- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Outspoken. It's your dose of the
- 0:06Speaker 1: hottest influencer.
- 0:07Speaker 2: And pop culture news twice a week.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I'm Kate Torber and coming up on today's show, Isabel
- 0:13Speaker 1: Clark's warning about fake influencers and Martha Kalopatidis' $ 1, 000 blow wave.
- 0:18Speaker 1: But first, a video of Indy Clinton in the middle
- 0:21Speaker 1: of what appears to be a job interview is going viral. Now,
- 0:25Speaker 1: the vision was supposedly captured by an office worker who
- 0:27Speaker 1: was shocked to see the TikToker at their corporate office.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Many are skeptical, though, that this could just be another
- 0:33Speaker 1: PR stunt. Yeah, Indy has been teasing for a couple
- 0:36Speaker 1: of weeks now that she has an exciting new venture
- 0:38Speaker 1: in the works. So two weeks ago, she announced on
- 0:41Speaker 1: her TikTok that something life-changing has happened to her and
- 0:44Speaker 1: went on to say that her husband, Ben, has been
- 0:46Speaker 1: helping her a lot with the.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Kids so she can go and be a boss.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Now, on Thursday, she teased her followers further, sharing a
- 0:53Speaker 1: mirror selfie taken from an office bathroom. And in the photo,
- 0:56Speaker 1: she was wearing really corporate clothes. I've never seen her
- 0:59Speaker 1: in anything like this before on a TikTok. She's always
- 1:01Speaker 1: wearing baggy tracksuit pants and oversized tops. She was wearing
- 1:05Speaker 1: a matching suit from Kukai and she had a clipboard
- 1:08Speaker 1: under her arm. It was almost like she was cosplaying
- 1:11Speaker 1: being an office worker. And in the caption, she wrote
- 1:13Speaker 1: exciting new era. It's interesting you commented on what she
- 1:16Speaker 1: normally wears because it seems to be quite a strategic
- 1:19Speaker 1: decision for her. She said that when she looks hot
- 1:21Speaker 1: on TikTok, it's not good for her and it's better
- 1:23Speaker 1: for to actually dress down so people don't get jealous? Yeah,
- 1:26Speaker 1: she said that usually when we see her in the
- 1:28Speaker 1: baggy clothes, she actually has her gym gear on underneath,
- 1:31Speaker 1: which is usually a crop top and some leggings, which
- 1:34Speaker 1: she usually gets around the house in. But as you said,
- 1:36Speaker 1: she has to hide maybe her body so that people
- 1:39Speaker 1: don't get jealous.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Not long after that mirror.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Selfie, a video of Indy supposedly at an interview for
- 1:46Speaker 1: an office job started going viral on TikTok. And the
- 1:49Speaker 1: video showed Indy being interviewed by an older man, And
- 1:52Speaker 1: it was supposedly shot by an office worker who was
- 1:55Speaker 1: in the cubicle behind her. And over the video, the
- 1:58Speaker 1: office worker wrote, what the actual fuck, Indy Clinton in
- 2:01Speaker 1: my office. If you listen really carefully to the video,
- 2:04Speaker 1: you can hear Indy say, and.
- 2:05Speaker 2: What time do I have to start?
- 2:07Speaker 1: And she then asked, is it okay if I'm late occasionally?
- 2:10Speaker 1: Now this video has quickly attracted over 150,000 views and
- 2:14Speaker 1: it was uploaded by an anonymous account. which has never
- 2:18Speaker 1: shared a video before, which is a little bit fishy.
- 2:20Speaker 2: That is a massive red flag.
- 2:23Speaker 1: It also doesn't make sense because I've worked in many
- 2:25Speaker 1: offices before and there is no way that they would
- 2:28Speaker 1: conduct an interview in the open workspace for everyone to
- 2:31Speaker 1: listen to, especially if that person had a public profile.
- 2:35Speaker 1: When I worked in a newsroom, it was very top
- 2:37Speaker 1: secret who they were hiring. And again, it would be
- 2:40Speaker 1: people who had somewhat of a profile. So these interviews
- 2:43Speaker 1: would be taken place in private or... at the very least,
- 2:46Speaker 1: in a closed off office away from people. It really
- 2:50Speaker 1: doesn't make a lot of sense. And also the fact
- 2:52Speaker 1: that it was a staff member who apparently secretly recorded
- 2:55Speaker 1: it and then uploaded it. There would be no way
- 2:57Speaker 1: this would happen because this person could get fired. I mean,
- 3:00Speaker 1: particularly when they're in the cubicle behind the desk that
- 3:02Speaker 1: it was happening. It would be easy to work out
- 3:04Speaker 1: who that person was.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Well, the thing is people believed it.
- 3:07Speaker 1: So immediately people started slamming the office worker for invading
- 3:11Speaker 1: Indy's privacy. One user wrote under the video, this is
- 3:14Speaker 1: such an invasion of privacy and something you will easily
- 3:17Speaker 1: lose your job over. Whilst another said, Jesus, you could
- 3:20Speaker 1: get fired for this. And it was quite interesting because
- 3:23Speaker 1: a lot of Indies followers started tagging her in the
- 3:26Speaker 1: post to alert her that her privacy.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Had been invaded.
- 3:29Speaker 1: And this is where influencer watchdog account Dutch Minty got
- 3:32Speaker 1: into the conversation because She has recently made a comeback.
- 3:35Speaker 1: So she ended up sharing the TikTok in question and wrote,
- 3:39Speaker 1: going to be a tough day tomorrow for the employee
- 3:41Speaker 1: who filmed this.
- 3:41Speaker 2: So she bought into it as well. I don't know
- 3:44Speaker 2: how I feel about Dutch Minty being back.
- 3:45Speaker 1: When she returned, she spoke about how She didn't really
- 3:48Speaker 1: like the tone of her page a couple of years ago,
- 3:51Speaker 1: and that's why she went on this hiatus. And she'd
- 3:53Speaker 1: learned a lot since then, and she wasn't going to
- 3:55Speaker 1: just be honing in on influencers and being judgmental. But
- 3:58Speaker 1: ever since she's been back, it seems like that's what
- 4:00Speaker 1: she's been doing. I think she seems to have gone
- 4:02Speaker 1: harder on a couple of influencers, if anything. Getting back
- 4:05Speaker 1: to this story, there was, of course, Kate, a lot
- 4:07Speaker 1: of skepticism over the legitimacy of this video and whether
- 4:10Speaker 1: this is an orchestrated PR stunt by a brand maybe
- 4:14Speaker 1: that she's working with. One follower wrote underneath the video,
- 4:17Speaker 1: this is a teaser for something.
- 4:18Speaker 2: It's not real. Whilst another said, so staged and fake.
- 4:22Speaker 2: She'll announce some collab or brand deal tomorrow.
- 4:25Speaker 1: And it did sound very fake, the conversation that she
- 4:27Speaker 1: had with this older guy.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Like who is asking- Can I come in late or
- 4:32Speaker 2: what happens to me if I'm late?
- 4:33Speaker 1: Yeah, she's obviously playing into that trope that influencers don't
- 4:36Speaker 1: work really hard and they would really struggle having a
- 4:38Speaker 1: nine to five. When she really took off a couple
- 4:41Speaker 1: of years ago and there were some mainstream publications who
- 4:44Speaker 1: were doing profiles on her, there was a lot of
- 4:46Speaker 1: rhetoric that she'd never had a nine to five job
- 4:49Speaker 1: and she'd never really had a real job before.
- 4:51Speaker 2: So I wonder if they're trying to play into that.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And this isn't the first time that Indie has been
- 4:55Speaker 1: accused of being involved in a publicity stunt for a brand.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Last year, skincare brand TBH attracted a lot of attention
- 5:02Speaker 1: when Indie appeared to accidentally leak one of their unreleased
- 5:05Speaker 1: products in a daily vlog. Oh my God, as if
- 5:08Speaker 1: this is a year ago, I remember seeing this and
- 5:10Speaker 1: being totally tricked by it.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I was like, oh my God, can you imagine?
- 5:15Speaker 1: They must be freaking out at the TBH office because
- 5:17Speaker 1: their founder put out a video where the social media
- 5:21Speaker 1: girls share with her what had happened and she was
- 5:23Speaker 1: freaking out and they had to push this launch forward
- 5:26Speaker 1: for this product, which.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Ended up selling out.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Yeah, it actually ended up being one of their most
- 5:30Speaker 1: popular product launches and people started to get suspicious because
- 5:33Speaker 1: of the way that the TBH marketing team rolled out
- 5:36Speaker 1: all of these TikToks straight afterwards.
- 5:39Speaker 2: And they were such viral videos because they had.
- 5:41Speaker 1: All these emergency meetings and everyone was like, this just
- 5:45Speaker 1: seems a bit off. Yeah, and they're very well known
- 5:47Speaker 1: for the guerrilla marketing tactics. Around the time of the
- 5:50Speaker 1: Barbie movie release, they actually got their boss, who looks
- 5:53Speaker 1: a little bit like Margot Robbie, to walk around the
- 5:55Speaker 1: city with security guards.
- 5:57Speaker 2: And a lot of people.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Got tricked thinking it was Margot Robbie. They also had
- 6:01Speaker 1: a Taylor Swift lookalike come into their office around the
- 6:03Speaker 1: era's tour. Yeah, they're very clever with their marketing. They
- 6:06Speaker 1: seem to push the boundary a lot. It's clear that
- 6:08Speaker 1: they've got a young team behind them who knows the
- 6:10Speaker 1: types of videos that are going to go viral on
- 6:12Speaker 1: social media. And many people think that Indy's supposed move
- 6:16Speaker 1: into the corporate world is another PR stunt by TBH.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And Influencer Updates AU pointed out that the office Indy
- 6:24Speaker 1: appeared to have her job interview in looks very similar
- 6:27Speaker 1: to the TBH office. So she shared these photos side
- 6:30Speaker 1: by side.
- 6:30Speaker 2: They were near identical.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it did look very similar. Now, a day after
- 6:35Speaker 1: the job interview went viral on TikTok, Indy and her
- 6:37Speaker 1: husband appeared in a daily vlog together and said this.
- 6:41Speaker 3: I've taken Auslan really exciting a few days a week,
- 6:45Speaker 3: which is fun for me.
- 6:46Speaker 4: People like running into each other in the city, like
- 6:50Speaker 4: at lunch spots and stuff.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Indie then posted a number of Instagram stories showing off
- 6:55Speaker 1: her new work shoes. She wrote, got myself the cutest
- 6:58Speaker 1: new work shoes for winter. Now the shoes in question
- 7:01Speaker 1: were from Tony Bianco, but she didn't tag them. And
- 7:04Speaker 1: this led a lot of people to speculate whether this
- 7:06Speaker 1: whole exercise was just.
- 7:07Speaker 2: An ad for a shoe brand. It's still unclear exactly
- 7:10Speaker 2: what is going on.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like we might find out later this week.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Something is brewing.
- 7:14Speaker 1: It has been a tough couple of weeks for Indie though,
- 7:16Speaker 1: because She has only really just returned to TikTok following
- 7:20Speaker 1: a lot of horrendous trolling that's been going on about
- 7:22Speaker 1: her recent nose job.
- 7:24Speaker 2: It is so.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Awful what has been going on to Indie Clinton. And
- 7:27Speaker 1: I'm glad we're talking about it today because whenever her
- 7:30Speaker 1: videos pop up on my feed, I have a scroll
- 7:32Speaker 1: through the comments and I'm absolutely disgusted with humanity. The
- 7:35Speaker 1: things that they're saying to her are so awful. And
- 7:39Speaker 1: she's been pretty open about this surgery as well. She's
- 7:42Speaker 1: explained that she's getting it done because there's a bump
- 7:44Speaker 1: on her nose that was caused by a surfing accident.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yeah. And I was.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Interested that she's got more backlash over this considering the
- 7:51Speaker 1: last time she had surgery, she kept it a secret.
- 7:53Speaker 1: And I thought maybe the fact that she was so
- 7:56Speaker 1: upfront about what was going on, that people would react differently.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing.
- 8:01Speaker 1: When she made her first return to TikTok since the
- 8:04Speaker 1: nose job, She prefaced that her nose was still very
- 8:07Speaker 1: swollen and it would take several months to settle and
- 8:10Speaker 1: that she's not.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Fully recovered yet.
- 8:11Speaker 1: She kept saying that in all of her videos, yet
- 8:14Speaker 1: this hasn't stopped people from being so cruel.
- 8:17Speaker 2: And judgmental online.
- 8:18Speaker 1: There are these absolute assholes who are comparing her new
- 8:21Speaker 1: nose to Michael Jackson and they're saying that she's ruined
- 8:24Speaker 1: her face.
- 8:25Speaker 2: And we've got to remember that this.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Is surgery that just took place a couple of weeks ago.
- 8:30Speaker 1: It hasn't settled in yet. She's been very clear about
- 8:32Speaker 1: all of that. And due to this onslaught of abuse,
- 8:35Speaker 1: Indy has started to wear a face mask to hide
- 8:38Speaker 1: her nose in her videos.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Here's what she said.
- 8:40Speaker 3: I'm going to be wearing a mask for the foreseeable.
- 8:44Speaker 2: What's wrong with Sol?
- 8:45Speaker 5: Bambi?
- 8:47Speaker 3: For the foreseeable future, because unfortunately, the dense people of
- 8:52Speaker 3: this world, not all of you, but some of you
- 8:54Speaker 3: are unable to understand that after you have your bones
- 8:58Speaker 3: shaved down, right? They cut a slit and lifted my
- 9:01Speaker 3: skin and shaved down the bones. and then realign some cartilage.
- 9:05Speaker 3: They expect her nose to look perfect. Two weeks post-surgery.
- 9:09Speaker 3: It's been two weeks, dude.
- 9:11Speaker 1: It actually reminds me of the reaction Sky Wheatley got
- 9:13Speaker 1: when she unveiled her fox eye surgery, but I feel
- 9:16Speaker 1: like the circumstances were quite different. Not that it makes
- 9:19Speaker 1: it right, but I feel like people were more intrigued
- 9:22Speaker 1: by that surgery and the process involved because it's a
- 9:25Speaker 1: relatively new procedure. I mean, we hear about influencers and
- 9:30Speaker 1: just everyday people having nose jobs all the time. And
- 9:32Speaker 1: also because Indie Clinton said she was getting it done
- 9:34Speaker 1: to fix an injury, whereas a lot of people worried
- 9:36Speaker 1: about Sky Wheatley's mental health because a lot of people
- 9:39Speaker 1: thought she did not need to get her eyes lifted
- 9:41Speaker 1: at 30 years old.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 1: There's also been this really gross video that's been floating
- 9:46Speaker 1: around on TikTok, which is essentially a before and after
- 9:49Speaker 1: comparison of Indie. And in the before photo, Indie's literally
- 9:53Speaker 1: pregnant and has blonde hair. So The structure of her
- 9:55Speaker 1: face is completely different. She's got fluid and extra weight.
- 9:59Speaker 1: And I just think it's unfair to compare a photo
- 10:02Speaker 1: of someone when they're pregnant to a photo when they're
- 10:04Speaker 1: two years postpartum because people are saying what else has
- 10:07Speaker 1: she got done because her cheeks look completely different her
- 10:10Speaker 1: jawline's different everything's different about her that's.
- 10:12Speaker 2: What happens when women go through pregnancy. Their face is
- 10:16Speaker 2: completely different.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I feel like my face and the structure is completely
- 10:19Speaker 1: different at the moment.
- 10:19Speaker 2: To what it's usually like.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I got a complete jump scare the other night when
- 10:23Speaker 1: you sent a video through of me eating sombreros after
- 10:26Speaker 1: I'd just given birth.
- 10:27Speaker 2: It was shocking.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I was like, I look like a completely different person.
- 10:30Speaker 1: I had so much fluid in my face. I would
- 10:32Speaker 1: hate for someone to take that picture and now compare
- 10:35Speaker 1: it to me and be like, oh, she's.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Had a lot of filler in her face.
- 10:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Well, women are starting to hit back on TikTok and
- 10:40Speaker 1: they're creating videos calling out Indies trolls.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Here's a snippet of what some people have been saying.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Okay guys, I'm getting really, really mad.
- 10:48Speaker 5: You guys need to leave Indy Clinton the frick alone.
- 10:50Speaker 1: What does it affect you that she got a nose job?
- 10:52Speaker 6: It doesn't.
- 10:53Speaker 1: So why the heck are you guys commenting the most
- 10:55Speaker 1: horrible things.
- 10:56Speaker 5: On her videos?
- 10:57Speaker 6: The fact that even big Eddies have to step in
- 10:59Speaker 6: and make a video. Like she's clearly not having a
- 11:02Speaker 6: good time on the internet lately.
- 11:04Speaker 5: Can we just talk about Indy Clinton for a moment?
- 11:07Speaker 4: Why do girls have to be so bitchy? Like, why
- 11:11Speaker 4: can't we just support one another? My goodness, we're comparing
- 11:15Speaker 4: photos of someone, a woman who was pregnant, who she said,
- 11:19Speaker 4: I was 25 kilos heavier because I was pregnant.
- 11:23Speaker 2: And we all, we all get puffy faces when we're pregnant.
- 11:27Speaker 3: We've been comparing.
- 11:28Speaker 4: That photo with a photo of her now, not pregnant,
- 11:32Speaker 4: 25 kilos lighter.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I think it's really nice to see people actually calling
- 11:36Speaker 1: out this trolling behavior and saying that this is not acceptable.
- 11:39Speaker 1: I've absolutely been loving her husband Ben's videos as well.
- 11:42Speaker 1: He has been sticking up for Indy. He's been telling
- 11:45Speaker 1: the trolls off and it is just so nice to
- 11:48Speaker 1: see that he is in her corner.
- 11:50Speaker 5: This is what a $ 1, 000 blow wave looks like in
- 11:52Speaker 5: New York City.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Martha Califatidis has shocked her followers by revealing she got
- 11:56Speaker 1: a $ 1, 000.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Blow wave in New York City.
- 11:59Speaker 1: The former reality star was slammed for being unrelatable and
- 12:02Speaker 1: flaunting her wealth in a cost of living crisis. But
- 12:05Speaker 1: she says it's the best blow wave she's ever had. Now, Soph,
- 12:09Speaker 1: there was a lot of pressure on Martha to look
- 12:10Speaker 1: good that night.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like the.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Pressure was definitely on that night because Martha was appearing
- 12:15Speaker 1: at an influencer event, which was hosted by Emrata and
- 12:18Speaker 1: Sydney Sweeney.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Oh, got it. Say no more.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Because the two of them, they're basically the face of
- 12:23Speaker 1: this new Kerastars pop-up event and campaign where they're promoting
- 12:26Speaker 1: this new hair gloss. And Martha was invited along with
- 12:30Speaker 1: a number of other Aussie beauty influencers, including Katia Milan and.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Also Jackie Alexander.
- 12:34Speaker 1: So they had been flown to New York as part
- 12:37Speaker 1: of this all expenses paid influencer trip to promote this
- 12:40Speaker 1: new range.
- 12:40Speaker 2: What an incredible gig to get.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Oh, wow.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I mean, I suppose a lot of them have now
- 12:44Speaker 1: moved on to Coachella from New York. Ahead of the event,
- 12:47Speaker 1: Martha shared a number of Get Ready With Me videos,
- 12:50Speaker 1: including how she achieved her blow wave. She captioned the video,
- 12:53Speaker 1: can confirm this is the most expensive blow dry I've
- 12:55Speaker 1: ever had.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Worth every penny. Thank you, Jackie.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Now in this video, Martha showed Jackie, who is the
- 13:01Speaker 1: New York hairstylist, arriving at her hotel room to work
- 13:04Speaker 1: her magic. And she ended up giving Martha a haircut.
- 13:07Speaker 1: She added some extra layers for bounce. And she also
- 13:10Speaker 1: proceeded to pin Martha's hair in rollers and also added
- 13:13Speaker 1: some extra curls.
- 13:14Speaker 2: So she did get the works. Let's listen to Martha's
- 13:18Speaker 2: reaction to the final results. Oh my.
- 13:25Speaker 3: What?
- 13:26Speaker 6: Body-ody.
- 13:28Speaker 2: That is literally the brief though, like that you gave.
- 13:30Speaker 4: The best glow wave I've ever had though.
- 13:36Speaker 1: She definitely did pump up the hairdresser's ties in that video,
- 13:39Speaker 1: but I have to say it did look very nice,
- 13:41Speaker 1: but it would want to for the price tag of $ 1, 000.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I couldn't help but think how much Martha was looking
- 13:47Speaker 1: like Kim Kardashian in this video. So en masse she
- 13:49Speaker 1: was dubbed the Kmart Kim and she's looking more and
- 13:53Speaker 1: more like her. I think it's how she's doing her
- 13:55Speaker 1: makeup now. She seems to be doing a lot more contouring,
- 13:58Speaker 1: also probably because she did have a $ 1, 000 blow wave.
- 14:00Speaker 2: That probably helped a little bit. Yeah, that's probably the
- 14:02Speaker 2: norm for Kimmy K.
- 14:03Speaker 1: It turns out that Jackie Alexander also got a blow
- 14:06Speaker 1: wave done by the same stylist. The only issue was
- 14:09Speaker 1: her appointment was at 8am. So she was kind of
- 14:11Speaker 1: like that first bridesmaid in a wedding party that gets
- 14:14Speaker 1: absolutely screwed. Well, I really felt for Jackie because she
- 14:16Speaker 1: had been out drinking the night before because it was
- 14:19Speaker 1: her birthday. So she ended up having a nap after
- 14:21Speaker 1: she got the blow wave done and essentially ruining it.
- 14:24Speaker 1: It actually ended up making some pretty good content though.
- 14:26Speaker 1: And it was pretty convenient because then she could talk
- 14:28Speaker 1: about how the Kerastase formula helped her get a blow
- 14:31Speaker 1: wave back.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Martha did give a shit over it, though. Our hair
- 14:35Speaker 2: is really giving. I fear mine's giving the most. Yeah, well, yeah,
- 14:40Speaker 2: I slept on mine, so.
- 14:41Speaker 5: Our cute little friend Jackie, we got a $ 1, 000 blow
- 14:45Speaker 5: wave today. Our blow waves from our New York hair
- 14:49Speaker 5: stylist cost $ 1, 000. And each, each, and she got hers
- 14:56Speaker 5: and then fucking slept on it, so.
- 14:58Speaker 2: And look, it still looks amazing.
- 14:59Speaker 6: No, it doesn't.
- 15:00Speaker 2: No, it doesn't.
- 15:02Speaker 6: No, it does.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Now, Martha's TikTok blew up with the video attracting over
- 15:06Speaker 1: 250,000 views. The general tone in the comment section was outrage.
- 15:12Speaker 1: One follower wrote, it's obscene paying $ 1, 000 for a blow
- 15:14Speaker 1: wave and even more obscene that you're okay advertising it
- 15:17Speaker 1: in the current economic climate. While another wrote, how absurd, 1K.
- 15:22Speaker 1: In the current climate, how do you think this is relatable?
- 15:24Speaker 2: Martha replied, it's not.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Hairdressers even started weighing in with one writing, as gorgeous
- 15:29Speaker 1: as it looks, as a hairdresser of 34 years, I
- 15:32Speaker 1: get it was a call out to your hotel room,
- 15:34Speaker 1: but you just got ripped off hard. Whilst another said,
- 15:37Speaker 1: as a hairdresser, how do I get people to start
- 15:39Speaker 1: paying me $ 1, 000 to do their hair? Now, there was
- 15:42Speaker 1: one fan who was very polite and could see why
- 15:44Speaker 1: the investment was worth it, writing, if you're on a
- 15:46Speaker 1: red carpet and going to be photographed from every angle,
- 15:49Speaker 1: you're going to pay for it. Now, of course, social
- 15:52Speaker 1: media is not what it seems. And this ended up
- 15:54Speaker 1: being a major case of rage baiting. Martha Kalafatidis and
- 15:57Speaker 1: Jackie Alexander did not pay for their $ 1, 000 blow waves.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Are you surprised, Sophie? No, I'm not.
- 16:03Speaker 1: And when I dug deeper into the other influencers who
- 16:06Speaker 1: were on this trip's content, it was quite clear that
- 16:09Speaker 1: Kerastase had organized hairdressers to visit each of the influencers
- 16:13Speaker 1: in their hotel rooms to get them ready for the event.
- 16:16Speaker 1: And Martha even tagged Kerastase in her original post. It
- 16:19Speaker 1: surprises me that they would want their influencers on the
- 16:22Speaker 1: trip promoting that they got.
- 16:23Speaker 2: A $ 1, 000.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Blow wave because to me it's like, hang on, do
- 16:26Speaker 1: I need a $ 1, 000 blow wave.
- 16:28Speaker 2: In order for my hair to look good using this product?
- 16:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I wonder if they weren't really happy with the
- 16:32Speaker 1: way that Martha promoted it because I get in order
- 16:36Speaker 1: to sell this hair gloss, Kerastase wants all of the influencers'
- 16:40Speaker 1: hair to look as great as possible when they're at
- 16:42Speaker 1: this event. So it makes sense for them to send
- 16:44Speaker 1: top stylists to their rooms to ensure that they're seen
- 16:47Speaker 1: in the best light. But as you say, Kate, when
- 16:49Speaker 1: you're then pointing out that this hairstylist usually charges $ 1, 000
- 16:52Speaker 1: just to do a simple blow wave, it's like, fuck,
- 16:55Speaker 1: this product mustn't be very good. Yeah, I would have
- 16:57Speaker 1: thought it would be better if the influencers were shown
- 16:59Speaker 1: doing their hair in videos before the event. Yeah, doing
- 17:02Speaker 1: it themselves because then it actually shows, well, at home,
- 17:05Speaker 1: this is how you use it.
- 17:06Speaker 2: This is how I can achieve the look.
- 17:08Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I get the vibe that maybe this was a concept
- 17:10Speaker 1: that wasn't necessarily approved or suggested by Kerastase. It's something
- 17:14Speaker 1: that Martha ran with. Maybe she asked the stylist who
- 17:17Speaker 1: was in her hotel room, hey, how much do you
- 17:19Speaker 1: usually charge for something like this? Or what's the most
- 17:22Speaker 1: expensive blow way you've ever done? So she knows what
- 17:25Speaker 1: makes good content. She knew that this was going to
- 17:27Speaker 1: rage bait a lot of people. As you said, Katie
- 17:29Speaker 1: got 250,000 views. It's done very well for her. And
- 17:32Speaker 1: she's probably essentially saying to Kerastase, look, you should take
- 17:34Speaker 1: me on more brand trips like this to New York
- 17:36Speaker 1: because look how many views I got for you. Well,
- 17:38Speaker 1: ultimately it's good brand exposure for Kerastase. I mean, we're
- 17:41Speaker 1: talking about it. People are talking about it.
- 17:43Speaker 2: I'm intrigued.
- 17:44Speaker 1: What's the most expensive haircut or hairstyle you've ever got done? Well,
- 17:48Speaker 1: I've never really paid a lot for any sort of hairstyling.
- 17:51Speaker 1: We have had the same hairdresser since we were four.
- 17:54Speaker 1: She's now become a family friend. She did our hair
- 17:57Speaker 1: at our wedding and she was so kind. She gave
- 17:59Speaker 1: it to us as a gift. So My wedding hair
- 18:01Speaker 1: probably would have been the most expensive, but I don't
- 18:03Speaker 1: know how much she would have normally charged. The only
- 18:05Speaker 1: time that I've really had an insight into how crazy
- 18:08Speaker 1: some hairdressing prices are was when I worked at Today
- 18:11Speaker 1: Tonight and we did this investigation. So we went undercover
- 18:15Speaker 1: and basically we went to one of the most expensive
- 18:17Speaker 1: hairdressers on King William Road, which is quite a fancy
- 18:21Speaker 1: street in Adelaide. And we tried to get them to
- 18:24Speaker 1: upsell everything possible.
- 18:25Speaker 2: For us, I mean, this was about eight or nine
- 18:28Speaker 2: years ago.
- 18:28Speaker 1: I think the haircut ended up being like $ 600.
- 18:32Speaker 2: We then took a model to a really affordable.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Hairdresser to show that you could achieve the same results
- 18:39Speaker 1: at just a place that was maybe not in such
- 18:41Speaker 1: a fancy area. And then we took them to the
- 18:43Speaker 1: streets and people had to pick which was the more
- 18:45Speaker 1: expensive haircut.
- 18:47Speaker 2: What ended up winning out? The person who had the cheaper.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Haircut actually won, which was quite embarrassing for the high-end salon.
- 18:55Speaker 2: I can never, ever go there again.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I've always, some of our friends go to this salon
- 18:59Speaker 1: and I always think, oh, like when my hairdresser retires.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Where will I go?
- 19:03Speaker 1: I'm like, I can never go to anywhere on King
- 19:05Speaker 1: William Road now. I mean, surely eight or nine years
- 19:08Speaker 1: have passed. They probably won't remember.
- 19:09Speaker 6: I think a lot of people forget that the influencer
- 19:12Speaker 6: world is quite literally a world.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Do you know what I mean?
- 19:16Speaker 6: Like it's completely different from real life.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Isabel Clark has broken her silence after being dragged into
- 19:23Speaker 1: the Anna Paul drama. The beauty influencer warned her followers
- 19:26Speaker 1: that most influencers aren't as they appear online. Now, Kate,
- 19:30Speaker 1: before we get into it, for those not familiar with her,
- 19:33Speaker 1: who is Isabel Clark? Well, she's a 26-year-old Australian influencer
- 19:37Speaker 1: who started out sharing makeup YouTube tutorials as a teenager.
- 19:41Speaker 1: And despite getting accepted into a law degree after achieving
- 19:44Speaker 1: an almost perfect ATAR, she put her studies on hold
- 19:47Speaker 1: to pursue influencing full-time. Wow, I had no idea that
- 19:50Speaker 1: she got an almost perfect ATAR. Yeah, she's a very
- 19:53Speaker 1: intelligent woman. Now, she has over 660,000 followers on Instagram
- 19:59Speaker 1: and over 370 on TikTok. And what has really set
- 20:01Speaker 1: her apart from other influencers is her transparency around her
- 20:05Speaker 1: health issues. So She has been really open about sharing
- 20:08Speaker 1: her struggles with depression, anxiety and other health challenges. So
- 20:12Speaker 1: over the years, she's documented her experience with endometriosis as
- 20:15Speaker 1: well as her surgeries to remove early cancer cells from
- 20:18Speaker 1: her breasts. We actually spoke about Isabel around a year
- 20:21Speaker 1: ago when she was launching her fashion line called Sunflower
- 20:25Speaker 1: Avenue and there was a bit of contention at the
- 20:27Speaker 1: time over some copyright issues. Yeah, it was pretty annoying
- 20:29Speaker 1: because she wasn't in the wrong and her community really
- 20:32Speaker 1: rallied behind her at the time. So four years prior
- 20:35Speaker 1: to her launching her own brand, she created this private
- 20:38Speaker 1: Instagram community called Sunflower Babies. And the point of it
- 20:41Speaker 1: was to share meaningful conversations with her followers online. And
- 20:45Speaker 1: this community really flourished and she started hosting in-person events
- 20:49Speaker 1: and community events. And then she thought, well, why not
- 20:52Speaker 1: launch a fashion label off the back of it? of
- 20:55Speaker 1: her brand is to blend fashion with self-care and mental
- 20:58Speaker 1: health awareness. So it's quite different to a lot of
- 21:02Speaker 1: influencers who just launch these brands to.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Get a quick buck.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Yeah, she seems to have a genuine connection with her community.
- 21:08Speaker 1: And I think that that's why her following has.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Continued to grow, particularly on TikTok.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and as you can see, she's really trying to
- 21:14Speaker 1: make a difference in the influencer space, which is why
- 21:16Speaker 1: so many people were upset when she got dragged into
- 21:19Speaker 1: the Anna Paul drama. It turns out she was a
- 21:22Speaker 1: topic of discussion in one of Anna Paul's group chats
- 21:25Speaker 1: that included Addis Paul and Michaela Tester. It's interesting because
- 21:29Speaker 1: when Anna first brought this up in her rebuttal video
- 21:32Speaker 1: to Michaela, she didn't include which influencer they were talking about.
- 21:37Speaker 1: She chose to blur the photo of Isabel Clark. And
- 21:41Speaker 1: it's apparent now why. Because she was trying to make
- 21:44Speaker 1: out like Michaela was speaking badly about her and the
- 21:48Speaker 1: closeness of her eyes, when in reality, it was actually
- 21:51Speaker 1: Anna Paul who kicked off the negative conversation about her. Yeah,
- 21:54Speaker 1: because she shared a screenshot of Isabel in the group
- 21:56Speaker 1: chat and wrote, fuck you, she's suggesting she looks like
- 21:58Speaker 1: Bella Hadid, which Addis replied, fuck that, screenshot for fuck's sake,
- 22:02Speaker 1: fuck's sake, man. Now, Michaela wrote back, I feel bad,
- 22:05Speaker 1: I guess she's making do with what she's got. Can't
- 22:07Speaker 1: hate on her for that. Anna then said she probably
- 22:10Speaker 1: talked shit about us too and said her eyes cut
- 22:12Speaker 1: off halfway through. Now, according to Anna, Michaela went on
- 22:15Speaker 1: to make derogatory comments about Isabel's eyes. However, Michaela claims
- 22:19Speaker 1: that she was actually talking about herself and it was
- 22:21Speaker 1: a typo. Yeah, now on Wednesday, Isabel uploaded a TikTok
- 22:24Speaker 1: addressing the drama and she aptly captioned it, some afternoon
- 22:27Speaker 1: thoughts from Bella Hadid herself.
- 22:29Speaker 2: So at least she was having some fun with it.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Now, while she didn't name Anna, she didn't need.
- 22:34Speaker 2: To because it was pretty clear who she was talking about.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Let's throw to some of what she said.
- 22:38Speaker 6: I can guarantee you that yes, this one influencer, isn't
- 22:43Speaker 6: who she portrayed herself to be online. And also to
- 22:46Speaker 6: me personally, like I thought, I thought we were cool,
- 22:49Speaker 6: you know, we'd reply to each other's stories and stuff.
- 22:51Speaker 6: So a bit weird, really, really fucking weird. But I
- 22:55Speaker 6: didn't read into our relationship too much or put too
- 22:58Speaker 6: much weight on who she was. You know, I was
- 23:00Speaker 6: only when I saw those little screenshots that I was like, oh.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Now, Isabel went on to say that a lot of
- 23:06Speaker 1: influencers are not how they represent themselves online. She also
- 23:10Speaker 1: said that the influencer world was superficial and it's the
- 23:13Speaker 1: reason why 99% of her friends are not online. It's
- 23:16Speaker 1: interesting because Isabel was part of Madison Woolley's influencer clique
- 23:20Speaker 1: in Sydney. Yeah, well, she's moved now to Melbourne, but
- 23:23Speaker 1: Madison Woolley's best friend, Caitlin Rodriguez, and her podcast co-host
- 23:26Speaker 1: is Isabel.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Isabel's manager.
- 23:28Speaker 1: So surely she is still friends with her. Maybe Madison
- 23:30Speaker 1: counts for one of the one percenters.
- 23:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Now, Isabel really broke the fourth wall when she revealed
- 23:35Speaker 1: just how awkward influencer events are. And it seems like
- 23:38Speaker 1: this is becoming a trend on TikTok for influencers to
- 23:40Speaker 1: dish the dirt about influencer events. Recently, Tilly Whitfield was
- 23:44Speaker 1: talking about how she doesn't like going to influencer events
- 23:48Speaker 1: and influencers seem to be wanting to call out other
- 23:50Speaker 1: influencers for.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Their bad behavior.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Do you think it comes down to competitiveness in the industry?
- 23:55Speaker 1: The industry is so oversaturated at the moment. And instead
- 24:00Speaker 1: of people becoming friends at these events and wanting to
- 24:02Speaker 1: help each other out, there's almost this rivalry that's happening.
- 24:06Speaker 2: You're absolutely correct. Because if you think back to the golden.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Days of Instagram, influencers actually wanted to make friends with
- 24:13Speaker 1: other influencers because there were so few of them and
- 24:16Speaker 1: they could capitalize on each other's following. So if you
- 24:19Speaker 1: appeared in one person's video, then they would send followers
- 24:22Speaker 1: your way.
- 24:22Speaker 2: And vice versa.
- 24:23Speaker 1: But there's just so many influences there that it's not
- 24:26Speaker 1: really that worthwhile.
- 24:28Speaker 2: And there's only so few jobs around. I also think
- 24:30Speaker 2: TikTok has really changed the game.
- 24:32Speaker 1: I think there's a bit of snobbery associated with those
- 24:35Speaker 1: who are big on TikTok as opposed to those who
- 24:37Speaker 1: have been in the industry for longer and have made
- 24:40Speaker 1: a name for themselves on Instagram and YouTube. I think
- 24:43Speaker 1: that a lot of those OG influences would see the TikTokers.
- 24:46Speaker 2: As not genuine influencers.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Creators or big names I think there'd be a lot
- 24:50Speaker 1: of ego associated with it which doesn't make sense to
- 24:53Speaker 1: me because I think in this day and age if
- 24:54Speaker 1: you're on TikTok and you've made it big you've had
- 24:56Speaker 1: to absolutely grind.
- 24:57Speaker 2: You're having to put out multiple videos a day.
- 24:59Speaker 1: But I think it's because we're seeing more normie influences
- 25:02Speaker 1: and everyday people you know, we're really enjoying people who
- 25:06Speaker 1: have an office job and do influencing or TikTok on
- 25:09Speaker 1: the side. Yeah. It's just not these rich models anymore.
- 25:12Speaker 1: It just all seems very high school. And I think
- 25:14Speaker 1: another big reason why these influencer events are so awkward
- 25:17Speaker 1: is because a lot of these influencers spend the majority
- 25:19Speaker 1: of their day.
- 25:20Speaker 2: At home, not talking to anyone, just filming themselves.
- 25:22Speaker 1: So to go out and actually have to talk to
- 25:25Speaker 1: other people, they haven't had the chance to develop those
- 25:28Speaker 1: social skills that a lot of us develop when we
- 25:30Speaker 1: have a part-time job or we go to uni and
- 25:33Speaker 1: we leave school.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Yeah, so true.
- 25:34Speaker 1: I feel like there's a bit of social anxiety that
- 25:36Speaker 1: happens when influencers have to go to these real life
- 25:39Speaker 1: events and talk to people. I also wonder if there's
- 25:42Speaker 1: a bit of contention over who's getting paid what to
- 25:45Speaker 1: attend events because gone are the days where influencers would
- 25:48Speaker 1: rock up to an event because it was something fun
- 25:50Speaker 1: to go to or they were getting a goodie bag.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Now influencers get paid different prices to attend events. So
- 25:57Speaker 1: maybe there's a bit of annoyance that someone's getting paid
- 25:59Speaker 1: more than them. It's so funny to think that so
- 26:01Speaker 1: many of us would actually want to attend these events.
- 26:04Speaker 1: But for influencers, it seems like it's like something.
- 26:06Speaker 2: That they hate going to, that they dread.
- 26:09Speaker 1: I have to say that a lot of these events
- 26:11Speaker 1: are boring and you feel like you're being used at them.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Now I am talking from the perspective of someone who
- 26:16Speaker 1: has worked in events before. I used to work at
- 26:19Speaker 1: a PR agency here in Adelaide that hosts a lot
- 26:21Speaker 1: of Adelaide events.
- 26:22Speaker 2: And I mean, some of them would be the opening
- 26:24Speaker 2: of an envelope. You know what I mean? It wouldn't
- 26:26Speaker 2: be something very exciting.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Adelaide's obviously different to Sydney and Melbourne, but you were
- 26:29Speaker 1: really having to beg people to come to these events
- 26:32Speaker 1: and you'd be having to invite a lot of low
- 26:34Speaker 1: scale influencers, people who just wanted to be seen somewhere.
- 26:38Speaker 1: And back then we weren't paying anyone to attend. So
- 26:40Speaker 1: there was even less incentive for people to go and post.
- 26:44Speaker 2: I just don't get it. Can't people just be adults
- 26:46Speaker 2: and talk to each other?
- 26:47Speaker 1: Because Isabel was complaining about how influencers won't talk to
- 26:50Speaker 1: other influencers and then She said that if they do
- 26:53Speaker 1: come up and talk to you, it's only for a
- 26:55Speaker 1: little while and then they scurry away. She also said
- 26:58Speaker 1: she often feels like other influencers were judging her or
- 27:01Speaker 1: talking about her behind her back.
- 27:03Speaker 2: She then said this.
- 27:04Speaker 6: It took a lot of trial and error for me,
- 27:07Speaker 6: you know, moving away from Sydney. And then, you know,
- 27:12Speaker 6: I started going to events again in Melbourne more recently
- 27:15Speaker 6: and the same thing happens again. Your Melbourne influences are
- 27:19Speaker 6: not who you think they are. Your Sydney influences are
- 27:22Speaker 6: not who you think they are. I can probably fully
- 27:26Speaker 6: acknowledge that I might not be who you think I am,
- 27:29Speaker 6: but I do think I am a very nice person.
- 27:31Speaker 6: And that's why a lot of my friends are not online.
- 27:36Speaker 1: She also went on to say that it's really unfortunate
- 27:38Speaker 1: her followers don't get the opportunity to see what influencers
- 27:41Speaker 1: are really like behind the scenes. And she said when
- 27:44Speaker 1: it comes to her brand, Sunflower Avenue, that she is
- 27:47Speaker 1: not going to be inviting influencers to her events for
- 27:49Speaker 1: the sake of it because they just don't care. And
- 27:52Speaker 1: she's only going to be inviting customers. So it seems
- 27:54Speaker 1: like she's taking a leaf out of Britt Selander's book.
- 27:57Speaker 2: I think inviting customers or at least a mix of
- 28:00Speaker 2: customers is really a good way forward because you're actually
- 28:03Speaker 2: getting people who are loyal to the brand. people who
- 28:06Speaker 2: are excited to be there and people who want to post. Oh,
- 28:09Speaker 2: it makes a lot of sense.
- 28:10Speaker 1: And as a consumer, you like to see loyalty and
- 28:13Speaker 1: customers being rewarded in this way.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Exactly right.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Now, I want to talk more about Isabel Clark and
- 28:18Speaker 1: how she got dragged into the Anna Paul drama.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Because I felt so sorry for her.
- 28:23Speaker 1: She said in her video that the comments regarding her
- 28:26Speaker 1: appearance were really triggering for her. And she was just
- 28:29Speaker 1: trying to focus on her own mental health. And it
- 28:32Speaker 1: was hard not to notice in the video that she
- 28:33Speaker 1: was wearing a very bold winged eyeliner. And all I
- 28:37Speaker 1: could think about was how Michaela Testa had spoken in
- 28:39Speaker 1: depth about how she used to wear a lot of
- 28:42Speaker 1: eyeliner after Anna Paul made comments about her eyes being
- 28:45Speaker 1: too close together. So I was like, wow, it must
- 28:47Speaker 1: have really made an impact on her. I feel like
- 28:49Speaker 1: potentially it was a bit of a pot shot because
- 28:51Speaker 1: she was trying to recreate how Michaela did her makeup
- 28:54Speaker 1: during that time. Or maybe she was trying to recreate
- 28:56Speaker 1: the Bella Hadid look that she'd previously done. Well, for
- 28:59Speaker 1: whatever reason, I do think the eyeliner was intentional. And
- 29:02Speaker 1: I could really tell when I watched this video that
- 29:04Speaker 1: the events of the past couple of weeks had really
- 29:06Speaker 1: rattled her But she was just so mature about it.
- 29:10Speaker 1: And I found it really interesting when she spoke about
- 29:12Speaker 1: influencers being co-workers.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Let's throw to what she said.
- 29:15Speaker 6: And this isn't even about me. I'm sure that that
- 29:18Speaker 6: little bit that was leaked is only a little smidge
- 29:24Speaker 6: of what is probably in those messages and in her
- 29:27Speaker 6: mind and in conversations. So it might not even just
- 29:30Speaker 6: be me. So I'm speaking to kind of just to anyone.
- 29:35Speaker 6: Be a genuine person. Your relationships in every part of
- 29:38Speaker 6: your life matter. And if you are an influencer, you know,
- 29:42Speaker 6: we don't have a lot of coworkers, you know, our
- 29:46Speaker 6: coworkers and our like customer report kind of comes from
- 29:50Speaker 6: our followers and you won't really have a job for
- 29:54Speaker 6: too long if you don't care about your followers and
- 29:57Speaker 6: you don't care about your community. You just won't. People
- 30:01Speaker 6: just need to care a little bit more. You know,
- 30:03Speaker 6: if you're an influencer, you have responsibility. If you don't
- 30:05Speaker 6: care about your fans or your followers or whatever, they'll
- 30:09Speaker 6: be able to tell eventually. So, you know, maybe start
- 30:13Speaker 6: caring or don't do the job.
- 30:15Speaker 2: What she said is so true.
- 30:16Speaker 1: And as you were talking about earlier, so if the
- 30:18Speaker 1: influencer market is currently so saturated, so influencers really do
- 30:23Speaker 1: have to put a lot of effort in with their
- 30:25Speaker 1: followers to attract them and keep them. It's interesting because
- 30:29Speaker 1: I feel like influencer brand trips are quite different to
- 30:32Speaker 1: your run-of-the-mill influencer event where there's a large number of
- 30:35Speaker 1: people invited. Because talking before about Martha Califatidis, she has
- 30:40Speaker 1: become best friends with Jackie Alexander and the other women
- 30:43Speaker 1: on this trip.
- 30:44Speaker 2: They seem to have actually forged a genuine friendship.
- 30:47Speaker 1: So maybe it's easier for influencers to become friends on
- 30:51Speaker 1: these smaller, more intimate trips where they're actually traveling together.
- 30:54Speaker 1: away with one another and they sort of have to
- 30:56Speaker 1: get along because they're there for longer.
- 30:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Maybe it's because they don't get a plus one. So
- 31:00Speaker 1: they can't just stick with whoever they've brought along to
- 31:02Speaker 1: the event. They are forced to make friends. I do
- 31:05Speaker 1: like this concept though, of influencers being one another's co-workers,
- 31:09Speaker 1: because if you're working side by side with people in
- 31:13Speaker 1: the same industry, you really have to work out a
- 31:15Speaker 1: way to get along. You can't be slagging one another off.
- 31:18Speaker 1: It just makes you look unprofessional. And this is a
- 31:20Speaker 1: job at the end of the day. Well, I think
- 31:22Speaker 1: that is all we have time for today. Thank you
- 31:24Speaker 1: so much for joining us for this episode. If you
- 31:26Speaker 1: have enjoyed it, could you please make sure you are
