Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Winston's cook straight fairies are being whacked with a high
- 0:02Speaker 1: risk Amber alert from Treasury warning there could be more
- 0:06Speaker 1: cost blowouts delays because of back to front planning and
- 0:09Speaker 1: some of the landside infrastructure they thought they could reuse
- 0:13Speaker 1: can't be reused in fact. Carl Findlay, as Maritime Union Secretory,
- 0:16Speaker 1: joins US Live this morning, Get a.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Carl here, good morning, How are you very well?
- 0:20Speaker 1: Thank you? What sort of infrastructure are we talking about
- 0:23Speaker 1: that's been degraded to the point it can't be used
- 0:25Speaker 1: in the way they thought it could be.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Well, it's nothing new to us. I mean this was
- 0:30Speaker 2: reported back in my opinion Wallace made the silly decision
- 0:36Speaker 2: to scrap the IRIS project and so we're siding back
- 0:39Speaker 2: then the infrastructure issues in the cost blow out there.
- 0:44Speaker 2: So you know, it's a real surprise to me now
- 0:47Speaker 2: that the Treasury are jumping up and down almost three
- 0:51Speaker 2: years later, still citing the same problem, but understanding there
- 0:56Speaker 2: hasn't been anything done the Port of Littleton, sorry not Littleton,
- 1:03Speaker 2: Wellington or Picton in preparation for these ferries that Winston
- 1:09Speaker 2: sorted out to bring down.
- 1:10Speaker 1: In Ferry Holdings Limited have come out and said they've
- 1:13Speaker 1: done extensive due diligence. We will reuse the rail and
- 1:16Speaker 1: road marshaling yards, we will reuse the existing buildings, but
- 1:20Speaker 1: we need new link spans for both ports that you've
- 1:23Speaker 1: talked about. What are link spans? And you know how
- 1:26Speaker 1: important are they?
- 1:28Speaker 2: Well, the very importantnes is key piece of infrastructure for
- 1:31Speaker 2: our rail enabled fairies to get our cargo are running
- 1:34Speaker 2: between the two islands. But the problem I have with
- 1:40Speaker 2: what ferry holdings are. You know they were set up
- 1:43Speaker 2: to sort all this out, so why haven't they pulled
- 1:46Speaker 2: together the Port of Wellington, the Port of Picton, the
- 1:50Speaker 2: Council of Wellington, the Council of Picton and pulled k
- 1:54Speaker 2: Allen and sort of this all out so that they're
- 1:58Speaker 2: all working off the same page. It doesn't seem to
- 1:59Speaker 2: be any communication there. And yet you know again it's
- 2:04Speaker 2: the taxpayer and the workers in particular that they're paying
- 2:07Speaker 2: the price here for you know this this bloody carry
- 2:12Speaker 2: on that we're all sick of.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Hey, In terms of the deadline, so twenty twenty nine
- 2:18Speaker 1: is the deadline and Treasury's gone to them and said
- 2:20Speaker 1: you need to come up with a back up a
- 2:22Speaker 1: plan B. What what could that look like, how could
- 2:25Speaker 1: we keep sailing if we don't have the landside done?
- 2:28Speaker 1: The old ferries are out of action.
- 2:29Speaker 2: What do we do well exactly, there's someone sitting in
- 2:34Speaker 2: the background looking at the Gracie Brothers with a project
- 2:41Speaker 2: that they're looking at and Campbell Bay I believe it's
- 2:43Speaker 2: called and they're they're sitting out there and they're they're
- 2:49Speaker 2: they're waiting there to go so and that's on the
- 2:52Speaker 2: South Island side. So yeah, other than that, I'm not
- 2:58Speaker 2: sure what else we can do it just once what
- 3:03Speaker 2: sim needs to get them hear it and bang all
- 3:05Speaker 2: the group said together again and make them get a
- 3:07Speaker 2: deal done.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Appreciate your transforming Calvin LA Maritime Union secretary.
