Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Super Bowl 60 Final Thoughts, Iowa women fall to Minnesota, Eugene Rapay Talks Cyclone Hoops & the Chicken Coop Contest
Transcript
- 0:13All right, Good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:17football Friday. Can we?
- 0:20Last one last. One, welcome to our program.
- 0:23We're going to talk sports with you for the next couple of hours
- 0:26and appreciate you starting your afternoon here with us.
- 0:29Coming up on the program, we'll start in about 25 minutes with
- 0:33our friend Eugene Repay from the Des Moines Register.
- 0:36Eugene, we'll talk. Iowa State, Iowa State, the men
- 0:38back on the floor finally after a week break.
- 0:42They played Sunday, didn't they? Well, for the most part, a week
- 0:44break, Baylor in town. I saw a number posted for
- 0:47tomorrow's game. Iowa State, I believe it was at
- 0:49FanDuel, 14 1/2. Iowa State favored over the
- 0:53Bears tomorrow. That was the one and only post
- 0:56at wager talk when it came to a a point spread for that one.
- 0:59So Baylor comes to town and getting a whole bunch of points.
- 1:03We will use that, by the way, in our chicken coop, which will
- 1:07follow Eugene repay 4 of you. If you haven't played in the
- 1:10last 30 days, you're eligible to do so.
- 1:12When we give you that cue to call about O 12:45 or so, we'll
- 1:16line up four of you, give you 4 questions or four games gives
- 1:19the answer most rights. You'll get a $50.00 gift
- 1:21certificate to use as you please at any of the three chicken
- 1:24coops. The runner up gets 20 wings.
- 1:27That'll be about 12:45 or thereabouts, 1 clock, Tom Cakert
- 1:31on Iowa. We'll talk men, we'll talk
- 1:33women. The women fell to Minnesota last
- 1:36night, tried to come back just too steep of a hill late in that
- 1:40game. So we'll talk to Tom Cakert
- 1:42about basketball, men's and women's and some football with
- 1:44Tom. And then off to Vegas, we'll go
- 1:46and catch up with a friend, Mike Pom, VP of operations at Circa
- 1:50Sports. Kind of get a a gauge of what
- 1:52Vegas is seeing, in particular what Circa is seeing as far as
- 1:55big bets as far as action on this Super Bowl.
- 1:58And I get his thoughts on the matchup over.
- 2:01We'll make some picks. We'll make a pick for the final
- 2:04time and then turn things over to off the bench with Lucas
- 2:09Train and David Eichold filling in for Sean as he attends some
- 2:13family business back home in in Chicago.
- 2:15Good to see you TC. How are?
- 2:17You doing well. A basketball night of a lot of
- 2:20women's hoops last evening with the Iowa Minnesota game.
- 2:23Did you watch most of it? Yeah, watched all of it.
- 2:25Watched quite a bit of the Texas LSU women's game.
- 2:28Then after that on. Is it good?
- 2:30It was Texas pulled away in the fourth quarter, but yeah,
- 2:33pretty, pretty compelling one. I think, opening the eyes, just
- 2:36how good that Texas team is. National championship tech type
- 2:39team are probably a cut below. I mean, is it Yukon?
- 2:41Everybody else? Yeah, is it?
- 2:43Yeah, you know, it's. UCLA good.
- 2:46They're good, yeah. I don't see those teams beating
- 2:48you guys. I don't either.
- 2:49I hope not because I'm using them as a free square and all of
- 2:51my bets it's. Just throwing that in there as
- 2:53well. I'm.
- 2:53Bumping up the price. Well, we did that two years ago
- 2:55in South Carolina. Three years ago, yeah, it
- 2:57worked. No, three years ago it didn't.
- 2:5803 years ago. Caitlin Clark had different
- 3:00ideas. Oh, that three years ago.
- 3:02Was that three years ago? I thought it was more, but it
- 3:04worked the following year, yes. Anyways, so we will talk to Mike
- 3:09Palm about the Super Bowl. What kind of, I mean, does this
- 3:12kind of feel like Super Bowl to you?
- 3:15The match up, at least I it does.
- 3:17And why does it? Because the Patriots been there
- 3:19so many time? No, it's a new cast, obviously.
- 3:22New coach, new quarterback, new everything.
- 3:25I don't know. It's maybe you don't have Drake
- 3:29Bay was really good this year. Second, the MVP is really good,
- 3:32but he's still a new quarterback.
- 3:35Sam Darnold. We know about everything with
- 3:37Sam Darnold. I think that's a component.
- 3:40There are teams that don't have JS, NS outstanding.
- 3:43Sure. I, I don't know.
- 3:46We don't know these guys like we have the Chiefs over the last
- 3:49what, 7 years? I think that's a component to it
- 3:52where every football fan, even the most casual football fan,
- 3:56knows a lot about the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 3:58Sure. In turn, you know a lot about
- 4:00the Philadelphia Eagles. They're teams that it doesn't
- 4:03feel like we know a lot about, I think.
- 4:05It's a very good. Point we got to November and
- 4:07both of us were saying outside of the Buffalo game I've.
- 4:09Only I hadn't seen the Patriots. We didn't know anything about
- 4:11them. How good is this is The Mirage
- 4:13we didn't know I bought? That theory and obviously that
- 4:16whoops, not the right move. Seattle we saw a lot, but that
- 4:21was another one. Towards the back half of the
- 4:22year is when we started. And they kind of get
- 4:25overshadowed, I think, at least here, by obviously pretty mania.
- 4:28And the Niners and the Rams are a public.
- 4:31Team. Yes, absolutely.
- 4:32You know, so it's the Seahawks are, you know, in that division
- 4:35you would think the third most popular, but look at it's not a
- 4:39popularity contest. It's about playing on the field
- 4:41and and Seattle, if there is a blowout, it's Seattle's NCS
- 4:45favor, right? There's three outcomes.
- 4:48Patriots win a closer one, Seattle wins a closer one.
- 4:50Seattle blows them out. I don't see.
- 4:51I don't see a fourth. I I'm with you on that front.
- 4:54I think that is the right way to look at this game.
- 4:57So I have some props that I have circled.
- 5:00I have some things and outside of the goofy ones, the silly
- 5:02ones, I'll bet tails, because I do every single year.
- 5:06We found something offshore for our Mediacom show.
- 5:09Which one you found a bunch? Of them the Seahawks.
- 5:12Will they call heads or tails? That's a really.
- 5:14That was so weird. It was. -500 on the heads +300.
- 5:19That they will call Tails. That they will call Tails that.
- 5:21Doesn't have to come tails they. Don't have to win it call and
- 5:24win, just call. I thought that was absolutely
- 5:27eye opening. So I'm looking for that on some
- 5:28legal apps to see if that's available in any part of it.
- 5:32Couple of game theory ones though.
- 5:35The first one is Kenneth Walker. Kenneth Walker is basically the
- 5:39guy now, right? Two things.
- 5:42The Patriots when they've had basically their full component
- 5:46of defensive players, they haven't allowed anybody to rush
- 5:49for 74 1/2 yards. That's his over, under and
- 5:52rushing yards like the under there another component that.
- 5:55Would make sense. On top of it, we know that
- 5:57Kenneth Walker for whatever reason, he is not a good pass
- 5:59blocker. Well, isn't that pretty much a
- 6:02key? He's in there probably going to
- 6:03run the ball. We're not going to throw it very
- 6:05often when he's in there and against Grable on this defense
- 6:08when they know what's coming. I like the patriots D so under
- 6:12on Kenneth Walker. That's one of the game theory
- 6:14ones that I probably like the most.
- 6:16I mentioned earlier this week I am on the under our longest
- 6:19punts from the Seahawks punter 58 1/2.
- 6:22He's only had or 57 1/2 is the number it.
- 6:25Considers the highest paid punter in football.
- 6:27He has improved this year his hang time and with with it the
- 6:31coverage that has been back behind is given a lot less
- 6:34return yards and I think that's a reason for it.
- 6:36He's putting the ball higher this year.
- 6:37Only four punts all season long a 58 yards or more and I think 2
- 6:41or 50. Eight.
- 6:42What did that? What number did they hang?
- 6:4357 1/2 that was available at DraftKings when I did that.
- 6:47I think Tuesday is what I jumped in.
- 6:49So those are just a couple of the game theory ones that I
- 6:51have, but I know Saturday, Sunday morning, it's going to be
- 6:56that deep dive or really going in there deeper and deeper.
- 6:58But maybe that's a component too.
- 7:00It feels like at this point in the week, I have 10/12/15 of
- 7:04those kind of game theory prop bets that I I like and I've
- 7:07identified. I just don't have it this one.
- 7:10Yeah, I wonder how if if Vegas is kind of the same way.
- 7:13I, I haven't talked to him, I someone back to work this
- 7:15Wednesday through Saturday or this was Sunday and I talked to
- 7:19him every Saturday, every Tuesday.
- 7:20When I talked to him on Tuesday, it's, I mean, it was too early
- 7:23in the week. You know, there was really
- 7:25nothing going on. They'd taken a couple of big
- 7:27ones that were publicized, the $1,000,000 bet that somebody was
- 7:31hedging because they are so, so deep into the Seahawks with
- 7:35their tickets. I, I just can't make a case for,
- 7:39for the Patriots. I, I can't.
- 7:40And this has nothing to do with the fact they beat Denver.
- 7:43I just have thought that the AFC has been an inferior conference
- 7:47all season long and the two teams I thought were the best
- 7:50two teams in football and ended up playing for the championship.
- 7:52I'll tell you a guy in Seattle who I knew nothing about it at
- 7:55South Carolina. Amanda Wari.
- 7:57How's he say? The tall safety?
- 8:00He's a hell of a player. Second round pick from last
- 8:03year, just a rookie. He was the one that the kid that
- 8:06twisted his ankle. How do you say his name?
- 8:08Amanda Wari, Is that Amanda Wari?
- 8:12He's a heck of a player. I didn't realize he was that
- 8:14good, but obviously that's a question mark.
- 8:18So Drake May's gonna, I think. Is he gonna run it more?
- 8:22Is he? He might have to.
- 8:23Yeah, he might have to. He's been sacked a ton
- 8:25throughout these playoffs. Yes.
- 8:27I mean, Houston got to him. Denver is it?
- 8:30Didn't that why? Do you know what?
- 8:31That's probably on? Did the Chargers get to 5?
- 8:34They might have, because I think Denver did.
- 8:36I think Houston got to him five times.
- 8:38And the Chargers would have a nice defense.
- 8:42Wow, that's a that. That's a bunch and and Seattle
- 8:44defense I don't think takes a back seat to very few in this
- 8:47league. What about some of the receivers
- 8:49for New England? Do you like digs, booty or the
- 8:51guy that shows up in bare feet for every game went Mac Hollins?
- 8:54Boy, he's something. Hollins, I think is his number
- 8:58is pretty low and he's out there, been out there a little
- 9:00bit more and I think he's going to be out there plenty in this
- 9:02game. That would be 1 and I think 21
- 9:041/2 is like his yardage total, something like that.
- 9:06I had that one. I at least identified I had a
- 9:09Stefan digs. He's been good in the third
- 9:10quarter this year. I had a stuffed it Stefan digs
- 9:13third quarter. It's like 4 1/2 yards, basically
- 9:15needs a catch. So he needs one catch in the
- 9:17third. Quarter Well, he'll probably
- 9:18catch a screen for two yards and I'll lose that bet.
- 9:19I mean, that's that's the way that it totally goes.
- 9:22But that one feels good, you know, and kick booty.
- 9:24Can he get deep? Can he get behind the Seahawks
- 9:26defense? I don't.
- 9:27Know that I don't think so. That's what I'm betting on, that
- 9:30he can't 'cause they're they're, I think they got a good
- 9:33secondary. I love the kid Witherspoon of
- 9:36the from Illinois, right, Illinois.
- 9:39I think he was part of the Russell Wilson.
- 9:40He was Denver's draft pick. I mean, he was Denver's pick for
- 9:42the Wilson and they took Witherspoon in that spot.
- 9:45Bryan's a nice player, man. War.
- 9:46He's a guy that's got my attention.
- 9:48I'm sure I'm butchering his name, but I don't know.
- 9:52I don't think there's a coaching edge in the in the in the game.
- 9:54I I don't how about this? Part of it.
- 9:57So Mike McDonald, he was with Baltimore for a long time.
- 10:01Where else has he been? I I don't know the answer to
- 10:04that. You know, bring up his full
- 10:06resume here. He's born in 87.
- 10:09Good God, it's unreal. See, really born in 87, all
- 10:13right. Coordinator for the Ravens.
- 10:16Before that, Michigan. Before that, linebacker coach
- 10:19with the Raiders. So basically, he's been to the
- 10:20Ravens his whole career. So he hasn't been to a Super
- 10:24Bowl in a really long time. Mike Vrabel has institutional
- 10:27knowledge of the Super Bowl. With without a doubt, I mean the
- 10:30craziest Mike Vrabel stat, and I think we looked it up one time
- 10:33before and I can't remember the number in his career, linebacker
- 10:38Mike Vrabel caught, I want to say 10 passes.
- 10:42All of them went for a touchdown.
- 10:44Every single pass that he caught as a linebacker, when he would
- 10:49be brought in on the offense, it was a touchdown.
- 10:51How many is it? It's 11.
- 10:53It's 111111 during the regular, 11 overall.
- 10:56Right. And that one of them didn't go
- 10:57for a touchdown. Right, All 11 went for touchdown
- 11:00was crazy, yes. Did you have a touchdown in the
- 11:04Super Bowl or no? One in the postseason.
- 11:06OK, let's see. Caught 2 touchdowns back-to-back
- 11:09Super Bowl wins. Super Bowl?
- 11:11What would that be? Roman numerals are dumb.
- 11:14I hate it 38 I don't get it. 38 and 39.
- 11:16Yeah, but why do we do? Why do they do?
- 11:18This, I have no idea. And then you got the I in front
- 11:22of the V All right. That takes it back to four.
- 11:24It takes 2. I learned Roman numerals
- 11:26probably in 1965 in. 1987 for me, but the same year Mike
- 11:31McDonald was born. I mean, who uses Roman numerals?
- 11:35We got to stop. Wouldn't this be a perfect time?
- 11:37Super Bowl 60? Let's, let's end it now, please.
- 11:40Yes, they won't. Couldn't agree.
- 11:41No, I know they won't for whatever.
- 11:43Reason Super Bowl is 3839 though.
- 11:46I want to, I want to go this way because the Hall of Fame made
- 11:48their announcement yesterday. We've got three guys next year
- 11:52that will be eligible for the first time.
- 11:54I don't know if there's a, a magic number that you only want
- 11:59to get one new guy, 2 new guys because at some point you got to
- 12:02start clearing some of these guys that just get passed over
- 12:05year after year for the Hall of Fame just because there's so
- 12:08many new guys. Of these three new guys, how
- 12:11many get in? And then I'll ask you whom if
- 12:13you give me 3, here's the new guys up for the very first time.
- 12:19Rob Gronkowski, Ben Roethlisberger, Adrian Peterson,
- 12:23First ballot, Hall of Farmers. This time next year, how many on
- 12:26that list will hear will get that knock on the door that
- 12:30they've gained enshrinement to Canton?
- 12:32I think 2 are locks. 2 are locks, 2 are locks.
- 12:37Which one is on the outside looking in?
- 12:40Rob? I agree with you, Rob.
- 12:41Gronkowski is the most talented tight end.
- 12:45Full compliment we have ever seen in football.
- 12:46He's in. Adrian Peterson did historic
- 12:51things. Yes, he's in.
- 12:53He's out. Big Ben is in for you.
- 12:56I got Ben. I think what's going to keep
- 12:59Peterson out of the Hall of Fame And yes, his career screams Hall
- 13:03of Fame, but there's a morality clause now.
- 13:06It's one of the criteria. It's not.
- 13:09I don't think it means more than any of the others.
- 13:12But if you take a look at his body of work as of late, and
- 13:16then you remember the the didn't child abuse with didn't he beat
- 13:20it with a what? They called it a switch.
- 13:22I didn't know what a switch was. Oh.
- 13:24I knew. I knew now don't we do.
- 13:26I won't go, I won't go there. But I, I just wonder if because
- 13:31he's been in and out prison, he's stolen I think over a
- 13:37million, a couple of $1,000,000. I wonder if that'll be held
- 13:40against him. Probably.
- 13:42Do you think? Yeah, he's still only 40.
- 13:45That's crazy too. When he's running back.
- 13:47Yeah, and it quickly does. This comes and goes.
- 13:51So is there a way that all three get in though?
- 13:55I don't know the answer, Trent, because I don't, I think that's
- 13:59too many because there's so there's, there's, I mean Tori
- 14:02Holt, guys like this at some point, I mean even an Eli
- 14:06Matting, whether you think he's, you know, I mean, he's got 2
- 14:08Super Bowls and he's thrown for a million or thousands of yards,
- 14:13not millions, but he's and he's thrown a lot, thrown a lot of
- 14:16touchdown passes. It's the two Super Bowls.
- 14:18Yes, he's got one, but he's in a very unique club with, with two.
- 14:23I think he's got to get in at some point.
- 14:27I don't know. We'll see.
- 14:29I think of the for sure. If it is only one, it's Gronk,
- 14:32right? Yes, yeah, yeah, that's that's
- 14:34the easy one for me. That's the lock of the three.
- 14:38And then if it's down to just one of the two, I would side
- 14:42Peterson. But then, boy, Big Ben 2 Super
- 14:44Bowls led the NFL in passing two different times.
- 14:48I didn't realize that till looking at it.
- 14:52Six time Pro Bowl and it doesn't really matter.
- 14:54Yeah, no, as we know. Yeah, sure, Sanders is in the
- 14:57Pro Bowl. This year, but.
- 14:59Yeah, apparently it was last night or the night before.
- 15:01Yeah, two nights ago was it? Yeah.
- 15:04Didn't make the cut for you. Didn't.
- 15:05Realize was it televised? It was OK, I didn't see it and
- 15:08you watched, I think. It was, no, it was Tuesday
- 15:10night. I think I was calling basketball
- 15:11that. Night.
- 15:11All right, I think that was the Hall of Fame this year is Larry
- 15:15Fitzgerald, Drew Brees, Luke Keikley, Adam Vinatieri.
- 15:18He had to get in. I mean, say what you want,
- 15:20kicker, he's as good as there was at that position.
- 15:23He gets in. I think all of those guys are
- 15:26deserving and Rodger Craig makes the cut.
- 15:29You know what I didn't see? I don't think Ken Anderson that
- 15:34seemingly was going to finally get his hear his name called.
- 15:42I don't think he made the cut and now he and Elsie Greenwood
- 15:45won't get in. I think that was the last time.
- 15:47Wasn't that why some of the voters?
- 15:49Yes, yeah. Because they they, this was the
- 15:51last time they were going to get there.
- 15:52I don't know Ken Anderson, a Hall of Famer to you.
- 15:55No. Same.
- 15:58Same. Nice player.
- 15:59Yeah, nice player. Couple of Super Bowls didn't win
- 16:02them. Hall of Famer can't quite get.
- 16:04There. All right, Let's get Ben real
- 16:06quick and then we will move on. Ben, how are you?
- 16:12Yep. Hey, so why do you think I think
- 16:15of the Hall of Fame? I think of can you tell the
- 16:18game, the story of the game and not bring them up?
- 16:22And I think Manning, I mean, he's he's got these moments in
- 16:25the Super Bowl. I mean, think about the David
- 16:27Tyree catch. Unbelievable beating, beating,
- 16:30beating Patriots, stopping that undefined team.
- 16:33I mean, plugged off Eli was a thing.
- 16:36I mean, he was like, Oh my God, playoff Eli here he is.
- 16:38He's in my mind, he absolutely should be a Hall of Fame.
- 16:42Yeah, I agree with you. Are you a Giants fan by chance
- 16:45or no? I'm a Cowboys.
- 16:47Fan, you know what that resonates even more.
- 16:50Absolutely appreciate that from you, Ben.
- 16:52Thank. You so I think that.
- 16:53Here's my one question, though, and I I I say no.
- 16:56Is Romo a Hall of Famer? No, I don't think so.
- 17:00I don't think so. I mean, when you think of Tony
- 17:02Romo as a football player, you think of why he was fumbling the
- 17:06yes, why was he even holding being the holder there, which is
- 17:09inexplicable for his starting quarterback in that day and age
- 17:12to be doing that anyway, that's where your mind goes first.
- 17:14That's not Hall of Fame. I mean Mark Sanchez, he first
- 17:17think of the butt fumble and and for him and.
- 17:19That's what I'm. Saying yeah, it's tough.
- 17:21And I I say the same thing, but look at passing yardage in
- 17:24Cowboys history. The Dallas Cowboys quarterback,
- 17:27He's the number one stats for all of them.
- 17:29Is that right? Wow, Ben, who do you like to?
- 17:32Who do you like Sunday, by the way, Ben?
- 17:34I got Seahawks about like 2721 I think.
- 17:37All right. Comfortable cover.
- 17:39I think it comes up to special teams.
- 17:40It could. Good.
- 17:42Thanks, Ben. Appreciate the call.
- 17:43Thanks for listening. Good.
- 17:44Yep, that's a good way to look at it.
- 17:46Can you tell the tell the story of football with.
- 17:49I like that. Yeah, I do too.
- 17:51Last three years for Eli. Not good.
- 17:53No? Three different times, he threw
- 17:5520 or more interceptions. A couple years for his brother
- 17:57not. Good.
- 17:58That's true too though. There's a Super Bowl that got
- 18:00help things. Thank you, Von Miller, Yes.
- 18:03And the no fly defense. They went three and 12/5 and
- 18:0511:00, and then he's one and three and then his final four
- 18:08starts of his career. It petered out.
- 18:11But I think Ben's argument is the most relevant if you're
- 18:16talking about and then it's just a museum, right?
- 18:19That's all this is. It's just a museum.
- 18:21And if you're talking cool though, if you're talking about
- 18:23the history of the sport, Eli Manning during that period for a
- 18:2915 year run from O 4 to 19, he is a huge part of that era of
- 18:33football, not just two Super Bowls, but who he dispatched to
- 18:36do it, the fashion. How many times we bring up Tom
- 18:39Coughlin in the cold? Well, Eli was a quarterback that
- 18:41won that game in Lambeau Field and Tom Coughlin looked like
- 18:45rather be anywhere else. That Red Nose bold to see and he
- 18:49was ready to get out of there. Those are the memories that you
- 18:52have of that era in a museum. Yes, he should be there though
- 18:56the stats don't measure up the numbers compared to many other
- 18:59quarterbacks don't. The two super.
- 19:01Bowls, Super Bowls, I think put you in that.
- 19:03And if it was just against another AFCT?
- 19:05Right, it was against Brady in 19 and oh.
- 19:07Yes. To do that against that squad, I
- 19:10think that elevates it. Even beat Brady both times.
- 19:12Yes, right, Alan Belichick, I'll give you that.
- 19:16Did you see Matthew Stafford on the stage last night accepting
- 19:18his at Most Valuable Player? Award.
- 19:20I did not. Oh.
- 19:20That's so good, I won't spoil it.
- 19:23Look, bring it up and. You think so?
- 19:26I thought it was good. I'm a I mean, you know, I mean,
- 19:29I cried. Yeah.
- 19:30It, it tugged it, it got me. And I'm not a girl, Dad.
- 19:34I'm not a. Girl, dad.
- 19:34OK, That's what it was about. Yeah, it all right.
- 19:37Daughters were on the stage. OK.
- 19:39I mean, that was pretty cool. And then the way, yeah, it's
- 19:42good. It's good.
- 19:43Anyways, Eugene repay is coming up.
- 19:45He covers Iowa State. We will get into that on the
- 19:48other side, Des Moines Register, of course, is where you can read
- 19:51Eugene. We've got our chicken coop
- 19:53giveaway. We'll give you the cue to call
- 19:55there in about, oh, 25 minutes or thereabouts from right now.
- 19:59Obviously the Super Bowl will be a part of it.
- 20:01You want to throw a prop in? Oh, absolutely.
- 20:03Hey, by the way, I think you told me about this and I'm, I'm
- 20:06reason I'm bringing it up and not doing so during a commercial
- 20:08break and thanking you is. So I was watching, trying to
- 20:12find something to watch last night.
- 20:13Settle on a hockey game. Not settle.
- 20:15I love hockey and it was Florida and Tampa and they hate each
- 20:17other and it and it and it didn't disappoint.
- 20:22So I'm going to my guide and whatever the Hell's this game
- 20:25right. He was on ESPN plus, but you
- 20:27told me that in the ESP NS the two O 620-720-8209 that you get
- 20:32to a point now that DIRECTV is listing ESPN pluses and you
- 20:37don't have to go to the extra remote to do that song and
- 20:39dance. It's right there and it worked
- 20:43it. Worked.
- 20:44How about that? And, and Drake's on there
- 20:46tonight against who? The Illinois State tonight, I
- 20:48think. Drake, Illinois State, that's a
- 20:50game changer for you. It's a game changer, Yes, it's
- 20:53so much easier. Simplifying things for the old
- 20:55man. Thank you.
- 20:57Hey, what are the local front quickly just on the Iowa women's
- 21:00basketball team? Yeah, we should.
- 21:01Thank you. Yes. 9185 Not as close as the
- 21:04final score. To the No, it wasn't.
- 21:06They could string together stops.
- 21:07So I found this number outside of the UConn game.
- 21:10You put that off? Yeah.
- 21:12Their last three games now playing full time without Taylor
- 21:15McCain and I know, yes. 2 W coasters and then home.
- 21:18It was a minute that she was gone in the game against Ohio
- 21:20State, I get it. But since then, with her in the
- 21:23starting lineup now not in the starting lineup, they have had
- 21:26their three worst defensive performances outside of the
- 21:28Yukon Game one O 8 defensive rating against USC, 119 against
- 21:32UCLA and last night against Minnesota was even worse than
- 21:35they did against UConn defensively. 129.4, a hundreds
- 21:38average. If you're above that, that's
- 21:39bad. 129.4, That is hideous. 10 of 14.
- 21:43And the court concern, I thought was the end of Sophie Hart
- 21:45inside. She's 65.
- 21:47She's pretty. Yeah.
- 21:48She was the only starter that didn't have double figures for
- 21:50Minnesota last night. They're 10 of 14 from behind the
- 21:52arc defensively. They look lost and he couple it
- 21:56all right. Ian McCabe out there and Jan, we
- 21:57talked about her quote where she said she makes all the right
- 21:59plays, right supposed to switch. She does.
- 22:01She hedges when she's supposed to.
- 22:02You know she's going to be in the right spot.
- 22:04We know Kyler Fierbach, though, good defender, however, kind of
- 22:09a whole offensively now you got that out there and you're
- 22:12playing four on five and you're going to have to do it for
- 22:14longer stretches when that happens.
- 22:17Last night's tremolo, she really struggled.
- 22:20There's not an easy elixir here. There's not something easy that
- 22:22you can point to for Jan and say, oh, just do this and it'll
- 22:25be fine. I think the concerns are
- 22:26starting to grow a little bit. I, I'm, I was dead wrong.
- 22:30I thought the McCabe entry was not going to be a big deal.
- 22:32It was a lot bigger than I certainly anticipate.
- 22:34I think those numbers that you just throw kind of back that up,
- 22:38unfortunately. All right, let's head to
- 22:40kxno.com. Your chance to win $1000 heading
- 22:43into Super Bowl weekend. Wouldn't that be nice?

- 22:51Your chance to win $1000 bonus at kxno.com.
- 22:55Eugene repay is next. Miller and Condon on Des Moines
- 22:58Sports Station One O 6.3 KXNO. Hi, Miller Condon, welcome back.
- 23:16Just past 12:30 and a Friday before the Super Bowl still to
- 23:22come. This hour, we'll get 4 of you an
- 23:23opportunity to play for some grub from the Chicken Koopa.
- 23:26Let's talk some Iowa State, shall we?
- 23:28We do so every Friday with Eugene Repay, assuming he's not
- 23:31an airplane and Iowa State's at home this week.
- 23:34So you're not on an airplane. What did you do all week,
- 23:36Eugene? Iowa State was off.
- 23:38Did you stay busy? I stayed busy but mostly just
- 23:42twiddled my thumbs. It's weird having this quote UN
- 23:45quote vibe, but it is nice to be back at home for the weekend and
- 23:49actually be in Iowa for once and not on an airplane.
- 23:51Yeah, no doubt about it. Well, a building will be packed
- 23:54tomorrow. Here come the Baylor Bears.
- 23:57Iowa State playing so well right now, Eugene, they've certainly
- 24:00cured that. Those slow starts.
- 24:03How much do you think that that was was emphasized before they
- 24:08kind of turned things around? Was that something that they,
- 24:11you know, as TJ brought it up that we, you know, we spent time
- 24:13trying to figure out why was why was we were getting off to such
- 24:17a slow start? We did AB and C and now
- 24:20seemingly they've turned the corner.
- 24:21How big of an emphasis was put on that, Eugene, do you know?
- 24:24Yeah, I've asked TJ about that directly, and he said that he
- 24:28won't put any stock into the narratives about slow starts or
- 24:31past starts, But it's been more so of a change and being more
- 24:34aggressive, being more assertive early, establishing and imposing
- 24:37themselves defensively. And we've seen them come out to
- 24:39these big runs right off the bat, just absolutely take the
- 24:42win and take the souls out of their opponents in the first
- 24:45couple of minutes. And then they come out to these
- 24:47dominating leads. And and once you have such a hot
- 24:49start like that, a fast start like that, it's really, you
- 24:53know, off to the races from there and and you don't see them
- 24:56give up that momentum. It's been nonstop 40 minutes.
- 24:59I was just imposing themselves. One thing I found interesting
- 25:03listening to TJ earlier this week is he brought up, of
- 25:06course, Tamen Lipsy and and but he brought up Nate Heisey and we
- 25:10go back to the summer and it's a conversation, Eugene, that we
- 25:13had in one of the more kind of eye opening I, I guess quotes
- 25:17maybe of the summer from TJ Otzenberger.
- 25:19Is he kind of called Nate Heisey out tough love?
- 25:22Yeah, absolutely. And they come back here after
- 25:25using the stick a little bit, coming back with the carrot and
- 25:27Nate Heisey talked about him playing with tremendous
- 25:30confidence and and having that kind of guy coming off the bench
- 25:33and Heisey's played well. I just found that interesting
- 25:35and maybe had to do things a little bit different for a fifth
- 25:37year senior. Yeah, for for Nate Heisey, it
- 25:41seems like most of his attitude change and his resurgence has
- 25:44come from just the sole fact that this is it.
- 25:46This is the last ride, this is the last season.
- 25:49There's no more next year, there's no more next summer.
- 25:51There's there's really only nine regular season games left.
- 25:54And after that, who knows what the postseason will bring.
- 25:57So he's looking to make the most of those opportunities right
- 26:00now. But when Nate Heisey, the whole
- 26:02point for him or the point of emphasis for him is now just
- 26:05being more aggressive, having the green light to shoot some
- 26:07more. And usually when they're
- 26:09basketball players, you think, hey, that's that's an easy
- 26:12concept. If my coach tells me to shoot it
- 26:14more or go after it more, no problem.
- 26:16We saw what Nate Heisey was able to do against K State.
- 26:19We saw what he was able to do at the end of last season as well.
- 26:22I don't know if it's going to be the beginning of another
- 26:25February Heisey stretch, but Iowa State will definitely
- 26:27welcome that. But when he's able to be
- 26:29assertive like that, you see how much she helps Iowa State.
- 26:33Cause when came in, Lipsy and Milan, mom Chilovich and Joshua
- 26:36Jefferson are drawing all that attention from the defense.
- 26:39And if you're going to leave him open and he's going to cash in
- 26:42on those threes and at the one point in the K State game where
- 26:45he scored eight straight points, you love to see that kind of
- 26:48production from him. Obviously he impacts winning
- 26:51with his rebounding and his defense in other ways, but if
- 26:54he's also able to add to the scoring output as well, it can
- 26:57only help the ceiling for the Cyclones.
- 26:59No doubt about it, Eugene. I don't know what it was about
- 27:02the Baylor game. I know that Munchilovich was in
- 27:04foul trouble. It was by far his worst
- 27:06offensive output in Big 12 play. This year was way back in
- 27:10January. I'm not sure you or Travis made
- 27:13the trip to Waco, but if you remember the game, what was it
- 27:16that that Baylor did to maybe limit Monchilovich?
- 27:20Because few have teams, as we've seen since that game, have been
- 27:24able to come close to holding him the way that Baylor did.
- 27:27Do you remember that game, Eugene?
- 27:29Yeah, the the foul trouble was a problem.
- 27:32I think it was also just another one of those really slow start
- 27:35for Iowa State across the board. Just offensively there wasn't
- 27:38much rhythm and when came and lips, he was tagged with those
- 27:41two fouls in the first couple of minutes of the game.
- 27:44You lose that kind of facilitator, you lose that guy
- 27:46to help make the offense flow. So I think as a result, Milliman
- 27:50Killovich suffered from came lips.
- 27:52He being relegated to the bench for that first half.
- 27:55I would say had the slow start offensively, Baylor played
- 27:58pretty well defensively. It helped that Joshua Jefferson
- 28:02was able to snag the lead at the end of the first half there with
- 28:04that three. But in in the second-half when
- 28:07Lipsy was back out there, you saw the offense blow way better.
- 28:11But I I just think it was one of those where with a tough start,
- 28:14it was tough for Montelowitz to get into a groove.
- 28:16But definitely interested to see what the rematch will look like.
- 28:21There's also a lot of talk about what they're doing on the
- 28:22boards, not on the defensive end, but the offensive
- 28:25rebounding. And TJ talked a little bit about
- 28:27when you talk about top flight programs, Florida, Houston in
- 28:30Michigan State, they go after the ball on the offensive
- 28:32boards. Take us in a little bit to that
- 28:34conversation. And do you think it is something
- 28:36that they have really identified, Hey, we're looking
- 28:38to do something a little bit different.
- 28:40It is that crash in the glass offensively.
- 28:43I think it also helps with the production and the type of
- 28:46season that Blake Buchanan has had early and in the season when
- 28:49you saw Iowa State dominating on the board and really cashing in
- 28:52those paint points and those second chance opportunities, the
- 28:55Saint John's game definitely sticks out.
- 28:57But when you're doing that early non con, you are curious, is
- 29:01this going to carry over in the later parts of the season?
- 29:03Is this not just the beginning or a blip?
- 29:06Is this more of a long term trend?
- 29:08And I think it's been impressive to see Iowa State really
- 29:10emphasize the offensive glass. We know that Joshua Jefferson as
- 29:14a big board getter, Nate Heisey as well, Blake Buchanan with his
- 29:17defensive versatility and what he provides on the glass has
- 29:21been such a huge boost so far. But also the guards will get
- 29:24after it too. You see Tame and Lipsy track
- 29:26down offensive rebounds. You see Killian Turay get it as
- 29:29well. I also think that with Milan
- 29:31Munchilovich drawing all that attention when he shoots it
- 29:35because teams are sending double teams his way, you actually get
- 29:38a four on three situation for Iowa State to capitalize on the
- 29:42glass and and potentially get the advantage on getting another
- 29:44offensive rebound. But it's definitely been a a
- 29:47big, big point of emphasis for Iowa State this year and it's
- 29:50it's been a huge part of their success.
- 29:53Yesafu is a terrific player. Likewise Carr did.
- 29:57Did TJ mention any of those two impactful players for for the
- 30:01Bears in his press conference to see this week?
- 30:04If so, what did he have to say about particularly the freshman?
- 30:06Yesafu is having a terrific year and had a huge game against
- 30:10Colorado last time out. What about those two?
- 30:12Carr, Yesafu. Yeah, both of those guys are
- 30:15just dynamic players. They're projected first round
- 30:18draft picks for the NBA. And despite Baylor's struggles
- 30:22and despite Baylor's overall team just walls through Big 12
- 30:27play, those guys have been consistent performers.
- 30:30They're definitely the strength of the Baylor roster.
- 30:32You look at a guy like Car, he's very explosive.
- 30:34He's got a 7 foot 2 wingspan. He gets after it on both ends of
- 30:38the court. And then yes, if we like you
- 30:39mentioned, 6 foot five, 215 LB freshman plays bigger than the
- 30:44than his actual size. Just has such a high motor,
- 30:47really aggressive on both ends of the floor.
- 30:49Both those guys have been electric.
- 30:51I know that there hasn't really been much consistency outside of
- 30:54them. The point guard play hasn't been
- 30:56great this year. The front court has been OK, but
- 30:58those two are are most definitely the focal points of
- 31:01the Bears offense and defense. Starting tomorrow, it'll be four
- 31:05games over 9 days after this mini break in the middle here
- 31:08after not playing since Sunday. Team ready for it.
- 31:11I mean, it feels like everything's kind of clicking,
- 31:14everything's good to go. Any concerns here as things are
- 31:17going to tighten up? And certainly it's going to ramp
- 31:19up in terms of talent. The teams are going to play.
- 31:22Yeah, you go from this quote UN quote bye week to now getting 3A
- 31:26week after especially playing two games a week for the first
- 31:30month of conference play. I think it's one of those where
- 31:33it's, you know, bring it on. There's a lot of loaded matchups
- 31:36coming down the stretch here. 5 top 15 teams over these last
- 31:40nine games. This is where we get to see, you
- 31:42know, how the Big 12 is going to shake out before the postseason.
- 31:46And with all these high caliber matchups and there's all these
- 31:49marquee games coming up, you can only get excited.
- 31:51I think they're ready. They're excited.
- 31:53They're not going to look past Baylor, TCU, but once it starts
- 31:57with this on Valentine's Day, then Houston and all after that,
- 32:00I mean, whether you're a player, coach, fan, spectator, you got
- 32:04to be excited for it. Yeah, Valentine's Day, a week
- 32:06from Saturday, just going to be or no, two weeks, right?
- 32:08One week. One week from Saturday.
- 32:10One week away. Unbelievable.

- 36:25Northwestern. Gohawks.
- 36:28Illinois 9 1/2 versus Drake tonight.
- 36:32Illinois State. Yep, goat Bulldogs all.
- 36:35Right. May Darnold combine passing
- 36:37yards closest without going overweight?
- 36:41400. 4 hundo on the button. Thanks, Wade.
- 36:44Appreciate it. And Devin is our final
- 36:48contestant. Hi, Devin.
- 36:50I'll be doing happy Super Bowl Friday.
- 36:51Happy Super Bowl Friday, right back at you, Seattle. 4 1/2 to
- 36:55New England. I'll take the Seahawks clones 14
- 36:591/2 to Baylor. I'm going to wait.
- 37:02Give me Baylor. All right, Iowa 12 1/2 point
- 37:05favorite over Northwestern. Give me Iowa.
- 37:12All right, Illinois State, a 9 1/2 point favorite tonight over
- 37:16Drake. Take my dogs, May Darnell
- 37:20combined passing yards closest without going over.
- 37:23That's the tiebreaker. Let's do 357.
- 37:29Thanks, Devin. Enjoy the games.
- 37:31Thank you. Thank you.
- 37:32Appreciate it. Appreciate the chicken coop
- 37:33again. Three locations in central Iowa.
- 37:36Well, consensus. We have breaking news.
- 37:39Uh oh. For the first time in giveaway
- 37:42history, we not have just one consensus or two consensus for
- 37:47the first time in us being together for what, almost a
- 37:50decade now? Oh.
- 37:50Yeah, yeah. We have 3 consecutive consensus.
- 37:55Choices, So the tiebreaker is probably going to come into
- 37:58play. I have a feeling now if Iowa
- 38:00State covers, Adam has won this thing, that's all it takes
- 38:03because he's the only one that picked Iowa State.
- 38:06We have never had anything close to this in.
- 38:10We do it probably 45 * a year. 450 times we've done this
- 38:15contest and never before have we had this on the final football
- 38:20Friday of your career, really. Yeah, I know.
- 38:25Weird, right? Final one and we have this.
- 38:28So it comes down to Iowa State, Baylor Adam wins.
- 38:31That's really sinking in, by the way.
- 38:32And it's gross. I had that thought coming in
- 38:35today and I hated it. Absolutely hated it.
- 38:38So historically, our listeners are wrong.
- 38:42Yes, normally. So Adam's home free.
- 38:45Adam should feel really, really good about the.
- 38:48Chicken coop website. Download the menu and start
- 38:50figuring out what you're going. To have absolutely you're
- 38:53really, really good and how about this Adam, he can just
- 38:55hedge on it now, right? He just put some bucks down and
- 38:58he can pay for his either $50.00 gift certificate or his 20
- 39:01wings. He can do that right now.
- 39:03Adam's home free because of the way that this would play that
- 39:06that's. Wild.
- 39:08The number's a little bit low in passing yards from everybody,
- 39:10too. So what what?
- 39:12What is it prop wise? It's a good question.
- 39:15I included I I I put 3 together for our TV show.
- 39:20Henderson over a cat or over half a catch over 2 1/2 yards
- 39:23reception and Darnell under 300. Under 300, under 300.
- 39:28So was that the number that was set?
- 39:29No, couldn't have been, right. Yeah, that had to be an alt.
- 39:32Yeah, number that is out there. All right, so we jump on Super
- 39:35Bowl. Well, the good thing is, you
- 39:36know, there's not very many. Problems, so you should be able
- 39:38to get these right away real quick.
- 39:40The over under for Darnold is 232 and for May is 2/24.
- 39:47All right. So that is 456 when you combine
- 39:51them together. So yeah, a little touch low by.
- 39:53And our high, our high point was 400. 400 by weight, Yeah, went
- 39:56right on the dumper. Well, good luck to all of you
- 40:00and Adam just root for I was state was he was he a go Hawks
- 40:04guy? I.
- 40:05Think he might have been? That might sting.
- 40:06Then he has to do. That so if you believe in fading
- 40:10our listeners, which historically is about 75% when
- 40:14we have consensus. It's a pretty good trend.
- 40:16That means you're on the Patriots, means you're on
- 40:18Northwestern, and that means you're on Illinois State.
- 40:21Yeah, those are the three that are going to be jumping a board.
- 40:25Out of that group, I think I feel best about the Patriots.
- 40:27You do you like the Patriots? Don't I like the defense?
- 40:31Yeah, I do too. I like the defense a lot and
- 40:36starts to get a little tight. See him Darnold tight around the
- 40:39corner. You have seen that.
- 40:41He still had the league in turnovers this year and it and
- 40:44it wasn't just interceptions, it was the fumbles that he also had
- 40:46this season. How about those prediction
- 40:49markets and what, what do they call it?
- 40:51The the phrase or the? You can bet on Chris
- 40:55Collinsworth if you'll bring up seeing ghosts, if you'll say the
- 40:59word seeing ghost at some point. So apparently.
- 41:02I think did we talk about. This early in the week at the
- 41:03Grammys, whoever hosted it was came out and said Trevor Noah.
- 41:07Yeah, Trevor Noah came out and said something about bananas.
- 41:09And if you had bananas in the prediction market, Yep.
- 41:12Well, there. And bananas wasn't a word.
- 41:14But it's just wild. These things, I don't know how
- 41:17they're legal, but they are, I guess.
- 41:19For the time being. Tom Caker will join us to kick
- 41:22off the second hour of the program.
- 41:24Mike Palm will join us in our final picks for Super Bowl
- 41:28Sunday. That's to come Miller and Condon
- 41:30on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
