- 0:13What's up, everybody? Welcome back to Heart Check

- 0:18Yeah, let's go. And I'm so excited to be back
- 0:22with you guys. If you have not yet, subscribe
- 0:24below, leave a comment, leave a like.
- 0:26I hope you guys are enjoying this deep dive through the
- 0:30Gospel of John. We're going to continue with our
- 0:32series today. We're not going to mess around.
- 0:34We are still in John chapter 1 and we are going to be in verses
- 0:3829 through 34 today. And it reads like this.
- 0:43The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,
- 0:46look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
- 0:51And then verse 30 He is the one I was talking about when I said,
- 0:55a man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he
- 0:59existed long before me. And verse 31 I did not recognize
- 1:04him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so
- 1:08that he might be revealed to Israel.
- 1:11Verse 32 Then John testified, I saw the Holy Spirit descending
- 1:15like a dove from heaven and resting upon him.
- 1:19I didn't know He was the one, but when God sent me to baptize
- 1:22with water, he told me the one on whom you see the Spirit
- 1:27descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy
- 1:31Spirit. Verse 34.
- 1:33I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that He is the chosen
- 1:39one of God. Let's go.
- 1:42I love this. So John again, taking his time
- 1:46through this chapter to unpacked who Jesus is.
- 1:50As we've talked about from week 1, Mark, sorry, Matthew, Mark
- 1:55and Luke being the synoptic gospels, the see together
- 1:58gospels that really focus on what Jesus did, the miracles,
- 2:03the the things he said, the things he did.
- 2:05But John, the Gospel John focusing on who Jesus is in that
- 2:10last verse right there, that he is the chosen one of God, he is
- 2:15the Messiah. But if we go back up to verse
- 2:1829, notice the significance of how John announces Jesus coming
- 2:24toward them that he says, look, the Lamb of God who takes away
- 2:28the sin of the world. This focus of identifying Jesus
- 2:33as the Lamb of God. This is a very monumental
- 2:37theological point that John is speaking.
- 2:41John the Baptist is pointing out that Jesus that we learned about
- 2:45in the Old Testament, that he's speaking towards everyone who's
- 2:49hearing this, that he is making a theological connection to what
- 2:53has been learned in the Old Testament in the Torah for these
- 2:57religious leaders and for these Jewish people that knew what the
- 3:00Lamb of God meant. And if you're listening and
- 3:03you're saying, well, what does that mean?
- 3:04Pastor Los in the Old Testament in Exodus chapter 12, if you if
- 3:10you read through Exodus, God sends plagues upon Egypt and the
- 3:14last plague that he sends is the Angel of death.
- 3:18And the Angel of death is coming to kill every first born in
- 3:21Egypt. And we learn that the Pharaoh
- 3:23whose heart's hardened and who will not let the Israelite
- 3:26people go, he has a first born that would be the heir to the
- 3:30throne. And so God says this sends this
- 3:33next plague, but he tells his chosen people that it's coming
- 3:36in the way for the Angel of death to go over their home and
- 3:40to not kill the first borns within their families.
- 3:44He tells them to kill an unblemished lamb and to take the
- 3:50blood of that lamb and to put it over their doorframes.
- 3:53And so when the Angel of death comes to Egypt, it will go over
- 3:58the homes that are covered in the unblemished lamb of God's
- 4:02blood that's over their doorframe.
- 4:05And this is a a depiction and a future shadowing prophecy of
- 4:10Jesus, that Jesus is going to be the Lamb of God that dies for
- 4:16the sin of the world, that his blood that was shed on the
- 4:19cross. Now that when we put our faith
- 4:21in Jesus that the Lamb of God now covers us, and when the
- 4:25Angel of death comes, it goes over us because we are now saved
- 4:29by the blood of Jesus. That Jesus is the perfect
- 4:32unblemished Lamb of God that was sent to this world to die for
- 4:36our sins. And just like in the Old
- 4:39Testament that the unblemished lamb helped the Angel of death
- 4:42go over the House of those that were covered by the Lamb's
- 4:46blood. Now we who have put our faith in
- 4:49Jesus are covered by the blood of Jesus.
- 4:51And This is why this is so significant that John the
- 4:54Baptist uses this language of Jesus.
- 4:58Now when Jesus is coming toward them, he yells, look, the Lamb
- 5:02of God who takes away the sin of the world.
- 5:04But it's kind of interesting that sin is not is not plural.
- 5:10It's not sins of the world. It's sin of the world that the
- 5:13whole world is in, sin that every single person is in sin.
- 5:20If you have not put your faith in Jesus, you are in sin that
- 5:25you are spiritually dead. And without faith in Christ you
- 5:29will stay spiritually dead. And after this life there is
- 5:32only two options. And so for those who have put
- 5:36their faith in Jesus, they find eternal life.
- 5:40But as John is announcing to the crowd that here comes the Lamb
- 5:44of God who takes away the sin of the world, that Jesus's death on
- 5:48the cross was final. It was the the once and for all
- 5:53sacrifice of God to clean the sin of the world.
- 5:57That anyone who puts their faith in Jesus's life, death and
- 6:01resurrection, that now you have eternal life because Jesus was
- 6:06the perfect Lamb of God, the only one who could live a
- 6:10perfect life and die a death that was unblemished with no
- 6:14sin. Because he took our sin upon
- 6:16himself and died a death that we deserve.
- 6:18And now through our faith in him, because of three days
- 6:20later, Jesus raises from the grave and now we are made right
- 6:24with God our Father, and we are given eternal life.
- 6:27And so the sin of the world Jesus had Jesus was sent by God
- 6:33to be the Lamb of God to die a death that we deserve so that
- 6:36three days later he could race from the grave, defeating sin
- 6:39and death. And anyone who's put their faith
- 6:41in him will receive eternal life.
- 6:43In Romans 581 of my favorite verses it says but God
- 6:47demonstrates his own love for us in this while we were still
- 6:51sinners, Christ died for us. God demonstrated his love by
- 6:56sending his Son to die a death that we deserve.
- 7:00And while we were still rebellious, still wanting
- 7:02nothing to do with God, still in our sin, He died for our sin.
- 7:07And that through Jesus's death and resurrection, we put our
- 7:10faith in him, we can have eternal life.
- 7:14That God loved you and loves me so much, love this whole world
- 7:19so much. That he sent his Son to die for
- 7:22us. That while we were still
- 7:24sinners, while we were still rebellious, while we still
- 7:26wanted nothing to do with God, Christ died for us.
- 7:29That's incredible. And I hope you don't forget that
- 7:32truth today. And I hope if you're listening
- 7:34to this and you have not put your faith in Jesus, I hope you
- 7:36hear the truth of the gospel message today that Jesus loves
- 7:40you, that He created you, that he died a death that you deserve
- 7:44so that you could receive eternal life through your faith
- 7:47in Him. That he was the Lamb of God.
- 7:50That His blood covers you from the wrath and the judgment that
- 7:53comes for those who do not put their faith in Jesus.
- 7:56Because all of this world is in sin.
- 7:58All of this world is broken. Everyone needs a Savior.
- 8:01And I know who that Savior is. And I'm telling you right now
- 8:04that His name is Jesus. Put your faith in him and
- 8:07receive eternal life and be covered by his blood, that now
- 8:11when God the Father looks down on you, he sees his unblemished
- 8:14Lamb of God, He sees Jesus Christ.
- 8:18But John continues to say in verse 30, he is the one I was
- 8:23talking about when I said a man is coming after me who is far
- 8:26greater than I am, for he existed long before me.
- 8:31So John is reiterating the points he's been making over and
- 8:34again when he said that I'm not even worthy to be his slave and
- 8:37untie the straps of his sandal, that Jesus is God, that he is
- 8:43God and flesh Emmanuel, as we've talked about over and over
- 8:46again. And John is just reinstating
- 8:48that you guys, these Pharisees who have come and asked him
- 8:51these questions, questions of who are you?
- 8:52He's like, listen, Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the
- 8:55sin of the world. He is here, he is in the crowd,
- 8:58here he comes, Behold him. Focus on him because he is the
- 9:03one that I've been talking about, that this is the one
- 9:06who's far greater than me, far greater than any of us.
- 9:09He is the name above all names, that this is the Son of God.
- 9:15And I love that John said I did not recognize him as the
- 9:18Messiah. Even John is honest and
- 9:20transparent about this, that he did not recognize Jesus as the
- 9:23Messiah, the anointed, the one who was promised long ago.
- 9:27But I have been baptizing with water so that he might be
- 9:31revealed to Israel again. John the Baptist is the voice
- 9:36shouting in the wilderness to prepare the way for the Messiah,
- 9:39the Lord's coming, and Jesus is here.
- 9:42John's saying he's here right now, behold him right here, that
- 9:46I've been preaching this message, preparing the way for
- 9:50the one who is far greater than I am, and he is with us.
- 9:54And then John testified again, testifies about the truth I saw.
- 10:00And so one thing I want to touch on, sorry before I dive in a
- 10:02little bit more. This being stated, this timeline
- 10:06when John now saw Jesus coming toward him, this took place post
- 10:11John the Baptist baptizing Jesus in the timeline of the Gospel of
- 10:15John. So when John is seeing Jesus
- 10:17come towards him, this is post John baptizing Jesus and seeing
- 10:23the events of of Jesus's baptism.
- 10:25So this would even be post Jesus being tested in the wilderness
- 10:29for 40 days and 40 nights. So this is post that, so now
- 10:33we'll get back to it. So in verse 32, then John
- 10:35testified, I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from
- 10:41heaven and resting upon him. So now John's starting to
- 10:44explain and give a picture to what he experienced when he
- 10:48baptized Jesus, which is incredible.
- 10:50So John's saying, I saw the Holy Spirit descend like a dove from
- 10:54heaven resting upon him. But verse 33, I didn't know he
- 10:57was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he
- 11:02told me the one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is
- 11:08the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.
- 11:12So God is letting John know that the one who who the Holy Spirit
- 11:15descends and rests upon that is the Messiah.
- 11:19That's the anointed one. That's the one that I have sent
- 11:22God with us, that He has come to be the Lamb of God to take away
- 11:27the sin of the world. But it's interesting that God is
- 11:31giving this to John to give him this for sure sign to know the
- 11:35Messiah, that he'd be the one on whom the Holy Spirit descended
- 11:38upon from heaven. John was a reliable witness
- 11:42regarding Jesus because he had been confirming evidence from
- 11:47God. John is saying God told me this
- 11:50and then I saw this. So this is the truth of God,
- 11:53that Jesus is the Messiah, the one we've been waiting for.
- 11:58And that's just incredible that now we have John testifying of
- 12:03Christ, that he's letting everyone know who's listening,
- 12:05everyone he's been baptizing, that this is the one I've been
- 12:08preparing the way for. Verse 34, I saw this happen to
- 12:14Jesus, so I testify that he is the chosen 1 of God.
- 12:21John again testifying to the truth that he has seen and I, I
- 12:27just wanted to sit on that again, that witnessing
- 12:31witnesses, witnesses, people who have witnesses, John saying I
- 12:35have seen this. Witnesses are not neutral.
- 12:38They're committed to the truth of their testimony or they are
- 12:41unreliable witnesses. John was a reliable witness and
- 12:45knew who Jesus was because of what he saw with his own eyes.
- 12:51And going back to what we talked about now, week after week, you
- 12:55have, if you've experienced Jesus, you've put your faith in
- 12:58him. The Holy Spirit's filled you.
- 13:00You've seen Jesus do what he's done in your life.
- 13:03Go and testify about that, that you are a reliable witness
- 13:07because you have Jesus living inside of you, that Jesus has
- 13:11saved you, that you know the truth of God.
- 13:13That is a miracle within itself, that the Holy Spirit has filled
- 13:16you and given you an understanding of God's Word.
- 13:19As we read in First Corinthians 118, the cross is foolishness to
- 13:24those who are perishing that people who don't know Jesus,
- 13:27people who the veil has not been lifted when they hear us talk
- 13:30about that our God we worship sent himself in human form as a
- 13:37baby to then live a perfect life, but then die on a cross
- 13:41the worst way possible to die. But then three days later he
- 13:45magically rose and gave him before that was born of a virgin
- 13:49by the power of the Holy Spirit. People are like, that makes no
- 13:53sense that the fact that our Savior died on a cross for us is
- 13:58foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us, it's the
- 14:01saving power of God that we fully believe it because we know
- 14:06it's true 'cause we've experienced that truth, we've
- 14:09read that truth, we've studied it.
- 14:11And so I want to tell you today, you are a reliable witness.
- 14:15Go testify about Jesus Christ to anyone and everyone, just as
- 14:20John did, just as John is letting them know that this is
- 14:23the Lamb of God, that he's the only one who can cover you, That
- 14:28the Angel of death will come to every household and every person
- 14:32in this world. That no one can escape death in
- 14:36this world. But there is one who came and
- 14:40died, but then rose again, that he defeated death and sin.
- 14:45And if you put your faith in him, Angel of death will go
- 14:49over, your household will go over.
- 14:51Your life will not come and visit you because you will have
- 14:54eternal life in Christ Jesus because of your faith in him.
- 14:59And so that's my prayer today, that you realize that the
- 15:03perfect Lamb of God has already come and has already rose from
- 15:06the grave and now is sitting at the right hand throne of God.
- 15:09And if you put your faith in him, you will receive eternal
- 15:13life. The Lamb of God is worthy of our
- 15:16praise and he is the one who takes away the sin of the world.
- 15:20Praise Jesus. Thank you Jesus, I love you so
- 15:23much. I thank you guys for being here
- 15:25with me. We'll get back at it next week
- 15:27and keep going through this gospel.
- 15:28John, I hope you're enjoying this.
- 15:30I love you guys. Let me pray for you so we can
- 15:32get up out of here. Lord Jesus, we love you and God
- 15:36we thank you for who you are. God, thank you for sending your
- 15:40son Jesus. And Jesus, thank you for being
- 15:43the perfect Lamb of God to die a death that we deserve.
- 15:46Lord, that we're unworthy of. But that's who you are, that you
- 15:49sent your son 'cause you love the world that much, that while
- 15:52we were still sinners, you demonstrated your love in this,
- 15:55that you sent your Son to die for our sin.
- 15:58And I thank you so much. The Holy Spirit continue to fill
- 16:00me and lead me into all truth that reminds me of who you are,
- 16:05that fills me with the truth of God.
- 16:07That I can go out and be a testifier to anyone and everyone
- 16:11who does not know the hope that I carry, that I can spread the
- 16:14good news so that hopefully others will come to put their
- 16:17faith in you, Jesus, and receive eternal life.
- 16:19We love you, we thank you, and we pray.
- 16:20All this in Jesus name, Amen. I love you guys, God bless.
