- 0:00In the West, the existence of the soul has been mainly
- 0:04perceived either as a matter of religious belief or scientific
- 0:10skepticism, neither necessarily based in actual experience.
- 0:16At one point, scientists decided that if the belief that the soul
- 0:20departs at the time of death is to be considered as factual,
- 0:25then they should be able to weigh the body at the moment
- 0:28before death and the moment after death, and thereby know
- 0:33the weight of the soul that has now departed.
- 0:37This is the ultimate attempt by the external physical mind to
- 0:41try to grapple with the reality of a more subtle aspect of
- 0:45existence. Of course, when they could not
- 0:49ascertain the weight in this manner, they felt justified in
- 0:53denying the existence of the soul.
- 0:56The idea that we are a soul that occupies and uses the body, life
- 1:01and mind for its cumulative experience, rather than being a
- 1:06body that happens to have or acquire a soul, never dawns on
- 1:11them. The fact that they could not,
- 1:14with the limitations of their instruments, measure the weight
- 1:17of thought or measure the weight of a photon did not deter them
- 1:23from coming up with any excuse to justify their lack of
- 1:27personal experience or at least a recognition of the soul and
- 1:33its action in their own lives. From the side of Western
- 1:38religion, followers are simply asked to believe in the
- 1:42existence of the soul despite having no personal experience of
- 1:46it that they can recognize. The reliance on dogmatic demands
- 1:52rather than developing a path for personal experience has
- 1:56caused many people to leave the mainstream religious
- 1:59organizations over the last 50 to 75 years and embraced the
- 2:05quest for spiritual experience through a variety of ways.
- 2:12The failure both the secular and religious approaches in Western
- 2:16society have also led many people to simply try to deny the
- 2:20deeper truth that underlies all existence and leads to lives
- 2:25that are restricted within the walls of a materialistic,
- 2:29hedonistic or intellectual framework without any deeper
- 2:34significance or meaning. Many who follow these directions
- 2:39wind up depressed, disillusioned, or with a feeling
- 2:43of meaninglessness or emptiness about their lives.
- 2:49There are a number of aspects of our existence that do not appear
- 2:52to exist until they come forward and take a visibly active role
- 2:56in our lives. The higher reasoning intellect,
- 2:59for instance, does not generally become highly active for years
- 3:04after a person is born. For some people, it is difficult
- 3:08to discern its action throughout most of their lives.
- 3:12Yet we can observe humanity and see that there is indeed a power
- 3:18of mental activity that exists but cannot be weighed, seen,
- 3:23dissected, or otherwise discerned other than by its
- 3:27actual activity and the patterns it develops in the life of the
- 3:31individual who has experienced the activation of that power.
- 3:37In a somewhat similar way, the action of the soul is not
- 3:41immediately apparent in most people, but when the experience
- 3:45comes, those who have that experience cannot deny its
- 3:49existence, nor can they deny the influence it has in their lives.
- 3:55Sometimes the experience comes in a very traumatic manner, such
- 4:00as the conversion of Saul on the road to Damascus, or through
- 4:04some kind of near death or other traumatic event in the life,
- 4:08such as that recounted by Danny and Brinkley in his book Saved
- 4:13by the Light. At other times it takes the form
- 4:17of a gradual and natural process of maturation, development and
- 4:22change as the life experience accumulates.
- 4:26In rare individuals, the light of the soul can be seen
- 4:30virtually from the time of taking physical birth, the
- 4:33result of the maturity of the soul carried forward from prior
- 4:38incarnations. For discussion about the
- 4:41necessity and action of rebirth, see earlier blog posts on the
- 4:46subject. In our review of the Life Divine
- 4:49and Rebirth and Karma. Some traditions formulate the
- 4:54soul with varying names or definitions, including in a way
- 4:59that is the least personified, the concepts of dependent
- 5:03origination and cause and effect, which embraces a stream
- 5:08of consciousness which continues, changes, evolves,
- 5:12grows, matures beyond any individual life and death
- 5:17experience. One of the powers of the soul is
- 5:21to bring harmony to the disparate elements of the nature
- 5:24by an innate sense of balance and right placement for each
- 5:28part of the being. We may use the analogy of the
- 5:32Symphony Orchestra with numerous diverse instruments that make
- 5:36widely different sounds. Without a conductor, the sound
- 5:40can be discordant. When the conductor takes charge
- 5:44of the orchestra, the music can be beautiful, harmonious, and
- 5:49sublime, Sri Robindo observes. Quote.
- 5:55The true central being is the soul, but this being stands
- 5:59back, and in most human natures is only the secret witness.
- 6:03Or one might say, a constitutional ruler who allows
- 6:08his ministers to rule for him, delegates to them his empire,
- 6:13silently assents to their decisions, and only now and then
- 6:17puts in a word which they can at any moment override and act
- 6:21otherwise. But this is so long as the soul
- 6:24personality put forward by the psychic entity is not yet
- 6:28sufficiently developed. When this is strong enough for
- 6:33the inner entity to impose itself through it, then the soul
- 6:37can come forward and control the nature.
- 6:41It is by the coming forward of this true monarch and his taking
- 6:44up of the reigns of government that there can take place a real
- 6:49harmonization of our being and our life.
