- 0:00Speaker 1: What's one reason why you think the big Lebowski is
- 0:02Speaker 1: held up so long? Like, and that, why that, why
- 0:04Speaker 1: that character's held up so long, like kind of stood
- 0:06Speaker 1: the test of time.
- 0:06Speaker 2: It's such a good movie, man. These guys, the Coen brothers,
- 0:10Speaker 2: they make it look effortless, but there is effort that
- 0:13Speaker 2: goes into it, but they're just so good, man. And
- 0:16Speaker 2: what they do, look at their movies, look at the
- 0:19Speaker 2: stuff that comes out of their oven, man. It's so good. And, um, God,
- 0:28Speaker 2: it's just a good movie. You know, it'll come up
- 0:30Speaker 2: on the TV and I don't watch, you know, maybe
- 0:33Speaker 2: one of my movies comes up, I'll watch a scene
- 0:35Speaker 2: or two. You know, I'll see it come up and
- 0:38Speaker 2: I'll say, well, I'll just watch till Turturro licks the ball,
- 0:42Speaker 2: you know, but I get hooked, man. It's like, you know,
- 0:45Speaker 2: eating popcorn. I can't stop. Each scene is just so good.
- 0:51Speaker 2: And you see new things about it each time. You know,
- 0:55Speaker 2: you see more richness. One of the fans came up
- 0:58Speaker 2: with me and he said, I've got a theory I
- 1:01Speaker 2: want to run by. I said, what's that? My theory
- 1:05Speaker 2: is that Donnie doesn't exist. He's only a figment of
- 1:10Speaker 2: Walter's imagination. Wow. And I ran that by. I said,
- 1:14Speaker 2: you know, you're right. The dude, well, the dude talks
- 1:17Speaker 2: to him once. And when Donnie says, your phone's ringing, dude.
- 1:21Speaker 2: And dude says, thank you, Donnie. But that could be
- 1:24Speaker 2: just a you know, bust Walter's chops. Yeah. You know,
- 1:27Speaker 2: just teasing Walter, you know. But he doesn't, you know,
- 1:32Speaker 2: Walter speaks to him all the time, but the dude
- 1:34Speaker 2: kind of ignores him. Yeah. Isn't that a bizarre thing?
- 1:38Speaker 1: Yeah, to think that even that some people don't exist
- 1:41Speaker 1: and that they're just kind of characters that help you
- 1:43Speaker 1: fill in and navigate certain spaces.
- 1:44Speaker 2: And then there's one scene at the end where he
- 1:46Speaker 2: goes to the coroner and they get Johnny's ashes, and
- 1:50Speaker 2: there could be a missing scene where the dude goes
- 1:53Speaker 2: to the corner prior without Walter and says, look, my
- 1:56Speaker 2: friend is mentally challenged. Can you just put any ashes
- 2:02Speaker 2: in a thing?
- 2:03Speaker 1: Just decent ashes.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Yeah, and we'll do a thing. That's a missing scene,
- 2:08Speaker 2: but that would make that scenario that Donnie doesn't exist.
- 2:12Speaker 1: That's cool to think about.
- 2:14Speaker 2: It's weird. Donnie's line, Steve Buscemi was so great in that.
- 2:20Speaker 2: What does he say? I am the walrus. I am
- 2:23Speaker 2: the war. Shut the fuck up, Donnie.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Dude, I saw him at the Knicks game, him and
- 2:31Speaker 1: his grandkids. It was really cool, dude. His grandkid was
- 2:35Speaker 1: trying to get me to help set him up with
- 2:37Speaker 1: a chick that was eating nearby. He's like, bro, go
- 2:40Speaker 1: throw in a good word for me. I'm like, what
- 2:43Speaker 1: do you do? You can do it. But I did it.
- 2:45Speaker 1: I helped him out. And they had good stuff there.
- 2:48Speaker 1: They had some like eggplant parmesan.
- 2:52Speaker 2: I got very tight with a cat named Bernie Glassman.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Do you know that guy at all? Does that name
- 2:58Speaker 2: ring a bell?
- 2:58Speaker 1: No.
- 2:59Speaker 2: So he's a Zen master. He was. He's no longer
- 3:03Speaker 2: with us. And I was at a party. You know
- 3:06Speaker 2: who Ram Dass is? Yes. Yes. So I give him,
- 3:10Speaker 2: it was Ram Dass' birthday.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Oh, dang, what do you even get him?
- 3:13Speaker 2: And so I go, well, this is what I get him.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I say, hey, Ram, can I call you Ram? I've
- 3:18Speaker 2: always wanted to give you a little.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Head, man. I gave him my head.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And he looked at me kind of straight. And then
- 3:26Speaker 2: the guy sitting to my left was this, like, little
- 3:29Speaker 2: Jewish guy, you know. And he goes, hi, I'm Bernie Glassman.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And I go, oh, yeah. And he says, I really
- 3:35Speaker 2: dug Lebowski, man. And I say, oh, yeah. And I say, oh, yeah.
- 3:39Speaker 2: And he says, yeah, he says, I'm a Zen master.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I don't know if he actually said Zen master, but
- 3:45Speaker 2: he maybe said, I'm really into Buddhism or something. But
- 3:47Speaker 2: he turns out this guy was a heavy Zen master.
- 3:53Speaker 2: And he says, Lebowski, it's filled with Zen koans. You
- 3:58Speaker 2: know what a koan is? Like, you know, what is
- 4:00Speaker 2: the sound of one hand clapping? That's kind of a thing.
- 4:03Speaker 2: So it's like a question that you don't have a
- 4:06Speaker 2: certain answer. You just have to kind of give you a.
- 4:10Speaker 2: vibe or trigger something to you, you know.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Let's see that real quick.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, you can. Yeah, there you go.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Yeah. A Zen koan is a short paradoxical story or
- 4:19Speaker 1: dialogue used in Zen Buddhist practice. Rather than riddles to
- 4:23Speaker 1: be logically solved, they are meant to exhaust the rational mind,
- 4:26Speaker 1: allowing the practitioner to break free from the habitual binary
- 4:29Speaker 1: thinking and experience reality directly.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Some examples are the sound of one hand clapping.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. So anyway, that's a perfect, great definition. Got it.
- 4:39Speaker 2: So Bernie says, yeah, I really dug Lebowski. He says,
- 4:43Speaker 2: it's filled with modern-day koans, and I'm all about bringing
- 4:46Speaker 2: Buddhism up to speed with modern-day times. I said, what
- 4:50Speaker 2: do you mean it's filled with modern-day koans? He says, well,
- 4:53Speaker 2: look who wrote and directed it. It's the koan brothers.
- 4:59Speaker 2: And I say, what's another example?
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah, because that one's mid. That one's pretty mid.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Yeah, he says, the dude abides. That's very Buddhistic right there.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I say, give me another one. He says, well, my
- 5:09Speaker 2: favorite one is that's just like your opinion, man. And
- 5:16Speaker 2: that's my favorite one.
- 5:18Speaker 1: At least he came with three. If he'd only had one. Oh, no.
- 5:21Speaker 2: And he goes on. I said, give me another one.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Shut the fuck up, Donnie. That's another one. And he
- 5:26Speaker 2: was filled with these things. And I said, those are
- 5:29Speaker 2: pretty good. He says, yeah, let's write a book, man.
- 5:31Speaker 2: I say, what do you mean? He says, yeah, we'll
- 5:33Speaker 2: write a book about this. You into it? And I
- 5:36Speaker 2: thought about it, and I got such a hit from
- 5:39Speaker 2: this guy. You know how you get a hit kind
- 5:41Speaker 2: of immediately with people? You know, boom.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Yeah, some people are fascinating. It's like meeting a cool
- 5:46Speaker 1: pet in the street. You just boom. Yeah, you keep
- 5:48Speaker 1: petting it or whatever.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Yeah. And so we got in cahoots. We went up
- 5:51Speaker 2: to Montana for a week or two and wrote this
- 5:55Speaker 2: book called The Dude and the Zen Master. Oh, you
- 5:58Speaker 2: got it up there. There's burn.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Let's go.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Yeah, man.
- 6:04Speaker 1: And what happened to him? Huh? What happened to him?
- 6:06Speaker 1: He passed away?
- 6:07Speaker 2: He died. Yeah. I was just, you know.
- 6:09Speaker 1: He could have faked it and he could be in Barbados.
- 6:12Speaker 2: But this guy, I would advise your viewers to check
- 6:15Speaker 2: him out. You can Google the hell out of him.
- 6:19Speaker 2: He's got so many wonderful books.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Bernie Glassman?
- 6:23Speaker 2: Bernie Glassman. Well, kudos to him. The Infinite Circle, Instructions
- 6:29Speaker 2: to the Cook. He was so great. Oh, anyway, getting
- 6:33Speaker 2: back to the heads. So I had this weird idea
- 6:37Speaker 2: because I got very involved with his organization called the
- 6:40Speaker 2: Zen Peacemakers.
- 6:41Speaker 1: And were you spending a lot of time with them?
- 6:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Did you guys have a weekly or daily practice? You know,
- 6:47Speaker 1: I didn't really– Like were you becoming a Buddhist?
- 6:52Speaker 2: In my spirituality, we could talk about that. I'm interested
- 6:59Speaker 2: in all kinds of spiritual stuff since I was a kid, raised,
- 7:04Speaker 2: I guess, from a Christian point of view. But Bernie
- 7:08Speaker 2: and I, I don't know. The word guru kind of
- 7:15Speaker 2: sticks in my craw. I just saw him as a dear.
- 7:19Speaker 2: wise friend, man, that really I got so much out of. Yeah,
- 7:25Speaker 2: the sequels are interesting. I've done a couple movies that
- 7:28Speaker 2: are popping into my mind. We're talking about this. You
- 7:30Speaker 2: ever see a movie called Starman? Uh-uh. I play an alien,
- 7:36Speaker 2: you know, and Karen Allen, I fall in love with her,
- 7:39Speaker 2: and she's pregnant with my baby, right? Very much like
- 7:44Speaker 2: Maude is pregnant with.
- 7:47Speaker 2: The dude's baby, man. So that could open the little Lebowski, man. Yeah.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Do a whole thing.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Who would play it, though, if you had a little Lebowski,
- 7:57Speaker 1: you think?
- 7:57Speaker 2: Who would play the kid?
- 7:59Speaker 1: Or, yeah, who would play, like, because that's the re-dude,
- 8:01Speaker 1: you know?
- 8:02Speaker 2: How young can you play, man? How young can you be?
- 8:05Speaker 1: Me, dude?
- 8:05Speaker 2: You could do it. You could be, like, you know,
- 8:08Speaker 2: you could be all my kids. Wait a minute. How
- 8:12Speaker 2: old are you? I'm 46. Well, see, my girls are
- 8:14Speaker 2: 40 and 45. Are they married? Yeah, all married to
- 8:20Speaker 2: good guys, man. Yeah, but you could play the little Lebowski, man.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Yeah, bro.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Huh?
- 8:26Speaker 1: Yeah, dude.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Okay.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Dude, I like it. And I have to get a job, though,
- 8:32Speaker 1: don't I?
- 8:32Speaker 2: No.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Yeah, good answer, bro. That's what the dude would answer.
- 8:38Speaker 1: That's the only answer. Yeah, man.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Yeah. You're doing it now. This is what the little
- 8:44Speaker 2: Lebowski dude would be.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Yeah, he'd be podcasting probably.
- 8:48Speaker 2: He'd be podcasting, man. He'd be an influencer.
