- 0:00Welcome to the Western show. You continue to talk like you're
- 0:05talking right now. You'll be history on this
- 0:07program. Cooler show.
- 0:12Nobody eats beefaroni on a boat, man.
- 0:14That's a problem. Yokozuna blew.
- 0:21My. Mind.
- 0:29Let's do. Something let's go.
- 0:38I've got under your skin. I'm ready for this.
- 0:39Episode now, Yeah. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome
- 0:50back to the Extra Cooler show. My name is Nick, otherwise known
- 0:52as Extra Cooler. This week it's me, Michael
- 0:55Workrate and the Hop. God, sorry.
- 1:00He liked my paws there. I wanted to leave everybody on
- 1:03the edge of their seat. I thought you froze for a
- 1:05second, but it's it's it's it's kind of officially back to
- 1:09Maddie Light in these days, but that's OK, That's all right.
- 1:11That's. All right, you still got
- 1:12something in the cooler here and there every once in a while, so
- 1:15that's all that matters. I promise.
- 1:17For those of you that love Stu Hart, Jim is still a part of
- 1:20this show. He just decided to take this
- 1:22week off once again. He's Yeah, he's he's taking it
- 1:27easy. Taking it easy.
- 1:28Is it because of what we're covering?
- 1:31Really what that what it boils down to.
- 1:34So as usual, you can find us over on Instagram at Extra
- 1:37Cooler and join us over on our Discord channel, which you can
- 1:40find in the show notes. Thank you guys again for
- 1:43listening to our podcast. Like I said last episode,
- 1:47there's a ton of wrestling content out there.
- 1:49We appreciate you guys choosing the Extra Cooler show and
- 1:53listening to us for the the hour or so.
- 1:56Hell yeah, there were quite a lot of you last week too.
- 1:58So for any of the new listeners that have joined and are back
- 2:01for their second week in a row, welcome back.
- 2:04This is kind of more along the lines of what the what you're
- 2:07going to get at the Extra Cooler show with some homework
- 2:10episodes, as we like to call them.
- 2:11And thank you for all those who have stuck with us throughout
- 2:15and are here. So yeah, last week was pretty
- 2:18fun, so thanks boys. So this week we are, we have no
- 2:22housekeeping because the last episode we recapped WrestleMania
- 2:2641. But this week we're getting you
- 2:28guys ready for Backlash in a little bit of a different way.
- 2:31And our match of the week is Randy Orton versus John Cena in
- 2:36an I Quit match from Breaking Point 2009.
- 2:40In anyone that watched Monday Night Raw this week, they
- 2:43actually did a feature on this match, which was pretty cool.
- 2:46And obviously the last two weeks right after Mania and then, you
- 2:50know this week as well, they're really building up to this Randy
- 2:52Orton and John Cena match at Backlash 2025.
- 2:56And yeah, they, they put a whole feature on it.
- 2:59They had Sam Roberts, they had Peter Rosenberg.
- 3:03Holy, Foley and Shawn Michaels all had things to say about this
- 3:07match. So I really like what they're
- 3:08doing with this kind of build up, visiting some old, old
- 3:12matches and building that nostalgia and really pushing
- 3:14people to the network or to Peacock or whatever you want to
- 3:17call it. So I, I like this move, WWE,
- 3:19keep it up. Agreed.
- 3:20And and I mean, they're, they're kind of like biting off our
- 3:23stick here, but it's OK, I guess.
- 3:26No, but but in all seriousness, it it's a really cool thing,
- 3:30especially when you think about the fact that what we're
- 3:32covering was from 2009 and we're in 2025.
- 3:36So it's a long time. And when you hit play on
- 3:40Breaking Point 2009, it it makes all the sense, especially when
- 3:44you turn on this match or when you see highlights from this
- 3:47match based on the way that the two men look in 2009.
- 3:52So before we dive into our main event, let's talk about what's
- 3:56on this card. So take a step back.
- 3:58Breaking Point takes place on September 13th, 2009 from the
- 4:02Bell Center in Montreal, QC. It's the only breaking point
- 4:06there ever was. Yeah, yes.
- 4:07So this, this was ready. There's some, there's some back
- 4:11story on this on the Wikipedia page.
- 4:14So take it for what it's worth, but it was a one off event at
- 4:17the September slot used to be held by night or I'm sorry,
- 4:21after this night of champions took over, but before this, I
- 4:28don't even remember what there was Unforgiven I think.
- 4:31And so for this one, they actually polled fans and let
- 4:38them vote. So already listen to the choices
- 4:40that they had, right? They they ended up with breaking
- 4:43point. Their other choices were
- 4:46submission Sunday, total submission and submit and quit.
- 4:51All sound like dog shit to me so.
- 4:54I was about to say this. Yeah.
- 4:56Exactly. It's all dog shit.
- 4:58It's like, all right, which one's?
- 4:59Which one's the worst breaking point?
- 5:01I guess you can say maybe the best of them.
- 5:03Submission Sunday. I don't know about that one.
- 5:09No, it was no real. Competition there, it was always
- 5:13going to be breaking point so. Here's the the my gripe with it,
- 5:16right? I turned on the pay-per-view.
- 5:18I hit play and I watched the video package in the beginning
- 5:22and I'm like, oh, you know what? Like, OK, so let, I'm sorry, let
- 5:25me rewind 2009. We've said it before.
- 5:28None of us are watching WWE on an active basis.
- 5:32Maybe we're popping in for a Rumble.
- 5:33Maybe we're popping in for WrestleMania, you know, or if
- 5:36it's on, we're flicking through. But none of us have any clue
- 5:39what's going on, so here we are, breaking point.
- 5:43I hit play and I'm like, oh you know what?
- 5:45This is actually a cool premise. Every match has to end in a
- 5:48submission. Nope, not the case.
- 5:52Not cool. Definitely not cool to.
- 5:54Me. That's how the pay-per-view is
- 5:56billed. That every match was going to
- 5:58end in a submission. Not the case.
- 6:01I think there's only. Like only the main 1 I think.
- 6:04Yeah, the three, the three big matches on this card are
- 6:07submission matches. The rest are just singles
- 6:09matches and tag team matches. So it's an interesting concept,
- 6:13but they really should have done a little bit more with it if
- 6:16you're going to build it that. Way they should have had every
- 6:18match ends in a drop to hold or something.
- 6:22It's tough for me as we get through the card like a lot of
- 6:25these matches just don't seem to fit a, you know, submission
- 6:29match. If you will like there there's
- 6:31the big match is before this is legacy and DX.
- 6:35Like no, all right, fine, the $1,000,000 dream, I guess.
- 6:38But like Triple H and Shawn Michaels aren't necessarily
- 6:42submission wrestlers. Like it just doesn't feel like
- 6:45it really fits, you know, Randy Orton and Cena, OK, fine, we
- 6:50Cena has his submission and then the main event is CM Punk and
- 6:54the Undertaker. And like, I know that there was
- 6:56a whole storyline along with it and specifically with the with
- 7:01that triangle hold that the undertaker does that I the name
- 7:05is escaping me at the moment. But like, let me just thank you.
- 7:09None of these things really feel like.
- 7:11A. Fitting of the competitors in
- 7:13the match and it was just, I don't know, it felt disjointed
- 7:16to me as a whole concept. Yeah, it it's also interesting
- 7:21too, because when you're watching it, you have to
- 7:24remember that there's Raw, there's Smack Down, and there's
- 7:30the ECW brand being billed on this pay-per-view.
- 7:34So let's just just dive right in, right?
- 7:37Our first match of the night is Jerry Show, Chris Jericho and
- 7:41Big Show defeating the World's Strongest Tag Team.
- 7:45Spoiler alert, I had no clue they were ever A tag team MVP
- 7:50and Mark Henry. And this is A tag team match for
- 7:53the Unified WWE Tag Team Champions. the Champions win the
- 7:58match in 12 minutes. I.
- 8:01I dug their theme music, Jerry. I was.
- 8:04Yes, I remember that. Yes, that was that was the
- 8:06highlight of the match if you ask me.
- 8:08Yes, yes, not not not Big Show looking like baby New Year.
- 8:15Nope, that was that was not not for me.
- 8:18I think really do enjoy Perico, but like this this match was
- 8:22kind of. When you think about it, here's
- 8:25the here to me is probably one of the craziest parts about this
- 8:30card. As I run through the list of
- 8:33these guys, it's kind of wild that they are all in WWE,
- 8:39whether they've been there for a while or whether they last from
- 8:432009 to the current day, right? You've got like, like Chris
- 8:48Jericho and Big Show have been around forever at this point.
- 8:52MVP and Mark Henry been around forever.
- 8:55Well, MVP was a little bit more of a newer face to in WWE, not a
- 8:58guy we knew, but he's still actively in wrestling and
- 9:02involved in wrestling, right. Our next match is Kofi, who is
- 9:06the United States champion and he's defeating The Miz by
- 9:10pinfall in a 12 minute match. Yeah, yeah, not bad.
- 9:17I think this is fedora wearing Miz era, so you know how I feel
- 9:21about that. But then like really the only
- 9:25there's two people on this who really, I don't know, didn't
- 9:29linger as much as they could have or should have.
- 9:31And that's in our next match. It's legacy versus DX, which you
- 9:36know, Ted Dibiase junior and great, great Khali is in there.
- 9:41You know, it's, it's an interesting card, but let's go
- 9:44back. So our our third match of the
- 9:46card is legacy facing off against DX.
- 9:49So it's Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase, junior versus Triple H
- 9:52and Shawn Michaels in a submission counts Anywhere
- 9:55match. This was this was interesting.
- 9:59I I feel like it's it was very strange.
- 10:03I think to put this submissions and a false count anywhere match
- 10:06like together. But like Mike said, like, OK,
- 10:09all right, we can get here and the chaos that I usually enjoy
- 10:13in my matches and you know, thinking about a Street Fighter,
- 10:16thinking about a false count anywhere like sign me up any any
- 10:19day. But having it work with the
- 10:21submissions it it got interesting throughout.
- 10:23But for me, I I have to put the preface out there like the DX
- 10:28army, the glow sticks. Hate, hate it.
- 10:30This is. Just not for me man.
- 10:32It's just one of those, it's one of those like it felt like such
- 10:36a looking back at it, anytime I've seen anything from it, it
- 10:40just feels very like a nostalgia act.
- 10:44Even though they were like 2 active guys who could still go
- 10:46very much and they're stuck in this that like is they're 2 main
- 10:52event guys, 2 Hall of Famers, 2 the best ever, and they're doing
- 10:57this goofy shtick that just, I don't know, it doesn't land for
- 11:00me. All about selling glow sticks
- 11:03and merch more than the character building.
- 11:06Or at least that was my take from the outside.
- 11:09Looking in at this period in time and I'm sure you're not
- 11:13surprised that I haven't gone back and really revisited a
- 11:15whole. Lot of it felt like they were.
- 11:17It was WW ES way of trying to hold on to, you know, like fans
- 11:22like us who maybe we're still watching at the time, you know,
- 11:27especially. Sorry.
- 11:29No, especially with names like, you know, Cody Rose and Ted
- 11:33Dibiase Junior in there. Oh yeah, next match.
- 11:38We're ready for the next match. It is Kane defeating the Great
- 11:41Khali in a Singapore Kane match. Pun intended.
- 11:48This match was disgusting. I want that 5 minutes back
- 11:54please. Yes.
- 11:56Did you even watch it? I had it on in the background as
- 11:59I was taking notes and I'll I'll, I'll get to why I had it
- 12:03on and it was on in the background.
- 12:05I'll get to that later. But our next match is.
- 12:07Christian, that's is funny to me at least.
- 12:10You know, like Mike said, unintended, but Kane wins with a
- 12:13awful, awful chokeslam. Cause yeah.
- 12:16How's he going to chokeslam a guy taller than him?
- 12:18He's working with the Great Khali.
- 12:19I mean, like how, how is he gonna take a bump even to begin
- 12:22with, which I guess it was a time and place.
- 12:25He kind of had to be there. Yeah, I felt like a.
- 12:28Lot of it was so. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:30How high could he get off the ground?
- 12:33Can't even like, slide a feather underneath him.
- 12:36You got Christian in our next match, the ECW champion facing
- 12:41off against William Regal. And as I was saying to the guys,
- 12:45this feels like a match from like, you know, the WrestleMania
- 12:4817 era. Maybe it was, I don't know,
- 12:51like, but it just felt, I don't know, I didn't watch, not not
- 12:56interested. I feel like the whole WWECW time
- 13:00period is just a mind bend for. Me 100%.
- 13:04Blur man, and they have the different title at this point in
- 13:08time, the like I mean the title kind of looks cool at the end of
- 13:11the day. Like I don't dis I don't dislike
- 13:13it, but it just has this watered down.
- 13:16This is an ECW vibe to everything that it is here.
- 13:20But this match was actually really good in my opinion.
- 13:23I enjoyed having it on while I was doing some other things, but
- 13:27the crowd was just completely, completely out of this match.
- 13:31They didn't seem to care in any way, shape or form.
- 13:33And it's kind of a bummer when you think of these two, you
- 13:36know, all time greats with Christian and William Regal.
- 13:39Right. It just, I don't know, didn't,
- 13:42didn't hit for me. I feel like Christian is
- 13:44somebody that like, and this was his main event run.
- 13:47This was his, you know, championship run with the ECW
- 13:50title. And I don't know, it just felt
- 13:52like they still neutered him to an extent.
- 13:55And it didn't feel as important as, you know, his counterpart in
- 13:59edge, which is not always fair to, you know, compare him to to
- 14:02that exactly. But it it, it kind of hand in
- 14:05glove, right? Yeah, yeah, I, I not for me, not
- 14:09for me. Next match on the card was the
- 14:11match we're covering. So we're going to skip over
- 14:13that. We're we're going to skip over
- 14:15that and move to the main event of the night, which was CM Punk,
- 14:19who is the World Heavyweight Champion and he's defeating the
- 14:22Undertaker in a submission match.
- 14:24This is like long haired era Punk.
- 14:28Not defeating. So this was.
- 14:32Yeah, he he at the end of the day, CM Punk walks in with
- 14:35heavyweight title The Undertaker in what, like a 7 minutes in 6
- 14:40minutes into the match, Undertaker gets him to tap to
- 14:44his. Why is it escaping my mind
- 14:47again? What?
- 14:47What's the hold called? Like help me out here.
- 14:50Hell's Gate. Hell's Gate.
- 14:51All right, whatever. So he's got him in the Hell's
- 14:54Gate and he CM Punk taps and then lo and behold, we got to
- 14:59play a play a player and here comes Teddy Long saying that the
- 15:02Hell's Gate has been banned and the match must restart.
- 15:05Punk wiggles his way out of the Last Ride and locks in the
- 15:09Anaconda of Ice and reminder they're in Montreal and the bell
- 15:13rings instantly like it's it's it's called.
- 15:16Immediately it felt like they were mocking the Montreal
- 15:20Screwjob for. How many times, Vince, how many
- 15:22times did you do this over the years?
- 15:24He did it twice in this night alone.
- 15:25Because when you get to the the Legacy and the DX match, they're
- 15:30like making jokes about it before the match even begins.
- 15:33And Triple H is like, yeah, I wasn't even there.
- 15:36Like they were. They were making such a mockery
- 15:39of it throughout. Finish your night with this half
- 15:43assed attempt at a mockery of the Montreal screwjob.
- 15:48Really like set me off again of like this this period, man.
- 15:53Like it was rough for me to even go back and and look at and like
- 15:57try to rewatch even with open eyes.
- 16:00Right man. They they called DX called it a
- 16:03quote UN quote certain incident and they were having some fun
- 16:07about that. And HBK is, is blaming
- 16:10everything on Triple H and Triple H was like, I wasn't even
- 16:13there. I don't know, more slap
- 16:15slapstick stuff that I just don't want to see from, you
- 16:18know, those two. Yeah.
- 16:20No, no, thank you. No, no.
- 16:23All right. Before we dive into our main
- 16:24event, which is Randy Orton versus John Cena in an I Quit
- 16:29match, let's talk about what's in our cooler because the extra
- 16:32cooler show and what's in the cooler is brought to you by
- 16:34Sloop Brewing Company. Sloop Brewing is known for their
- 16:36hazy and golden Ipas like Juice Bomb and Super Soft.
- 16:41I had to, I had to bust out some good G4 tequila for this week.
- 16:47It is. It is a delicious kind.
- 16:49I had it. I had to bust out the good stuff
- 16:51to get me through 2009. Yeah, I get mad.
- 16:56Man, this is really a burial here, huh?
- 16:59Yeah. I know, but I'll I'll reflect
- 17:02upon it in my cans in the cooler.
- 17:05I will too. Mike, what do you got?
- 17:08Oh, I got I don't have a Stella this week.
- 17:10Oh no, no, no. Holla, holla, holla.
- 17:13No. No, I got cut water lime
- 17:17margaritas on OK. Yeah, those things are good.
- 17:21They are very good and they hit pretty heavy, I'll tell you.
- 17:24Wow, they do? What's the like percentage on
- 17:27that thing does? It have 12 1/2.
- 17:28Yeah. Oh, OK.
- 17:30I had one of those over the summer and I had to split one
- 17:32with with someone at at the poolside.
- 17:35It was like, yeah, it was like, you know, a classic like 1112
- 17:37o'clock. Like in a while, like, yeah,
- 17:40just have one out of nowhere. It's.
- 17:41Oh yeah? Oh yeah, you better drink some
- 17:43water after that bad boy. Speaking of which, you may as
- 17:48well just call me Bobby Boucher, so.
- 17:49Cheers boys, Cheers. Don't let, I let.
- 17:54Before we, I, I can't believe I didn't mention this, but before
- 17:58we get into our main event, when I was looking for a photo for
- 18:04the graphic, I thought it was pretty cool.
- 18:05There's a photo that's out there of Kevin Owens in the crowd that
- 18:10pops up during the the DX tag team match and I feel like he's
- 18:14spoken about that and being at this event before I've been
- 18:18interviews, I've heard him. So it's pretty cool to, to spot
- 18:21him out there. I'll I'll post that to our
- 18:23discord. It was very cool and he's, I'm
- 18:25fairly certain that he is competing as Kevin Steen in
- 18:282009, so. It yeah, that checks.
- 18:31Out cool to to see him there like and the the expression on
- 18:35his face isn't that of like a fan that's like super invested
- 18:39in the outcome of the match. It's more along the lines of
- 18:42like somebody that's watching and taking it all in like his
- 18:45entire atmosphere is being absorbed.
- 18:48It's not not necessarily about that.
- 18:50And that match starts out that that legacy DX match there
- 18:54again, submissions count anywhere.
- 18:57So they immediately go into the crowd and they're like walking
- 18:59up the the steps trying to lock one another into sufficient
- 19:04holds like around the banisters that are there.
- 19:06And like, it's such a weird. It's so strange, so strange.
- 19:13All right, breaking .2. 1009 Charlotte and Sasha Banks do
- 19:17that. Yes, yes, you are 100% correct.
- 19:21They had a match that was very similar in that way that they
- 19:24were trying to lock. Remember her doing the bank
- 19:26statement like Yep Yep on the railing there?
- 19:29Unless she that's how she won. Good man, I like that good
- 19:33recall. All right, breaking point 2009.
- 19:36It's September right now, so let's just backtrack a little
- 19:40bit storyline wise. At SummerSlam, Randy Orton
- 19:43defended his WWE Championship against John Cena.
- 19:46Orton intentionally gets himself disqualified and is counted out
- 19:50of the ring. This has allowed Orton to retain
- 19:53the title, but the match was repeatedly restarted.
- 19:57Eventually, Orton pinned Cena with illegal leverage.
- 20:02As as a result of Orton's actions in the match, WWE
- 20:05Chairman Mr. McMahon awarded Cena a rematch.
- 20:09Damn right, Powell. Oh God.
- 20:12In the spirit of submission concept of the show, the title
- 20:15was defended in an I quit match, a match that can only be 1,
- 20:19causing the opponent to say I quit.
- 20:22Do you guys like I quit matches? Am I going to jump?
- 20:26We're jumping the shark a little bit, but let's dive right in.
- 20:28I don't mind it as a concept. My issue is the referee shoving
- 20:34the microphone into the mouth of the person that's in a
- 20:37submission hole. Cena, do you quit?
- 20:40No, it's just like it serves me insane like if you could remove
- 20:45that part out of this match, this match style as a whole, not
- 20:49necessarily just Cena and Orton going at it in 2009, but I just
- 20:53mean even in current day, if you remove that microphone piece
- 20:57and. Just make it like tapping out
- 20:59like. Yeah.
- 21:01Whatever, I don't know something.
- 21:02And I understand it's supposed to be part of the storytelling,
- 21:05and it's supposed to be more embarrassing to actually
- 21:08vocalize that you're saying I quit, that you're you're, you
- 21:11know, tucking your tail and going home.
- 21:13But in the same breath, like, enough's enough.
- 21:15Like the The suspension of disbelief is so hard to maintain
- 21:19when you have someone shoving a microphone into their face and
- 21:23then you hear John Cena go. Supposed to be like,
- 21:26unconscious, like, yeah, no. I don't.
- 21:30And that's the other thing too. Like if you're in a submission
- 21:33hold and you're you're ready to give up, you're more likely to
- 21:38slam your hand down out of like frustration or pain than you are
- 21:42to scream, no, I quit. I quit.
- 21:46It's it just, I don't know, the presentation of it to me is
- 21:49always something that I can't stand.
- 21:52So and and other parts where it's like I'm going to give the
- 21:55guy a few punches now ask him after a few punches like get out
- 21:59of here. There's and we're, we're jumping
- 22:02right in I guess. But like Orton, it almost
- 22:05instantly gets him in the like hanging like vintage Orton as
- 22:10he's going for the hanging DDT. And before he hits the hanging
- 22:13DDT, like 3 minutes into the match, he's already asking the
- 22:17ref to ask Cena if he quits. And then of course, Cena screams
- 22:22no in the most, you know, Cena way possible.
- 22:25And then he drops them on his head.
- 22:26Like it just, that's the microcosm of the whole thing
- 22:30that like really drives me bonkers with this style of
- 22:33match. But we can, we can rewind and
- 22:35yeah. So to take a step back, Vince,
- 22:39you know, as this I quit stipulation, but then also his
- 22:42other stipulation is if anybody interferes in the match on
- 22:45Orton's behalf, Orton will be immediately stripped of the
- 22:49title. This is one of those things that
- 22:53watching the video package before and finding out that
- 22:55Vince is like Vince is on Cena's side and Vince is like a good
- 23:01guy in 2009 like and he's very anti, you know, the heel tactics
- 23:07of Randy Orton. What is going on?
- 23:09I. Can't remember if this is before
- 23:10or after he punted Vince though. I think it's, I think it's after
- 23:14he punted Vince because it's in the video package.
- 23:17All right. It's, I don't know, it's
- 23:21strange, but you want to talk about really strange, this match
- 23:25in the beginning, to me, there's two things that make me feel
- 23:29really uncomfortable. Lilian Garcia's outfit.
- 23:33Yeah, what is she wearing? A Rolling Stones shirt?
- 23:35Why? It's, it's a Rolling Stones
- 23:37shirt, but it looks like it's cut to make it look like a
- 23:40dress. And then she has like a short
- 23:42skirt and it's got rhinestones all over it.
- 23:45It's it's really and then like Bengal style, like bracelets on
- 23:51and don't get earless gloves. It's it's a very strange look
- 23:54and I wish Jim was here to actually defend his girl.
- 23:57Lillian Garcia. I I don't understand, it's not
- 24:00like The Rolling Stones are from Quebec, so what's?
- 24:05Classic like bands. Yeah.
- 24:07One of them be cool. But back to.
- 24:09What? Like what topic or something?
- 24:11What's more uncomfortable? The size of John Cena's enormous
- 24:18jorts, which these things are. Oh my God, it it's Echo, right?
- 24:26That's brand Echo on on the the buttocks.
- 24:31On the Ryan. Peaks.
- 24:32Yeah, on the pockets. The art is just on the pockets.
- 24:35So the nose is on one side and the ass of the rhino is on the
- 24:38other. But it's classic like.
- 24:41No, the shorts are, yeah, but. The shorts is the knee.
- 24:45Oh my. God, you can't even see the knee
- 24:46pads they go down to. They're like capris or like
- 24:51baggy ones at that. But that's uncomfortable.
- 24:54But then what's even more uncomfortable to me is the way
- 24:57that Randy Orton looks. He and you got to see a side by
- 25:01side of this guy compared to today because he looks like a
- 25:05different. Person see a side by side of
- 25:07this guy and GI Jane, because let me tell you, he looks like
- 25:13Demi Moore here and GI really, Does he really tell you?
- 25:19I could I could Photoshop his head onto Demi Moore's body and
- 25:24it's. He's not the manic a woman
- 25:28mannequin or something. He's just so hairless.
- 25:30It's weird. It's.
- 25:33Weird, that's what it is. He looks like like those
- 25:35hairless cats, right? In human form.
- 25:39It's kind of weird. The Knicks got a lot of drawing
- 25:42to do this. Oh my.
- 25:43God, all right. Randy Orton looking like a cat.
- 25:46I I hate ChatGPT like all those things going around the
- 25:50Internet, but I might have to use it for Randy Orton as a
- 25:54skinless cat. A hairless cat.
- 25:56Sorry. I swear them GI Jane and Randy
- 25:59Orton, 2009. Oh, it's it's spot on.
- 26:02Uncanny. You can put Orton's face on GI
- 26:05Jane's body or vice versa. I don't know which is more
- 26:08expensive. Yeah.
- 26:09I think like Matt, you when you were asking Ace about this,
- 26:15maybe this match or suggestions, I think you referred to it as
- 26:18bald Randy Orton. And it's like, that's definitely
- 26:21it. He's like, he's got no hair and
- 26:23it's uncomfortable. He said this is prime bald
- 26:26psycho Randy Orton. So thank you Acefield Retro for
- 26:30the recommendation on this one. So also I, I talked about this
- 26:35earlier and that I would go back to it after this match was over.
- 26:38I went back towards the front half the first hour.
- 26:42And This is why I ended up watching the the Singapore Cane
- 26:45match in the background was because right before it, there
- 26:48is a backstage interview with Randy Orton about this match.
- 26:52And he is like so slow and methodical about the way he's
- 26:57talking. I wish I watched this interview
- 27:00before I watched the match because it it helps add another
- 27:04layer to the feud. Oh, I loved it and I did watch
- 27:08it in, you know, I just turned the pay-per-view on and let it
- 27:10run and then pay attention when I needed to pay attention.
- 27:12And this is one of those interviews or backstage
- 27:16vignettes or whatever you want to call it that like Josh
- 27:19Matthews comes into the locker room and he sits with Randy
- 27:21Orton. And Orton, like Nick said, just
- 27:23cuts this promo that was directly out of the school of
- 27:26Jake the Snake Roberts, where the fact that it was so quiet
- 27:30and slow and the low tone that was happening with his voice
- 27:34that you had to stop and turn and watch the screen.
- 27:38It. Was awesome.
- 27:40Yeah, yeah, he's just like sitting there with this like
- 27:43blank look in his face. And like you said, the
- 27:45comparison to Jake is is perfect.
- 27:47It's spot on the. I think you hit another nail on
- 27:51the head here with not only Orton, but I guess specifically
- 27:55Orton, but Cena definitely to an extent too.
- 27:58But these two guys throughout this entire match, their facial
- 28:02expressions is everything is everything for this match and
- 28:07the storytelling and it is so top tier, top notch of what they
- 28:11can do. Emoting with their face is is
- 28:14phenomenal. And I that's something that I
- 28:16took away and I'm well sure to bring up later, but this was
- 28:19really cool. This match is one of those
- 28:21matches where you can see how the fans who were watching in
- 28:262009 and and beyond started to get frustrated with Cena right
- 28:31Like it's the what was it the the five most doom?
- 28:35He starts on like 3 minutes in 4 minutes.
- 28:38Oh, the shoulder block. It's, it's just, it's painful.
- 28:41And even he's kind of corny, like a lot.
- 28:45I mean, we know John Cena as a corny guy and I listen, I I
- 28:49don't know, I don't remember what Jim said.
- 28:52But when we pitched this match, right, we were trying to figure
- 28:56out what to cover this week and for our next week or our episode
- 28:59in two weeks. And we started throwing this out
- 29:03in preparation to backlash. And Jim was like, just be
- 29:05prepared. I'm going to like find ways to
- 29:08dump all over it because I have no interest in covering it.
- 29:10That's not the real reason he's here.
- 29:12Not here. He had family obligations and,
- 29:15you know, maybe he just decided he didn't want to cover this
- 29:17match. But but then last night when we
- 29:20were talking about it, a little bit back and forth, he's like,
- 29:22this match just reminds me of Vince playing with his action
- 29:26figures. And to me, that's all I can
- 29:29picture is this picture of Vince hovered over a ring with like,
- 29:32real life. Randy LG, NS.
- 29:34Yeah, yeah, exactly. Like big bulky dudes.
- 29:38So Speaking of big and bulky, let's go back.
- 29:40We talked about Randy Orton and how he looked and how skinny he
- 29:44looked in comparison to where he is now.
- 29:47John. Do either of you guys remember
- 29:50what weight these two were billed as?
- 29:53During the match, No I do not. If you were to take a guess, I
- 29:56guess right there. Now is billed as like close
- 29:59approaching 300. I feel like in 2025 S back then,
- 30:04no more than he was probably billed close to 250, but there's
- 30:09no way he was more than 225 the way he.
- 30:11Looks and what did what do you would where would you put Cena
- 30:14as he's being billed as? I'm guessing they billed them as
- 30:18a similar weight class. Cena was billed at 2:40 and
- 30:23Orton was billed at 2:45 for. This no way.
- 30:26Absolutely no way. Yes, Cena, it's so much more
- 30:29than Orton here. Cena looks huge.
- 30:32Cena looks. Massive.
- 30:33Oh my God, yeah, yes, even you can see it in his face too.
- 30:37Orton's got some height on him, but like literally these two
- 30:41together, he would never assume that the bigger guy weight wise
- 30:45was was Randy Orton actually. Yeah.
- 30:51So there's there's some brutal spots.
- 30:53It basically like majority of matches all Orton just
- 30:58obliterating scene basically as he gets the first thing that.
- 31:01Really, announcements are saying they're torturing him.
- 31:05Yes, yes. And to take a step back, I know
- 31:07I usually do this and I forgot to on the call because it's one
- 31:10of those stupid pay per views where they're bouncing back and
- 31:12forth between the announced boots.
- 31:15You've got Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler, and let me tell
- 31:19you, these two are a terrible pairing in my.
- 31:22Opinion I agree they were they seemed like they they didn't get
- 31:25along I. Agree.
- 31:27It felt like between the fact of them not getting along and it
- 31:31was very apparent watching this that Vince McMahon is like just
- 31:35marionetting them, just puppeteer in the back.
- 31:38And there was so much like weird transitions and like things that
- 31:42just didn't make sense in the moment.
- 31:44And Michael Cole would say something and then stop and then
- 31:47continue saying something. And it just felt so awkward
- 31:50throughout the match. And King is like completely
- 31:53feeling like he's mailing it in. Like he's not King of Latitude
- 31:56Era, but he's not, you know, I don't know.
- 31:59This is natural, you know, like, like my son, my son with some
- 32:03birthday gift cards just bought WWE2K25I haven't played a
- 32:07wrestling video game in probably like 12 years.
- 32:10Listening to Jerry Lawler on this call reminded me of like,
- 32:15the video game calling, like how they have it in 2K.
- 32:19And it's just like, like, yeah, very formula and just it, it
- 32:23just doesn't flow. It's it's not very good.
- 32:26But the things that Orton does to Cena in this match early on
- 32:31are are brutal. And I want to know how in God's
- 32:35name, right, John Cena is able to get his head squished like a
- 32:41grape on the top steel stair, right?
- 32:44He, Randy Orton, has him laid out on the steel steps on the
- 32:48outside of the ring, and he, no joke, he places his foot on his
- 32:52head and goes to stomp it like a grape.
- 32:55The man would be hospitalized. This is exactly where this bald
- 33:01headed psycho as Ace called Randy Orton here.
- 33:04This is his MO at this point and with the but he, the way that he
- 33:10is able to work and the way that he's able to make this visibly
- 33:13look to the people not only at ringside, but to the US watching
- 33:17on television is really top notch.
- 33:19And of course you know it it. You can see if you slow it down
- 33:23what he's doing, but it looks like he legitimately jumps and
- 33:26stomps directly on Cena's head, not only once, but he comes back
- 33:29and he does it a second time. And it was like springs work,
- 33:32yes. Would you say this is where John
- 33:36Cena reached his breaking point? I wish you guys all could have
- 33:44seen Maggle's facial expression because it was one of the most
- 33:50beautiful things I've seen all week.
- 33:53I. Man, I wish that I pulled and I
- 33:56should have pulled John Cena. 'S times.
- 34:00Not, no, not only, not the amount of times that he said no.
- 34:03But I guess I can go back and. Like how many times something
- 34:06Michael Cole says breaking point?
- 34:08I mean, Oh my God. There you go.
- 34:10I just wish I took the monotone. Of.
- 34:13John Cena every time that he was like in the beginning.
- 34:17At first I saw it and I was like, what?
- 34:19What? Is he reacting right every time
- 34:20Mike Keota gets in his face with the microphone?
- 34:23Do you quit John? Do you quit John?
- 34:26It's it's it's like pathetic, but at the same time he's gotten
- 34:29the crap kicked out of him. I don't, I don't know.
- 34:32It was frustrating at times and it made me realize I don't like
- 34:35I quit matches. One part I do appreciate when
- 34:39he's got him handcuffed and like around the ring post, which
- 34:43we'll I guess get to he Randy Orton.
- 34:46I appreciate he gets water and like pours it over Cena So he's
- 34:51like, you're not going to pass out and like not say I quit on
- 34:55me. I like that part.
- 34:57Right. So Randy Orton breaks out the
- 34:59long handcuffs. He handcuffs him and in a cool
- 35:01spot, he he poked him up on the steps and he then drapes that
- 35:05chain over the top turnbuckle. So Cena's like hanging there.
- 35:10He can't move, he can't get it off and he's just beating the
- 35:13crap out of him. And like Mike said, he Randy
- 35:17sees him passing out, He takes the the bottle of water and
- 35:22tosses it in his face, tells him you're not you're not going to
- 35:24pass out on me. Cena then spits the water in his
- 35:27face. We get some action still with
- 35:31Cena. I think before that or after it
- 35:33where he's getting destroyed with the Singapore cane and.
- 35:38You can see it right in the stung up there.
- 35:40Oh, you see these welts that that form on the stomach and
- 35:44it's like, OK, kudos to you guys.
- 35:45You're, you're going all out. And I know like a few years ago
- 35:52when we started this podcast and I know I, you know, we, we've
- 35:56talked on our extra credit episodes about like excessive
- 35:59blood, especially with AW, like how they used it a little bit
- 36:02too much this match. Man, if there was a little bit
- 36:05of blood, it would have really ramped it up.
- 36:08And I get it. This was this was a APG era, but
- 36:12man, it would have just dialed this match.
- 36:14That was the most we got. Just those like Mark scratching,
- 36:18yeah. Yeah, but if you think about it
- 36:21through the, you know, PG era to the ruthless aggression, and
- 36:26this is kind of like in between, right?
- 36:28Like it's kind of that midway point between the two of them.
- 36:31And like, it's really a, you know, they call it a brutal
- 36:37match. They and I was hesitating to use
- 36:39that word specifically, but that's what Michael Cole is
- 36:42selling it as. Is this what we just watched was
- 36:44this brutal match? But really in the the landscape
- 36:47of 2009, it really was like between the the head stop on the
- 36:54the bottom of the steel steps like we talked about before, and
- 36:57now the handcuffs being legitimately hung up and just
- 37:01beaten with the Singapore cane. Sure, it is what it is.
- 37:04But and then on top of it, you're you're getting these
- 37:08other spots on top and the welts that they're zooming in on and
- 37:11you're seeing these other, you know, kind of crazy spots for
- 37:14what is 2009. So in today's wrestling, and you
- 37:19know, even the wrestling of the past at 2009's point, this
- 37:23doesn't feel like much, but right when you think about it
- 37:27through those lenses actually was a.
- 37:29Pretty. No, you're right.
- 37:31There's a lot of chair shots to the head, too.
- 37:33There are there are quite a bit of chair shots to the head.
- 37:38So at at one point, right he pours the water Cena spits in in
- 37:43Orton's face. Orton then goes to hit him with
- 37:46the cane and chokes him out until finally Cena delivers a
- 37:49low blow. This is when we start to see it
- 37:51happen, right? We start to see Super Cena arise
- 37:57and Cena escapes from the ring. Post gets hit by a steel chair
- 38:01again just when we think he's going to get out of it, and now
- 38:03he's he's still handcuffed with one arm to the bottom rope
- 38:07outside the ring. Then Super Cena still one arm,
- 38:14one armed attitude adjustment to Orton and he takes the key from
- 38:18around Orton's neck. He handcuffs himself to Orton
- 38:22while handcuffed together, Cena drags Orton inside the ring.
- 38:26And then but then we get like the little tease.
- 38:29Orton goes to hits an RKO on Cena and we're like, OK, maybe
- 38:33we're not going to get this, maybe, maybe not, but the the.
- 38:39But you gotta say, I quit. The cinematic piece of this from
- 38:44here forward is really well done and I felt like this is ahead of
- 38:49its time for the way that the wrestling was being shot during
- 38:53this point because I I love the fact that Orton has the, you
- 38:58know, keys around his neck. He's got him on a necklace and
- 39:00that's, you know, what how he's been progressing throughout the
- 39:03match. And it's you know, some of it is
- 39:05to tease Cena, but the other part is that he gets to move him
- 39:08around and he's, you know, disconnecting the cuffs.
- 39:11He's moving it off of the turnbuckles and, you know,
- 39:14moving it over. And then of course, it comes
- 39:16back to backfire on him. But at the very end of this
- 39:20match here and as we move into the finish, if you allow me to
- 39:22go there, Nick, go for it. The keys are now on the close to
- 39:27the corner and Cena has locked in the STFU and Orton is just
- 39:33writhing in pain trying to get out of it.
- 39:35And you see him trying to reach over as much as you can and
- 39:39trying to get these keys to get away from the from Cena.
- 39:43And the way that it was shot from the corner looking up just
- 39:47was this dramatic, amazing visual to this match that
- 39:52really, I think brought the entire importance of the match
- 39:55up. Yes, as I was watching it.
- 39:56So I feel like this finish was really, really good.
- 39:59And, you know, eventually Orton cannot get to the keys.
- 40:06He is locked in this STFU. And he, he has to say, I quit.
- 40:10Yeah, with his one arm handcuffed.
- 40:12So it's like added beverage too. That's that's another point.
- 40:16Thank you, Mike. But like this isn't the normal
- 40:19really loose John Cena submission hold this has they're
- 40:23handcuffed together and Orton's arm is being pulled back behind
- 40:27him and he's essentially choking himself or he's being choked on
- 40:30his own arm because there's that much torque and that much
- 40:33leverage on it. But let's let's listen to the
- 40:35call and the finish here. It's almost there.
- 40:37Go for the Oh my God, let's get to the head of it.
- 40:47Randy Orton has reached his breaking point.
- 40:56Michael Cole. The Michael Cole, the Michael
- 40:59Cole of it all, to quote Matt, is disturbing.
- 41:04Siddily, it's just. Like it has a.
- 41:08Breaking point? That's why I said it before, it
- 41:11feels so. Yes.
- 41:13Oh, it has to. Be has to be scripting.
- 41:16It has to be in his ear. The entire say breaking point.
- 41:19Damn it, make sure you say breaking point.
- 41:22Any wrestling? You don't say it 10 times,
- 41:24you're fine. You hear Michael Cole's actual
- 41:29voice, but you know it's Vince. You know it's a Vince line.
- 41:32Like it's just being rammed down our throats.
- 41:36It's it's nauseating. Yes, yes.
- 41:40And then when, want to make it even more nauseating, the match
- 41:43ends and then you get John Cena. Get on the microphone.
- 41:46You have that clip too. I have it.
- 41:48I have it. So this is like after he's
- 41:50announced this. This.
- 41:51This is his. 6th championship, so keep that in mind.
- 41:54We're now at 17. This was #6 for him.
- 41:58The announcers say Cena is now a six time champion and Orton is a
- 42:02broken man. Like, all right, we're getting
- 42:04even cheesier. But all of that said and done,
- 42:07they go through all the replays. John Cena now has this spinner
- 42:10title that's no longer spinning, so it's stationary, but it's
- 42:13still is that hunk of metal on a leather strap.
- 42:16And we get this close up of John in the corner with a microphone
- 42:20and. I did not quit.
- 42:24No, he did not. No, he did not.
- 42:29Thank you, Captain Obvious. Oh man, oh man, oh man.
- 42:34It's for the kids. Yeah, I guess that's a, that's a
- 42:37lens that I didn't think of until you just said it, Mike.
- 42:40And I guess I should have, because if you look at the front
- 42:42row hardcamp, you see the, you know, adults in the middle, in
- 42:47the center of it. But if you look to the left and
- 42:49look to the right, it's nothing but kids.
- 42:52It really is nothing but kids. And there's this evil, yeah,
- 42:56there's this evil, maniacal Randy Orton, the, you know,
- 43:00devil reincarnated. And then here you are with the
- 43:03superheroes, Super Cena with the five moves of Doom.
- 43:06And it makes total sense. And the cheesiness of it and
- 43:09really making it into this comic book rather than professional
- 43:13wrestling. And it was.
- 43:16It takes a toll on us as we're sitting back and we're looking
- 43:19at it through the lenses of 2025, but maybe in 2000.
- 43:23And and nine, it's it's a different story.
- 43:25While we have our own kids now, we can appreciate that.
- 43:28Yes, that is certainly true because put this into into a
- 43:31mode where you know, it's this evil, maniacal Kevin Owens going
- 43:38up against the superhero that is Cody Rhodes and you know,
- 43:42putting that in kind of the same way, I can see the same crowd
- 43:46reaction and the same booking essentially it's.
- 43:48Amazing to see the evolution in the 16 years of like camera work
- 43:54and like what these guys have been able to figure out like
- 43:58that looked like watching this match from 2009.
- 44:01It was. There was a lot of cool spots.
- 44:03Yeah. Sorry if I could get my math.
- 44:05I'm all wrong? Oh it's perfect, just it's
- 44:08feeling old, especially with my birthday next week.
- 44:12It's it's wild, like the camera work.
- 44:15Then they sold things and these guys were able to do things, but
- 44:18now it like they have somehow figured out a way to make it
- 44:22look more brutal in 2025 like and and kudos to them.
- 44:27They're it. It's amazing.
- 44:28Let's give cans in the cooler to this match.
- 44:30I want you guys to go first. I have mine written down and I
- 44:34never write mine down. See, and I always I, I try my
- 44:38best to write them down and I usually forget, but this time I
- 44:41did and I'm going. It's too high.
- 44:44It's too high. I know, I know that my rating is
- 44:47too high. Not be a.
- 44:48Four, it's really tough for me to rate this one.
- 44:50I am going 3 1/4. I wanted that's fine.
- 44:55I feel like the way that we. Pretty much all I have.
- 44:58I feel like the way that we dumped all over this, you
- 45:00wouldn't suspect that I would sit here and give it 3 1/4, even
- 45:04teetering on 3 1/2. But I, I talked about it
- 45:07earlier, I want to be respectful to it because the selling from
- 45:11both of these guys and specifically through the facials
- 45:14like we talked about and just how they emote and how you can
- 45:17see what they're feeling throughout this match was really
- 45:21a great take away. The way that they shot, the
- 45:23angles and the way that the match looked at the end of the
- 45:26day, like Orton beating him down in this 19 minute match just
- 45:30felt like it was shorter, to be honest with you.
- 45:32It didn't feel like 19 matches, which 19 minutes, which is
- 45:35usually a good thing, but this under PG rules really takes it
- 45:41away and makes me top it down. If there was blood in any way,
- 45:45shape or form, like you guys said, I think it goes to another
- 45:47level and then we can start talking about, you know, 3 1/4,
- 45:51excuse me, 3 and 3 and 3.75 or more, you know, but here I'm
- 45:57landing at 325 and I feel like I'm being generous.
- 46:02OK. We got like.
- 46:03I I had it down like I was kept going between 3:00 and 3:00 and
- 46:09like 1/4. So that's pretty much where I
- 46:12was at. Same as you, Matt.
- 46:16I guess you, you know, it's, it's not that great.
- 46:21It's, it's a good Fina and Orton match.
- 46:24I'm trying to like go back like thinking in 2009 lens.
- 46:28You know what I mean, right? This is this is for those of you
- 46:33that are listening. You know, if you go and Google
- 46:36the feuds between these two guys, this is rated as like
- 46:40either one or it's either #1 or #2 on most people's lists.
- 46:45Yeah, it's a solid I quit match. It's it is a rock versus
- 46:49mankind, but it's definitely solid.
- 46:53Like yeah, would I go back and rewatch it maybe like.
- 46:58Yeah. I I think not much but.
- 47:01I think it's tough when you put it that way of like the rewatch
- 47:05ability of it, like I'm glad I watched it.
- 47:07But at the end of the day, like, all right, yeah, I saw it.
- 47:11So here's here's. What this match and this card
- 47:14did for me, this match and this card in particular did not make
- 47:19me want to go back and watch anything from 2009.
- 47:22And I don't mean that as a knock, but like there's a lot of
- 47:25wrestling out there that in my lifetime I have not watched.
- 47:28And I feel like there's also a ton that I have watched, but
- 47:31this whole entire event and this specific match did not make me
- 47:36want to go back and watch this era.
- 47:38Would you say if you you reached your breaking point?
- 47:44Oh man, that was better than me trying to squeeze in this I
- 47:47hate. WCW.
- 47:49All right, so I give this as per usual.
- 47:54I feel like this is my new trend, or actually it's probably
- 47:57not new. I give it.
- 47:58I gave it 3 1/2 cans in the cooler.
- 48:01I I wasn't. We're all on the same page.
- 48:04Though yeah, I agree 100% with everything you guys say here.
- 48:08Here are my talking points of what I did not like, I don't
- 48:11like. I quit matches the microphone in
- 48:13the face. Not a big fan.
- 48:15We talked about that and also I think outside of the actual
- 48:21match, I think Jerry Lawler really hurt the match.
- 48:24I don't think, I think if you had someone better, and I'm not
- 48:27and and it's not even Michael Cole, didn't bother me.
- 48:30I've been very adamant, especially on the Discord about
- 48:33how I have grown to really appreciate what Michael Cole
- 48:36does. I don't think he's ever like,
- 48:39even though he is the lead guy, he needs another guy to work off
- 48:43of. And I don't think he and Waller
- 48:46have very good chemistry. I actually think they have very
- 48:48bad chemistry and I think Waller specifically hurt them.
- 48:53And then my my other issue why I couldn't go higher than 3 1/2
- 48:57was super Cena. Orton is absolutely obliterating
- 49:01him in this match. He's he's stomping on his head
- 49:04on steel steps. The, the, the kendo stick across
- 49:08the midsection, the, the chair shots to the head, you know,
- 49:12just the, the onslaught of moves.
- 49:14And then it kind of feels like the match flips on a dime out of
- 49:18nowhere, Cena. Doesn't do much.
- 49:20Yeah, it's a 19 minute match. Yeah, it's a 19, can't imagine.
- 49:24I didn't time it or anything, but my guess would be for 15
- 49:29minutes it's all Randy Orton and then the last four minutes is
- 49:32super Cena. So that's why I can't go higher
- 49:36than 3.5. I would recommend as we build to
- 49:40Backlash if you're looking for something to watch before this
- 49:42weekend. This is something fun to go
- 49:45watch, especially if you weren't watching in 2009.
- 49:49But at the same time, I have no interest in rewatching anything
- 49:53from 2009. Now, does it impact the way that
- 49:57you will watch Orton and Cena this weekend in 2025?
- 50:01OK, so that's a really good question because I absolutely
- 50:05hate, hate, hate the may the the post WrestleMania pay-per-view.
- 50:11I I think it's the pay-per-view PLE that I am least interested
- 50:16and least likely to watch. I'll still watch, but I think
- 50:21it's it's always too close to Mania.
- 50:24And I think they would benefit from, no, I know they have to
- 50:27for financial reasons, which we're not going to go down that
- 50:29road, but I think they would benefit from just post
- 50:34WrestleMania and just let it cool till June or Money in the
- 50:38Bank, whatever's next. Because you look at the card and
- 50:42you're like, am I really into any of these matches?
- 50:45Not really. They all feel forced.
- 50:49I I think that the Cena Orton match this weekend is going to
- 50:53be a lot of fun. Yes, I, I agree.
- 50:55And I think, and I think with Cena's career ending in
- 51:00December, whenever it's going to and I think, you know, Orton on
- 51:03the tail end of his career, I think it's appropriate that they
- 51:06are having a feud in this run. You know, I think for that
- 51:10reason, yeah. Yeah, for for that reason, this
- 51:14is great, but in a nutshell, backlash is not something I'm
- 51:20looking forward to. I don't want to go off on a full
- 51:22tangent on this, but like I feel like they've made strides
- 51:25forward because when it was the WrestleMania Backlash, brother.
- 51:29It was like, oh, that was garbage you.
- 51:31Were like eating matches from Mania and then you understand
- 51:35your take of like I'm just not interested.
- 51:36That totally makes sense. This is going to be another back
- 51:40to the PLE formula of they have five matches booked.
- 51:44Now we're recording on Tuesday night before the pay-per-view
- 51:47and they have five matches booked.
- 51:50Obviously another one could be added during Smack Down if
- 51:52really necessary, but sure, there's, you know, McAfee
- 51:56against Gunther. That's not going to do anything
- 51:58for for many people. That being on the card is what
- 52:01pisses me off the most, but that I don't want to go there.
- 52:03It's not about the match, it's about the story that's
- 52:05inevitably going to come from it.
- 52:07But yes, like I said, I'm going too far on this tangent, but I
- 52:10don't really think that this learning the history of Orton
- 52:14and Cena. They've had 21 matches together,
- 52:1722 if you count OVW. They had a no contest in OVW as
- 52:21Cena was the prototype. Cena has thirteen wins, Randy
- 52:25has 8 and there's one no contest mixed in.
- 52:28Now those are just television matches or PLE matches,
- 52:32pay-per-view matches, So and that's just one-on-one that's
- 52:35not X tags or anything else along the way.
- 52:38So I thought it was really interesting to kind of go back
- 52:40and learn a lot of this, but I don't feel like it really
- 52:44impacted my excitement for the match this week.
- 52:48No, no, but it's, I don't know. I listen, we're approaching five
- 52:54years of this podcast. We, we clearly enjoy the history
- 52:58lesson, right? Like we enjoy the history of
- 53:01professional wrestling. And I, I've made it very clear,
- 53:05as much fun as I have watching stuff that I've watched, you
- 53:10know, many times, whether it's live or rewatched, I also really
- 53:14enjoy watching things with fresh eyes for the first time.
- 53:17And for that purpose, I enjoyed it.
- 53:20But like you said, it, it it didn't do anything to like make
- 53:23me like, oh, this feud makes that much more sense.
- 53:27Exactly, and this is still very early on in their their feud.
- 53:31Yes, seen 1/6. Championship.
- 53:34Correct. Yeah, but they go to to face
- 53:37each other again in October at Hell in a Cell like they they're
- 53:40going to, you know, Randy Orton's going to get the title
- 53:42back at Hell in a Cell 2009, which is the very next month
- 53:46they reach. Their breaking point?
- 53:49It's starting to get in that mode.
- 53:51Yeah. Hey, listen, we're all on the
- 53:53same page. If you're looking for something
- 53:54to watch, if you're looking for something to maybe, you know, I
- 53:57know we just got done saying how it doesn't get me excited for
- 54:00it. It's a cool like rehash, like
- 54:02it's the match to watch between these two If you're looking for
- 54:06something in preparation for for Backlash.
- 54:09I'm I'm on, I'm on cagematch.net at the moment and.
- 54:12What did Melton? I have that too, but if if you
- 54:16look at this, they have the Orton and Cena have 2009 at
- 54:21SummerSlam. They have their match there
- 54:24where Orton wins. Then you have an I quit match
- 54:27that we just talked about in September.
- 54:30So August, September, then October is Hell in a Cell and
- 54:35then you're going to October 25th.
- 54:38Still later in that month you're going to WWE bragging rights and
- 54:42they have a 60 minute Iron Man match.
- 54:44Like I kept getting confused, like is it bragging rights?
- 54:46Is it breaking point? Is it bragging rights or
- 54:48breaking point? Which one is it that we're
- 54:50watching? And then they have another
- 54:53televised match in December at Raw.
- 54:56Which apparently that's enough guys it.
- 54:59Was like the year 2009 tournament final was Cena
- 55:02against. Orton, yes.
- 55:03So Cena's got 16 titles and Orton's got what, 14?
- 55:08How many of them have been lost to each other like it's?
- 55:10Crazy. Here we go.
- 55:11So I've got that for us right here and it's, you said 16, it's
- 55:15up to 17 now pal. So there's 123 4/4 times they
- 55:21have, there's been 20 changes, sorry.
- 55:24Wow. This was the first, and then
- 55:27again it Hell in the Cell and then again during the Iron Man
- 55:29match. So three of the four were.
- 55:31Just what I want to watch an hour long Iron Man match.
- 55:35Like who actually enjoys that? Right?
- 55:38Like who? Who?
- 55:40There were 1111 total falls in that match all.
- 55:44Right. I'll give them that then.
- 55:46Better than that, Brett and Sean.
- 55:47That's interesting. And then there was a
- 55:50unification. He hammered on the discord for
- 55:53that. And there's a unification
- 55:56Tables, Ladders and Chairs match from 2013, which is the last of
- 56:02the four title changes when Randy Orton beats John Cena and
- 56:05unifies the titles. All right.
- 56:08I think it's, I think it's about time we we, yeah, look at this
- 56:11guy. He's like doing his one lock on
- 56:13the bus right now. Yeah, exactly.
- 56:15No, I I had it prepped. It's up here.
- 56:18I knew there were going to be talks about it, especially when
- 56:20I bring up the fact that they faced each other 21 times.
- 56:22But take a guess of what Meltzer gave it, Mike.
- 56:27I already saw I. Didn't look it up.
- 56:29I didn't. See, I looked it up and I know
- 56:31Nick looked at my notes. I want to say I'm going to say
- 56:352.75. Four and a quarter?
- 56:38What? 4 and a quarter.
- 56:41Wild. Unbelievable.
- 56:44Maybe that was the reason why I came in too, because I knew like
- 56:47I, I rated it and then I looked up Meltzer and I was, I wasn't
- 56:51expecting to be so far off like I I giving 3 1/4 and Meltzer
- 56:55giving it four and a quarter. Usually it's the other way
- 56:58around. So how about let's let's let's.
- 57:01Pile on that in, in the, I don't know what the footage is from,
- 57:06but in the Raw, the recap of this match on Raw on Monday
- 57:10night this week, Foley compares it to Brett and Austin at
- 57:14WrestleMania. And I thought that was yes, I, I
- 57:19was like, Foley, come on, man, who made you say that?
- 57:22Like, come on, that's a stretch. Was it the brutality, quote, UN
- 57:26quote, of this match? Yeah, I think that's what he was
- 57:29kind of comparing it to of these two just going at one another.
- 57:32And it was a submission match. So sure, submission match.
- 57:35I quit match. But like if you had Cena or if
- 57:39you had Orton with the same, you know, Crimson mask that Austin
- 57:44had. All right, man, We're, we're
- 57:46raising our grades a little bit higher than one. 100% and that's
- 57:49not coming from people who are like big on like.
- 57:51Needing the bloodthirsty. Yeah, yeah.
- 57:54All right, so thank you guys for listening to this.
- 57:56I I hope I know we didn't really like endorse this and say go
- 58:00watch it before backlash, but I listening to this hopefully got
- 58:04you excited for backlash. But it's Mike, you work great's
- 58:10birthday next week. So what we said was I said, go
- 58:14give us guys. I said we're going to do Orton
- 58:18and Cena this week. And then I said, Mike, Jim, this
- 58:23is your wheelhouse, Go give us some wrestle crap.
- 58:26So he dug up some wrestle crap. And we're not going to be there
- 58:29next week for that. But the week after, right before
- 58:31Memorial Day, we will be there with some wrestle crap for you
- 58:35guys because we owe it to you and more importantly, ourselves.
- 58:40So we need to have a few good laughs at the absurdity.
