Latest / My Playful Wife — A Tender Literary Love Story / My Playful Wife — Season 1, Episode 49: The Hunger
Transcript
- 0:00My playful wife. God. You did this for two weeks.
- 0:06For me. I don't think I ever fully understood
- 0:09the size of it until now, doing it myself for
- 0:12her. It's the size of love that doesn't make
- 0:15itself the center. I said. You taught me that,
- 0:19actually. The hunger came back for Taro in the
- 0:25summer. in the shape of a man with very white
- 0:27teeth and a very fast plan, and Saloni did the
- 0:31hardest thing a teacher does, which is nothing
- 0:33at all. He found terror the way these people
- 0:37find the gifted young, at a small showing, a
- 0:40little exhibition of student work where her pieces
- 0:43had stood out, as her pieces will always stand
- 0:46out. He ran one of the new labels, the fast,
- 0:50bright ones, the kind that does a drop and a
- 0:52launch and a collaboration and a viral moment,
- 0:55all velocity and noise and the particular gloss
- 0:58of the present tense. And he offered Tara, more
- 1:02or less on the spot, the thing her hunger had
- 1:05been starving for since the day she walked into
- 1:07Celony's slow, quiet workshop. Speed. A name
- 1:12now. Her designs in production within months
- 1:15instead of years. visibility, a following, the
- 1:19swift descent, the skipping of the whole long
- 1:22apprenticeship in favor of being immediately
- 1:24someone. We'll make you a star, he said, and
- 1:28he probably could, and Tara came to the workshop
- 1:31the next morning vibrating with it, lit up, torn
- 1:35down the middle, and laid it on Saloni's table
- 1:38the way you lay down a thing you are half hoping
- 1:40will be taken out of your hands. I have noticed
- 1:43that the young carry their temptations to their
- 1:45teachers the way children carry a frightening
- 1:47object to a parent. Not always wanting it removed,
- 1:51exactly, but wanting it held by someone bigger,
- 1:54wanting the weight of the decision shared, or
- 1:57better, yet lifted entirely off them. There is
- 2:00a real relief on offer in being told what to
- 2:03do and the hungry and the overwhelmed reach for
- 2:07it constantly, mistaking the relief for guidance.
- 2:10Terra had come hoping, half -consciously, that
- 2:14Celonie would take the thing out of her hands,
- 2:16would forbid it, or bless it, or in some way
- 2:20decide it, so that whatever happened next would
- 2:23not be wholly hers to own. It is the most natural
- 2:26wish in the world, and it is exactly the wish
- 2:30a good teacher must refuse to satisfy. And Celonie?
- 2:37who had spent a season teaching this girl to
- 2:39hear, who had poured herself into those young
- 2:42hands, who did not want to lose her and believed
- 2:45with her whole experienced heart that the man
- 2:47with the white teeth was offering a beautiful,
- 2:50fast emptiness, Saloni took her thumb off the
- 2:53scale. I watched her do it, because Tara had
- 2:58come on a morning I was there. bringing chai,
- 3:00doing my edge -of -the -room thing, and I had
- 3:03the strange privilege of watching my wife give
- 3:06to her apprentice the exact gift I had given
- 3:08my wife across the fortnight of the Empire, the
- 3:11gift she had called the loudest love she'd ever
- 3:14been given, the clean, unweighted space, the
- 3:17refusal to steer, the discipline of wanting nothing
- 3:21for the other person but their own true answer.
- 3:25She did not tell Tara not to take it. Every instinct
- 3:29in the room was screaming at her, too. I could
- 3:32see it, the older woman's certain knowledge that
- 3:34the fast, bright thing was a trap, that the speed
- 3:37was a kind of theft, that the man would use the
- 3:40girl's gift to sell cheap, fast things and discard
- 3:43her in three years with her name spent and her
- 3:46hands never properly trained. Saloni knew all
- 3:50of that, knew it the way she knows the bias of
- 3:53a cloth, and she did not say a word of it. Because
- 3:56she understood, having learned it from the other
- 3:59side, having been the one held in a clean room
- 4:02while she decided about the Empire, that if she
- 4:05told Terra what to do, she would rob the girl
- 4:08of the only thing that mattered, which was making
- 4:11the choice herself, in her own hands, by her
- 4:14own ear. A young maker talked out of a mistake
- 4:17by her master has not learned anything. She has
- 4:21only obeyed. And a young maker talked out of
- 4:24a true desire she actually had has been wounded,
- 4:27made smaller, taught that her own hunger is not
- 4:31to be trusted. Selene would not do either. She
- 4:35would hold the space and trust the lesson. I
- 4:38understood, watching her hold it, that this is
- 4:41the part of teaching no one sees and everyone
- 4:43underestimates, the sheer nerve it takes to stake
- 4:46a young person's future on the lesson you planted
- 4:49and then refuse to protect your investment. Anyone
- 4:53can pour knowledge into a student. The rare and
- 4:56frightening thing is to pour it in and then let
- 4:59go, to send the knowledge out to be tested by
- 5:02a choice you cannot control, to risk watching
- 5:04everything you gave get overridden in a single
- 5:07hungry afternoon by a man with white teeth. Celonie
- 5:11had given Tara an ear. Now she had to trust the
- 5:14ear, against her own terror, with no way to make
- 5:18the girl use it. That is faith. The working kind,
- 5:22the kind with skin in it. That's a real offer,
- 5:26she said carefully, giving it its full weight,
- 5:29refusing to make it small so it would be easier
- 5:32to refuse. It's exciting. It's a lot of what
- 5:36you came here wanting, speed, a name, reach,
- 5:39soon. I'm not going to tell you it's nothing.
- 5:42It isn't nothing. She looked at the girl steadily.
- 5:46I'm also not going to tell you what to do. I
- 5:50want you to tell me what to do, Tara said, almost
- 5:53desperate, and I recognized the desperation because
- 5:57it was Saloni's own, three nights into the Empire
- 6:00fortnight, point blank across our kitchen table.
- 6:04Tell me what to do. I know you do, Saloni said
- 6:08gently, and that's exactly why I won't. You don't
- 6:13need my answer. You have your own ear now. You
- 6:16found it on the ninth day. With the dull cloth.
- 6:20So use it. That's the whole test, Tara. The only
- 6:24one that matters. And it's not a test of the
- 6:27offer. It's a test of whether you can hear yourself
- 6:30over the noise of wanting. Take the offer somewhere
- 6:34quiet. Sit with it the way you sat with the cloth.
- 6:38And listen for whether it goes quiet or whether
- 6:41it just keeps talking, keeps selling itself,
- 6:44keeps needing you to be impressed. You know how
- 6:47to do this now. I taught you how to do this.
- 6:50So go and do it, and don't come back and ask
- 6:54me. Come back and tell me. She went away with
- 7:00it for two days. Saloni said nothing, made the
- 7:03workshop quiet around the girls wrestling, gave
- 7:06her exactly the conditions she had once been
- 7:09given, and went home each night, and was, I could
- 7:12see, quietly tormented by the not knowing and
- 7:16the not staring. the way I had been tormented
- 7:19across her own fortnight. It's unbearable, she
- 7:24said to me on the sofa, the second night, with
- 7:27a rueful astonishment. Now I understand what
- 7:31you went through. You wanted to put your thumb
- 7:33on it so badly, didn't you? Every minute. Because
- 7:37you could see, you were sure you could see which
- 7:40way was true, and you had to just sit on your
- 7:42hands and let me find it myself on no evidence
- 7:45with no help at the risk that I'd choose the
- 7:48thing you were sure was wrong. She shook her
- 7:51head. I'm doing it now, and it's the hardest
- 7:55thing. I could lose her. She could take the fast,
- 7:59bright thing and burn out in three years, and
- 8:02I'll have watched it coming and said nothing.
- 8:04And I still can't say anything, because the saying
- 8:08would ruin the only thing worth giving her. God.
- 8:11You did this for two weeks. For me. I don't think
- 8:15I ever fully understood the size of it until
- 8:18now, doing it myself for her. It's the size of
- 8:23love that doesn't make itself the center, I said.
- 8:27You taught me that, actually. By doing it back.
- 8:30Took us a while to get here. where we can each
- 8:34give the other the clean room. Now you're giving
- 8:37it to a third person. That's the whole thing
- 8:40spreading. Tara came back on the third day, and
- 8:45she had been crying, and she had decided, and
- 8:48she told it to Celonie in the workshop with me
- 8:50at the Edge, and I have it nearly word for word
- 8:53because it was, in its small way, one of the
- 8:55most moving things I have witnessed a young person
- 8:58taught to hear hearing. There is a specific beauty
- 9:01in watching someone use, for the first time and
- 9:04entirely on their own, a capacity you watch them
- 9:08acquire, like seeing a child who learned to swim
- 9:11in the shallows strike out, unaided, across deep
- 9:14water. Terra had learned to listen to a dull
- 9:17cloth in a quiet room with her master nearby.
- 9:20Now she had taken the listening out into the
- 9:23loud world, alone, and pointed it at the brightest,
- 9:27fastest, Most seductive thing that world had
- 9:30ever offered her, and it had worked. The ear
- 9:33had held. She had heard the true under the noise
- 9:36with no one standing beside her to confirm it.
- 9:39That is the moment a lesson stops being the teacher's
- 9:43and becomes the student's. I was watching it
- 9:46happen, and I have rarely felt more privileged
- 9:49to be standing at the edge of a room. It keeps
- 9:53talking, she said. The offer. I did what you
- 9:57said. I took it somewhere quiet and I sat with
- 10:00it the way I sat with the cloth and I listened
- 10:03for it to go quiet the way the cloth went quiet
- 10:05on the ninth day and it never did. It just keeps
- 10:09selling itself. It keeps showing me the followers
- 10:12and the launch and the speed and how everyone
- 10:15would finally know my name. It's so loud. And
- 10:19I finally heard that the loudness is the answer.
- 10:23That if it were true for me, it would have gone
- 10:25quiet by now. And it hasn't. It's still shouting.
- 10:28And the shouting means it's the bright, fast,
- 10:31empty thing. And not the true thing. At least
- 10:34not the true thing for me. She wiped her face.
- 10:38I'm not taking it. I'm staying. I'm going to
- 10:41do the slow apprenticeship and learn my hands
- 10:44properly and probably watch three people I trained
- 10:47with become famous before I finish learning to
- 10:49cut. And it's going to be hard. And I'm choosing
- 10:53it anyway because I listened and the slow true
- 10:55thing went quiet and the fast bright thing wouldn't
- 10:58shut up. And you taught me that's how you know.
- 11:02And then she said the thing that told me the
- 11:04lesson had gone all the way down, the thing that
- 11:07made it hers and not Selene's, the thing with
- 11:10the grief in it that made it true. But I want
- 11:14you to know I'm grieving it, the fast version,
- 11:16the me who took it and got famous fast. She's
- 11:20not nothing, that girl, and I'm never going to
- 11:24be her now, and a part of me is always going
- 11:27to wonder. I'm not staying because I'm above
- 11:30wanting the bright thing. I wanted it with my
- 11:33whole chest. I'm staying because of my hands.
- 11:38Same as you. She looked at Celoni and something
- 11:42passed between them. The thing that passes between
- 11:45a teacher and a student at the exact moment the
- 11:48student stops being a student. I finally get
- 11:51what you meant. About the no. It was never about
- 11:55being pure. It was about knowing your own shape
- 11:58and being brave enough to be it even while you're
- 12:01grieving all the other shapes you'll never get
- 12:03to be. Saloni did not gush. She gave Tara the
- 12:10thing she had learned to give instead of gushing.
- 12:13She let the girl see that she was seen exactly
- 12:16at the exact moment it mattered. It is the thing
- 12:19Saloni does better than anyone I have known,
- 12:22and it took me years to even recognize it as
- 12:25a thing because it is so quiet and asks so little
- 12:28attention to itself. Most of us, faced with another
- 12:32person's hard -won triumph, respond by making
- 12:35some noise about it. Praise, congratulation,
- 12:39a performance of being impressed, all of which
- 12:42subtly recontrae the moment on the responder.
- 12:45Saloni does the opposite. She goes still. And
- 12:49she lets the person feel the full weight of being
- 12:51accurately seen, and she adds nothing because
- 12:55anything added would be for herself. To be witnessed
- 12:58like that, precisely and without performance,
- 13:01at the moment you have done a hard true thing,
- 13:04is one of the rarest gifts one person can give
- 13:07another. I have received it. I watch Tara receive
- 13:11it now. And then she said, now you're a maker.
- 13:15Not because you can cut, you'll learn that. Because
- 13:18you can hear, and you can grieve the road you
- 13:21don't take. And you can stay anyway. That's the
- 13:24whole of it. Everything from here is just ours.
- 13:29That night, Saloni was lit from inside in a way
- 13:32I had rarely seen. The pride with no self burning,
- 13:36quiet and bright. And she said, she heard it.
- 13:40On her own. I didn't tell her. I held the room,
- 13:45and she heard it herself. And then, softer, the
- 13:48wonder in it. She used my own test on me. In
- 13:52a way, used the thing I gave her to make a choice
- 13:56I wanted her to make but couldn't ask for. And
- 13:59the not asking is the only reason the choice
- 14:01is real. If I told her to stay, she'd have stayed
- 14:05for me and resented me by 30 and left at 40 for
- 14:10the fast thing she never got to refuse for herself.
- 14:13Instead, she refused it with her own ear, and
- 14:17now it's hers, the refusal, hers forever, and
- 14:21she'll never wonder whether she only stayed because
- 14:24I made her. That's the gift. That's what you
- 14:27gave me. I finally got to give it to someone
- 14:30else. That's how it works, I said. That's the
- 14:36whole lineage, not just the cutting. The clean
- 14:39room. You hand down the craft and you hand down
- 14:43the way of being trusted to choose it. She'll
- 14:45give it to someone too, someday. The thumb off
- 14:48the scale, pass down a line of people, each of
- 14:52them getting to find their own shape because
- 14:54the one before them refused to choose it for
- 14:57them. I wrote it in the fifth notebook that night.
- 15:03The apprentice kept the lesson proven. The gift
- 15:07spreading outward past us into a future we won't
- 15:10see. The hunger. Came back for Tara in summer.
- 15:15A man with white teeth and a fast plan. One of
- 15:19the new bright fast labels. A drop. A launch.
- 15:22A viral moment. Will make you a star? Offering
- 15:26the thing her hunger starved for. Speed. A name
- 15:29now. Skip the apprenticeship. Celonies turn at
- 15:33the thumb off the scale. The exact gift the narrator
- 15:37gave her across the Empire fortnight. The loudest
- 15:40love I'd ever been given. She does not tell Terra
- 15:44not to take it, though every instinct screams
- 15:46it's a beautiful, fast emptiness slash a trap.
- 15:50If I tell her, I rob her of the only thing that
- 15:54matters, making the choice herself. A maker talked
- 15:57out of a mistake hasn't learned, only obeyed.
- 16:00A maker talked out of a true desire is wounded.
- 16:04Taught her own hunger isn't to be trusted. Gives
- 16:08it full weight. That's a real offer. It isn't
- 16:11nothing. Then I'm also not going to tell you
- 16:13what to do. Tara, desperate. I want you to tell
- 16:17me what to do. Equals Saloni's own line across
- 16:20the kitchen, table three nights into the empire.
- 16:24Saloni, that's exactly why I want. You have your
- 16:28own ear now. You found it on the ninth day. Take
- 16:32the offer somewhere quiet. Sit with it like the
- 16:35cloth. Listen for whether it goes quiet or keeps
- 16:39talking. Don't come back and ask me. Come back
- 16:42and tell me. She wrestles two days, Saloni quietly
- 16:47tormented by the not staring. Now I understand
- 16:50what you went through. I could lose her and still
- 16:54can't say anything because the saying would ruin
- 16:56the only thing worth giving her. You did this
- 16:59for two weeks for me. Narrator. It's the size
- 17:03of love that doesn't make itself the center.
- 17:06You taught me by doing it back. Now you're giving
- 17:09it to a third person. The whole thing's spreading.
- 17:13Tara comes back day three, crying, decided. It
- 17:16keeps talking. I listen for it to go quiet like
- 17:19the cloth on the ninth day, and it never did.
- 17:22It just keeps selling itself. The followers slash
- 17:25the launch slash the speed. The loudness is the
- 17:29answer. If it were true for me, it'd have gone
- 17:32quiet. And it hasn't. I'm not taking it. I'm
- 17:35staying. Going to do the slow apprenticeship
- 17:38and watch people I trained with get famous first.
- 17:41And choosing it anyway. The grief makes it her
- 17:45slash true. I'm grieving it. The me who took
- 17:48it and got famous fast. She's not nothing and
- 17:51I'll never be her and part of me will always
- 17:54wonder. I'm not staying because I'm above wanting
- 17:57the bright thing. I wanted it with my whole chest.
- 18:00I'm staying because of my hands, same as you.
- 18:03I finally get what you meant about the no. It
- 18:06was never about being pure. It was knowing your
- 18:09own shape and being brave enough to be it even
- 18:12while grieving all the shapes you'll never get
- 18:14to be. Seloni, no gush. Let's her be seen. Now
- 18:19you're a maker. Not because you can cut. You'll
- 18:22learn that. But because you can hear and grieve
- 18:25the road you don't take and stay anyway. Everything
- 18:29from here is just ours. That night Seloni lit
- 18:33with a pride with no self. She heard it on her
- 18:36own. I held the room and she heard it herself.
- 18:40If I'd told her to stay, she'd have stayed for
- 18:42me and resented me by 30 and left at 40 for the
- 18:46fast thing. She never got to refuse for herself.
- 18:49Instead, she refused it with her own ear, and
- 18:53it's hers forever. That's the gift, what you
- 18:56gave me. I finally got to give it to someone
- 18:59else. Narrator, that's the whole lineage, not
- 19:03just the cutting, the clean room. You hand down
- 19:06the craft and the way of being trusted to choose
- 19:09it. The thumb off the scale passed down a line
- 19:12of people, each getting to find their own shape
- 19:15because the one before refused to choose it for
- 19:18them. To be continued in episode 50, The Gray
