- 0:20Washington, the AP. President Donald Trump announcing Friday he has a deal
- 0:25with Denmark to bolster the US military presence in Greenland, after months
- 0:28of threatening to take the island by force from the NATO ally,
- 0:32an agreement that also keeps the Arctic territory in Denmark's hands. Trump
- 0:37in a social media post announcing the deal said the emerging agreement
- 0:40gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs
- 0:45in Greenland, completely addressing all of our many US concerns. He added
- 0:50that with the agreement his administration would immediately begin the process of
- 0:54developing a larger military presence on the mineral rich Danish territory. The
- 0:59deal came after officials from US, Greenland, and Denmark quietly negotiated for
- 1:05months behind the scenes, searching for solutions to address some of Trump's
- 1:09security concerns about a territory of roughly fifty six thousand residents. For
- 1:14Trump, the Greenland issue had largely been put on the backburner as
- 1:17he launched a military operation to oust former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduo
- 1:22from power, and joined with Israel to start a war against Iran.
- 1:26With the announcement of the pact, Trump is able to tout a
- 1:30foreign policy achievement ahead of the midterm elections. The six month old
- 1:34Iran conflict has reshaped the race, undermining Trump's campaign pledge to steer
- 1:39clear of foreign conflicts and challenging Republicans as they cling to narrow
- 1:43majorities in Congress. The office of Denmark's Prime
- 1:47Minister Met Frederickson, said the deal will be signed by all three
- 1:51governments next week, during the United Nations General Assembly, but parliamentary action
- 1:57is still needed by the Danish and Greenland governments before it can
- 2:00be enforced. In a statement she said, The agreement recognizes the sovereignty
- 2:05and territorial integrity of Greenland and Denmark, and upholds both people's right
- 2:10to self determination. Greenland Prime Minister Jens Frederick Nielsen said
- 2:15the emerging deal benefits all three governments and recognises Greenland's interests. Allies
- 2:21pushed back on Trump's call for the US to acquire Greenland, With
- 2:25his return to the White House last year, Trump called on Denmark
- 2:29to sell the island to the United States. While insisting Greenland is
- 2:32crucial for U.S. Security, he pointedly wouldn't rule out taking the island
- 2:36by military force, even though Denmark is a NATO ally of the
- 2:40U.S. Denmark and Greenland repeatedly said the island is not for sale
- 2:44and condemned reports of the
- 2:45U.S. Gathering intelligence there. The US push for Greenland was also fiercely
- 2:50opposed by Russia and much of Europe. But Trump with the announcement
- 2:54Friday suggested an understanding may have been reached that could being an
- 2:58end to what was viewed as an existential crisis by Denmark. We
- 3:03look forward to working with the wonderful people of Denmark and Greenland
- 3:07toward a magnificent future with respect to this large and highly strategic
- 3:10parcel of land, Trump said in his post. We will be very
- 3:14protective of it. Trump had claimed the US needs Greenland to deter
- 3:19threats from Russia and China, and has repeatedly made false claims of
- 3:23Chinese and Russian military forces lurking off the island's coastline. The agreement
- 3:28bans any non NATO base in Greenland.
- 3:31Limits adversaries from being able to make investments in Greenland, and guarantees
- 3:35that China and Russia cannot have a Base
- 3:37in Greenland, according to a State Department official who was not authorized
- 3:41to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity. Secretary of
- 3:46State Marco Rubio cheered the statement as a historic deal and huge
- 3:50win for the United States. Greenland will forever be part of the
- 3:54strategic defense area of North America and exclude any adversary from it
- 3:58and the surrounding area, Rubio said. This deal permanently and completely addresses
- 4:03our national security concerns in Greenland. The island is crucial to North
- 4:08America's defense. But the US has long had a military presence in
- 4:13Greenland, holding several bases and installations through the Cold War before dialing
- 4:17back its presence. The U.S. Still operates the remote Pitific Space Base
- 4:22in northwestern Greenland which was built after the US and Denmark signed
- 4:26the Defense of Greenland Treaty in nineteen fifty one. It supports missile
- 4:30warning, missile defense, and space surveillance operations for
- 4:34the US and NATO. Greenland sits off the northeastern coast of Canada,
- 4:39with more than two thirds of its territory lying within the Arctic
- 4:42Circle. That has made it crucial to the defense of North America
- 4:46since World War two, when the US occupied Greenland, to ensure it
- 4:50didn't fall into the hands of Nazi Germany, and to protect vital
- 4:53North Atlantic shipping lanes. Despite Trump's repeated aggressive comments toward Denmark about
- 4:59Greenland, Danish officials had repeatedly made clear that they stood ready to
- 5:03work with the US to expand the American military presence and strengthen
- 5:08US commercial interests in Greenland. Still, Trump's repeated demands for Greenland and
- 5:13threats to take it by force rattled the NATO alliance and discomfited
- 5:17European allies, said Imran Bayumi, an associate director at the Atlantic Council's
- 5:22Skowcroft Center for Strategy and Security. I think Americans really underestimate how
- 5:28damaging it was for the image of the United States and Europe,
- 5:31he said. I think Greenlanders, Danes, Europeans saw this as a real
- 5:35attack on their sovereignty, and it's going to take a lot of
- 5:38work to repair. The AP diplomatic writer Matthew Lee contributed reporting.
