
- 16:44But it just so happened the
- 16:45snatch wasn't too bad.
- 16:46That was fun.
- 16:49I take it you're really fast at burpees.
- 16:51I don't know if I'm really fast.
- 16:54I mean, I can burpees.
- 16:55And part of me, I think,
- 16:56is you just got to keep going.
- 16:58I mean, you just can't think about it.
- 16:59You just got to do the next one.
- 17:02So you said you don't know if you're fast,
- 17:04but...
- 17:05Everybody was in awe of what Colton did.
- 17:07You doubled his performance
- 17:09index on that particular workout.
- 17:13You had to be fine.
- 17:15Yeah.
- 17:15I think I, I ended up because just,
- 17:17I know all the stuff around
- 17:18the drama around sometimes like, Oh,
- 17:20did you really do it?
- 17:21I, I think I, I opened my link,
- 17:24the thing for public for a while.
- 17:26I shut it down now, but yeah,
- 17:28just to show people, yes, I did it.
- 17:31Yeah.
- 17:32What was your time?
- 17:34Was it 6-13 or something?
- 17:36I don't remember.
- 17:38That was so long ago.
- 17:40That is crazy, crazy time.
- 17:44Yeah,
- 17:44that was... So that's the first event
- 17:48you did for this season.
- 17:49What kind of confidence did
- 17:51that give you going forward?
- 17:52I mean, it was awesome.
- 17:55It was kind of like, wow, that...
- 17:59I didn't think you'd ever
- 18:01win an open workout.
- 18:02So that was just,
- 18:03it did give me a lot of confidence.
- 18:04But then again, I was like, oh,
- 18:05all I got to do is the next
- 18:06one and I'm going to get like shot down.
- 18:08I can't remember what kind
- 18:10of lift or something there was.
- 18:11And I'm like, you know, it all,
- 18:13like CrossFit said,
- 18:13it all kind of plays out in the end of,
- 18:16you know,
- 18:16one might be good for you in one thing,
- 18:18but it evens out on something else.
- 18:22So you make it, um, two quarters,
- 18:25you finished 20.
- 18:25Uh, I don't even have that number.
- 18:29Nevermind.
- 18:29Uh,
- 18:30you finished 13th though in semifinals
- 18:35and with the new layout,
- 18:36like more than 10 get to go to the games,
- 18:39which is awesome.
- 18:40Yeah.
- 18:41I made it.
- 18:41That's yeah.
- 18:44That does really help.
- 18:4510 was always way too small
- 18:48for an online competition.
- 18:50Um,
- 18:51Because you just don't know
- 18:52what reality is when you're
- 18:54doing online comps.
- 18:56Yep.
- 18:56And now you get to go show
- 18:58what you can do in person.
- 19:00Yeah.
- 19:03I do like that.
- 19:03You know,
- 19:03everybody's held to the same
- 19:05standards or closer.
- 19:08It's the same environment,
- 19:09the same everything.
- 19:11What I loved about Legends
- 19:12when we did that is they
- 19:13did not release the workouts.
- 19:15And I don't know what
- 19:15they're going to do this year with –
- 19:17the CrossFit Games, the Masters Games.
- 19:20But you remember in Legends,
- 19:21they didn't release our
- 19:22workouts until Wednesday
- 19:23night at the athlete
- 19:24briefing for the next two days.
- 19:25And then Friday we went for Saturday.
- 19:26And I love that because it's like, okay,
- 19:28you can't really prepare.
- 19:30You just have to show up and
- 19:31see what you got, you know.
- 19:34Yeah.
- 19:35I just asked the last person
- 19:36I interviewed if they liked
- 19:37that idea of waiting for
- 19:39the release or to get it ahead of time.
- 19:41And they were like, absolutely not.
- 19:42I hate it when they wait.
- 19:44I want to know them all now.
- 19:46And I want to be able to get
- 19:47my head around it.
- 19:48See original CrossFit though.
- 19:50You showed up that morning
- 19:52at the gym and you didn't
- 19:53know what your workout was
- 19:54going to be until you showed up to class.
- 19:58She admitted she was type a
- 20:00and that that's the way she was.
- 20:01But, um,
- 20:04And she was like,
- 20:04I don't even care if I
- 20:06don't practice them.
- 20:07I just need to know I can do them.
- 20:10Yeah.
- 20:11I like the challenge of it's go time.
- 20:16Go.
- 20:16Can you do it?
- 20:18Figure it out on the fly.
- 20:22I like it too.
- 20:24I think that especially with online,
- 20:26too many people repeat.
- 20:28Too many people do redos.
- 20:29When you're in a competition,
- 20:30you don't get a redo.
- 20:32Right.
- 20:33It's one shot and you're done.
- 20:35Yep.
- 20:36And either you pick the
- 20:37right strategy or you didn't.
- 20:40Yeah.
- 20:40But you have the benefit of
- 20:41also seeing other people's
- 20:42strategy kind of unfolding
- 20:44at the same time.
- 20:48So you went to legends last year.
- 20:50How did you do?
- 20:51Uh, fourth or fifth, fifth, maybe.
- 20:57I don't, I don't remember.
- 21:00And it was a big competition,
- 21:01and that was their programming.
- 21:05Do you take more from that
- 21:07than even what you're doing
- 21:08this year during the season?
- 21:11You mean like looking at
- 21:13what their holiday programs?
- 21:15Yeah.
- 21:17Not really.
- 21:19I mean, actually, my programming coach,
- 21:23I don't know exactly.
- 21:24I mean, he might look at some of that,
- 21:26but I don't know exactly.
- 21:28But a lot of the stuff they did, I mean,
- 21:30they did burpees.
- 21:31It was all a lot of bar work.
- 21:33Surprisingly,
- 21:33we only got in the bar one time,
- 21:34and that was for the bar muscle-ups.
- 21:37And then, you know, I liked the program.
- 21:40It seemed like there was a
- 21:41lot of squats and a lot of
- 21:43shoulder overhead.
- 21:45But, you know, that's what CrossFit is,
- 21:48too.
- 21:49Yeah, yeah.
- 21:52What are your realistic
- 21:53expectations for yourself this year?
- 21:55I...
- 21:59I want to be healthy going into the games.
- 22:00Like I said, you know,
- 22:01your body holds together
- 22:03for a little bit longer.
- 22:05I really just want to have
- 22:06fun and enjoy the moment.
- 22:10Again,
- 22:10it will totally depend on the
- 22:12workouts that come out.
- 22:13I mean, if they're body, some body weight,
- 22:15I'm hoping that I can crush
- 22:16those and then I can hang
- 22:19on to the ones that have
- 22:19the heavier lifts.
- 22:23and kind of stay together
- 22:27and actually finish.
- 22:29I mean,
- 22:29I would love to be able to be in
- 22:31the top 50%.
- 22:34Top 10 would be like,
- 22:35I couldn't believe it.
- 22:36But again,
- 22:37that's all been independent of
- 22:38what programs there are.
- 22:42So my final question is,
- 22:43who are you taking with you
- 22:44to Birmingham?
- 22:46So my husband,
- 22:47who's my biggest cheerleader,
- 22:48will be there.
- 22:50He needs the loudest in the crowd,
- 22:52so that's good.
- 22:53But Coach Klon, he's going to come down.
- 22:55He's my coach for the weekend,
- 22:58and his wife are coming.
- 22:59And then I have some friends
- 23:01kind of in the area that will stop by.
- 23:02But other than that, I mean,
- 23:03it's a long trip to go to Birmingham.
- 23:05Yeah, but with the Marines,
- 23:09you've lived all over the country.
- 23:10You can pull people from Texas.
- 23:12Yeah, you have people like, hey,
- 23:14who's there?
- 23:15They show up.
- 23:18i hope we can bring a lot of
- 23:19people to birmingham and
- 23:21really show out for these
- 23:22amazing athletes yeah like
- 23:24yourself because um you
- 23:26guys deserve it yeah
- 23:29hopefully I'll put pack a
- 23:29crowd in there it'll be
- 23:30good so yeah there are some
- 23:33amazing even yeah every age
- 23:36group has its like
- 23:38competitions going on so
- 23:41So Corey needs hearing aids.
- 23:43He said, Coach Klein from the Waterboy.
- 23:47No, she said Coach Kwan.
- 23:49You missed the beginning.
- 23:51Marquand Jones is her coach
- 23:54and the owner of her
- 23:56affiliate there in New Jersey.
- 24:00He's kind of fit.
- 24:02He's kind of fit.
- 24:03So, you know,
- 24:03that's why when you think I'm,
- 24:05when I have a house in
- 24:07Wisconsin that we go up to
- 24:08in the summertime,
- 24:09although this summer I'm
- 24:10back here specifically so I
- 24:11can work out with him and the group.
- 24:13Because when I'm working out by yourself,
- 24:14you know, you think, oh yeah, I'm good.
- 24:15And then you come out here,
- 24:16even like burpees, I think I'm fast.
- 24:18And then you go there and you're like,
- 24:19okay,
- 24:20I got to step up my burpee game now too.
- 24:23So yeah,
- 24:24he's a great motivation and just
- 24:25having the, you know, the family,
- 24:27the crew to work out with
- 24:28here is awesome.
- 24:31cory says marquand is
- 24:32awesome and apologizes you
- 24:34can follow me find him um so
- 24:39So you're bringing your husband,
- 24:40and Marquand's coming down,
- 24:42which is awesome.
- 24:44We're going to be there.
- 24:45We've got full permission to
- 24:47go behind the scenes,
- 24:49and we're going to do a
- 24:49behind the scenes of the
- 24:50Masters CrossFit Games,
- 24:52just like they do for the elite athletes.
- 24:57Ellie Hiller and myself will
- 24:58be back in the warm-up area
- 24:59and in the back just having
- 25:02conversations with everybody,
- 25:04and we'll put it out as a
- 25:04documentary after it's all over.
- 25:07be awesome that'd be good I
- 25:08saw you at a syndicate
- 25:10crown too because I was
- 25:11there watching okay yeah
- 25:14yeah yeah I i interviewed
- 25:16mark one at uh syndicate
- 25:17crown did you yeah yeah it
- 25:20is uh prince purple rain
- 25:21t-shirt yes that's right
- 25:24yeah um jody lynn I thought
- 25:26I heard that midwestern
- 25:27wisconsin accent did I yeah
- 25:32were you just in michigan did I see I was
- 25:37Yeah, we were up there for Fresh Coast,
- 25:39which is a competition held
- 25:42on the beach of Lake Michigan.
- 25:45Yeah, we were on Lake Michigan also,
- 25:47but on the Wisconsin side.
- 25:49Okay.
- 25:50Yeah, this one was my co-host, Jamie,
- 25:52who's competing in Birmingham.
- 25:55She was competing.
- 25:57And then Rich Froning and
- 25:58Dan Bailey showed up to compete.
- 26:00with some other guys from
- 26:01mayhem and we got some
- 26:03footage of that and some stuff.
- 26:06So that was kind of my dry
- 26:07run for the masters CrossFit games.
- 26:13At least this time I won't
- 26:14have to run through sand.
- 26:16Yeah.
- 26:17Hopefully you never know.
- 26:20Yeah.
- 26:21Not a lot.
- 26:25Well, Julie,
- 26:26thank you so much for being with us.
- 26:28Thank you to everybody in the chat.

- 26:40Thank you, Julie.

- 26:42time on the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 26:48Bye, guys.
