Transcript
- 0:00So I want to start off first with, I'll start off with the New Year's message, Christmas, New Year's.
- 0:05I've had a little bit of time to contemplate and I've also let myself, gives myself some time to rest.
- 0:11And as I was sitting with what I'd like to share, you know, from the perspective of inner work, obviously, because that's my area of expertise.
- 0:18and looking at life as it stands right now in the world in all the different you know perspectives
- 0:25like economy and technology and politics and finance and all of that which I'm not an expert
- 0:33in any one of those fields but you know I know the broader kind of strokes or where things are at
- 0:38right now the condition the state of the world today and with you know technology growing at
- 0:45I think the pace of 200 years in a year if I'm if that's not out of date yet I think that was one
- 0:51of the things I saw you know in this last year in 2024 with AI and robotics and also the state of
- 0:58you know the world economy and global let's say levels of peace which is not very peaceful in
- 1:06some places it's the opposite and also then you know zooming into ourselves and as I say always
- 1:15our outer world is a reflection of our inner world.
- 1:19And I've certainly felt, you know,
- 1:21the acceleration of pace of things this year,
- 1:25but I've had a not a normal year, whatever that is,
- 1:29whatever my normal year was going to be,
- 1:31I didn't have that.
- 1:32I had a different year this year with, you know,
- 1:34with the passing of my mom earlier this year,
- 1:36the beginning of this year.
- 1:37So I think, you know, it comes down to,
- 1:40when I look at it from any and all angles,
- 1:42the word that comes to me, at least for now,
- 1:45I'm going to be bringing it into my newest resolutions and into 2025.
- 1:51I think more than ever now, the word is authentic or authenticity.
- 1:56Or you could say real or be real or get real.
- 2:02So these are just different ways of saying the same thing.
- 2:06And if your fear is, will my job be taken by AI one day soon?
- 2:11The answer is authenticity.
- 2:15the relationship that I want? The answer is, I would say, authenticity. In a world of instant
- 2:22gratification, instant everything, more instant than ever, the one thing that still stands stronger
- 2:29than anything else, I'd say, about the only thing in many kind of arenas is realness, is authenticity.
- 2:38so fear not you can just let you know the crowds go in that direction that they're going and i
- 2:46can't remember very clever person some one of those clever people said go in the opposite
- 2:50direction maybe it was warren buffett or one of those people with a lot of experience
- 2:54right in life and in an area of their life so in case you know you've been worried this year
- 3:00in 2024 and you know things have been happening around you in all sorts of good and maybe also
- 3:08crazy ways I think more than ever you know the focus in my opinion is authenticity you know being
- 3:16real getting real with ourselves to begin with and then you know with our lives so for me as I'm
- 3:24entering into the new year that's I've just started focusing on it today and thinking about
- 3:31and that's what kind of stands out to me you know so in your journey today wherever you are
- 3:38I would say it's a good time to assess right I think a lot of us do this kind of period or
- 3:45of assessment of our year that's gone past and I'll speak for myself I normally look at the
- 3:51year gone and the year that is coming and this time I think what I want to do is look at the
- 3:57year gone and the last decade gone and the decade that is coming and coming as in what I'd like to
- 4:05make happen what I'd like to call forth and make happen and reverse engineering the results of what
- 4:12I'd like to happen 10 years from now and beginning that process today and you know if whatever your
- 4:22dreams and aspirations are that you'd like to call forth and manifest you know if you would you know
- 4:27this i think is a powerful thing about our mind is that we can play things out we can play thoughts
- 4:32out right without having to live it first we can do it in our minds so what if you know what are
- 4:38the areas in your life that you'd like to be different and i'm you know should we all do that
- 4:42every year and the difference between the things that actually manifest as in come true and the
- 4:48things that don't what are the differences what actually worked and didn't work what didn't go to
- 4:54plan right or was just completely left field like some of us got this year i got mine at the beginning
- 5:00of the year and changed my year completely and so therefore what are you prioritizing right what
- 5:07are you going to be putting your time and effort and energy and resources into this year that is
- 5:14going to give you the results not just a year from now you know in well towards the end of next year
- 5:21around this time 27 to the 31st or the first right next year and 10 years from now and if you look at
- 5:30the results that you want you know maybe it's more love more joy more peace more fun more adventure
- 5:35more abundance more purpose more meaning you know whatever it is for you and or anything else that i
- 5:41haven't mentioned and however you'd like that to make manifest in your life right to for you to
- 5:48make manifest in your life challenge your thinking by expanding it to 10 times right that the results
- 5:55or results that you'd like or 100 times and you know if you were to expand that to 100 times the
- 6:02results that you'd like what would have to be different you know how would your thinking have
- 6:07to be different? What actions would you take differently? Rather than if you've been going
- 6:13at a linear pace in the last year or maybe last decade, sometimes it's just playing the same game
- 6:19in a different field, you know, with a different team or different teams, different league,
- 6:24right, so to speak. So for some of you, you know, you're running businesses and it's like, okay,
- 6:30the same thing that you're offering, you know, to a different crowd could afford you to 10,
- 6:37I'm just using that as an example because some other areas in our life may be not so tangible.
- 6:43So what could be and would you like to be different?
- 6:48Or what do you need to make different?
- 6:50So that if you want non-linear as an exponential result,
- 6:55these are some of the things that you might need to change.
- 6:59And knowing that also, the reason I said 10 years is because, as I'm sure you've heard,
- 7:05we underestimate what we can make happen and make achieve in 10 years in a decade and we you know
- 7:11overestimate what we can achieve in 12 months so maybe that's also why every year i find myself
- 7:17kind of not hitting certain kind of goals because they're too big and also i want it now rather than
- 7:23making it big and being willing to stick with it long term right so if i look back on my last one
- 7:30or two decades of my life, there were certain things that I stuck with for, you know, over a
- 7:34decade, like my yoga studio, for example, and it did get to a point, you know, where I dreamt when
- 7:39I began it or couldn't dream of before I began it. So what are some of the things that you would
- 7:45like to make happen? And if you kind of, you know, expanded the time horizon and allowed yourself to
- 7:50slow down and take smaller steps and, you know, in smaller increments in a world that demands more,
- 7:57I say the world demands more time, but actually we let ourselves get distracted. That's kind of what I mean.
- 8:02We distract ourselves, right?
- 8:04If we talk about from a place of taking responsibility for our own lives,
- 8:09we allow ourselves to get distracted.
- 8:12So therefore, our priorities get mixed up. Therefore, our results are mixed up.
- 8:17And if you look at the results that you have today, you could say, you know, you can reverse engineer that.
- 8:22What happened in the year?
- 8:23If you look at your schedule and if you look at your bank account, as in like where we focused our resources, right?
- 8:30Our time, effort, energy, focus.
- 8:33That's the result that we have today.
- 8:35And when I look at this year and where I'm at right now, that's true for me in my life.
- 8:40Where I've put my resources.
- 8:43And as you know, lots of people have said it, right?
- 8:45It's not a question of resources.
- 8:47It's always a question of resourcefulness because we have an infinite amount of resources within us.
- 8:5324 hours you know one person will go and change the world in 24 hours and someone else will barely
- 8:58get out of bed that day right if at all so as you contemplate the beginning the end of this year in
- 9:05the beginning of 2025 you know these are some of the messages i have so i think the message is like
- 9:11you know around authenticity i'm just looking at my notes over here i've actually made notes you
- 9:16You know, dare to be real, I'd say.
- 9:18It's the only way.
- 9:20You know, whether it's you wanting to be effective,
- 9:24like stand out on social media,
- 9:26or, you know, build a business,
- 9:30or get into the relationship, you know,
- 9:32that you've been dreaming of and yearning for,
- 9:35or healing the relationships that you're in,
- 9:39or your body and your health.
- 9:42You know, any area that I look at.
- 9:46any area, it's this.
- 9:50This would be the answer.
- 9:51I'd say get real and be real.
- 9:55So real, authenticity is the word that comes to me.
- 9:58So therefore being willing to have an honest look at things
- 10:03without judging yourself and beating yourself down
- 10:06and actually looking at, okay, this is the state of affairs right now in my life.
- 10:12This is where I'm at.
- 10:13Am I happy with that?
- 10:16what I'd like is this what I'd like to continue and if not then what you know what results do I
- 10:23want and why and how can I reverse engineer that so that I can have you know and start to start
- 10:29that process right so that's the other message it's like what can you start today that you can
- 10:35realize the results in 10 years and when you have that kind of longer term horizon it probably won't
- 10:41take 10 years and if it did it's okay right like you've planned for it anyway what do you need to
- 10:46the other word is focus what do you need to cut down right to sharpen your focus right to to put
- 10:55your focus on then expand because you know in a world of distractions right like a time where
- 11:02there's endless infinite amount of distractions that we can choose to distract ourselves with
- 11:07or when we are not aware we'll capture our attention and maintain it and pull it away
- 11:13in a different direction if we're not aware, which is why awareness is the very first part
- 11:17of this process, this framework.
- 11:20So what do you need to cut out of your life?
- 11:22That is, what are the distractions?
- 11:25And what do you choose to focus on?
- 11:27What do you choose to commit to?
- 11:29As in, commit means you cut out other options and you put your focus and energy into that.
- 11:35And if you put all your focus and energy into one thing, the chance of that thing actually
- 11:40succeeding, however you define success to be, is infinitely higher than if our attention
- 11:47is distracted and diffused across many things.
- 11:53And if you were to relax the expectation on yourself and your life and expand the time
- 12:00horizon and, in a way, I'm saying be kinder to yourself and more generous to yourself
- 12:06and give yourself more time, yet consistently take action, right?
- 12:12Takes the steps.
- 12:13What could that look like?
- 12:15So as in like slow down, slow down and be consistent, you know?
- 12:20And if you don't have time, then start with small increments,
- 12:23but make it as consistent as possible, you know?
- 12:26In other words, build habit, build discipline, right?
- 12:30These are all things that are kind of unsexy, right?
- 12:32In a world of everything being instant,
- 12:36have it now, right, and mask over everything else.
- 12:40By the way, I don't have a problem with tablets, just to say.
- 12:44And, you know, if you need an excuse, use this time of the year, right?
- 12:48Use New Year as an excuse, as a reset.
- 12:51And look at how many New Years you've had and how many times, right, you've made resolutions
- 12:57and why some of them worked and why some of them didn't, or why none of them worked, or
- 13:02why all of them worked, you know, whatever your state of affairs is.
- 13:06and was and is.
- 13:08And the other thing I'd call attention to is
- 13:11in a world of shallow and instant,
- 13:13go deep.
- 13:15Focus and go deep.
- 13:18Specialize.
- 13:20You know, your attention,
- 13:21focus your attention and become the expert.
- 13:24And in that field, that area,
- 13:27that area of your life,
- 13:29that area of your business or career, right?
- 13:34Because, you know,
- 13:36business analogy it's like the more focused you are the the sharper let's say your niche you know
- 13:41all the kind of people that you are serving the same product same service you can charge way more
- 13:47it's the same thing in our lives like rather than just diffuse attention when you focus your
- 13:54attention your energy your efforts you're much more likely to get greater results but be willing
- 14:00to loosen the grip on yourself and give yourself more time.
- 14:05And as much as I say focus, mud sounds like an opposing view as well.
- 14:11It's like another lesson I had this year, if it's useful to you, you can go ahead and
- 14:16use it, is now not later.
- 14:19Last day this time, I assumed that I would have more time with my mother and I didn't.
- 14:23I had exactly a month and then she was gone.
- 14:27And obviously I had no idea.
- 14:30it makes things that we assume, like I assumed I'd have
- 14:34another decade at least with my mum around and
- 14:39that was not what happened.
- 14:42In a time like this, like Christmas and New Year, we
- 14:46have an opportunity to sit with what's actually really important and
- 14:50I have no regrets because my mum was important to me and
- 14:54I did everything I could to have the most amazing relationship with her
- 14:58but what about you? What's important to you in your life? And what have you been delaying that
- 15:07if you delayed more and if you didn't have another day or if they didn't have another day
- 15:13that you would regret, right? And you would have to carry that and probably work on it. And
- 15:21trust me, it's easier to have the conversation than do decades of work on it later.
- 15:28speaking from experience as well obviously and then base your life on truth you know so
- 15:32so often I learned kind of earlier in this year I went through my process of grief and
- 15:39so much was going through in my mind and emotionally and there were periods where I
- 15:45had like very very low periods you know which I've never hit before in my life and I realized that I
- 15:50was basing my life you know around about that time on my emotional landscape and what I learned about
- 15:58is that this moment I feel this now and next moment I can feel something else.
- 16:03So rather than basing my life on my emotions,
- 16:05to actually allow myself to acknowledge and feel the emotions,
- 16:09but to also look at the truth of the situation.
- 16:13And so therefore I'd say seek out the truth
- 16:16and build your life on the foundation of truth in your life
- 16:20rather than just how you feel right now.
