Transcript
- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05The JSC has closed its doors for another day, so it's time for the 5 o'clock
- 0:09shadow.
- 0:11And as always on a Wednesday, I speak to Skullclo, Portfolio Manager at PSG Wealth
- 0:15Old Oak in
- 0:17Cape Town.
- 0:19Now, I want to rant a bit, Skullclo, will you allow me to do so?
- 0:20You can say no, by the way.
- 0:23I'll get it.
- 0:24feeling that it's not gonna matter anyway no it would do if you said no i would just
- 0:31see the bit okay i'm
- 0:33here wake up everybody the lunatic has taken over the asylum we've known that for
- 0:37a while
- 0:38and everybody that says well he's gonna say this and the ceasefire will do this
- 0:45and the ceasefire will do that just like the ceasefire
- 0:47between israel and lebanon is a real thing no it's not there
- 0:49was a drone attack by israel by israel on lebanon today causing death.
- 0:55So it's not happening.
- 0:57There's no ceasefire.
- 0:58Trump doesn't have a strategy on what he wants to do.
- 1:02He doesn't have a coherent theme of what he's going to do.
- 1:08He doesn't have a goal.
- 1:10He didn't say, I need to go into Iran because I want this.
- 1:14And he's almost admitted that with his ramblings.
- 1:18Wake up, everybody.
- 1:19The oil price, more importantly, is $100 a barrel.
- 1:22It was $60 a barrel in October.
- 1:25That means that inflation is going up.
- 1:27That means that interest rates are going up.
- 1:29That means you've got less money in your pocket.
- 1:31That means that companies that are listed on exchanges are earning less.
- 1:36Therefore, their earnings are coming down.
- 1:38That means that the stock market falls.
- 1:40Just wake up, everybody.
- 1:42We've had a few weeks of, you know, think, oh, well, maybe this, maybe that.
- 1:46No, not maybe anything.
- 1:48We're in for the long term here.
- 1:50And as I said,
- 1:51the lunatic has taken over the asylum how's the market skunk you feeling
- 1:57better now no actually no i'm not one of those people i'm gonna continue and i'm
- 2:04gonna speak to this
- 2:06african listeners now because i
- 2:07mean what what what this boils down to is the whole globe is
- 2:14putting pressure on on trump the u.s and also israel to to Thank you.
- 2:21Well, Iran, to get around the table and get this peace deal done.
- 2:28Why?
- 2:29And as you mentioned, we're sitting with a $100 oil mark.
- 2:34And for the listeners out there, where are we now in the cycle?
- 2:38I mean, we had a massive, massive,
- 2:42massive jump in the petrol price and diesel prices last month.
- 2:48Now as we sit here, There's basically the central energy fund.
- 2:56They're actually on a daily basis.
- 2:57Beautiful.
- 2:58It's like if a daily, where the oil price currently is, if it stays unchanged,
- 3:04we should either see a raise or a drop in the petrol slash diesel prices.
- 3:11As we sit here, if the oil price stay at these current levels, remember, they came
- 3:18off a little bit.
- 3:20They're not the $110 levels anymore.
- 3:22They reached almost $120 around about five, six weeks ago, I think it was.
- 3:27And it was a spike.
- 3:28But the average is the most important thing, Skulk.
- 3:31And before you go on, the point is that people say, oh, it's just speculators.
- 3:36No, it's not speculators because the market has stayed where it is.
- 3:39It's currently $100 a barrel on the futures market for Brent crude oil.
- 3:45And people can't get oil anymore, so they're paying up.
- 3:49at whatever price for whatever oil they can get from whatever part of the world.
- 3:55So that filters through to the global oil market.
- 3:58It's $100 a barrel.
- 4:00And it doesn't matter whether you're in Alabama or Afghanistan.
- 4:04Oil is $100 a barrel.
- 4:06And that's what you pay if you have the luxury of having a car.
- 4:10That's it.
- 4:12But for those who don't have a car, they'll need to make use of a taxi.
- 4:16They'll need to make use of...
- 4:18Some sort of transportation.
- 4:22As we sit here, if the oil price stay unchanged, as of yesterday's close,
- 4:28the Central Energy Fund predicting that the petrol price,
- 4:32and here I'm using the 95 unleaded, petrol price should go up further.
- 4:392.25 rand.
- 4:41Diesel, wait for it.
- 4:436.60 rand.
- 4:46Get out.
- 4:46And remember, this is not...
- 4:48As Lindsay mentioned, this is not the world price trading at $110, $120 anymore.
- 4:53It's now come off.
- 4:53It's actually better levels.
- 4:55I mean, we're sitting with a president in the USA talking about a victory, an
- 5:02indefinite ceasefire.
- 5:04I still need to find out what's the difference between an indefinite ceasefire
- 5:08and actually the war being over.
- 5:10But anyway, an indefinite ceasefire, massive victory, blah,
- 5:14And we as South Africans, and we're not the only, I mean, I think I've seen the
- 5:20other day something like Malawi,
- 5:22they currently, we're sitting at about 20 odd rand per litre,
- 5:27they're already something like 50 or 55 rand per litre, per litre.
- 5:32And running out of it as well.
- 5:34And totally running out of it.
- 5:35So this is going to have a detrimental effect on the world economy, South Africa
- 5:42not excluded.
- 5:44We went into this year, and I know they've now recalculated and said, well, inflation
- 5:49that came out
- 5:513.1-ish, already north of the 3% mark that they're aiming for,
- 5:57they now say it should settle around the 3.7% mark.
- 6:02And already you can see, the Reserve Bank being a little bit more hawkish,
- 6:09not as positive as they went into this year.
- 6:12stating we should see a few interest rate cuts in 2026, very similar to the Fed.
- 6:18As we sit here,
- 6:20we're not expecting any interest rate cuts from the Fed for the rest of this year,
- 6:26if you look at the probabilities according to the CME Fed tool.
- 6:30If you look at locally already, Kahnia is saying, well,
- 6:33if we're going to have pressure on inflation upwards or further inflation
- 6:39pressures upwards,
- 6:41we're going to have no choice.
- 6:43We're going to have to hike interest rates.
- 6:44And as you mentioned, Lindsay, this is going to have a massive, massive effect on
- 6:48us.
- 6:49Because not only are we as South Africans paying more for our fuel,
- 6:55it will definitely have an effect on food prices because that will increase food
- 7:00prices.
- 7:02It will also mean that our debt repayment or debt servicing will also increase.
- 7:06That's a crazy, crazy negative environment.
- 7:09And then I'm looking at...
- 7:11the US market today and I'm seeing S&P 500 is up close to 1%
- 7:17Nasdaq up 1.25% I saw it today and I looked at it this morning throughout the
- 7:23day, even from midnight because I,
- 7:25whatever I saw the opening of the real markets at midnight, everything was going
- 7:29up,
- 7:29but all going up in tandem, gold was going up, oil was going up,
- 7:34the index futures were going up I didn't understand what was going on and as you
- 7:40speak speak,
- 7:42as we speak, the oil price has just fallen a dollar.
- 7:44It's now only up 2% on the day, but it's still up on the day.
- 7:47And as you say, the index futures in the United States, actually, the real market
- 7:54is up, and gold is up as well.
- 7:56What is going on?
- 7:58I think what it is, is there's so much money out there, Skulk, that people are
- 8:02just buying, and they're just buying anything they can.
- 8:04There's no rationale.
- 8:06It's like the Trump war policy, just buy the thing, for goodness sake.
- 8:09Do you understand it?
- 8:11I don't.
- 8:12I don't.
- 8:13And that makes this dangerous.
- 8:15That makes this dangerous.
- 8:16We were really, I mean, the other day we were talking about, oh, there we go.
- 8:20S&P 500 above 7,000 points.
- 8:24We talked about new all-time highs.
- 8:27I just can't believe we're sitting at new all-time highs while we're sitting with
- 8:32this volatile period.
- 8:34We're sitting with the oil price.
- 8:36Anyway, we can sort of debate this.
- 8:37We can.
- 8:38sort of frown upon us but i think the one thing that listeners out there should be
- 8:45very very careful because
- 8:47this i i'm unfortunately this this feels this feels like a bear trap all over it
- 8:52really feels like
- 8:54there's something there's something brewing out there and people are being too
- 8:58sanguine they're being too calm
- 9:00about it they're being yeah they're saying ah please we've seen this all before but
- 9:04this time we haven't seen it before
- 9:06because of all the reasons that i said in my rant at the beginning.
- 9:08There is something going on, Skalk.
- 9:10What will happen to gold if something does go on?
- 9:12Will the people that are long of gold, holding gold, say, OK,
- 9:15we've got to sell gold now in order to pay off our margin calls on other markets?
- 9:22That's a possibility.
- 9:25Well, they might use some treasury bills as well.
- 9:30Oh, that's my big sell of the year.
- 9:32The U.S.
- 9:33Treasury bill, the U.S.
- 9:33Treasury bond, everything.
- 9:35I mean, it's taking a while, but the US 10-year will be at 550, 650 by the end of
- 9:42the year, without a doubt.
- 9:44And the other thing that I have to comment upon after your analysis, Lesechuk and
- 9:49Yago...
- 9:50Jay Powell, Walsh, the new incoming Fed chairman, Christine Lagarde and
- 9:58Bailey at the Bank of England, they don't know.
- 10:01They don't know any better than we do.
- 10:03We are as good as they are skunk because we don't know as well.
- 10:07We don't know what's going to go on.
- 10:08So how can they say, well, we think inflation is going to peak at 3.8%
- 10:13in the UK after the UK inflation came out today at 3.3%.
- 10:17The South African came out at 3.1%.
- 10:20you Yes, that's all very willing.
- 10:21It all sounds nice.
- 10:23But in the future, it's not going to be there.
- 10:25It'll go up to 4% or 3.8%.
- 10:28And then after that, if the oil price is still 100 or 95, it'll go on from there.
- 10:34Nobody knows.
- 10:35And that's what's so scary as well.
- 10:38Remember, they look at the now.
- 10:40And we're talking about central banks slash reserve banks.
- 10:44They look at the now.
- 10:45They look at the data available to them now.
- 10:48And they make, I remember in COVID, it was very similar.
- 10:51Remember, these are central bankers.
- 10:54They're not doctors.
- 10:55So they can't predict what COVID is going to do over the next 12 months.
- 10:59So they look at what the commodity prices do back then, and they sort of extrapolate
- 11:06that on their models.
- 11:08And similar there, nobody, they're not war analysts or political analysts to sort of
- 11:14forecast where this
- 11:16war is going.
- 11:18So they look at the data now and say, well, this is where.
- 11:20Well, I'm saying that if we're going to see this war, where did I read that today?
- 11:24I was a political war analyst, but
- 11:28I think it boils down to do not take what Trump says every two, three days.
- 11:35But this war is over.
- 11:36It's done as this will be done in the next day or two.
- 11:43Expect months.
- 11:44Expect months.
- 11:45So, yeah.
- 11:46If we see months, I'm telling you now we're going to see a massive, massive
- 11:53pressure on inflation.
- 11:55I think and I still I like your bet.
- 11:56I like your call.
- 11:57I think I think a lot of these larger investors in the world will look at this
- 12:04as well and say, well,
- 12:06if it's going to be a pressure on inflation, there's going to be pressure on
- 12:08rates.
- 12:08Then I'd rather be selling selling my treasury bills and invest.
- 12:14even further in gold because that still remains one of the base hedges against a
- 12:21rising inflation tide.
- 12:24Anyway, let's not go to gold again.
- 12:27You know my view, and that's why I haven't sold mine yet.
- 12:30That's why I would definitely encourage all my clients.
- 12:33You've taken some profits, though.
- 12:35I did.
- 12:35I did.
- 12:37And I must admit, any weakness, any further weakness, I will look at
- 12:43accumulating some more.
- 12:45Bye, Beck.
- 12:47OK, let's have a look at the markets now with the RAND at $1, that is at 1647.
- 12:49British pound against the RAND 2224.
- 12:52The EUR RAND is 1930.
- 12:55On to commodities now.
- 12:57Well, the gold price, the aforementioned, is on my screen.
- 13:02Come on screen.
- 13:05Why does it do that?
- 13:07I hate it when things pop up in front of you.
- 13:09Scalp, the gold price is 4730.
- 13:13which is up just over half a percent now if we go down to the white metals we've
- 13:20got platinum up
- 13:22two percent or 44 to 2085 the palladium price is 1564
- 13:27up one and a half percent now onto the oil price which is very interesting i'm not
- 13:33hugely bullish of it
- 13:35gosh it's gone up another dollar when
- 13:36we were first speaking this is how mad it is it was 101 15 it went down to
- 13:42100.25.
- 13:44It's now $101.38 per barrel, up 3%.
- 13:49That's Brent crude.
- 13:50We've got West Texas at $92.33, up 3%.
- 13:56Copper price, $6.12 per pound,
- 14:01up 1.9%.
- 14:03And, yeah, what else have we got?
- 14:05The South African 10-year, not having a good day, up 11.5 basis points.
- 14:11or 1.3% to 8.55%.
- 14:16And the US 10-year, this is the one I like or don't like, 4.29%.
- 14:21That yield is going to 5, 550, 650, as I said earlier on.
- 14:26It is going to be trashed throughout this year.
- 14:30S&P 500 futures.
- 14:33I still can't believe I'm saying this, Skulk.
- 14:35It's up 0.84% to 715.
- 14:419.
- 14:420.50.
- 14:427,159.25.
- 14:47Do these people who trade the S&P, invest in the S&P, not watch television, not
- 14:54listen to us on our podcast every evening?
- 14:56Maybe that's why they're making so much more money than I am.
- 14:57Yeah.
- 14:58Because they're not listening to me.
- 15:01Great stuff.
- 15:02Great stuff.
- 15:03Okay.
- 15:04Bitcoin.
- 15:06Wow.
- 15:06Nearly 79,000 up over.
- 15:094%.
- 15:10What happened on the JSC today?
- 15:11I saw Quilter doing well.
- 15:13I saw AMSA doing horribly.
- 15:16So what we've seen today, it was a quiet day.
- 15:21It was a really, really quiet day today.
- 15:24We did see some information coming out from Capitec that looked good.
- 15:29I mean, they're just going from strength to strength.
- 15:31It's just crazy, crazy how this very much in line with Bloomberg consensus,
- 15:38but I mean, headline earnings per share growing 23 percent that is that's just
- 15:44crazy return
- 15:46on equity i mean a lot of people usually
- 15:46say well and i'm one of them was was always worried to get into capite because
- 15:53when you when you look at the that they priced a book um
- 15:58sometimes more than double more than double some of these other banks um the
- 16:05price the books and but when you look
- 16:07at the Return on equity.
- 16:09Return on equity.
- 16:1131%, Lindsay.
- 16:1331% and that's more than double most of these local banks'
- 16:15return on equities as well.
- 16:16So, yeah, it's really, really going from strength to strength.
- 16:22Every reporting, I think to myself, I mean, this bank just can't continue to
- 16:27grow,
- 16:28continue growing.
- 16:29That's been going for six or seven years, maybe even more when it was 7,800 rand a
- 16:35share.
- 16:35People saying, I can't keep on going like this.
- 16:37There's no customers in South Africa.
- 16:39The economy's messed up.
- 16:40So how on earth can they keep on going?
- 16:43And look at it now.
- 16:44Keep on going, Kapitek, I say, but there will be a point at one point where you
- 16:50start ignoring customers and
- 16:52customer service and you get too cocky about it all and something will happen and
- 16:56it will come down.
- 16:58But at the moment, just go with the flow.
- 17:00That's it.
- 17:00That's it.
- 17:01So, yeah, when we look at other news in the market, We had Remgrove.
- 17:09That's an interesting one.
- 17:10You know my view on Remgrove.
- 17:12You know it's one of my let's call it most loved stocks.
- 17:17They now mention that they now they actually had a complete full disposal of
- 17:24their
- 17:26first-round share.
- 17:28The whole lot.
- 17:30Yeah, the whole lot.
- 17:32First-round is gone.
- 17:34But this is crazy.
- 17:36Listen to this.
- 17:38When you look at the...
- 17:40year-end results and that was
- 17:4231st of december they had cash um cash on the cash cash within rem grow
- 17:47just over 12 billion rand okay they had a potential capital gains liability that's
- 17:54about five billion so that still means that's that's if it offsets we're talking
- 18:00about seven billion rand in cash
- 18:02the the first rand valuation on the books in in december was also
- 18:077 billion Rand.
- 18:08So let's take that 7 billion Rand, add that to the remaining 7 billion Rand,
- 18:12that's 14 billion Rand cash for RemGrow,
- 18:16and it's still trading at quite a chunky discount to NAV.
- 18:20So, I mean, you're asking me, we're talking about the uncertainty in the
- 18:26market, we're talking about,
- 18:28I can't believe the investors are piling into the market with this environment
- 18:34we're trading in.
- 18:36I think for investors that, that feel a bit of FOMO, this could be a company you
- 18:38can look at.
- 18:39Because I do think that at this very, very wide discount, this amount of cash on
- 18:45hand,
- 18:45and they haven't really made it clear what they're going to do with the cash.
- 18:48So usually a company,
- 18:51when they sell out of a sizable portion of the portfolio, in this case, first-rand,
- 18:58they always say, well, we have identified either to pay off some...
- 19:03some of our debt.
- 19:03Now, in this case, Remgrave don't have any debt.
- 19:06Or they'll say, well, we earmarked this for further acquisitions.
- 19:10Well, they haven't done that either.
- 19:11So that leaves two things.
- 19:13That leaves that either they might be buying back some shares that could have a
- 19:19massive effect on this
- 19:21large discount to its intrinsic value, or they might pay out sizable dividends,
- 19:27which will also be very, very positive.
- 19:29What would you like as a shareholder?
- 19:30Would you like the buyback?
- 19:32which is what the American banks are doing at the moment, $33 billion in the last
- 19:37quarter,
- 19:37so maybe a financial company like Remgrove might do the same, or would you prefer the
- 19:44special dividend?
- 19:46I would currently prefer the latter.
- 19:49And not that I don't believe in the abilities of Yanni and Co., well,
- 19:55the Remgrove team, not at all.
- 19:57But the one thing that, and you've had this conversation last year, also a few
- 20:03times this year as well,
- 20:05you can see the playbook.
- 20:07You can see what happened with Raynette, which is the, let's call it more offshore,
- 20:10I want to put it in inverted commas, Remgrove of, of um at
- 20:16Rupert. And they, on that side, they got rid of the Crown Jewels, namely British
- 20:23American Tobacco Company,
- 20:25and gave it back to the investors.
- 20:25What's left, Skunk?
- 20:26Tell me what's left, please.
- 20:29Inside Remgrove, it's still the largest investment in Remgrove is Mediclinic.
- 20:35I don't have percentage, but I think the last that I recall was about 31, 32% of
- 20:40the portfolio.
- 20:40Okay, a third of it is Mediclinic, yeah.
- 20:44Yeah.
- 20:45And then when you look at the other large investments, and this I do like,
- 20:50they've got a sizable investment.
- 20:53And when I say sizable, this is now starting to get very close to the
- 21:00investment size of Mediclinic, and that's outshurance.
- 21:02So that's also a very interesting one.
- 21:03So outshurance.
- 21:05It is very interesting.
- 21:06And the reason it's interesting to me is because I was watching Irish television
- 21:10the other night.
- 21:12I mean, you cannot believe it.
- 21:14I will search.
- 21:16European sites to get free football.
- 21:18And on Virgin Media Ireland, Virgin Media Dublin,
- 21:20there was a free football match I wanted to watch so I didn't have to pay a
- 21:24subscription.
- 21:26So I watched it.
- 21:28And in between, there were outshurance ads.
- 21:29And I thought, wait a second.
- 21:34This is an Irish television station.
- 21:36And they're...
- 21:37And it's a really good Irish ad as well.
- 21:40It was quite funny.
- 21:41It was quite engaging.
- 21:43And you wanted to say, well, I wouldn't mind having a look at that company.
- 21:47And it was Outurance, for goodness sake.
- 21:49A proudly South African company.
- 21:52It is.
- 21:53And it's a good story.
- 21:54We were talking about Capitec earlier as a great South African story.
- 21:59Great management, great prospects and forecast.
- 22:05And.
- 22:05And out-surance is no difference.
- 22:07I think it's a model that can be replicated beyond the borders of South
- 22:13Africa.
- 22:13But back to the point, I mean, it's the second largest position.
- 22:17Then the third largest one is the one that's actually exciting me, I would say
- 22:22the most,
- 22:24in the sense that they've got that deal with Vodacom where they start rolling out
- 22:28this dark fiber, the
- 22:30CIVH. And I think that could be a very, very interesting...
- 22:33interesting company for the future.
- 22:36And then I would say the fourth largest one is Discovery.
- 22:39And we all know Discovery's story as well, also good.
- 22:43So even if they just go and pay out a large special dividend,
- 22:50I would be more than happy,
- 22:52more than happy to sit with the remaining companies in Rimgrave because it's great
- 22:59companies.
- 23:00And do not be surprised if we've seen...
- 23:03The likes of rainbow chickens, for instance,
- 23:06where rainbow chickens were listed and then eventually delisted and eventually
- 23:12listed again.
- 23:14And we know that circle.
- 23:15Don't be surprised if many clinics get to a certain point again where they get
- 23:22listed again as well and stripped out of
- 23:24Remgrove. Is there a chance, Skunk, that you look at this company, Remgrove, and
- 23:28you look at them as they're selling first-round?
- 23:30First of all, why are they selling first-round?
- 23:31Why did they sell first-round?
- 23:33What did they sell?
- 23:33They sold advice that Remco had disposed of
- 23:3951,996,739 shares and then off-market
- 23:463,300,000. Anyway, the point is they sold a lot of shares.
- 23:50Why did they do that?
- 23:51Did they not like first-round?
- 23:54Did they not like First Rand?
- 23:55No, they had a small holding in First Rand, but their main holding was in RMB.
- 23:59And remember RMB, I think it was something like 96% of RMB was First Rand.
- 24:06And then RMB actually unbundled First Rand out of the company.
- 24:12And suddenly Remgrave was sitting with a massive chunk of First Rand.
- 24:16And I think it wasn't a core holding for them.
- 24:19And I've mentioned it a few times already.
- 24:22First Rand was never really a core, core holding.
- 24:25So I think it's just time they but again,
- 24:29your bigger question is more what's been the playbook for these stuff,
- 24:34for Raynet as well as Remgra over the past 24 months?
- 24:37Are they getting to the point where they're saying, no, we're bored with this
- 24:40now.
- 24:40This is an old investment model.
- 24:42So we have to get out of these things slowly and gently so that people like
- 24:49Skullclo don't freak out.
- 24:51and if eventually we're going to dispose of all these things, in which case you've
- 24:55got to buy them immediately.
- 24:57Yep, it could be.
- 24:59Because at a 40% discount, sign me up for those.
- 25:00Precisely, yeah.
- 25:03Okay, it's an interesting one.
- 25:06That could be the one.
- 25:06If you're a hedge fund manager or something and you're looking at this,
- 25:12goodness me, it could be the play for you.
- 25:14Skunk, let's have a look at what went up and down on the JSC today.
- 25:18And I'll tell you that I've got Sassel up 5.2%, 216.
- 25:25Rand and 64 cents per share.
- 25:27Quilter up 5.1%, Aspen up 3.9%, Tungela up 3%,
- 25:33and Glencore up 2.1%.
- 25:35Do you want to comment on any of those, please?
- 25:38No, we had Billiton that actually brought a trading statement.
- 25:42And from a copper play point of view, they did really well.
- 25:49So I think that could have had an effect on the likes of Glencore as well.
- 25:53Might have not.
- 25:54might have had but yeah it was it was a good day i think uh billetson was also up
- 26:01something like two percent so that might have just
- 26:03just not make your make your top five there so that might have been just a bit
- 26:08of a copper play today on the downside absa down
- 26:103.8 percent uh harmony a 3.1 percent loser richmond down 2.85 percent
- 26:14uh what is it 2.1 percent down for mr price and another retailer, TrueWorths,
- 26:20down just over Two percent.
- 26:23Retail is not doing well, I suppose, because of the threat of rising interest
- 26:28rates,
- 26:28which is absolutely a threat.
- 26:31And the South African consumer, if this thing goes on in the Middle East,
- 26:36will be affected probably more than most.
- 26:40So just on that note, Absa is an ex-stuff and also Harmony is also an ex-stuff
- 26:46story.
- 26:47But yeah, you're right.
- 26:49I think you're definitely right.
- 26:50It's definitely going to be a...
- 26:51Interesting story.
- 26:53Okay.
- 26:54Skulk, thanks so much for your time.
- 26:55Skulk Lowe is a portfolio manager at PSG Wealth Old Oak in Cape Town, and that was
