- 0:37After being asked to speak tonight, I started reflecting on
- 0:41all the Ash, Wednesday Services. I have attended throughout my
- 0:46years, in my memory, they were like Sunday morning Services,
- 0:50except for two things, they included being marked by ashes
- 0:56and it was also the day where many people restarted, their New
- 1:00Year's resolutions. I didn't know what a normal
- 1:05theme for an Ash Wednesday. Service was turns out.
- 1:10The common themes, are sin, repentance and death, the
- 1:14feel-good messages. Luckily, I have a lot of
- 1:19experience with everything I've listed above.
- 1:23I've been sitting for as long as I can remember.
- 1:26And once I understood how my sins separated me from God and I
- 1:31was Working on that relationship.
- 1:33I started repenting. I've also been surrounded by a
- 1:37lot of death growing up. I was part of a church group
- 1:42called the not-ready-for-prime-time
- 1:44singers. We regularly visited shut-ins to
- 1:48sing hymns. And this is where my love for
- 1:50old, hymns, and older people stem from Since I started
- 1:57attending with my mother at the age of two, this led me to start
- 2:02attending my friends funerals by the age of six and regularly.
- 2:07This prepared me for multiple of my family members, passing most
- 2:11recently, my mother who passed this past October after her
- 2:17third battle with cancer death is an inevitable part of life.
- 2:23Some would say A physical death is one of the consequences God
- 2:29describes for Adam and Genesis chapter 3.
- 2:32When God Says cursed is the ground because of you through
- 2:37painful toil you will eat food from it.
- 2:40All the days of your life, it will produce thorns and thistles
- 2:44for you. And you will eat the plants of
- 2:47the field by the sweat of your brow.
- 2:49You will eat your food until you return to the ground since from
- 2:54it. You were taken.
- 2:55For dust, you are and dust, you will return.
- 3:00When we look at the creation story in Genesis, we have a
- 3:03beautiful world where God and man, dwell together in a
- 3:07creation. That is safe allowing man to
- 3:09live freely without alarm uncomfortably freely for many of
- 3:15us since they were naked. I've heard some interesting
- 3:19speakers say that the serpent was the one telling the truth
- 3:24and God had lied to Adam and Eve.
- 3:27God said to Adam and Eve, you must not eat from the Tree of
- 3:31the knowledge of Good and Evil. For when you eat from it you
- 3:34will certainly die. The serpent told Eve.
- 3:39You will certainly not die. After Adam and Eve ate from the
- 3:44fruit, they didn't drop dead so the serpent must have been
- 3:49telling the truth, right? There are two types of death,
- 3:57the physical death, where our bodies, stop functioning, and
- 4:00our soul leaves the body. The physical death is what Adam
- 4:05and Eve anticipated as the consequence for disobeying God.
- 4:10But what they came to regret was their spiritual death.
- 4:14Spiritual death is when the soul is separated from God, which
- 4:18immediately resulted after Adam and Eve disobeyed God.
- 4:23Paul describes it, as being alienated from the life of God.
- 4:29When we sin, we are creating distance from ourselves and God,
- 4:33which if not reconciled before, our physical death can lead to
- 4:36an eternal separation from God. Why would anyone want to be
- 4:41separated from God even temporarily.
- 4:46I often reflect on the words of Dallas Willard when he said,
- 4:51when the serpent undertook to draw Eve away from God, he did
- 4:56not hit her with a stick, but with an idea, He did not hit her
- 5:01with a stick, but with an idea. I would argue that the majority
- 5:07of our sins stem from the same ideas that the serpent convinced
- 5:12Eve of That God must be withholding blessings from us
- 5:18what? God, prohibits must outweigh and
- 5:20outnumber all that he has provided for our pleasure and
- 5:23provision. That God doesn't care about us,
- 5:28God is only focused on rules and ultimately that God and His word
- 5:33can't be trusted. We probably don't want to admit
- 5:37that you may be thinking to yourself.
- 5:40That I Jeremy, don't understand the full context of your
- 5:45situation. I don't know all of your
- 5:48stories, but I know that our way of thinking doesn't normally
- 5:52stray from the creation account written over 3,000 years ago.
- 5:58When confronted with his sin, Adam gets defensive saying the
- 6:02woman you put here with me, she gave me some fruit for the tree
- 6:09and I ate it. We may say to God, it wasn't my
- 6:12fault. This other person who you
- 6:15created led me astray from what you have for my life.
- 6:20Or God, if you only knew the people I had to deal with, you
- 6:24would know, it's nearly impossible to love them.
- 6:28And yet, God loves them. Shouldn't that be enough for us
- 6:32to do the same? If we get to the center of it
- 6:36all we can see. The atom is really saying the
- 6:39woman you put here with me, she gave me some fruit for the tree
- 6:44and I ate it. God why would there be a
- 6:48tempting option that isn't what you desire for me?
- 6:52Even when God has provided all the trees in the garden for Adam
- 6:55and Eve to enjoy. They asked why can't we have
- 6:59this one? Why wouldn't you want me to
- 7:02enjoy all of the things even if they're sinful?
- 7:07God. It is your fault that sin is so
- 7:10tempting. Sin can taste.
- 7:13So sweet and sinning can feel so good.
- 7:17Why don't you want that for me? God, the Creator desires to be
- 7:24in relationship with us and genuine relationships.
- 7:27Cannot be forced. This is why God provides Us free
- 7:31will. God, could literally give us the
- 7:33world with one bad option and we would question his goodness.
- 7:40The things God provides for our pleasure is insurmountable and
- 7:44yet we focus on the things that he prohibits.
- 7:47God prohibits them for our good. Not to hold back.
- 7:51Good from us. Like the eating of the fruit,
- 7:57our sins may not cause immediate hurt.
- 8:00They may even taste sweet like most fruits do, but our sins
- 8:05that feel good in the moment can still cause us harm by
- 8:09separating us from God. Coming from someone that has
- 8:14added sugar to Southern sweet tea.
- 8:16I can testify that what tastes good can do harm to you.
- 8:23My dentist has reminded me of that almost every visit though
- 8:28extra extra sweet tea doesn't make me drop from a heart
- 8:32attack. It does harm to my teeth and
- 8:35probably my nutrition. In order to fix the damage, I go
- 8:40to the dentist even though the dentist doesn't harm me
- 8:44visiting, the dentist, almost always hurts.
- 8:48We'll do everything to avoid God's discipline.
- 8:50That may not feel the best following God's will for our
- 8:54lives. Does not always lead to
- 8:55immediate gratification. Sometimes our sins do and we try
- 9:00to ignore the long-term harm that our sins calls us.
- 9:05It is especially hard to not conform to the patterns of the
- 9:08world. When that is what we are
- 9:09surrounded by. We need to trust God when he
- 9:13tells us to avoid something, because if we don't listen to
- 9:16him, we should most certainly die.
- 9:22Ash Wednesday starts, our journey to the Cross where Jesus
- 9:27endured all the consequences for our sins.
- 9:31Jesus wore a crown of thorns from the grounds that were
- 9:35cursed after Adam and Eve, ate of the fruit Jesus Took on the
- 9:39weight of our sins and suffered the consequence of death.
- 9:45Thanks be to God. The story doesn't end there.
- 9:49In Christ's Resurrection, he conquered not only physical
- 9:52death, but spiritual death so that we could be reconciled to
- 9:55God, no longer separated due to our sin.
- 10:00And our reading reading from Ephesians, it says, but God is
- 10:04so rich in Mercy and he loved us so much that even though we were
- 10:10dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised
- 10:13Christ from the dead, it is only by God's grace that you have
- 10:18been saved. if we are content with what God has provided us,
- 10:27And we trust in his word. What could lead us to sin?
- 10:37And I think that is the purpose of Ash Wednesday that we repent
- 10:44of our sins that lead us to spiritual death and separate us
- 10:48from God. We should spend lent being
- 10:51especially intentional about building our trust in God, and
- 10:55His word, putting aside, other things of this world.
- 11:00In order for us to rely on God to sustain us like only he can
