- 0:07Hi there everybody, this is Ralph Kiner. Welcome to another New York Mets game brought to you by Reingold Extra Dry and Cool Cigarettes.
- 0:17Today the Mets meet the Chicago Cubs here at the Polo Grounds and Lindsey Nelson, Bob Murphy and I are in hand to bring you every bit of the action.
- 0:24This is the final game of the homestand and the final game of this two game series. So far this year the Cubs and Mets have played seven games, coming up now the seventh, and they have split the first six three to three.
- 0:38This broadcast is authorized under radio lights granted by the New York Mets solely for the entertainment of our audience.
- 0:44Any publication, reproduction, or other use of the descriptions and accounts of this game without the express written consent of the New York Mets is prohibited.
- 0:53Right now the two starting pitchers warming up for the game here today on a beautiful day for baseball, the temperature in the low 90s.
- 1:01It'll be Bob Buell from Saginaw, Michigan going for the Chicago Dodgers.
- 1:06Bob with a record of six wins and five losses. This will be his second appearance against the Mets this year.
- 1:12And 15 for the Mets, Al Jackson from Houston, Texas. Al with a record of six wins and seven losses. Bob Buell a right-hander and Al Jackson a left-hander.
- 1:23So while they warm up, how about you checking your own supply of fine cold, Rhine Gold.
- 1:29Rhine Gold extra dry. Yes sir, put some Rhine Gold on ice because it can add a lot to your enjoyment of the game.
- 1:35Here is a beer with a clean, clear taste, brisk and bright all the way through. Rhine Gold is beer as beer should taste.
- 1:43Dry tells you why. I say right now would be a good time to light up a cool cigarette.
- 1:49Cool soda king. A cigarette that gives you rich metal tobaccos and extra coolness.
- 1:55And refreshing coolness you feel in your throat.
- 1:58But it's almost game time so settle back with a cold glass of Rhine Gold and enjoy the action.

- 3:24First game of this two-game series, won by the Cubs last night 4-1,
- 3:28behind the pitching of Larry Jackson.
- 3:31Now the second game about to come your way.
- 3:35Just in case you missed the scores of last night,
- 3:39the St. Louis Cardinals defeated San Francisco 6-5,
- 3:42and the Cardinals now in first place by one-half game over the Dodgers,
- 3:46who defeated Cincinnati 4-1 behind Sandy Kofax.
- 3:49In third place, the San Francisco Giants, they are one-and-a-half plus fast.
- 3:54And in fourth place, Cincinnati, they are two games behind the Ligamidus and St. Louis Cardinals.
- 4:00Cincinnati losing to the Dodgers, dropping back.
- 4:03And in fifth place, the Chicago Cubs, they are three games back.
- 4:08Temperature right about now is very close to 95.
- 4:12We predicted high between 95 and 100 here today.
- 4:15Now the Mets take the field.
- 4:18The Mets and the Cubs have played six games so far this year,
- 4:21with the Cubs winning three, the Mets winning three.
- 4:23Right here at the parlor grounds, the Cubs have won three of the four plays.
- 4:28Mets have a record of 28 wins and 45 losses,
- 4:31with 21 wins here in the parlor grounds against 18 outers.
- 4:35Mets go, conclude their home stand right here with this game today, and then go on the road.
- 4:41Now ladies and gentlemen, our national anthem.
- 4:44The national anthem.
- 5:14The national anthem.
- 5:44With the playing of our national anthem, we're about to have the final game of the Tom stand.
- 5:52You know, it's a big, wide, wonderful world we live in.
- 5:55There are so many ways to enjoy life.
- 5:58Boating, golf, tennis, swimming, picnicking, or just relaxing in the backyard.
- 6:03And you know what goes with all of this? Sure.
- 6:06Wine, gold, extra dry beer.
- 6:09It's a wonderful beer to enjoy on a wonderful day.
- 6:12In fact, wine, gold makes even ordinary days seem wonderful.
- 6:16It's the flavor that does it.
- 6:18It's the refreshing flavor that is Rheingold's alone.
- 6:21And dry tells you why.
- 6:23Rheingold's way of brewing is long, slow, and costly, but it pays off in taste.
- 6:28It gives Rheingold the happiest taste in beer today.
- 6:31Why not find that out for yourself?
- 6:34Next chance you get, open up or order up a fine, cold Rheingold.
- 6:39Discover why millions say, my beer is Rheingold the dry beer.
- 6:44Discover why Rheingold is New York's largest selling beer.
- 6:52Well, it's a warm day for baseball, but still not too warm for a fine game.
- 6:56And sitting right next to me, right beside me, a fellow right down to his shirt sleeves,
- 7:01and all set to go, I'll bring you the play-by-play as we get to go here.
- 7:05Lindsay Nelson.
- 7:07Thank you very much, Ralph.
- 7:09We were held up for just a moment as umpire and chief standlanders had them close both clubhouse doors
- 7:13out in center field.
- 7:15And that job having been accomplished, Ellis Burton steps into the batter's box to lead off
- 7:20against the left-hander Al Jackson.
- 7:22There's a swing and a pop coming back.
- 7:24Could be a play, but it is landing on top of the dugout and going out of play.
- 7:29So it is strike one now to Ellis Burton.
- 7:33Jimmy Taylor gave it a run, but could not get to that one.
- 7:37And Burton has won on the first ball, fished and solid off a strike one.
- 7:41Left-hander Al Jackson on the mound.
- 7:45Ellis Burton batting from the right-hand side.
- 7:49His switch hitter with a batting average of 263.
- 7:52He has one home run and three runs batted in.
- 7:55Jackson's pitch is checked and taken low.
- 7:58It's one and one.
- 8:00Burton started to go, but held up.
- 8:02Jim Rogers now on deck for the Chicago Cubs.
- 8:06Lou Klein is the coach at first and Verlin Rube Walker is the coach around at third for
- 8:12head coach Bob Kennedy.
- 8:14Here's the one-one pitch.
- 8:16It's a lead-up, full foul on the ground and out of play.
- 8:19Two balls and one strike.
- 8:23The nets with an infield.
- 8:24Kim Harkness at first base.
- 8:26Ron Hunt at second.
- 8:27Al Moran at short.
- 8:28Charlie Neal at third.
- 8:30Thomas is in left field.
- 8:32Jim Hickman is in center field and Duke Schneider is in right.
- 8:41The one-two pitch swung on and fouled off.
- 8:45Now it holds at one and two.
- 8:55It's a good day at the Polo grounds.
- 9:05Now Burton stands in with a wide stance.
- 9:09One-two pitch led up outside and it's 2-2.
- 9:18Ernie Banks is not in the starting lineup today for the Chicago Cubs.
- 9:22He's just been given a day's rest.
- 9:25Leo Burke is the first baseman in the Cubs lineup today.
- 9:30Now the 2-2 pitch swung on and missed.
- 9:33Strike three, strike him out.
- 9:41One man out, nobody on base.
- 9:42Andre Rogers coming up.
- 9:44Rogers is batting 2-12.
- 9:46He has two home runs and 15 runs batted in.
- 9:52Andre Rogers spent a good part of last evening explaining the game of cricket to Ralph Keiner,
- 9:58and Ralph now is completely versed in the English pastime.
- 10:02It's a great game because you can bat as long as you want to bat,
- 10:06and you don't have to run unless you hit the ball far enough to make it.
- 10:08Sounds like a good idea.
- 10:10Here's the pitch ender for Carl's strike.
- 10:14Andre, I explained that pretty well to you, didn't you, Ralph?
- 10:17Well, I got the message that way, but I'm sure it's not that way.
- 10:23I've never really understood that game, believe me.
- 10:28Here's the pitch low, and there on the short hop, Sammy Taylor's one and one.
- 10:32The amazing thing about Rogers is the fact that he never played one game of baseball as we know it
- 10:37before he was signed to a professional contract.
- 10:41Well, that takes faith, that's what that takes.
- 10:47Here's the one-one pitch.
- 10:49It's high, two and one.
- 11:09And now the two-one pitch.
- 11:11One-on and foul out, shot right off the plate, back out of play.
- 11:14Two and two to Andre Rogers, top half of the first inning.
- 11:21New York Mets will be going up to Buffalo tomorrow to play in Buffalo
- 11:25in an exhibition game tomorrow night.
- 11:26Buffalo is the Mets' top farm club.
- 11:29That game, incidentally, will not be broadcast or telecast.
- 11:32It's an exhibition game being played in Buffalo.
- 11:35Well, the clubhouse door is open again, and someone's standing there looking out,
- 11:38actually trying to get a little air is what they're trying to do.
- 11:41But umpire Stan Landis asks Al Foreman, the umpire's second, to get that door closed.
- 11:49And it is closed, and it's not two and two to Andre Rogers.
- 11:58Spun outside, out to a full count now.
- 12:07Now, it looks to me as though that little wicket you had down there last night
- 12:10might get in the man's way and swing it into the thing coming up here.
- 12:13Well, that wicket has a lot to do with the game.
- 12:15I haven't figured out what, but it does have something to do with it.
- 12:18All right, you have the swing and the foul ball, back and out of play.
- 12:20It's three and two.
- 12:22Actually, they call that the three dumps,
- 12:25and you knock off a little piece of wood on top of that, and you're out.
- 12:28Oh, is that what you do?
- 12:30I saw you taking that little piece of wood off last night.
- 12:32I thought you asked them how it was made or something.
- 12:37Looks like it could be knocked out pretty easily.
- 12:41How many outs do you get?
- 12:43I don't know.
- 12:46Here's a three-two pitch, and it's low.
- 12:49Andre Rogers has drawn a walk.
- 12:52He goes down to first.
- 12:56One man out, and Billy Williams is coming up.
- 12:58Williams is batting three-ten with ten home runs and 40 runs batted in.
- 13:03Left hand batter.
- 13:05About 20 seconds.
- 13:07The predicted high temperature today between 95 and 100.
- 13:22Here's a throw to first base. It's not in time.
- 13:37Jackson checks his runner and the pitch. Swung on and missed. Strike one.
- 13:58Again, Jackson checks and the pitch.
- 14:03He's going away for a ball. It's one and one.
- 14:07New York Mets will open up in Pittsburgh on Friday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 14:14And they play the Pirates again on Saturday night in Pittsburgh and a single game Sunday afternoon.
- 14:23Swung on and chopped off foul. One and two now. Billy Williams with Ron Santo on deck.
- 14:39Kyle Jackson working on the baseball for a moment.
- 14:44Ten feet was watered down just before the start of the game, but that moisture disappears in a hurry out here today.
- 14:52Here's a one-two pitch. Swung on to ground ball toward second. Ron Hunt up with it.
- 14:56He goes to Moran. He's out to throw the first not in time. He beats the relay as they got the lead runner.
- 15:02So Williams becomes the base runner as Rogers has been forced from second baseman Ron Hunt to shortstop Al Moran.
- 15:10Two away and Ron Santo is coming up batting three-twenty-six. Ten home runs and 52 runs batted in.
- 15:17He's having a great season and Ralph Kana I know had him on last night as a guest. Ralph, what did he say he's doing different this year?
- 15:23He claims the fact that he has put on about 15 pounds and that's the reason why he's hitting so much better.
- 15:29He's also picked up more confidence and he also gives credit to the ball club.
- 15:33Club playing better. He's been playing better.
- 15:36All right, here's the pitch and it's low for ball one.
- 15:40Santo is third in the National League and runs batted in. Henry Aaron leads with 54. Bill White has 53 and Ron Santo 52.
- 15:48He's right up there.
- 15:55No scoring. We're in the top half of the 3th inning.
- 16:00Let's step in there for a call strike. It's one and one.
- 16:06Ron Santo is the number five man in the National League batting race.
- 16:11The Red Oak Clementi of Pittsburgh is on top. Tommy Davis for the Dodgers. Bill White are the cards. Dick Goer are the cards.
- 16:16And Ron Santo of the Chicago Cubs.
- 16:21Here's a throw over and Billy Williams gets back safely.
- 16:26Here's the pitch. Let's step outside.
- 16:30Two and one.
- 16:35I got a few friends Ralph. I'll be pleased to know that somebody has attempted to improve performance to added weight.
- 16:41That could be a boon to a lot of my friends.
- 16:46Go change a hole 30 right around.
- 16:51Jackson checks.
- 16:56Here's two and one.
- 16:59And it's a one hopper going on pass.
- 17:03Hunt and hunting for third now is Billy Williams.
- 17:06Snyder recovers. Plays it back in. Williams pulls up safely at third and on it first is Santo with a base hit.
- 17:11It is short at the base hit.
- 17:15Although the diamond center still is flashing error.
- 17:21Press box P.A. is correcting it repeatedly.
- 17:26It scored as a single. Hunt was getting in position to play it on one hop but he didn't handle that one.
- 17:31It went right on out in the center field and the Cubs are up making gestures up toward the official score position in the press box.
- 17:40Having seen the E time but it's now on the scoreboard as a base hit.
- 17:45Runners at first and third and two men out and Leo Burke is up.
- 17:50He has gone by the third and it's off the glove of Charlie Neal.
- 17:54He recovers plays the second not in time and a run that score.
- 17:58As Billy Williams crossed the plate.
- 18:03Leo Burke with the ground smash to third.
- 18:10With squared deep by Charlie Neal.
- 18:13It was not handled and he did recover and played on the hunt but not in time to get Ron Santo.
- 18:18Coming up now is Ken Hubbs.
- 18:23I'll tell you what the scoring decision is on that. It's a tune that's made.
- 18:31Ken Hubbs batting 239.
- 18:34Six homers 24 runs batted in.
- 18:40Here's a swing and a foul ball coming back and Taylor's coming at it but he has no play.
- 18:47Leo Burke's ground ball has been scored as an error on Charlie Neal.
- 18:54Which means there is no run batted in there.
- 19:02Ken Hubbs up with a strike one count. Runners at first and second.
- 19:07One run in two men out.
- 19:16Larry Bernard throwing in the med bullpen.
- 19:20Swing and a little nubbit on the third baseline. Jackson up with it. He'll go to first and he pulls him off the bag.
- 19:26He's safe and the bases are loaded.
- 19:28Harkness had to come off the bag to make the play and the bases are loaded.
- 19:39And the official scorer has charged an error against Harkness at first base.
- 19:44Jackson gets an assist and Harkness has been charged with the error by the official scorer.
- 19:55Dick Bertell is coming up now batting 248. Two home runs and eight runs batted in.
- 20:09The Cubs lead here by a score of one to nothing.
- 20:15Pitch is low for ball. Ron Santos the baserunner at third. Leo Burke at second. Ken Hubbs at first.
- 20:27And again the Chicago Cubs and the Dugout tearing up at the position of the official scorer.
- 20:34The Cubs had a busy first inning I'll say that for them.
- 20:40Here's a swing and a ground ball. It is deep to Moran. He plays over to Hubbs just in time for the fourth.
- 20:45That's the only play he had.
- 20:47The side is retired as that ball was taken deep in the hole and Moran got it over to Hubbs at second in time to fourth.
- 20:55So that end, the top of the first, the Cubs got only one run.
- 20:59On one hit there were two errors and two left. So at the end of a half inning it's the Cubs won the match coming up.
- 21:08Nothing.
- 21:10What's your idea of a wonderful day? An excursion into the country? A day on the sound trip to a lake?
- 21:17Or maybe that long journey into the backyard with your portable radio and this is a good day for that.
- 21:22No matter which any day becomes a little bit more wonderful when you have refreshing Reingold beer on hand.
- 21:28Yes sir, Reingold is something special when it comes to beer and dry tells you why.
- 21:33Reingold's way of brewing is long, slow and costly but you can measure the difference in taste.
- 21:39Reingold is beer as beer should taste, brisk and bright and clean clear through.
- 21:44And isn't that the way you want your beer to be? Well sure it is. So make Reingold your beer.
- 21:49Join the millions who say my beer is Reingold, the dry beer.
- 21:53Find out for yourself why Reingold is New York's largest selling beer.
- 21:58Matter of fact, have a glass right now.
- 22:02...
- 22:15Going into the bottom of the first line, Jim Hickman will be up to lead off for the New York Met.
- 22:23He'll be followed by Ron Hunt and Duke Snyder.
- 22:26...
- 22:29Bob Buell on the mound has won six games and lost five thus far this season.
- 22:36Leo Burke is at free space, Ken Hubbs at second.
- 22:39Andre Rogers at short and Ron Santor at third.
- 22:42Billy Williams in left, Nelson Matthews in center, Ellis Burton in right.
- 22:45Here's the pitch swung on and fouled off to strike one.
- 22:48Bob Buell is 34 years of age. He is 6'2", 190 pounder from Saginaw, Michigan.
- 22:53His record against the Mets this season, no victories and one loss.
- 22:56His lifetime record against the Mets, one victory and two losses.
- 23:00Swing and a foul ball on the ground, out of play.
- 23:03Two strikes out to Hickman, he's batting 232.
- 23:06Seven home runs and 29 runs batted in.
- 23:13Bob Buell had some great games this season.
- 23:16Bob Buell had some great years with the Milwaukee Braves before being traded to the Chicago Cubs.
- 23:23Swing and a ground ball, Santor on a big hop, knocks it down, picks it up, throws on and in time he's out.
- 23:30Santor moving across in front of shortstop Andre Rogers.
- 23:34Saw the ball come up on a big hop and he knocked it down and just kept playing it on one dribble right on over the first in time.
- 23:41Ron Hunt coming up, batting 268, four home runs and 18 runs batted in.
- 23:50The Cubs are leading 1-0.
- 24:01But you swung on as a ground ball is short. Andre Rogers scoops it up and plays on to Leo Burke, two away.
- 24:08Duke Snyder coming up now. Duke's batting 225 with 12 home runs and 27 runs batted in.
- 24:27Duke had a home run last night that put the Mets out in front but they didn't maintain that lead very long.
- 24:33Cubs won last night 4-1. Pitch is outside football.
- 24:48Going away at two and on now to Duke Snyder.
- 24:52Mike Thomas is in the on deck circle.
- 25:03Here's a swing and a drive to right center and coming over to backhanded is Ellis Burton for the odds.
- 25:09Ellis Burton with a long run over to his right and he reached across with a backhand stab to Rob Snyder of extra bases.
- 25:17The side is retired and in the bottom of the first the Mets got no runs on no hits, no errors and none left at the end of an inning.
- 25:24If the Cubs won the Mets nothing.
- 25:30New York Mets will be opening up at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh on Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
- 25:39Then they'll continue on over to Chicago. Mets will be in Chicago for the Fourth of July doubleheader.
- 25:44They will come back here on Friday afternoon July 5th to meet the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 25:50Saturday night July 6th will be the first Saturday night game of the season at the Polo Grounds.
- 25:55It'll be date night and variety night. There'll be lots of entertainment here.
- 26:00And then Sunday afternoon July 7th it'll be with the Mets and the Pirates.
- 26:06All right of course bringing in Roberto Clemente, Bill Maseratsky, Bob Bailey, Don Clem Dunham, Bob Friend, Roy Faith and company.
- 26:14Tickets are now on sale for that series at the Mets ticket location.
- 26:18Grand Central Station at the foot of the Vanderbilt Avenue route and Pennsylvania Station in the Long Island Waiting Room.
- 26:24The ticket office here at the Polo Grounds on the Eighth Avenue side street level is open seven days a week.
- 26:30Ticket reservations at any of the Howard Closed stores and the mailing address is ticket manager Polo Grounds New York 39 New York.
- 26:37Bought seats at $3.50 each, reserved seats at $2.50 each, enclosed $0.25 additionally for postage and for handling.
- 26:48In the top of the second Nelson Matthews is coming up for the cut.
- 26:55He's the center fielder. Left the Al Jackson with the pitch. Swung on as a high fly ball to right center.
- 27:04Hickman is coming across. He's there waiting. Jim Hickman makes the catch.
- 27:10That'll bring up pitcher Bob Buell. Buell this year has been up 43 times and has five base hits.
- 27:24He once went more than 80 times, 89 times without a base hit.
- 27:39Jackson with the pitch. It's in there for a call strike to Bob Buell.
- 27:54There's a swing and a ground ball to the right side. Jackson knocks it down. He'll have to play it now in time and he does.
- 28:02Jackson knocked it down and then had to scramble back a couple of steps, pick up the ball, make the pivot and peg on, but Buell wasn't trying to run it out on a hot day anyway.
- 28:10So it is two away and Ellis Burton coming up. He's the man who turned in the sparkling catch on tonight.
- 28:15He lands out a moment ago and he goes back to the town to give Buell time to get back to the dugout.
- 28:20Incidentally, Tom Watson, a veteran daily news photographer in the hospital at Bellevue.
- 28:26Tom, Charlie Hopps, your coworker and all the boys along Photographers Row here say get well quickly.
- 28:34Certainly hope you do.
- 28:39Ellis Burton's been up one time and he struck out swinging.
- 28:48This pitch is low for ball. The Cubs are leading here by a score of one to nothing.
- 29:01Jackson's pitch outside for ball. Two and oh.
- 29:18Two men out and nobody on base.
- 29:23Swing and a drive deep to left. It's way back going, going and it is over the rooftop for a home run. It is number two for Burton.
- 29:31Ellis Burton's bill is on the right over the upper deck and on out of sight and left field.
- 29:39The Cubs lead by a score of two to nothing.
- 29:49That brings up Andre Rogers. He's been up one time and he walks.
- 30:05Jackson's pitch in there for a call strike.
- 30:10Coming into today's game, the New York Mets in 32 home dates had drawn 534,881 paid at the polo grounds.
- 30:22That's in there for a call strike two.
- 30:40Pitch is high. One and two to Andre Rogers.
- 30:49Very little wind blowing. The flag's barely stirring here at the polo grounds.
- 30:55Here's the one-two pitch. That's up high and it's two and two.
- 31:07Chicago Cubs started the day only three games out of first place in the National League standings.
- 31:18Two pitch, a little high and it's out full. Now it's three and two.
- 31:37They have pitch, one on and has a fly ball to right.
- 31:42Down in the corner, Schneider comes fast, can't get to it. It bounces up in the stand for a ground rules double.
- 31:49Right down in the right field corner, took one big bounce up into the stands. It is a ground rules double.
- 31:54Schneider could not get to it. He had led up to try to play it off the wall.
- 31:58Hunt was going back. He couldn't get to it.
- 32:02So Andre Rogers on with a two-bagger.
- 32:08Here's Billy Williams, left-hand batter. And up one time and forced Rogers on a ground ball.
- 32:33Again, Larriva and Arthur's up and throwing the bullpen for the Mets.
- 32:36Here's a swing and a fly ball to center. Hickman is right there.
- 32:40Moves over a couple of steps and makes the catch.
- 32:43So in the top of the second, the Cubs got one run on two hits. No Mets errors and one Cubs left.
- 32:48And at the end of an inning and a half, it's the Cubs two and the Mets nothing.
- 32:56Chug them up, chug them up, chug them up, chug them up, chug them up, chug them up, chug them up, chug them up.
- 33:00You from Rheingold, the Chug-a-Mug.
- 33:02No more glasses you have to wash and no more deposits you have to pay.
- 33:06I can even throw my opener away.
- 33:09Why sure. Chug-a-Mug is Rheingold's new wide-mouth container with a top that's so easy to open.
- 33:14You just pull the metal tab on top straight out, then straight up and pull off the top.
- 33:19You drink right from Chug-a-Mug's wide mouth.
- 33:22Inside's the same great Rheingold Extra Dry you love in cans, bottles, and on tap.
- 33:28Chug-a-Mug holds the same, costs the same as a 12-ounce can.
- 33:32Chug-a-Mug, no glasses, no openers, no deposits.
- 33:36My beer is Rheingold's Dry Beer.
- 33:40Chug-a-Mug is the new way to fang a beer.
- 33:44Better get some today.
- 33:46Chug-a-Mug's what you say.
- 33:48What a great way to drink Rheingold beer.
- 33:52We're going down to the bottom of the second.
- 33:54Before we do, we pause for station identification.
- 33:57A-10 in your dial, WGY's connected in New York.
- 34:01Our weather, sunny and warm, the barometer falling.
- 34:04Our present temperature stands right now at 88 degrees at 229.
- 34:12Frank Thomas up to lead off for the Mets in the bottom of the second.
- 34:15Facing right-hander, Bob Views.
- 34:17Fitch is in there for a call, strike one.
- 34:26Again, the pitch swung on line out in center field.
- 34:28It's a base hit for Thomas.
- 34:30Nelson Matthews up with it, plays it back in.
- 34:32Thomas turns and holds with a single to center.
- 34:36Thomas, the ball is in the middle of the field.
- 34:39Thomas, the ball is in the middle of the field.
- 34:41Thomas, the ball is in the middle of the field.
- 34:43Thomas turns and holds with a single to center.
- 34:47That will bring up Sammy Taylor.
- 34:49Taylor is batting number five in the batting order.
- 34:51He is hitting 320.
- 34:52He's been up 25 times and has eight hits.
- 34:54Six runs batted in.
- 35:11Thomas leads it first.
- 35:12Leo Burke holds against the runner and the pitch is high and away for ball one.
- 35:16Sammy Taylor, left-hand batter.
- 35:18Tim Harkness moves up to the on-deck position.
- 35:28Views checks again.
- 35:30Fitch is low and a bluff throw to first, not made by Dick Bertell.
- 35:34He caught the arm, did not throw.
- 35:37Two and 0.
- 35:48Now the crowd with a chant of, let's go Mets.
- 35:52Playing a ground ball foul down past Trippi Lavagetto, the Mets' coach at third.
- 35:58We have a lot of midget Mets on hand this afternoon.
- 36:01They were arriving by the busload when we came into the ballpark
- 36:04and they are stretched out in the left field corner here, both lower and upper deck.
- 36:16So if the Mets can get something started, it will likely strike a happy response.
- 36:23Here's two on pitch, swung on, foul back.
- 36:26Counts two and two.
- 36:41Thomas taking his lead at first now.
- 36:43Leo Burke is not holding him on there at this point.
- 36:49Cubs lead two-nothing.
- 36:52Breaking ball fouls to ground ball to second.
- 36:54Cubs has it, he plays over to Rodgers.
- 36:56He's out to throw to first, he's out to double play.
- 37:00That is double play, number 68 for the Chicago Cubs this season.
- 37:04New York Mets have 71.
- 37:08Tim Harkness coming up, two men out, nobody on.
- 37:12What better time than right now to order up or open up another Rheingold Extra Dry.
- 37:17Better as beer should taste.
- 37:24Pitch to Harkness is low for ball one.
- 37:35Here's pitch, swung on and miss.
- 37:38One and one.
- 37:40It's a normal course of events.
- 37:42Bob Buell works extremely fast.
- 37:44He gets the ball and throws it back.
- 37:49Swing and it's off to the corner and right.
- 37:52And this one is off the base of the wall.
- 37:54And he's being chased down by Priton and he throws on to second so that Harkness has to turn and hold it first.
- 38:00With a long single off the base of the wall in the right field corner.
- 38:09And that will bring up Charlie Neal with two men out.
- 38:12That is the second hit for the Mets off Bob Buell.
- 38:16Neal is batting 233 with three home runs and 18 runs batted in.
- 38:34And that pitch is in there for a call strike to Charlie Neal.
- 38:49Ground ball is short.
- 38:50Andre Rogers has it on a big hop.
- 38:52He plays to Kenny Hup for the fourth at second and the side is retired.
- 38:57And the bottom of the second.
- 38:59The New York Mets got no runs on two hits, no errors in one left.
- 39:02And at the end of two innings it is the Cubs two and the Mets nothing.
- 39:11Following the break for the All-Star Game, which incidentally will be held in Cleveland this year on July 9th,
- 39:18the Mets will be back to open up against the Dodgers and it'll be Wednesday night, July 10th.
- 39:26And that is a make-up game that was not on the original schedule.
- 39:29So if you have a printed Mets schedule, printed at the start of the season with the official schedule,
- 39:34this game will not be on it because it's a make-up of a game rained out previously.
- 39:38That's Wednesday night, July 10th, the Mets and the Dodgers here.
- 39:42And then they'll be in here on Thursday night, July 11th, Friday night, July 12th, and Saturday afternoon, July 13th,
- 39:49which will be Family Day and Ladies Day.
- 39:52And there'll be a two-inning Father-Son game preceding the regularly scheduled game
- 39:57between the Mets and the Dodgers.
- 40:00We'd advise you to get your tickets right now for that series. They are on sale.
- 40:05July 10th, 11th, 12th at night, and then the 13th Saturday afternoon.
- 40:12...
- 40:21During the top of the third and Ryan Santo is up to lead off for the Chicago Cubs.
- 40:28Been up one time in single. He's batting 329.
- 40:32...
- 40:57We have a delay here for the moment while Ron Hunt gets a little help with the equipment.
- 41:04Apparently he's doing a little work on his glove.
- 41:06It's Jim Harkness who's gone over to help him out, and Al Foreman, the umpire, now comes across to supervise.
- 41:14Hunt is down on one knee, working on the glove.
- 41:31Now we're set to go as Ron Santo steps in, face left-hander Al Jackson.
- 41:38The Cubs leading here by a score of two to nothing.
- 41:45...
- 41:58Again Jackson works outside football, it's two and oh.
- 42:13The Director of Athletics of the Cubs, Colonel Bob Whitlow, on hand again today as usual.
- 42:19Here's a play of the gunball, the third, taken deep by Charlie Neal, winged it across the diamond in time.
- 42:25Santo has gone it out.
- 42:28One away, nobody on, and Leo Burke is coming up.
- 42:33Burke was obtained by the Cubs from the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 42:39He had come to the Cardinals from the Los Angeles Angels. He started his major league career with the Baltimore Orioles.
- 42:53Here's a swing out of foul ball.
- 42:59Colonel Whitlow charts each ballgame played by the Cubs.
- 43:04Charts each pitch, so he is usually located directly behind home plate.
- 43:09And he's back there again today, located adjacent to Homer's box.
- 43:18There's a lot of fun on in foul-out.
- 43:21Apparently Colonel Whitlow was converting a few people down there last night because when we, on the television side, took a shot of Homer, there was a big banner in the crowd that said, let's go Cubs.
- 43:33And that's a little unusual at the fellow ground.
- 43:49And the pitch is outside.
- 43:51Actually we're in the long hot summer days and Colonel Whitlow himself is not actually doing the chart work today.
- 43:59He is having the secretarial work done by an assistant.
- 44:04That is more in line with the way of the military.
- 44:10Here's a one-two pitch, and it's high.
- 44:13Two and two.
- 44:26One man out, nobody on base. Cubs batting top of the third.
- 44:32Jackson lets up high.
- 44:34It's out full night, three and two.
- 44:49Here's a payoff pitch.
- 44:52Swung on, fouled off, he's still alive at three and two.
- 45:14Leo Burke waiting.
- 45:18Here's a swing out, a pop, fly to short right. Backpedaling is Ron Hutt.
- 45:23He's out in right field and makes the catch.
- 45:28Go away, nobody on and Kenny Hubb's coming up.
- 45:50Running a ground ball at third, taken deep by Charlie Neal, the long throw in time, and he's out.
- 45:58So Jackson gets the side out in order, the top of the third, no runs, no hits, no errors, none left.
- 46:02Into two and a half innings at the fellow grounds, it's the Cubs two, the Mets nothing.
- 46:09Now here's another Ryan Gold riddle for you.
- 46:12Here's the situation, runners on first and second, one out, the batter hits a foul fly toward the third base dugout.
- 46:19Third baseman makes a catch and then falls into the dugout.
- 46:23Now can the runners advance after the catch or what? Think about it.
- 46:28Ready?
- 46:30Both runners may advance one base since the third baseman being in the dugout was technically off the ball field.
- 46:37You know, we hope you enjoy our Ryan Gold riddle just as we hope you enjoy Ryan Gold X to dry.
- 46:42Here is a beer that's easy to enjoy. I mean, it's so much more refreshing than other beers.
- 46:48It's dry, tells you what.
- 46:50Ryan Gold has a taste that's brisk and bright and clean clear through.
- 46:54So enjoy the beer that's easy to get along with glass after glass.
- 46:58Ryan Gold X to dry.
- 47:01And the bottom of the third, Al Moran.
- 47:09We have to lead off to the New York Mets. This is his first time up.
- 47:12Cubs lead here to nothing.
- 47:30Bob Buell with the pitch and it's in there for a call of strikes.
- 47:43So far the Mets have only two hits off Buell.
- 47:46They're swinging a foul ball going over into the club dugout.
- 47:53Two strikes on.
- 47:56Don Landrum fielded the ball just on the steps the dugout.
- 48:09Pitch is low and away. One ball, two strikes now.
- 48:16As we mentioned, the Mets move into Pittsburgh this weekend.
- 48:19We'll bring you that entire series on radio and television.
- 48:25Here's a swing on a foul ball back in first.
- 48:28Leo Burke gives it a run and he makes the play.
- 48:32One away.
- 48:36Coming up now Al Jackson.
- 48:42Little Al coming up for his first time. He's been up 36 times this year, has seven hits.
- 48:52Jackson was brought in in relief and the second game Sunday when Tracy Stallard,
- 48:58showing signs of towering, Jackson came in to get the side out
- 49:06and preserve the victory for Tracy Stallard. Here's the pitch outside.
- 49:10One and oh.
- 49:28Here's the pitch outside.
- 49:31Two and oh.
- 49:36Jim Hickman kneeling on dug.
- 49:42Cubs two, the Mets nothing.
- 49:47In there for a called strike. Two and one.
- 49:58And now the two one pitch. Low and it's three balls, one strike to Al Jackson.
- 50:16It's highly walking.
- 50:19That is the first walk issued by Bob Buell as he has walked Al Jackson.
- 50:26Jim Hickman coming up.
- 50:38Well the Mets fans would like to see Jim give one a ride here to get the Mets back into this ball game.
- 50:49Burks holding the runner at first. Pitch misses outside and it's ball one.
- 51:01Bob Buell started the day with a record of six victories, five losses.
- 51:07In there for a called strike to Jim Hickman.
- 51:23Throwing a ground ball, second by Sandoz, third to pull Pivot to play the second.
- 51:28He's out and throw the first not in time.
- 51:31So the relay was beaten by Jim Hickman after he had four. Al Jackson at second to play going from Sandoz to Hubs.
- 51:38Sandoz moved to his left, gloved the ball and then made a complete pivot all the way around before taking on to Kenny Hubs coming at second.
- 51:46The relay to first is a little high and Jim Hickman beat it.
- 51:50So with two men out, Hickman becomes the base runner at first and Ron Hunt is coming up.
- 51:57This is a great year for Chicago baseball fans. The White Sox right now are in second place but in a virtual tie with the Yankees,
- 52:06trading only by percentage points.
- 52:09And the Cubs, although they're in fifth place in the National League standings, are only three games out of first.
- 52:17And that pitch is low for a ball. It's 1-0.
- 52:28Duke Schneider moves out to the on deck position.
- 52:35There's a swing and a fly ball to center and Elton Matthews lifts the glasses down and makes the catch.
- 52:41So in the bottom of the third, the Mets got no runs, no hits, no errors in one round.
- 52:47And at the end of three, it's the Cubs two, the Mets nothing.
- 52:53If you follow the New York Mets day in and day out, as so many of you do, you know of course that you can do it better with a copy of the New York Mets yearbook,
- 53:02which has now gone into its third printing of this year.
- 53:06The yearbook has features on Tasty Stengel, Shea Stadium, the Stadia Ramos floorboard, the coaches, information about the farm teams,
- 53:16statistical and biographical information about all of all players.
- 53:20And to get your copy, all you have to do is send 50 cents to Mets yearbook, Polo Grounds, New York 39, New York.
- 53:28And if you want to pick up your yearbook in person, they are available at the ticket location in Pennsylvania Station,
- 53:36that's in the Long Island Waiting Room, and at Grand Central Station, that's the foot of the Vanderbilt Avenue round.
- 53:41Or you can send in for it as we said, 50 cents to Mets yearbook, Polo Grounds, New York 39, New York.
- 53:50We'll be going here to the top of the fourth.
- 53:52I've been held up a little bit because Al Jackson was a base run on the last inning and he is taking his time coming out here, of course.
- 53:59It's a hot day at the Polo Grounds.
- 54:01There is no other afternoon action in the Major Leagues today.
- 54:06Everything is scheduled for tonight. The Pittsburgh paratroopers are at home to the Phillies.
- 54:12San Francisco Giants play the Cardinals and St. Louis.
- 54:15The Dodgers play the Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati and the Houston Cubs 45s play the Milwaukee Braves and Milwaukee.
- 54:21The American League, the Yankees are at Chicago, the Cleveland Indians are at Boston, the Washington Cedenters are at Kansas City,
- 54:27the Detroit Tigers are at Minnesota, and the Baltimore Orioles play the Los Angeles Angels in a twilight.
- 54:33Al Jackson still has not come out of the dugout here.
- 54:37Umpire Stan Landis, we're on the on-deck circle sort of waiting.
- 54:43The Mets are on the field with the exception of Jackson.
- 54:52As we go to the fourth, the Cubs have two runs on three hits and no errors.
- 54:57The Mets have no runs on two hits and two errors.
- 55:01This is the concluding game of this short two-game series.
- 55:06This is the concluding game of this homestand.
- 55:09The New York Mets will go to Buffalo tomorrow and play Buffalo tomorrow night.
- 55:13That game will not be broadcast or telecast.
- 55:15It's an exhibition game between the Mets and their top farm clubs.
- 55:20But they'll move on into Pittsburgh on Friday night and that one, of course, will be broadcast and televised.
- 55:26That will be the entire series in Pittsburgh.
- 55:29Then the Mets will be moving on over to Chicago, play the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field,
- 55:35and they'll stay there through the doubleheader on the 4th of July.
- 55:39That 4th of July doubleheader will be brought to you on radio and television.
- 55:45Al Jackson has come out now. He's gone out to the mountains to start his warm-up classes and all warmed up.
- 55:52And ready to take over here is a fellow who looks remarkably cool on a warm summer's day, but then he's cool, man.
- 55:57Here's Ralph Kinnis.
- 55:59Hi, Lindsey. And hi there, everybody.
- 56:01Hello, Lindsey. This is the kind of a day you can warm up by combing your hair.
- 56:05Al Jackson changed uniforms. That was the reason for his delay, changing tops.
- 56:12In the national league, the St. Louis Cardinals are back on top again.
- 56:16They defeated San Francisco 6-5.
- 56:18They scored five runs in the first inning and then needed a run in the bottom half of the ninth to defeat the Giants.
- 56:24Dodgers defeated Cincinnati last night 4-1. Sandy Koufax, a winning pitcher, over Jim O'Toole.
- 56:31Felt it off your 5, Pittsburgh 4 last night, and Milwaukee 4, Houston nothing.
- 56:35Houston has scored one run in their last 66th inning.
- 56:38Now Jackson's set to go. His first pitch is low, ball one to Dick Bertell.
- 56:43It'll be Dick Bertell, Nelson Matthews, and Bob Duell against the left-handers.
- 56:49Dick getting to a fourth by his first time up. He's betting 247.
- 56:54And Jackson comes back again. It's high, ball two. Two balls, no strikes.
- 56:59Cubs have two runs on three hits. Mets have no runs and two hits.
- 57:06One of the Cubs runs unearned.
- 57:12Now the 2-0 delivery, pulled foul right down through the third base coaching box.
- 57:18Merlin Walker jumping over the ball. It's strike one.
- 57:26Two balls and one strike.
- 57:32Bertell a right-hand batter with two home runs and eight runs battered in.
- 57:37Now Jackson back to work, and the pitch is fouled this time over the top of the coaching box into the stands.
- 57:43Five rounds to count out of two balls and two strikes.
- 57:58No one out here at the top of the fourth.
- 58:06And the 2-2 delivery is it down the left field line at base hit.
- 58:10The ball is off of the wall in the first bounce, played there by Thomas, a throw in holds Bertell at first base.
- 58:16Long single by Dick Bertell, and Jackson now has given up his fourth base hit in the ball game,
- 58:22and the Cubs have a runner at first base with no one out.
- 58:25And Nelson Matthews the batter. Matthews is betting 163. He'd fight out the center field his first time up.
- 58:34Matthews a right-hand batter. Big tall fellow, 6'4", and the first pitch by Jackson is inside tight for ball one, the slider.
- 58:52One ball, no strikes.
- 59:00This is Howell's second start against the Cubs. He lost his first time out right here in the foreground on Memorial Day.
- 59:08Now the one opens deep to center field. Back there is Jim Hickman. He's by the warning track now on it, and he makes the guess.
- 59:16Coming back to first base, Dick Bertell. One man out. The batter will be Bob Buell.
- 59:28Buell bounced back to the pitcher his first time up. He is batting 114, five hits and 43 trips, and the five hits,
- 59:35something he's not used to. He went all last year without a base hit.
- 59:42Buell finally got a base hit this year. Then he went off his rocker and came up with four more.
- 59:50He's a right-hand batter, Johnny Neal looking for the bunt, and the pitcher has taken outside ball one.
- 59:55Buell squaring around, then taking one ball, no strikes.
- 1:00:02Cubs do nothing over the Mets. One man out top of the fourth inning.
- 1:00:12Jackson in the stretch position, and now to first base, charging from third. As the throw went to first was Johnny Neal.
- 1:00:19Bertell at first base, just a short lead and back ahead of his tag. Now Jackson again to first base, again Bertell back.
- 1:00:33Set position again, and the pitch home is bounce foul down the third base side. One ball, one strike.
- 1:00:45You'll find that most of the managers nowadays do not go all the way with the bunt play.
- 1:00:50They'll swing around back and forth. One time they will bunt with the runner at first base.
- 1:00:55Next time they'll hit away, especially with the third baseman and first baseman charging so strongly.
- 1:01:05Now at one-one, the bunt is fouled down toward the first base side. Knock foul by Sammy Taylor, and the count is one and two.
- 1:01:16Returning to first base with one man out is Dick Bertell.
- 1:01:25The on deck batter is Ellis Burton, who has a home run in this game, his second of the year.
- 1:01:33Gov scored one run in the first, one in the second. We're in the fourth inning right now.
- 1:01:39And here's a bunt, a good one down toward first base. Picked up by Harkness, he fires the second base in time.
- 1:01:45And the fourth play is picked up at second base on Dick Bertell. That bunt actually was better than the result.
- 1:01:51It was bunted out toward first base, but Harkness, even though with a count one and two, charged quickly, came up throwing.
- 1:01:58Bertell, who is not fast, was forced at second base.
- 1:02:03Ball is picked up about 40 feet from home plate.
- 1:02:08Now two men out and Ellis Burton the batter. Burton the switch hitter had a home run over the top of the roof his first time up,
- 1:02:16his second time up, he struck out his first time up, and the first pitch to Burton is low for ball one.
- 1:02:34And Jackson with a slow change gets the strike. One ball, one strike. Burton batting 225.
- 1:02:41He's been around a while. He started playing ball in the St. Louis Cardinal organization back in 1955.
- 1:02:50He was picked up from Cleveland this year. One-one pitch fouled high in the air, back of home plate.
- 1:02:57They catch their sammit there and he makes the catch to retire the side.
- 1:03:04In the end, he no runs on one hit. There were no errors and one man was left out and the score at the end,
- 1:03:09it was a three and a half inning to play. The Cubs two, the New York Mets nothing.
- 1:03:13Now a word from Cool Cigarettes.
- 1:03:15Are you thinking of changing to a menthol cigarette?
- 1:03:18Well don't make a disappointing change. Make the right change. Come up to cool. Here's why.
- 1:03:25Your cigarette's not tasting cool enough unless you're smoking cool. You're not smoking cool enough until you've gone up to cool.
- 1:03:39Two can for magic, right and change, refreshing all day through. Feel extra cool and sing in your throat as cool comes through for you.
- 1:03:52You're not smoking cool, cool, cool enough until you've gone up to cool.
- 1:04:04Enjoy the extra coolness you feel in your throat when you smoke cool.
- 1:04:09Enjoy that bright clear taste all day long. Come up to cool. Cool with the pure white filter or cool without filter.
- 1:04:20The bottom half of the fourth inning with the Mets coming to bat. They need two to tie and Bob Bureau taking time before coming out to warm up.
- 1:04:27So we'll use the opportunity to pause for station identification.
- 1:04:31810 and your dial, WGY's, connect to the New York.
- 1:04:34Our weather is sunny and warm. The barometer falling. Our present temperature 88 degrees at 259.
- 1:04:42Ralph Garner along with Lindsey Nelson and Bob Murphy from the Polar Ground.
- 1:04:46Final game of the homestand. The Cubs on top two to nothing. We're in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 1:04:52And leading off for the Mets will be Duke Snyder. He'll be followed by Frank Thomas and Sammy Taylor.
- 1:04:57So the Mets will be setting up their third, fourth, and fifth batters.
- 1:05:02On the mound, Bob Bureau, he has given up no runs, allowed two hits.
- 1:05:08Struck out nine and walked one.
- 1:05:18Duke was robbed of an extra base hit his first time up by Burton in right field.
- 1:05:23One of the real great catches seen here this year.
- 1:05:26It was a backhand running catch to right center field.
- 1:05:29And the first pitch now to Duke is outside. A fastball for ball one.
- 1:05:37Snyder batting 224.
- 1:05:42Now the right-hander comes back and there's a deep fly ball to center field.
- 1:05:46J.C. Nelson, Matthews back on the warning track and he makes the catch.
- 1:05:51Matthews about three steps back on the warning track, 440 feet away.
- 1:05:57So Duke has hit the ball well and two times up and he is 0 for 2.
- 1:06:01Now bring up Frank Thomas.
- 1:06:11Thomas single to center field his first time up. He's batting 252.
- 1:06:17Frank in a slider and just punched the ball right in the center field.
- 1:06:22First pitch, slider high ball one.
- 1:06:31Gubbs two, Mets nothing. One man out, bottom half of the fourth.
- 1:06:36And the pitch back to Thomas has hit the left field.
- 1:06:39Coming in the left fielder and Bill Williams puts it away.
- 1:06:51Two men up, two men out now, Sammy Taylor. Sammy hitting to a double play his first time up.
- 1:06:57The 68 double play pulled off by the Cubs this year.
- 1:07:01Last year the Cubs set a record for their club in picking up double plays.
- 1:07:09And the first pitch to Sammy Taylor outside a fast ball for ball one. Taylor batting 308.
- 1:07:22And the next pitch is a strike called one ball one strike.
- 1:07:25Smokers, Kuhl's menthol magic brightens taste. You'll feel extra coolness in your throat.
- 1:07:37One ball one strike. And Buell comes back outside for ball two.
- 1:07:55A day like this the ball carries exceptionally well.
- 1:08:00And we've seen some long balls hit. There's a foul ball, the ball off of the front foot of Sammy Taylor.
- 1:08:10The home run hit by Burton was deep down the left field side on top of the roof.
- 1:08:16A long home run for a fellow who doesn't hit many home runs.
- 1:08:25Cubs lead 2-0. Now the 2-2 pitch by Buell hit down to first base.
- 1:08:30A big hop and Leo Berg picks it up, trots to first base and that retires the side.
- 1:08:36Bob Buell working the fourth inning in fashion.
- 1:08:39One, two, three, order and the score at the end of four.
- 1:08:42The Cubs 2, the New York Mets nothing.
- 1:08:50While no action going on in baseball during the daylight hours,

- 1:10:27Now Jackson starts to work here in the fifth inning and his first pitch to Andre Rogers is swung on a miss for strike one.
- 1:10:34Rogers has walked and he has picked up a grounds rule double.
- 1:10:39Hitting the ball right down the right field line the ball bouncing into the stands.
- 1:10:44Rogers batting 250 the right hand batter.
- 1:10:50And Jackson back again this time the fastball is thrown and the ball is fouled toward the right field side for strike two.
- 1:11:04Al Jackson 27 years of age from Houston Texas and the left hander now with a two strike delivery.
- 1:11:10And it's just high for ball one.
- 1:11:14Al has won six this year and lost seven his last out was a one three to one.
- 1:11:19He also picked up a save in the last series when he came in to protect the game for Tracy Stallard.
- 1:11:30There's a pitch back to Rogers and a line shot over the top of the second baseman's head.
- 1:11:35It could go for two picked up by Duke Stader.
- 1:11:37Here comes the throw and Rogers ends up at second base with a stand up double.
- 1:11:42Hit number five Al Jackson that ball was tagged.
- 1:11:47Ron Hunt at second base tried to jump forward couldn't get high enough and Rogers came up with two.
- 1:11:54No one out and the batter will be Bill Williams.
- 1:11:57Williams didn't do a force play his first time up and he scored the first run of the game when he scored an error by Charlie Neal.
- 1:12:07Cubs picked up their second run in the second inning on the home run by Ellis Burton and that's the way the score stands to the Nubbing.
- 1:12:15Williams also flied out so he is 0 for 2 in the first pitch to the left hand batters outside for ball one.
- 1:12:26Williams batting 3 0 8.
- 1:12:41And Jackson comes back with a fastball a swing and a foul straight back one ball one strike.
- 1:12:48Temperature at 3 p.m. 94 degrees.
- 1:12:53Not too bad because there's not much humidity.
- 1:12:57Real good hitters day.
- 1:12:59Pitchers don't like this kind of weather.
- 1:13:04One ball one strike and the pitch to Williams is taken inside ball two.
- 1:13:24Andre Rogers in second base with a short blade.
- 1:13:29Jackson with a look back there now back to the plate.
- 1:13:33And there's a foul ball right off the end of the bat.
- 1:13:36Ball spinning over toward the third base box seats and the count now two balls and three strikes.
- 1:13:44Williams way out in front of the change of curve.
- 1:13:57The on deck batter Ron Sando who has been red hot.
- 1:14:02Here's the 2 2 pitch to Williams.
- 1:14:04It's down the right field line but it's going to go foul.
- 1:14:07Ball goes into the upper deck.
- 1:14:09Williams going for a curve ball.
- 1:14:10The ball was hung inside and he hit the ball right down the line but foul by about 15 feet.
- 1:14:17So the count will remain at two balls and two strikes.
- 1:14:33Jackson sets and the pitch back is swung on and missed strike three.
- 1:14:38And now Jackson picked up his second strikeout his first out here in the fifth inning.
- 1:14:44And the batter coming up is Ron Sando with a runner at second base.
- 1:14:47The Cubs lead 2 to nothing.
- 1:14:59Sando singles the right field his first time up and he has now hit in six consecutive games.
- 1:15:05He grounded out the third his second time at bat.
- 1:15:09He has had 15 hits in his last 26 times up.
- 1:15:14And a slow change of pace is hit off the end of the bat down the short.
- 1:15:18Al Moran picks it up throws low on the third and the ball gets away from Harkness.
- 1:15:21Going over to third base after the ball got away.
- 1:15:24Andre Rogers it'll be charged in there and Al Moran.
- 1:15:29Moran came up throwing he had plenty of time because Sando is not a fast man but he could get nothing on the ball.
- 1:15:34The ball hit about 10 feet in front of Tim Harkness at first base and skidded down the ground.
- 1:15:39And the ball went under Harkness's glove and bounced off his right foot and bounced away.
- 1:15:45So the air the third in the ball game by the Mets.
- 1:15:50And the Cubs now threaten again.
- 1:15:52Runners at first and third the batter is Leo Burke.
- 1:16:03Leo was safe in an error his first time up and on that play the Cubs scored their first run.
- 1:16:09He also has popped out so he is 0 for 2 a right hand batter and the first pitch is low for ball one.
- 1:16:15Mets are playing the infield back looking for a double play.
- 1:16:22Burke acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 1:16:24He started the year with the Los Angeles Angels was picked up by the Cardinals and now has moved to the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:16:31He's betting 196.
- 1:16:34There's a hard smash through the middle scoring from third base is Andre Rogers.
- 1:16:39Holding that second base Ron Sando and the Cubs now lead 3 to nothing.
- 1:16:59Cubs now three runs on six hits and the batter coming into the batter's box is Kenny Hubbs.
- 1:17:16Larry Bernard up and drawing for the Mets in the bullpen.
- 1:17:19He was relieved in the ball game yesterday worked the ninth inning pitch the three batters got them all out.
- 1:17:25Here's Kenny Hubbs and his first pitch is hit deep to left field way back there.
- 1:17:29Thomas is back in the warning track by the bullpen and he makes the catch.
- 1:17:34Tagged up now at second base but not going over is Ron Sando.
- 1:17:38Sando was halfway down the line he went back to tag up couldn't get back in time.
- 1:17:42He could have moved over with no trouble at all as Frank Thomas caught the ball right by the bullpen warm up.
- 1:17:50Right near the pitcher's mound and now two men out.
- 1:18:03Two men out the batter Dick Bertell.
- 1:18:06Dick a right hand batter with one hit and two times up.
- 1:18:09He's betting 251.
- 1:18:14And the first pitch is fouled down in the dirt and back of the catcher for strike one.
- 1:18:21Dick Bertell the catcher for the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:18:26Now they're motioning down to the cup bullpen to move four of the players back in the sun off the playing field and into the bullpen area.
- 1:18:39For the Cubs looking for some shade you really can't blame them the cup bullpen is right in the sun right now the sun shining directly into it.
- 1:18:48And that's why it's a visiting bullpen.
- 1:18:51Home bullpen in the shade and that's the way it is in every ballpark.
- 1:19:01Now the one strike delivery to Dick Bertell a slow curve looked at for strike two.
- 1:19:09Boy it's hot out there because that sun beats right on top of the roof of the bullpen and also bounces right off of the wall and that wall radiating heat.
- 1:19:23Ninety-four degrees here at the Polo grounds at three o'clock.
- 1:19:28Cubs lead three to nothing in the heat.
- 1:19:31That's have two outs in the fifth inning.
- 1:19:35Now the pitch back a fastball hit through the middle that will score the fourth run.
- 1:19:39Coming around from second base in scoring is Ron Sano and holding at second base.
- 1:19:45On the base hit by Dick Bertell as Leo Burke.
- 1:19:49Cubs now four runs on seven hits.
- 1:19:52Two to nothing and the batter coming up is Nelson Matthews the center fielder and time is now called.
- 1:20:21Sammy Deanna with a discussion with Al Jackson on the pitching mound now coming back of home plate.
- 1:20:27Nelson Matthews the batter, right hand batter who has flied out the center field the two times he's been up.
- 1:20:42Runners at first and second base the Mets with two outs were in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:20:52And Matthews now sets and swings and fouls the first pitch off for strike one.
- 1:20:57Ball fouled over toward the third base coaching box.
- 1:21:03And Al Jackson will work with a new ball. Larry Bernard still throwing in the bullpen for the Mets.
- 1:21:13In the Mets fifth when they come to bat Al Jackson will be the fourth batter in the inning.
- 1:21:23Mets it out trail by four runs the Cubs with one run in the first one in the second two here in the fifth.
- 1:21:37Nelson Matthews batting at 161.
- 1:21:43And the one strike delivery is low for ball one a fastball.
- 1:21:48Count even at one ball and one strike.
- 1:21:53Andre Rogers let off with a double and Bill Williams struck out but Ron Sano was safe in an error.
- 1:22:02Rogers moving to third base where he scored when Leo Burke singled the center field and then after Hobbs swiped out the deep left
- 1:22:09Dick Wirtel drove in the second run in this inning.
- 1:22:14One run in there's a curveball it's over for strike two to Nelson Matthews.
- 1:22:28Cubs have four runs and two of them are unearned.
- 1:22:41One ball two strikes Jackson sets looks at second base and comes back to the plate and there's a swing and a miss for strike three to retire the side.
- 1:22:50Al Jackson's third strikeout in the game but in the inning the Cubs scored two runs on three base hits.
- 1:22:58There was one error and two men were left on and the score at the end a four and one half inning to play.
- 1:23:05The Cubs four the New York Mets nothing.
- 1:23:09Say smokers you tried one of the new menthol cigarettes only to find that after a pack or two it began to taste just like your old brand.
- 1:23:19You're ready to make the right change to cool filter kings.

- 1:24:15That's a four to tie the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:24:19They all send up Tim Harkness Charlie Neal Al Moran as their first three men and with Larry Bernard warming up still in the both end for the Mets.
- 1:24:28There's a good chance that if one of the three get on or more manager Casey Stinger will use a pinch hitter for Al Jackson.
- 1:24:44Tim Harkness down the batter's box Tim single off the wall his first time up.
- 1:24:51That's 10 better batting that to all nine.
- 1:24:57And his first pitch is a curveball for strike one on the mound for the Gubs Bob you'll Bob has given up no runs allowed only two hits they both came in the second inning.
- 1:25:07He has struck out none of what one and he comes back with a strike again for strike two.
- 1:25:21And the two strike delivery a fastball outside for ball one one ball two strikes.
- 1:25:34Here's the one to pitch an overhand curve in the dirt for ball to warming up in the bullpen for the cops is going to hobby.
- 1:25:43But you'd have to guess right now through speculation that Glenn is warming up for starting assignment later on not in this game.
- 1:25:54There's a two to pitch fouled back into the upper deck for a holding count of two balls and two strikes.
- 1:26:03Chico Fernandez warming up in the bullpen for the match he might come in the ballgame third batter up in this any now brand.
- 1:26:14Now again a two to a slider popped up in the infield Andre Rogers calling.
- 1:26:21And he makes the catch for number one.
- 1:26:28That will bring up Johnny Neil either to a force play to the shortstop his first time up Charlie batting to thirty two.
- 1:26:46And the first pitch by a bureau to Neil is high for ball one.
- 1:26:54That's have four runs on seven hits the Mets have no runs and two hits.
- 1:26:58There's a bouncy ball a short Rogers takes a half hop a tough chance fires the first base out number two.
- 1:27:04Rogers comes up throwing he's got a strong arm and he fires that ball right off the top.
- 1:27:10Two men out and Eddie Crane ball now being sent up the bat for Al Brand.
- 1:27:19And a left hand batter he's batting two or three.
- 1:27:49And with two home runs 10 runs batted in and the first pitch to Crane pool is a fastball it's right through the heart of the plate for strike one.
- 1:27:59That's the quarter tie the Cubs have two out the bottom half of the fifth and again the fastball but this one outside.
- 1:28:15One ball one strike you're back to work in the fastball filed off ball bouncing in the dirt.
- 1:28:22The camp moving along the one and two Mets have a very short road trip.
- 1:28:31They play three at Pittsburgh and four at Chicago before returning home and they open up against Pittsburgh right here.
- 1:28:38Here's the pitch back to the plate a fastball low two balls and two strikes.
- 1:28:43They play Pittsburgh a Friday afternoon day game a Saturday evening night game that's variety night and a Sunday single game.
- 1:28:53There's a high pop up back of home Dick Bortel has plenty of room and he makes the catch to retire the side.
- 1:29:04Another easy inning for Bob Buell for the second time in a row he has retired the side in order and the score at the end of five innings to play.
- 1:29:11The Cubs four the New York Mets nothing.
- 1:29:15Now let's listen to an old favorite brought up to date.
- 1:29:20Rheingold extra dry beer is the name of my beer brisk and bright refreshing brew. Rheingold flavors clean clear through. It's not sweet or bitter. That's why folks consider Rheingold is the beer to buy. Dry will tell you why.
- 1:29:45Slowly ageful flavor Rheingold's taste you'll savor. Here is beer as beer should taste. That's the reason to make haste. Next time you're out shopping in a tavern poppin why not sing out clear and high Rheingold extra dry.
- 1:30:02Why beer is Rheingold the dry beer. Think of Rheingold whenever you buy beer. It's not bitter not sweet. It's the dry flavor treat. Won't you try extra dry Rheingold beer.
- 1:30:21Five innings behind us as we move to the top of the sixth inning in the ballgame for the Mets and shortstop in place of Al Moran who was taken out for a pinch hitter is Chico Fernandez.
- 1:30:32Al Jackson on the mound for the Mets he has worked through five innings giving up four runs two of them earned allowing seven hits striking out three and walking one and now he'll oppose his opposing pitcher Bob Buell.
- 1:30:46Buell is 0 for 2 against Al.
- 1:30:50The first pitch to the right hand batter is swung on strike one that pitch in the dirt picked up by Sammy Taylor.
- 1:31:07One strike delivery again swung on this one in the strike zone.
- 1:31:12He can his own too. When he talked to Bob Buell about his 0 for 80 plus he gets a little bit indignant doesn't like to talk about it.
- 1:31:24He looks at a fastball outside one ball two strikes.
- 1:31:31The base that he got to break up the long drop was a high pop up and everybody ran after it and then everybody pulled away.
- 1:31:41Now at 1-2 Buell hits a fly ball to center field Jim Hickman glides back turns and he glugged it.
- 1:31:52So Al has one out in the top of the sixth inning he trails 4 to nothing and the batter will be Ellis Burton who had a home run in the second inning.
- 1:32:01His second of the year and that base hit by Burton at that point gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead they added two more in the fifth.
- 1:32:10Burton batting 268 he's a switch hitter batting from the right hand side against Al Jackson.
- 1:32:17And the first pitch is thrown but time was called so it does not count.
- 1:32:24Stan Landis the home plate umpire standing with both hands up and Al threw the pitch without lucky. Now time is in we'll start all over.
- 1:32:36And a curve ball is low for ball one. Mets and Cubs have played six times prior to this game and it's been a Mexican standoff both teams winning three games.
- 1:32:52Next pitch back to the plate is a called strike one ball one strike.
- 1:32:58Right here in the foreground the Cubs have been the top team they have won three of the four play the Mets have won two of the two played in Chicago.
- 1:33:08Small change up a hard swing a foul ball. Burton was not fooled in the change of pace he got a big swing on that one.
- 1:33:16One ball two strikes.
- 1:33:27One ball two strikes the on deck batter Andre Rogers.
- 1:33:32Jackson back with a slider and there's a swing and a miss for strike three and Al Jackson now has four strikeouts.
- 1:33:39He has two men out here in the sixth inning as the Cubs lead 4-0 and the batter will be Andre Rogers who has two doubles and two times up also a walk to go along.
- 1:33:50Rogers with a grounds rule double to right field his second time up and a double to right center his third he walked his first time up.
- 1:34:06And the first pitch to the right hand batter is taken for strike one.
- 1:34:12Rogers batting to 18.
- 1:34:23Jackson back high with a fastball one ball one strike.
- 1:34:32Cubs have four runs on seven hits the Mets have only two hits in the ballgame and no runs.
- 1:34:39Slow change of pace outside two balls and one strike.
- 1:34:56No action in either bullpen as Jackson comes back at 2-1 and he misses outside for ball three.
- 1:35:05Andre Rogers now checking the signs looking for the hit sign at 3-1 the on deck batter is Billy Williams.
- 1:35:13He'll be given the hit sign you got to bet on that.
- 1:35:17Two men out they want him to go all out and he takes for ball four and that puts a runner on at first base with two outs.
- 1:35:24The second walk issued by Al Jackson in the game and coming up now Bill Williams who is all for three in the game.
- 1:35:43Williams batting 3-0-7 left hand batter.
- 1:35:49He struck out his last time up there's a bouncing ball that goes off to the right side foul for strike one.
- 1:35:59Williams last year missed hitting 300 by two points he batted 298.
- 1:36:14Throw to first base but Rogers with a short lead back way ahead of the tag.
- 1:36:19Cubs four Mets nothing two outs top of the sixth.
- 1:36:24And a slow change up the Williams is popped up the shortstop Chico Fernandez has plenty of room and he makes the catch to retire the side.
- 1:36:35In the end he no runs no hits there were no mad errors one walk and one man left on and the score at the end of five and one half innings of play.
- 1:36:43Cubs four New York Mets nothing.
- 1:36:47You know the New York area has just about everything it's the most wonderful place in the world.
- 1:36:53Yes you name it and New York has got it.
- 1:36:56Parks, beaches, baseball, football, golf, lakes, amusement.
- 1:37:01People in New York have a lot to choose from and that goes for beer too.
- 1:37:06I think it's really something that of all the brands of beer available New Yorkers have made Rheingold extra dry their favorite.
- 1:37:15That's quite a tribute to the quality of Rheingold.
- 1:37:19Rheingold is brewed of the very choicest ingredients.
- 1:37:22Brewed the long slow costly way.
- 1:37:25The extra dry way.
- 1:37:27And extra dry tells you why Rheingold is so wonderful.
- 1:37:31So much more refreshing.
- 1:37:33It's beer as beer should taste.
- 1:37:36Frisk and bright and clean clear through.
- 1:37:39Why not enjoy the extra refreshment of Rheingold extra dry beer.
- 1:37:44Join all the millions who say my beer it's Rheingold the dry beer.
- 1:37:51All set to go here and we'll pause for a second for station identification.
- 1:37:56Take 10 in your dial WG Weiss connected at the time 332 our temperature stands right now at 89 degrees.
- 1:38:07Ralph Keiner along with Lindsay Nelson and Bob Murphy from the foreground.
- 1:38:11The Mets coming to bat they need four to tie.
- 1:38:13They are setting up Cliff Cook to bat for Al Jackson.
- 1:38:16Larry Bernard warming up in the bullpen for the Mets.
- 1:38:19It'll be Cliff Cook, Jim Hickman and Ron Hunt against Bob Buell.
- 1:38:23First pitch is a slider and Cook was way out in front as he swings and misses for strike one.
- 1:38:28Cliff batting 151 he has two home runs and eight runs batted in.
- 1:38:36Buell back and this time he misses with a slider one ball one strike.
- 1:38:49And now Buell with another pitch the ball hit down the short a backhand stab by the shortstop Rogers.
- 1:38:54He comes up throwing and gets his man.
- 1:38:57That was one of those now you see it now you don't plays.
- 1:39:01Rogers went over in the hole he had a half hop to pick up he kind of swiped at it and came up with it backhanded one handed.
- 1:39:09And then threw to first base for the out.
- 1:39:12And now one of the cup players in the dugout Don Landrum giving the sign as though he were a bullfighter because that's just about the way that Rogers played the ball.
- 1:39:23It was a swing and a pass like a bullfighter passing a cow or I should say a bull on by.
- 1:39:28It could have been a cow the way he played it.
- 1:39:31Here's the first pitch now to Jim Hickman it's outside for ball one.
- 1:39:34Buell comes back and misses again for ball two.
- 1:39:41Well that play you can't play any other way it was either do or die and Andre Rogers did it.
- 1:39:53Now the pitch to Hickman fouled off.
- 1:39:58The count is one ball and two strikes correction on that make it two balls and one strike.
- 1:40:15Hickman back to work with a new ball and there is a check on the swing but not in time he went too far to and to.
- 1:40:30And Hickman looks at another pitch for a called strike three that is the first strikeout by Bob Buell in the game.
- 1:40:37He has given up only two hits the Cubs lead four to nothing.
- 1:40:40Now with two out he'll pitch to Ron Hunt.
- 1:40:44He's now for two he has grounded out the short and quite out the center field.
- 1:40:47He's now batting 266.
- 1:41:01Bottom half of the sixth inning two men out the batter Ron Hunt the on deck man is Duke Snyder.
- 1:41:09And Buell misses low outside with his first pitch for ball one.
- 1:41:17Buell is making his second appearance against the Mets he lost his first time out two to nothing.
- 1:41:23There's a fly ball hit the Shal left field charging his Billy Williams he has to hurry he can't get to it.
- 1:41:29The ball drops in and Ron Hunt has a base hit the third base hit off Bob Buell that'll bring up Duke Snyder.
- 1:41:44Duke has hit the ball exceptionally well but he has no hits he was robbed with a brilliant catch by Burton in right field his first time up one of the best catches you'll ever see.
- 1:41:56He's now batting five out the deep center field a second time up the ball caught four hundred and forty feet away and the first pitch to Duke is taking a called strike Bob Buell with a change of pace.
- 1:42:10Matter batting 223 with 12 home runs 27 runs batted in Mets now with a chance to get back in the ballgame they need four to tie one strike pitch outside and the can now even at one ball one strike.
- 1:42:25Buell now back to Snyder there's a high pop up down the third base side a tough chance for Sando.
- 1:42:40He's going way back in the well and he can't get to it.
- 1:42:48Now moves up the one and two returning back to first base after moving all the way to third is Ron Hunt.
- 1:43:07They said by Ron Hunt here in this setting the first hit off Bob Buell since the Mets picked up their only other two hits in the second inning.
- 1:43:19That's seven basis to go with their four run.
- 1:43:23There's the one to deliver to Duke and it's bowed down in the dirt.
- 1:43:34Yeah I'm Jack batter Frank Thomas picking the ball up and throwing it back to the umpire Sam Landis one ball two strikes two men out.
- 1:43:44You know that comes back with a fastball it's hard down the first high hop over the top of Leo Burkett.
- 1:44:06That was a hard ground ball down the first base and at the last moment the ball took a high hop and bounded over the top of the glove of Leo Burkett first base.
- 1:44:33All that went on out off of the wall played there by Burton and scoring from first base on the two base hit by Duke Snyder was Ron Hunt the score now four to one in favor of the Cubs and the batters Frank Thomas and his first pitch.
- 1:44:47That's a left field it's got to go. It's long gone a home run.
- 1:45:16Frank Thomas with a long home run that went over the roof right down the left field line and the Mets are back in the ball game the score of four to three in favor of the Cubs and warming up in the bullpen for the Cubs as John Elston out to the mound now as Bob Kennedy the acting manager of the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:45:44Well the Mets are bouncing back on some fine hitting by Duke Snyder and Frank Thomas say you know why I rang gold tastes so good while dry tells you why it tells you that right.
- 1:45:58The Mets are playing gold extra dry and throw the long ball cost their way for a flavor that's risk and right and clean clear through. Enjoy some Bob Kennedy now back to the dugout Bob Buell still in the ballgame the Mets have scored three in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
- 1:46:17The first five run comes to the plate at Sammy Taylor. Two men out and the first pitch to Taylor is fouled out in the dirt for strike one.
- 1:46:29Home run by Frank Thomas is fifth this year and he has driven in now twenty two runs.
- 1:46:41The strike delivery by Buell to Taylor is outside a fastball one ball one strike and Taylor takes outside again two balls and one strike.
- 1:47:01The destroyer with Don Elston in the bullpen is Jack Warner to right hander.
- 1:47:09The Mets exporting for three runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning with two men out now have moved up to where they're only one run behind.
- 1:47:21Back to Taylor outside ball three three balls and one strike beyond deck battered Jim Harkness.
- 1:47:40Here's a three one delivery fastball deep the right field way back there is Burton but he has room and he makes the guess. All God right in front of the bullpen about four hundred and twenty feet away and that retires the side.
- 1:47:56In the end he's all the Mets score three runs on three base it ever nowhere and no one left on the Mets now taking a field get a fine hand but the score in favor the Cubs now by only one run they lead four to three.
- 1:48:16Well even though there's a lot of variety out here at the Polar Grounds just about every game is played the Mets have scheduled a special variety night and it's also date night on Saturday night July 6.
- 1:48:29Saturday night the first night game scheduled on Saturday this year there'll be plenty of entertainment it'll start at six thirty you'll see Chubby Checker DD Sharp the Earl they'll be out here to entertain and the good guys from W.A.B.C.
- 1:48:43Sam Holman Dan Ingram Charlie Greer Herb Oscar Anderson Scott Muni Bob Dayton Bruce Morrill and Bob Lewis they'll all be here to entertain you Friday night Saturday night July the 6th.
- 1:48:59Oh that sounds like a real big night and on that night and that will be playing the Pittsburgh Pirates they return home from their very brief road trip Friday afternoon July 5.
- 1:49:13They'll play an afternoon game game time at two o'clock by Saturday night July 6 game time at eight o'clock and they'll play a single game on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:49:26Right after that the All-Star break and then the big series with the Los Angeles Dodgers starting July 10 the night game that is not on your schedule that game a make up game from a rain out and I game July 11 with the Dodgers and I game July 12 with the Dodgers and a ladies day game July 13 with the Dodgers.
- 1:49:48Better make your reservations early. Now we have Larry Bernard in the ballgame for the Mets Al Jackson going out out at the total of six innings gave up four runs two of them earned.
- 1:49:59He allowed seven it struck out for and walked to but I thought the record of two wins and two losses he worked last night worked one inning in perfect style.
- 1:50:08His first man will be Ron Sando and the first pitch is a called strike.
- 1:50:21Bernard back with an overhand curveball there's a deep fly ball to right center field coming over to center and he makes the catch.
- 1:50:34Well Ron Sando is out. He has one hit and four trips up. He has hit in six consecutive games now for the Cubs and with a score of four to three in favor of Chicago the batter will be Leo Burke.
- 1:50:47They are right hand batter with one hit and three times up.
- 1:50:58And the first pitch to Burke is over a called strike. All told the right hand are now throwing for the Cubs in the bullpen.
- 1:51:09Bernard back and inside one ball one strike.
- 1:51:20This is Larry's twenty third appearance.
- 1:51:24And an overhand curve is fouled down in the dirt one ball two strikes.
- 1:51:30Larry has not started a game this year all twenty three of his appearances in relief.
- 1:51:45One ball two strikes but I'm back with a fastball and it's fouled off of the hands out of play.
- 1:51:58The twenty three appearances by Larry Bernard ties Mackenzie for the most appearances so far this year by a Met player.
- 1:52:06Mackenzie also picking up his appearances in relief and now a curve ball has looked at a called strike three.
- 1:52:20Leo Burke made a gesture and dropped the bat with just a little bit of elevation on it and I think he's been ejected from the ball game.
- 1:52:28Boy he just was out of there in a hurry and now Bob Kennedy is up arguing about the fact that Leo Burke has been ejected.
- 1:52:50I don't know if you're a Met fan but that might be a bad break because Ernie Banks is sitting on the bench and he might be coming in.
- 1:52:59Ernie having a good home run here for the Chicago Cubs he has hit fifteen home runs Burke has so far this year hit only one.
- 1:53:09Now Ernie Banks coming in from the bullpen and he's on the bench and he'll be in the ball game.
- 1:53:14Leo Burke has been ejected. I wonder what side the umpire is on.
- 1:53:21That's the worst sort of break you can get believe me.
- 1:53:25Now Burke going out to center field to the clubhouse and as he moves on by the umpire Stan Landon he has a couple more words to say.
- 1:53:34He also stops the chat with third base umpire Tim Gorman.
- 1:53:40Cubs lead four to three plenty of excitement left. Two men out here in the top of the seventh.
- 1:53:45The batter coming in now is Kenny Hubs.
- 1:54:02Hubs is all for three. Here's Larry Bernard with his first pitch to the right hand batter.
- 1:54:06Slider hit down to the shortstop Chico Fernandez. He comes up throwing and gets his man.
- 1:54:14So the Mets bounce right back in this game. They trail by only one now and in the top of the seventh inning for the Cubs no runs no hits.
- 1:54:22There were no med errors and no one left on. And the score after six and one half innings to play the Cubs four the New York Mets three.
- 1:54:30Well here it is the seventh inning stretch. You know what that calls for Lindsey? Yes sir I'll turn to do that.
- 1:54:37Calls for fine cold Rheingold. Rheingold extra dry beer.
- 1:54:41And really Lindsey you know anytime any nice time calls for Rheingold.
- 1:54:46Makes any wonderful day just a little bit more wonderful. But then that figures.
- 1:54:50Because Rheingold is the dry beer. Yes two little words extra dry tell you why Rheingold is the happy choice of millions.
- 1:54:59Extra dry tells you Rheingold is brewed along slow cost of your way to taste.
- 1:55:04Frisk and bright and clean clear through. Rheingold is beer as beer should taste.
- 1:55:09That's why millions say my beer is Rheingold the dry beer. So why not join them.
- 1:55:15Enjoy a tall refreshing glass of Rheingold as we bring you more of the baseball action.
- 1:55:20We have changes on the field and to tell you all about them here's Ralph Kinnick.
- 1:55:24Well you know Lindsey a little more truth and poetry on a day like this about them Rheingold.
- 1:55:31Temperature out here 94 degrees. It's real Rheingold weather.
- 1:55:36Now coming in the ballgame for the Chicago Cubs in place Bob Buell as Don Elston.
- 1:55:42Buell going out to the clubhouse and center field. He has worked six innings and right now he's the pitcher record on the winning side.
- 1:55:51Bob has given up three runs while allowing five hits. He struck out one and walked one in his six inning tenure.
- 1:56:00Ernie Banks in the game in place of Leo Burke who was ejected from the game Ernie playing at first base.
- 1:56:08For the Mets it will be Tim Harkness, Charlie Neal and Chico Fernandez against the right hander Don Elston.
- 1:56:16This is Don's 25th appearance. He has appeared in all of his games in relief his record three and one.
- 1:56:37In the batting order Ernie Banks will bat in the ninth position. Elston will bat in the fifth position.
- 1:56:43That way Bob Kennedy will be able to use Banks as the third hitter in the inning coming up in the eighth.
- 1:56:49Right now we're all set to go as Don Elston throws his first pitch to Tim Harkness that's inside for ball one.
- 1:57:03Elston now back to the play with a change up. It's fall down to first base but foul.
- 1:57:07Ernie Banks comes up with the ball moves toward first but first base umpire Ed Sudol gave the signal it was foul.
- 1:57:14One ball one strike.
- 1:57:31One ball one strike. Don Elston in place of Bob Buell.
- 1:57:37And a change up is high for ball two. In the ball pen for the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:57:45Jack Warner warming up. He's been throwing for quite some time and Dick LeMay also throwing.
- 1:57:51LeMay a left hander, Warner a right hander. For the Mets Tracy Stallard throwing.
- 1:57:57Now the 2-1 pitch hit the left field. Kelly Williams puts the glasses down, moves to his left, halts and makes the catch.
- 1:58:10And with one out the batter will be Charlie Neal.
- 1:58:16Charlie is all for two in the game.
- 1:58:23He hit into a fourth play in the second inning then grounded out the short in the fifth.
- 1:58:29Charlie a right hand batter batting 2-31. Mets trail by one run and the first pitch is hit to left field high in the air.
- 1:58:38Williams moving over back of the facade and he makes the catch and just caught the ball before he lost it in the sun.
- 1:58:45Williams losing the ball in the sun and at the last minute he caught the ball as he fell away from it.
- 1:58:51And he caught it by the wall. That ball couldn't have missed the facade of the upper deck by more than just a fraction of an inch or two.
- 1:58:59Charlie Neal just missing a home run.
- 1:59:03Now the batter will be Chico Fernandez batting for the first time. Chico batting 2-11 in the ball game in place of Al Moran.
- 1:59:09He has one home run and five runs batted in.
- 1:59:18Cubs have four runs on seven hits. The Mets have three runs and five hits.
- 1:59:29And the first pitch to Chico is a called strike in the outside corner.
- 1:59:40Payed attendance right here today 8,183. There's a curve in the dirt that gets by the catcher. One ball, one strike.
- 1:59:49Along with the service and working press of 889 and 9,000 midget Mets, the total attendance 18,072.
- 2:00:02And the pitch back to Fernandez swung on a miss for strike two.
- 2:00:11Mets now have drawn a total of 543,064 paid here in the ballpark in 33 openings.
- 2:00:24One ball, two strikes. Don Elston and Chico Fernandez and a fastball is looked at called strike three to retire the side.
- 2:00:32So Don Elston in his first inning works perfectly. One, two, three. And the score at the end of seven innings of play.
- 2:00:38The Cubs four, the New York Mets three.
- 2:00:42This is the only game being played in the daylight. All the other games in the Major League scheduled at night.
- 2:00:49Philadelphia will play Pittsburgh in a night game and Pittsburgh will open up here in the Polar Grounds when the Mets return home from the very brief road trip.
- 2:00:57Mets will play Philadelphia on July 5th, a day game. That's Friday afternoon, game time at two o'clock.
- 2:01:04Philadelphia I should say Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh will be here on Friday, July 5th. Saturday night, July 6th.
- 2:01:12And they'll play a single game on Sunday, July 7th.
- 2:01:15San Francisco scheduled at St. Louis, Los Angeles at Cincinnati, Houston at Milwaukee to complete the National League schedule.
- 2:01:22In the American League the Yankees play the Chicago White Sox in the night game, Cleveland at Boston, Washington at Kansas City, Detroit at Minnesota,
- 2:01:30and Baltimore will play a Twy Niner at Los Angeles. That's the National League and American League schedule.
- 2:01:38Don't forget that tickets are available for all our games at three convenient locations, downtown at Pennsylvania Station and Grand Central Station.
- 2:01:46Also at the advanced reservation window here at the Polar Grounds, that window opens seven days a week.
- 2:01:51And ticket reservations may be made at any of the Howard clothing stores in the New York area.
- 2:01:57Well we've had seven innings of exciting baseball and now as we move to the top of the eighth, once again Lindsay Nelson.
- 2:02:04Thank you very much Ralph Kiner and it's going to be Dick Bertell up to lead all four of the Chicago Cubs facing Larry Benarth,
- 2:02:11who came on in relief of Al Jackson after Al had worked six innings in which he allowed four runs on seven hits.
- 2:02:18So I've got four and walk two.
- 2:02:21Bertell is a right-hand batter. He is two for three in this ball game this afternoon.
- 2:02:30Larry Benarth into the motion and the pitch is in there for a called strike.
- 2:02:35Ralph Kiner told you that Charlie Neal missed a home run by inches with a high fly ball to the left that Billy Williams actually lost in the sun at the last moment.
- 2:02:45Pitch to Bertell and he tries to bun it, calls it off instead.
- 2:02:50Two strike count. When Williams came in, both Tom Gorman and Stan Landis, the umpire is working today,
- 2:02:57and Billy Williams to ask him about that and Williams indicated to him that as it came down he lost it in the sun.
- 2:03:04And he also indicated, kindly tell him that it missed just by inches of hitting the overhanging upper deck and if it does touch it's a home run.
- 2:03:13Here's a swing and a gone ball to three. Charlie Neal on a big hop up with it, plays it on across over the heart and it's in time and he's out.
- 2:03:22One away and Nelson Matthews is coming up. He's a center fielder. He's been up three times today without a hit.
- 2:03:27The Cubs are leading here by a score of four to three.
- 2:03:39Nelson Matthews, a young man who broke in last September with a grand slam home run at that time on behalf of the Cubs.
- 2:03:45This year he had four homers and ten runs right of down. Here's a swing and a high pop to the right side. Second baseman Ron Hutt is waiting.
- 2:03:54He makes the cut. He was shading his eyes from the sun. With the gloves on, two away, Ernie Banks coming up. Banks batting number nine.
- 2:04:03And here's Coach Bob Kennedy's batting order.
- 2:04:06This is the first time up for Banks. He is batting through 42 with 15 homers and 42 runs batted in.
- 2:04:15Benares works the pitch. A little number back to the mound off the end of the bat. It's taken by Benares. He lobs over to Harkness.
- 2:04:32And Benares again as he ties the side in order. In the top of the eighth, the Cubs got no runs on no hitters and none left.
- 2:04:39The end of seven and a half innings, it's the Cubs four, the Mets three. And now a word from Cool Cigarettes.
- 2:04:48If your cigarette tastes hot, if your cigarette tastes dry, you're not smoking cool enough. And here is the reason why.
- 2:05:00Your cigarette's not tasting cool enough, unless you're smoking cool. You're not smoking cool enough, till you come up too cool.
- 2:05:11Cool's mental magic brightens taste, refreshing all day through. Feel extra coolness in your throat, as cool comes through for you.
- 2:05:22You're not smoking cool enough, till you come up too cool.
- 2:05:37Enjoy the extra coolness you feel in your throat when you smoke cool. Enjoy that bright, clear taste all day long.
- 2:05:45Come up too cool with the Pure White Filter, or cool without filter.
- 2:05:53Going to the bottom of the eighth, the Mets still trail by one run. So manager Casey Singel is making a move.
- 2:05:59He is sending up Choo Choo Coleman to bat for Larry Benares.
- 2:06:03Man working in the bullpen right now is Tracy Stallard.
- 2:06:06As Casey's got to go to the bench, try to get a little punch here to get something started, because the Mets still trail by one.
- 2:06:12It's been spectacular and relief. He has faced only six men and he has retired the sixth in a row.
- 2:06:19But he is out of the ballgame now and Choo Choo Coleman is the batter.
- 2:06:25Don Elston with the pitch and it's outside to Chooch for a ball one.
- 2:06:33The crowd is trying to lend a little support with a chant of, Let's Go Mets.
- 2:06:39Don Elston working in relief for Bob Buell.
- 2:06:44It's just by and high for the ball. It's 2-0. Buell worked six innings, which he allowed three runs on five hits.
- 2:06:50He struck out one and he walked one.
- 2:06:57Jim Hickman is on deck for the Mets.
- 2:07:00Here's Elston's 2-0 offering. That ball is going away for the ball and it's 3-0.
- 2:07:07Coleman looks down now to Cookie Lavagetto, the coach at theory base.
- 2:07:13Define that, find out what he does on 3-0.
- 2:07:18And the pitch is in there for a call start. He was taking all the way at 3-1.
- 2:07:27Coleman again looks down. Get his time from Lavagetto.
- 2:07:37Elston starts the motion.
- 2:07:40Playing a ground ball foul down past Palihanos, the coach at first.
- 2:07:44It's a full count now to Choo Choo Coleman with the Mets batting in the bottom half of the eighth inning.
- 2:07:56After having been four runs back, the Mets came on to get three in the bottom of the sixth to get right back in the ballgame.
- 2:08:03Here is a playoff pitch. It is tightly locked in for ball four.
- 2:08:12Bob Buell walked only one during his time in the ballgame and this is the first walk issued by Don Elston.
- 2:08:19Jim Hickman is coming up and our any backs comes over to check with Elston.
- 2:08:23Taking over to Ron Santo as the Cubs must protect against the possibility of a sacrifice in this situation.
- 2:08:29The Mets are only one run back. Jim Hickman looking down to cookie Lavagetto.
- 2:08:35Coleman on the bases at good speed.
- 2:08:45Hickman settles himself into the batter's box.
- 2:08:51Elston comes back, here's the pitch and it's in there for a call strike.
- 2:08:55He was not square at the butt. At first base Ernie Bikes was charging defensively.
- 2:09:08Hickman looks down to cookie again.
- 2:09:16Coleman takes his lead at first base. It's a pitch out. Jim Hickman was square at the butt.
- 2:09:24And a pitch out. It's one and one.
- 2:09:38Elston is up and set. Steps off the rubber. Ernie Bikes has moved a couple of steps in.
- 2:09:47Coleman has taken a lead. Elston starts all over. He's up and set.
- 2:09:54Goes over, not in time as 2-2 Coleman gets back safely.
- 2:09:59The count to Hickman at the plate is one ball and one strike.
- 2:10:07Lavagetto is looking into the dugout to get Casey Singelstein.
- 2:10:12Now he has it and he's relaying it on to Jim Hickman.
- 2:10:27And the pitch. It's low for ball. He was not square at the butt.
- 2:10:32And here's a throw to first and Coleman is back safely, plotting it on a close play.
- 2:10:37And right now we call for station identification.
- 2:10:41Eight 10 inches out, WG Wise connected A New York. Now four minutes past four o'clock.
- 2:10:46Our temperature 89 degrees.
- 2:10:54This is Lindsey Nelson with Ralph Kiner and Bob Murphy at the Polo Grounds in New York.
- 2:10:592-2 Coleman almost hung up down at first. Had to slide back in. Hickman waits for the 2-1 pitch.
- 2:11:04Coleman's running here just swinging a foul ball back and not a play. Runs the count to 2-2.
- 2:11:18And 2-2 Coleman moving on the pitch.
- 2:11:30The official temperature is now 95 degrees in New York.
- 2:11:36He's running again here to swing a foul ball. He dug off a couple of steps and then held up actually.
- 2:11:42He dug off the start as Hickman drilled a foul on the ground down past if you'll allow the coach to steer.
- 2:11:492-2 the count to Jim Hickman. Nobody out.
- 2:12:00Coleman takes his lead, Banks holding him on.
- 2:12:05Breaking ball, come on and popped up to the right side. Ernie Banks sealed the bag weight.
- 2:12:09Nice to catch. Coleman standing on the bag at first base. So Hickman has popped out.
- 2:12:16That brings up Ron Hutz, one man out in the run at first. The Cubs leading here by a score of 4-3.
- 2:12:30Ron Hutz, single down the bottom of the sixth and scored the first net run of the day.
- 2:12:42With the night out of the long game, Tracy Stallard continues to throw in the net both ends.
- 2:12:52First pitch out. Ball on to Ron Hutz. Nothing was on.
- 2:13:01I was thinking that Tracy Dess might be playing hit and run on the first pitch.
- 2:13:08That's looking down to allow the gutter.
- 2:13:15The Cubs are waiting. Coleman leads.
- 2:13:22That pitch is in there for a call strike. Coleman again is left to charge.
- 2:13:25Does hook up the steps and held up.
- 2:13:28One and one to Ron Hutz.
- 2:13:37The Cubs four and the Mets three.
- 2:13:40Trying to push through to Coleman long here in the bottom half of the eighth inning.
- 2:13:50Jendon Elston with the pitch. It's outside for ball and it's two and one.
- 2:14:00Duke Snyder is kneeling on deck for the Mets.
- 2:14:13That's getting settled back in the batter's box.
- 2:14:26Coleman leads off the bag at first.
- 2:14:30Here's a throw over. Coleman gets back to the base.
- 2:14:32The only backspin in the bag there.
- 2:14:53Come on, that comes back in.
- 2:15:01That pitch misses outside. Three balls, one strike now.
- 2:15:15That's a nice one.
- 2:15:27Jendon Elston has the sign. Coleman leads.
- 2:15:32Coleman's running in here to swing the foul ball back in out of play.
- 2:15:35Playing hit and run on the three-one pitch.
- 2:15:37The bank shoots you back.
- 2:15:45That's a nice one. That's a nice one.
- 2:16:08Throw over to first, a leisurely toss, not in time.
- 2:16:28Jendon Elston sets the work.
- 2:16:32Throw's over. Coleman gets back safely.
- 2:16:35Trying to keep a short hold on Coleman, figuring that he might be running on the three-two pitch one man out.
- 2:16:41Out of the three-two pitch and it's a swinging and a foul tip back into the global brace.
- 2:16:45At least one time.
- 2:16:47Ron Hutt is a strikeout victim two away and Duke Snyder's coming up.
- 2:16:59Bob Kennedy has come out of the dugout and is coming out to the mound now.
- 2:17:05He has got left-hander Dick LeMay warming up out there.
- 2:17:09Recently recalled from Atlanta.
- 2:17:14And Kennedy is going to make a pitching change here of some kind.
- 2:17:20There's to be a right-hander who's bringing in here.
- 2:17:23LeMay remains in the bullpen and it's Lindy McDonough who is walking it.
- 2:17:32The Cubs are leading by a score of four to three.
- 2:17:40As two-two Coleman was moved from first to second on the bat.
- 2:17:49Now they're leaning on the bat outside the batting box as Lindy McDonough warms up.
- 2:18:06McDonough and Mary Jackson came to the Tidewell Cubs from the St. Louis Tidenote.
- 2:18:11In exchange for George Altman and Don Tidewell and then Tidewell and Enfield and Julio Gochao
- 2:18:17promptly traded over to the Pittsburgh Pirates and exchanged the dugout big growth.
- 2:18:21McDonough is making his twenty-third appearance out of this season.
- 2:18:25And in relief he has a record of four victories and two losses.
- 2:18:29One time out he takes one inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates which he allowed no runs on no hits.
- 2:18:38Duke Snyder, a left-hand batter, giving in.
- 2:18:47So for the Mets it's up to the Dukes.
- 2:18:52That's Richard's outside for a ball.
- 2:18:55By the double, the driver and the first-net gun, and the bottom-hander, the first inning.
- 2:19:01The slam won by Leo Burke, first baseman.
- 2:19:04Hard smash, long ball. That continued on down to the right field corner.
- 2:19:09And now it's the fourth and first base.
- 2:19:14Daniel is set. Coleman leads it second.
- 2:19:17Takes his local ball. It's two and one out of Snyder.
- 2:19:27Mike Thomas is waiting on Degs for the Mets.
- 2:19:30And Olmend, the bottom-half of the sixth inning.
- 2:19:35Seventy-cent's going around toward right on left-hand batter Duke Snyder.
- 2:19:39Here's a fish missing outside. It is now three balls and no strikes.
- 2:19:44To Snyder.
- 2:19:53Duke back in and waiting.
- 2:19:56And then takes his lead at second base.
- 2:20:00This is a 3-0 fish.
- 2:20:03It's outside and Snyder has gone off with Mike Thomas coming up now.
- 2:20:10McDaniel is working very carefully with Duke Snyder.
- 2:20:16Mike Thomas is first now and Coleman is second with Thomas coming around to step in.
- 2:20:27That's only the third walk that the Mets have drawn today.
- 2:20:30Buell walked one, Elston walked one, now McDaniel has walked one.
- 2:20:40Thomas is single, slide to left and Homer's.
- 2:20:47McDaniel is set.
- 2:20:51It's one-on in this. Thomas trying to hold up but it goes inside wide.
- 2:21:01Choo-choo Coleman, the base runner at second, Duke Snyder the base runner at first.
- 2:21:13McDaniel leans way over to get a sign this time.
- 2:21:19Runners leading first and second.
- 2:21:23Choo-choo Coleman coming home.
- 2:21:31It's 5-4-4.
- 2:21:44Mike Thomas with his third base here this afternoon as George Coleman from second.
- 2:21:48Snyder holding at second and Thomas is on it first with a run batted in.
- 2:21:52And Sammy Taylor is coming up.
- 2:21:55That run is charged against Don Elston.
- 2:22:05So now the Mets have runners at first and second still.
- 2:22:08Two men out and Sammy Taylor is the batter.
- 2:22:16Runners lead again at first and second.
- 2:22:20It's just low for ball one to Sammy Taylor.
- 2:22:28Sammy has nothing for three today.
- 2:22:31Although in the sixth inning he feed off on one to deep right field.
- 2:22:36Out in the bullpen area where the catch was made by Ellis Burton.
- 2:22:43Inside the Cubs four to the Mets four.
- 2:22:51It's just low for ball.
- 2:23:03The big batter hanging over the upper deck.
- 2:23:06The Cubs die.
- 2:23:11Here's a 2-0 pitch.
- 2:23:13A little number off the plate to the right side of foul ball.
- 2:23:16It's out of play.
- 2:23:19And there's a little, actually a teddy bear that is being used to simulate a Cub hanging now over the batter.
- 2:23:31I tell you the Mets fans are coming well equipped these days.
- 2:23:38They're cheating somebody's teddy bear gone out to the ballpark for the afternoon.
- 2:23:44Two and one is the count.
- 2:23:46But Sam Taylor is the plate.
- 2:23:53Lindy McDaniel is set.
- 2:23:54Checks the runners.
- 2:23:55Here's the pitch.
- 2:23:56Flung on and missed.
- 2:23:57All the way around.
- 2:23:58It's 2-2.
- 2:23:59The batter is out of the box.
- 2:24:15Now settles himself back in.
- 2:24:24Runners lead.
- 2:24:262-2 pitch.
- 2:24:28And foul ball.
- 2:24:29You've got a little piece of it to stay alive.
- 2:24:44Gifts the Mets.
- 2:24:46Thanks for another run here.
- 2:24:47Lara Benares will be the benefactor.
- 2:24:58McDaniel with the 2-2 pitch.
- 2:25:01Flung on and missed.
- 2:25:02Strike three.
- 2:25:03Struck him out.
- 2:25:04So Taylor is out swinging.
- 2:25:05And the side is retired.
- 2:25:06And the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:25:07The Mets got one run on one hit.
- 2:25:08No errors and two left.
- 2:25:09And at the end of eighth it is the Cubs four.
- 2:25:10We have a lot of big days and nights coming up at the Polo ground.
- 2:25:26And after the All-Star break the Los Angeles Dodgers will be coming in.
- 2:25:31They'll be on Wednesday night, July 10th.
- 2:25:33And we call that day to your particular attention because that is a make-up game.
- 2:25:37It was not on the original schedule.
- 2:25:41It's the make-up of a game that was rained out earlier this season.
- 2:25:45So on Wednesday night, July 10th, the Dodgers.
- 2:25:47On Thursday night, July 11th, the Dodgers.
- 2:25:49On Friday night, July 12th, the Dodgers.
- 2:25:52And on Saturday afternoon, July 13th, the Dodgers again.
- 2:25:55And that will be ladies' day and it will also be family day.
- 2:26:01And we'll have a two-inning father and son game on family day.
- 2:26:05And we'll be competing the regular schedule game.
- 2:26:09The youngsters will be playing their dads will be wearing med uniforms
- 2:26:12with the same number as their dads.
- 2:26:14Taking five will be Reggie Jackson.
- 2:26:17You remember Reggie last year.
- 2:26:19He was one of the big stars of the ball game, Al Jackson's son.
- 2:26:22Mike and Peter Thomas will be on end.
- 2:26:25Devin and Kurt Schneider.
- 2:26:27Mike and Scott Keiner.
- 2:26:28Brian Murphy.
- 2:26:30Richie Willie.
- 2:26:31Wes Hook.
- 2:26:32Many others.
- 2:26:34I would advise you to get tickets early for that series.
- 2:26:37The Met ticket office is open now, of course.
- 2:26:40The ticket office here at the Polo Grounds on the 8th Avenue side,
- 2:26:43please note, is open seven days a week.
- 2:26:46Open six days a week.
- 2:26:48The Met ticket offices at Grand Central Station and Pennsylvania Station.
- 2:26:51At Pennsylvania Station, the Met ticket office is in the Long Island waiting room
- 2:26:55and at Grand Central at the foot of the Vanderval Avenue ramp.
- 2:26:58You can order tickets by mail.
- 2:27:00The address is Ticket Manager Polo Grounds, New York, 39 New York.
- 2:27:03Or you can make ticket reservations at any of the Howard Polo stores in the greater New York area.
- 2:27:10Tracy Stalart is coming to the ball again now to pitch for the New York Met.
- 2:27:15Stalart will be committed on the field at the end of the game.
- 2:27:20One for the players and three for the ball players.
- 2:27:24Stalart is making his 19th appearance of this season.
- 2:27:30He has not been in a relief appearance since the 26th day of May at St. Louis
- 2:27:36when he worked his third of an inning and allowed no runs on no hits.
- 2:27:40Since then, Stalart has been a starter and he has reckoned for the season three victories and four losses.
- 2:27:46But he's back in relief here as the Mets tied it up 4-4.
- 2:27:50Here is the pitch to Ellis Burton.
- 2:27:52It is low for ball. Burton, the switch, is around batting left again now
- 2:27:55with the right-hander in there for the Mets.
- 2:27:58They see again, works the pitch and it's inside.
- 2:28:13A little low and it's 2-0.
- 2:28:18Carl Willie was sent down to the bullpen area.
- 2:28:21He is not throwing but he is down there.
- 2:28:26As the Mets score the run in the bottom of the eighth to full even.
- 2:28:29The Cubs led 4-0 in this ball game at one point.
- 2:28:35The pitch is low and it's not the three balls and no strikes.
- 2:28:44To Ellis Burton batting here in the top half of the ninth.
- 2:28:53They're holding the defense over toward right.
- 2:28:57That's tied away, ball four and Ellis Burton has been walked on to open up the top of the ninth for the Cubs.
- 2:29:06And that will bring up Andre Rogers.
- 2:29:09The Mets move over to have a word with Stalart as they must now prepare to play.
- 2:29:16The possibility of the bat here.
- 2:29:19Carl Willie is now up and throwing in the Met bullpen along with Ken McKenzie.
- 2:29:30Stacey Stalart massages the baseball a little bit.
- 2:29:35Rogers bats number two in the Cub batting order.
- 2:29:39Charlie Neal is on the edge of the grass at third.
- 2:29:41Burton moves off now.
- 2:29:42Here's the pitch.
- 2:29:43Rogers bumps it down the first-place line.
- 2:29:45Taken by Harkness, he plays the hut covering it first in time.
- 2:29:49The toucher fight has been executed by Rogers and the play goes three to four if you're scoring, moving Ellis Burton to second base.
- 2:29:58Now Billy Williams is coming up.
- 2:30:00Nothing for four today.
- 2:30:03Sammy Taylor out checking with Tracy Stalart.
- 2:30:23That's four on the Cubs' four.
- 2:30:34Stalart is up and set.
- 2:30:37Pitch is way on the way. It rolls away from Taylor. He recovers. There's no advance by Ellis Burton at second.
- 2:31:00Williams at the plate has an up-to-the-minute batting average of three oh six.
- 2:31:12Stalart's pitch, fastball low, and it's two and oh now to Williams.
- 2:31:38Stalart's getting his sign again.
- 2:31:50Here's the pitch.
- 2:31:51Come on in as the fly ball leaps to center. Jim Hickman ranging back. He's there now. Burton is tagged at second.
- 2:31:58Hickman makes the catch and Burton tags and moves on to third.
- 2:32:02Two men out.
- 2:32:04That will bring up clean up out of Ron Santo.
- 2:32:09One for four.
- 2:32:15Following Santo in the cup batting order, here's the pitcher.
- 2:32:19You'll recall that Ernie Banks bats ninth in the batting order.
- 2:32:24Lindy McDaniel is two up next.
- 2:32:34Manager Casey Singel now is coming out to the mound.
- 2:32:39Tammy Taylor starts walking out toward the mound. Time is gone.
- 2:32:46The old professor with his lineup cards in his hand.
- 2:32:53He has Willie and McKenzie in the bullpen.
- 2:32:58You want to talk to Taylor and Stalart.
- 2:33:18Now Stan Landis moves out to join the conference. Casey Singel is leaving Stalart in the ballgame and safe.
- 2:33:25Right now why not open up or order up a cold glass of Rhine Gold Extra Dry. It's beer as beer should taste.
- 2:33:32As Casey heads back for the dugout in order to allow our stations to identify themselves, we fought for station identification.
- 2:33:41This is WGY Schenectady 810 on your dial. The time is now 28 minutes past 4 p.m.
- 2:33:51With Ralph Cannon and Bob Murphy and now Ron Santo is going to be intentionally walked I believe.
- 2:33:57The result of the conference with pitcher Lindy McDaniel drew up next.
- 2:34:03Ellis Burton had third base.
- 2:34:08Now Sammy Taylor apparently is not sure. He had pointed on the first now he looks into the dugout.
- 2:34:14And now he is going to be intentionally walked.
- 2:34:17As ball one outside, Ron Santo is being intentionally walked with the pitcher Lindy McDaniel drew up here next.
- 2:34:25So let's see what kind of a move Ed George Bob Kennedy will make.
- 2:34:33As ball three outside, Merritt Renew is coming in from the bullpen area. He's left hand battered.
- 2:34:40Now as ball four outside, so Santo goes to first base.
- 2:34:44He is not the man they're worried about. They're worried about Ellis Burton who's over there on third with two men out.
- 2:34:50Lindy McDaniel drew up.
- 2:34:55Renew drops the jacket and the glove and reaches for the bat. So Merritt Renew is going to bat for Lindy McDaniel.
- 2:35:10Dick LeMay is the left hander throwing in the bullpen for the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:35:19Merritt Renew is batting 463. It's been a 41-times-in-19 hit.
- 2:35:33Renew has two home runs and eight runs battered in. He came to the Chicago Cubs from the Houston Colt 45.
- 2:35:42Tracy Salad continues to stay warm by firing in the tosses to Tammy Taylor.
- 2:36:02Carl Willie and Ken McKenzie continue to throw in the bullpen for the Mets.
- 2:36:08Earlier this year, Merritt Renew had a fractured jaw.
- 2:36:23He steps into the batter's box. Tracy Salad, rubbing up a ball, goes to the Rodden bag.
- 2:36:35It's the Cubs four and the Mets four with the Cubs batting in the top half of the ninth inning.
- 2:36:39Runners at first and third, two men out.
- 2:36:46Here's the pitch and it's low for ball one. Time to breaking ball.
- 2:37:07Salad working deliberately. Runners leading first and third, pitch is swung on and foul. Back onto the screen and out of play.
- 2:37:19One and one to count.
- 2:37:29When New York Mets battle back on the bottom of the eighth, it tires this game. Right now Fernandez is coming in to have a word with Salad.
- 2:37:37And they're trying to put down a curve uprising here in the top of the ninth so they can have another shot in the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:37:45That's trying to pull out a game in which they trail at one point by a score of four to nothing.
- 2:37:51One-one pitch, mix is high and it's two balls and one strike.
- 2:37:59To a merit renew.
- 2:38:09Ken Hubs is due up next for the Cubs.
- 2:38:18The ball is off-ranks. Breaking ball is thrown up at the ground ball. Taken by Harkness, he'll have to play to Salad. He does in time and he's out.
- 2:38:24Lacey Salad covering it first as Harkness went to his right to glove the ball.
- 2:38:30And in the top of the ninth, the Cubs got no runs. No hits. No errors. Two left and it's the end of eight and a half innings of play.
- 2:38:39It's the Mets four and the Cubs four.
- 2:38:44Well, you heard us say it's beer as beer should say. Think of that for a minute.
- 2:38:50Isn't that what you want in a beer?
- 2:38:52But you want a beer that's refreshingly dry to the taste with a flavor that's brisk and bright and clean clear through?
- 2:38:59Well, that is Reingold. Reingold is brewed to be just that.
- 2:39:05Brewed of the choicest ingredient, brewed the long, slow, costly away.
- 2:39:10Reingold is everything you look for in beer. And dry tells you why.
- 2:39:15Yes, extra dry means Reingold's a better beer. It's a wonderful beer.
- 2:39:20And extra dry means Reingold beer is more refreshing.
- 2:39:24And the more refreshing a beer is, the more you're going to enjoy it.
- 2:39:27So enjoy fine, cold Reingold beer.
- 2:39:31It's a million to have made Reingold New York's largest selling beer.
- 2:39:43For the Chicago Cubs, Dick LeMare is coming in to do the pitching.
- 2:39:48He was recalled by the Cubs from Atlanta where he had won three and lost three.
- 2:39:56He had an earned run average of 2.22.
- 2:40:00This is his second relief appearance. He made an appearance on the 22nd of April
- 2:40:04before he went out at Pittsburgh, which he pitched one in the third inning
- 2:40:08until he allowed no runs on two hits.
- 2:40:10So this is his first appearance since he came back.
- 2:40:13Dick LeMare is a left-hander.
- 2:40:16It was something of a sensation when he originally came up with the San Francisco Giants.
- 2:40:24And the New York Mets here in the bottom half of the ninth inning
- 2:40:28will be sending up Tim Harkness to face the left-hander.
- 2:40:33Through eight and a half innings, the Mets have four runs on six hits.
- 2:40:37The Cubs have four runs on seven hits.
- 2:40:43LeMare was traded from the Giants to the Cubs over the winter
- 2:40:47and then from the Cubs on the Cubs during the spring training period.
- 2:40:53Tim Harkness is one for three this afternoon.
- 2:41:00He is in and waiting.
- 2:41:02Bottom half of the ninth inning, score inside.
- 2:41:10LeMare into the full windup and the pitch.
- 2:41:13It's low for a ball.
- 2:41:16It's sort of a whirlwind delivery as with a lot of arms, a lot of legs,
- 2:41:21a lot of feet and a knee or two.
- 2:41:23Here's the pitch.
- 2:41:24It's inside for a ball.
- 2:41:25It's 2-0.
- 2:41:34Charlie Neal is on deck for the Mets.
- 2:41:38That pitch is low and it's out to three and on out of Tim Harkness.
- 2:41:50Nick LeMare delivers something like a deck chair unfolding.
- 2:41:54Here's the pitch and it's a called strike, 3-1.
- 2:41:57Harkness tried to bluff his way down to first.
- 2:42:00Three balls and one strike.
- 2:42:07Jack Warner is up and throwing again to call Bill Ben.
- 2:42:10Here's the pitch in there for a called strike, too,
- 2:42:12and it's a full count now to Harkness.
- 2:42:18So now we've come to the playoff pitch time.
- 2:42:22It's on the way.
- 2:42:23Point on and there's a looper in the center field
- 2:42:25and right there is Nelson Matthews to make the catch.
- 2:42:30Harkness goes out to center.
- 2:42:32There's one away and Charlie Neal is coming up.
- 2:42:34Charlie Neal who missed a home run by inches.
- 2:42:37Celeste Hill in the bottom half of the seventh.
- 2:42:47Score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:42:54That's trying to pull this one out here to get an even break in the two-game series.
- 2:42:58May winds and fires.
- 2:43:01It's fastball in there for a called strike, 1.
- 2:43:12What's up outside?
- 2:43:17One and one.
- 2:43:25Fastball in there for a called strike.
- 2:43:28Went back to the blazer and it's one and two.
- 2:43:32Carl Willie is up and throwing again into both ends of the net.
- 2:43:41Let up, flung on and fouled off.
- 2:43:43Charlie Neal chopped it down.
- 2:43:45Stay alive, it's one and two.
- 2:43:48Chico Fernandez is on deck.
- 2:43:55That's a let up outside.
- 2:43:57Two and two.
- 2:44:05And the 2-2 pitch.
- 2:44:07Flung on, fouled off, upstairs and out of play.
- 2:44:11Count holds 2-2.
- 2:44:16This is the concluding game of the current home stand.
- 2:44:21Here's 2-2 pitch.
- 2:44:23Let up, flung on and fouled off.
- 2:44:25Charlie got a little piece of it.
- 2:44:27Count holds it 2-2.
- 2:44:32The Mets will be back here on Friday afternoon, July 5th.
- 2:44:41The pitch, flung on and lined in the center.
- 2:44:44Nelson Matthews coming straight in and he makes the catch.
- 2:44:48Neal has lined up the center, two away, and that brings up Fernandez.
- 2:44:56And now it's up to Chico as far as the Mets chances are winning here and the bottom of the night is a concern.
- 2:45:07And it has one home run and five runs batted in.
- 2:45:14Now he pitches in there.
- 2:45:16Chico ran his hand down the bat, sort of bluffed the bunt in taking the pitch.
- 2:45:20It's strike one.
- 2:45:24Here's a play on a line shot into left field for a base pitch for Fernandez.
- 2:45:28Williams is up with it.
- 2:45:29We raise it in.
- 2:45:30Chico turns and holds it first with a single little out-and-mouth.
- 2:45:33Tracy Salad is few up and let's see what Casey does.
- 2:45:37He has Rod Kniell at the bat rack.
- 2:45:40The hot rod is getting the hard hat and selecting the timber and he'll be up in a moment.
- 2:45:45Back for Salad and Carl Willie is the man warming the bullpen.
- 2:45:53Rod Kniell being announced now.
- 2:46:03Rod Kniell is batting two-thirteen.
- 2:46:05He has five runs batted in.
- 2:46:08There are two men out to score the side, four-four.
- 2:46:24Right fielder Ellis Burton moves in now.
- 2:46:29Right-hand batter Rod Kniell waits for the pitch.
- 2:46:33It is lined into right field for a base hit and Fernandez is on his way to third.
- 2:46:38Burton takes it off the wall.
- 2:46:40He throws it to the center of the infield and it is taken by LeMay who is halfway between third and home backing up and Kniell moves on to second.
- 2:46:48So the next pair run is at second and third.
- 2:46:51Two men out and Jim Hickman coming up.
- 2:46:54A line drive single to right by Kniell and he moves to second on the throw-in as Burton simply plays the ball off the wall
- 2:47:01and threw it to the center of the infield and it came all the way through to Dick LeMay who was backing up wherever the throw happened to come.
- 2:47:08And Bob Kennedy is on his way to the mound now.
- 2:47:11Jack Warner has been throwing in the bullpen and he is going to go to the bullpen to get the right-hander here to face right-hand batter Jim Hickman.
- 2:47:18Jack Warner has not made an appearance.
- 2:47:22More to Chicago Cubs that is being brought up from Salt Lake City.
- 2:47:30So the Mets have runners at second and third.
- 2:47:33Two men out, bottom half of the ninth inning, score is tied 4-4 and Jack Warner is on his way into the bullpen.
- 2:47:53Jack Warner at Salt Lake City won two games and lost one.
- 2:48:00He saw that action down there last night in the bullpen but didn't get into the ball game.
- 2:48:05This is his first appearance.
- 2:48:17So Jack Warner comes on now in relief of left-hander Dick LeMay.
- 2:48:24Warner is a right-hander.
- 2:48:33There are no other games in progress in the Major League.
- 2:48:38This is the only afternoon game scheduled.
- 2:48:41All the other action is scheduled for tonight.
- 2:48:44That will be Philadelphia at Pittsburgh, San Francisco Giants at St. Louis,
- 2:48:50the Los Angeles Dodgers at Cincinnati, and the Houston Colts 45s at Milwaukee.
- 2:48:56In the American League, the New York Yankees are in Chicago tonight to take on the White Sox.
- 2:49:02The Cleveland Indians are in Boston to meet the Red Sox.
- 2:49:05The Washington Senators are in Kansas City to play the A's.
- 2:49:08The Detroit Tigers are in Minnesota to play the Twins.
- 2:49:11And the Baltimore Orioles meet the Los Angeles Angels in a twilight doubleheader in Los Angeles.
- 2:49:19Warner is taking his warm-up tosses.
- 2:49:22He has two left, says umpire Dan Lannis behind the plays.
- 2:49:27Only a lot five, you'll recall, under this year's National League regulations.
- 2:49:33And as Ralph Conner has remarked earlier, about all you need to warm up on a day like this is to comb your hair.
- 2:49:3995 degrees in New York.
- 2:49:43Jim Hickman steps in four times without a hit today.
- 2:49:52Now Dick Bertil, the catcher, comes out to get checked out with Jack Warner.
- 2:49:58And the fans get the chance started. This is something that Jack Warner hasn't heard before.
- 2:50:16Jim Hickman in and waiting.
- 2:50:19Fernando is the base runner at third and Rod Canneal the base runner at second.
- 2:50:22Warner into the full windup and here's the pitch.
- 2:50:25It is tipped off as Hickman moved up to push it down the first baseline
- 2:50:31and just barely nicked it back into the catcher's glove for strike one.
- 2:50:37Two minutes out.
- 2:50:43And now Fernandez bluffs the start down the third baseline and Hickman takes the pitch in there for a called strike two.
- 2:50:50Fernandez dug for about a half a dozen steps in the direction of home plate.
- 2:50:54On the pitch.
- 2:51:00Two strike count to Hickman.
- 2:51:11Warner has the sign, works with the windup, pitch is flung on and foul back out of play.
- 2:51:17Got hold of two strikes to Hickman with Ron Hunt on deck.
- 2:51:24Two minutes out in the score tide, 4-4 on the bottom half of the ninth inning.
- 2:51:34Again the two strike offering. Flung on and the strike three is stuck in the hot and will be going into extra innings.
- 2:51:40So Warner comes in to put out the fire and at the bottom of the ninth the Mets got no runs on two hits.
- 2:51:48No errors and two left.
- 2:51:50And at the end of nine full innings the score is tied. The Cubs four, the Mets four.
- 2:52:00This is the concluding game of the current home stand.
- 2:52:03The Mets will be in Buffalo tomorrow night. That is an exhibition game between the Mets and their top farm club.
- 2:52:08It will not be broadcast or televised.
- 2:52:12However the Mets will be opening up in Pittsburgh on Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon
- 2:52:18and that entire series in Pittsburgh will be carried on both radio and television.
- 2:52:25The Mets will be coming back here against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday afternoon, July 6.
- 2:52:33And then the first Saturday night game of the season and then a Sunday afternoon game.
- 2:52:39For the New York Mets now Carl Willey is coming in to pitch.
- 2:52:44Carl Willey being brought in as Tracy Salad was removed for the pinch hitter.
- 2:52:58If you'd like to be about the business of getting tickets for a future Met game
- 2:53:04the advance ticket window here at the Polo Grounds is open seven days a week.
- 2:53:08It is at street level on the Eighth Avenue side.
- 2:53:12You're a commuter coming in by train to either Grand Central Station or Pennsylvania Station.
- 2:53:17You can pick up tickets on the way in in the morning or on the way out in the evening
- 2:53:22because they are convenient ticket locations at each station, each terminal.
- 2:53:27You can get a ticket reservation at any of the Howard's closest stores or you can order your tickets by mail.
- 2:53:31It's ticket manager Polo Grounds, New York 39, New York.
- 2:53:35Right now we go to the top of the 10th and coming up to lead off is Kenny Hubbs.
- 2:53:40And coming in here to carry along is Ralph Keiner.
- 2:53:44Okay Lindsay, Kenny Hubbs who has no hits and four times up will go against Carl Willey.
- 2:53:50Carl with a record of six wins and six losses.
- 2:53:54Right handed pitcher, this is his second appearance in relief.
- 2:53:57His first appearance was in relief against Milwaukee at the start of the season.
- 2:54:03And Carl's first pitch is one on a missed strike one.
- 2:54:10Hubbs the right hand batter batting 236.
- 2:54:13It'll be Hubbs, Bertell and Nelson Matthews against Carl Willey.
- 2:54:21Now Carl with a big wind up and back with a curve ball.
- 2:54:24Again a swing, he strikes two.
- 2:54:28Now the fourth pitcher used by manager Casey Stengel.
- 2:54:31Al Jackson was the starter. He worked six innings, gave up all four runs.
- 2:54:35Larry Benard another fine performance going two innings, no runs and no hits.
- 2:54:39Stalart went one innings, no runs and no hits and now Carl Willey.
- 2:54:46Here's the two strike delivery, a fastball just missing low, one ball two strikes.
- 2:54:51For the Cubs, Bob Buell worked six innings. He was charged with three runs.
- 2:54:56Don Elston in relief, him gave up the time run.
- 2:55:00After Elston it was Lindy McDaniel and Dick LeMay and now Jack Warner in the ballgame.
- 2:55:06Willey at one two, a curve ball, strike three.
- 2:55:09Hubbs swinging over the top of the curve ball and that's strike out.
- 2:55:13The first for Carl Willey, number six in the game for the Mets and it brings up Dick Bertell.
- 2:55:18Dick has two hits and four times up. He has had the last hit in the game for the Cubs.
- 2:55:22That came in the fifth inning. That drove in the fourth run for Chicago.
- 2:55:33Bertell a right hand batter batting two fifty four.
- 2:55:36And then in the second one, Dick Circle, Lou Brock. He's a left hand batter.
- 2:55:49Now the first pitch to Dick Bertell, a curve ball, a swing and a miss, strike one.
- 2:56:03Cubs four, Mets four, one out top of the tenth inning.
- 2:56:07Willey back to work with a fastball that's low, one ball, one strike.
- 2:56:12Cubs scored one run in the first inning, picked up their second run in the second, added two more in the fifth.
- 2:56:18Mets trailing four nothing in the bottom half of the sixth.
- 2:56:22So three runs, one in the double by Duke Snyder, the other two on a home run by Frank Thomas.
- 2:56:27They added their time run in the eighth.
- 2:56:29Now Willey back again and it's low for ball two, two balls and one strike.
- 2:56:49Two balls and one strike.
- 2:56:52One man out.
- 2:56:54And the pitch by Carl is a fastball fouled off to the right side.
- 2:56:58He just gives chase but then gives up as the ball goes in the stands.
- 2:57:02Now now a round's out at two and two.
- 2:57:06Carl has appeared before the Cubs one other time.
- 2:57:10He won that game two nothing and he pitched a fine three hitter.
- 2:57:22That was back on April 24th.
- 2:57:25Cubs and Mets have played six games so far with each team coming out a win or three times.
- 2:57:32Now Willey with a new ball.
- 2:57:34Here's the two-two pitch to Bertell.
- 2:57:36Kirby checks the time.
- 2:57:39Bertell was way out there but got the bat back and it's called ball three.
- 2:57:46Everybody in the ballpark looking for a strike call right there except home plate umpire Stan Landis.
- 2:57:54Full count at three and two.
- 2:57:57And the pitch by Willey.
- 2:57:59Fastball hit off of the hands right back of the pitchers mound.
- 2:58:02Tim Harkness coming in and he makes the catch for out number two.
- 2:58:14That'll bring up pitch hitter Lou Brock batting for Nelson Matthews.
- 2:58:18Brock a left hand batter.
- 2:58:21Matthews going out a right hand batter.
- 2:58:25Brock if you recall is a fellow who hit one into the right center field stands.
- 2:58:29The only man to ever do so here in the Polar Grounds.
- 2:58:32That was last year.
- 2:58:34This year he's batting 264 with three home runs and 18 runs batted in.
- 2:58:42There have been two other balls in the center field.
- 2:58:44One by Joe Adcock.
- 2:58:46The other by Hank Aaron.
- 2:58:48They were on the left center field side of center field.
- 2:58:55Brock has fine speed and Johnny Neal shortens up a third base against him.
- 2:58:59Here's the first pitch a fastball strike one.
- 2:59:02Comes four, that's four.
- 2:59:04Two men on top of the tenth.
- 2:59:11Beyond deck batter is Ernie Banks.
- 2:59:14And now Willey with a one strike delivery.
- 2:59:16A curve ball popped up in foul territory over in the third base side.
- 2:59:20Johnny Neal running for it but he can't catch up with it.
- 2:59:23The ball hits the warning track and bounces into the stands.
- 2:59:28Ball was not high enough in the air to give Johnny time to get to it.
- 2:59:32But Carl Willey now is on two to Lou Brock.
- 2:59:48Willey taking the sign from Sammy Taylor.
- 2:59:51And now into the windup and here's the two strike delivery.
- 2:59:54Fastball and he's got him looking.
- 2:59:56Strike three.
- 2:59:59Two strikeouts for Carl Willey and his first inning.
- 3:00:04And the score now at the end of nine and one half innings of play.
- 3:00:07The Cubs four and that's four.

- 3:01:16Ask for Reingold extra dry beer.
- 3:01:20Lou Brock is staying in the ball game.
- 3:01:23He is playing in right field and moved to center field.
- 3:01:26Burton, Alice Burton in center field from right field and in the game Lou Brock.
- 3:01:31Who was a pinch hitter for the center fielder Nelson Matthews.
- 3:01:37On the mound Jack Warner working his second inning.
- 3:01:39He came in the pitch to one man and he got him on a strikeout.
- 3:01:44That was Jim Heckman.
- 3:01:45The Mets at that time had runners at second and third.
- 3:01:47And of course the runner at third base would have won the game in the bottom half of the ninth.
- 3:01:51First man up against Warner will be Ron Hunt.
- 3:01:54Ron has one hit and four times up.
- 3:02:05Warner a right hander and his first pitch is a fastball that's inside for ball one.
- 3:02:10Cubs have four runs on seven hits and Mets have four runs in eight.
- 3:02:17It'll be Ron Hunt, Duke Snyder and Frank Thomas.
- 3:02:22All against the right hander Jack Warner who is making his first appearance for the Cubs.
- 3:02:30Here's the 1-0 delivery.
- 3:02:32Overhand fastball hit the center field.
- 3:02:34Moving back is Burton.
- 3:02:35He turns and he makes the catch.
- 3:02:37Ball is hit well to center field but not high enough to go far enough.
- 3:02:41And it comes to have one out with Duke Snyder coming up.
- 3:02:53Duke has one hit and three times up.
- 3:02:55The two times he was put out he hit the ball well.
- 3:02:59In the first inning Burton while playing right field made one of the best catches of the year on him.
- 3:03:05Had Rob Duke of at least a double possibly a triple.
- 3:03:09And his second time up Nelson Matthews in center field went back 440 feet away in center field to make a catch.
- 3:03:17Duke then doubled the right to drive in a run.
- 3:03:19There's a line drive to center of base hit.
- 3:03:22Taking on the short hop after one bounce by Burton and the Mets now have the winning run at first base with one man out and Frank Thomas coming to back.
- 3:03:31Frank has driven in three runs. He has had a two run home run and his last base hit drove in the timer in the ball game.
- 3:03:38Warming up in the bullpen for the Cubs now in a hurry is Jim Brewer, a left hander.
- 3:03:51Thomas with three hits and four times up, a right hand batter.
- 3:03:55Frank is making a big climb to get back up in the normal batting position for him.
- 3:04:02He's now batting 259 after a very slow start.
- 3:04:14Now we're going to have a pinch runner Jimmy Peresaw coming in to run for Duke Snyder.
- 3:04:41Jimmy Peresaw, a pinch runner for Duke Snyder and he'll probably stay in the ball game defensively if the Mets have to play in the 11th inning.
- 3:04:48First pitch to Frank Thomas, a curve ball outside for ball one.
- 3:04:51That's the first curve that Jack Warner has thrown since he's come in the ball game.
- 3:04:58He is now pitching to his fourth man.
- 3:05:01Here's the 1-0 pitch, again the curve and it's outside for ball two.
- 3:05:16Two balls, no strikes. The score tied at 4-4, bottom half of the 10th inning. A quick throw to Peresaw back, no tag made by Ernie Banks.
- 3:05:28Here's the stretch and the pitch back to Thomas.
- 3:05:31Fly ball hits to left field. Billy Windham's coming in, glass is down.
- 3:05:36He's shading from the sun and he makes the catch for out number two.
- 3:05:39That will bring up the left hand batter Sammy Taylor.
- 3:05:42Back to first base Jimmy Peresaw while we wait for Taylor to come to bat.
- 3:05:46We'll pause for station identification.
- 3:05:50A-10 on the dial, WGY in Schenectady, one minute before five.
- 3:05:56Ralph Garner along with Lindsey Nelson and Bob Murphy from the Polar Ground.
- 3:06:00We're in extra innings now, bottom half of the 10th inning.
- 3:06:03The Cubs had a 4-0 lead but the Mets bounced back to score three runs in the sixth and one run in the eighth to tie it up.
- 3:06:10And we're in there now at 4-4, two men out.
- 3:06:13The batter Sammy Taylor with Jimmy Peresaw on at first base.
- 3:06:26First pitch to Sammy Taylor, a hard swing and a foul ball back in the screen.
- 3:06:30Sam was going for all it was worth and that one pitch up around the shoulders.
- 3:06:36And Jack Warner now out in front, all in one, still throwing to the bullpen is Jim Brewer.
- 3:06:52Sammy has yet to pick up a base hit in this game.
- 3:06:55He is all for four.
- 3:06:57That drops his average down to 276.
- 3:07:04Now the stretch, a look at first base and the pitch back to Taylor, a hard ground ball down to Ernie Banks.
- 3:07:09He comes up with a ball, moves to first base, makes the tag of the bag to retire the side.
- 3:07:14In the inning for the Mets, no runs on one hit.
- 3:07:16There were no errors and one man left on and the score at the end of 10 innings of play.
- 3:07:20The Cubs four runs on seven hits.
- 3:07:22The Mets have four runs and nine hits.
- 3:07:26For the 11th inning to bring you the play-by-play, once again, Lindsey Nelson.
- 3:07:30Thank you very much, Ralph Garner.
- 3:07:32Cookie Lavagento had just been out warming up the pitcher as the forces of personnel are being depleted here.
- 3:07:39Duke Snyder is heading for the clubhouse having been removed for the pinch runner.
- 3:07:43Piersol stays in the ball game at center field and Jim Hickman moves over to right.
- 3:07:47Shortstop Chico Fernandez has gone for a pair of sunglasses.
- 3:07:51He has them and he's on his way back to his position at shortstop.
- 3:07:54And Ernie Banks is up to lead off for the Chicago Cubs in the top half of the 11th inning facing Carl Willis.
- 3:08:01Willie looks in to get a sign from Sammy Taylor, dips into the windup,
- 3:08:08and here's the pitch to the right-hand batter, a breaking ball high for ball one.
- 3:08:12Mets four and the Cubs four in the 11th inning.
- 3:08:18Again, Willie works.
- 3:08:24Swing out of Pup coming over toward the Mets dugout. It's out of play.
- 3:08:31One and one. This is the eighth extra inning game of the season for the Mets.
- 3:08:36In extra inning competition, the Mets have won three and lost four.
- 3:08:45Ernie Banks did not start this ball game. He did not intend to play in the ball game today.
- 3:08:49He thought he was being given a day's rest.
- 3:08:51Here's the one-one pitch. Breaking ball swung on to foul ball coming back.
- 3:08:54Taylor should have a play in front of the dugout of the Cubs and he makes the catch.
- 3:09:00So Banks has fouled out to the catcher. There is one away and Ellis Burton is coming up.
- 3:09:05Switch hitting leadoff man in the cup batting order. Comes around the bat from the left-hand side.
- 3:09:14He had a home run in the second inning.
- 3:09:19That was at that time the second Cub run.
- 3:09:27Now Carl Willie again with the windup and the pitch. Swung on at the ground ball to first.
- 3:09:31It is taken by Harkman. If he gets control, drops it, picks it up, tags the bag and he's out.
- 3:09:36Well, that one ran up his arms, off his chest, caught it in his hands, started to the bag, dropped it,
- 3:09:41picked it up and made the tag near two away.
- 3:09:46Any way you make them, they count just the same if you get there in time.
- 3:09:49Andre Rogers coming up now, right-hand batter.
- 3:09:53He had a brace of doubles in this ball game.
- 3:10:02Leo Burke started the ball game at first base for the Cubs and then when he was ejected from arguing a strike call
- 3:10:08with umpire Stan Landis, Ernie Banks is brought in to play first base.
- 3:10:13Rogers waiting.
- 3:10:16Pitches in there for a call strike for the Cub shortstop.
- 3:10:29Carl Willie gets into that smooth, fluid motion and the pitch is low.
- 3:10:34It's one and one.
- 3:10:39Head winning pitchers in Sunday's doubleheader with the Phil's were Carl Willie and Tracy Stallard.
- 3:10:44They both have seen relief duty in this ball game here today.
- 3:10:53It's a ball low and it's two and one.
- 3:11:10Now the two-one pitch to Andre Rogers.
- 3:11:13Swung hard and lined into the glove of Hutt at second base for the offensively tied at the side.
- 3:11:19Ron Hutt.
- 3:11:23And so in the top of the 11th the Chicago Cubs got no runs on no hits, no errors and none left.
- 3:11:29And at the end of ten and a half innings it's the Cubs four and the Mets four.
- 3:11:35Paul Allen, Lou Brock is up for this first and second not in time and Harkness flies in although there's no play on him with a double.
- 3:11:46It was not hit high enough on the line to get into the stand at the edge of the wall and Brock was right over there against the wall to try to play it and he managed to get it just coming off.
- 3:11:56And it is a double for Harkness to open up the bottom half of the 11th inning with Charlie Neal coming up and that calls for a Cub strategy conference now.
- 3:12:07He has to defend against the possibility of the Mets going to the top to fight to try to move Harkness on over to third where he could score on a fly ball to the outfield or a number of other ways.
- 3:12:21Charlie Neal is 0-4 on this ball game today.
- 3:12:28And again Jim Brewer is up and throwing in the bullpen for the Chicago Cubs.
- 3:12:32Bob Kennedy comes out of the dugout. He is called out there by umpire Stan Landis.
- 3:12:36Landis calls coach Bob Kennedy out.
- 3:12:40Starts to him.
- 3:12:48No indication of what the subject of that conversation is about.
- 3:12:54Now Landis comes back to assume his position behind the plate.
- 3:12:59This is Jesse Lavagetta to get his sign. Ron Santoso to third baseman and on the edge of the grass at third. Banks in on the edge of the grass at first in anticipation of a bunch of chips.
- 3:13:08Here is the pitch it's hung on and foul by Guns and Green and out of play. No bunch there.
- 3:13:15Tim Harkness the base runner at second as the Mets make a bid here in the bottom half of the 11th with the score tied 4-4.
- 3:13:35Jack Warner with the pitch. Fon has a foul ball to the right side and out of play.
- 3:13:41You happen to be a commuter on your way home driving on some of the highways in and around New York.
- 3:13:46Do be careful there are Mets fans in some of those cars.
- 3:13:50And we're in the bottom half of the 11th inning here.
- 3:14:01Charlie Neal in and waiting.
- 3:14:05Warner's pitch is high and away for ball. It's one and two.
- 3:14:09With two strikes on Neal both San Jo at third and Banks at first have retreated to normal depth.
- 3:14:17There is nobody out.
- 3:14:26Pitch is hung on foul off to the right side and out of play.
- 3:14:29The count holds at one and two to Charlie Neal.
- 3:14:34Chico Fernandez is on deck now for the Mets.
- 3:14:42The only available pinch hitter that the Mets have besides pitchers that they have not used is Norm Sherry.
- 3:14:57Now Warner with the pitch high for ball. It's two and two.
- 3:15:14Jack Warner and Carl Willie are of course the pitchers of record in this ballgame.
- 3:15:18Here's two-two pitchers high and away and it's out pulling out of Charlie Neal.
- 3:15:25Warner takes off the glove to look around.
- 3:15:29Mop his brow a little bit.
- 3:15:36Now he's up on the rubber looking in for his time.
- 3:15:39Little rhythmic applause started by the fans here at the polo ground.
- 3:15:43Harkness leads off the bag at second. Here's the playoff pitch.
- 3:15:46Hang on a minute. He's stuck him out.
- 3:15:50Warner's second strike out since he came in and that will bring up Chico Fernandez.
- 3:15:56He's a right-hand batter.
- 3:16:12One away and a runner at second. Score tied 4-4.
- 3:16:20And now with first base open Fernandez is going to be intentionally walked.
- 3:16:24They're not worried about Fernandez. The man they're worried about is Harkness at second base.
- 3:16:28And pitcher Carl Willie is due up next.
- 3:16:34So they're going to walk Fernandez. It's ball two.
- 3:16:42He is of no consequence to the Cubs of course because Harkness is a potential winning run at second base.
- 3:16:48You're in the bottom half of the 11th inning.
- 3:16:54And Norm Sherry is running in from the bullpen now.
- 3:16:58As Fernandez goes down to first, Norm Sherry is cutting across from the bullpen area coming in towards the dugout.
- 3:17:05Taking advantage of this delay, Bertell has gone out to the mound and so has Ernie Banks.
- 3:17:11And Sherry is the only man left for the Mets to use as a penchetta besides pitchers.
- 3:17:20Now Cookie Lavagetta walks out onto the infield grass to talk to Tim Harkness.
- 3:17:26Sally Hemas, the coach at first is talking to Fernandez who is standing on the bag.
- 3:17:34Norm Sherry is getting a bat.
- 3:17:41And he is batting for Carl Willie.
- 3:17:46Norm Sherry is the 19th player to be used by the Mets in this game.
- 3:17:58So Carl Willie is out of the ball game.
- 3:18:01After having retired six consecutive batters in the 10th and 11th innings, he's faced six and he's set down six.
- 3:18:08But Casey Singler is making a move to try to win it here in the bottom of the 11th.
- 3:18:11Going to right hand batter Norm Sherry, he has Galen Cisco up and throwing in the bullpen.
- 3:18:20There is one man out as Sherry comes around.
- 3:18:36Harkness the base runner at second, Fernandez the base runner at first.
- 3:18:43Norm Sherry is in and waiting.
- 3:18:45Jack Warner is up and set.
- 3:18:47Here's the pitch.
- 3:18:48It's a little over down the third base line.
- 3:18:50Santo takes it up the bag.
- 3:18:51He's out there, the throw to first.
- 3:18:53He's out there.
- 3:18:54It's a double play and ends the inning.
- 3:18:56A ground ball taken right out the bag by Santo.
- 3:18:58In one motion he steps on the bag through on the first to Ernie Banks.
- 3:19:03Time to get Norm Sherry. It is a double play.
- 3:19:06And the third is retired.
- 3:19:11In the bottom of the 11th the net shot.
- 3:19:14No runs on one hit. No errors in one left.
- 3:19:17And at the end of 11 full innings of play it is the Mets four and the Cubs four.
- 3:19:24Polly Williams batting against Galen Cisco.
- 3:19:27Cisco the fifth man used by Casey Singler.
- 3:19:31He's in this ball game, has been up five times without a base hit.
- 3:19:34He's a left hand batter and the first pitch to him is bounced down the first base a fair ball.
- 3:19:38Harkness throws to Cisco covering it first for out number one.
- 3:19:46Saul Galen gets one man out on one pitch and this is Galen Cisco's 21st appearance.
- 3:19:52He has a record of three wins and six losses this year.
- 3:20:01Cisco will now work to Ron Sano.
- 3:20:04Ron with a base hit his first time up to continue his consecutive game batting streak.
- 3:20:08He has hit in six consecutive games.
- 3:20:11In this game he has won for four and the first pitch to the right hand batter by Cisco is a curve ball, a strike called.
- 3:20:18Galen Cisco is the 20th man used by the Mets.
- 3:20:24One time before the Mets used more than 20 that was in an extra inning game too.
- 3:20:28They used 21.
- 3:20:32Now Cisco with a one strike delivery a fast ball low on outside one ball one strike.
- 3:20:45The pitcher is due up next for the Chicago Cubs, Jack Warner.
- 3:20:51Now a curve ball hit right off the end of the bat.
- 3:20:53Here comes Harkness in.
- 3:20:54He picks it up and goes over to the line and tags Sando out as he comes on down the line.
- 3:20:59Harkness has been a busy man in this ball game.
- 3:21:04Two men out both handled by Tim Harkness and now the batter Jack Warner.
- 3:21:08Warner batting for the first time.
- 3:21:11No one joined in the bullpen for the Cubs.
- 3:21:13They had a left hander down there.
- 3:21:19Jim Brewer warming up but he was put down and Jack Warner is going to bat for himself.
- 3:21:26The only men the Mets have left on the bench Roger Craig who is scheduled to pitch Friday, Tim McKenzie, Jay Hook and Don Roll.
- 3:21:35Four pitchers.
- 3:21:37Now the pitch to Jack Warner and it's bounced right back to the mound.
- 3:21:40A good play by Galen Sisco. He jumps high in the air to take it on one bounce.
- 3:21:44He calls the first base and that does it.
- 3:21:49All the plays handled right at the pitcher's mound and at first base.
- 3:21:53One, two, three for Galen Sisco and now the Mets come to bat.
- 3:21:57In the bottom half of the 12th inning the score is tied 4 to 4.
- 3:22:05Bottom half of the 12th inning Jack Warner on the mound for the Chicago Cubs.
- 3:22:09He's the fifth man used by the Cubs.
- 3:22:11He came in the ball game in the ninth inning with two outs and met that runners at second and third.
- 3:22:16The winning run at third base and Warner struck out Jim Hickman.
- 3:22:20He worked the 10th inning giving up one hit to Duke Snyder.
- 3:22:24Duke was left at first base as Warner picked up Thomas and Sammy Taylor.
- 3:22:29In the 11th inning Kim Hawkins doubled to start the inning off against Warner and he was left at second base as Warner got Charlie Neal a strikeout.
- 3:22:37And after an intentional pass to Tico Fernandez he got Norm Sherry a pinch hitter to hit into a double play.
- 3:22:44So now Warner starts here in the 12th inning. He'll be pitching to Jim Hickman.
- 3:22:48Jim has no base hits and five times up in this game.
- 3:22:51And here's the first pitch for the right hand batter. A fastball outside for ball one.
- 3:23:06Now Warner back to work and a fastball is swung on for strike one. One ball, one strike.
- 3:23:19Warner making his first side in the major league.
- 3:23:24Now the one-one delivery curveball outside for ball two. He throws hard. He's a solid, soundly built ball.
- 3:23:37Five-eleven, 190 pounds.
- 3:23:41And Hickman takes outside for ball three. Three balls and one strike.
- 3:23:47Warner lives in Phoenix, Arizona.
- 3:23:50He is 22 years of age. Started pitching in 1958.
- 3:23:56In 1959 he was 13 and three in the minor league.
- 3:23:59There's a fastball at the knees for strike two.
- 3:24:04In 1961 it was hampered by a sore arm and in 1962 he appeared in seven games with the Cubs in April with no record.
- 3:24:12Now three-two to Hickman and there's a hard drive to the third baseman Ron Sano.
- 3:24:17Sano moving to his left, one-handed for out number one.
- 3:24:26And with one out the batter will be Ron Hunt. Ron has one hit and five times up.
- 3:24:34Score four to four. The Cubs pull runs on seven hits. The Mets have four runs and ten hits.
- 3:24:39The final game of this two-game series.
- 3:24:45Getting tough to see at home plate now. The shadow extending across in front of a home plate about ten feet out.
- 3:24:51And of course this time of day, this time of day it's right off of the center field scoreboard.
- 3:24:58Here's the first pitch. It's a curveball outside and low for ball one.
- 3:25:13Warner into the lineup and the 1-0 delivery. A fastball low and outside at the knees for strike one.
- 3:25:22One ball, one strike.
- 3:25:31And at 1-1 Warner comes back with a curve that's too low.
- 3:25:35Two balls and one strike. Warner's curveball is a fast breaking curve.
- 3:25:40He's sort of a short-arm pitcher, very sneaky fast with his fastball.
- 3:25:50Two balls and one strike. And a fastball is on the outside corner. That evens the count of two balls and two strikes.
- 3:25:59Mets in the bottom half of the 12th inning. Their longest game in their brief history, a 15-inning affair, was the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 3:26:06Al Jackson went all the way and that one lost it. Now at 2-2 the pitch is a curveball just outside for a full count of three and two.
- 3:26:16The on-deck batter, Jimmy Pearsall, he'll be batting for the first time.
- 3:26:27Last run of this game came back in the eighth inning. Fastball hits the second base. Kenny Hubbs comes up with it.
- 3:26:34And he goes to Ernie Banks for the second out in the 12th inning. That will bring up Jimmy Pearsall.
- 3:26:51Pearsall batting for the first time has one home run and nine RBIs. He is batting 220.
- 3:27:01And the first pitch to Jim is a fastball high for ball one.
- 3:27:17Warner back with a fastball. It's on for strike one. One ball, one strike. Hubbs for, Mets for, bottom half of the 12th.
- 3:27:32Here's the 1-1 pitch, low for ball two. Warner works in a hurry. He just pumps away.
- 3:27:43Now Stan Landis, the home plate umpire, dusting off the right corner of the plate.
- 3:27:49Two balls and one strike. And the pitch to Jim. Fastball fouled away.
- 3:27:57So Warner has picked the count up to two balls and two strikes.
- 3:28:08Dick Bertell, who has caught all the way, now walking the ball back to the pitcher's mound. A new ball being put in play and Bertell is rubbing the ball up.
- 3:28:21Kasey just turned in to cut score to run in the first, to run in the second, and two in the fifth. They let four nothing, but the Mets came back to score three in the sixth and they tied it up in the eighth inning.
- 3:28:32They've had a run short since the bottom half of the eighth inning. Here's the 2-2 pitch, high for ball three. So once again, Jack Warner has gone a full count.
- 3:28:43As he goes to three and two to Jimmy Fearsall. The on deck batter is Frank Thomas. Frank has driven in three of the runs in this ball game.
- 3:28:51Two run home run two. And a fastball is high for ball four and that brings up Frank.
- 3:29:06Frank singled in the second inning for his first hit. And now Jimmy Fearsall takes off for second base. A throw there to the second baseman Kenny Hubbs is in time and he is out.
- 3:29:20Jimmy Fearsall trying to catch the Cubs by surprise ends up as the surprise one as he is throwing out.
- 3:29:27Kenny Hubbs making the play at second base so Frank Thomas will not get a chance to bat in the twelfth inning. He'll work in the thirteenth.
- 3:29:35In the inning for the Mets no runs, no hits, no errors, one walk and no one left on base. And the score at the end of twelve innings of play, the Cubs four, the Mets four.
- 3:29:46He wasn't on the rubber and Jimmy Fearsall thought he could get a jump and make it all the way but he didn't because Warner simply turned and tossed to Kenny Hubbs in plenty of time.
- 3:29:56So now we're going to the thirteenth, Cisco on the mound for the New York Mets and Hubbs is at the plate.
- 3:30:01A right hand batter, Cisco into the wind up in the pitch and it's in there for a called strike.
- 3:30:07At one time in this ball game the Cubs led by a score of four to nothing. Mets tied it up four, four to bring it out into extra inning.
- 3:30:17There's a breaking ball just missed high and it's one and one.
- 3:30:20Cisco again gets the sign and the one-one delivery is put on and fouled off. Strike two.
- 3:30:41That ball just nicking Sammy Taylor, the foul ball. He is it as far as Mets catching is concerned.
- 3:30:47Scott Coleman and Norm Sherry both have made pinch hitting appearances.
- 3:30:59Cisco shakes off a sign, now has the one he wants, the one-two pitch is put on and missed.
- 3:31:04Low curve ball.
- 3:31:06Third is a strikeout for Cisco and will bring up catcher Dick Buccell.
- 3:31:15He's two for five in this game.
- 3:31:21Mets with four runs on ten hits and the Cubs with four runs on seven hits.
- 3:31:32Cisco with a pitch put on, foul back and out of play. Strike one.
- 3:31:45Lou Brock is now on deck for the Cubs.
- 3:31:51As often happens in extra inning ball games these batting orders are a little bit jumbled.
- 3:31:58Here's a swing and a miss, two strikes out to Buccell.
- 3:32:07The batter is now in shadow and pitcher is still in the bright sunlight.
- 3:32:14Here's a pitch in there for a strike three. Strikeout, consecutive strikeout.
- 3:32:19Will and Cisco and Lou Brock is coming up. Brock batted for Nelson Matthews in the top of the tenth and Carl Willis struck him out.
- 3:32:42Pitch put on and missed, breaking ball.
- 3:32:49We're in the top half of the thirteenth inning. Score tied, four-four.
- 3:32:56Swing and a miss, two strikes out to Lou Brock. Ernie Banks is now on deck for the Cubs.
- 3:33:03Cubs started the day only three games out of first place and the National League standing.
- 3:33:08Two strike pitch, breaking ball, put on and missed and Galen Fisco has struck out the side.
- 3:33:14As we had her, Buccell and Brock on strike and in the top of the thirteenth.
- 3:33:19The Cubs got no runs, no hits, no errors, none left at the end of twelve and a half innings.
- 3:33:24It's the Mets four, the Cubs four.
- 3:33:28For the Chicago Cubs and Ellis Burton is going out of the ball game heading for the clubhouse steps.
- 3:33:34Dan Landis now signaling up to Jack Lee, the public address announcer here, to announce Landrum in center field.
- 3:33:52In the bottom of the thirteenth inning, the New York Mets will send up Frank Thomas.
- 3:34:06Frank had a big two-run homer for the Mets in the bottom of the sixth and he had a single in the eighth that drove him to tying run.
- 3:34:12He also had a single in the second.
- 3:34:15Landrum is the seventeenth Chicago Cubs in the ball game.
- 3:34:18He's a swing and a drive and the left field is going to be in there for a base hit for Frank Thomas.
- 3:34:22Loved by Billy Williams, he plays it in.
- 3:34:24Thomas turns and holds with his fourth base hit of the day.
- 3:34:29As the Mets open up the bottom of the thirteenth with a base hit.
- 3:34:32Now the Cubs have to defend against the possibility of a sacrifice and Ernie Banks calls time.
- 3:34:37Come over and get checked out with pitcher Jack Warner on how they're going to play a possible bunt.
- 3:34:45Frank Thomas in a hot streak right now with four base hits today, four for six.
- 3:34:51Frank has that batting average up to 262.
- 3:34:56Sammy Taylor is the batter, left-hand batter.
- 3:34:58Ron Panto in on the edge of the grad.
- 3:35:01Here's a swing and a little number down the first base line of foul ball, glove by Ernie Banks.
- 3:35:05There was no bunt, it was a full swing.
- 3:35:08Jim Brewer, a left-hander up and throwing in the bullpen for the Chicago Cubs.
- 3:35:14Jim Harkness is on deck for the Mets.
- 3:35:19Thirty-seven ball players have been used in this ball game so far.
- 3:35:28Jack Warner into the stretch.
- 3:35:37Here's a swing and a high fly ball to the left field.
- 3:35:39Billy Williams moves over, looks up into the side, he has it lined up and he makes the catch.
- 3:35:43Thomas tags it first and moves a couple of sets, but that's all, he holds it first base.
- 3:35:49That brings up Jim Harkness, single in the second and doubled in the 11th.
- 3:35:58Mets have four runs on 11 hits. The Cubs have four runs on seven hits.
- 3:36:12This go up and set. I'd rather warn her, up and set.
- 3:36:15Here's a swing and a ground ball that's going to go through for a base hit.
- 3:36:18Frank Thomas, round second, hits for third, block up for the ball, he plays it to second base.
- 3:36:22Thomas pulls in safely at third and Jim Harkness is on with the ground, single to right.
- 3:36:27That will bring up Charlie Neal, who runs it first and third and one man out.
- 3:36:36That's the third hit of the afternoon for Jim Harkness, a ground, single to right.
- 3:36:40Off Jack Warner.
- 3:36:47Charlie Neal has been up five times without a hit today.
- 3:36:53He has one long fly ball out to left field, he had one line dry out to center field.
- 3:36:59Either one of those duplicated right here in this situation would win the ball game for the New York Mets, as they have.
- 3:37:05So such a winning run at third base with one man out.
- 3:37:10Frank Thomas talking things over the cookie lava jetto, the coach's third.
- 3:37:16And now Stan Landis signals out to Tom Garman to signal down to a group of Mets fans in left field to get the banner off the left field fence so they just hold it back about a foot.
- 3:37:29The Chicago Cubs of course bring the MPL in here and they're going to put Charlie Neal on.
- 3:37:35He is being intentionally passed. Charlie Neal is being intentionally passed with Chico Fernandez in the on deck circle.
- 3:37:44What they want to do of course is shut up and play at every base here.
- 3:37:53That is ball three to Charlie Neal being intentionally walked. Warner is set and here is ball four.
- 3:38:00So Neal goes down to first, that will move Harkness to second. Thomas is at third, Fernandez is coming up.
- 3:38:07One man out.
- 3:38:16The Chicago Cubs are playing the in field and the out field in of course because the man they were divided Frank Thomas, the runner at third.
- 3:38:26Warner turns to work straight away.
- 3:38:30We're in the bottom half of the third team now walking out in front of the plate.
- 3:38:35Galen Cisco due up next for the New York Mets.
- 3:38:41Great tell now fires the ball back on out to Jack Warner. Cubs still playing a defensive alignment of in field and an out field end.
- 3:38:50No point playing the out field deep because if it is deep Thomas could tag and score anyway.
- 3:38:56They want to try to cut off that one at the plate.
- 3:39:00Now the strike one pitch to Fernandez. It's time for a ball one and one.
- 3:39:08Thomas the base runner at third, Jim Harkness the base runner at second, Charlie Neal the base runner at first.
- 3:39:15Warner getting a sign from Bertell.
- 3:39:18One one pitch.
- 3:39:20Swung on, ball ball to the right side out of play. It's one and two.
- 3:39:37Landis again signaling down and getting one of the special policemen to try to get the banner removed from the left field wall.
- 3:39:45Warner is working the one two pitch.
- 3:39:47Fly on to the ground ball to third. Sando up for the plate of the plate. He's out at the plate at the fourth play there.
- 3:39:52No other play.
- 3:39:53Base is still loaded and two men out.
- 3:39:55No tag necessary at the plate of Sando plays the ground ball to Bertell and time to force Thomas.
- 3:40:01Galen Cisco is going to bat for himself with the bases loaded.
- 3:40:05Because there is no choice. Only pitchers are left.
- 3:40:11Only Craig, McKenzie, Hook and Rowe are left.
- 3:40:15So Galen Cisco will bat for himself here.
- 3:40:28New York Mets with the bases loaded, two men out so that the Cubs can play normal defensive alignment now.
- 3:40:37Warner lines and fires and there's a pitch in there for a called strike.
- 3:40:40There's a pitch fired low. It's one and one. Galen Cisco.
- 3:40:45Kim Harkness is the base runner at third.
- 3:40:49Neal at second. Fernandez at first.
- 3:40:56Now the one-one pitch.
- 3:40:59He checks the swing, takes outside. It's all two. Two and one.
- 3:41:14Warner looking in for his time.
- 3:41:17Two-one pitch.
- 3:41:19He's going to bat the ground ball to the right side. Hugs it up when it plays over the back end time and the side is retired.
- 3:41:27So ends. The bottom of the 13th and that's got no runs. On two hits, no errors and three left.
- 3:41:34At the end of 13 innings of play, it's the Mets four, the Cubs four.
- 3:41:40He's back at clear saw, his glass is down. He has room and he makes the catch.
- 3:41:51He is batting at 250, a left-hand batter.
- 3:41:54Don is the third center fielder used by the Cubs in this game. Nelson Matthews started.
- 3:42:01Then Ellis Burton was moved from right to center and then Don went in to take Burton's place.
- 3:42:06First pitch to Landrum, a curve ball, a tie for ball one.
- 3:42:16One ball, no strikes. Cisco bearing at the side. He takes one and comes back to the plate with a slider that's low.
- 3:42:23So Gannon is behind 2-0 to Don Landrum with Andre Rogers on deck.
- 3:42:38Pitch back to Landrum outside, ball three.
- 3:42:46Landrum is the 54th man to come to bat for the Cubs.
- 3:42:56And there's a pitch back to the plate for a strike. Make it 55th, just add one more to it.
- 3:43:02Cubs have batted around six times and now Landrum is starting off the seventh time.
- 3:43:08Here's a pitch back to the plate, it's ball four.
- 3:43:11The other Cubs get a baserunner for the first time since the ninth inning when Ron Sano has walked intentionally.
- 3:43:19And with one man out, the batter will be Andre Rogers.
- 3:43:22Rogers has two doubles in the ball game, two walks, a sacrifice, and he has lined out the second.
- 3:43:38Rogers is a right-hand batter and the first pitch to him is a high curve that hangs up two high, ball one.
- 3:43:44Rogers batting 217.
- 3:43:54After Andre Rogers, Billy Williams.
- 3:43:57Cubs four, Mets four, top of the 14th.
- 3:44:01Landrum goes and the pitch is fouled away.
- 3:44:04So on the run and hit play, Landrum returns to first base and the strike count is now one strike in favor of Galen Sisco.
- 3:44:12He also has one ball.
- 3:44:14One-one count.
- 3:44:26Sammy Taylor going out to talk to Galen at the mound.
- 3:44:30Kevin Kenzie still throwing in the bullpen for the Mets. The Mets have used 20 men in the ball game.
- 3:44:35The Cubs have used 17.
- 3:44:40Mets have a day off on the National League schedule tomorrow, but they will be playing a ball game in the International League against their top farm club, Buffalo.
- 3:44:49That game will not be on the radio or television.
- 3:44:53Now time is in. Sammy Taylor back to give the sign.
- 3:44:57Ryan Landrum at first base and the one-one delivery by Galen Sisco.
- 3:45:01A curve ball too low for ball two.
- 3:45:15As Lindsay told you earlier, this is the eighth extra any game for the Mets. They have won three.
- 3:45:24Now Sisco at two-one. Landrum goes and the pitch is hit down to third. It's a foul ball.
- 3:45:31Throw to first base beats Andre Rogers, but Tom Gorman gave the call foul.
- 3:45:35The ball was in fair territory just before it reached the bag, but then it kicked off and went foul before getting to the bag, and the cat now has two and two on Rogers.
- 3:45:46Returning to first base, Don Landrum, Mets have won out here in the 14th, a score tied 4-4.
- 3:46:05Hard to figure out whether that was a good break or not, the ball going foul, because Neal did get his man at first,
- 3:46:10but the Cubs moved Landrum down, if the play had been fair, to second base where he could score on a base hit by the next batter.
- 3:46:18Now two-two. Landrum goes again and there's a fly ball to right field. Moving over is the right fielder, Jim Heckman, and he makes the catch.
- 3:46:26Returning to first base is Don Landrum. Two men out and the batter is Billy Williams.
- 3:46:34Billy Williams is all for six in the game. He has scored one run. The Cubs scored one run in the first inning.
- 3:46:41The run was unearned. They added one more in the second win, Burton Homer, to make it 2-0.
- 3:46:47They added two more in the fifth for their total of four.
- 3:46:51The Cubs have scored two earned runs in the game. The Mets tied the ball game up after scoring three in the sixth on a base hit by Frank Thomas in the eighth inning.
- 3:47:03Frank has had a big day here today. Four hits and six times up. He has a home run, one of the four hits, and he has driven in four runs, I should say three runs of the four.
- 3:47:15Now with two out the batter, Billy Williams, in the first base hit. Williams hit the left field. It's going to be a base hit.
- 3:47:20Coming over is Thomas. He can't get to it. The ball goes on by, and coming around from first base, the score is Don Landrum.
- 3:47:26The ball off the wall. Williams is going to make it inside the park, a home run.
- 3:47:30Here comes a throw in by Frank Thomas, and Billy Williams has it inside the park, home run.
- 3:47:37Frank Thomas elected to try to get to that ball in the air. He misjudged the ball. The ball hit in front of him. He had no chance to block it, and then bounced against the wall and rolled out the left center field.
- 3:47:49Jimmy Pearsaw, the center fielder, did not get over to pick it up, and Williams has it inside the park, home run, and the Cubs lead 6-4.
- 3:47:58While the two men out, Thomas took a chance to get to it, and it caused the mess.
- 3:48:04That is home run number 11 for Bill Williams. His 43rd run batted him in the season, and the batter now is Ron Sano, and he takes the pitch for strike one.
- 3:48:14That base hit, the first base hit in the ball game, and 8-2 third's inning for the Chicago Cubs.
- 3:48:20Met pictures had given up no hits for 8-2 third's innings in relief. Here's the pitch back to Sano at ball one. One ball, one strike.
- 3:48:28Larry Bernard worked two innings without giving up a hit. Stollard worked two, one inning without giving up a hit.
- 3:48:33Lilley worked two innings without giving up a hit. And Cisco worked two and two-thirds innings without giving up a hit.
- 3:48:39Here's the pitch back, a foul tip for strike two.
- 3:48:46Cubs with two runs here in the 14th inning lead now 6-4.
- 3:48:55And Cisco back to work, and he throws a strike call right across the outside corner to retire the side.
- 3:49:01Fourth strikeout for Jalen Cisco, but the Cubs take the lead. They scored two runs on one hit.
- 3:49:07There were no errors, and the score at the end, 13 and one-half innings of play. The Cubs 6, the New York Mets 4.
- 3:49:15Coming to bat is Jim Hickman. Mets need two to tie.
- 3:49:19Actually, the Mets pitchers had nine complete innings without giving up a hit.
- 3:49:24There's the first pitch to Hickman, lying to right field, a base hit.
- 3:49:28So Jim gets his first hit of the ball game, and the Mets now have the time run coming to the plate, Ron Hunt.
- 3:49:42Jack Warner on the mound now looking out at the bullpen. Jim Brewer warming up the left-hander for the cut.
- 3:49:52Warner came in the game in the ninth inning with two men out.
- 3:50:01Ron Hunt's the batter, Ron a right-hand batter, and he has one hit and six drives up.
- 3:50:08For the first pitch is lying to right field, a base hit. Jim Hickman rounds in second and holds.
- 3:50:13The Mets now have runners at first pitch. Second and now Hickman is going at it's second base.
- 3:50:18Hickman rounded too far around second base, and Lou Brock in right field picked the ball up, fired at the second base, and Hickman is out.
- 3:50:33The Cavs with a fine play by Lou Brock have one man out, and the batter coming up for the Mets is Jimmy Fearsall.
- 3:50:59Jimmy batting for the second time. He walked his first time up, and the first pitch to him is ball one, a curve ball.
- 3:51:06Mets have had all kinds of opportunities to score next to their innings. They left two on in the ninth, one on the tenth, one on the eleventh, three on in the thirteenth.
- 3:51:15And here's the pitch back to Fearsall. It's a ball, fastball outside. Two balls and no strikes.
- 3:51:25Paul Toth, the right-hander now throwing alongside of Jim Brewer, left-hander.
- 3:51:32The Cubs working in the bullpen. Mets with the time right at the plate. Score six to four in favor of the Cubs.
- 3:51:39There's a swing and a fastball thrown to first base, but Hunt gets back. Two balls and one strike.
- 3:51:58Now Jack Warner comes back low and outside for ball three. Three balls and one strike. The on-deck batter is Frank Thomas.
- 3:52:19Jack Warner in the first position, and the pitch back to the plate is outside ball four.
- 3:52:24Now the Mets have runners at first and second base, and Frank Thomas coming up.
- 3:52:31Runners at first and second base, and now Bob Kennedy coming to the mound.
- 3:52:40Bob Kennedy to the mound. Jack Warner.
- 3:52:46The pitcher in the ball game and still throwing in the bullpen is Paul Toth, the right-hander.
- 3:52:51Now the sign goes out. The right-hander, Paul Toth, will be coming in the game.
- 3:52:56Jack Warner in his first start in the Major Leagues has done quite a job.
- 3:53:00He came in the ball game in the ninth inning with two men out.
- 3:53:03There were two men on, second and third. The Mets with a chance to win the game, and Warner struck out Jim Hickman.
- 3:53:09He worked the tenth inning giving up one hit to Duke Snyder.
- 3:53:12In the eleventh inning, Tim Harkness doubled the sassy inning off, but Warner left him there.
- 3:53:17In the twelfth inning, he got the Mets one, two, three. In the thirteenth, the Mets had runners on all the bases.
- 3:53:25The bases loaded on two hits in a walk, and Warner got his final out as he got Game in Cisco on a ground ball to second base.
- 3:53:34Here in the fourteenth inning, Jim Hickman let off with a single.
- 3:53:37He moved to second base when Ron Hunt singled the right, but then Jim, in taking too big of a turn at second base,
- 3:53:43was thrown out by the right fielder, Lou Brock.
- 3:53:46Now after walking Jimmy Pearsall and moving Ron Hunt on down to second base, Warner is going out of the game, and Paul Toth is coming in.
- 3:54:06Warner, in working four and two-thirds innings, has given up no runs so far.
- 3:54:12He allowed six bases, he struck out one and he walked four. Two of the walks intentional.
- 3:54:18Paul Toth is the sixth pitcher used in the game by Bob Kennedy. Bob Buell, the starting pitcher, wins six innings.
- 3:54:25Then Don Elston, who worked one and two-thirds.
- 3:54:27Lenny McDaniel, who worked one-third.
- 3:54:29Dick LeMay, who worked two-thirds.
- 3:54:31And Jack Warner, who worked four and two-thirds.
- 3:54:47Paul Toth, the right-hander, has a record of one win and four losses.
- 3:54:52This is his twelfth appearance.
- 3:54:55He has appeared against the Mets one other time. That was on April 24th.
- 3:55:02He was not involved in the decision. He came in in relief and worked three innings, giving up no runs and no hits.
- 3:55:14Toth was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in a trade that sent Harvey Branch to the Cardinals.
- 3:55:22And now Toth completes his warm-up pitches. The Mets were runners at first and second, the time run at first base, and Frank Thomas coming to bat.
- 3:55:31Frank has singled, homered, singled, and singled. He is four for six.
- 3:55:39Frank has driven in three runs, but his play in the top of the fourteenth inning, the play that set up two runs for the Cubs and they took the lead.
- 3:55:50Frank elected with two men out to try to make a tough catch and a ball over by the ball.
- 3:55:54They couldn't get to the ball, and the ball went through for an inside-the-park homerun, two runs scoring.
- 3:56:00Now the pitch to Frank Thomas, a curveball outside for ball one.
- 3:56:09Well, we've seen just about everything in this game here today, and I guess we've been seeing it quite often, but this has been a real thriller.
- 3:56:18Now Toth sets and comes back to Thomas. There's a ball hit high in the air to shallow left.
- 3:56:24Coming back in is Billy Williams, a long run. He's still running and he makes the catch.
- 3:56:29Going back to second base is Ron Hunt, and back to first Jimmy Fearsall.
- 3:56:33Two men out now for the Cubs, and Sammy Taylor comes up.
- 3:56:46Sammy has no base hits in the game. He is 0-6, left hand batter.
- 3:56:52Met with two outs in the bottom half of the 14th inning. Cubs lead 6-4.
- 3:57:18Sammy Taylor in the batter's box. Now here comes Bob Kennedy out to the mound again.
- 3:57:23He has the left-hander warming up, Jim Brewer, and there's a sign out. He's going to bring in Jim Brewer to pitch to Sammy Taylor.
- 3:57:29The Mets have no pinch hitters. They have used 20 men in this ball game.
- 3:57:32The only men left on the bench are pitchers, Roger Craig, Ken McKenzie, Jay Hook, and Don Rall.
- 3:57:39So Sammy Taylor will bat against the left-hand pitcher coming in, Jim Brewer.
- 3:57:45Officially, Paul Toltz worked one-third of an inning.
- 3:57:51He pitched to one batter, getting Frank Thomas to fly out the left field.
- 3:57:59Brewer now the 19th man used by the Cubs in this game. A total of 39 men used in the ball game.
- 3:58:05And while Brewer walks in, we'll have Lindsey bring you up to date of the schedule.
- 3:58:09Head Coach Bob Kennedy is starting on back toward the dugout area, and Brewer now is checking with Ron Santo before starting his warm-up tosses.
- 3:58:21And as he starts to get warmed up, coming back in here once again is Ralph Kiner.
- 3:58:27Okay, Lindsey, the seventh pitcher, pitcher used in the ball game by Bob Kennedy.
- 3:58:32Jim Brewer now taking his warm-up pitches. He has a record of two wins and one loss.
- 3:58:37This is his 13th appearance. He has not appeared against the Mets so far this year.
- 3:58:43Jim is 25 from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. 1962 against the Mets, he won none and lost one.
- 3:58:51He's a fellow, if you recall, was a victim of a line punch by Billy Williams, not Pilly Williams, Billy Martin,
- 3:59:01in a little knockdown, Frank, I guess, in Chicago a few years back.
- 3:59:05Brewer was put out of action by Billy Martin.
- 3:59:10Okay, it's Sammy Taylor. He represents the go-ahead run in the first pitch in the ball game to Sammy Taylor by Jim Brewer,
- 3:59:18is outside for ball one at curveball. Mets have the time run at first base, the winning run at home plate.
- 3:59:24Cubs have two men out in the bottom half of the 14th. We're right down to the end of the line.
- 3:59:30And I'll be warming up on the bullpen now for the cut. Here's the 1-0 pitch. It's low for ball two.
- 3:59:37Ball in the dirt dug out by Dick Bertell. Ron Hunt at second base.
- 3:59:43Now Ernie Banks digging in in back of Jimmy Pearsaw. Pearsaw puts on a little act.
- 3:59:55Two balls, no strikes.
- 4:00:04Brewer takes the stretch position and comes back low for ball three.
- 4:00:08So it's three and all. Brewer one pitch away from holding up the bases. The on-dick batter is Tim Harkness.
- 4:00:25Brewer is set. Banks again behind Pearsaw. Here's a pitch to the plate, a fastball through for strike one.
- 4:00:36Cubs, after being shut out and kept hitless for nine innings by New York Mets pitchers,
- 4:00:41scored two runs in the top of the 14th to take the lead six to four.
- 4:00:46Now the pitch back to Sammy Taylor outside. Ball four and the bases are loaded.
- 4:00:52Moving to third base, Ron Hunt, the second base, the time run Jimmy Pearsaw, the first base on the walk by Jim Brewer, Sammy Taylor.
- 4:01:00The winning run at first base and the batter is Tim Harkness.
- 4:01:17Tim has three hits in the game. His last two times up he has doubled and singles.
- 4:01:22Most times he was left on base as the Mets could not get any runs across from the eighth inning until right now here in the bottom of the 14th.
- 4:01:32Cubs have two men out.
- 4:01:39Harkness to the left and batter.
- 4:01:43And here's the windup in the pitch. Fastball fouled back over by the dugout, the ball going out of play.
- 4:02:06Now Brewer in the windup of the one strike pitch inside. One ball, one strike.
- 4:02:17Mets with the bases loaded.
- 4:02:21Bottom half of the 14th. Here's the pitch.
- 4:02:24And it's taken all for ball two.
- 4:02:27Two balls, one strike.
- 4:02:30The on deck batter is Charlie Neal.
- 4:02:40Now Brewer into the windup and the pitch backs it. Harkness one on a miss for strike two.
- 4:02:47Saw it down to two balls and two strikes.
- 4:02:56Mets have had two base hits and two walks in this inning but they have not scored.
- 4:03:05Now Brewer at two-two. The pitch to Harkness. It's low, ball three. And now the ball game is all the way down the line.
- 4:03:13And the catcher now, Dick Fritel, arguing very vehemently.
- 4:03:21Fritel with a strong protest on the call. A count, three balls and two strikes.
- 4:03:33Three balls and two strikes. The runners will be going. Two men out. Bottom half of the 14th. The Mets need two to tie.
- 4:03:42Here's the stretch position. And the pitch.
- 4:03:45Fastball to Whitetail, keeps the Whitetail way back there. It's going to go all the way. A home run.
- 4:04:15Jim Harkness with a grand slam home run to give the Mets the win by a score of eight to six.
- 4:04:26That grand slammer coming with two men out. The bases loaded. The count, three and zero. And the Mets win it.
- 4:04:34Harkness with his first grand slam home run in his career to give the Mets the win by a score of eight to six.
- 4:04:41We'll be back with a recap of the action in just one minute. How game the Mets have played in their history.
- 4:04:46The Mets winning the ball game on a grand slam home run in the 14th inning with two men out.
- 4:04:51And here to tell you about it and to bring you up to date on the back way is Lindsey Nelson.
- 4:04:56All right, Rascotti. It was a 3-2 pitch hit by Tim Harkness with the bases loaded.
- 4:05:00Two men out in the bottom half of the 14th inning. And he drilled it into the lower attack way out near the bullpen area.
- 4:05:07For the first grand slammer of his career to give the Mets a come from behind victory over the Chicago Cubs by a score of eight to six.
- 4:05:14The Cubs began the afternoon by getting four runs off Al Jackson who was the Mets starter.
- 4:05:19But the Mets battled back to get four and tied up and sent it into extra innings.
- 4:05:24The Mets pitchers were holding the line all the way as they pitched nine innings of no-hit baseball in relief.
- 4:05:30But the Mets could not manage to push across the run.
- 4:05:33In the top half of the 14th inning, the Chicago Cubs got two runs when with two men out and a runner on,
- 4:05:39Billy Williams hit an opposite field line drive to left and Frank Thomas elected to try to make a spectacular catch.
- 4:05:47He could not get to the ball. It banged off the wall by him and before the ball could be recovered,
- 4:05:52Williams had circled the bases, scored an inside the park home run, two runs going on to play, and the Cubs were out in front by a score of six to four.
- 4:06:00And then the New York Mets battled back as Jim Hickman opened up the 14th inning with a single.
- 4:06:05Ron Hutt followed with a single, but Hickman took a wide turn at second and was tapped off the bag to dampen the Mets hopes.
- 4:06:11At that point, Jimmy Pearsall drew a walk.
- 4:06:13Paul Tostes brought in to pitch to Frank Thomas, fly to left, and then Jim Brewer was brought in.
- 4:06:19Sammy Taylor drew a walk to load up the bases.
- 4:06:21And on a 3-2 pitch with runners moving, two men out, Harkness hit his grand slam home run.
- 4:06:27And the final totals for the New York Mets, eight runs on 15 hits and three errors for the Cubs, six runs on eight hits and no errors.
- 4:06:34The winner is Galen Sisco. He's won four and lost six. The loser is Brewer. He's won two and lost two.
- 4:06:39They've had 20 men in the ball game. It was the longest ball game of this season, 14 innings here.
- 4:06:46It was the 22nd win at home for the New York Mets, and that's exactly how many they won here at the Polo grounds last year.
- 4:06:53All of last year they won only 22. Already they've won 22 this year.
- 4:06:57The fans are now gathered under the clubhouse windows in Sunner Field,
- 4:07:01and there's undoubtedly shelling for Timmy Harkness, the hero of the day.
