- 1:03end of this video because I'm going to share the biggest tip
- 1:06that I used to that I used to deal with pain.
- 1:09It's simple, it's practical, and it saved me more times than I
- 1:12can count. Welcome to Living with
- 1:15Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad, and the Reality.
- 1:19Real talk, real life, real community with Bryce Perry.
- 1:24Let's begin. You know, for me, pain often
- 1:27shows up in my hands. For example, if I mow the grass,
- 1:31I know what's coming the next day.
- 1:33My hands feel swollen, they feel like they're burning, they're
- 1:37sore. There's like little fires like
- 1:39are lighting up under my skin. It makes even the simplest
- 1:42things like opening a jar or typing feel impossible.
- 1:47And let me throw this at you. If you've ever had pain like
- 1:50this, let me know in the comments.
- 1:52What's the weirdest, most surprising pain with Parkinson's
- 1:55story you have. I read them all and I'm and it
- 1:57might help somebody else by sharing.
- 2:00Now, that's just one example because Parkinson's pain isn't a
- 2:05single thing. It comes in many different
- 2:07forms. You know, first there's let's
- 2:10talk about the types of different pains, though.
- 2:11First up, there's stiffness pain.
- 2:13You know, this one feels like my muscles are wrapped in duct
- 2:16tape. It's not sharp.
- 2:17It's more of a constant grinding ache and it's relentless.
- 2:23If you suffer on that, let me know that in the comments.
- 2:26And then you know what, there's joint pain because of bad
- 2:29posture and rigidity. My hips, my knees, my shoulders,
- 2:32they all start complaining, right?
- 2:34They they pick up the slack and I'm sure they make me know that
- 2:38they're doing more of the work. How about that you suffer with
- 2:42that, Let me know. And those kind of comments as
- 2:44well. And next is dystonia pain.
- 2:47Now that's the that's when the curls cramp and the curl in
- 2:51directions that they're not meant to.
- 2:53You know, when it happens, I look like I'm doing some new
- 2:56form of interpretive dance, which is only funny if you're
- 2:58watching and not if you're me. I hate that.
- 3:01And I've been dealing with that since before I got diagnosed
- 3:05just before. How about you?
- 3:08Do you suffer from that? Let's let me hear that in the
- 3:10comments as well. And then there's the neuropathic
- 3:12pain. Now this is the burning,
- 3:15tingling, electric shock kind of stuff.
- 3:18Feels like my body just downloaded a virus instead of an
- 3:20update. Totally unpredictable and drives
- 3:23me insane. Drives me crazy.
- 3:26If you deal with that in the comments let me know.
- 3:29And finally, medication related pain.
- 3:31Now when my meds wear off, sometimes the pain comes rushing
- 3:35back like a wave. You know?
- 3:37One minute you're completely fine and the next you're sore
- 3:40from head to toe. So yeah, pain shows up in a lot
- 3:45of ways. But the worst part?
- 3:47Hardly anybody talks about it. You know, doctors are busy
- 3:51juggling tremors, stiffness, medication schedule, side
- 3:54effects, and I believe in the just pain just gets shoved to
- 3:57the bottom of the list. But here's the truth.
- 4:00Some days pain is the most disabling part of Parkinson's.
- 4:04And because it's barely mentioned, it blindsides people.
- 4:08You end up thinking, did I miss the memo?
- 4:10Was there a page in this Parkinson's manual that I didn't
- 4:13get? Did they leave this part out?
- 4:15What's going on here? But here's the good news.
- 4:19While we can't always stop the pain, there are things we can do
- 4:22to manage it better. So let me walk you through a
- 4:25few. Now, these are what I use for my
- 4:27coping strategies. OK.
- 4:29And the first one is this. You have to pace yourself.
- 4:32Parkinson's pain loves to sneak up when I push too hard, so I've
- 4:36learned to build in micro brakes before it hits.
- 4:39For example, if I'm doing yard work, I'll set a timer to stop
- 4:42every 20 minutes. If I wait until my hands are
- 4:45like screaming at me, it's way too late.
- 4:48So think about what you do. What bothers you?
- 4:51Well, if you know what's going to happen, do it in blocks.
- 4:55Break it up. Break it up in blocks and start
- 4:59breaking before it starts hurting.
- 5:01Another big 1 is a gentle massage.
- 5:03Now I don't mean the fancy spa treatment, although that would
- 5:05be cool. But I roll it.
- 5:07I roll a tennis ball around under my hands or or use a
- 5:10stress ball to loosen things up. It hurts a bit while I'm doing
- 5:13it. It's like pushes on it, but but
- 5:16the next day my hand thanks me that I did it before I started.
- 5:20So again, it's like, like they say, stretch before you move,
- 5:22right? Same idea.
- 5:23Whatever it is that you're dealing with where that pain is,
- 5:25If it's a pain in your back, stretch that back up before you
- 5:27do like the housework that's going to hurt or it's in your
- 5:30hands like me. Do some massage it, get it
- 5:32ready. OK, Now the third one is the is
- 5:36the contrast to heat and cold. Now warm water relaxes the
- 5:39muscles and then a quick dip, quick dip in cool water helps
- 5:45with swelling. Now I know it sounds odd, but it
- 5:47works. It's like tricking my nerves
- 5:49into calming down. It's wild.
- 5:52Just try it. Warm them up, cool them down,
- 5:54warm them up, cool them down. It just, it works for me and
- 5:56it's worked for many others that I've talked to.
- 5:59And the fourth thing is breathing.
- 6:01You know, this one might sound soft, but it's real stress
- 6:04cranks up pain if I stop. If I stop and I do so do 5 deep
- 6:12belly breaths, it lowers the tension and the pain feels less
- 6:16sharp. It's kind of like again, hitting
- 6:18that reset button. OK, and finally, here's the one
- 6:23I teased at the start. The biggest tip that helped me
- 6:26with pain, Well, it's using adaptive tools now.
- 6:31I used to think that I just had to push through pain, but I've
- 6:34learned to work smarter. Added gloves for mowing the
- 6:37lawn, right? Irrigamic, Irrigonic.
- 6:40I can never say these words. Irrigonic handles or tools,
- 6:43right? Even swapping regular utensils
- 6:45for thicker grips now. These little changes, they don't
- 6:48cure the pain, but they stop it from getting worse and they keep
- 6:52me moving now. For me, gloves make all the
- 6:55difference. If I do yard work without them,
- 6:57my hands pay for it the next day with them.
- 7:00Pains manageable. It's not glamorous, not sexy,
- 7:04but it keeps me in the game. Now what about the science
- 7:09behind this? Well, here's the science in a
- 7:11nutshell. The dopamine.
- 7:13Dopamine doesn't just control movement and also plays a role
- 7:16in how the brain processes pain. When dopamine is low, it's like
- 7:20someone turned up the pain dial. Add stress and poor sleep and
- 7:24it's cranked even higher. And that's why these little
- 7:28strategies work. They don't fix Parkinson's, but
- 7:31they lower the load on the system that's already
- 7:33overworked. And that leads me directly into
- 7:37today's bright system. With Parkinson's, pain doesn't
- 7:42mean you're weak. It means your body's fighting
- 7:44harder than most people will ever know.
- 7:48And that's how I remind myself on those tough days.
- 7:51Yeah, it hurts. And I'm still here and I'm still
- 7:54fighting, and I'm still doing life today, every day.
- 7:58So that's the hidden Parkinson's pain nobody talks about.
- 8:01It's frustrating. It blindsides you and it hurts,
- 8:05but it doesn't define you. And because we've got
- 8:08strategies, we've got humor, and we've got resilience, we can
- 8:11win. Now I want to hear from you.

- 8:17up for you? Drop it in the comments.
