Speaker 7: I'm so excited so tonight. I don't know if you
• 1:09
Speaker 7: guys have heard a buzz in the air here in Charleston,
• 1:11
Speaker 7: and it's not the regatta Wheregatta is coming on this
• 1:14
Speaker 7: coming Friday, the TBT will be returning to the Charleston
• 1:17
Speaker 7: Coliseum and Convention Center. For those of you that don't
• 1:20
Speaker 7: know in our audience. The TBT is an acronym for
• 1:23
Speaker 7: the Basketball Tournament. It's a unique type of single elimination
• 1:28
Speaker 7: format in basketball. It came into fruition in twenty fourteen
• 1:32
Speaker 7: and there are approximately sixty four teams competing for a
• 1:35
Speaker 7: one thousand dollars prize. And tonight we are lucky enough
• 1:39
Speaker 7: to have two of the head coaches that are affiliated
• 1:44
Speaker 7: with the Mountain State and Marshall University's alumni team which
• 1:47
Speaker 7: has heard that, and Best Virginia, which is going to
• 1:50
Speaker 7: be later. But I'm going to introduce our first guests,
• 1:53
Speaker 7: and that is Aunt Elmore. Welcome ot to the podcast.
• 1:57
Speaker 8: Oh thanks for having me. I'm glad to be on.
• 2:00
Speaker 6: Oh so glad to have you.
• 2:00
Speaker 7: So I'm going to give our audience a little bit
• 2:03
Speaker 7: of history for you out So audist from Charleston, West Virginia.
• 2:07
Speaker 7: He is he is, you know, part of basketball royalty.
• 2:11
Speaker 7: We could say he's the son of Jay Elmore and
• 2:14
Speaker 7: brother of John and he uh was a former guard
• 2:18
Speaker 7: at Marshall University from the years twenty sixteen through twenty eighteen.
• 2:23
Speaker 7: He is also now serving as the GM and head
• 2:27
Speaker 7: coach of TBT tournaments.
• 2:29
Speaker 6: Heard that, so I want to ask the first question, Carl.
• 2:35
Speaker 3: Well, then I can go on, I can.
• 2:36
Speaker 6: Go on, I can just steal the show.
• 2:39
Speaker 3: I'm gonna let you got to run it here a
• 2:40
  Speaker 3: little bit.
• 2:41
Speaker 5: But you know, my my question is like when you
• 2:46
Speaker 5: when you when you're sitting and you're thinking about and
• 2:48
Speaker 5: you're hearing someone at let's say, introduce you. The history
• 2:54
Speaker 5: of the Elmoares in basketball is really an amazing thing.
• 3:00
Speaker 5: And again I hate to say this, but it's probably
• 3:03
Speaker 5: something that has not been talked about enough.
• 3:07
Speaker 3: But what does that feel like.
• 3:09
Speaker 5: When you hear that introduction and you realize what a
• 3:14
Speaker 5: legacy that you guys have had.
• 3:18
Speaker 8: I'm really just blessed. You know, one person that you
• 3:21
Speaker 8: all forgot to mention as my grandfather who was the
• 3:23
Speaker 8: first team All state yeah wall player at Stonewall Jacks
• 3:27
Speaker 8: and then a scholarship player at West Virginia University, you know,
• 3:31
Speaker 8: following up Jerry West. So from my grandfathers and my
• 3:35
Speaker 8: fathers and me and John, we are just extremely blessed,
• 3:39
Speaker 8: and you know, we have a great family legacy, and
• 3:42
Speaker 8: you know, we're just fortunate that each of us had
• 3:44
Speaker 8: the success that we were able to have.
• 3:47
  Speaker 6: That's awesome.
• 3:47
Speaker 7: So we're going to go back a little bit in
• 3:49
Speaker 7: your in your career, and we're going to look at
• 3:51
Speaker 7: the year twenty fourteen. I know that you and John
• 3:55
Speaker 7: were enrolled at vm I and both members of their
• 3:58
Speaker 7: basketball team, and some difficulties happened while you were.
• 4:02
Speaker 6: On that team and in that school.
• 4:04
Speaker 7: Could you tell us a little bit about that experience
• 4:07
  Speaker 7: at vm I.
• 4:09
Speaker 8: Yeah, we were both at v my it was I
• 4:12
Speaker 8: had red shirted the previous year waiting for John to
• 4:15
Speaker 8: come and we were going to play four years together. Unfortunately,
• 4:19
Speaker 8: the first semester his freshman year, which would be my
• 4:21
Speaker 8: red shirt freshman year, at this point, my grandfather got
• 4:25
Speaker 8: very sick, terminally ill. Unfortunately, me and my brother ended
• 4:29
Speaker 8: up leave him school for that whole semester and coming
• 4:33
Speaker 8: home and we lived with him and helped take care
• 4:37
Speaker 8: of him. One of us spent the night with him
• 4:39
Speaker 8: every night. So it was a tough decision to leave school,
• 4:42
Speaker 8: but one that you know, we looked back on and
• 4:44
Speaker 8: we're blessed to spent the time with my grandfather that
• 4:47
Speaker 8: we did. And ultimately we both were pretty successful and
• 4:52
Speaker 8: I think everything worked out the way it was supposed to.
• 4:54
Speaker 5: When I'd make the case that when you have to
• 4:57
Speaker 5: make that type of a decision, which not a lot
• 4:59
Speaker 5: of people have ever been in that probably.
• 5:02
Speaker 3: Position to have to to pick family.
• 5:06
Speaker 5: Over a sport and a sport that you know that
• 5:10
Speaker 5: you are really good at and it's possibly going to
• 5:13
Speaker 5: bring you a lasting future. I can only compliment you
• 5:19
Speaker 5: on on that type of a decision. And I don't
• 5:24
Speaker 5: want to ask the question like, was there any point
• 5:27
Speaker 5: in time that you were like, you know, hey, where's
• 5:32
Speaker 5: basketball going to be? You know when we get done
• 5:35
Speaker 5: with this? You know, because I'm thinking obviously you know,
• 5:39
  Speaker 5: it's a kind of a cold question, but I think
• 5:42
Speaker 5: there's confidence in there and certainty in there that you
• 5:46
Speaker 5: guys knew that you know, you could have you could
• 5:51
Speaker 5: have that time with your with your grandfather and and
• 5:55
Speaker 5: sports will be fine wherever it ends up being.
• 5:58
Speaker 8: Is that, oh, absolutely exactly right. You know, we didn't
• 6:02
Speaker 8: look at it as we're gonna leave school and you know,
• 6:04
Speaker 8: this could be, this could be over forever. I think
• 6:08
Speaker 8: we were both fairly confident that you know, hey, let's
• 6:11
Speaker 8: we're gonna take a break right now, We're gonna go
• 6:13
Speaker 8: home be with our grandfather.
• 6:16
  Speaker 9: Uh, this is.
• 6:16
Speaker 8: Something we can come back to you know, we we
• 6:20
Speaker 8: felt fairly confident that we would be able to come
• 6:22
Speaker 8: back to it, and in the end, I think I
• 6:26
Speaker 8: speak for both me and John, we ended up making
• 6:28
Speaker 8: the right decisions. His path let them to Marshall. My path,
• 6:30
Speaker 8: let me, you know, to a school in Texas and
• 6:33
Speaker 8: then back to Marshall and ultimately finished up, you know,
• 6:36
Speaker 8: making the NCAA tournament at Marshall and a pretty special experience.
• 6:39
Speaker 8: So I think everything worked out exactly how it was
• 6:42
  Speaker 8: supposed to.
• 6:43
Speaker 5: Do you guys think that, because I do. I think
• 6:46
Speaker 5: your trip back to Marshall was was really the growth
• 6:51
  Speaker 5: in Marshall's basketball.
• 6:53
Speaker 8: Yeah, And I wouldn't say it was. It was It
• 6:56
Speaker 8: started with coach D'Antoni, to be honest with you. He
• 6:59
Speaker 8: came in and Marshall for a while didn't recruit very
• 7:02
Speaker 8: many you know, local players to the basketball program. Coach
• 7:06
Speaker 8: Santoni came in and he started recruiting immediately the West
• 7:10
Speaker 8: Virginia kids. There was Stevie Brownie from Logan, John C. J. Burks,
• 7:15
Speaker 8: Jared West, the son of Jared West that you're gonna
• 7:18
Speaker 8: have one here in a little bit, Rondell Watson, and
• 7:22
Speaker 8: so not only did he start recruiting local kids, which
• 7:25
Speaker 8: sort of built an excitement for the fans. As you know,
• 7:28
Speaker 8: you have local kids playing, you're getting more fans support.
• 7:32
Speaker 8: It turns out we have some pretty good basketball players
• 7:34
Speaker 8: here in West Virginia, and it was the good combinations,
• 7:37
Speaker 8: you know, to lift that program up from where coach
• 7:39
Speaker 8: Antoni found it. And it's in a pretty good place now.
• 7:42
  Speaker 6: All right.
• 7:42
Speaker 7: So you just touched on this a minute ago out
• 7:45
Speaker 7: But let's fast forward to the year twenty eighteen when
• 7:49
Speaker 7: you and John contributed to that NCAA basketball tournament run.
• 7:53
Speaker 7: It was the first time the heard had been dancing
• 7:55
Speaker 7: since nineteen eighty seven.
• 7:57
Speaker 6: I remember it. It was amazing.
• 7:58
Speaker 7: It was so much fun to watch you on the court.
• 8:01
Speaker 7: Tell us a little bit about that experience for you.
• 8:03
Speaker 6: And for the team.
• 8:05
Speaker 8: Oh, it was a special, special run. I remember going
• 8:09
Speaker 8: down the Conference USA tournament in Frisco, Texas at the
• 8:12
Speaker 8: Dallas Cowboys practice facility, and we won our first game,
• 8:17
Speaker 8: and playing at the same time as US was the
• 8:19
Speaker 8: sort of a thorn in our side was Middle Tennessee State,
• 8:21
Speaker 8: who had beat US in the conference championship the year before.
• 8:25
Speaker 8: They end up getting upset and it was at that point,
• 8:28
Speaker 8: you know, it was like, oh wow, this really just
• 8:30
Speaker 8: opened up for everybody. We were playing our best basketball
• 8:34
Speaker 8: of the year. We had won the last couple of
• 8:36
Speaker 8: games of the regular season, and in fact, Middle Tennessee
• 8:38
Speaker 8: was top twenty five in the country. We won at
• 8:40
Speaker 8: their place, So we were on a good little run.
• 8:43
Speaker 8: We ran through the conference tournament, played Western Kentucky in
• 8:45
Speaker 8: the championship, had a big lead, they cut into it,
• 8:50
Speaker 8: but ultimately we were able to get it done. And
• 8:51
Speaker 8: then and then you know, it was just a special week.
• 8:54
Speaker 8: And then you go to the NCAA tournament. We got
• 8:56
Speaker 8: a great first round matchup that we thought in Wichita
• 8:58
Speaker 8: State persunately able to beat them. So it was just
• 9:02
Speaker 8: a special, special time and a special thing to be
• 9:04
Speaker 8: a part of because that's memories, you know, we'll have
• 9:07
Speaker 8: forever and it's just an experience none of us will
• 9:09
  Speaker 8: ever forget.
• 9:11
Speaker 5: Okay, And and we've we've talked, we've talked to different
• 9:14
Speaker 5: athletes and and had different types of conversations around the
• 9:20
Speaker 5: work ethic that's required to become great. Could you talk
• 9:26
Speaker 5: about yours just make you make the case the families
• 9:31
Speaker 5: work work ethic in basketball and what what what kind
• 9:36
Speaker 5: of time you spent and what all that you did
• 9:39
Speaker 5: to make sure that you guys were going to be
• 9:42
Speaker 5: the best that you could possibly be.
• 9:45
Speaker 8: All we worked all the time, and that that was
• 9:48
Speaker 8: you know you asked about leaving school. Take care of
• 9:50
Speaker 8: our grandfather During the summer while my dad was working
• 9:53
Speaker 8: and we weren't in school. My grandfather would pick up
• 9:55
Speaker 8: me and my brother every day and take us down
• 9:58
Speaker 8: at lunch time and u on the outdoor course of
• 10:00
Speaker 8: South Rolston Middle School and put us through an hour
• 10:02
Speaker 8: and a half workout every day at lunch, and then
• 10:05
Speaker 8: we'd work out again at night. We'd play one on
• 10:08
Speaker 8: one in the driveway or horse in the driveway. So
• 10:11
Speaker 8: it's just you gotta love it, and it doesn't then
• 10:13
Speaker 8: it doesn't feel like work.
• 10:14
  Speaker 9: You know.
• 10:14
Speaker 8: People talk about you have to have a work ethics,
• 10:17
Speaker 8: but it's really not grinding it out. It's really just
• 10:19
Speaker 8: if you love it and enjoy doing it. The more
• 10:21
Speaker 8: time you spend, the more you'll flourish and it'll show.
• 10:25
Speaker 8: And uh, we were able to come by it naturally
• 10:27
Speaker 8: with my dad and my grandpa. So yeah, we just
• 10:30
Speaker 8: spent all the time we had in the gym because
• 10:32
Speaker 8: that's what we like to do, and it ended up
• 10:34
Speaker 8: paying off for us.
• 10:36
Speaker 5: That's good man, and I have to kind of I've
• 10:39
Speaker 5: never really thought of it that way. So I'm glad
• 10:41
Speaker 5: that you said it because from we've had we constantly
• 10:43
Speaker 5: go back and forth with conversations like this, because my
• 10:47
Speaker 5: love for football, like me getting up and running, was
• 10:50
Speaker 5: not like a punishing thing. It wasn't like I was
• 10:53
Speaker 5: oh gosh or nobody necessarily made me do that. I
• 10:58
Speaker 5: just wanted to be as good as I possibly can,
• 11:01
Speaker 5: and I knew that it would take work, and you
• 11:04
Speaker 5: didn't need that extra motivation.
• 11:07
Speaker 8: Right, it's my you know, people call it the grind,
• 11:10
Speaker 8: and you know I understand that, but you're not really
• 11:12
Speaker 8: grinding it, doubt if that's what you like to do.
• 11:14
Speaker 8: You know, I'd rather be shooting basketball than you know,
• 11:16
Speaker 8: doing anything. So it was it was just what I enjoyed,
• 11:20
Speaker 8: and because I enjoyed it, you know, it was that
• 11:22
Speaker 8: much easier to do it as much as I wanted to.
• 11:24
Speaker 6: Yeah, all right, that that's awesome.
• 11:27
Speaker 7: So so we're gonna We're gonna go to the reason
• 11:30
Speaker 7: we have you on the show.
• 11:31
  Speaker 9: Now.
• 11:31
Speaker 7: We had to get that history. I could talk about
• 11:33
Speaker 7: your your past play and the game. When when you
• 11:36
Speaker 7: guys ended up playing WVU in the tournament, that was
• 11:40
Speaker 7: that was something that was a thing of beauty and
• 11:42
Speaker 7: some of the some of the things that happened. But anyway,
• 11:45
Speaker 7: so we're gonna focus now on the TV t So,
• 11:47
Speaker 7: you know, in this tournament you have you know, athletes
• 11:50
Speaker 7: on teams that are they're just a diverse group coming
• 11:53
Speaker 7: from different styles of play, you know, different schools of thought.
• 11:57
Speaker 7: So how do you adopt your coaching style to the
• 11:59
Speaker 7: team et format. You've got this mix of former college
• 12:03
Speaker 7: and professional players. What do you do to make that team.
• 12:06
Speaker 8: Gel Well, I think the main thing we do is
• 12:10
Speaker 8: not so much, you know, not so much as coaching related.
• 12:13
Speaker 8: Is we bring the guys in you know, four or
• 12:15
Speaker 8: five days in advance. We put them up in a hotel.
• 12:18
Speaker 8: We practice a couple of times a day, and it's
• 12:21
Speaker 8: not so much practice, But then we do team dinners
• 12:23
Speaker 8: where kids are where guys are bringing their kids, where
• 12:25
Speaker 8: guys are bringing their wives or girlfriends and just hanging out.
• 12:28
Speaker 8: And more so than the ex'es and o's and basketball
• 12:30
Speaker 8: is you know, we have our core group of Marshall
• 12:33
Speaker 8: guys that are like brothers from our time at Marshall.
• 12:35
Speaker 8: But we've sort of adopted these other guys from the
• 12:38
Speaker 8: TVC team into that little family. And I think that's
• 12:42
Speaker 8: really our big advantage is guys really like each other.
• 12:46
  Speaker 9: You know.
• 12:46
Speaker 8: We'll have JP Tokoto, who's from played at North Carolina,
• 12:49
Speaker 8: he's played with us the last couple of years. He
• 12:50
Speaker 8: comes in, he'll be playing with John's girls at dinner,
• 12:53
Speaker 8: you know, like like that's their uncle JP. So that's
• 12:57
Speaker 8: sort of you know, that's sort of the coaching or
• 13:00
Speaker 8: chemistry that we tried to build in terms of x's
• 13:02
Speaker 8: and o's. These guys are pros. We just let them
• 13:05
Speaker 8: go out there and we play the game and you know,
• 13:06
Speaker 8: try to put him in the right direction. But I
• 13:08
Speaker 8: think that's where our big advantages is the chemistry that
• 13:11
Speaker 8: we've been able to build with our teams.
• 13:13
  Speaker 3: I see I.
• 13:14
Speaker 5: Saw something on I don't know if it was on
• 13:16
Speaker 5: Facebook or where it was, but there was a conversation
• 13:20
Speaker 5: or an article about not having a like a clipboard
• 13:26
Speaker 5: to like draw out your place, like you're just kind
• 13:28
Speaker 5: of like writing them down on the floor, you know, And.
• 13:35
Speaker 3: Is it that are you that comfortable in the players.
• 13:42
Speaker 5: That you're coaching that, Hey, they're gonna get it.
• 13:46
Speaker 8: Oh absolutely, because you know, John's our point guard, so
• 13:49
Speaker 8: he's sort of our coach on the floor. I always
• 13:51
Speaker 8: trust him to get everybody in the right spot. But
• 13:53
Speaker 8: that's what we look into when we recruit these guys,
• 13:56
Speaker 8: is you know, are you good? Are are they good guys?
• 13:58
Speaker 8: Mainly because you know they're around everybody's kids, around everybody's
• 14:01
Speaker 8: girlfriends and families. So if they're good guys, we bring
• 14:04
Speaker 8: them in. And those are the type of guys you
• 14:05
Speaker 8: can trust, you know, get stuff done when it starts
• 14:08
Speaker 8: getting tough. And I know what you're talking about. My
• 14:10
Speaker 8: grandpa started when he coached my dad. He had a
• 14:12
Speaker 8: little piece of chalk and before they had clipboard, and
• 14:16
Speaker 8: he would just draw on the sideline a little with
• 14:18
Speaker 8: his piece of chalk. And so my dad did that
• 14:21
Speaker 8: with us, and you know, he always brings this piece
• 14:23
Speaker 8: of chalk and that's just how we get it done.
• 14:25
  Speaker 6: You know nowadays, that's that's that's crazy. That's so good
• 14:30
  Speaker 6: to know.
• 14:31
Speaker 7: So in this tournament, you know, you've got to maintain
• 14:35
Speaker 7: team morale. We you know, we we alluded to earlier.
• 14:38
Speaker 7: It's unique type of single elimination. There's a lot of
• 14:42
Speaker 7: high stakes involved. It's it's intense. So how do how
• 14:46
Speaker 7: do you create besides you know, bringing the guys together,
• 14:49
Speaker 7: how do you keep the team morale throughout a demanding
• 14:52
Speaker 7: tournament positive? I mean, do you create how do you
• 14:54
Speaker 7: create that winning culture in your team?
• 14:57
Speaker 8: Well, I think the winning culture was sort of we
• 15:00
Speaker 8: talked about it earlier with Marshall is it's just a
• 15:02
Speaker 8: continuation of Coach Santoni. We have guys although they don't
• 15:06
Speaker 8: play as much now, Steve Browning, Ryan Taylor, Rondo Watson,
• 15:10
Speaker 8: you know, are older, all working real jobs now, not
• 15:12
Speaker 8: playing professionally. Those guys may not play a second all game,
• 15:16
Speaker 8: but they have good attitudes on the bench over there,
• 15:18
Speaker 8: boosting their teammates up. And that's just something that coach
• 15:21
Speaker 8: Santoni said is you know, it's about the team. It's
• 15:24
Speaker 8: not about you. It's about you know, it's not about
• 15:26
Speaker 8: how far you go in the car ride, It's about
• 15:28
Speaker 8: how much you enjoy it. And you guys like that
• 15:31
Speaker 8: who just accept their role in our team first, and
• 15:34
Speaker 8: that bleeds over to the guys who are playing. If
• 15:36
Speaker 8: you know, if the guys who aren't playing are just
• 15:38
Speaker 8: there you know, you know, to make sure everything goes
• 15:40
Speaker 8: all right, or having a good time and having a
• 15:41
Speaker 8: good attitude. If you're playing and getting time, you know,
• 15:44
Speaker 8: you can't help but be positive. And that energy is infectious.
• 15:46
Speaker 8: And we have a bunch of good guys on that team,
• 15:49
Speaker 8: and uh we recruit we recruit good guys as well,
• 15:52
Speaker 8: and that sort of it just sort of builds on itself.
• 15:54
Speaker 8: At snowball, it's a snowball effect.
• 15:56
Speaker 5: This this is a little bit off off that path,
• 16:00
Speaker 5: But because of what you said, if you were, if
• 16:03
Speaker 5: you were talking to a high school coach, maybe even
• 16:07
Speaker 5: a college coach who's looking to recruit a player.
• 16:12
Speaker 3: Sometimes I think today, the better.
• 16:15
Speaker 5: You are as as an athlete, you know, a coacher
• 16:19
Speaker 5: wants you and they'll even sacrifice some of the down
• 16:24
Speaker 5: falls that come with that. If you were, if you
• 16:28
Speaker 5: were to talk to a coach and say, hey, these
• 16:31
Speaker 5: how do you interview a particular player, What do you
• 16:33
Speaker 5: sit down and what are you looking for? How do
• 16:35
Speaker 5: you evaluate past their skill set? Because I know a
• 16:40
Speaker 5: lot of times when I was recruited back quote back
• 16:43
Speaker 5: in the day, the coaches really didn't they they've already
• 16:47
Speaker 5: saw what you do as an athlete. Now they want
• 16:50
Speaker 5: to try to figure out who you are as a person.
• 16:52
Speaker 5: That process I think parents today are not aware of
• 16:56
Speaker 5: that that's going to happen. And if your child or
• 17:00
Speaker 5: athlete can't can't meet that criteria, Like how important do
• 17:06
Speaker 5: you do you think that is for you guys on
• 17:09
Speaker 5: your team and how how how critical is it for
• 17:12
Speaker 5: a kid from high school trying to go to college?
• 17:14
Speaker 8: Oh, it's it's extremely critical. I coach college basketball at
• 17:18
Speaker 8: Glenville State for a couple of years once I got
• 17:21
Speaker 8: done at Marshall as the assistant coach, and that's something
• 17:23
Speaker 8: we looked at was, you know, our saying was great
• 17:26
Speaker 8: kids do great things. So yes, you can be tremendously talented,
• 17:30
Speaker 8: but if you're if you know, if you're doing if
• 17:32
Speaker 8: you're not going to class, if you're getting in trouble,
• 17:34
Speaker 8: you know it's going to bleed over and infect the court.
• 17:36
Speaker 8: And there's a lot of kids that have talent across
• 17:39
Speaker 8: the country. So that's the thing that differentiates these kids
• 17:43
Speaker 8: is how good of attitudes you have, what kind of
• 17:45
Speaker 8: person you are, because the good tea for are the
• 17:47
Speaker 8: ones that you can count on to get things done
• 17:49
Speaker 8: when times start getting tough, and uh so that's what
• 17:51
Speaker 8: we you know, we we recruited at Glenville like that.
• 17:55
Speaker 8: Most colleges do recruit like that, and that's what we
• 17:57
Speaker 8: sort of do with TVT is you want people that
• 18:00
Speaker 8: you know, even if you're going to lose some you
• 18:02
Speaker 8: want people you're going to enjoy losing with and aren't
• 18:05
Speaker 8: going to like turn on each other. And I think
• 18:06
Speaker 8: that's one reason we're so successful in this tournament is
• 18:09
Speaker 8: even though you know it may go against you for
• 18:11
Speaker 8: a little bit, we have guys that rally together and
• 18:13
Speaker 8: we always find a way to bounce back.
• 18:15
  Speaker 6: That's awesome.
• 18:16
Speaker 7: Okay, So I have a question related to this week's tournament.
• 18:20
Speaker 7: I know that you you know, you're aware that Heard
• 18:23
Speaker 7: That is in one bracket and you've got Best Virginia
• 18:26
Speaker 7: in the other bracket, and it's set up that if
• 18:28
Speaker 7: you both teams, you know, respectively, win their games, you
• 18:31
Speaker 7: would face each other on Sunday, which in the state
• 18:35
Speaker 7: of West Virginia it's kind of viewed as a rivalry game.
• 18:39
Speaker 7: Do you guys feel that like kind of vibe that
• 18:44
Speaker 7: it's it's not just Best Virginia versus Heard That, but
• 18:48
Speaker 7: it's more like Marshall versus WVU. Do you feed off
• 18:51
Speaker 7: of that type of like energy in the crowd.
• 18:55
Speaker 8: Well, yes, we feed off the energy in the crowd
• 18:58
Speaker 8: because the crowd is amazing. You know, the people just
• 19:01
Speaker 8: love basketball. They come out. But we've you know personally,
• 19:05
Speaker 8: you know, we play up to it, but we think
• 19:07
Speaker 8: that rivalry is a little you know, overblown because in
• 19:10
Speaker 8: the summers, we know those West Virginia guys, they know us.
• 19:14
Speaker 8: You know, we play pick up together in the summer.
• 19:16
Speaker 8: We like those guys. I like to think they like us.
• 19:19
Speaker 8: So you know, it's not a bad blood rivalry between us.
• 19:22
Speaker 8: We both sides realize, you know, the schools are the
• 19:25
Speaker 8: two schools in West Virginia. But you know those those
• 19:28
Speaker 8: are good guys on that side and we get along
• 19:31
Speaker 8: with them. And I would hope that, you know, next year,
• 19:34
Speaker 8: if he keeps going forward, they put us a little
• 19:36
Speaker 8: bit farther in the bracket, maybe we meet in the
• 19:37
Speaker 8: championship instead. Right, Yeah, but that energy will be electric
• 19:41
  Speaker 8: at the Civic.
• 19:42
  Speaker 6: Center for sure.
• 19:43
Speaker 7: Okay, so we've appreciated your time. We're about to let
• 19:46
Speaker 7: you go. Do you is there anything you want to
• 19:48
Speaker 7: share with our audience, what you're doing now as far
• 19:50
Speaker 7: as business or anything.
• 19:53
Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm a turn in Froston. So if anybody needs
• 19:56
Speaker 8: any illegal help, come on down see me. I have
• 19:58
Speaker 8: an office in downtown Charston. But outside of that, I
• 20:02
Speaker 8: just hope people come out support. We play at six
• 20:05
Speaker 8: on Friday, best Virginia plays at eight. Come out root
• 20:08
Speaker 8: us both on and then hopefully come out Sunday and
• 20:10
Speaker 8: see another heck of a game.
• 20:12
Speaker 6: Can't wait to see it? All right, well, thank you,
• 20:14
  Speaker 6: all right.
• 20:14
Speaker 3: Man, we appreciate you being on.
• 20:16
  Speaker 8: No, thank you.
• 20:16
Speaker 5: All all right, ladies and gentlemen. We'll take a quick
• 20:19
Speaker 5: break and we will be right back.
• 20:20
Speaker 10: Let's face it, bad things happen to good people seriously
• 20:23
Speaker 10: injured in a car accident, trucking accident, injured in a
• 20:25
Speaker 10: grocery store, or even wrongfully arrested or falsely accused of
• 20:29
Speaker 10: a crime. Life happens, and when it happens to you,
• 20:31
Speaker 10: you will need sound legal advice and aggressive representation. That's
• 20:34
Speaker 10: when you call Attorney Frank Walker at three zero four

Speaker 4: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's talk is
• 21:16
Speaker 4: prompably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, real experience,
• 21:21
Speaker 4: Real results, Frank Walker Law dot com. Let that conversation
• 21:25
Speaker 4: begin on Let's talk.
• 21:27
Speaker 3: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are back Lisa.
• 21:31
Speaker 5: You know, one of the interesting things about about the
• 21:34
Speaker 5: conversation that we have had just here recently, I'm learning
• 21:41
Speaker 5: more so about athletes that are that are great. Like
• 21:48
Speaker 5: if you listen to this his conversation right like you
• 21:52
Speaker 5: you don't even get that, like you don't get to
• 21:54
Speaker 5: feel like of a person who has some kind of
• 21:58
Speaker 5: like great history in basketball.
• 22:01
Speaker 3: It's like he's just kind of like talking.
• 22:03
Speaker 5: And I think that that, to me, I think is
• 22:07
Speaker 5: so important that you don't get that they're not full
• 22:11
Speaker 5: of their selves, but they know that they know how
• 22:14
Speaker 5: great they have been, but they don't throw it at you, right,
• 22:17
Speaker 5: It doesn't come across like they're saying that.
• 22:20
Speaker 7: The ego and arrogance is out the window. It seems
• 22:22
Speaker 7: like when they come on the air with us, which
• 22:24
Speaker 7: is refreshing. Yes, it's not the persona of the athletes
• 22:28
Speaker 7: some of the athletes you see on television, let's just
• 22:30
Speaker 7: put it that way. I do feel like he is
• 22:35
Speaker 7: genuine and he was very human about telling his experience
• 22:38
Speaker 7: with his grandfather and the VM I think, and I
• 22:41
Speaker 7: think that was just such a dynamic and selfless thing
• 22:47
Speaker 7: that they did to put their basketball. They could have
• 22:50
Speaker 7: possibly ruined what they had well at VMI, you know,
• 22:54
Speaker 7: And what they did was they put their career, their
• 22:58
Speaker 7: future on hold to care for a loved one. And
• 23:02
Speaker 7: to me, that just speaks volumes about the kind of
• 23:05
Speaker 7: character that Odd has.
• 23:07
Speaker 3: That and family and and and.
• 23:09
Speaker 6: The family and family absolutely.
• 23:11
Speaker 5: And you know, you would think, to your to your point,
• 23:15
Speaker 5: you would think that that most people would be like, no,
• 23:18
Speaker 5: just you know, he would want you to play. He
• 23:21
Speaker 5: would want you to play, so go play, you know,
• 23:24
Speaker 5: And and I could see that convincing me to go,
• 23:28
Speaker 5: you know. But it was it was so important for
• 23:31
Speaker 5: them that there seems to be that there was no
• 23:34
Speaker 5: conversation happening that was going to stop us from because
• 23:38
Speaker 5: can can you imagine being a coach? Can you imagine
• 23:41
Speaker 5: being a team of teammates like you want, you need
• 23:44
  Speaker 5: these guys.
• 23:45
Speaker 6: Yeah, And I'm not sure what time of year that occurred.
• 23:48
Speaker 7: I don't know if it was in basketball season, but
• 23:50
Speaker 7: you know, definitely they weren't there.
• 23:51
Speaker 6: When they weren't it began or ended.
• 23:53
Speaker 7: So another dynamic that I thought was interesting in our conversation.
• 23:58
Speaker 7: It's always the same with when you ask players about rivalries.
• 24:04
Speaker 7: The rivalries don't exist. And you've even said this, the
• 24:07
Speaker 7: rivalries exist between fans. The players all seem to know
• 24:11
Speaker 7: each other and get on. And I'll be interested because
• 24:13
Speaker 7: I would like to present that question to our next
• 24:15
Speaker 7: guest as well and see what his perspective is. But
• 24:18
Speaker 7: to the fans that you know, go to Marshall and
• 24:22
Speaker 7: go to WVU when they play each other, it's a
• 24:24
Speaker 7: big deal. But to you know, to the players, they
• 24:26
Speaker 7: all they all kind of connect and know each other,
• 24:28
Speaker 7: and you know they play hard, but it's not the kind.
• 24:32
Speaker 5: Of and I think there's also the respect of the
• 24:35
Speaker 5: of the of that of that player. So if I'm
• 24:38
Speaker 5: if we're rivals, you know, but I know you you know,
• 24:43
Speaker 5: so you know, I'm going to go.
• 24:44
Speaker 7: Social media has changed a lot of that. I think
• 24:46
Speaker 7: social media it's not like it used to be, like
• 24:49
Speaker 7: they can all connect.
• 24:50
Speaker 5: I think social media has taken away that good battery
• 24:55
Speaker 5: indifferent you know. But you know, even even the friendship
• 24:59
Speaker 5: that you know we had Sterling Sterling sharp one not
• 25:02
  Speaker 5: too long ago.
• 25:05
Speaker 3: And and the Viking packer raval.
• 25:08
Speaker 5: Is that's yeah, yeah, it's constant, you know, you being
• 25:12
  Speaker 5: a packer brand.
• 25:13
Speaker 3: We joke back and forth about it.
• 25:15
Speaker 6: But but then don'te.
• 25:17
Speaker 7: Calpepper when you told him, was like, ah, that's okay, yeah,
• 25:19
Speaker 7: you know, I mean, I guess it's just the whole
• 25:22
Speaker 7: attitude of the of the player, of.
• 25:24
Speaker 6: The players of the player.
• 25:25
Speaker 11: Do you guys think that maybe the especially I think
• 25:29
Speaker 11: back to like nineties TV, do you think that media
• 25:32
Speaker 11: has had a play in sort of creating this almost
• 25:35
Speaker 11: larger than life persona for a lot of these players,
• 25:38
Speaker 11: Because I'm what I'm with you, Carl. I think, as
• 25:40
Speaker 11: we've had these different folks on on your podcast every week,
• 25:44
Speaker 11: it seems like humble is the best description for so
• 25:48
Speaker 11: many of these guys. And I think there's maybe this
• 25:52
Speaker 11: kind of disconnect on from a fan perspective of thinking, well,
• 25:56
Speaker 11: you know, they're a professional athlete, or they've they've done whatever,
• 25:58
Speaker 11: so they're this larger than life personally, we forget that
• 26:01
Speaker 11: they're all still human at the end of the day.
• 26:03
Speaker 5: Yes, And and I think the other piece to that
• 26:06
Speaker 5: that's that that that that we need to consider is
• 26:10
Speaker 5: when you're on the field, you are that player. You
• 26:14
Speaker 5: are everything and anything that somebody has said great about you.
• 26:18
Speaker 3: You're trying to to to confirm that.
• 26:22
Speaker 5: But as soon as you walk off, take your helmet off,
• 26:26
Speaker 5: take your cleats off, it's work. It's it was work, right,
• 26:30
Speaker 5: I'm off work, so you know.
• 26:32
Speaker 7: At yeah, yeah, it's not that you don't love it,
• 26:35
Speaker 7: it's just that that's what you do. And then when
• 26:37
Speaker 7: you leave the it's just like when you're at work
• 26:39
Speaker 7: or doing anything in life. You have different personalities and
• 26:43
Speaker 7: different faces for different audiences.
• 26:45
Speaker 5: And I think that excuse me, I'm sorry, no, I
• 26:48
Speaker 5: was gonna say I And one where I think it
• 26:51
Speaker 5: is hard for athletes to to figure that out is
• 26:56
Speaker 5: when they're young, Like a high school athlete that's really
• 26:59
Speaker 5: good he or she a lot of times it's all
• 27:04
Speaker 5: about me, and I think that you know, they don't
• 27:08
Speaker 5: know that yet, and at some point in time you
• 27:11
Speaker 5: have to get to and I think when you get
• 27:13
Speaker 5: into a pro locker room, you have to realize that
• 27:17
Speaker 5: every single person in that room is great and you're
• 27:22
Speaker 5: just part of the greatness that we can achieve together
• 27:27
  Speaker 5: because I can't. Yeah, it's the teamwork thing. I can't
• 27:30
Speaker 5: do this thing out here. I can cover a guy
• 27:34
Speaker 5: all day long, but they if they throw somewhere else
• 27:38
Speaker 5: and score a touchdown and we lose, what what good
• 27:42
Speaker 5: was it for me to think, Hey, at list, I
• 27:44
Speaker 5: covered my guy. You know what happened to the guy
• 27:47
Speaker 5: on the other side, you know? And I really do.
• 27:50
Speaker 5: I can appreciate, you know, that understanding and that humbleness
• 27:56
Speaker 5: that comes with that, and and.
• 27:58
Speaker 3: You can you can feel it, you could just have.
• 28:00
Speaker 3: You can't fake that, No, you.
• 28:02
Speaker 7: You can't fake being humble and human, like you said, Matt,
• 28:06
Speaker 7: I mean, it's just something that I've been pleasantly surprised
• 28:11
Speaker 7: with a lot of our guests. I'm glad we brought
• 28:13
Speaker 7: that up because it's been like, you expect something maybe
• 28:16
Speaker 7: a little more. And to Matt's point, you know, what
• 28:18
Speaker 7: you see on media is a whole different picture of
• 28:22
Speaker 7: them painted compared to win they're in person.
• 28:24
Speaker 11: Well, I think we forget to I mean, there's still
• 28:27
Speaker 11: twenty four hours in a day. There are what sixteen
• 28:30
Speaker 11: seventeen NFL football games a year. What are you doing
• 28:33
Speaker 11: for the rest of that three hundred and sixty five?
• 28:35
Speaker 11: I mean, even when you were in the league, Carl,
• 28:37
Speaker 11: you probably still went home and had to occasionally do
• 28:39
Speaker 11: the dishes or laundry.
• 28:43
Speaker 6: I'm sure Donna never asked him to do that.
• 28:46
Speaker 3: I watched clothes this morning. I mean a show.
• 28:51
Speaker 11: It's a silly thing to think about, But I mean
• 28:53
Speaker 11: it's regardless of what you do day in and day out.
• 28:57
Speaker 11: As as you said as your job, We're all still
• 29:01
Speaker 11: doing a lot of the same day to day stuff,
• 29:03
Speaker 11: regardless of whether you're going to an NFL stadium to
• 29:06
Speaker 11: clock in for the day, or you're here recording at
• 29:08
Speaker 11: the radio station or working down the street at.
• 29:10
  Speaker 4: The coffee shop.
• 29:11
  Speaker 3: Yeah, you're doing.
• 29:12
Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a perfect way to say it.
• 29:13
Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, let's take another quick break and we
• 29:16

Speaker 4: begin on Let's talk.
• 30:22
Speaker 3: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are back on the
• 30:25
  Speaker 3: break and.
• 30:27
Speaker 5: Miss Odie is going to going to introduce everyone to
• 30:31
  Speaker 5: our next.
• 30:32
Speaker 6: Game, our caravan of TBT coaches. Tonight.
• 30:35
Speaker 7: I love it so Our next coach is currently the
• 30:38
Speaker 7: head coach for the TBT team coming to the Coliseum
• 30:42
Speaker 7: on Friday, Best Virginia. I'll give you a little history
• 30:45
Speaker 7: for this for this prestigious coach. He's a former mountaineer
• 30:49
Speaker 7: who played at West Virginia between the years of nineteen
• 30:52
Speaker 7: ninety four nineteen ninety eight. He averaged ten point six
• 30:55
Speaker 7: points per game is senior season, and he is currently
• 30:59
Speaker 7: a head coach of the Notre Dame High school basketball program.
• 31:04
Speaker 7: And he returns to lead the Best Virginia team after
• 31:07
Speaker 7: a break from it. He was their initial coach in
• 31:10
Speaker 7: twenty nineteen. So welcome Jared West to the podcast.
• 31:15
Speaker 9: Oh, thank you God, thank you, Thank you guys for
• 31:17
  Speaker 9: having me.
• 31:17
Speaker 3: Thank you So, Jared, this is Caraley. How are you man.
• 31:21
Speaker 9: I'm doing great, doing great. I've heard great things about you.
• 31:24
  Speaker 3: They're not true.
• 31:26
Speaker 6: Please don't tell him that, Jared. Come on.
• 31:31
Speaker 5: So I've got one question, because I would always get questions,
• 31:35
Speaker 5: and I've tried, I've taken my turn trying to be
• 31:39
Speaker 5: a coach and all that kind of stuff. What got
• 31:42
Speaker 5: you into the coaching realm? What is it and what
• 31:48
Speaker 5: makes you love it?
• 31:51
Speaker 9: So I never expected to be a coach. When I
• 31:54
Speaker 9: married my wife, she's from Clarksburg, West Virginia, and I
• 31:57
Speaker 9: started doing basketball training, which I have. I love to
• 31:59
Speaker 9: do because I love kids and just having to train
• 32:02
Speaker 9: the principal of Notre Dame High School and she said,
• 32:05
Speaker 9: you know what, you would be a great coach, and
• 32:07
Speaker 9: I said, well, I'm kind of old school. I'm big
• 32:13
Speaker 9: on accountability and discipline and struct She did that type
• 32:16
Speaker 9: of thing and so I tried it, and to be
• 32:19
Speaker 9: honest with you, I immediately fell in love with it.
• 32:22
Speaker 9: It's the closest thing to playing. It is very very hard,
• 32:26
Speaker 9: especially especially for someone who played at a high level,
• 32:32
Speaker 9: because you see things that you know should happen, but
• 32:36
Speaker 9: they might not in that way. So that's about That
• 32:40
Speaker 9: was my hardest adjustment. But fell in love with it.
• 32:43
Speaker 9: To be able to mentor kids, uh to now I've
• 32:49
Speaker 9: been coaching enough that I'm I'm training kids that I've coached,
• 32:51
Speaker 9: Their kids are coming through. I've been invited to weddings.
• 32:55
Speaker 9: It is the best thing in the world because you
• 32:57
Speaker 9: never know how much impact you have on on on kids.
• 33:02
Speaker 9: And my mom, when I told her what I was doing,
• 33:04
Speaker 9: she said, that's your ministry, that's uh. That's your way
• 33:07
Speaker 9: that you can uh mentor and and speak God into
• 33:10
Speaker 9: people's lives. And uh so I've taken it and run
• 33:15
Speaker 9: with it. And I've been blessed to have administration who
• 33:17
Speaker 9: have allowed me to be me, which which is very
• 33:22
Speaker 9: very important. If you're a situation where you can't be yourself,
• 33:25
Speaker 9: it's miserable when you have people that back you, that
• 33:27
Speaker 9: allow you to be yourself. So it's been great for me.
• 33:32
  Speaker 6: That's good, that's that's amazing.
• 33:34
Speaker 7: So so Jared, let's go back in the day for
• 33:36
Speaker 7: a minute before we fast forward to the TV T
• 33:38
Speaker 7: Let's just go back to your playing days in Morgantown.
• 33:41
Speaker 7: So you were fortunate enough to be a player under
• 33:45
Speaker 7: the realm of Gail Catlet.
• 33:48
Speaker 6: What was it like playing for Gail back back then?
• 33:51
Speaker 9: Oh, man kitty cat we called him that, it was.
• 33:54
Speaker 9: He was an interesting guy. He was he was if
• 33:57
Speaker 9: he was a great exces and old guy. If you
• 34:00
Speaker 9: did well, he if we call the time out and
• 34:02
Speaker 9: he designed to play, If we did it, we normally
• 34:04
Speaker 9: got a pretty good shot of score. He was a
• 34:07
Speaker 9: great He was a great guy. Miss Stannis, who recently passed,
• 34:11
Speaker 9: was his lovely wife. She was the nicest woman in
• 34:13
Speaker 9: the world. She would bring us cookies for every road trip.
• 34:16
Speaker 9: I mean, she was the best. But Coach Kelly was great,
• 34:20
Speaker 9: and I tell that. I'll tell all the young guys
• 34:22
Speaker 9: like John and Dayshawn, when when we first started with
• 34:25
Speaker 9: the TBT and they got this new practice facility. I
• 34:28
Speaker 9: tell a story that when back in the day before
• 34:31
Speaker 9: n I L and all that stuff, me and Brent
• 34:33
Speaker 9: Solheim and Damian Os we come to the coliseum and
• 34:36
Speaker 9: we beg and plead and knock on the door. Nobody
• 34:38
Speaker 9: would let us in. Got practice facilities, and they got
• 34:43
Speaker 9: managers that come rebound. I mean, you talk about the
• 34:45
Speaker 9: title kids, But anyway, it was. It was great. My
• 34:49
Speaker 9: junior year, we should have gone to the NCAA Tournament,
• 34:54
Speaker 9: and we ended up goingting to the n I t
• 34:55
Speaker 9: which was a great experience, but it kind of set
• 34:57
Speaker 9: our senior class up for a big time run we
• 35:02
Speaker 9: had sixteen years. We went to the Sweet sixteen. I
• 35:05
Speaker 9: was blessed to make a shot that people still talking
• 35:09
Speaker 9: about the day and I tell.
• 35:10
Speaker 6: People, pay no, no, you go ahead, sir, you go ahead.
• 35:18
  Speaker 6: I'm teasing.
• 35:19
Speaker 9: I get rolling. Great. It was great playing on the
• 35:23
Speaker 9: coach calling because The most important thing that I like
• 35:26
Speaker 9: is I had a special special relationship with the fans.
• 35:30
Speaker 9: People don't yes you did them. They don't understand the
• 35:36
Speaker 9: the great fans and the great people of West Virginia.
• 35:38
Speaker 9: If you would have told me I was going to
• 35:40
Speaker 9: move from Mississippi and never go home, you I ought
• 35:43
Speaker 9: to tell you you were crazy because I'd never heard
• 35:46
Speaker 9: of West Virginia really before I got here. I heard
• 35:49
Speaker 9: of as Harris because they just played yes the boat.
• 35:53
Speaker 9: So for me to be here twenty five plus years,
• 35:57
Speaker 9: it's a lot due to coach calling and him bringing
• 36:00
Speaker 9: me in and my great senior class I was with.
• 36:04
Speaker 5: When you when you when you think back on that
• 36:08
Speaker 5: during that time, where where did you did you? Could
• 36:12
Speaker 5: you foresee yourself being who you are now.
• 36:17
Speaker 3: Because of your coach?
• 36:19
Speaker 5: Because I know when when when Sunny Randall came into
• 36:23
Speaker 5: Marshall University and was doing all this yelling and screaming, man,
• 36:28
Speaker 5: I was like, who is this dude? I like, man,
• 36:32
Speaker 5: this dude ain't gonna have no kind of impact on me.
• 36:36
Speaker 5: But to this day, man, I feel like he is
• 36:39
Speaker 5: the catalyst of who I am.
• 36:42
Speaker 9: That's a grass One of the best questions anybody's ever
• 36:45
Speaker 9: asked me, And I'm gonna give you the PG version
• 36:48
Speaker 9: because I have an X rated version, which you probably
• 36:52
Speaker 9: have also. Yes, but ask your question. If you would
• 36:55
Speaker 9: have told me my freshman year how things it up,
• 37:00
Speaker 9: I would I would have thought you were crazy. It was.
• 37:05
Speaker 9: It was not an easy road for me. Yeah, it
• 37:11
Speaker 9: was not an easy road. But yes, I give it
• 37:16
Speaker 9: all the good because it was Adversity in life is
• 37:21
Speaker 9: something that until you face it, you don't know how
• 37:23
Speaker 9: to deal with it. And I was a big fish
• 37:26
Speaker 9: coming out of high school and when I got here,
• 37:30
Speaker 9: it was rough, and it took me a year or
• 37:32
Speaker 9: so to deal with, like to kind of handle the adversity.
• 37:35
Speaker 9: And once I matured, it was the best thing in
• 37:38
Speaker 9: the world for me because it made me a better husband,
• 37:41
Speaker 9: a better father. It taught me that life wasn't easy,
• 37:44
Speaker 9: and it actually prepared me for my senior year and
• 37:48
Speaker 9: for that moment because as you know, as a as
• 37:51
Speaker 9: a college player, I mean, game day of sweet everything
• 37:55
Speaker 9: else is rough. It's not what. It's not as fun
• 37:59
Speaker 9: and and easy everybody might think it is. So I
• 38:04
Speaker 9: had to learn tough, tough skin, and I was blessed
• 38:09
Speaker 9: to have a good group of guys around me my
• 38:11
Speaker 9: senior year and we went to the Sweet sixteen and
• 38:14
Speaker 9: you know, me and Coach Contay's relationship was was very
• 38:17
  Speaker 9: interesting up and down. But I can't I can't stress
• 38:21
Speaker 9: enough how it molded me as a man, how the
• 38:29
Speaker 9: experiences that that I that I went through with him.
• 38:31
Speaker 9: Once again, everything wasn't good. It was easy, but it
• 38:36
Speaker 9: made me understand and like you know, life isn't always fair.
• 38:39
Speaker 9: You got to continue to work and be diligent in
• 38:42
Speaker 9: your process. So but yeah, I would have never thought
• 38:45
Speaker 9: my freshman and sophomore year that it would end up
• 38:47
Speaker 9: the ways it did.
• 38:49
Speaker 3: I'm gonna promise, I'm gonna give you a chance to
• 38:53
Speaker 3: get in. I'm telling you.
• 38:56
Speaker 5: But but to your point, I have I have the
• 39:00
Speaker 5: similar story. Like when I go to Minnesota the second year,
• 39:06
Speaker 5: there's a coach they bring in, this new coach, Less Steckel,
• 39:09
Speaker 5: and he's talking about he's going to be doing all
• 39:11
Speaker 5: this kind of stuff, We're going to be working hard.
• 39:14
Speaker 5: You need to come up to Minnesota because if you don't,
• 39:17
Speaker 5: you're not going to be able to make it through
• 39:18
Speaker 5: the running all the running tests and all this kind
• 39:21
Speaker 5: of stuff. And I'm like thinking to myself, Man, I
• 39:24
Speaker 5: was with Sonny Randall and what I do know is
• 39:28
Speaker 5: I know how to train. And I can't imagine any
• 39:31
Speaker 5: of these dudes. I don't care what school you played for.
• 39:35
Speaker 5: There's no way that you had to run like I
• 39:38
Speaker 5: had to run at Marshall University and you. And I
• 39:44
Speaker 5: told him, I said, look, I'm not coming. I'll come
• 39:48
Speaker 5: with camp because you're not paying this. You know, you're
• 39:50
Speaker 5: not paying us to come, You're not putting this up.
• 39:52
Speaker 5: I can't do that, so I'll come with the season,
• 39:55
Speaker 5: but trust me, I'll be ready. And I got there
• 39:58
Speaker 5: and it it was a shame because I felt like
• 40:02
Speaker 5: this was I was.
• 40:03
Speaker 3: It was harder for me in colleagues than this was right,
• 40:06
  Speaker 3: you know, right.
• 40:07
Speaker 5: But I only say that because there are these coaches
• 40:10
Speaker 5: who you think you could you you want to hate
• 40:13
Speaker 5: them because you don't like the yelling and the screaming
• 40:17
Speaker 5: and all of that, but you have no idea of
• 40:20
Speaker 5: where and when that's going to impact you and save
• 40:24
Speaker 5: you in the future.
• 40:26
  Speaker 9: Right, And that's and you're you're you're exactly right. You're
• 40:29
Speaker 9: you're you're spot on on that, You're spot on it.
• 40:32
Speaker 9: It's amazing the life lessons you learn through the adversity
• 40:34
Speaker 9: and emoes you. And I hear myself saying a lot
• 40:38
Speaker 9: of things to my kids, and I look at it
• 40:42
Speaker 9: and I smile because I'm like, when you're the one
• 40:45
Speaker 9: here and that you're like, man, this guy's crazy olds you,
• 40:49
Speaker 9: It mows you. It does it does, Yes, it does.
• 40:53
Speaker 7: So So, Jared, I'm going to go back to that
• 40:56
Speaker 7: buzzer beating basket against the Cincinnati bear cat Cats in
• 41:00
Speaker 7: the second round of the NCAA Tournament in nineteen ninety eight.
• 41:04
Speaker 7: It propelled your team into the sweet sixteen. Walk us
• 41:08
Speaker 7: through that play. What was going through your head? There's
• 41:11
Speaker 7: that last second shot.
• 41:14
Speaker 3: Did you know you were going to take the shot?
• 41:15
Speaker 3: Did you know you were going to go?
• 41:16
Speaker 9: Oh yeah, yeah, okay, okay, Yeah.
• 41:20
Speaker 3: I was hat Oh yeah, okay. I didn't want to
• 41:24
  Speaker 3: kill you.
• 41:25
Speaker 9: No, No, I got big enough shoulders to win it,
• 41:28
Speaker 9: to live and die with the make or miss. That's
• 41:30
Speaker 9: how I was raised as a kid. So, to be
• 41:34
Speaker 9: honest with you, what I was thinking about is my
• 41:37
Speaker 9: sophomore year we played Georgetown. We were up eighteen and
• 41:41
Speaker 9: ended up losing the first Big East game. I made
• 41:43
Speaker 9: a big turnover late they end up winning the game.
• 41:46
Speaker 9: My freshman year, the crowd was about to storm the floor.
• 41:49
Speaker 9: Were playing you mass They had Marcus Camby and Lou
• 41:53
Speaker 9: Rowe and we wrote fifteen and national TV game. They
• 41:56
Speaker 9: were number one team in the country and we end
• 41:58
Speaker 9: up losing that game. Uh, helical helicopter. But he made
• 42:02
Speaker 9: he made back to back three and I'm as soon
• 42:05
Speaker 9: as that second three went in, I'm thinking those two
• 42:08
Speaker 9: guys justice. This is a true story. Those two games
• 42:11
Speaker 9: flashed through my head as I'm getting the ball from
• 42:14
Speaker 9: Brian from from Brian Loewill, because I'm thinking this is
• 42:17
Speaker 9: the last game I might play. And so when I
• 42:19
Speaker 9: got the ball, you know, uh, one of our transition
• 42:24
Speaker 9: players that we that we that we ran a lot
• 42:25
Speaker 9: of simple high screens. Uh. I give the credit a
• 42:29
Speaker 9: big b because he he switched the screen at at
• 42:32
Speaker 9: the last minute. And when I came off the screen,
• 42:35
Speaker 9: I actually thought I was going to have a clean
• 42:36
Speaker 9: look at it, and uh, because I was reading his man.
• 42:40
Speaker 9: But Ruben Patterson's great friend of mine who played in
• 42:43
Speaker 9: Bit for lost that Ruben saw the screen and he
• 42:45
Speaker 9: came from basically the opposite wing, and when I jumped,
• 42:49
Speaker 9: I didn't know he shipped it until later. But when
• 42:53
Speaker 9: it was as soon as I jumped, I saw him jump,
• 42:55
Speaker 9: and so I just reached up and shot the ball
• 42:57
Speaker 9: as high as I could. And when I really he said,
• 43:00
Speaker 9: I saw was online and I knew it had a chance.
• 43:02
Speaker 9: And like I said, that day, you know, God God
• 43:06
  Speaker 9: did the rest.
• 43:07
Speaker 6: There were many couches burned that day, you know.
• 43:10
  Speaker 7: That, right.
• 43:12
Speaker 9: Listen, if I had a dollar for every time from
• 43:14
Speaker 9: where they were, I'll be.
• 43:16
Speaker 3: Sill through it for sure, for sure.
• 43:19
Speaker 9: And a great story to go along with this. So
• 43:22
Speaker 9: my brother, my older brother, got married that day and
• 43:25
Speaker 9: I was supposed to be his best man. And obviously
• 43:27
Speaker 9: he wasn't expected we was gonna be in the n
• 43:29
Speaker 9: c A tournament. So they were in the church and
• 43:32
Speaker 9: they were delaying the service, and then back in the
• 43:35
Speaker 9: day they didn't you know. He was looking at one
• 43:37
Speaker 9: of those little small you know, eight by eight. Yeah,
• 43:40
Speaker 9: And when I went up to shoot the shot, it
• 43:43
Speaker 9: feez out, And when it came back, they said they
• 43:48
Speaker 9: saw Dwayne Lewis carrying me off the floor. I thought
• 43:51
Speaker 9: that was a great story.
• 43:53
Speaker 6: It was a great story.
• 43:55
Speaker 9: It was a it was a great story from great
• 43:56
Speaker 9: great day for the for the West House.
• 43:58
Speaker 6: It was so great. I remember the play. It was awesome.
• 44:00
Speaker 7: But let's fast forward to the TVT since that's that's
• 44:03
Speaker 7: you know, what we're what we're here to talk about.
• 44:05
Speaker 7: But you know, taking into account first of all, if
• 44:09
Speaker 7: you are audience that's not familiar with the TVT, could
• 44:12
Speaker 7: you kind of give us a one on one, you know,
• 44:15
Speaker 7: just a real basic definition of how the elm ending
• 44:19
Speaker 7: works in the TBT.
• 44:21
Speaker 9: Yes, I think it's brilliant and and cargn t talk
• 44:26
Speaker 9: to a too. Uh in any sport that in any
• 44:30
Speaker 9: sport there's a time and so sometimes you can just
• 44:34
Speaker 9: milk the clock and it's played the you know, you
• 44:36
Speaker 9: can barely just you can let the clock run out
• 44:38
Speaker 9: and sometimes you can sneak a win. The elam inning
• 44:41
Speaker 9: is beautiful because you know they stopped the clock and
• 44:44
Speaker 9: it's no time. You have to actually go score points,
• 44:46
Speaker 9: you have to create offense. So it's actually I would
• 44:50
Speaker 9: love for the NBA Top It would be interesting if
• 44:53
Speaker 9: they would ever try to or college because you know,
• 44:56
Speaker 9: and you know, you get in a situation where you
• 44:58
Speaker 9: just milk the clock and run for five seconds off
• 45:00
Speaker 9: the shot clock of thirty seconds and you just kind
• 45:02
Speaker 9: of stall the game out, whereas in the elam ending
• 45:05
Speaker 9: you have to continue to play basketball, you had to
• 45:07
Speaker 9: continue to score, and it kind of just it makes
• 45:10
Speaker 9: it another game in itself. I love it, and it
• 45:15
Speaker 9: creates so much drama and because like I said, you
• 45:19
Speaker 9: just can't milk the clock. You have to go score.
• 45:21
Speaker 9: You got to go make some baskets. You gotta and
• 45:23
Speaker 9: it actually it makes you become a better coach because
• 45:26
Speaker 9: you have to what's the time.
• 45:27
Speaker 6: Frame on that chaired?
• 45:29
Speaker 7: I don't mean to interrupt, but what's the timeframe? Is
• 45:31
Speaker 7: that the last how many minutes of the game?
• 45:33
Speaker 9: But does that take the last four minutes of the game? Yeah,
• 45:38
Speaker 9: they stop it, and then I think it's either is
• 45:40
Speaker 9: it great seven? I think that it's seven points or
• 45:43
Speaker 9: nine points from wherever the leading they had nine points
• 45:46
Speaker 9: to wherever who's leading?
• 45:48
  Speaker 3: Yes?
• 45:49
Speaker 9: Right, yes, yes, so yes so Greg he said, if
• 45:52
Speaker 9: you're sixty four fifty eight, the winning score will be
• 45:55
Speaker 9: seventy three. So then it puts a lot of yeah,
• 45:59
Speaker 9: a lot of strategies of all, but it makes you
• 46:02
Speaker 9: have to continue to play. So I enjoy, I enjoy.
• 46:06
Speaker 5: All Right, I'm going to ask just I think This
• 46:09
Speaker 5: will probably maybe be our last question. But one of
• 46:12
Speaker 5: the one of the things that I find interesting in
• 46:16
Speaker 5: sports now when I when I when I look at
• 46:19
Speaker 5: it is it's it seems different to me. It's like,
• 46:23
Speaker 5: I don't know if you have you know, and I
• 46:26
Speaker 5: think there you know, there are coaches who coach team
• 46:28
  Speaker 5: work and.
• 46:29
Speaker 3: They can maybe find it there.
• 46:31
Speaker 5: But typically for me when I'm when I look around
• 46:35
Speaker 5: at sports, there's there seems to be this individualized focus
• 46:39
Speaker 5: of me. You know, I'm good. I want to go
• 46:43
Speaker 5: to college. I want to go to the pros. I
• 46:44
Speaker 5: want to go to high school. I want to be
• 46:46
Speaker 5: the start the school. Tell me what what you what
• 46:50
Speaker 5: you see? And and how do we? How do we?
• 46:53
Speaker 3: Is there a way to fix it?
• 46:57
Speaker 9: Question? And I've become I never really consider myself an
• 47:02
Speaker 9: old school type guy, but the older I get, I
• 47:06
Speaker 9: feel like I'm looking. It is hard for me nowadays
• 47:10
Speaker 9: to even watch sports because it's it's the level was different.
• 47:15
Speaker 9: But I was I was raised you work hard to
• 47:18
Speaker 9: get what you get. The entitlement is just it wears
• 47:22
Speaker 9: me out. It's different. To answer your question, I don't
• 47:27
Speaker 9: know if we can backtrack it. To be honest with you,
• 47:29
Speaker 9: because with nil they opened up the wild wild West,
• 47:32
  Speaker 9: and I mean, I just don't know. If I don't know,
• 47:34
Speaker 9: if you can the NCAA has I don't want to.
• 47:38
Speaker 9: They've done a bad job, but they've done that. And
• 47:41
Speaker 9: this this is coming from a former player who you know,
• 47:45
Speaker 9: trust me, I would have loved to have a little money.
• 47:48
Speaker 9: But I mean there has to be a cap. There
• 47:51
Speaker 9: has to be some type of limitations. I mean, just
• 47:55
Speaker 9: from a coaching STANDFO, you can't coach some of these
• 47:57
Speaker 9: guys because some of these guys are making more money.
• 47:59
  Speaker 9: Like it's it's just it's just different. It's different. And
• 48:03
Speaker 9: if you if you if you start a freshman, guess
• 48:06
Speaker 9: what he might transfer. If you tell a freshman you
• 48:09
Speaker 9: you sit behind an experience, y'all, he might transfer. What
• 48:12
Speaker 9: do you do than if you don't? Thank if you do,
• 48:15
Speaker 9: it's just a different day. And that's why you see
• 48:19
Speaker 9: a lot of older coaches getting out because it goes
• 48:23
Speaker 9: probably against everything in their DNA of how things are
• 48:28
  Speaker 9: going now. So yeah, that's that's it's gonna take a
• 48:32
Speaker 9: special group of people that can fix it or rectify
• 48:36
  Speaker 9: because I don't know, if I don't think it will
• 48:40
Speaker 9: ever get better, to be honest with you, I.
• 48:41
Speaker 5: Don't know how it can for the simple fact that
• 48:44
Speaker 5: you know, you've got You've got guys playing college ball
• 48:47
Speaker 5: that are making more money than some of the guys
• 48:49
Speaker 5: who play professional ball. So I don't even have to
• 48:52
Speaker 5: have a dream to play professional I'm good once I
• 48:56
Speaker 5: come out of college.
• 48:57
Speaker 9: So why would you leave? Like hundred he was, he
• 49:00
Speaker 9: played ten years in college? Why would he leave? Yeah,
• 49:03
Speaker 9: you know, I I just thought, I'm being like, uh,
• 49:08
Speaker 9: you know, a Mondo Bay and I just saw a
• 49:11
Speaker 9: kid and sign in Texas Tech three year, five point
• 49:15
Speaker 9: one million outside linebacker, and I'm thinking, I mean, you know,
• 49:20
Speaker 9: that's to your point, he's making more. He's making more
• 49:24
Speaker 9: than some undrafted free agents have signed two or three
• 49:27
Speaker 9: years in the NFL. Like it's it's yeah. And And
• 49:31
Speaker 9: the thing that it really frustrates me is it affects
• 49:33
Speaker 9: the highspool kids trying to come out who uh it
• 49:37
Speaker 9: really well, it hit close to home with me when
• 49:40
Speaker 9: COVID hit so little Jared was a he was able
• 49:44
Speaker 9: to get an extra year. He went to Louisville. My
• 49:46
Speaker 9: son Jayden, So would you rather bring in Jaden who's
• 49:49
Speaker 9: a senior in high school or Jared who's the fiftieth singers.
• 49:52
Speaker 9: So it affected it affected so many high school kids.
• 49:56
Speaker 9: And it's you know, it's it's just you know, and
• 49:59
Speaker 9: now they're changed situate. Juco kids might not lose a year,
• 50:02
Speaker 9: which I mean, I love, but I mean, what do
• 50:04
Speaker 9: you what are we doing? You got kids gonna be
• 50:05
Speaker 9: twenty six, twenty seven years old still then and guess
• 50:08
Speaker 9: what why what? While what I leave if I'm making
• 50:11
Speaker 9: some money too, So I just don't know what we're thinking.
• 50:14
  Speaker 9: I don't I don't understand the adults in the room
• 50:19
Speaker 9: that's making those sustains. Right, It's like, you know, they're
• 50:23
Speaker 9: what's the what's the worst thing we can do for
• 50:25
Speaker 9: college sports? And that's what they're doing. And once again,
• 50:28
Speaker 9: I played college sports and wish I had a little money,
• 50:31
Speaker 9: But once again, you don't. I mean, you know, these guys,
• 50:34
Speaker 9: it's crazy because this is.
• 50:36
Speaker 3: Not a little bit of money. This is this is
• 50:38
  Speaker 3: life changing money.
• 50:39
Speaker 9: Crazy money. Yeah, and I'm gonna go a step bigger,
• 50:43
Speaker 9: life changing money. And I'm okay. I can see the
• 50:47
Speaker 9: guys who are all league I'm talking about and I
• 50:49
Speaker 9: hate to use the word bumps, but like I'm talking
• 50:52
  Speaker 9: about average guys.
• 50:53
  Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, so.
• 50:55
Speaker 9: I mean I look you look at it. I'm like,
• 50:57
Speaker 9: this guy's making what I'm thinking, this guy average four
• 51:00
Speaker 9: points last year. This guy had fifteen catches last year.
• 51:03
Speaker 8: Like what are we talk?
• 51:05
Speaker 9: Like, what are we doing? It's bastling.
• 51:08
Speaker 5: It's really pay off of potential. It's it's payoff for potential.
• 51:11
Speaker 9: Really, yes, and Michael George said it a long time.
• 51:14
Speaker 9: You know these you're giving these guys stuff that they
• 51:18
Speaker 9: haven't earned it, you know they I mean like the
• 51:20
Speaker 9: kid for Tennessee, I think he's a pretty good quarterback. Okay,
• 51:24
Speaker 9: we I mean he's young, but like he's turning down
• 51:28
Speaker 9: you know, like, so what are we doing? He's turned
• 51:30
Speaker 9: down two or three million because he's gonna get four millions,
• 51:34
Speaker 9: Like what are we doing? Like you know what enough
• 51:36
Speaker 9: is enough? Like put a put a cap on it
• 51:39
Speaker 9: so that these coaches can actually coach, just don't hold accountable.
• 51:42
Speaker 9: Like right, it's just the while you it's the wild
• 51:46
Speaker 9: wild West, and it's sad because yes it was slightly broken,
• 51:50
Speaker 9: but it wasn't as broke as we made it, true.
• 51:53
  Speaker 3: Right, coach.
• 51:54
Speaker 11: This is producer Matt thinking about kind of this nil
• 51:58
Speaker 11: stuff and sort of going back to the team b T.
• 52:00
Speaker 11: Do you do you think that something like the TVT
• 52:03
Speaker 11: Tournament do you think that is kind of a sort
• 52:07
Speaker 11: of a testament to getting back to the roots of
• 52:11
Speaker 11: sports and sort of why people play the game?
• 52:16
Speaker 9: Right? I love it and that that's a great question.
• 52:18
Speaker 9: And I think the tv T does a great job
• 52:20
Speaker 9: of Listen, we're going to the park, you go play,
• 52:23
Speaker 9: You bring your crew. I bring my crew and we went.
• 52:25
Speaker 9: You know that that's that's the type of mentality that
• 52:28
Speaker 9: it brings. Uh. And you win, you advance, you lose,
• 52:32
Speaker 9: you go home, and if you win six, you win
• 52:34
Speaker 9: a prize. You know. So I love it because it
• 52:39
Speaker 9: makes it It makes it like back to childhood, you know,
• 52:41
Speaker 9: like we go, we go hoop and Jared West likes
• 52:45
Speaker 9: to be shooting. So yeah, I love the concept of it.
• 52:49
Speaker 5: All Right, all right, well man, we'll let you get
• 52:52
Speaker 5: We know you're busy. We'll let you get back to
• 52:54
Speaker 5: what you're doing. And we appreciate you giving us your time.
• 52:58
Speaker 6: Thanks Jared so much, appreciate it. Good luck, all right.
• 53:03
Speaker 5: Bye bye, all right, ladies and gentlemen. Oh Lisa, yes
• 53:09
Speaker 5: that was good, Okay.
• 53:11
  Speaker 6: Thank you.
• 53:13
Speaker 3: Well, I got to give you the you brought him.
• 53:15
Speaker 3: You got both of them. More is he groveling at you?
• 53:21
Speaker 6: Please write this down? Would you please note it somewhere.
• 53:24
Speaker 3: I'll tell you what. I'll even I was gonna say.
• 53:26
Speaker 6: Video recorded. I want to listen to it over and now.
• 53:28
Speaker 5: I'll broadcast it even well if you if you're got
• 53:32
Speaker 5: to do that, I need to change my mind.
• 53:33
Speaker 3: At least you got to step it up. No, that
• 53:37
  Speaker 3: was no.
• 53:38
Speaker 5: Those those two conversations were really really important. And I
• 53:42
Speaker 5: think too for parents, for kids who who who should
• 53:48
Speaker 5: listen to this and and hear some of this conversation
• 53:51
Speaker 5: because I think it's really valuable and important for them
• 53:55
Speaker 5: to understand some of the things that were said tonight.
• 53:58
Speaker 7: And once again, and I'll go back to it's a
• 54:01
Speaker 7: reoccurring theme with our guests. I mean that we all
• 54:04
Speaker 7: seem to view these these changes we're all, you know,
• 54:08
Speaker 7: and like like Jared said, I think it's because we're
• 54:10
Speaker 7: all becoming older and our values become different. Because when
• 54:13
Speaker 7: you're younger, you know things, things are, your lifestyles different,
• 54:16
Speaker 7: you're you know, your.
• 54:18
Speaker 6: Way of looking at things.
• 54:19
Speaker 7: The older you get, the more you see that you
• 54:21
Speaker 7: know what those older people in our lives, trying to
• 54:23
Speaker 7: give us, instilling us these values. They were right after all,
• 54:26
Speaker 7: even at the time we thought they weren't right.
• 54:29
Speaker 11: I think it's a testament to that. You know, you
• 54:31
Speaker 11: don't always have to have a big end game for sports.
• 54:33
Speaker 11: I mean, you may make it to college, you may
• 54:35
Speaker 11: make it to the pros, you might not. But it
• 54:37
Speaker 11: doesn't mean that you have to stop playing just because
• 54:40
Speaker 11: you didn't reach that big dream.
• 54:42
Speaker 3: You know. Sports is a lifestyle basically. Yeah, And I.
• 54:46
Speaker 5: Think too you hear from some of these guys whose
• 54:50
Speaker 5: careers were great but ended at a certain point and
• 54:54
Speaker 5: get into coaching, and what do they do. They coach
• 54:57
Speaker 5: what they were coached, you know, and and they're discipline
• 55:01
Speaker 5: and they're all of those kinds of things. They know
• 55:05
Speaker 5: that's what needs to be there in order for you
• 55:08
Speaker 5: to have any kind of measure of success, of success.
• 55:11
Speaker 6: They go back to their grassroots for sure.
• 55:13
  Speaker 3: Yes, for sure.
• 55:14
Speaker 7: And if you haven't been to the TVT, I highly
• 55:17
Speaker 7: recommend it, even if you're not a huge basketball fan.
• 55:20
Speaker 6: It is exciting, it is fun. The elam ending is amazing.
• 55:24
Speaker 7: So you know, if you're you're in the audience and
• 55:26
Speaker 7: you're kind of on the fence about it.
• 55:27
Speaker 6: Go check it out. It's really fun.
• 55:29
Speaker 5: Well, ladies and gentlemen, we'll get out of here today
• 55:32
Speaker 5: and we will be back again soon
