Transcript
- 0:16Hello to all the comic geeks, marvel fans and all the nerds in
- 0:19between. Welcome to another episode of
- 0:21Vigilante Vibes podcast where we talk all things Marvel along
- 0:24with other fandoms but without the toxicity that's taken U way
- 0:27too much time in each and every fandom.
- 0:29I'm your host Megan Nicole and today I have a very special
- 0:31guest with me. She is the creator by the crook
- 0:33Cut the Movie podcast and has joined us to talk all about
- 0:37herself and her podcast. Please welcome Reese Crook.
- 0:43Hi everyone. Oh sorry I didn't know.
- 0:46I was like, do I just jump in and say hello?
- 0:49I realize I don't give much opportunity there to figure that
- 0:52out. I just realized that.
- 0:55I I think I nailed the hello and now I'm making it awkward.
- 0:58Well, now you're, you're good. The the biggest awkward thing is
- 1:02when I mispronounce someone's name and they're like, hi, it's
- 1:07actually this. I'm like, I'm so sorry.
- 1:12Well, you got the pronunciation right and or the pod name right
- 1:15and everything, so you're also nailing it.
- 1:18Look at us, we are just killing it today.
- 1:21So your podcast, The Crook Cut it is brand new.
- 1:25It is a movie podcast. Why don't you tell us about it?
- 1:28Yeah, so I love movies, obviously, and I really wanted
- 1:33to jump in online and create something.
- 1:37I don't feel I'm personally at a point yet where I was like
- 1:40comfortable enough to do like a lot of video content on my own.
- 1:44So I was like, why not just do the pod, mainly audio, and then
- 1:48we'll see how we go from there. So I just took a leap of faith.
- 1:51I had my mic and all the equipment bought months and
- 1:55months and months ago, and I was just sitting on it.
- 1:57And then I joined the Threads app and the community on there.
- 2:02So like it's the safest place on the Internet that I've
- 2:05discovered. And then I grew like have a
- 2:08little bit of a following and then they will like just go for
- 2:11it. And I was like, you know what,
- 2:12I'm just going to go for it and see what happens.
- 2:14So it's been really good so far. I've listened to some of it and
- 2:18I really dig it. I think you have a great thing
- 2:20going, and you're 100% correct. The Threads Podcast Network,
- 2:26I've said it so many times, that is the best place to go if
- 2:30you're starting off, if you're a veteran podcaster.
- 2:34These people just want you to succeed and they want to be your
- 2:36friend and they want to collaborate, and you don't find
- 2:38that ever. And it's so nice.
- 2:42Yeah. And I really enjoy the fact that
- 2:44Threads is mostly so faceless, like I feel and other platforms
- 2:49you get comments about like what you look like and like the
- 2:53equipment you have and like even like my background right now.
- 2:56And like I really enjoy that they're all judging me on my
- 2:58content and the words I put out and not like me and stuff like
- 3:02that. So I think that was definitely
- 3:04the hold up. But I don't know, I get so many
- 3:07lovely DMS and like messages from people all the time.
- 3:10Like it's such a safe space. It is.
- 3:13And you're right, like YouTube is a terrifying place, but I
- 3:18mean, every place on the internet's going to have those
- 3:21people. You just at some point you're
- 3:23just like, I want to do what I want to do.
- 3:27I used to be the same way. I was terrified.
- 3:29I was like, don't put my face anywhere, Don't put my name
- 3:32anywhere. I want nothing to do with
- 3:33anyone. But then after a while, you grow
- 3:36very confident in your content and your audience and your
- 3:40listeners really do help. They bring you so much.
- 3:42I don't want to say confidence again, but they give you so much
- 3:46reassurance that you're on the right path and I really think
- 3:48you are. Thank you.
- 3:51Yeah, I, I tried to like, I feel like a lot of people out there
- 3:55doing movie content. So I was like, how can I kind of
- 3:58put my own spin on it while being like, and I I'm never
- 4:01going to sit here and be like, oh, doing what everyone else is
- 4:03doing is boring. I might go for it, put do it
- 4:05like, you know what I mean? But that's why I've tried with
- 4:09mine to be less about, like reviewing and like doing what
- 4:12other people are doing. I keep my format very short and
- 4:16I try and do like multiple movies at once, maybe with like
- 4:19a connecting thread of some sort.
- 4:21I think the one of my episodes I dropped was like my favorite
- 4:23scores. So that's like a little bit
- 4:25random, a little bit different. So yeah, I'm really enjoying it.
- 4:28I tried to do a movie review and then it just felt like I was
- 4:32like, you have to like this, 'cause I like it.
- 4:35And I got like, I was like, I can't put that out.
- 4:37I can't tell people that, 'cause you know, you get so passionate
- 4:41about things you care about. And I listened to it back and I
- 4:44was like, oh, I'm accidentally kind of like bullying everyone
- 4:47into liking this. So I better, better woo back a
- 4:50bit. But yeah, so I've been enjoying
- 4:52doing the stuff I've been doing. I've tried to plan as much as I
- 4:56can because it goes the time goes so fast when you're trying
- 4:59to work on a project as well as well as like your own in real
- 5:02life stuff going on. Yes, I 100% get that.
- 5:08I spent so much time this week just editing and I was like, I
- 5:11don't even know what I talked about.
- 5:13Like you just you work on it for so long.
- 5:15You're like, I don't even know what episode this is.
- 5:17It doesn't even matter. It's a lot.
- 5:19But I do like how you bring something very new to the movie
- 5:23podcast because like you said, a movie podcast is a dime a dozen.
- 5:26And you know, everyone has their own little kind of spin on it.
- 5:29They all make it their own, which I love.
- 5:31And it's you can't go wrong with a movie podcast because a movie
- 5:34podcast is usually all about someone's thoughts on a movie.
- 5:40That's very much what they think of it.
- 5:42So you'll never find the same one yours.
- 5:45I like because it does give you something more, like you said,
- 5:47more than reviews. It gives you like the score it
- 5:50you do multiple movies and I think that's really cool.
- 5:53Like that's something very out-of-the-box and you're
- 5:56offering so many different things to so many different
- 6:00types of movie nerds. Like I have a friend who's all
- 6:03about scoring. He would die for that.
- 6:07And you, you nailed that. Thank you.
- 6:10Yeah, I, I really tried to brainstorm and I was like, how
- 6:14can I be like a little bit different?
- 6:16And I've like definitely tease it.
- 6:18I'll like do reviews in the in the future maybe.
- 6:20But I at the moment, I'm just really happy with the format I
- 6:24have going. And then like a little bit about
- 6:27how I got into movies. I actually had my wisdom teeth
- 6:30taken out and I was stuck in a chair.
- 6:32So I was like, how am I going to make the time pass?
- 6:35And I put on screen and I watched 1-2 and three in one day
- 6:39and I was like, like, this is going to be my new favorite
- 6:42thing. Movies are my new favorite
- 6:44thing. So I've also been doing this
- 6:47like series where because in my, in my opinion, like the there's
- 6:54so many movies and like I look at myself when I first started
- 6:57and I was like, imagine I watched Interstellar.
- 6:59I would have been like, no, I'm not like this is too.
- 7:02This is too tricky for me. So I've actually got a like
- 7:06series running in the pod as well where I like I has it to
- 7:10say entry level, but I'm trying to like encourage people who are
- 7:13getting into films, some movies they could watch in each genre
- 7:16that are going to touch on different aspects of the genre
- 7:19and that they can enjoy before they go into like Interstellar
- 7:23and like, you know, deep diving into these more like phenomenal,
- 7:26like maybe a little bit more critical thinking films.
- 7:29Because I really am scared that like people are going to go in,
- 7:31try and watch these good movies and be like, like, this is not
- 7:35for me. So I've been doing that series
- 7:38as well, which I quite enjoy. I actually have received a
- 7:41little bit of like unsureness from other people.
- 7:44They've been a bit critical of it, but I don't know, I feel
- 7:48like I just want people to come to my page or like be feel that
- 7:52they can like contact me and like ask questions and stuff
- 7:54like that. And I just want to help everyone
- 7:56enjoy movies and everything like that.
- 7:59I like that. So you're kind of like the
- 8:01gateway into these because there are a lot of genres.
- 8:03I don't know a thing about that I would really like to know.
- 8:07Like horror genre. I get nightmares like crazy.
- 8:11So I don't know anything about it, but I'd like to.
- 8:14So I think that's a really cool thing you do.
- 8:17Yeah, I just want everyone to be able to come to like any sort of
- 8:21genre, any movie, and just be like, I can enjoy this.
- 8:24And I think like, the invention of like letterbox is great, but
- 8:27like, everyone can be so critical.
- 8:30And I obviously have movies I don't like and don't enjoy, but
- 8:34I always try and find, well, I can see why people enjoy this or
- 8:37I can see, like the silver lining here.
- 8:40And yeah, I just really want to encourage everyone to take out
- 8:43of movies and cinema what they take out of it.
- 8:46And that if you like something a different capacity to someone
- 8:48else, that doesn't mean you don't like it, you know?
- 8:52Yeah, I just want it to be like a safe space for everyone.
- 8:55I love that we need more safe spaces.
- 8:57Everyone I have on my podcast is a safe space and like it just
- 9:02does my heart so good to see new safe spaces because it's scary
- 9:07out there. The Internet is scary, People
- 9:08are scary, The world is scary. We need somewhere where we could
- 9:11just turn off our brain. We know we won't hear something
- 9:14that kind of triggers us. We know this person won't add
- 9:17toxicity to our life. We just need a safe voice to
- 9:22talk us through the things we really like.
- 9:25Yeah, and I know like I started my MCU journey six months ago
- 9:29and it is very hard to ask questions on the Internet about
- 9:36it. As you would know, I'm very
- 9:38fortunate that I I started a new job and met like one of my Co
- 9:41workers was like getting into the MCU and I'll like no, he
- 9:45encouraged me to get into the MCU.
- 9:47So I go to him with all my questions because even when I
- 9:49sound so ridiculous, he's like no race.
- 9:53He's very kind and stuff. The Internet is less forgiving
- 9:56when it comes to the MCU. I they're so mean.
- 10:03They are. I misquoted something from
- 10:06Winter Soldier. I thought in one of the scenes
- 10:09Natasha was saying, do you want to play a game from Saw?
- 10:12The movie Saw And I was trying to find the scene.
- 10:15And I was like, guys, like I'm trying to find this scene.
- 10:17And then the first comment I got was, oh, it's actually from War
- 10:20Games. And I was like, oh, silly me, no
- 10:22problem. And then I got about 80 comments
- 10:24just being like, you're so stupid.
- 10:27Like I can't believe you thought that.
- 10:28And I was like, guys, I don't think it was that serious.
- 10:31Like I'm so sorry. It's so excessive, like you
- 10:35didn't hurt anyone. I know, I know.
- 10:38And I got DMS being like, take this down, you're spreading
- 10:41misinformation. And I was like, oh, like I don't
- 10:43think it's a problem making a mistake and like acknowledging
- 10:46the mistake or whatnot. So.
- 10:49This is real. The movie is not real.
- 10:53Natasha isn't real. My God.
- 10:55Yeah, it was definitely. That was the that was the day I
- 10:58was like, oh, like the Internet can be very unforgiving on it
- 11:01it. Absolutely.
- 11:03Can I remember an end game Natasha in the Marvel Comics?
- 11:10I don't know if you have much. I know nothing about the comics.
- 11:13That's perfectly fine. So in the comics.
- 11:16Anything and I'll be like, yeah, yeah, cool.
- 11:18So in the comics she's like a a ballerina.
- 11:21She's very heavy into ballet. And in Avengers End Game and on
- 11:27the side you see some ballet slippers, which was a reference
- 11:30to her being a ballerina. And I went online and I was
- 11:33like, Oh my gosh, look at this Easter egg I just found.
- 11:35And everyone, it was like 200 comments that were like, how did
- 11:40you not see that? Are are you stupid?
- 11:42Are you blind? Did you even open your eyes when
- 11:45you watched a movie? And I was like, Oh my God, Oh my
- 11:49God, did I offend you? That's weird.
- 11:54But then you like, some of them are so mean that if you just
- 11:57like go out, I'm super nice. They're like, oh, oh shit, I
- 12:01don't know. So a few of them I said, Oh my
- 12:03gosh, that's so great that you saw that, that that's awesome.
- 12:06And they're like, oh. Yeah.
- 12:10So it's like. Kill them with kindness, hey?
- 12:13Yeah, but you're not doing it with good intentions, you're
- 12:15just doing it to make them feel weird.
- 12:17So it's like, is it coming with kindness or are you just being
- 12:19petty? Who knows?
- 12:20Yeah, but it worked out. I I find that when I match them
- 12:24with kindness as well, they usually delete their comments.
- 12:26So I'm like, oh, you're just, you're just upset and that you
- 12:29just realize that I'm a human on the other end.
- 12:31So you've like chilled out a bit.
- 12:34But my point to all of that was just like, yeah, I hope people
- 12:37find my page and can listen to my podcast and feel like I'm not
- 12:40telling them they have to. And I always say at the end of
- 12:43my pod, like, if you disagree or you took something different
- 12:46from this movie, feel free to let me know.
- 12:48Like, I'm so open to discussion. And I think people forget that
- 12:52we all view media and pop culture through the lens in
- 12:55which we live in. Like, I can't look at something
- 12:58from like, you're in America and I'm in Australia.
- 13:00I'm not going to look at something with an American
- 13:02identity. I'm looking at something through
- 13:04an Australian identity. So I think sometimes people
- 13:07forget that we're all going to take different things out
- 13:08because we're all in different facets of life and experience
- 13:11life differently. So I just heard people feel like
- 13:14that when they find me. I will say you're very, very
- 13:17warm, like you're very comforting to talk to and even
- 13:21listening to you on your podcast, I was just like, it's
- 13:24like drinking a hot cup of tea. Like it's just nice.
- 13:27It's there's no drama. It's just very, very sweet and I
- 13:31really like that. Oh, thank you so much.
- 13:33I'm glad that you feel that way. I'm that's definitely what I try
- 13:37and put out it. I almost sometimes feel like I'm
- 13:39like, OK, I think they get it. I think I get that you're OK,
- 13:42like with different opinions, but I just want to remind
- 13:45everyone like, I don't know, we're all different.
- 13:47I'm OK with that. Like, I don't mind.
- 13:50Yeah, but you also to think like that episode, you're telling
- 13:53them that that could be the first episode they listen to
- 13:55you. So like I said, like I say, in
- 13:58all of every single one of mine, there's no racism, there's no
- 14:00sexism, there's no homophobia, none of that toxicity.
- 14:03You won't find any in any of my channels.
- 14:06And I feel like you do have to reiterate that point because
- 14:09it's like, this is my vibe, this is my channel, this is what
- 14:12you're not going to get and this is what you are going to get.
- 14:15Yeah, no, that's awesome. Yeah, it's good.
- 14:18It's good that people can find stuff like that.
- 14:20And there's definitely room for more like, I don't know the
- 14:24correct word, more like crude or more like crass, like content.
- 14:28There's definitely room for that.
- 14:29And some people enjoy that. It's just, like, not something I
- 14:32want to facilitate or foster. Yeah.
- 14:35I want to remain true to who I am and stuff like that.
- 14:37And yeah, I just want to be open and, you know, warm, as you say.
- 14:41So I appreciate you. Saying that, it's no problem.
- 14:44So you're basically a movie expert.
- 14:47What has been your favorite movie to dive into?
- 14:53Oh. Like on the pod so far.
- 14:55Yeah, Yeah, we'll do that. Hi, I'm coming across a bit
- 15:00biased, it's actually Sebastian Stan.
- 15:02Big fan over here. Stop.
- 15:05I haven't stopped thinking about him in like 4 years.
- 15:09Literally, I'll I just got my phone down here.
- 15:11I'll show you my spy background if you can see.
- 15:16I can. It's The Winter Soldier, but my
- 15:22favorite movie probably for the year that I watched so far is
- 15:25called A Different Man and it got Sebastian's Stan and it just
- 15:31explores like the themes of like identity crisis and impostor
- 15:34syndrome. And I just like I experience a
- 15:38bit of like impostor syndrome and inferiority complex
- 15:41sometimes and it kind of interchangeably explores all
- 15:45those themes. And it was like the first time
- 15:46I've like watched a movie where I was like, Oh my God, like, I
- 15:49get that. And it was more than like, oh, I
- 15:52don't feel like myself in my body because of my appearance,
- 15:56but it's like, I inherently like in my soul, don't feel like
- 16:00myself. And I felt like, wow.
- 16:03And just the way they like displayed it on screen and like
- 16:06the the metaphors and everything in it, like it's so beautiful
- 16:09that movie. I honestly will praise it till
- 16:12the end of time. Like, I love it so.
- 16:15And I think they do it in such a unique way in that our main
- 16:18character has, and I don't know his proper condition, but he has
- 16:22like dysmorphia, like in his face and stuff like that.
- 16:26Just just this genetic disease that he has.
- 16:30And yeah, I just think it's so clever.
- 16:32I don't know if you've seen that one or seen much about that.
- 16:34One I have, I wanna see you said it's a better man.
- 16:38Yeah, I think it might have been sorry.
- 16:40There was another movie released this year with like an identical
- 16:44name and I get them confused. Oh, that's OK, I do too.
- 16:51Anything that's not Marvel has tend to confuse at all.
- 16:54I know, but you said, oh, I'm a film expert now I sound so
- 16:57silly, don't I? You're still a film expert.
- 17:02Thank you. Thank you.
- 17:05It's a different man. A different man.
- 17:07OK, I'm putting that in my notes right now.
- 17:12A Better Man was like about one of our singers here, I think.
- 17:15And he was actually, he was played like he was a monkey,
- 17:18like he was a monkey in a human world.
- 17:19I don't, I haven't really seen much about that one.
- 17:23But yeah, it was called The Better Man and then we got a
- 17:25different man and then there was like another one coming out.
- 17:28That's something, man. And I got them all confused
- 17:31there. There's just too many men.
- 17:33Yes, too many. Where's the women?
- 17:35Well, just let's say a different.
- 17:37Let's not even put their to it. Yeah, they're all so complex.
- 17:41These men need to calm down. Yeah, but that one for sure.
- 17:46And Nora, I don't know if you've seen Nora, they won quite a few
- 17:50awards that the Golden Globes, I think.
- 17:52Oh, I don't know. I'm getting the more confused.
- 17:54Now I never get don't worry about the word shows.
- 17:55None of us know. Don't worry.
- 17:57There's so many and they happened like kind of together
- 18:00and I just, yeah, I get them a bit all like blended in with
- 18:02each other. Yeah, yeah, I get it.
- 18:05Nora. I haven't seen.
- 18:07I'm not, I'm not very adventurous when it comes to
- 18:10starting new movies. I'm a comfort movie, girly all
- 18:13day. Like I rewatch everything I
- 18:16watch now. I have rewatched before and
- 18:19like, I'm fine with that. I'll try a new movie like
- 18:22Marvel, I'll try anything, but I think that's just who I am as a
- 18:25person. But Enora, I heard a lot of good
- 18:28things about it, but I never was like, I got to watch it right
- 18:31now, what is it? What's What's it about?
- 18:35Well, it's funny you say, because a lot of the marketing
- 18:38didn't really reach Australia. So I was in the cinema with my
- 18:41mom and I was like, do you want to go?
- 18:43We can either watch Nosferatu or Enora.
- 18:46And she was like, oh, I'm not really into like Nosferatu.
- 18:49And I was like, fine, we're watching Nora.
- 18:50I was like, I don't know what it's about.
- 18:52Like, I don't know what we're walking into.
- 18:54And yeah, we walk into this movie that starts off with our
- 18:58main character fully nude, like she's working in a strip club or
- 19:02something. And I was like, I'm really not
- 19:05sure what we're watching, mum. Like I was like, I'm so sorry.
- 19:07I'm really not sure what we're watching.
- 19:11And on paper it sounds a bit silly.
- 19:13It's like, oh, you know, like a sex worker gets married and then
- 19:16the parents of the son want to get it annulled.
- 19:19Is that the word annulled? Yeah.
- 19:22Yeah, yeah. And I was like, oh, I don't like
- 19:25it sounds a bit trivial, Like, it sounds so silly, but it's
- 19:28just this, like, exploration of, again, like this identity, like
- 19:31her whole identity is tied to the fact that she's a sex
- 19:34worker. And then by the end, you
- 19:36realize, like, she's a human being.
- 19:37Like, you know, she's still a human being.
- 19:39And like, I can't really say too much without like spoiling too
- 19:43much. But essentially like she gets,
- 19:45she marries one of her clients in this like whirlwind romance.
- 19:48And then the parents are like, no, no, like we're not doing
- 19:51this. And then it's just like the
- 19:52story of how they like kind of unfold the marriage and stuff.
- 19:57And yeah, it's it's actually very beautiful piece of media.
- 20:00And I remember when the last scene plays and you could have
- 20:04heard a pin drop in the cinema. It was dead silence.
- 20:08And then? I'm not sure how your cinemas do
- 20:11it if they're a little bit different, but as the credits
- 20:13start rolling and they roll for maybe like 10 seconds and then
- 20:16the lights will slowly like come on and then you can leave.
- 20:19Well, the credits were rolling, the lights went on and everyone
- 20:23was just like frozen like it. No one was moving, no one said a
- 20:26word. And then we all just silently
- 20:28exited out. And I was like, it's like taking
- 20:31your breath away, but in like the best way possible.
- 20:34Almost like when you like start choking up, like you're about to
- 20:37cry. That's what I felt like I was
- 20:38like, like it was just so it's such a beautiful movie and I can
- 20:44definitely see why some people get lost a little bit in like
- 20:47the sex work aspect of it because the first like 30-40
- 20:50minutes are heavily about that. So like my advice to you would
- 20:55be as like sticking it out. I reckon like just just get past
- 20:59that if you're not like, you know, it's all the most
- 21:01entertaining things ever on screen.
- 21:03But I don't know, I think, I don't know.
- 21:07I feel like we can all find ourselves in the theme of like
- 21:10lack of identity or loss of identity or just struggling to
- 21:13know who we are because we're all just trying to find that
- 21:15place in the world. And movies like Enora and A
- 21:19Different Man, like, to me really highlight that, but in
- 21:22like, the most real, like, human way.
- 21:26I know obviously some movies, like, are so unrealistic.
- 21:29You're just like, yeah, OK, like that's the theme.
- 21:31But like, that could never happen.
- 21:32But these ones just feel so like, real and authentic and
- 21:36like, you're just looking at someone's life.
- 21:38I don't know. I find them so just like special
- 21:40and stuff like that. They're almost haunting in a way
- 21:44because it's like that could happen.
- 21:45And I mean, it might not happen just like that, but the way they
- 21:48portray it is such a beautiful thing.
- 21:50And I've seen some movies that kind of leave you stunned, like,
- 21:54oh, I didn't think, I didn't think we were going to do this.
- 21:58But you and your mom are so ballsy.
- 22:00You just walk into a movie. You know nothing about it.
- 22:03I know I I'm not a trailer watcher.
- 22:05I feel like trailers nowadays ruin movies.
- 22:08I, I don't know, I feel like I've seen half the movie.
- 22:13The only trailers I watch is when I'm in this the theatre and
- 22:15I'm like, you know, they run some of the trailers beforehand.
- 22:18Other than that, I don't watch. I try not to like, spoil
- 22:21anything and I try and block out all the noise from people online
- 22:25because I get really nervous. I don't know, you would have
- 22:27seen like all the Sinners reviews coming out and
- 22:30everyone's like so excited about it.
- 22:33And I text my friend and I was like, I'm really scared if I
- 22:36don't like this. Like I don't know what to do if
- 22:38I don't like it because so many people are like, this is like
- 22:41cinemas back, cinemas back. But yeah, I never, like, I never
- 22:46try and review anything before I watch it.
- 22:50And unfortunately I'm sitting next to my mom as we're opening
- 22:53up in the middle of a strip club about a sex worker.
- 22:55And I'm like, sorry mom, sorry mom.
- 22:58I mean mom doesn't mind and like it's fine but I was like sorry.
- 23:02But it's still like, it's your mom, you know?
- 23:04Like my mom won't get it either. But I'd still be like, I'm so
- 23:07sorry I did this to you. You don't deserve.
- 23:09This and I like put my hair in front of my eyes and I was like,
- 23:12I'm not going to look over. So so most of the movies you see
- 23:18you go into just completely blind.
- 23:21Yeah, I try to as much as possible and I put it down to
- 23:25one of my mates was like, I and I never even considered this.
- 23:28This has only been like the last couple months.
- 23:30He was like, I hate when someone says this was wrong with the
- 23:34movie or this was good with the movie because then I'm watching
- 23:37the movie, waiting for that moment, waiting to react.
- 23:40And I was like, huh, that's so interesting.
- 23:43Like I've, well, I've kind of done it to you now 'cause I'm
- 23:46like the end scene, the end scene of Venora.
- 23:48So now you're just gonna be like creeping.
- 23:49I know. Don't worry, I live for
- 23:53spoilers. I actively look them out like I
- 23:55have a problem. I don't know if it's an anxiety
- 23:58thing or whatever but it makes me more comfortable.
- 24:00More excited for a movie to know.
- 24:02Like with Thunderbolts coming out, I already know I know it
- 24:05all. I'm still hyped to see it
- 24:08though, but I some people really, really do hate spoilers.
- 24:13I've seen that happen. Like they're like, you just
- 24:15ruined the whole movie for me. It's like, my gosh, I get it.
- 24:19So I think you going into movies completely blind.
- 24:21That's so that's so different because usually movie podcasts
- 24:25are like, oh, this trailer came out, let's watch it together.
- 24:27Let's look into it. Let's take it scene by scene and
- 24:32you go completely blind. That's really cool.
- 24:35Yeah, I feel really lucky that I, like, I'm mostly on the
- 24:38Internet too, and I do see things and things happen like
- 24:41all the time, but I hardly ever stumble across a spoiler.
- 24:45Like I get sad when people spoil stuff and don't say spoiler
- 24:49ahead. Like, you know what?
- 24:51If I see spoiler ahead and I continue to read it or watch it,
- 24:54that's on me. I'm OK with that.
- 24:56It's just when it's like spoiled, you're like, Oh no, I
- 25:00will say for horror movies, I'm a big scaredy cat, but I still
- 25:03try and watch them. I definitely, if I'm feeling
- 25:06really worked up and nervous, I will do a quick like, OK, OK, I
- 25:10can, I think I can handle this. I think I can do it.
- 25:13Because obviously words spoiling something on a screen is
- 25:16different to your viewing experience.
- 25:18Like you say about Thunderbolts, like you may know what's going
- 25:21to happen. You don't know what that's going
- 25:23to look like though. So you know, it's still
- 25:25something you can explore and still be new and exciting.
- 25:30So you brought up sinners. Have you seen sinners?
- 25:33I haven't seen that one. Yet no, Oh my gosh, I I want to
- 25:36see it, but like, I don't like blood.
- 25:38So I'm just kind of asking everyone what they think of it,
- 25:41just to live vicariously through them.
- 25:44Yeah, isn't that another one that's on paper seems a little
- 25:47silly, like, you know, 1 actor playing twins and like, you
- 25:51know, vampires or something. Like on paper you're like I OK,
- 25:55like I'm not sure how this is going to work.
- 25:57And then apparently it's like very good.
- 26:00Apparently it's like the best reviewed movie in the past
- 26:02decade. And I remember kind of like
- 26:04making fun of it before. Not like the actors or anything,
- 26:07but discussion film on discussing film on Twitter.
- 26:12They put out alerts. They're like a movie poster for
- 26:16sinners. But they were calling the twins
- 26:20Michael B Jordan and Michael B Jordan.
- 26:22And I remember just laughing every time, like, what is this
- 26:25about? To Because they're like, here's
- 26:27the trailer showing Michael B Jordan and his twin, Michael B
- 26:30Jordan. I was like, it's the same guy.
- 26:32It's the same dude. So I was like, I'm not taking
- 26:35this seriously. They're not taking it seriously.
- 26:37So it's just going to be funny. And then everyone sees and
- 26:40they're like, this is the best thing I've ever seen in my life.
- 26:42Like I I'm so happy about it though.
- 26:47I don't know if you have Letterbox, but they have like
- 26:49the top 250 narrative list on Letterbox and it's jumped to 197
- 26:54already. Yeah, like movies don't get on
- 26:57that list. Like 12 Angry Men's on that list
- 26:59from like 1953. Like movies don't really get on
- 27:02there that quickly and it's already 197 out of 250 that was
- 27:06lost. I checked.
- 27:08Yeah, I don't have letterbox because that just that's just
- 27:11another thing to do because I review movies, Marvel movies and
- 27:15that on my my podcast. So it's like I'm not doing all
- 27:19that extra work. I'm good.
- 27:22Yeah, I like it just to log everything.
- 27:23I never, I hardly ever write or review anything.
- 27:27Like I just, I don't know how people can write everything they
- 27:31see. Sometimes I'm like, I just liked
- 27:34it. I don't know.
- 27:35Yeah, like, I review comics for nerdinitiative.com and some of
- 27:41the people I review comics with, they just have like, this
- 27:43beautiful things, like, and then you don't see the climatic part
- 27:46of this story that dates back to 1979.
- 27:49And I'm like, I really like their outfits.
- 27:53I, I think they're nice. It's like, get it?
- 27:57They I always have the most random like loves or gripes
- 28:00about movies like I'm like not didn't like it, didn't like that
- 28:04outfit. I'm like they give off a bad
- 28:06energy. Didn't like them.
- 28:09I'm the same way. I'm like, you know, I didn't
- 28:10like the vibe or the way she walked into the situation.
- 28:14She just knew what she was doing.
- 28:16And other people are like that, you know, the biggest part of
- 28:19the movie was, was the story throughout how everyone felt.
- 28:23And I was like, you know, like. But she didn't have to make that
- 28:27face, you know? Yeah, Yeah.
- 28:30That's, that's actually interesting you bring that up as
- 28:32well. That's definitely like one thing
- 28:35I didn't say is like what I enjoy about cinema as well.
- 28:39I know I just was like saying I will enjoy those movies for like
- 28:42the themes but half the time I'm only looking if there's like fun
- 28:46names. Like Sky High is one of my
- 28:48favorite superhero movies because one of the characters
- 28:51names is War and Peace. And I just think that is like
- 28:54top tier cinema. That is like, who thought of
- 28:58that? I love Sky High so much and I
- 29:03remember when I first saw it I was like war and peace.
- 29:07Yeah. Stupid name.
- 29:09And then my dad was like War and Peace and I was like, that can't
- 29:13be it. No one's that smart.
- 29:14No one can think about that. That's just not real.
- 29:17I literally like draw on the floor every time I see him come
- 29:21on screen. Can I just say as a fellow sky
- 29:23high fan, Layla and Warren. They were in game to me.
- 29:27They should have ended up together.
- 29:30Yeah, I think I took issue with that my entire life.
- 29:34And we I keep hearing things about a sequel and then they're
- 29:38like, just kidding, but but really though, there's going to
- 29:40be a sequel, but just kidding. And I just feel like I'm being
- 29:43manipulated and gaslit. I don't appreciate it.
- 29:47It's probably the only movie ever that I'm like, yes, give me
- 29:50a sequel, give me Sky. College give me.
- 29:53Give me sky college like. Give me everything you have to
- 29:56do it while while Kurt Russell is still alive.
- 29:59He has to be there like every, I swear to you, every single day
- 30:05of my life, I hear him in my head say what's your name and
- 30:08what's your power? Every day.
- 30:10I don't know why I think about that every single day.
- 30:13And I cannot remember a time I didn't.
- 30:15Sky High is such a gateway into the MCU, isn't it?
- 30:20It's like the first superhero movie that everyone loves, and
- 30:22then it's like, oh, here's the MCU.
- 30:25I think that's it was something that we could relate to at that
- 30:28level because we were very young.
- 30:30I mean, the MCU, if I was that young, I think I'd look at it
- 30:33and not understand anything. It's just such a huge concept,
- 30:38but then you have sky High, you can relate to it, you understand
- 30:42the emotions, the feelings, what's going on.
- 30:45Your parents conceive can like it too.
- 30:48I think you're absolutely right. It's the gateway.
- 30:50Yeah, I start and Zoom. I don't know if you've heard of
- 30:53Zoom or seen Zoom before, but that's another kind of superhero
- 30:56one. I feel like I do, I feel like
- 30:59I'm blinking really hard Zoom. If I Google zoom this app is
- 31:05going to come up so. That's OK, that's OK, But that's
- 31:10definitely another one that I was like, yes, this is great.
- 31:12And then I go on the Internet, so I universally hate it.
- 31:14I was like ah Dang. I know so many movies that I'm
- 31:20like, you know, it's a really good one.
- 31:22Everyone's like, oh, you like that?
- 31:26Well, yeah. Like on the outside, you have to
- 31:33be like, duh. And then on the inside you're
- 31:35like, no, that's a little bit embarrassing, isn't?
- 31:38It yeah. And then you're like, how long
- 31:39have I gone not knowing that people hated that movie?
- 31:43And I've been talking it up my entire life like the animated
- 31:47Anastasia. I remember I probably watched
- 31:50that movie. I there's no way I haven't
- 31:52watched it under 500 times in my life.
- 31:54I was obsessed. And every time I bring it up,
- 31:57someone, they're like that inaccurate movie.
- 32:00It is so historically inaccurate.
- 32:02I'm like, it's a cartoon. Yeah, it's good.
- 32:05It's stuck with me. Yeah, I mean, you like what you
- 32:10like, Dezabelle. Yeah.
- 32:12So what movies do you like that like most people don't?
- 32:19I'm not sure I have like I can't really think of any off the top
- 32:22of my head. I know this is 1.
- 32:25My brother, if he listens to this, is going to be cringing.
- 32:28It's actually called Willy's Wonderland, and it's about
- 32:31murderous animatronics and it's got Nicholas Cage in it.
- 32:35And the funny part about that movie is he doesn't, he doesn't
- 32:39talk, he doesn't say a word the whole movie.
- 32:42And it was supposed to be like a little like Five Nights at
- 32:46Freddy's before Five Nights at Freddy's and The Thing.
- 32:48And the plot is messy. It's like, you know, show, don't
- 32:52tell is the best part of cinema. They tell you, they hold your
- 32:55hand the whole way. It's not good CGI, It's not good
- 32:59graphics. But I love that movie so much.
- 33:02I've seen it so many times. And every time I watch it, my
- 33:05brother's like, I cannot believe you're watching it again.
- 33:08And I'm like, dude, this movie is so good.
- 33:14As soon as you said Nick Cage is in the movie, I was like, of
- 33:17course he is. You didn't have to tell me.
- 33:19I I believe you. And like, yeah, he just doesn't
- 33:23talk and he has these little sunglasses on and he's just like
- 33:26the whole movie. And yeah, it's really just, it's
- 33:29so ridiculous. But I'm like, you know what?
- 33:31I always say this in the pot as well.
- 33:33Movies are entertainment 1st. And that movie is entertaining
- 33:37as hell. Like I love that movie so much.
- 33:41Oh my God, I've never heard of it, but it sounds, no offense,
- 33:46it sounds horrible. It sounds.
- 33:48It is horrible. It's really bad.
- 33:50It's really bad, but I think it's got like a 2.2 on
- 33:54letterbox, so you know, how bad could it really be?
- 33:58Probably pretty bad. Do you have any movies like
- 34:02that? Like are you a big fan of like
- 34:03Ant Man Quantum Mania or something like that?
- 34:07I I liked that movie but I can admit that movie had problems.
- 34:12One I I really liked, Well I really like the Ghost Rider
- 34:19movies which apparently everyone hates.
- 34:21But one that I get the most trash for is Thor The Dark
- 34:25World. Have you seen it?
- 34:27I have seen. It Yeah, everyone says they hate
- 34:30it. They're like, the writing is
- 34:31trash, it's trash, this is trash.
- 34:33And like you just don't see the vision.
- 34:35You just don't get it. You're not a real fan.
- 34:38You don't understand. I, I've only seen it once and
- 34:42the only reason I struggled to watch it is because I knew
- 34:46Ragnarok and Love and Thunder were next and I knew they were
- 34:50pretty visually. Like I'm visual like I love it.
- 34:53You could have a bad story, but if it's a pretty movie, I'm
- 34:55there. So I knew, I think I was like,
- 34:57come on and finish. I want to go because that movie
- 35:00is, you know, The Dark World. But it also is quite a visually
- 35:04dark and like not very colourful movie.
- 35:07And I knew they were coming. So I was like, but I didn't see
- 35:11the, the hate. I was like, it is what it is.
- 35:15Yeah, people were like, if there's a comic book superhero
- 35:20movie that people don't like, they immediately bring in the
- 35:23comics to it and they're like, well, it's not comic gaccurate.
- 35:25It's not this. This is what he's supposed to
- 35:27do. This isn't how they're supposed
- 35:29to get along. It's like, it's not real.
- 35:32It's just a movie. The comics aren't real either.
- 35:35It's fine. We're all OK.
- 35:38Plus isn't it probably like 100 comics per like movie?
- 35:41Like there'd be 100. Comics that.
- 35:44Yeah, like they're not going to get everything right.
- 35:48And it's not. The MCU isn't based off the
- 35:50comics, it's very loosely based off the comics.
- 35:53So you can keep up with MCU just fine without knowing anything
- 35:55comic wise. It just adds a little flavor if
- 35:58you do understand the comics because you can see those
- 36:01references and get really hyped about it.
- 36:04Yeah, like you're excited about the ballet shoes.
- 36:07I too would have been so excited about that as well.
- 36:10Yeah, it's like, you know. Something that the masses don't.
- 36:12You're like, oh, I know what that.
- 36:13Means, Oh my God, you feel so special.
- 36:16Like I was watching Daredevil Born Again.
- 36:18I was like, oh, I understood that reference.
- 36:20Oh, I'm so special. Oh my goodness.
- 36:23And they get online and everyone's like, Oh my God, did
- 36:26you see that? I was like, whatever, I I knew
- 36:30it first. Yeah, I love that.
- 36:33That's definitely me. Oh, I'm the opposite.
- 36:35Because I always watch the Marvel movies and then I'll
- 36:38watch the symbol because I know they're going to explain
- 36:40something I didn't know. And I know in Multiverse of
- 36:43Madness, I thought America was just a random character.
- 36:46And then they're like, no, like she's this teenage girl with all
- 36:48these Jean jackets. And I'm like, they even did
- 36:51costume accurate. Like that's what she looks like
- 36:54in the comics. I was so like blown away by that
- 36:56so. Yes, that gay little hero.
- 37:00I was so glad they gave her a little pride pen.
- 37:04They like went so full with it. And we haven't seen her since
- 37:09and it's been lonely because I really like her character.
- 37:12I really like who they got to play her.
- 37:15And it's just like, what are they doing?
- 37:16Because she's at every single premiere, Bless her heart, she
- 37:20shows up to everyone. It's been years.
- 37:23I probably would too. I'd be.
- 37:24Like I would see that even. If I was a little back
- 37:27character, I'd be like, see that person running?
- 37:28That's me. That's me right there.
- 37:30A. 100% she's able to get in because she's in the MCU and she
- 37:34rides that ticket all the way home.
- 37:36And I'm like, you know what? Yeah, I would too.
- 37:39If I was like you said, if I was a tiny, if I was cashier #4 in a
- 37:44movie 10 years ago, I'm going to the premieres.
- 37:49I would be too, why wouldn't ya? Exactly.
- 37:53So this has been so much fun talking to you.
- 37:56You're amazing. Your podcast is so much fun and
- 37:59I wish you so, so much, so much luck in the world.
- 38:03Podcasting is it's hard, but once you kind of realize like,
- 38:08OK, I'm just doing this for me, I'm not doing this to make
- 38:10money. I'm not doing this for
- 38:11attention. This is just what I want to do.
- 38:12Then it just it's fine. It's good.
- 38:16Yeah, I am very. Comfortable.
- 38:19Yes, thank you. That's so nice.
- 38:20I think on my first episode I was like whispering a little
- 38:23bit. I it was like 10:00 PM at night
- 38:25and my housemate was asleep. But now I'm like, Nah, I'm, I'm
- 38:29filming, I'm recording. Like, sorry.
- 38:32So can you tell my listeners where they can find you so they
- 38:35can follow you and give your podcast a listen?
- 38:38Yeah, sorry, just go onto threads if you can, if you have
- 38:42that one. It's just my name, Reece dot
- 38:45Crook, I think. And then I have my link tree
- 38:48there. I'm just currently based out of
- 38:50Threads really at the moment, but I also have my episodes on
- 38:54Spotify, Under the Crook Cut, YouTube and Apple Podcast.
- 38:58So that'll be a place to find the podcast.
- 39:00And then if you want to follow me like Threads is pretty much
- 39:03the way to go. It's the only one that matters.
- 39:06It's the only one that anyone feels comfortable on.
- 39:08It's so safe over there, I never want to leave.
- 39:11I never want to either. Whoever is listening to this
- 39:15episode, wherever you're listening to it, look under the
- 39:18episode into the show notes and you will find where you can.
- 39:21You can find the links where you can find Reese on threads and
- 39:25you can find her podcast and her link tree.
- 39:27Highly recommend check her out. She, as you can tell from this
- 39:30episode, she is just the best and I'm so excited to see where
- 39:33she goes. Oh, you're making me see how red
- 39:37I'm getting. That's so nice.
- 39:41Oh, no problem. Well, thank you so much for
- 39:43coming on. It's been such a pleasure to get
- 39:44to know you. Thank you.
- 39:46You as well. Maybe we'll do this again and
- 39:48we'll talk marvel or something. Don't threaten me with a good
- 39:52time, I am in. So anytime you want to do a
- 39:56Winter Soldier episode, I'm there.
- 40:00Well, I'm holding you to that. So we're just going to simp over
- 40:03Bucky for an hour and I'm fine with that.
