Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Last we've heard, the Northern Territory government is working with
- 0:03Speaker 1: Optis to assist customers whose personal data may have been compromised. Now,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Optis has advised that the number of Northern Territory customers
- 0:11Speaker 1: whose driver's license data has been stolen is around twenty thousand. Now,
- 0:16Speaker 1: all people that have been impacted will be contacted by Optus.
- 0:20Speaker 1: But joining us on the line to let us know
- 0:22Speaker 1: a little bit more about how things are going to
- 0:24Speaker 1: work from the Northern Territory perspective is dipple's manager of
- 0:28Speaker 1: Policy and Licensing, Stephen Macro. Good morning to you, Stephen.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Good morning Katie.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Stephen, talk us through what is going to happen now
- 0:37Speaker 1: for those Territorians whose data may have been stolen and
- 0:42Speaker 1: might need to change their licenses.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Affected customers Optics customers who've had their guide license details
- 0:51Speaker 2: stolen through this data breach can come into an MBA
- 0:55Speaker 2: office or contact contact center to request the replacement license
- 0:59Speaker 2: free of charge. All they need to do is present
- 1:01Speaker 2: the correspondence from Optus as evidence of their data breach.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Yeah right, So I suppose for a lot of people
- 1:08Speaker 1: they're just going to be waiting to hear if Optus
- 1:10Speaker 1: gets in contact with them and then they can come in,
- 1:14Speaker 1: have a chat with you guys, and try to change
- 1:17Speaker 1: or try to get that new license pretty quickly.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yes, we'll replace the license on the spot. Bear in
- 1:25Speaker 2: mind that our licenses are now mailed out, so the
- 1:27Speaker 2: person won't receive their new license card until they get
- 1:30Speaker 2: it in the mail.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Okay, So if they come in, have a chat with
- 1:33Speaker 1: you guys, and then it gets sort of the work
- 1:36Speaker 1: gets done, but then it will be mailed out, that
- 1:39Speaker 1: is correct, And Steven, any idea sort of how many like,
- 1:42Speaker 1: how many days that usually takes. I'm assuming not very
- 1:45Speaker 1: long if it's just mailing within the territory.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Mail delivery times very across the location. So it all
- 1:53Speaker 2: depends on the mail delivery in your location. But we'd
- 1:56Speaker 2: expected most licenses to be received within two weeks.
- 2:00Speaker 1: You don't have sort of the numbers. But have there
- 2:02Speaker 1: been a few people who've already come in.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Yeah. Since the data breach, we've had a steady stream
- 2:08Speaker 2: of customers coming in each day requesting a replacement license,
- 2:10Speaker 2: so expressing their concerns about the compromised.
- 2:13Speaker 1: License, and people like generally are people sort of pretty
- 2:17Speaker 1: reasonable about it? I would imagine that some people are
- 2:20Speaker 1: feeling quite sort of upset and done easy with their
- 2:25Speaker 1: data being shared.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Understandably, most people are quite anxious about the situation. I'm
- 2:32Speaker 2: very concerned that their license details is being used inappropriately,
- 2:37Speaker 2: and I know.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Some people have been questioning as well, Stephen. You know,
- 2:40Speaker 1: is it just sort of the license number that needs
- 2:43Speaker 1: to then change or is there more that needs to
- 2:46Speaker 1: change When it comes to our identification, there's.
- 2:51Speaker 2: A unique card number that's displayed on every license card
- 2:54Speaker 2: issued in the Northern Territory and that's the key element
- 2:57Speaker 2: for confirming the credential as an identity document. So it's
- 3:00Speaker 2: not just the license number. There's a unique card number
- 3:03Speaker 2: that is critical and every time we replace a license
- 3:07Speaker 2: that unique card number will change, and that's what we're offering.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Stephen tell Us. I think one of the things that
- 3:13Speaker 1: a lot of people will be wondering is whether they've
- 3:14Speaker 1: got to pay for it. The Chief Minister had said
- 3:16Speaker 1: on the show yesterday that no, that you wouldn't have
- 3:19Speaker 1: to pay to replace it. But that's the case, isn't it.
- 3:23Speaker 2: That is the case. As I said earlier, we are
- 3:25Speaker 2: offering a free card replacement, So just present your current
- 3:29Speaker 2: license card to an MVR with eavenence that you're an
- 3:32Speaker 2: Optics customer and will replace your license card for you.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And have there been any long lines or delays to
- 3:38Speaker 1: get those new licenses at the MVR officers.
- 3:43Speaker 2: No longer than normal and no change. There's just been
- 3:45Speaker 2: a slight increase in the number of inquiries we're receiving
- 3:48Speaker 2: about a replacement card.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Okay, so a slight increase in the number of people
- 3:52Speaker 1: getting in contact. But all pretty well business as usual
- 3:55Speaker 1: there for you guys by the sounds of as pretty
- 3:58Speaker 1: much Yeah, well, Stephen, we appreciate your time this morning
- 4:02Speaker 1: at short notice. Thank you very much for having a
- 4:04Speaker 1: quick chat with us.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Thanks Copie, thank you.
