Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So prime ministers and Wellington. The surgeon caucus meeting nine
- 0:02Speaker 1: thirty this morning follows reports of its MPs calling each
- 0:06Speaker 1: other doing the numbers, discussing whether to roll them. So
- 0:09Speaker 1: is he toast? Last week the peam apologized for remarks
- 0:13Speaker 1: about rot Aurora and obviously there's.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Been a bit of debate about the MMP.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Coll But we beck our leader.
- 0:20Speaker 2: You do you have confidence in the Prime minister one
- 0:22Speaker 2: hundred and fifty percent? Here's the man and here's the boss.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I mean, on what they're doing and what's happening.
- 0:28Speaker 2: All I know is we've got a meeting tomorrow nine
- 0:30Speaker 2: point thirty and Wellington.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Bridget more than political commentator with me this morning. Bridget,
- 0:34Speaker 1: good morning, good morning. So what's going to happen today?
- 0:37Speaker 2: Well, I mean, the number one thing that has to
- 0:39Speaker 2: happen is that they have to emerge from that caucus
- 0:42Speaker 2: meeting with a definative answer on who is going to
- 0:45Speaker 2: be leading this country and who's going to be taken
- 0:47Speaker 2: into the election. They can't let this drag on any longer.
- 0:51Speaker 1: If Luxon comes back and as leader after the second vote,
- 0:56Speaker 1: can you credibly say yeah, we're back behind our leader.
- 0:59Speaker 1: If you're having two spells in four.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Months, it's going to be really difficult for them to
- 1:03Speaker 2: demonstrate that they are a unified caucus, and it is
- 1:07Speaker 2: going to be difficult for them to demonstrate that this
- 1:09Speaker 2: kind of speculation is not going to plague them all
- 1:11Speaker 2: the way through to election.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Dame and beyond right. Sure we might vote national and
- 1:16Speaker 1: elect Luxe and as Prime minister, but will he stayed
- 1:19Speaker 1: prime minister? Those questions too.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, And I think that's what a number of
- 1:25Speaker 2: MPs are looking down the future. Obviously they all want
- 1:27Speaker 2: to be there for another term, but they're also looking
- 1:31Speaker 2: at what that second term might look like.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Then there's snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. That
- 1:36Speaker 1: is a possibility if you switch. It's an unknown quantity.
- 1:40Speaker 1: It's looking like Erica Stamford would be at the top
- 1:42Speaker 1: of the ticket, but untested, don't know a lot of
- 1:45Speaker 1: question marks.
- 1:47Speaker 2: There's a lot of really actually tested I think senior
- 1:50Speaker 2: ministers that have spent a lot of time around politics
- 1:54Speaker 2: and actually delivering. So don't think you can say it's
- 1:57Speaker 2: completely unknown and quantum. I think a lot of people
- 2:00Speaker 2: actually know a lot about these different politicians and what
- 2:02Speaker 2: they might look like as.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Leaders Bridget, what do you think they should do?
- 2:08Speaker 2: I think the number one thing they have to do
- 2:09Speaker 2: is stop talking about themselves and get back to actually
- 2:12Speaker 2: talking about what voters want, because regardless of whether they
- 2:15Speaker 2: make a leadership change or not, they're still looking at
- 2:18Speaker 2: the possibility of being a one term government.
- 2:20Speaker 1: No one knows what's going to happen today because people
- 2:23Speaker 1: who said that they're going to vote one way then
- 2:25Speaker 1: change their mind in the morning of and get nervous.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Everyone's going to the bathroom a lot. What are you
- 2:32Speaker 1: expecting they will do? Like, what is your gut tell you?
- 2:35Speaker 2: I think it's going to be a really long meeting.
- 2:38Speaker 2: There's no set process for how this has to run out,
- 2:41Speaker 2: so they could go through a number of different ways
- 2:43Speaker 2: of different votes, you know, confidence votes, then choosing to
- 2:47Speaker 2: leadership voters that confidence vote doesn't succeed. So I think
- 2:50Speaker 2: it's going to be a long, long morning, maybe early afternoon.
