- 0:00This is me for Female Startup Club. Hey, it's Dune here, your host and hype girl. First of all, I'm just so grateful that you're tuning in here today because I have some absolute cracking resources for you this week and some updates as per the use.
- 0:20You might notice that my voice is a bit croaky and I just feel like this is my life now. I feel like I always have a croaky voice and maybe that's never going to change because I talk too much. So it's a real shame. Sorry in advance.
- 0:36Let's get into it. Number one. Now, you might have already heard about this because I spoke about it on the show recently, but there's this Chrome extension called Goodbye. And not goodbye as in like, hey, I'm saying goodbye to you. It's goodbye as in good, bye, B-U-Y, goodbye.
- 0:54And actually, you might remember I interviewed her on the show recently, the founder, Kara Oppenheimer. Basically, the gist is that it helps you shop with online small businesses based on your values. So like if you're someone who specifically wants to shop women-owned small businesses, black-owned small businesses, sustainable small businesses, or things like vegan and cruelty-free. There's actually a whole bunch of them, maybe like 12, I would say.
- 1:23You essentially sign up, you choose your values. It's free to use. And basically when you're browsing these big websites like Amazon or Target, it'll just pop up and show you where you can buy the exact same thing or similar, but from a very small business owner. Well, not a very small business owner, just a small business owner.
- 1:44It's super, super cool. And I've actually been using it a lot recently because I often go on Amazon and it's not for things that I need in a time sensitive way. I don't need it quickly. So I'm happy to wait, you know, based on the small business owner shipping times. And why it's also really cool is that it allows you to discover new stores that you actually wouldn't have seen before.
- 2:07And I know you might be thinking this because I thought this in the beginning. You're probably thinking, yeah, but it's not going to bring up actually what I want. But the thing is, is that they have 183,000 small businesses in the directory. So actually, you're bound to find the same thing, probably literally the exact same thing. That's been my experience so far. And discover these new cool brands and new cool stuff while you're at it.
- 2:33Absolutely love it. Need a shout about it. Probably will shout about it a million times again. Anyone who I know loves to shop these kind of values-based small business owners, I tell them about this Chrome extension. And I just really can't believe that it didn't exist before. It's kind of weird to me. Anyway, that's number one. Number two, Nick Sharma's Sunday newsletter. I hope you're already subscribed to this. I hope when you hear this, you're like, yeah, yeah, I already know about that.
- 3:01Because it's so great. This is a super tactical industry focused newsletter if you're building a D2C brand. Every Sunday, Nick breaks down something to help you out on the journey. Last week, he did a newsletter specifically around organic TikTok marketing, which you should absolutely be starting immediately if you aren't on the platform already.
- 3:20And he breaks down a content strategy literally for brand owners in the D2C space. It's very cool. And I have to say, I'm personally just getting back into TikTok and I'm posting three times a day, which is a lot. But I promise you, it is worth it and it's going to be worth it for future you and future your brand.
- 3:41I've basically committed myself to carving out two hours a day for content creation when it comes to TikTok and IG Reels. And I try to make as many as possible in that window of time. So I try to do some really quick ones. I try to do some longer ones. I basically try to do a variation so that A, I can test what works and what doesn't work. B, I have like my kind of content series or my buckets that I just like create in that series to keep it simple. So...
- 4:09I promise you it's worth it. You've got to get started. I know it's a lot, but I don't know. I feel like the crazy potential that TikTok gives small business owners is just like something you don't want to miss. I'm really committed to building an audience on TikTok ahead of my book launch at the end of February. So like I really have that goal in sight, but all I can say for everyone listening is that if you don't have TikTok already,
- 4:34You need it. You just need to be on it. You need to be posting there and reels. You need to be doing all the things. This is the future. And so promise me you'll get started and promise me you'll sign up to Nick's newsletter because the actual point here, I should say, is Nick Sharma's Sunday newsletter. It's genius.
- 4:52But while we're on the topic of TikTok, number three, there's a woman called Latinapreneur on TikTok. And she is this coach and producer that helps women find their voice on TikTok. She helps you with content strategy, all that kind of good stuff. She works with both brands and creators. So if you're needing some more guidance, I would recommend going and checking out her content. If you like her, it's a real vibe and...
- 5:15you should tune into what she's doing. She has a lot of free resources, but she also has opportunities that come up from time to time where you can actually work with her as a coach.
- 5:24Number four, Harry Dry. Harry Dry is this superstar copywriter and he has this website called marketingexamples.com. Basically, when you sign up to his newsletter, you'll get this like drip feed week worth of content, which is super valuable for D2C brand owners because it kind of breaks down what you need to have on your landing page, how you should be approaching like your...
- 5:50key headlines on your website to make sure that people truly understand what you're talking about and you're not just saying a mix of like kind of jargon words that people don't really understand. So he sends you that and then every month he sends you a bit of a breakdown on specific examples that he's found that are really useful and you should use as inspiration.
- 6:11But basically, he went off the grid for a while and he's put together this incredible slash free resource that gives you all of the world's best copy in one place. And so you can go there to find seriously useful examples of marketing copy that will help guide you in how you're approaching your own copy. And obviously, in today's world, storytelling and copywriting is just one of those skills you need to either master or hire for alongside.
- 6:39things like TikTok and video content. So super useful. I love it. I check it out all the time. Highly recommend subscribing to his content.
- 6:48And then number five, this is actually for my Aussie women who are tuning in. I'm recently obsessed with this podcast in Australia called Two Broke Chicks by Alex and Sally. It's a podcast and an Instagram account under the umbrella of finder.com, and it's all geared towards shopping deals and money hacks and all this kind of thing. And it's actually less of an industry podcast and more something I actually listen to for pleasure because...
- 7:16These girls are just so hilarious and so real and I just love them a lot. But I must say, if you're based in Australia and you're building a brand, it might be worth looping in with them when you have a promotion running or something like that because they might be able to share it and it'll help get the word out there. So just wanted to put that on your radar if you aren't already in the loop with it.
- 7:41Okay, I feel like I have just been talking a million miles a minute, which obviously isn't great for my croaky voice. But now I have a few quick updates on the book front. You know, I love to keep you guys in the loop because this book is such a labor of love. It's specifically made for anyone tuning into these episodes like you. And I'm just so, so bloody excited. So let
- 8:08When people say everything costs three times as much and takes three times as long, they truly mean it. Everything just takes so damn long. And I'm over here trying to speed things up, which, you know, is hard to do when you rely on other people. Well, other businesses. It's been a real lesson for me in patience. But basically, I finally received my advanced copies, which are being sent out this week to all the women who are in the book, the 51 founders that I feature. Yeah.
- 8:37And I've been working on my launch plan, literally working on this launch plan day and night to try and get the word out there as much as possible during launch week, which starts on February 28th. And something popped into my mind. If you're someone who loves creating TikTok videos and you're already in the TikTok platform.
- 8:56scene and you want to be part of my hype girls, I would be thrilled to send you an advanced copy for you to turn it into some kind of cute TikTok video. If that's you, if you're a TikTok gal or guy, actually shoot me over an email with your TikTok account details to hello at femalestightupclub.com. And let's see if we can make something super fun together.
- 9:23Secondly, still on the book, the launch party is on February 24th. It's from 6.30 p.m. And if you're in London and you want to come along, celebrate with me and some of my hype girls, please do come. I so want to meet you. It's going to be small and cute. And I'm just so, so, so excited. We have the most amazing female DJ playing. Her name is Fabienne.
- 9:48We've got some super cute branded donuts from Donut Time. We've got quirky cocktails from our friends at Quarter Gin and Patty's Drinks. And obviously, lots of books. Just email me to get yourself on the list and let me know if you want to bring someone.
- 10:05Next up, merch update with our friends at The Dairy. Things are coming along nicely. I know everyone's been asking about merch for a while, and this is so much fun. I just love what we've been able to create for your desk. It's like a party on your desk. Everything's bright. Everything's super fun. Everything's colorful. It's about a week away, and then it'll be announced in our newsletter with links and all that good stuff. Make sure you're signed up to our newsletter if you aren't already, which is at femalestightupclub.com.
- 10:35And in other news, we are hiring for a part-time community manager for our private network, Hype Club, if you don't know what I'm talking about. Ideally, I'm looking for someone who loves what we're doing here, who loves the mission of Female Startup Club, and someone who has a flexible schedule.
- 10:56maybe a uni student is what I'm thinking. Basically, the main requirement is that you just need to sparkle really brightly. You need to have the good energy. You need to have the good vibes. If that sounds like you or you know someone that might be interested in being part of the FSC team, drop into my DMs or my inbox. I'd love to have a chat. I would love to meet you. I'm looking to hire someone starting ASAP really, really quickly.
- 11:21And I also, lastly, want to take a hot second to shout about Fiona from Hype Club. She's the founder of this really cool company called Pinky Pads. And why I want to shout about her is because she is proof that when it comes to TikTok, it's not a matter of if you pop, but a matter of when you pop.
- 11:38She's been doing the work. She's been putting in the time, spending hours to create content and learn the platform. But when she was posting on TikTok, she was getting nothing back. She was literally posting to crickets and getting something like 12 views. But she powered through. She didn't let that stop her. She knew that TikTok was a powerful tool for small businesses.
- 11:59And she just finally made a video that got 30,000 views overnight. And she is just beyond thrilled. And my point being is that sometimes it can feel like a wasted cause. But if you stick with it and continually try new things and iterate and keep trying, your video will start to reach its intended audience. And one day, you'll just blow up. TikTok is no joke. It's crazy, crazy stuff. And I'm just...
- 12:28want to say one last time, I know this episode's actually been a lot about TikTok, but if you're still listening in at this point, just get started today. Just start trying, just start telling your story, get on there, show up on the camera, tell people what you're doing, why it matters, why they should care. And I just promise you that over time you'll blow up. You might even blow up on the first video. I've seen that a lot as well.
- 12:52Okay, that's it for today. That's my updates. That's my resources. I hope you like this episode and please slide into my DMs if you want to chat about any of the above. And I hope to see you at the London launch party and see you next week. Bye.
