- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Genesis 15.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: God's Agreement with Abram.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: After all these things happened, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: God said, Abram, don't be afraid.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: I will defend you and give you a great reward.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: But Abram said, Lord God, there is nothing you can give me that will make me happy because I have no son.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: My slave Eliasar from Damascus will get everything I own after I die.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Abram said, You have given me no son, so a slave born in my house will get everything I have.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Then the Lord spoke to Abram and said, That slave will not be the one to get what you have.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: You will have a son who will get everything you own.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Then God led Abram outside and said, Look at the sky, see the many stars?
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: There are so many you cannot count them.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Your family will be like that.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Abram believed the Lord, and because of this faith the Lord accepted him as one who has done what is right.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: He said to Abram, I am the Lord who led you from Ur of Babylonia.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: I did this so I could give you this land.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: You will own this land.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: But Abram said, Lord God, how can I be sure that I will get this land?
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: God said to Abram, We will make an agreement.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Bring me a three year old cow, a three year old goat, a three year old ram, a dove and a young pigeon.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Abram brought all of these to God.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Abram killed these animals and cut each of them into two pieces.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: He laid each half across from the other half.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: He did not cut the bird in two pieces.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Later large birds flew down to eat the animals, but Abram chased them away.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: The sun began to go down, and Abram got very sleepy.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: While he was asleep a very terrible darkness came over him.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Then the Lord said to Abram, You should know this, your descendants will live in a country that is not their own.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: They will be strangers there.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: The people there will make them slaves and be cruel to them for four hundred years, but then I will punish the nation that made them slaves.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Your people will leave that land and they will take many good things with them.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: You yourself will live to be very old.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: You will die in peace and will be buried with your family.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: After four generations your people will come to this land again and defeat the Amorites.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: That will happen in the future because the Amorites are not yet guilty enough to lose their land.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: After the sun went down, it got very dark.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: The dead animals were still on the ground.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Each animal cut into two pieces.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Then a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between the halves of the dead animals.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: So on that day the Lord made a promise and an agreement with Abram.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: He said I will give this land to your descendants.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: I will give them the land between the river of Egypt and the great river Euphrates.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: This is the land of the Kenites, Kenesites, Cadmonites, Hittites, Perizites, Rephites, Amorites, Canaanites, Gergeshites, and Jebusites.
