- 0:00Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:06Speaker 2: All right, well, you know it's the weekend of August seventh,
- 0:09Speaker 2: and I have to say.
- 0:14Speaker 1: That Ry McMahon firstly kicking things off with an incredible,
- 0:19Speaker 1: incredible sacrifice fly and after midnight to secure a Yankees
- 0:27Speaker 1: extra innings win, snapping the Braves eight game win streak.
- 0:31Speaker 2: So major thing in Ben Rice coming through bottom of
- 0:34Speaker 2: the ninth, defensive flashes from Lombard.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Junior again in the tenth, and then Luist go to
- 0:39Speaker 1: see a junior going all the way up to shallow right.
- 0:42Speaker 2: To make the over the shoulder grab. Pretty remarkable.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Willie May is like, as my friend Steve said, happy
- 0:50Speaker 1: birthday weekend.
- 0:51Speaker 2: By the way, with my friend and this.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Podcast group of great guests, we had Sherry, it's her birthday.
- 1:05Speaker 1: But I won't also say August seventh is National Purple
- 1:09Speaker 1: Heart Day.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Now we all know the controversies around.
- 1:13Speaker 1: The purple heart, whether it was John Kerry or I
- 1:17Speaker 1: think Tim Wallas had something with his purple heart, whether
- 1:20Speaker 1: it was stolen valor or not.
- 1:21Speaker 2: But I digress.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I look more into this because of this National Purple
- 1:27Speaker 1: Heart Day. First of all, one point eight million US
- 1:31Speaker 1: soldiers have been honored with a purple Heart, which is
- 1:39Speaker 1: given to members who are wounded or killed in comment
- 1:42Speaker 1: honoring their military service.
- 1:45Speaker 2: And on August seventh, seventeen eighty.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Two, that is by Matt Standards, six years after the
- 1:52Speaker 1: birth of our nation, George Washington created the Purple Heart
- 2:02Speaker 1: as a general and at the time it was the
- 2:07Speaker 1: badge of military merit, and the badge itself, the.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Middle of itself, actually has.
- 2:17Speaker 1: A profile of George Washington has awarded for wounds or
- 2:19Speaker 1: sacrifice caused by enemy actions. In honor of those with
- 2:25Speaker 1: Purple Heart recognition, communities often light their buildings in purple
- 2:30Speaker 1: simonies and share support for military families. There's also a
- 2:38Speaker 1: National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in the Newburgh, New York,
- 2:46Speaker 1: which is held at historic Washington's headquarters. So the National
- 2:51Speaker 1: Purple Heart Hall of Honor, and also the USO.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Wrote this today Tomorrow's Purple Heart Day.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Today's Purple Heart Day, when we honor service members wounded
- 3:10Speaker 1: or killed in action while serving our country. We're hoping
- 3:14Speaker 1: to get twenty five thousand people to sign their card
- 3:18Speaker 1: for these heroes, and there's an opportunity to donate to
- 3:21Speaker 1: the USO for a Purple Heart Day.
- 3:23Speaker 2: So I'll drop that link again. Another organization that's not
- 3:26Speaker 2: paying me to highlight them. I just feel called to it.
- 3:31Speaker 1: But imagine one point eight million medals have been awarded
- 3:37Speaker 1: since its inception in seventeen eighty two.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Seventeen eighty two, the.
- 3:45Speaker 1: USO goes on the list nine things you should know
- 3:50Speaker 1: about the Purple Heart I written yesterday, August sixth, twenty
- 3:58Speaker 1: twenty six. The Purple Heart was one of the first
- 4:09Speaker 1: military medals given to all ranks.
- 4:16Speaker 2: It was a military medal by the people and of
- 4:19Speaker 2: the people.
- 4:20Speaker 1: It was one of the first awards of military history
- 4:22Speaker 1: that could be given to lower ranking ranking enlisted soldiers
- 4:27Speaker 1: or non commissioned officers for their outstanding service.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Today, US service members of any rank.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Who have been wounded or killed in enemy actions are
- 4:38Speaker 1: qualified to receive a Purple Heart.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Army General U S.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Army General Douglas MacArthur helped gain the Purple Heart its
- 4:53Speaker 1: recognition by UH giving its name in nineteen thirty two
- 5:00Speaker 1: and modern day look. MacArthur wanted to refresh and renamed
- 5:05Speaker 1: the award in time for the bi centennial of George
- 5:09Speaker 1: Washington's birthday.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Worked with the Washington Commission.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Of Fine Arts, and Elizabeth will a heraldry specialist in
- 5:16Speaker 1: the Army's Office the Quartermaster General, to design the medal,
- 5:20Speaker 1: which features.
- 5:20Speaker 2: George Washington's likeness.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Now they list some famous winners recipients, not winners, recipients.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Of the Purple Heart.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Charles Bronson, James Garner, Rod Serling, Kurt Vonnegut, Oliver Stone,
- 5:49Speaker 1: Warren Spahn, Hat Tillman, Rocky Buyer, and there have been
- 5:56Speaker 1: even animals like Stubby the Dog, Sergeant Dubby the Dog,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and Sergeant Reckless to the Horse who have won the
- 6:03Speaker 1: Purple Heart. But there's a little sports for it. Warren's
- 6:05Speaker 1: fawn and Pat Tillman winning the Purple Heart or receiving
- 6:12Speaker 1: it for their uh service to our country. The first
- 6:22Speaker 1: woman to receive a Purple Heart was the Army lieutenant
- 6:25Speaker 1: and Annie G.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Fox became the first woman to receive a Purple Heart.
- 6:29Speaker 1: For her aerobic actions during the Japanese attack on Pearl
- 6:33Speaker 1: Harbor in nineteen forty one. Annie, who was serving as
- 6:37Speaker 1: the chief nurse in a Hickham Field, Hawaii, remained camp
- 6:40Speaker 1: calm throughout the attack on Pearl Harbor and her hospital
- 6:45Speaker 1: and successfully directed hospital's staff to tend to the wounded
- 6:48Speaker 1: as they came in from the harbor.
- 6:59Speaker 2: M Now here's an interesting fact. John F.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Kennedy Junior, the only president with a purple heart. Kennedy,
- 7:07Speaker 1: as we know, served in the US Navy during World
- 7:09Speaker 1: War Two. Injured his back when a Japanese destroyer collided
- 7:14Speaker 1: with his patrolled torpedo, and of course he never was
- 7:18Speaker 1: the same, but in that moment, he did not let
- 7:24Speaker 1: the injury stop him from towing a badly burned crew
- 7:27Speaker 1: member to safety.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Kennedy swam for three miles with the man's life.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Jackets strapped clinch between his teeth, dragging his fellow service
- 7:34Speaker 1: minmber behind him in the water before reaching an island
- 7:39Speaker 1: and bringing the man to safety. He was in the
- 7:45Speaker 1: Navy Reserve. He was U S Navy Reserved Lieutenant John F. Kennedy,
- 7:51Speaker 1: and of course went on to become president. Kennedy was
- 7:54Speaker 1: also a rewarded the Navy and Marine Corps Metal Model
- 7:57Speaker 1: A Medal for his actions.
- 8:04Speaker 2: You can find out more about this.
- 8:11Speaker 1: But how does the USO support people Heart Purple's Art recipients.
- 8:15Speaker 1: The USO is committed to strengthening the well being of
- 8:17Speaker 1: the people serving in the American military and their families.
- 8:21Speaker 1: We all know the USO through Bob Hope and his
- 8:24Speaker 1: efforts during war time to you know, brighten the troops
- 8:28Speaker 1: day by going and performing acts and all that three re.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Seven of their military journey.
- 8:34Speaker 1: We are by their side, including one service members are
- 8:36Speaker 1: killed or injured in action. When wounded service members and
- 8:42Speaker 1: Purple Heart recipients need a place to turn to, they
- 8:45Speaker 1: have USO Warrior and Family Centers and for Beauvoir j Virginia, Landstill, Germany, BETHSA, Maryland,
- 8:54Speaker 1: San Antonio, Texas built to support wounded service members and
- 8:59Speaker 1: their family members will visit them between medical and appointments
- 9:03Speaker 1: at nearby medical centers. So they are doing a great
- 9:08Speaker 1: work for our service men and women. And you know,
- 9:11Speaker 1: I said this every time, and.
- 9:16Speaker 2: I say this every time.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Just because fourth of July is complete now or well
- 9:22Speaker 1: into year two fifty one, you know, as we just
- 9:25Speaker 1: celebrated year two fifty, the two hundred fifty the year.
- 9:28Speaker 2: And then we're heading into year to fifty one. It's
- 9:32Speaker 2: never a time not to honor our troops and especially.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Those who made the ultimate sacrifice and earned the Purple
- 9:41Speaker 1: Heart received it as a recognition of their services to
- 9:46Speaker 1: our great nation. Gee, I want a Calivern National Purple
- 9:49Speaker 1: Heart Day on this podcast before it gets too far
- 9:53Speaker 1: into the weekend, and honor what the USO is doing
- 9:56Speaker 1: for our military.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Families, because.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Not to get political, but in time when the VA
- 10:06Speaker 1: does struggle to keep up with all our military thank god,
- 10:11Speaker 1: those like the USO are by our members side, our
- 10:15Speaker 1: military members side, as they write, no matter where our
- 10:22Speaker 1: service members are in their military journey, their service and
- 10:26Speaker 1: sacrifice deserves to be honored.
- 10:28Speaker 2: And thanks to the support of generous supporters, the.
- 10:32Speaker 1: USO continues in our promise to be by the side
- 10:35Speaker 1: of our military community throughout every step of that military journey.
- 10:40Speaker 2: So all those Purple Heart winners, all.
- 10:42Speaker 1: One point eight million, and to the famous ones and
- 10:46Speaker 1: they're not famous ones, and the hard work and every
- 10:48Speaker 1: day Purple Art recipients and the everyday soldier that may
- 10:52Speaker 1: come back from the battlefield and continue to work through
- 10:54Speaker 1: their struggles and and and those who have.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Died in the line of service to keep our nation great.
- 10:59Speaker 1: To hundred and fifty plus years later, we should always
- 11:03Speaker 1: remember them and honor them.
- 11:06Speaker 2: And I'm thankful the USO just does just that.
- 11:11Speaker 1: And that's my message at One Lago alex Media
