- 0:32PM Denver time. Oh man, that's a lot of fun.
- 0:38I really do love Alumni's of the podcasts that come on here Now,
- 0:42this guy's not an alumni. He's barely an alumni of a
- 0:45school. He's that young and green in
- 0:48this world. Introduce yourself here, Jake.
- 0:50So my name is Jake Dagenshan. I'm the first coach and
- 0:54recruiting coordinator right now at the University of Lynchburg
- 0:56in central Virginia. Now, how many years or how many
- 0:58conventions have you come to? Here, This is my second
- 1:01convention, so last year was my first, yeah.
- 1:03That's where we first met, yeah. But yeah, so.
- 1:07Been a lot of fun year two in college coaching, been.
- 1:08Doing. Coaching as a whole for 4 1/2
- 1:11years and it's high school coaching while I was still in
- 1:13college. And how different as you
- 1:17approach this week, this year, this week, how different are you
- 1:20approaching it than last week when you were green and you
- 1:22know, probably wide eyed and like, Oh my God, everybody's
- 1:24here. There's so many things I can do
- 1:26on the schedule. How are you approaching it
- 1:28differently this year? I really think that the biggest
- 1:31thing that I've been trying to do and to approach differently
- 1:33is just. Taking in as much information as
- 1:35possible, meeting as many people as possible, taking everything
- 1:37kind of day by day, and taking each experience as as its own.
- 1:42And what are you like maybe you did this last year, but is there
- 1:45anything that when you looked at the schedule you highlighted
- 1:47double like you highlighted in circle like I am not in the
- 1:50scene this what that might have been?
- 1:52For the convention, probably Sean Denard's speech, his
- 1:58symposium when he was talking about, I think.
- 2:00I remember correctly. It was like neuromuscular
- 2:02adaptations in throwers coming from Olympic weightlifting,
- 2:05because that's a huge part of what I do.
- 2:07So I also do a lot of the strength conditioning
- 2:08programming for our throwers. So getting an opportunity to
- 2:11kind of hear him speak about that and take what he talked
- 2:14about, translate to what I do for our program and everything
- 2:17like that, help our kids build up.
- 2:18So that was, that was the big one This year.
- 2:21I think Don Babbitt Symposium is gonna be a big one.
- 2:23That's I mean, yeah. Come on, #legend.
- 2:26Brother Yeah, yeah, yeah. Give me a break, yeah.
- 2:27What's he Speaking of, you know? I don't remember.
- 2:30I should probably know that, right?
- 2:31It is double highlighted. But, but who cares if if Don
- 2:35Babbitt is on the schedule and he's going to talk about tic tac
- 2:37toe strategies, Well, I'm gonna learn to play Tic Tac toe.
- 2:40Don talks. He's one of the people.
- 2:41Boosh xators. One that's like, oh, they're
- 2:43talking. All right, well, I'm just gonna
- 2:45go because I'll learn something. Yeah, you know when the when the
- 2:47greats are speaking, because as soon as they start talking,
- 2:49everyone else is dead silent. They're writing things down,
- 2:52yeah. I to give a little bit of a
- 2:55preview. So season four of the Gill off
- 2:57and explanations podcast starts on January 2nd this year and
- 3:01we're kicking off season four with Dan half.
- 3:04And as we were getting ready to interview Dan a month or so ago
- 3:07another coach I don't know if he wants me to tell the story so I
- 3:10won't name him but he said hey here's my Dan patch story he was
- 3:14speaking and this was recently this coach been coaching for a
- 3:16long time now. This ain't no rookie like you.
- 3:19He said all I did was just sit there and write note like I was
- 3:21front row and I've been coaching for 30 years and I just sat
- 3:23there in the front row and he goes and I remember the very
- 3:25last thing I just wrote. I am so dumb cuz Dan is so.
- 3:30So, so knowledgeable. Well, Jake, so we're gonna have
- 3:32a little fun here today. I've got 100.
- 3:34I'll be cheating. I got 100 random questions.
- 3:37And you know you guys that are out there in live world, you
- 3:39know how random these are. One through 100.
- 3:41You get to pick the number that we're gonna ask.
- 3:43Let's. Go 52.
- 3:46What's the significance of 52? That was my first football
- 3:50number back in like, game football, yeah.
- 3:53Let's get Tron, man. If you could be in in in any
- 3:57video game, which one would it be?
- 3:59Like you in it, man, Like you you you attacking Donkey Kong or
- 4:01something. Like what game would you be in
- 4:03Member Tron. They were in the game.
- 4:04Yeah, yeah. That's a tough one right now.
- 4:08Probably God of War 'cause I've just been.
- 4:10I'm not a huge gamer, but I haven't seen all the videos on
- 4:12that and that. I played some intex.
- 4:13Yeah, but that that game looks. Would you?
- 4:16Be the crados. Is the name.
- 4:18Would you? Be him?
- 4:19Oh yeah, that'd. Be so cool, monsters.
- 4:22Now being crados would be so cool, just have like the power
- 4:24and be like that big pop guy and everything would be so.
- 4:26Much fun. I just want the tattoos that he
- 4:27had. That's always got the coolest he
- 4:28rocks the bald head with. The nice wire.
- 4:30Yeah. Alright, you get one more
- 4:32question. Let's.
- 4:35Go 60. Three, What's What's the
- 4:37significance of 60? Three all.
- 4:40Right, man. Let's talk about some chill
- 4:42time. You're back in high school.
- 4:44There's no sports practice after school.
- 4:46What are you doing and with whom, just to chill?
- 4:50Probably not the most chill activity, but working out,
- 4:53honestly, just something about it, so relaxing and having like
- 4:57that set goal, pop the headphones in and everything
- 4:59like that, wasn't it? You know, I'm big rock fans, so
- 5:01always rock big. Big A/C DC fans.
- 5:04Yeah, so blaring that and just going after a really hard lift,
- 5:06having a lot of fun with that. And you know, friends tag along
- 5:09that kind of things always. Sometimes.
- 5:10Well, wrap us up here, man. What are you looking forward to
- 5:12the most in the 2023 season? Oh, geez.
- 5:15Probably just. Overall, the experience, the
- 5:17experience with with the athletes and everything like
- 5:19that and watching them grow and develop, that's been the biggest
- 5:21thing I learned in year one was just everything you can do to
- 5:24help the kids get better, help them grow, develop athletically,
- 5:27personally and everything that they're doing.
- 5:29And seeing the growth that they made from last year to this year
- 5:32was incredible. And seeing what they're going to
- 5:34do in the 2023 season to be even better.
- 5:36You know, I just hope for you. And I just know because I know
- 5:39it's going to be true. It's just a long, satisfying
- 5:42career, man. You know, it's it's it's great.
- 5:44I remember my first. You know, a couple of years
- 5:46coaching and just, you know, it's everything.
- 5:48It's all consuming, man. You gotta know.
- 5:50You gotta think long term, man. I saw the greatest thing on
- 5:52Twitter of all places. Of course, Kimber, who was, and
- 5:56I'm so sorry, I want to say it was Brett Barkolomew, I think is
- 5:58his name. I think he's the one that said
- 5:59it. But he talked about just like
- 6:02you periodize periodization stuff in your athletes periodize
- 6:05your career. Like, think about what you're
- 6:07doing there, because I think you know you've got the things up
- 6:10here and then here to have a long career, we just can't have
- 6:13you. Burnt out and be done at 3035.
- 6:17Alright man, let's take our selfie.
