- 0:00Hey, welcome to the hall hotline. I am your guest
- 0:04host Paul filling in for John while he's a while
- 0:06he's away over the next couple of days or weeks
- 0:09Welcome back to day two of me filling in on our
- 0:13biblical manhood podcast series If you remember
- 0:16last time in day one we took a deep dive into
- 0:19the early church We look specifically at men
- 0:22like polycarp who you know, they stood before
- 0:24the proconsul at Smyrna He faced a flame with
- 0:28an unshakable conviction. A polycarp, he refused
- 0:32to bow to the empire because his soul was anchored
- 0:35in an uncompromising devotion to Jesus Christ.
- 0:38And that kind of unshakable conviction, it's
- 0:41essential for every Christian man. But here's
- 0:44the critical truth, guys, we have to face today.
- 0:47Conviction in your heart, it can't survive long
- 0:50if you're standing alone in the dark. And today
- 0:52we're addressing that quiet epidemic facing Christian
- 0:56men across the globe and that's male isolation.
- 0:59Look around at modern culture. On paper, men
- 1:03have never been connected, never been more connected.
- 1:06We have group chats, social media followers,
- 1:10sports buddies, our work colleagues. It's not
- 1:13something that I'm into, but fantasy football
- 1:15leagues and yet under the surface, we have millions
- 1:18of men. They're dying of spiritual loneliness.
- 1:22We have plenty of acquaintances, but really no
- 1:25allies. We have people to watch the game with,
- 1:28but no one to confess our struggles to. And when
- 1:30life hits us hard and it will, and when temptation
- 1:33strikes, and when our marriages hit walls, or
- 1:37when doubt starts to creep in, what do most men
- 1:40do? We retreat into our own heads. And isolated
- 1:43men, they're vulnerable men. And Satan, he wants
- 1:47to keep us isolated and pick us off one at a
- 1:50time. And to really understand the root of isolation,
- 1:55let's look at what King Solomon has to say in
- 1:58the book of Ecclesiastes. This is considered
- 2:01the wisest man that ever lived. And let's see
- 2:05what he has to say about this. In the first three
- 2:07chapters of Ecclesiastes, Solomon goes on this
- 2:11search for meaning. And he looks at the pain.
- 2:14He looks at injustice in the world. He looks
- 2:16at extreme vanity of life under the sun. He looks
- 2:19at wealth. pleasure, labor, he looks at philosophy.
- 2:24And what does he come up with? Okay, he comes
- 2:26up with that without God, it's all chasing after
- 2:29a wind, which means it leads to nothing. You
- 2:33know, remember, like I just said, King Solomon,
- 2:35he's a man who has every material possession
- 2:38he could possibly dream of, you know, and then
- 2:41he shifts in chapters four through eight, he
- 2:43turns Solomon turns his attention to people and
- 2:47And basically what type of people he observes.
- 2:50And he sees in Ecclesiastes chapter 4 verse 4
- 2:53through 8, it's heartbreakingly modern, guys.
- 2:58He sees men motivated by envy, men driven by
- 3:01endless work. And worst of all, he sees the isolated
- 3:04overachiever. He says, there was a man all alone.
- 3:09He had neither son nor brother. There was no
- 3:12end to his toil. Yet his eyes were not content
- 3:14with his wealth. For who am I toiling?" he asked.
- 3:18And why am I depriving myself of enjoyment? This
- 3:21too is meaningless, a miserable business. And
- 3:24again, that's Ecclesiastes chapter 4 verse 8.
- 3:27And Solomon, he spots the man who works 80 hours
- 3:33a week. He builds an empire. He accumulates assets,
- 3:36but he's standing completely alone. He has no
- 3:39real heir. He has no true companion. No one to
- 3:42share his soul with. Solomon calls this a miserable
- 3:45business. Isolation makes even success taste
- 3:50bitter. But Solomon doesn't leave us in despair
- 3:56or isolation. Immediately after he describes
- 3:58this lone man, he writes one of the most powerful
- 4:02messages on brotherhood in the entire Old Testament.
- 4:05So if we look at Ecclesiastes, Ecclesiastes chapter
- 4:094 verse 9 through 12. Let's break down the four
- 4:12key advantages that Solomon lists in this passage.
- 4:16The first one in verse 9 is that shared labor.
- 4:19He says two are better than one because they
- 4:22have a good return for their labor. When men
- 4:24link arms in kingdom purposes, their output,
- 4:28and their efficiency doubles. That's a no -brainer.
- 4:32If you got two people working on one project,
- 4:35you're gonna get it done twice as fast. Two people
- 4:37can get twice as much done, okay? Let's look
- 4:40at verse 10 about what he says about mutual restoration.
- 4:43If either of them falls down, one can help the
- 4:46other up, but pity anyone who falls and has no
- 4:49one to help them up. You know, in the ancient
- 4:51world, if you were walking alone at night, if
- 4:53you fell in a pit or broke your leg, you died.
- 4:57You know, a wild animal would come along, robbers
- 5:00or bandits would come along. In our spiritual
- 5:03life, if you fall into sin or despair while you're
- 5:05walking alone, you stay down, guys. There's no
- 5:09one there set up as guardrails. When we have
- 5:14friends, spiritual friends who can help guide
- 5:18us, who can kind of bump us along the right path
- 5:21before things get out of control, this helps
- 5:25instead of going at it alone. And that's, again,
- 5:27why Satan wants to alienate us. Our sin, little
- 5:32by little, well, it's no big deal. There's nobody
- 5:34checking us. Eventually it grows into something
- 5:36huge. Nobody sets off to rob a bank just one
- 5:41day. That builds over time. One small thing leads
- 5:44to a bigger thing leads to another thing. In
- 5:47verse 11, let's talk about comfort and protection
- 5:50from the cold. It says, also, if two lie down
- 5:52together, they will keep warm. But how can one
- 5:55keep warm alone? And I think if we look at this
- 5:58in spiritual terms, When the cold winds blow,
- 6:05men need each other. They need each other for
- 6:08spiritual comfort, for spiritual guidance. And
- 6:12then in verse 12, we're talking about defending
- 6:14against adversary. Though one may be overpowered,
- 6:19two can defend themselves. And then a quart of
- 6:21three strands is not quickly broken. Now you're
- 6:24gonna say, Paul, what are you talking about here?
- 6:25I understand two strands is strong. What are
- 6:30we talking about three strands? Well, a single
- 6:32thread, right? It can snap easily. Easy to visualize
- 6:37that. Two threads woven together, that is stronger.
- 6:41But when there's three strands are braided together,
- 6:44they're capable. That becomes a very strong cord.
- 6:48And it's capable of hoisting immense weight.
- 6:51And in Christian Brotherhood, those three strands,
- 6:54they represent you. They represent your brother.
- 6:57And then the third strand is the presence of
- 6:59Jesus Christ and he's bound between you, okay?
- 7:02So holding that that chord together, okay? You
- 7:06know and this dynamic of Tight -knit Brotherhood
- 7:10it wasn't just a wisdom text for Solomon. It
- 7:13was a survival guide necessary for the early
- 7:16church necessary for today and yesterday or the
- 7:19day before we talked about polycarp and what
- 7:23he faced under Roman persecution under various
- 7:27emperors. And how did the early Christians, how
- 7:29they endure under such severe brutality? They
- 7:33survived because like the ancient Greek and Roman
- 7:36military phalanx, they lived like that. okay
- 7:41in a phalanx formation you know heavy infantry
- 7:44soldiers they stood shoulder to shoulder i used
- 7:46this example last time holding large shields
- 7:49um with their left arm and that meant that shields
- 7:52didn't just protect the the own person's soldier
- 7:55the own soldier's torso it overlapped to cover
- 7:58the right side of the man standing to his left
- 8:00and think about that okay a warrior in a phalanx
- 8:03he was literally dependent on his brother for
- 8:06his life so if the man beside you dropped his
- 8:08shield said Guess what I'm out of here, you know
- 8:11if you fled in fear that hole opened up in the
- 8:14shield wall The whole unit was compromised and
- 8:17the shield wall was only as strong as the man
- 8:19standing beside you So when the emperor Roman
- 8:22emperor Roman Empire conducted persecution against
- 8:25the early church Christians they didn't scatter
- 8:28into isolation if they did they would have been
- 8:30picked off Okay, they gathered in house churches.
- 8:33They shared things they prayed for one another
- 8:35together in their homes and in prison cells and
- 8:39rooted their faith in Christ, being mutually
- 8:41supported by one another. Almost like we could
- 8:44relate that to a spiritual shield wall, us relying
- 8:47on one another to protect our flank. And let's
- 8:52talk about your life right now in 2026. OK, that's
- 8:56great, Paul, but how does this help me? OK, let's
- 8:58look at two questions. The first one is, who
- 9:01is in your tribe? Who's standing in your shield
- 9:04wall, men? If you find this difficult to answer,
- 9:07you're not alone. Most of us struggle with this,
- 9:10but here's some suggestions. And we have to move
- 9:12past that superficial friendship. The guys you
- 9:16talk sports with, the colleagues you grab lunch
- 9:19with, the men you wave to in the church foyer.
- 9:23These are okay. And I'm not saying don't be polite
- 9:25and don't stop waving to people. Just don't be
- 9:28weird. Don't be that weird Christian guy, but
- 9:31you need two specific type of men in your life,
- 9:35guys. You need a foxhole brother. Again, I use
- 9:38a lot of military visualization here. You can
- 9:43see from behind me, I spent some time in the
- 9:45military, so it comes easy to me, but I think
- 9:47it also comes easy to guys who played sports
- 9:49and just men in general. In warfare, a foxhole
- 9:55is where you dive into when artillery starts
- 9:57to fall. A foxhole brother, he's the guy behind
- 10:00you. He stays in a trench with you when that
- 10:04spiritual artillery is pounding your life. He
- 10:06knows your deepest struggles. He knows your temptations,
- 10:09your financial stresses, and your marriage battles.
- 10:12He doesn't judge you. He guards your back, and
- 10:15he prays you through the night. I am going to
- 10:18give you a word of caution here. Be careful.
- 10:20Be discerning. Not everybody has their best intention
- 10:25when it comes to you. You need to develop relationships
- 10:29with people. They need to take time. You can't
- 10:31force it. Trust is built over over time. Okay,
- 10:37and then the mat carrier so in Mark chapter 2
- 10:41We read the story of four men who had a paralyzed
- 10:43friend and they wanted to get him the Jesus But
- 10:46the house was packed. You know Jesus is there.
- 10:49He's speaking. Everybody wants to get in to see
- 10:51him I Don't even like saying this but it's like
- 10:54a rock concert where everybody's piled in at
- 10:56a front row and you're trying to get up close
- 10:58to see your band not the same thing, but you
- 11:01get what I'm talking about, okay? What did the
- 11:04friends do, okay? They picked up his mat, they
- 11:06carried him to the roof, they dug a hole in the
- 11:09ceiling, they lowered him down right to the feet
- 11:11of Jesus. And that man was healed because he
- 11:14had four friends who refused to let his paralysis
- 11:16stop him from reaching Christ. And as a mat carrier,
- 11:20a mat carrier is your spiritual brother who,
- 11:23when you're too exhausted or weak or discouraged
- 11:25to pray or continue on, They carry you to Jesus
- 11:28on the mat of their own faith. And as we wrap
- 11:33up day two of this series, I just want to leave
- 11:36you with two crucial reflection questions. The
- 11:43first being, how can you benefit today from having
- 11:47a foxhole brother or a mat carrier? A spiritual
- 11:50brother you can share real life with. Somebody
- 11:52you can confess sin to you know and rely on for
- 11:55accountability So, you know, how would a person
- 11:58like that in your life be able to be a benefit
- 12:00to you? And then the second thing I want to leave
- 12:03you with is whose mat carrier are you called
- 12:06to be right now? You know, who do you know that's
- 12:08suffering by stress? Sin isolation or someone
- 12:12that needs you to help lift his mat and bring
- 12:15him to Jesus, you know Guys this all these relationships
- 12:20take time. It takes time to develop trust It
- 12:23takes time for someone to trust you to tell them
- 12:25that they'll tell you things that are going on
- 12:28Okay, but don't leave this episode today without
- 12:30taking action God he never created you to fight
- 12:34the battle of bandwidth alone. Okay, Satan isolates
- 12:37men so he can destroy men break the silence reach
- 12:41out to a brother today Text him grab coffee begin
- 12:45building that three -strand cord. Join us next
- 12:48time for day three as we continue to build foundations
- 12:51of biblical manhood. We'll continue to look at
- 12:54the early church. Until then, stay strong, stay
- 12:57connected, stay firm in the faith. And guys,
- 13:01remember what John always says, do it because
- 13:03it's the hallway. All right, have a good one.
